Trump Trumps Clinton

W

e’re finally done with Election 2016 and to almost everyone’s surprise the new President-elect does not wear a pantsuit. How did Donald Trump pull off the biggest political upset in modern history? Does anyone really know for sure why and how it happened and how nobody saw it coming? Here are the reasons in my opinion, anyway, in no particular order. The email scandal that continued to dog Hillary finally bit her in the ass completely when FBI director James Comey found the Weiner-grams that linked back to her and her lack of good judgment. Comey ultimately wussed out on this, but rest assured that there is something in those damned emails or he wouldn’t have put his neck on the line that close to an election. Who knows why he said there was nothing to them a few days before the election. Maybe he had a visit in a dream from Vince Foster. Hillary was just not a nice person. Let that sink in for a minute. A lot of the voters just flat do not like her and that is saying something when they would vote for someone as unlikeable as President-elect Trump over her. The average American was sick and tired of being fed the same garbage by the Clinton Juggernaut and told it was supposed to taste good. Everyone knew once the Podesta emails were released by Wikileaks that Senator Bernie Sanders was screwed out of the nomination. That was bad taste number one. Add to that the horrible taste left in our mouths after everything was revealed about the Clinton Foundation’s pay to play scam and it seemed like she had evolved into Al Capone virtually overnight. Trump, although being far from a good candidate or even a good person, at least had a vision for America. Agree with him or not, he has vowed to cut spending, kill Obamacare, stop allowing terrorists in our borders, etc….Hillary wanted to increase taxes, keep Obamacare and keep immigration as status quo…yada, yada, yada…. There is a huge myth that Donald Trump won the election. He didn’t. Hillary Clinton LOST the election. Her crowds were sleepy and tired. Trump drew thousands everywhere he went, including right here in Macon. While Clinton depended a lot on surrogates, Trump, himself, was everywhere. Sure he blew it in the debates and has now given Alec Baldwin’s career a much needed jumpstart, but the bottom line is he wanted it more than she did. As the results were in the final stages, CNN had a panel discussing the election which Van Jones was a part. Jones open hatred for Trump bled through as he basically called Trump everything under the sun. He said there was “a ‘whitelash’ against a changing country” and that it was a ‘whitelash’ against a black president in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes. “ He also stated that his Muslim friends were texting him asking if they should leave the country and also asked “you tell your kids not to be a bully, you tell your kinds don’t be a bigot… and then you have this outcome. You put your children to bed tonight and they are

afraid of breakfast. ‘How do I explain this to my children?’” Quite honestly, Jones should look in the mirror before he throws crap out there like that. That’s the type of bullshit rhetoric that inflames people during times of change. One of the problems that Jones might have with Trump isn’t Trump at all, but he’s probably still pissed at Vice-President elect Mike Pence who called Jones out when Jones was the White House Council on Environmental Quality back in 2009 for calling Republicans “assholes”. Oh yeah, it’s Jones who says that the Bush Administration allowed 9-11 to happen. Me thinks Mr. Jones to be a bigger asshole than President-elect Trump…

Yes, yes, I know that he did not win the popular vote, but if you take California out of the mix, he won a huge plurality nationally and as a native Californian I can promise you that California is far from a microcosm of the rest of the nation, however, Trump did win the majority of the Electoral College votes, making him our President. The unfortunate thing is that there are a lot of people out there like the aforementioned Mr. Jones who are afraid of what Trump could do as President and what he will do. Several major cities still have protests going on against Trump calling him all of the Clinton buzzwords such as racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic and Islamophobic. I’m sure it won’t be long before he’s hydrophobic, hylophobic (afraid of trees), turophobic (fear of cheese), pogonophobic (fear of beards) and Sanguivoriphic which of course if the fear of vampires. There is no question that President-elect Trump has brought 90% of this on himself with a lot of his ridiculous statements but the fact remains that the American people voted him in to power. Yes, yes, I know that he did not win the popular vote, but if you take California out of the mix, he won a huge plurality nationally and as a native Californian I can promise you that California is far from a microcosm of the rest of the nation, however, Trump did win the majority of the Electoral College votes, making him our President. Our Founding Fathers put the Electoral College in place for a reason and it would take a Constitutional amendment ratified by ¾ of the states to change it and it is the fairest way to elect a President so that every state has a voice. If there was no Electoral College, would any Presidential candidate ever even think of coming to Wyoming or New Hampshire? They would spend all of their resources and energy between California, New York and Texas. Further, the Electoral College was put in place to guard against tyranny and to create a firewall between the population and the selection of a President. The authors of the Constitution studied the failures of pure democracies of the

