The story is just getting started.
A year-long series with a new chapter every issue. Catch up today! Thousands of people have read the first ten chapters of a year long series we are doing on the life of Ed Flowers, also known as Teddy Bear. Ed grew up in Macon, took part in his first bank robbery when he was fourteen years old, a crime for which he never went to jail for. He went on to play baseball at Dudley Hughes High, under coach Goot Stiener where his team won a State Championship in 1964. He practiced with Pete Rose. But Teddy couldn’t stay out of trouble, and ended up in Reidsville Prison right after he graduated, as fucked up as a research monkey, on morphine. Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined. We are asking that you buy a VIP Membership to 11thHouronline.com to read the rest of Teddy’s story. It’s less than the price of a digital book. $7.99. For that, you’ll get to read the rest of the story, as well as hear audio interviews with Teddy himself, with online digital video coming this fall. The money will help The 11th Hour continue to offer great content, and calendars and reviews to our readers for years to come. So purchase your membership today and continue to read Teddy Bear. Pegged as one of the original boy bands of the late 1990’s and known for their authentic vocal harmonizing, Grammy-nominated 98 Degrees were never just an ordinary pop group. Unlike most boy bands of the time, the group formed independently before later being signed to Motown Records, who released the group’s debut album 98° in 1997. In 1998, the band released their breakthrough album 98° and Rising through Universal Records. The album went 4X platinum and yielded the hit singles “Because of You,” “I Do” and “The Hardest Thing.” The group’s success continued to flourish through the late 90’s and in 2000 Mariah Carey released “Thank God I Found You” featuring 98 Degrees and Joe. Later that year, the band released their fourth studio album Revelation which produced the #2 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche).” Revelation peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart and went on to become 2X platinum. By 2002, the band had sold a staggering 10 million albums and the release of The Collection, a compilation spanning the group’s impressive five-year career, helped solidify their place as one of music’s most influential pop bands. In June of 2012, brothers Nick and Drew Lachey announced 98 Degrees’ official reunion on On Air with Ryan Seacrest. 98 Degrees is Nick Lachey, Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons.

NATIVE/NEW
Meet Daniel Eberlein Native Macon, GA Occupation Musician/Artist and Curator of Fresh Produce Records Usually a couple nights per week, you can walk into Fresh Produce Records downtown on MLK and see some of the most diverse, eclectic, innovative live music around town – could be bizarre experimental noise, could be exuberant hip hop, could be a cult singer-songwriter. The one thing that’s consistent is the energetic presence of Daniel Eberlein, who has been working with the record store booking shows and helping to curate the positive pro-art environment since it opened in 2013. He’s also a talented, busy musician, playing in several bands – Corner Coronah, Gurgle Twins, Hangmane, and countless one-off collaborations with other local artists. Daniel’s tough, sweet energy, radical and lovely openness, and eagerness to create both his own art and a space where others can showcase their art make him one of the most dynamic local dudes around. What’s your background with music? I’ve always liked music and gravitated towards it. At some point in my early teen-dom I didn’t have very many friends and was always on the internet finding new music, and that really kickstarted a lot for me. I started playing instruments. I started with drums and got forced into being in band at Howard [High School], which actually turned out to be great for me. I started to play on my own with bands after that and it’s been pretty much history since then. I play drums, guitar, and bass. Those are the ones I consider myself proficient in, but I have played some brass and other percussion instruments. Really my favorite thing is synthesizers.
11 Random Facts about Daniel: 1. I really like S&S Cafeteria because you can sit in a private room if you want 2. I love karaoke night at the Back Porch Lounge (Thursday, Friday & Sunday nights) 3. My go-to karaoke song is “Lovefool” by the Cardigans 4. I think everybody should check out OSR, which is a record label from New York that’s really happenin’ and I believe in what they’re doing 5. I’m a super astrology nerd 6. I never went to a school dance 7. I’ve never been to a church service 8. I’m allergic to pineapple
Are you self taught? Pretty much. I took guitar lessons through my school for one semester, and that was very very basic, but after that I’ve been self taught, and kind of staunchly so. At a point I wanted to stop learning music theory, so I did.
