Intro

“Finding new ways to create unique and exciting type means that you’re always on the hunt for insipration.”

T

ypography creates an experience before users have even read a single word or clicked a button. Typography doesn’t just tell a story, it creates an atmosphere and emotional response the same way as a tone of voice. If you dream to be the next great typographer in this world, whether designing amazing Open Type Fonts, weaving beautiful hand-drawn letters or creating your own custom typeface designs, I assure you this book is for you. G ET STARTED Get Inspired

CREATE

Designing a typeface

can be a long journey so it’s prudent to have a clear vision of its purpose. You might begin with something purely self-expressive, maybe you were inspired by something and wanted to get creative. However, the usual practice is to create a typeface in response to a brief. Developing your own brief will inevitably require research and reflection. How will it be used: is it for a specific project or personal use only? Is there a problem you might solve? How might your typeface fit into a landscape alongside similar designs? What makes it unique? All these contribute to an outcome in the end which will hopefully reflect the decided brief.

The options are vast. Typefaces have been created, for example, specifically for academic texts, to provide better number systems for engineering documents or as a one-off for public lettering.

Only when you know what your typeface will actually be used for can you really get started on the design and create. Get inspired. Look at the legends. What kind of type do you like?

“The Inspiration for a typeface can come from anything, a tree, a ladder, rocks, people, old office supplies laying around. Pretty much anything and everything you can find.” Decide what kind of typeface you want to create. Ask yourself what you want to do with the typeface your creating... Do you want to create a typeface from your handwriting? Or use it for bold, headline type? Having a general idea of what your end goal is, will help to make a lot of the decisions throughout the process of creating your own typeface. Inspiration for Type Creation

I love that the same word, passage or even letter can be treated in bunch of different ways and embody entirely different meanings... That and through subtleties like a slight shift in line weight, the elongation of a tail or the arc you use, a letter can go from contemporary to traditional or happy to sad in a single stroke...

By lifting typography from the computer screen or the printed page, I find the letterforms are given new life, as are the words themselves, and people respond in such a positive way to the haptic nature of the pieces and they are drawn to touch them and re examine the letterforms and I get such pleasure from their reactions..

I love working with food, but I’ve had such amazing experiences with other materials. Various ropes/strings have proven a fun challenge as they require twisting and monolinear treatments, fabrics look elegant in their own right, plants unfold in my hands and have a timetable before they wilt; the

world is full of potential materials.

BEHIND THE WORDS Is a Keen Eye

In my work I try to convey that nostalgic trip through my vague recollections in as true a sense as possible, letting everything mix and slightly distort along the way. I don’t like to create pastiches, but rather I prefer to mix up all these influences and present them in the same way that they are jumbled up in my memories; to create something new,

but clearly rooted in the past.

As 3D technology and hardware evolved, he saw an opportunity to explore CGI as a creative medium in itself with which he could subvert and twist familiar everyday things into new typographic and sculptural forms. Chris LaBrooy is interested in the intersection between typography, architecture, product design and visual art. Some clients he has worked for include

I don’t really have methods to keep my “creative juices” flowing. I’m inspired by lots of things. Words inspire me quite a bit. I will often develop concepts based on a combination of words. Phrases like “Pen Orchestra” or “Fancy Wood” help me to generate ideas that I can then start sketching and compositing into final works.

ESTABLISH

THROUGH TOP TIPS AND TRIC

YOUR TYPE KS FROM THE PROFESSIONALS

1 SPACE Spacing

is

Fundamental

TO MAKE UNITY

68

Inspiration for Type Creation

Varying type size is one of the best ways to

differentiate your content – there should be a specified size and weight for your heading, sub-heading and body copy – this creates visual hierarchy. Use a heavy typeface for your heading to amplify your focal message and as an extra touch you can close up the letter spacing, but ensure the words are still legible. Applying a subtle transparency to your type will soften the hard edges and strong unity formed by the tight letter spacing. Also, you can use a finer typeface for your supporting copy and space out the lettering for contrast.

Content Consistancy Ensure your design is harmonious by choosing

typefaces which are aesthetically aligned to your content. The typefaces you choose should represent both your content and your other elements within your design. For example, the use of a handwritten script for a product or design representing something ‘handmade’ or a typewriter font for vintage or press publication. Also, adding an element to the space between words is a dynamic way to add a little bit of finesse to your design to complete it.

Narrow BUT BOLD

70

Inspiration for Type Creation

Just like bold fonts, narrow and thin fonts work better for headings than they do for blocks of text. Combining two similar narrow typefaces with different letter spacing and weight will create a nice contrast.

Applying an element, like a line or stroke the same width as some of your text will both place emphasis on certain words and contain your type.

Overlay An image that you can apply text over is a

great way combine your graphic elements for a more stunning effect. Choose an image with features you can overlay type on, then adjust the brightness and contrast within your filter sliders to ensure your text is legible.

Sticking to one font family will create harmony within your design – break up content by using different styles eg. italic, bold. It’s also smart to use the rule of thirds to help define visual hierarchy.

Creative Characters

72

Inspiration for Type Creation

Express

Yourself

When you are faced with a semi-colon, or an

ampersand – take advantage of them. Many fonts provide a beautiful selection of glyphs (type characters or symbols). For example, Ampersands are an elegant typographic feature. Choose any typeface that celebrates this character like PlayFair Display. Place your content with purpose and keep an eye on your alignment, making sure your supporting type lines up with another element in your graphic.

6 Helvetica

Trends Always Change Gotham might be amazing, but it’s not right for

everything. It’s good to know what’s ‘in’ but try not

to rely too heavily on trends because using the latest typeface won’t make your work the ‘greatest’. Instead of simply surfing the net for new fonts, open a book, and research some tried and tested classics. Sans serif is contemporary, modern and clean, but a classic and dependable serif can be all those things too. The real magic happens when you find a pairing that brings the best out of each typeface.

