The story is just getting started.

A year-long series with a new chapter every issue. Catch up today! Thousands of people have read the first ten chapters of a year long series we are doing on the life of Ed Flowers, also known as Teddy Bear. Ed grew up in Macon, took part in his first bank robbery when he was fourteen years old, a crime for which he never went to jail for. He went on to play baseball at Dudley Hughes High, under coach Goot Stiener where his team won a State Championship in 1964. He practiced with Pete Rose. But Teddy couldn’t stay out of trouble, and ended up in Reidsville Prison right after he graduated, as fucked up as a research monkey, on morphine. Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined. We are asking that you buy a VIP Membership to 11thHouronline.com to read the rest of Teddy’s story. It’s less than the price of a digital book. $7.99. For that, you’ll get to read the rest of the story, as well as hear audio interviews with Teddy himself, with online digital video coming this fall. The money will help The 11th Hour continue to offer great content, and calendars and reviews to our readers for years to come. So purchase your membership today and continue to read Teddy Bear. Believe us, the story is JUST GETTING STARTED. VISIT 11thHourOnline.com.

MACON’S FIRST MOVEABLE FEAST The term Moveable Feast is derived from Hemmingway’s novel bearing the same title. It means, “an experience that one takes with them the rest of their lives”. Macon MGMT and the Dirt Farmers have joined forces to give Macon a true Farmer to Fork Dinner & Demo series aimed at raising awareness and supporting local farmers as well as local charities. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds for each episode will be donated to the charity of which we are partnered with for that particular episode. Each episode in the series will be a 3 day event. The first day is the dinner. The second day gives attendees a chance to get into the kitchen with our chefs at a live cooking demo at Robinson Home. The third day is one focused on service, wherein our team will give thanks for the

blessings we have received the two days prior and pay it forward by conducting a service of any leftover food at a local homeless mission. The first Homegrown Feast will take place April 22-23. Organizers have partnered with Historic Macon Foundation and dinner will take place in the tea room of the Sidney Lanier Cottage. The menu will feature 12 courses + libations of Macon Beer Company, Widow Jane Whiskey, & Farmhouse Wines. The College Hill Corridor Commission has announced eight projects are receiving funding through the Knight Community Projects initiative. The eight recipients, sharing a pool of $50,000, represent the best of 47 applications from local residents and organizations who requested funding for ideas to continue creative placemaking efforts in the College Hill Corridor. The projects to be funded will support: - Installing a sign at Washington Memorial Library to highlight it as a monument submitted by their staff and board. - Developing a traffic study and landscape plan to create an urban trailhead at the intersection of Appleton Lane and Columbus Street submitted by the Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority. - Designing and conceptualizing a new and unique playground for Tattnall Square Park submitted by Brent Meyer a College Hill resident. - Creating a branding campaign for the Beall’s Hill Neighborhood including a logo, website, and light pole banners submitted by the Beall’s Hill Neighborhood Association. - Producing the #LiveInTheCorridor marketing campaign to help attract new residents to College Hill submitted by Historic Macon Foundation.

- Developing a traffic study and landscape plan to add pedestrian crosswalks at the intersection of College Street and Coleman Avenue submitted by Brad Belo, College Hill resident. - Creating interactive maker exhibits at the Second Sunday concert series as part of a Spark Macon initiative submitted by Spark Macon. - Introducing electronic timing equipment allowing for nationally sanctioned youth races at the Magnolia Soapbox Derby submitted by their board. The Knight Community Projects initiative, administered by the College Hill Corridor Commission, was made possible through a partnership between the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Mercer University. The Commission began accepting applications earlier this year and held three rounds of voting to select the eight recipients. All Knight Community Projects are to be completed by the end of year. “By investing in the ideas of those who believe in the future of the College Hill Corridor, we can bring new vibrancy to our city, engage people to make it even better, and help ensure talented people stay in the city and make it their home,” said Beverly Blake, Knight Foundation program director for Macon.”