9. I’m the most ticklish person I know
How does that change the way you play? It made me feel way more free, and like there wasn’t a good or bad anymore – I was just playing, able to channel an energy more purely and not worry about how composed something is or if it makes sense, and being more open to things that maybe don’t make sense. How long have you been booking shows? At Fresh Produce, since it opened in 2013, so almost three years, but that was a continuation of other, more informal things – I’ve been booking shows for about five years with the same people, the same mentality – underground bands with a DIY motivation and the idea of being the place that isn’t a bar that hosts shows - more of an art space, a venue for more out there, experimental music. That started at the Golden Bough, and we did shows in various houses for a long time. Fresh Produce was a way to legitimize that and expand it.
I’ve definitely seen it progress up and down and meander all sorts of other directions. I would say that there were a lot more people coming to those early shows at the Golden Bough – the scene has become smaller but also more tight-knit and focused, and it has a lot to do with who has been at the helm of it all. There’s been a few different shifts in who is booking the most shows, and of course that’s going to reflect in a lot, and the type of music that’s prevalent in our scene is going to affect who comes to the shows. The music scene in the city at large has changed a lot more than my own personal one has. There’s been a huge influx of punk and metal, and a lot more bands. I do feel like our scene has become a little independent of the rest of the community – a lot of bands that play around town don’t want to play here so much, and the bands that play here don’t really play anywhere else, but I will say that I think our community has grown a lot and become a really supportive, safe space.
How do you think the independent music scene has progressed in Macon since you’ve been a part of it?
Talk some about the importance of safe space to a scene like this. It’s important to me because any creative envi-
10. I can make latte art 11. I’m never without Marlboro Reds
ronment is going to be so vulnerable to the energies and feelings that enter it, and it just won’t work if it’s not a safe space. The people making music here aren’t necessarily people of color, or gay, but if queer people can’t be here safely and comfortably, then who can? Even if they just come here and don’t even like the music – and I think that exists, people who come here because they can’t go anywhere else and feel comfortable, and that’s beyond any recognition or success with the music and art side of things. That’s the most important thing, having a place for everyone. That’s why I’ve carried this out from going to shows at the Golden Bough when I was a young kid - that place was that for me. The notion of a safe space hasn’t been apparent to me for very long, but once I figured it out, I realized that one has existed for me and that one doesn’t for a lot of people who need one, and that’s the least we can do. What do you enjoy most about booking shows? Some days I have ten emails all from bands that want to play here, and it’s awesome going online to listen to them and feeling excited about the music, like “Oh my God, this exists in the world!” We’ve had bands from South America and Korea and all over Europe, and that in itself is thrilling because it’s a chance to meet some incredible people who are succeeding at what we do, and learn from them about making art, or touring, or what it’s like where they’re from, or how all of these things affect each other, and that can help you learn your own place better. I also love having a chance to represent my home. That’s really fun, to have people come and see a different side of America. Macon is a really unique place, and a lot of people that come here from New York or wherever are like, “This is so much better than there!” We’ve had tons of people love it here. Doing this work makes me feel really great, and I constantly get to meet people who are shining examples of humans. What’s your vision for this space and this community? What would you like to see happen? Part of me says that this is it. My vision has been met and redefined and met and redefined so many times. I hope that we can become more sustainable as far as money goes. It’s a very delicate balance of what we’re comfortable doing and what needs to be done. Finding the best way to be profitable and sustainable but keep art as the focus – that’s always been THE vision. Keeping honest and pure, figuring out the best way to do things, expanding into helping as many people as possible. That was the genesis of this place, that’s why it’s called what it is. Our idea was to be a farmer’s market and a record store, and look where we are – we’re neither of those things right now. Our idea was to nurture our community mentally with music and honesty, and physically with organic food. I still consider that a personal mission, to help others the only way I know how – with art. To stay true to ourselves – that’s my vision. I’ve long ago let go of any fantasy of bigger bands, bigger crowds, more recognition, because what we have here now is already so great. 11thHourOnline.com 11

Q
Q
We’ve all been through a lot of things in our careers. And the big thing was, do we have the fortitude to say what we want to say? I had a lot of people come up to me at those early gigs and say: “Hey man, are you Chris Robinson?” “I am.” “Well, why are you setting up your own shit?” “Because nobody gives a shit about this yet.”