past and concluded that a republican form of government was much more likely to persevere and they have been correct for 240 years. Alexander Hamilton said it best when he said, “The mode of appointment of the Chief Magistrate of the United States is almost the only part of the system…which has escaped without severe censure…I venture somewhat further, and hesitate not to affirm that if the manner of it be not perfect, it is at least excellent.” There is no doubt in my mind that he is right. Eight years ago the United States elected a one-term Senator from Illinois whose main experience in government was community organizing. Those of us on the right gritted our teeth and saw it through but we gave President Obama a chance. To hear people like California Senator Barbara Boxer, he is the greatest President in history. Go tell that to the people of West Virginia and Kentucky who have no jobs thanks to a coal industry

that is so regulated by the current administration that it is cheaper for US Steel or a power company to buy coal from China. Go tell that to the millions of Americans who were forced to buy high priced health insurance or face penalties instead, but we had Democrat leadership like Nancy Pelosi, another Californian, saying to just pass the Affordable Care Act then read it later. Donald Trump certainly does not represent my values or my conscience if he really feels the way he has spoken but he will be our President and he may be the one person who can reverse the river of public malaise that has drown the average American in spirit and in finances. We have given President Obama a chance and voted against four more years of the same pattern when we turned down a chance to have Secretary Clinton in the White House. I hope for our country’s sake that others will give our next President the same opportunity.

randi Thomas had been a stay-at-home mom for five years when she decided it was time to make a bit of a change. Needing something with a flexible schedule and work-at-home options, she partnered with a couple of her close friends to open Ella Bleu Boutique. Ella Bleu was one of the very first Facebook boutiques, a market that has since seen tremendous growth, and their business quickly took off. Two years later, inspired and encouraged by a similar storefront in Warner Robins called The Vine, Brandi and friends decided the time was right to open up a physical location here in Macon, and Andora Boutique Market was born. Andora opened its Forsyth Road store’s doors on June 4th of this year, and customers are already loving what they have to offer. There are fourteen different vendors; most booths feature women’s clothing (plus sizes are available from some vendors) and accessories, but there’s also a tween section, some home décor, and monogramming services available. “I hand-picked each vendor based on what they sold,” says Brandi. “I have a limited amount of space here, so I had to be very selective – and I got the best!” The positive response from her customers has proved that her intuition and taste are right on the money; there’s currently a waiting list of sellers hoping to be able to get into one of the booths at Andora someday.

18 NOV 17 - DEC 1, 2016

Customers love the way Andora pays attention to every little detail needed for a great shopping experience. There’s a kids’ corner outfitted with toys and games, so little ones can enjoy themselves and stay occupied while Mom browses. The variety of vendors means that there’s constantly fresh merchandise in the store, so no two shopping trips are the same. The prices are incredibly competitive, the clothing is fashion-forward, fun, and funky, and even the lights in the dressing rooms are flattering – you can’t get much better than that! The upcoming holiday season means that shoppers are going to be out in full force looking for unique items and great bargains, and Andora will be a perfectt destination for all that and more. The unofficial kickoff to Christmas shopping is, of course, Black Friday, and Andora plans to have giveaways, sales, and door-busters on that day to help shoppers get started out right – you can visit their Facebook page for more up-to-the-minute information and details. Take advantage of chic boutique shopping this holiday season and visit Andora Boutique Marketplace for awesome customer service and amazing deals on gifts for your favorite loved ones – and while you’re at it, might as well splurge and get yourself something, too! - By Traci Burns

NATIVE/NEW HAPPENINGS, LOCALS & REGIONAL INSIGHTS

Meet Katie Collinsworth Wurstner Native Macon,GA Occupation General Manager,Robinson Home/Executive Chef, Fork & Key