Macon one of 19 cities to benefit from $5 million Knight Cities challenge The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced that 37 innovative projects will share $5 million as winners of the Knight Cities Challenge. Each of the ideas centers on helping cities attract and keep talented people, expand economic opportunities and create a culture of civic engagement. The challenge attracted more than 4,500 ideas to make the 26 communities where Knight invests more vibrant places to live and work. It asked innovators of all kinds to answer the question: What’s your best idea to make cities more successful? The 37 winners proposed a host of ideas, from exploring Detroit’s untold history through monthly bike tours that blend storytelling with neighborhood discovery to using hip-hop to provide hands-on business training to members of low-income groups in Philadelphia, from developing a toolkit to create temporary pop-up social spaces at voting polls in Long Beach to creating a new cultural hub in West Palm Beach’s Northwest Historic District. “At its core, the Knight Cities Challenge is about discovering and connecting civic innovators, creative interventionists who inspire positive change,” said Alberto Ibargüen, Knight Foundation president. “The winners reflect this goal. Their ideas have the potential to create stronger communities and spaces that spur learning, engagement and growth.” Open to any individual, business, government or nonprofit, the Knight Cities Challenge has just two rules: (1) A submission may come from anywhere, but the project must take place in or benefit one or more of the 26 communities where Knight invests and (2) the idea should focus on one or more of three drivers of city

success: Talent: Ideas that help cities attract and keep talented people; Opportunity: Ideas that create economic prospects by breaking down divides and making new connections; Engagement: Ideas that spur connection and civic involvement. Winning projects are based in 19 of the 26 communities where Knight invests including: Akron, Ohio; Boulder, Colo.; Columbus, Ga.; Charlotte, N.C.; Detroit; Gary, Ind.; Grand Forks, N.D.; Lexington, Ky.; Macon, Ga.; Miami; Long Beach, Calif.; Milledgeville, Ga.; Palm Beach County, Fla.; Philadelphia; St. Paul, Minn.; San Jose, Calif; State College, Pa; and Tallahassee, Fla. The challenge launched in October 2015. Finalists were announced in January. This is the second year of the Knight Cities Challenge. In March 2015 Knight announced 32 winners of the inaugural Knight Cities Challenge. The 2015 challenge winners have created innovative solutions aimed at connecting people of all backgrounds and incomes, inviting people into active civic engagement and helping keep and attract talented people in their communities. They include: the Pop-Up Pool Project, which reimagines Philadelphia’s city pools as neighborhood assets that attract a broad range of people of all incomes and backgrounds; Re:Brand Detroit, which aims to spark reinvestment in Detroit’s neighborhoods through entrepreneurship; and Minimum Grid Maximum Impact, which improves neighborhood life by creating a network of bike and pedestrian connections between Midtown and Uptown Columbus, Ga. The challenge will reopen for submissions in fall 2016. For more on the Knight Cities Challenge, visit knightcities.org and knightcities.org/winners2016. For informa-

While we received “only” 4,500 applications this year, they were of a consistent high quality. We were thrilled with the number of innovative, creative and interesting applications that sought to advance talent, opportunity and engagement, what we see as the three prime drivers of city success. tion and updates follow @knightfdn and #knightcities on Twitter.

A few of the Winning Ideas: Macon, Ga. - Pop-up Minimum Grid by NewTown Macon, The Macon-Bibb UDA and Department of Parks and Beautification | $151,900 | submitted by Josh Rogers. Charlotte, N.C. - Can Do Signs by the city of Charlotte | $27,900 | submitted by Sarah Hazel. Rethinking municipal signs that typically tell people “what not to do,” to spur fun, imagination and positivity throughout Charlotte; the project will create signs that provide amusing, enchanting, fun options: You can dance! You can sing! You can skip! Milledgeville, Ga. - The Democracy Lab by the Twin Lakes Library System | $25,000 | submitted by Stephen Houser. Creating a shared space in downtown Milledgeville, located next to City Hall and near a makerspace and a library, that will foster civic engagement through public events, meetings that gather residents and leaders to problem-solve, and better connect civic institutions. q Accountability. It is no secret that Sheriff Davis terminated the employment of

some jailers and deputies since becoming sheriff. It is no secret he reprimanded, made reassignments and ordered remedial training. H Sheriff Davis brought accountability to the Sheriff’s Office with a very strong Internal Affairs Division. With State Certification achieved for the first time in Bibb County Sheriff’s Office history, all employees now follow state standards and recognized policies.