Hey man. Thanks so much for doing this, I know you are a busy man. One kid is at surf camp and one kid is at nature camp, so I’m actually free for a couple of hours! Awesome. Where are you calling from? I’m home. We live in Marin County, right outside San Francisco. I used to live in Santa Cruz. I love that town. I’m loving the new band. There is so much excitement about the upcoming show. When we originally posted that we were going to be interviewing you, we got so much response from fans.
hip to Otis, but those folks are out there. Starting a new band after the Black Crowes - that had to be refreshing, huh? It looks like you’re enjoying it, and I’m sure you wouldn’t be doing it if you weren’t. Tell me about that. Yeah, man. We love our band. I know everyone says that, but we really do. In 2011, we figured out after sitting in a van and playing little clubs up and down speaking of Santa Cruz, one of our first shows was there - anyway, we figured out we had something - most of all, an outlet, in a creative way, A social way. We’ve all been through a lot of things in our careers. And the big thing was, do we have the fortitude to say what we want to say? I had a lot of people come up to me at those early gigs and say:
inanimate object. Focus, and poof - it exists. A fan wanted me to ask you about the song “Trainrobbers.” He wanted to know the story behind it. The outside story is about the famous Last Train Robber who moved to South America. He was the last person to hold up a train. I liked the idea that he was an antique. There is actually a movie about him, but I had read a story about it. I just liked the idea of the character being the last of some kind of outlaw. Not everyone remembers that era when cowboys or outlaws could be heroes. The world seems a little easier to offend these days. I was thinking that the other day, but, you know, California is getting ready to vote on whether to make recre-
CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD
That’s so cool. I was just thinking that I haven’t been to Macon in forever. I don’t remember the last time I was there. A lot of people were saying that the last time you were here was with the Black Crowes around 1991. That’s right! 1991. It’s funny because I was also there when the Allman Brothers did that record An Evening With the Allman Brothers. I was there for one of those shows. I was trying to think, was that before the Black Crowes show? I think the Black Crowes played and then I came back for that. I don’t know for sure though. Of course we used to drive down from Atlanta all the time. We’d go see Mama Louise at H&H, and then go pay our respects to Duane and Berry. One time, we went out to the Big O Ranch. I think that was in 1989. Speaking of Otis, I did want to ask you about recording “Hard to Handle.” I don’t want to spend our time talking Black Crowes, I want to talk about Chris Robinson Brotherhood, but since it’s got that Macon connection, can you tell me how all that went down? Yeah, we are giant Otis fans. How can you not be? I brought two songs to that recording. One was that Sam and Dave song, “Broke Down Piece of Man” off the Soul Man record. I love that song too. But then I had “Hard to Handle.” Otis was the man. At that time in my life, I would have been terrified to take on any other Otis tunes. You know what I mean. But our producer really pushed us towards “Hard to Handle” and felt like it would work with our sound. And boy, did it work. I’m proud of that song. Maybe we turned a few people hip to Otis that didn’t already know about him. If we did that, then I did my job. Now, I can’t imagine not being
“Hey man, are you Chris Robinson?” “I am.” “Well, why are you setting up your own shit?” “Because nobody gives a shit about this yet.” And you don’t see the Black Crowes’ name on anything, and we aren’t playing the Black Crowes’ music. Why would I pretend? Why ask people to come be a part of something that they don’t know about? We wanted to start a new band. For me it was kind of cool. Why couldn’t I do something different? Not all of us have to prostrate ourselves in front of the temple of our former selves. It’s not diminishing what I’ve done, not diminishing the Black Crowes. That was a great plan. But you want to keep growing. Keep learning, keep creating art. Exactly. But here I am, I’ll be 50 years old. I got into music as a songwriter. I didn’t know I could sing; I didn’t know I could get on stage. As time went on, as my parents moved out to the suburbs, I wasn’t a good ole boy. I wasn’t going to UGA and joining a fraternity. And luckily Atlanta at that time was an oasis of weird people who didn’t fit in. There was no fucking American Idol. You were in a band, and that’s what you did. Lucky for me, we came along at a time where people went out and saw bands, and we got a record deal, and we were commercially successful. We were a cog in the machine for awhile, but then the real work started. I loved music. I loved writing. For me it represented a lot of stuff. Same thing with CRB. Working on the look, the merch, the posters, the stage setup - those are all obsessions of mine. Everything has to fit in a certain aesthetic for me, and that’s what makes it real. Breathing life into an