KATIE WITH OWNER WILL ROBINSON

T

here are some people who are born knowing what it is they want to do in life, and they push forward, powered by that knowledge and certainty, to fulfill what they’ve always known as their destiny. There are people who don’t ever seem to be able to pick a path to follow; those people usually end up aimless and confused, unsure of how to get their proverbial ship back on course. And then there are people who dive into life and have as many experiences as they can, never sure which one will turn into something more meaningful, just sure of the fact that we’re all offered a wild array of opportunities and missing out on any of them would be silly. Usually these types end up landing somewhere they’re perfectly, purposefully suited for and creating a lucky, happy life for themselves – Katie Collingsworth Wurstner is one of those people. Katie was born and raised in Macon, and credits the city for giving her a solid background in what it means to be part of a diverse community. “Taking advantage of the public school system helped push me out of my bubble of comfort,” she says. “Learning about people who didn’t have the same childhood, economic, and family experiences is something I treasure.” As a kid, she dreamed of being a doctor when she grew up. In high school, she wanted to be a professional clarinetist and artist; she followed that dream into college, where she nearly finished an art degree. She took time to hike the Appalachian

20 NOV 17 - DEC 1, 2016

Trail. She held an eclectic string of jobs: lighting designer, server, bookseller, retail manager. She sang with some local bands; she worked in insurance for awhile, and moved on to work with local news, where the spark that ignited her current career was found. “It was during my time with local news that I discovered I could make cakes look like anything I wanted them to,” Katie says. She teamed up with a close friend who was also an excellent baker, and they enjoyed some success until the friend’s husband was transferred out of town and the team was forced to disband. Katie had enjoyed the work, though, and decided it was time for her to learn everything she could about cooking and baking – she applied and was accepted to Le Cordon Bleu’s Atlanta campus, where she earned a degree (with honors) in Baking & Pastry Arts. As an added bonus, she met her now-husband Sam in culinary school; they were married seven months after graduation. In December 2013, Katie and Sam wandered into a new gourmet kitchen store downtown – Robinson Home – during their soft opening. “I took one step in the door, looked at Sam, and said ‘We’re home,’” Katie says. “I fell in love with everything about the store right then.” After meeting Will and Carrie Robinson, the store’s owners, Sam and Katie began teaching occasional cooking classes there; realizing the asset he’d found in Katie’s retail experience, culinary degree, and charming demeanor, Will Robinson asked her to be a

permanent part of the team. She began as Social Media Manager, shifted to General Manager, and now is both GM and Executive Chef of Fork & Key, Robinson Home’s newly opened small-plate restaurant and wine bar. Fork & Key hasn’t been open long, but it’s already generating exuberant reviews, and a quick click-through on social media shows quite a few photos people have taken of the beautiful plates they’ve been served there. The dishes Katie’s been whipping up are both aesthetically appealing and droolworthy. There are small plates available for snacking with an afternoon glass of wine – the charcuterie plate is amazing, and, according to Katie, the edamame hummus with house-made crackers has become a customer favorite. They’ve just started serving lunch, too – they open at 11 am Monday through Friday – and their panini featuring Nduja (a spicy prosciutto spread) is a huge hit. Fork & Key plans to have a menu that changes with the availability of local produce; innovation and freshness are important to Katie as a chef, and patrons reap the benefits of this with unique, creative dishes made from hyper-local ingredients whenever possible. “It may be cliché to say this, but Julia Child is my biggest inspiration,” says Katie. “Not because she was an amazing cook, but because she worked so incredibly hard at becoming the best she could be. She was tireless when it came to culinary techniques, and that is a trait I’ve attempted to emulate.” Katie embodies Julia Child’s