Accountability makes for a stronger agency – and for a better Bibb County.

q Results.

Because Macon-Bibb is a diverse community, each neighborhood has different needs. One need, though, is consistent for each: SAFETY. Everyone wants to feel safe in their own homes and on their own streets. Sheriff Davis spent his term in office

making sure the citizens of Bibb County have a way to make their concerns heard and he ensured those concerns are met. H His patrol deputies and investigators respond when needed, and Sheriff Davis enacted many proactive initiatives to help Bibb County neighborhoods move forward. H Through the Sheriff’s Outreach Section, the community’s needs are addressed using school, church and youth programs and Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch initiatives.

q Progress.

Sheriff Davis found that getting out into the community and truly listening is making a difference. His Walks for Safety brought about progress in neighborhoods that just needed a little help: overgrown lots have been mowed and cut with inmate work crews; houses in disrepair have been noted and requested to be addressed by County code enforcers; drug dealers have been identified, and afterschool programs have been implemented. H His active Neighborhood Watch and Neighborhood Association participation led to changes in patrol allocation and duties for his Sheriff’s Response Team. He listens to concerns and puts plans in motion to address them.

RE-ELECT

VOTEraT DEmOc24 may PAID FOR BY THE COMMITTEE TO RE-ELECT SHERIFF DAVID DAVIS

12 APRIL 19 - MAY 3, 2016

Progress can be proven in each neighborhood and there are no plans to slow down – only to keep moving forward.

BEST BAND OF 2016 by Luke Usry | photo Scott Jackson

Good NIGHT It’s no real secret that Macon is a city abounding with rock history landmarks. The Big House, Grant’s Lounge, Tic Toc Room (Once upon a time called Ann’s Tic Toc Lounge), The H&H Restaurant, Rose Hill Cemetery, and countless others… scattered fragments of geography and architecture that has each played a part in the robust musical legacy that has come to define Macon to much of the world. These monuments to our cultural and artistic heritage are invaluable vistas into the city’s music history, constant reminders of a past so iconic that it can shift our perspective of Macon’s musical legacy into the past tense. Do not be deceived into believing that this city’s capacity for musical greatness closed up shop with Capricorn. It is alive and well, fueled by a vibrant, kaleidoscopic music scene with modern landmarks of its very own. Monuments not to the glory of Macon’s musical past, but to the brilliant promise of its future. One of these contemporary landmarks sits just off Pierce Avenue. Ensconced within the crowded residential block, the duplex is unassuming and easy to miss. It’s broad, spacious front porch faces the street with a quiet demeanor that seems oblivious to the rapturous, melodic alchemy that routinely occurs behind 14 APRIL 19 - MAY 3, 2016

those twin front doors. For the last two years, this duplex has served as the home base of Good Night Alive, one of the most intriguing and exciting bands to show up on the scene in Macon in recent memory. Composed of Zack Horton (Guitar/ Vocals), Bobby McCullough (Guitar), Nick Crumpton (bass), and Jesse Horton (drums), Good Night Alive has wasted no time solidifying its status as a musical juggernaut. Although Good Night Alive wasn’t established in earnest until early 2014, their first practice was hardly a meeting of strangers. McCullough, Crumpton, and the Horton brothers share a decade-old friendship that encompassed early on the quartet’s shared talent and passion for music. They would spend the next several years as a kind of fluid, unnamed band, their countless hours of lighthearted jamming gradually yielding an intensive musical chemistry that continues to be one of the GNA’s greatest assets both on and off the stage, Originating as a five-piece indie electronic outfit, the band’s early sonic explorations melded live instrumentation with electronically synthesized sounds. The songs penned during this era by lead songwriter Zack Horton demonstrate his

acute lyrical and melodic sensibility while also varying enough in compositional style to indicate the type of experimentation paramount to every fledgling band’s quest to find a sound all its own. When late 2014 brought about the amicable departure of their GNA’s keyboardist, the band found itself faced with a major creative dilemma. The absence of the keyboards left a prominent void in the band’s sound, one that could really only be filled by a replacement musician, or a comprehensive overhaul of the group’s established musical dynamic. Ultimately choosing the latter option, little did the members of GNA know that they had their first step in the development of the resonant, awe inspiring sound with roots woven deep into the soil of alternative and indie rock and branches heavy with the fruits of innovation. This shift toward a harder, more guitar-driven sound not only only lent itself to the smaller lineup but also presented Horton with a vast new artistic landscape ripe for exploration. And explore it he did, the band’s beloved duplex serving as host to fragments of musical brilliance that would coalesce into an arsenal of robust, compelling material that finalized the band’s departure from the electronic sounds of its past.