ational marijuana legal or not. In 2001 or so, The Black Crowes were playing a gig, and someone in the audience yelled “420, man!” I yelled back, “I dig it, man!” It’s a much kinder gentler world today when it comes to that stuff. Back then we were outlaws for doing that. Now we’re just patients. Wheel me in, Doc! What’s the first song you remember learning to sing/ play? Probably Bob Dylan, “Girl from the North Country.” We were REALLY into Bob Dylan. What about Lowell George, was he an influence? Oh yes. We talk about him all the time. I love him. He could sing, write, play. He had this funny sense of humor. We just love him. I know this is a tough question, but a friend and I just bought an FM radio station, and built a studio on the street level of our town. We’re putting a vinyl store in the studio, and playing vinyl on the radio. I know you are a vinyl junkie – what are the top three records in your collection? Nice! But there is no such thing as my top three records. Let me pick the first three records in the pile by the chair I’m sitting in right now. Parliament – The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein; The Last Poets – Chastisement; Leon Russell - Live in Japan. Love it. He Just played in Macon. So there! My three favorite records of all time! Well, thanks again, Chris. We’re looking forward to the show. Me too, man. Looking forward to coming back to Macon! 11thHourOnline.com 13
The four-day Macon Film Festival was named one of Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World by MovieMaker Magazine. Screenings will be held at four venues located within three blocks in downtown Macon: The Douglass Theatre, Theatre Macon, Macon-Bibb Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Cox Capitol Theatre. Filmmaking workshops, networking events and legendary after-parties combine to make this an event that draws audiences and artists from around the globe.
SPECIAL SCREENINGS “Special Screenings are the culmination of each day of films; a time for everyone to gather in the same theatre and watch a film selected by our Board and Programmer that we feel will speak to our audience in a unique way,” said Julie Wilkerson, festival president. All special screenings will be held at the historic Douglass Theatre located at 355 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd in downtown Macon. Festival programmer, Tabitha Walker said, “With this year’s special screenings of MY BLIND BROTHER and MORRIS FROM AMERICA our festival audience will have an opportunity to see why these two films have been such audience favorites throughout the year at festivals like Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, and more.” Thursday, July 21 PRETTY IN PINK with special guest Andrew McCarthy. The film was written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch, Pretty in Pink (1986) is about love and social cliques in American high schools starring McCarthy, Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Annie Potts and James Spader. Mr. McCarthy portrays Blane, a rich preppy high school senior who falls for Andie (Molly Ringwald) a working-class girl from the wrong side of the tracks and both encounter resistance from their perspective social circles. The special screening will follow a Q&A with Mr. McCarthy that will begin at 6:00pm.
“The festival programming committee is also excited to be showcasing not one but two of director James Ponsoldt’s films during this year’s festival. THE END OF THE TOUR and THE SPECTACULAR NOW are fantastic examples of James’ unique voice as a director,” Walker added. The Spectacular Now is a story of Sutter, a high school senior (Miles Teller), effortless charmer, and self-proclaimed “life of the party” – unexpectedly falls in love with the “nice girl” Aimee (Shailene Woodley). While Aimee dreams of the future, Sutter lives in the now. And yet somehow, they’re drawn together. What starts as an unlikely romance becomes a sharp-eyed, straight-up snapshot of the heady confusion and haunting passion of youth – one that doesn’t look for tidy truths. The Spectacular Now, filmed in Athens, Georgia, features wonderful supporting performances from Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The additional Georgia Film Spotlight feature, THE SPECTACULAR NOW, directed by James Ponsoldt, will screen on Friday, July 22 at 11:50am at The Douglass Theatre.