appealing, straightforward spirit, and her hard work and dedication, like Julia’s, has carried her forward into a career that suits her beautifully. Now she has the chance to impart her wisdom to what could be a future generation of chefs: “I tell all of my staff that I’ve made so many more mistakes in a kitchen than they have. Don’t worry about the mistakes - worry about learning how to fix the mistakes.” When she’s not busy in the kitchen at Fork & Key, Katie likes to spend her down time hanging out with her husband Sam. “Sleeping, drinking wine, reading, writing, talking, and watching shows about food come in second,” she says. When asked where she’d take an out-of-town guest for a quintessentially Macon experience, her answer is detailed, thoughtful, and, like any good foodie’s should, contains all three meals plus a late night snack: “First is breakfast/brunch at H&H - it’s just so delicious. Then a quick hike through the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds helps work off the heavy breakfast and gets some fresh air circulating. Next, lunch at NuWay Weiners or the Houston Avenue Fincher’s Barbecue simply because they are Macon. An afternoon of wandering to the slides at Coleman Hill shows off some gorgeous sites and gives you some great videos and stories to share over dinner, then on to Dovetail downtown for some delicious fare. I’d also toss in a Rock Candy walking tour or a visit to the Big House and/or the Otis Redding Museum for good measure. For evening relaxation, it’s drinks on the patio at Fork & Key with a plate of macarons. That’s my Macon.”

STEVE VAI

The Guitar Gods will be shining down on the Cox Capitol Theatre and our town of Macon on Monday, November 28 when Steve Vai will bring his unique guitar style to the stage. Vai comes to our historically rich city while on his Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary World Tour, a concert experience in which he has been performing the album in its entirety to commemorate the certified Gold record’s release from September 1990. Passion and Warfare featured some of his best known tracks ‘Erotic Nightmares,’ ‘I Would Love To,’ ‘The Audience Is Listening,’ and perhaps his most popular instrumental ballad, the powerful ‘For The Love Of God.’ Passion and Warfare was commercially Vai’s most successful release, reaching as high as 18th on the Billboard 200, as well as attaining certified Silver in the UK (over 500,000 albums sold) and Gold in Canada. Vai’s extensive career has included working as Frank Zappa’s transcriptionist, and eventually joining his band, as well as appearances on Whitesnake’s Slip Of The Tongue and David Lee Roth’s Eat ‘Em And Smile and Skyscraper albums. In a 2012 Guitar World Reader Poll, Vai was named the 10th Greatest Guitarist of all time. He has won three Grammy awards for his many collaborations: two wins for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for ‘Sofa’ from Zappa’s Universe (1994) and ‘Peaches en Regalia’ from Zappa Plays Zappa (2008), and Best Pop Instrumental Album for his role as Producer/Engineer of Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather’s No Substitutions (2001). We here at The 11th Hour and 100.9 The Creek were lucky enough to catch up with Vai by phone a couple weeks ago during his stop at The Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

TOP 10 GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME! How’s the tour been going so far? Tour’s been going great, you know, touring for me is like an escape. It’s like being in La-La-Land, like a vacation land or something. We’ve been out since May, and we started in Europe, we did a nice run in Europe and now we’re doing an American run and it’s going great. The show is basically a celebration of the 25th anniversary of my record Passion and Warfare so, besides some other things, we play the entire record from beginning to end, and one of the things I’m doing on this tour that I haven’t done before is I have screens, so I have some friends come up on the screen and I jam with them through the show so its kind of fun. What’s the reaction from the fans been like on the tour? Well what’s interesting is when you find a record, the right record comes into your life at the right time, it’s like a snapshot out of your life at that time and it has a nostalgic value to it and it has an evergreen shelf life and for a lot of people, luckily for me, that record Passion and Warfare was one of those records for them so now when they come to the show and they get to see the performance of it, I guess it would be like me having an opportunity to go back and see the entire Ziggy Stardust record performed by David Bowie, you know? Tell me about your connection to this album Passion and Warfare and why you wanted to do this 25th Anniversary Tour. The record was my most successful record, and it came out, like… It was a perfect storm, it was the perfect time, the right record from me and when it came out I actually didn’t tour on it, I never toured on that record because I had toured with Dave Roth, David Lee Roth, and then I was with Whitesnake and that was a really long tour, 24 NOV 17 - DEC 1, 2016

like a thirteen-month tour. Passion and Warfare came out about the middle of that tour. By the time that tour was done, my wife and I just had a baby and I just wasn’t ready then [laughing] you know, to go back out and tour. I thought one day it would be really great, I would love to just go out and play this whole record because it is such a milestone in my catalog. And I think this is as good of a time as any because my fingers can still do it, I’ve got a great band, and it turned out great because I thought it was going to be virtually impossible to play this record because a lot of times the stuff I do is kind of dense and compositional but with today’s technology we can use backing tracks for some of that bizarre stuff and its great. The show is really fun.

