DESIGN FIRM Fall 2010 Studio Boston Architectural College For this project we were given an existing site of 5,000 square feet in the South End. We were asked to design a space for a design firm that consisted of two Principles, ten designers/architects, ten interns, and two administrative assistants. The space needed to at least have a conference room, materials library, copy/file room, reception area, break room, and restrooms with an ADA stall. I first has to chose the kind of firm I wanted to design for, I chose to do a firm specializing in theme park design. Then, I developed an abstract perspective collage and bubble diagrams based on this concept. I focused on bringing the same feeling to the space that a theme park creates by analyzing what it is a theme park means to me and what I think the work environment should be in for a firm that designs theme parks.

DESIGN FIRM
Fall 2010 Studio Boston Architectural College CONCEPT: This firm specializes in amusement park design. They are responsible for creating environments that are fun, exciting and remove people from their normal everyday world. The architecture and interior design in amusement parks are meant to capture the imagination and provide an adventure for the guests. The interior of the firm should do the same for any clients or guests visiting the firm and provide the designers with an environment that allows them to think creatively.

I was exploring the use of curves with rectilinear shapes. I also wanted express my intent for the ceiling to be the most important aspect of the building. I chose to use color on half to represent the fun portion of the building guests to the firm should experience as opposed to the black and white or more serious portion of the building where the offices are and the design work takes place.

COMMUNITY CENTER Fall 2010 Studio Boston Architectural College For this project, we were given an existing site in the South End and had to develop a design for a community center. The center is primarily for lower income women in the community and provides access to art, aerobics and vocational learning. Three main people were given to us as the owners, there is a recptionist and a marketing director. The owners need office space to meet with people about donations since the center runs primarily on donations. Three classes are offered at the center, yoga, spinning and sewing. The classes take place during the evening on weekdays. On Friday nights there is a public art gallery and on Saturday there is a public farmer’s market.
My concept is based around the words interlaced and airy. Airy refers to the clients desire to maximize natural sunlight in the space and the need for a mostly open floor plan. Interlaced refers to the community center itself. To me, interlaced means individual spaces that are joined together in some way and share a common element. This community center is for women, and for me the three activities offered here are all very different, sewing, yoga and spinning, and all speak to the womens individual personalities. The women are joined together by this center and joined to their community by the farmers market and art gallery offered here for anyone.

I chose fixtures that I feel represent my concept of interlaced

I used the bright green to accent where the overhangs take place. The green is green rubber tiles on the floor and green paint on the walls and ceilings

CARTER SCHOOL Fall 2010-Present Community Service Project I have been working on a team community service project through the Boston Architectural College. The project is to design an addition to a special education school, the Carter School, in south Boston. We started the project with a series of meetings with the staff at the school to determine their expectations and needs for the addition. We also analyzed the existing school and what their current daily needs are. The addition is to include a pool, a sensory wing with a sensory room, art room and music room, and a gym.

C USTOM LIGHT FIXTURE Spring 2011 Concept: Water The form: water can take any form, so it is the merging of an organic object with a rectilinear object. Light: water refracts light so the cut outs in the rectilinear form control the way light is distributed so that it is unexpected and not lined up evenly.
Section showing light distribution TYPE OF FIXTURE: Table lamp MATERIALS: Porcelain rectangle interior and interior post for lamp, hemp MAINTENANCE: It can be relamped by simply reaching into the center and replacing the lamp