MORRIS FROM AMERICA won two prizes at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the Waldo Salt Screening Award and a Special Jury Award for Robinson, who has been receiving tremendous praise for his touching and nuanced performance in his first serious role. Poignant and funny in equal measure, Morris from America is a delightfully original take on growing up, following your dreams, and finding your voice.
SPOTLIGHT FILMS Saturday, July 23 MY BLIND BROTHER, with special guest Charlie Hewson, is a relationship comedy, written and directed by Sophie Goodhart, My Blind Brother recently premiered at the SXSW Film Festival. Bill (Nick Kroll) has always lived in the shadow of his brother Robbie (Adam Scott), a handsome athlete and local hero who happens to be blind. Their sibling rivalry reaches a fever pitch when both men fall for the same woman (Jenny Slate). Mr. Hewson will conduct a Q&A following the screening.
Friday, July 22 THE END OF THE TOUR, directed by James Ponsoldt. The story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking epic novel, ‘Infinite Jest.’ Before the screening, Mr. Ponsoldt will be conducting the Sundance Institute Short Film Master Class at Theatre Macon from 12p to 4pm on Friday.
quickly falls hard for his cool, rebellious, 15-year-old classmate Katrin.. Morris sets out against all odds to take the hip-hop world by storm and win the girl of his dreams.
Sunday, July 24 MORRIS FROM AMERICA, written and directed by acclaimed up-and-coming filmmaker Chad Hartigan (This is Martin Bonner), centers on Morris Gentry (Markees Christmas, in an incredible breakout performance) a 13-year-old who has just relocated with his single father, Curtis (Craig Robinson) to Heidelberg, Germany. Morris, who fancies himself the next Notorious B.I.G., is a complete fish-out-of-water—a budding hip-hop star in an EDM world. To complicate matters further, Morris

GOP Convention 2016: Viva Trump?
As I write this week’s column, I am preparing to leave for my third Republican Convention. In 2008 in Minneapolis, I was a guest of a dear friend and was able to watch our party start to slide downhill with the nomination of John McCain. Yes, I was his Campaign Manager here in Middle Georgia and we fought the good fight to try and get a good and decent man elected to the White House but we swallowed hard, pinched our nose and voted for someone who we knew couldn’t beat Barack Obama and was not as Conservative as we wanted. In 2012 in Tampa, I was elected as an Alternate Delegate At-Large at the State Convention and witnessed the coronation of Governor Mitt Romney, another candidate who we knew couldn’t beat now President Obama and was not as Conservative as we wanted either so we swallowed hard again and took another dose of moderate castor oil in hopes that maybe he could pull off a miracle. How did that work out for us? Not so good. This year, I was elected again as an Alternate Delegate At-Large at the State Convention and will be headed to Cleveland to witness the possible train wreck that we all see coming but probably cannot do anything about. The Trump Train is about to either get derailed or hit full-throttle at about 200 miles per hour. The next question after the dust clears is “what’s next?” If the train derails and we as a party have stood up and replaced him who takes his place as the nominee? If he gets the nomination and runs head-on into the Clinton Express at 200 mph, can he get enough support to beat her if he continues to campaign in the slash and burn style that General Sherman would be proud of?
