Megan Lloyd Manuel Aja-Herrera Sect. 23 11-1:30 Winter Quarter Philippe Starck Philippe Starck was born January 18, 1949 in Paris, France. This French designer learned the primaries of drawing and showed a high interest in design at a young age, and later studied at Ecole Nissim de Camondo in Paris. His career really started to take off in the early eighties when he gained international fame with the success of Café Costes, setting the bar for future cafes. All throughout his career he has dabbled in multiple forms of design. Interior, architecture, furniture, industrial, product, to name a few. As an Interior Designer, he has designed over fifty Hotels and Restaurants, and strives to push the bar of what is expected. The Paramount Hotel in New York, a landmark building off Time Square, is a classic example of his work. Using contemporary furniture and midcentury modern lighting designed by DelightFULL, he completely redesigned the Lobby of the Hotel. Another great Interior Design project is the MAMA Shelter Hotel in Bordeaux, France. The building is a luxury condominium, each apartment featuring large windows and Starck faucets and lighting. Starck has designed numerous products. The ‘Starck’ being one of them. It is a hand-held tablet which can be used both left and right handed. Equipped with a flip stand to sit on desks, counters, etc. As far as I can tell it did not reach market. On another note, there is another design of his which did hit the market selling anywhere from $50 to $1700. This is the Juicy Salif Citrus Squeezer. Designed back in 1990, it was considered the most “controversial lemon squeezer of the century.” Another successful design is the AXOR Starck organic – water saving faucet. This is part of a luxury bathroom collection by Axor, minimalist designed pieces all built to conserve water. He has also dabbled in furniture design. One said design being for Emeco, a company which makes Aluminum chairs. He has paired with them to make several designs. Another chair he Designed is a rather famous design, the Louis Ghost Armchair. This was designed after the Louis 16th chair shape, but is made of Polycarbonate, making it see through. Hence the name, Ghost Chair. Finally, there is his architecture. A popular project he has is called P.A.T.H, which stands for prefabricated accessible technological homes. They are green, cost-efficient homes which use the latest in technology benefit the consumer and the environment.