After a period of fine-tuning and natural evolution, this batch of new matured into a collective body of work bearing all the components necessary to bring the songs alive inside the recording studio. After a stint at Symmetry Studios in Warner Robins, the band emerged victorious, the authors of an album that they would simply call “Duplex” out of reverence for the birthplace of most of the album’s musical components. The album itself really is something to behold, a riveting, inspiring musical journey that manages somehow to convey the wealth of courage, passion, and creative genius that was undoubtedly required to bring it into existence. Awash with the momentum spawned by Duplex’s release this past December, Good Night Alive shows all the signs of a band bound for great things, a sentiment that was only further bolstered by a 2016 win of the 11th Hour Reader’s Choice Awards’ coveted prize for best band. Armed with an innovative sound and a seemingly bottomless reservoir of talent, Good Night Alive has reached iconic status within a music scene hard at work writing its own chapter of Macon’s music history that, because of bands like Good Night Alive, promises never to fade into obscurity.

NATIVE/NEW Who Danielle Sudderth Native Roswell, GA Occupation Director of Marketing, Cox Capitol Theatre

BEST PLACE TO SEE LIVE MUSIC: COX CAPITOL THEATRE By Nicole Thurston A self-proclaimed nerd turned music buff, 26-year-old Danielle Sudderth made a life changing decision that not only put her on a path to living and working in Macon, it may have been the move that will one day take her to the top. Born in Roswell, Georgia, Sudderth spent most of her youth in Birmingham, Alabama. She was considered a happy, creative, adventurous kid with a deep appreciation and understanding of math and science. “I was always a science and math nerd in school,” she explained, “ I love nature, and formulas just make so much sense to me.” She graduated from UGA with a degree in genetics, however, it was her love of music that took her in a different direction. “While living in Athens, I fell in love with the music industry. After graduating and working at a biopharma lab, I started working at the Georgia Theatre and took some classes in UGA’s Music Business Program. Then, I ended up here!” Here, as in Macon, Georgia – home to some of the most profound music icons in American music history. “Learning there could be a career for me in the live music scene was a big revelation to me. I’m so happy... and still a little scared...that I made the decision to quit a solid lab tech job to go back to school and work my way into the music industry. I’ll always appreciate my friends’ and family’s support with that, more than they will ever know!”

Though the move was life changing and a bit of the gamble, that decision has not only paid off for Sudderth, but also for Maconites and those in the surrounding counties. As the Director of Marketing for the Cox Capitol Theatre, Sudderth and the team from the Moonhanger Group have brought back a vibrant music scene of top billing to downtown Macon. “Macon has taught me a lot in a short amount of time. I’m still figuring this place out and my success at that differs every day. My favorite thing about Macon is the people who have welcomed my goofy self into this community. I also love being part of what seems to be a neat little cultural revolution here.” Always on top of the music scene, Sudderth makes sure to spend her free time discovering what’s new and trending, “I go to as many concerts and music festivals as I can, mostly in Athens and Atlanta. I’m pretty much always listening to and discovering music,” she explained, “I also run a blog called Festival Survival Guide and I used to write for a few other music discovery sites - mostly hip hop and electronic music - I would love to get back into that type of blogging again.” When she is not blogging or attending concerts, she stays active by running, playing soccer, and walking her dog, Britta. But at the end of the day – it will always be the music, “Music festivals are my favorite places to patron. Hands down. And Red Rocks Amphitheater. In Macon, there’s a good chance you’ll find me at Rookery, Dovetail, or El Camino with a beer when I don’t have a show to run at the Cox.”