When you made this album, it was a little over 26 years ago, what were some of the influences or stories behind the tracks? I had just come from being with these big rock bands, and when I was younger, you’re subjected to the music your parents are playing in the house and lucky for me they were playing everything from Engelbert Humperdinck to Tom Jones to Italian polka music. But one record that they had was West Side Story and that had a huge impact on me because it had a story to it, it had drama, it had incredible melody, you know all this really cool stuff. I was hooked on composing, I wanted to learn how to compose, so when I was younger I actually studied how to write music and I learned how to write, I had written orchestra scores in high school and many orchestra scores through the years so when it came time to mix it all together, meaning my interest in rock music and my interest in composition music, that was a burning desire when I decided to make Passion and Warfare. That was the opening of the brand of music I had in my head.

You’re coming to Macon November 28th. Macon’s a city that’s really proud of it’s place in music history. Did that have any influence on your decision to come here? I have a connection to them in that they’re part of my musical encyclopedia of records and stuff. Most musicians have some of that stuff in their blood. But, Macon I have a different relationship with. I have a lot of friends there, actually [laughing]. It wasn’t so much a musical, historical value for me to go there, it’s just a great stop when I get an opportunity because I have friends there and it’s a great music community and the fans are really supportive there. You have a new album out that you just released in June, Modern Primitive, it’s a really fun album to listen to, tell me about that one. That came out with the 25th anniversary of Passion and Warfare. The funny thing was, when I finished my first solo record in 1982 or 1983 and released it, it was a bizarre record. I was just learning how to record and produce and after I released it, I realized I loved the idea of making records so I put a band together and I started to record a whole bunch of stuff and I wrote a bunch of new music, but then I joined this band Alcatrazz and all of that music got put on the shelf. So that was the music that I eventually completed for Modern Primitive because my first solo record was flexible and the Passion and Warfare, there’s such a vast difference in those records, you’d never think the same guy made them so this Modern Primitive is almost like a missing link between those two records. It was nice to revisit the music that was burning a whole in my psyche for thirty years, it kept beckoning me to finish it so I did. It’s a very adventurous record, really kind of brave and fearless to

“When your younger, you’re subjected to the music your parents are playing in the house and lucky for me they were playing everything from Engelbert Humperdinck to Tom Jones to Italian polka. But one record that they had was West Side Story and that had a huge impact on me because it had a story to it, it had drama, it had incredible melody, you know all this really cool stuff. I was hooked on composing...”

that kind of music. But I like it, and the fans that follow what I do really seem to be responding really great to it. Are you one of those people who sort of thinks in music? Well, occasionally, if I’m writing something then I think in notes. You brought up Whitesnake and David Lee Roth earlier, can you tell me what it was like working with them? It was a great time to be a rock star in the eighties, especially with those guys. I mean, touring with David Roth in the eighties was an amazing experience because it was, on many levels, first of all, he was David Lee Roth! He was the biggest rock star on the planet at the time. Yeah, and he was a consummate entertainer and I was mentored by him, you know, on how to relate to a large group of people from the stage which is a whole different kind of an aura that you put on that was different than when I was with Frank Zappa, which then I was more focused on what my fingers were doing and not making mistakes. But with Dave Roth it was a great show, we had Billy Sheehan and Gregg Bissonette and we just, we played our butts off. And that was a time in which you could wear all kinds of crazy clothes [laughing] and the stage was like the size of a football field, you know? It was a great time. And then Whitesnake, it was sort of more of the same, bunch of great guys just out there in the eighties kicking butt in these arenas. You mentioned Frank Zappa, he was the one who gave you your first big break. Give us your best Frank Zappa story. Oh my gosh. Frank was on this television