I continue to have mixed emotions about Donald Trump. On one hand, if what he is telling us is true, he certainly could be the person who could give our country a long overdue enema that it is badly in need of. On the other hand, if the Convention decides to nominate someone else, will that permanently fracture our party to a point beyond repair? Where is the Great Carnac of Edgar Cayce when you need them? (Google them…) Regardless of what happens in Cleveland, one thing is certain: our party is divided. A divided party can still win a general election. In 1948, the Democrat Convention had a massive walkout as South Carolina’s Strom Thurmond led a revolt over Civil Rights and formed his own party, The Dixiecrats, who ended up winning several Southern States, yet incumbent President Harry Truman was still able to beat Republican Thomas Dewey. Twenty years later, Richard Nixon was

able to heal the party enough to not only overcome sitting Vice-President Hubert Humphrey, even though Nixon was the moderate candidate of 1968, but also by beating Alabama Governor George Wallace who swept the South and took a chunk of the Conservative vote. Ronald Reagan sewed the party back together with the selection of George H. W. Bush as his running mate in 1980 and thrashed incumbent President Jimmy Carter. The question now becomes: Can Trump be the man to heal and not divide? I saw a glimmer of hope that Trump could be that person when he made a statement about the tragedy in Dallas that occurred last week. Trump said, “We must restore law and order. We must restore the confidence of our people to be safe and secure in their homes and on the street. This morning I offer my thoughts and prayers for all of the victims’ families, and we pray for our brave police officers and first responders who risk their lives to protect us every single day. Our nation has become too divided. Too many Americans feel like they’ve lost hope. Crime is harming too many citizens. Racial tensions have gotten worse, not better. This isn’t the American Dream we all want for our children.” Then Trump did something most of us didn’t know that he was capable of: he kept his mouth shut. Kudos Mr. Trump! He finally may be starting to get it. I hope. The events in Texas, Louisiana and Minnesota should have taught all of us that all lives matter and that we all have to work together to heal our nation and stop the divisiveness that is running rampant in our communities.

In 2005, Better Than Ezra had a Top 10 Hot AC hit with "Juicy" which was not only licensed by several commercials and brands but also featured in the promotional advertisements for the popular ABC television series Desperate Housewives. CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD
The Chris Robinson Brotherhood is touring in support of its latest release, Phosphorescent Harvest. Praised by Rolling Stone as "at once quirky, trippy, soulful and downright magnetic," it's the band's third long-playing album for Silver Arrow Records. Robinson declares: "We've created a piece of rock 'n' roll here. People can look to us and rest assured the genre is alive and well. The CRB (as they are affectionately known by fans) made an immediate impact upon their boldly unconventional debut in early 2011. They would play close to 50 shows over nine weeks in California before ever leaving the Golden State. In Robinson's words: "We don't make music that can sell iPads. Our music will not sell you a Prius. I like that. Writing songs has always led me to good things in my life. The songwriting saved me through the dark times, and the songwriting makes it that much sweeter when it's good. Real success can only come in pursuit of an authentic sound. We're all very committed to this music, beyond money and egos. That's a unique place to be."

Amanda Daughtrey THE CRAZY BULL Originally hailing from Johnston County, North Carolina, Amanda has spent the past few years solidifying her status as a must-see performer in all areas of the state that built her into the woman she is today. Her roots can be seen through the lens of her family musical influence, which can be traced back to her grandmother, who led the 1st soprano section of the church choir. Eventually, once she was old enough to drive, Amanda was able to go off and sing as a part of many theatre and country variety shows in the area. Amanda has built a solid reputation of performing a vast array of current and classic country music, classic rock, and mainstream pop alongside songs of her own that she shares with those who are willing to listen. Any given night, there’s not a chance that someone walks out of the show without having a great time. Amanda’s success has been validated with opportunities to open for top country acts like Chris Young and Justin Moore. Dirty Doves BEARFOOT TAVERN The Dirty Doves are a Blues Infused Psychedelic Rock band that transports you back to that 70’s vibe - when rock and roll still rocked and embraced the blues roots from which it sprang. Praised by Rolling Stone as “at once quirky, trippy, soulful and downright magnetic,” it’s the band’s third long-playing album for Silver Arrow Records. Tickets for this show will sell out! Robinson (formerly of The Black Crowes) declares: “We’ve created a piece of rock ‘n’ roll here. People can look to us and rest assured the genre is alive and well.” In an age when so many put their beliefs in trends, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood is committed to something deeper. In Robinson’s words: “We don’t make music that can sell iPads. Our music will not sell you a Prius. I like that. Writing songs has always led me to good things in my life. The songwriting saved me through the dark times, and the songwriting makes it that much sweeter when it’s good. Real success can only come in pursuit of an authentic