11 Random Facts about Danielle: 1) My dog is not named after a water filter 2) I was on MTV multiple times in the mid 2000’s - well, my high school, Hoover High School was on Two-A-Days while I went there 3) Hip hop saved my life (that’s completely exaggerated but I do really love hip hop) 4) My most prized possession is my fleece unicorn onesie 5) I’m a mathlete (competed in math team tournaments) 6) I’m a basshead (dedicated Bassnectar fan - but not one of the annoying ones) 7) Humpback whales are my favorite animal 8) I’ve seen every episode of Survivor 9) My ideal date involves surfing silly YouTube videos 10) I wish I could communicate with emojis...sometimes I try 11) I HAVE TWO LEFT FEET - false, just wanted to draw your attention to make sure you read this last bit...go follow Cox Capitol Theatre on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/ Snapchat (@capitolmacon) 11thHourOnline.com 17

BEST BOUTIQUE IN MACON GINGER MICHELLE By Nicole Thurston Since 2001, Ginger Michelle has been the go-to name in shopping local for the latest clothing and accessories. Originally located on First Street in Macon, the popular boutique relocated to the Publix Shopping Center off of Bass Road, a move that the owners Grace Anderson Simpson, as well as Charlie and Sara Anderson, say made a big difference for their customers. “When the city decided to enlarge the park, it brought some issues, such as parking and we decided to relocate.” With parking no longer being a hindrance, the store has continued to grow and thrive. “I would say our welcoming atmosphere sets us apart from other stores,” explains Sara, “Our friendly accommodating employees go out of their way to make sure the customer’s needs are being met, which isn’t something you find when you go in every store.” That local caring flare has been the returning factor for many middle Georgians. “Our favorite part about doing business in Macon is the amazing people we meet and the relationships we have made over the years. We love our customers.” Ginger Michelle specializes in Women’s clothing and accessories. “We get our inspiration from the latest trends. The Scene

OP-ED

Spilled Milk & Other Atrocities by KAREN GIBSON AKA Law-Momma I’m not originally from Macon. I feel like I used to say that a lot here because it seemed to matter a lot. Where are you from? Where were you born? Are you from here? And I used to immediately say “No. No, I’m not from here. I’m from North Carolina.” Because people expect to know if you’re ACTUALLY from Macon, or if you’re some breed of Northern transplant. It’s a funny little town we live in, isn’t it? It’s 2/3 old and 1/3 new and the old doesn’t like the new and the vice versa and there’s this constant “at odds” about things as though at any moment there’s either going to be a riot or a rave. Because Macon is… old. And I think everyone has their own definition of the “old” that is Macon: old buildings, old classism, old racism, old and set in her ways. But I mean “old” in all the best ways. Macon still embraces the small town feel… the idea that when you go downtown to a parade, you’re going to see everyone you know from everywhere you go. When your kid walks into an event anywhere in town, he’s going to immediately recognize three fourths of the children already there. When you decide to go to a new church, you’ll discover at least fourteen people you know filling the pews. There aren’t a lot of places in this country that still feel like that… part Mayberry, part Wisteria Lane, and part The Real Housewives of Pleasant Hill. It’s this sweet and sour mix of people and ideas and places that seem as though they might not fit well… people and ideas who seem at odds with each other but can somehow, I think, find a way to meet in the middle over cherry ice cream and pink swirling fountains. Because everybody loves that stuff, right? This town of ours is not utopia. It’s not perfect. But is it special? You bet. See the thing about Macon is that it’s sort of like your aging Grandmother. She’s a little crazy, right? She’s got a lot of health problems, and maybe for someone who doesn’t KNOW her, she looks like she could kick the bucket at any minute. You may have to try and explain away some of her outdated beliefs to people who aren’t from here. You may shrug and