show called The Joe Pyne Show. Joe Pyne was like a television announcer, from what I understand. Sort of a Howard Stern type, and you never want to try and put Frank on the spot because you’re going to get it. You’d better be prepared. Joe Pyne had a wooden leg, so Frank walked into the studio and sat down and the first thing the guy says is “With all that hair, that must make you a woman,” and without missing a beat Frank said “With that wooden leg, that must make you a cable.” [laughing] [Laughing] Yeah, I guess you didn’t want to mess with Frank Zappa. No no no no no. So you’ve got this new album, you’ve got this big world tour, what do you see coming next for you? What are your plans for after the tour wraps? Well I have the Vai Academy camp, January 2-6, which this year is in Carmel, California and it’s a great event where people come from all over and we spend three or four days with these great classes and jamming, I jam with everybody, and we’ve got really great instructors and also other artists. Zakk Wylde is going to be there, and you get to see and play and talk with him, Al Di Meola, one of my heroes, and Carlos Alomar. So that’s at the beginning of the year, so after that I’m probably going to be hunkering down, strapping on a hot guitar and sitting, playing forever and seeing what comes out. As usual, I love to, at the end of the project, plant a seed to completely reinvent what I’m doing so you don’t keep doing the same riffs and kinds of things and that’s one of the more exciting parts, coming up with all new stuff, new moves and shapes and stuff. It’s great.

RAISING THE BAR HAPPENINGS, LOCALS & REGIONAL INSIGHTS

Featuring

Fine wine, craft beer, locally-sourced cocktails, live music, great food, creative people and much more

Meet Your Bartender What’s your favorite drink to make? Being a bartender you get the chance to experiment with all kinds of liquors, mixers, syrups, the possibilities are endless. Last week I came up with a shot called Hummingbird Nectar and the regulars loved it. I give them the credit for giving it the name also. A little sweet but won’t leave you feeling horrible and easy to make. What drink to you like making the least and why? I have to agree with what my co worker Michael Brunner said in his interview, “something good.” It gets old as a drink to make. We all have different taste, what I like a bar patron with a very different pallet would probably not like. Lead me in a direction and I will try my best to make a good drink Dos and Don’ts at the bar? Take a seat or come in the area I am in and I will get right to you. Don’t yell, slam on the bar, cut in line when someone else has been waiting just as long. I might be short but I promise I see you waiting. What do you like most about Macon? The history it has. I was never familiar to downtown Macon until I started working at the bar. After working at The Bird I’ve met so many amazing people around town. Having our own brewery with local beer, our own radio station, so many restaurants with history behind them. What do you think we can do better? More parking. I know there has been talk about parking meters, however more space to park would be ideal. What are your hobbies where you aren’t at work? When I’m not working or going to school I have been doing a lot of home renovations. I bought a house last year and my Pinterest account has at least tripled. However school does have most of my free time lately. I hope to be in nursing school in a year, so passing Anatomy is my main goal.

Featured Track- ‘Shining In The Distance’

From Lancaster, Pennsylvania, The Stray Birds are an Americana band comprised of Maya de Vitry, Oliver Craven, Charlie Muench, and Shane Leonard. The Stray Birds had released four albums and EP’s prior to this year. Their second EP, Echo Sessions, released in 2013, featured covers of songs by Townes Van Zandt, Jimmie Rodgers and Nanci Griffith. In 2015, the Folk Alliance awarded the band with the International Song of the Year for ‘Best Medicine,’ off their second full length album of the same name. The Stray Birds have been receiving rave reviews for years, NPR naming their selftitled debut full length album one of the Top 10 Folk/ Americana albums of 2012. Their most recent album, Magic Fire was released in August and debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Bluegrass chart. For Magic Fire, the group teamed up with three-time Grammy winning producer Larry Campbell, who has worked with the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Levon Helm and Willie Nelson. The band is currently touring the US and UK.