say “Well… she’s old” when your friends ask you why she says some of the things she says. But through it all, you love her to pieces because she’s a part of who you are… a part of the person you’ve become through the struggles of your life. She may look old in a lot of ways, but she’s feisty, and she’s trying her best to accept beliefs that are different than the ones she held since before you were born. Yes, I came to Macon, and I found that this place… this silly, ridiculously dated, cracking at some of the corners place, is a big part of who I am now. It is where I am raising my son. It is where I found love again, where I found a job that suits me perfectly, and where I plan to stay and poke and prod until this little Grandmother of mine nods and smiles and says “You win. I’m not too old to learn new tricks.” Because she isn’t… not really. Macon isn’t too old, too small, or too stuck in her ways. We all just do a little too much sitting back and assuming she will be. When my 98 year old Granny was alive, I always assumed she used outdated terms because she was too old to change… turns out, she used out dated terms because no one ever told her they were outdated. No one told her it was time to change… time to embrace the fact that to be alive at her age was an amazing gift and it gave her the opportunity to do what very few people get to do: open her mind to the thoughts and ideas of an entirely different century. I believe Macon can do that, too. I believe we can find a common ground between black and white, between gay and straight, between religious and non-religious, and yes… between young and old. I genuinely believe in the goodness at the heart of this little town that has stolen my heart with its Cherry Blossom bed races and funky little craft brewery. I believe in what she can become without losing the warmth and charm of who she is. Because unlike the arrogant, entitled, know-it –all, I was when I arrived here twelve years ago, I now know there’s nothing wrong with being a small, old, town. In fact… there’s just something perfectly right about it. So now when people ask me where I’m from, I smile proudly, open my arms to embrace all this beautiful insanity and proudly announce: “Here. I’m from right here.”

Karen Gibson, aka “Law Momma”, is a Macon transplant by way of North Carolina. She’s a die-hard Tar Heel fan, an often sleep-deprived wife and mother, a workers’ compensation attorney, and a lover of all things literary… except books on tape. Unless they’re read by Alan Rickman. 11thHourOnline.com 25

The Scene I N T E RV I E W b y B R A D E VA N S

Who Kiefer Sutherland When Tuesday, May 3 Where Cox Capitol Theatre I imagine that Kiefer Sutherland is thankful for the person that handles his publicity, especially during the tour supporting his new country album, Down in a Hole. He’s kind enough to do interviews, when all anyone wants to talk about is Young Guns, or Jack Bauer, or Flatliners, or Julia Roberts. I don’t know how that couldn’t get annoying. And I was no exception to that rule. Kiefer Sutherland haunted my childhood. I could spend two hours talking with him about his movies. I once lived right across the street from the railroad trestle in Santa Cruz that he and the other vampires made Michael hang from in Lost Boys. (He’d be fascinated to know that, right - I mean, it’s like we’re practically related.) So when his agent told me he only had fifteen minutes, I was sad, but I understood. And during those fifteen minutes I found out that Kiefer is just as cool as I thought he’d be. Due to an email mix up, he actually called me a day earlier than I thought he would. I had to pull over on the side of the road, get my recorder ready, and wing it. But I enjoyed every second of those fifteen minutes. I think you will to.

Kiefer Sutherland

Well, thank you for doing this, man. I had actually scheduled your interview for tomorrow, so we’re a day early. But I just pulled over into a cemetery to do this. It’s actually the place were Duane Allman and Berry Oakley from the Allman Brothers are buried. You’ve got to be kidding me. Whoa. Well, thank you for taking the time out to do this. Thank you, buddy. I literally have no questions ready - they’re all back at the office. Good thing I’ve been preparing for this my whole life. I feel like, though, with a little more time, I could have come up with a great segway into a question about Lost Boys, since I’m in a cemetery and all. Please don’t. (Laughs) Okay. Well let’s talk about the passing of Merle Haggard yesterday. That’s a big deal, right? Were you a fan, did you ever meet Merle? Yes, I was a fan, and I kind of did meet Merle. I was playing The Crystal Palace. It’s a place that Buck Owens built up in Bakersfield. I was talking with the sound guy during sound check and Merle’s name got brought up. Just so happened the sound guy knew Merle, and he emailed him while I was there, told him I was making a country record. Merle emailed right back and wished me luck with it. But listen, Merle was one of the greatest country singers to ever live. He was that Bakersfield sound. It really doesn’t get any more authentic than Merle, does it? I mean, he was a prisoner at San Quentin on the day Johnny Cash recorded the album there. I know, man. Can you imagine? That’s just crazy. Well, I’d say you have some outlaw country credentials of your own. You’ve spent some time in jail. You tackled the hell out of that Christmas tree! I’m going to take that as a compliment. It was meant as one. Good, thank you.

When did you get into country music? Well, Hank Williams was always played around my house growing up. Now if I was listening to music with my brother, it was always AC/DC or Aerosmith, but my Dad listened to Hank Williams. But that wasn’t the kind of music I was really into as a child. I got into roping, after a couple of Westerns I made, and started competing in the rodeo. I trained down in Mexico, and got really good at it.

When is the last time you talked to Lou Diamond Phillips? About four weeks ago.

I read that today. You actually won several competitions, didn’t you? Yeah. I think people thought it was a publicity stunt at first, but I was really into it. I never had the balls to get on a bull, but I loved the rodeo, and I roped for probably 10 years or so before I started feeling it too much. But when I was in that scene, country music was a big part of it, and that’s when I really started getting into it.

That makes me very happy. Let’s just jump into Jack Bauer for a second. I literally could talk about this stuff for hours so just be happy they only gave me fifteen minutes. I’m happy to talk about Jack with you. Or anything else. Come by the show and I’ll buy you a drink and we can talk as long as you want to.

Now when you said you got into it after you made a “couple of Westerns,” you were talking about Young Guns and Young Guns II, right? Those are two of the best Westerns made during my lifetime. Will you please please humor me and tell me a story from that set? I don’t mind at all, man. I’ll tell you, everyone wanted to be in that movie. Westerns just weren’t being made during that time. So everyone came on that set. Tom Cruise is in the first Young Guns. We put him in a beard and shot him off the roof. Jon Bon Jovi was also in the movie. We were all buddies with him back in those days. We put him in a beard and shot him off the roof too. Not many people know that. And after we wrapped the first movie, we all went out drinking. Jon Bon Jovi was all in Emilio’s ear about doing the soundtrack for the sequel. Emilio kind of shrugged it off. We didn’t know if there would be a sequel. But Jon sat over in a corner, I don’t even think he was taking shots with the rest of us, and he was scribbling on a napkin all night. By the end of the night, he had three napkins, and on those three napkins he had written the song “Blaze of Glory.” Emilio had those napkins framed over his mantle for a long time.

I don’t know of many on screen friendships like you and Lou have. Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed come to mind. I’m honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as them. No. I don’t get to talk to Lou as much as I’d like, but we do keep in touch and we are certainly still friends.

You can count on that then. I’d be honored. Did Jack Bauer rub off on your personality at all when you were filming that show? I heard you accidently beat up some guys filming a SNL skit. Is that true? First of all, that role was a gift. It was an honor to play him and I loved every minute of doing that show. But yes, that story is true. Very embarrassing. Some guys from SNL were filming a sketch out in LA. They had an actor dressed up like an old lady and someone was supposed to snatch her purse. I just so happened to be driving by this scene in my car. And I didn’t see the cameras or anything, I just saw the old lady’s purse getting snatched. I jumped out of my car and ran after the guy, threw him on the ground, and was basically beating him up when I noticed the old lady hitting me on the back with her cane. Then I noticed it was a guy dressed up like an old lady and he was screaming, “We’re filming a sketch! Wait. . . are you Kiefer Sutherland?” It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Well, I know you gotta go. Thanks so much for doing this, again! Looking forward to your show! Please come by. I will buy you that drink.

Our small town in Oklahoma nearly shut down every fall Friday afternoon in anticipation of Football Friday Nights. 3. Must See The Grand Opera House. This Theater is one of the prettiest I have ever seen. Every time I walk in, to attend a performance, my eyes study the ornate historic structure. It just makes me smile. 4. Must Go To a service at Ingleside Baptist Church. I usually refer to the lead pastor, Dr. Tim McCoy, as a “Preacher/Teacher”. He makes every sermon easy to understand, as he breaks down biblical truth. Plus the level of talent at the Christmas & Easter productions is amazing. 5. Living in Macon I LOVE Macon for it’s loving people, small town values, giving spirit, beautiful architecture, and most of all, because it’s the place where I met & married my precious husband, Jerry Evans. 28 APRIL 19 - MAY 3, 2016