JUSTIN WELLS

Featured Track- ‘Going Down Grinnin’

After a decade of rocking smoky bars and honky-tonks across the country with his band Fifth On The Floor, Justin Wells has emerged from the dank, bourbon soaked abyss and cigarette fog with a strong case for Americana album of the year in his first solo release, Dawn In The Distance. The record, released by August Music, LLC is a journey through Wells’ days of performing on the road, his gruff rumble of a voice recounting what he’s left behind, the next gig and crowd and the love of performing. “I’m definitely a band guy, so having only my name on the marquee has been different for me,” Wells explained during our short conversation, “this album is 100% autobiographical, just all the things I’ve been dealing with since the band split. It felt good to get back to writing and performing and getting back out on the road again.” While Wells may prefer performing and collaborating with a band as opposed to solo, with Dawn In The Distance he has shown that he can carry the bulk of the act on his own. “It’s hard to regroup and start over at 34,” he says, chuckling, but with soulful tunes like ‘Still No Rain’ and ‘The Highway Less Taken,’ he’s made it look easy.

LIVE & LOCAL HAPPENINGS, LOCALS & REGIONAL INSIGHTS

Featuring A chat with our local and regional musicians creating the “Sound & Soul” of the South by Andrea Marlowe

You won 2016’s Georgia Country Awards Male Artist of the Year. Tell me about it. That’s a process. You’ve got to through a voting stage. You have to spread the word and get people to go to their website and actually click on your name and vote. And then they tally all that up and combine it with some judges and get a score. I definitely didn’t expect to win. There were some really good guys. I was just happy to be a part of it. I got to go up to The Crazy Bull and play up there and they called my name. It was pretty wild. I didn’t expect that [laughs].

The Matt Brantley Band is a reminder of the boisterous charm and rowdiness that Southern rock and country music can often encapsulate. With songs like “Laid Back” that celebrate a day off with a drive down a dirt road with Hank Williams on the speakers and whiskey in tow, these guys show a love for their roots and an appreciation for the simplicities in life. Singer and guitarist, Matt Brantley, is backed by Rowdy Hood (guitar), Jesse Perkins (bass), and Brayden Long (drums). Brantley talked with me about becoming a singer, winning Male Artist of the Year, and fishing with his son. Was this solely your vision to play country/Southern rock music or was it a joint effort? Each one of us likes different things at the same time but we all like what we [play] as well. Brayden likes a lot of heavier, old metal stuff, which I like some of that stuff too, older heavy metal rock n roll. Rowdy’s a bluegrass guy. But we can all appreciate it and it comes together. And we’re all just old country boys. I mean that’s all we’ve ever been. So it just worked out that country mu-

sic’s just what we do best. Southern rock and roll. I mean that’s what I grew up listening to with my dad and riding around with him in the car. Did you grow up playing music as a kid? I started in middle school. I actually started playing drums. I never really played any music and it looked like fun so I figured I’d give it a shot. And I enjoyed it. I played drums all the way through high school. Early in high school I picked up the guitar when I was about 15. I never really did a lot of singing. I never really thought anybody wanted to listen to me sing, you know. I got dared to try out for Milledgeville Idol in 2012. And I tried out for it and they picked me to be in the competition and then I won second place and I was like, good grief this is pretty wild. All I’d ever really done is sat around with friends playing on the porch picking songs that we liked. We’d all sit around, have a few cold ones, and play some music. That was the extent of my musical career I thought I’d ever be doing. That’s all I’d like to do and that’s what I thought I’d be doing. I’ve done a lot more than I ever thought I would.

Are you guys working on an album? We actually have the material. We just have to get in there and do the recording. It’s got a couple of tunes on it that are leaning more towards Southern rock with a little twang in there. And then we’ve got some slow ballad style songs. I grew up a country boy. I grew up fishing with my daddy and I’ve been taking my little boy fishing. I wrote a song called “Fishing With Daddy” and it’s not so much about fishing but about teaching them things and teaching them about life. Also, my brother, which my brother has never written a song in his life, wrote part of [a song] with me. I was like, you write a song. Just put some words together and I’ll put a melody to it. And he actually sent me some lyrics and I turned it into a song. It worked out really good. Aside from being a local artist yourself, why do you think it’s important to support local music in such a mainstream music world? Everybody that is in the mainstream at one time was a local artist. If they didn’t have the support from their community they wouldn’t have made it to where they are now. I just feel like if you can’t get support for your local people then you’ll never really see them go anywhere. They just kind of give up I guess. We’re not giving up because we have people that support us and want to see us go to the next level.