LIVE SHOW REVIEW

Megan Jean & the KFB words & photos Luke Usry

“I’ll send you postcards, postcards from the afterlife…I’ll send them postmarked, postmarked from hell,” sings Megan Jean in “These Bones,” a song featured on Megan Jean and the KFB’s newest full length record “The Devil Herself.” But perched just inside the open door Mercedes Sprinter that she shares as a mobile domicile with husband and musical partner Byrne Klay, smiling sweetly with an angelic little dog in her lap, she doesn’t seem like someone destined for an afterlife of fire, brimstone, and Nickelback records. Jean radiates a warm, amicable demeanor doesn’t come close to mirroring many of the macabre themes in her lyrics. But that’s just another element of the duo’s dark whimsy that their fans find so endearing. Speaking in the generalities of musical genres, Megan Jean and the KFB’s work is undefinable. They have a few appropriately creative ways of describing it that include “Americana for the end of the world,” and “a metal band, if it was 1927.” Their music is very much rooted in traditional American music, drawing many of its innumerable subtle influences from such pre-rock styles as blues, folk, and cabaret. Performing primarily on

banjo, Klay provides refulgent, jangling melodies onto which Jean layers percussion and adds a glorious and powerful singing voice that cries with the echoes of

crackly old photographs and cavernous vaudevillian theaters. Together they tell timeless stories against musical backdrops that call to mind images of sepia toned, Steinbeckian Americana with enough Southern Gothic flair to win the heart of even the most zealous blind street preacher. Megan Jean and the KFB’s latest show at the Roasted Café establishes that the band has developed a habit of stopping in Macon during their near-constant tour cycle. Given the lustrous, jarring, hypnotic performances they bring with them when they come, we certainly hope it will be a hard habit to break. Or, if they never do find their way back, I hope they’ll at least send a postcard.

1. What is your favorite cocktail?

Meet your Bartender

2. Favorite beers at Just Tap’d?

Darks - Christmas Bomb imperial stout from Prairie, Last Snow coconut coffee porter from Funky Buddha, and Big Shanty graham cracker stout from Burnt Hickory (GA beer!) Medium - Burton Baton oak aged imperial IPA from Dogfish Head, Ode to Mercy brown ale from Wild Heaven (GA beer!), Insanity barrel age barley wine from Weyerbacher (currently available at Just Tap’d in Macon), Laughing Skull amber from RedBrick (GA beer!). Lighter beers: I’m very fond of sours such as Athen and Petrus currently on tap at Just Tap’d. I also really enjoy tart fruity beers such as lambics and ciders. It’s fun to mix the sweets ciders and lambics with the sour beers so you get the best of both worlds: sweet & tart.

34 APRIL 19 - MAY 3, 2016

3. Do’s & Don’ts at the bar?

Don’t be afraid to tell your bartender what drinks you enjoy, it’s ok to like domestics and not be familiar with craft beer or cocktails. It’s a place to start. But also, don’t be afraid to branch out and try something new. If you like certain things, a good bartender will introduce you to something similar. Some places like Just Tap’d offer “flights” (aka a sampler platter of beer or wine) so you can try different things and find something you like. (A please) don’t take glass ware from one bar to another or home unless you pay for the glass. Do be sure to have a safe ride home. Do ask for a cab number if you need it.

My favorite cocktail I created while working at Ninja was the Wasabi-tini. I actually shook a pinch of wasabi with the liquor mix for it to dissolve, and topped it with a twisted lime wedge. It was surprisingly smooth, zesty and refreshing. I had a few other fun cocktails such as Ocmulgee Spirits, the Cotton Gin, and Shark Drank which had a watermelon wedge carved like a shark fin rising out of the blue drank.

4. Hobbies?

Hobbies include painting, pyrography, gardening, biking, reading and cooking.

5. Best recent night on the town?

HEIDI CLINITE Just Tap’d

One of my best girlfriends and I had a margarita and tacos at El Camino followed by going to a hockey game for the first time. Macon Mayhem surprisingly won against a team that usually kicks their butt. It was really fun and intense!