7

Look For Other Inspiration

74

Inspiration for Type Creation

It is important to look for inspiration from

other places besides just other lettering artists. Perhaps look at sign painters, vintage packaging, tattoo artists, and graffiti. Figure out what inspires you besides type, and look at the design surrounding these fields. Maybe you’re interested in surfing and want to look at not just old surfboard company graphics, but surf town signage, tide charts and painted boat names.

Try Different Mediums Rather than just using a computer or pencil

to draw all types of letterforms, try using other tools like calligraphy pens, brush markers, paint brushes, charcoal, and chalk. Even try using bits of nature such as flowers, foods like condiments and spices, or even old junk laying around, anything you can form a letter with. Try working at different sizes, too. Using your arm to make marks creates a different feeling and gets different results than making small movements with a pencil between your fingers. Often, this is the key to creating new and unique letterforms.

CATEGORIES FOR FONTS in

Design

1 2

3

4

Serif

The serif category is defined by extra decorative marks or ‘legs’ on each letter. These embellish characters and make them easier to read in body text. Serifs Include Old Style, Transitional, Neoclassical and Didone, Slab, Clarendon and Glyphic.

Sans Serif

A Sans-serif typeface is one that does not have the small projecting features called “serifs” at the end of strokes. Used in the main texts for print output and web texts. Sans Serifs include Grotesque, square, Humanistic and Geometric.

Script

Script fonts have ornaments, curves and long tails and are calligraphic in nature to imitate handwriting. They are commonly used in wedding and other formal occasions. Scripts include Formal, Casual, Calligraphic, Blackletter and Lombardic.

Decorative

Decorative fonts are unique and thematic in nature and are often used for branding or for specific occassions. Some of the many Decorative fonts include Grunge, Psychedelic and Graffiti.

Bb

T ypefaces Common to Designers

T

here are a number of early choices you need to consider. Will it be a serif or sans serif ? Will it be based on a writing implement or be more geometric? Will your design be a text face, comfortable at small sizes and suitable for long documents, or will it be a display face with an imaginative style, that works better a larger size? On the following pages are a selection of pre-existing fonts well known to the design community. These will serve as a stepping stone to your own custom font through observation of similar characteristics and structure.

1

Akzidenz Grotesk

Akzidenz Grotesk, the first ever sans-serif typeface to be widely used, was originally released in 1898, by the H. Berthold AG type foundry. At first glance, it can sometimes be mistaken for the later Helvetica or Univers designs.

Avenir

2

The Avenir typeface was designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1988. The city of Amsterdam uses Avenir extensively in its graphic identity. The BBC2 TV channel has also begun to use Avenir as its main corporate font for its logo and identity, another shift away from the once universal use of Gill Sans across all of the BBC’s output.

3

Bodoni

Caslon is a family of serif typefaces designed by William Caslon (1692–1766). His earliest design dates to 1734. The Caslon types were distributed throughout the British Empire, including British North America. Caslon’s types were immediately successful and used in many historic documents, including the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

Bodoni is the name given to a series of serif typefaces first designed by Giambattista Bodoni in 1798. This typeface has a narrower underlying structure with flat, unbracketed serifs. The face has extreme contrast between thick and thin strokes, and an overall geometric construction.

Franklin Gothic Franklin Gothic was designed by Morris Fuller Benton, in 1902. “Gothic” is an increasingly archaic term (used widely in the past but quite rare today), meaning ‘sans-serif’, which is found primarily in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Caruso’s redrawing of Franklin Gothic consists of a slightly enlarged x-height and a moderately condensed lowercase alphabet.

84

Inspiration for Type Creation

6

Futura

Futura was designed in 1927 by Paul Renner. Although Renner was not associated with the Bauhaus movement, he shared many of its structural elements, and believed that a modern typeface should express modern models, rather than be a revival of a previous design. Futura’s success spawned a range of new geometric sansserif typefaces from competing foundries, and remains one of the most used sans-serif types into the 21st century.

85

7

Gill Sans

Gill Sans was designed by Eric Gill in 1927-30. Gill was a well established sculptor, graphic artist and type designer, and the Gill Sans typeface takes inspiration from Edward Johnston’s ‘Johnston’ typeface, used for the London Underground, which Gill had worked on whilst apprenticed to Johnston. Eric Gill attempted to make the ultimate legible sans-serif text face, and Gill Sans was designed to function equally well as both a text face and for display.

86

Inspiration for Type Creation

8

Helvetica

Helvetica was created by Miedinger with Eduard Hoffmann at the Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas type foundry) of Münchenstein, Switzerland. Haas set out to design a new sans-serif typeface that could compete with Akzidenz Grotesk in the Swiss market. Originally called Neue Haas Grotesk, the typeface’s name was changed in 1960 by Haas’ German parent company, Stempel, to Helvetica — derived from Confederatio Helvetica, Latin for Swiss Confederation — in order to make it more marketable internationally.

G Time

to Type

Bites of knowledge for your process

Repetition

Start with one letter and work from there. For

instance, you could take an uppercase R and draw from that your uppercase P. Repeating shapes and forms in letters brings a typeface together. Think of it as creating a series of interchangeable parts to be used as a core for your letters. Adding unique elements can come after you have the basic form set into place.

Options

Exhaust all the options before settling on just

Forming Change

one character design. For each typeface, create multiple variations of characters to see which works and looks the best in presentation. Sometimes the first iteration is the best, but evolving an idea to its end helps you find gems and combinations you might not have thought about.

Start forming words as you are designing the

typeface. Forming words helps designers make decisions between iterations and where things should be placed. The letterforms will very rarely be used in isolation, so why design them that way?

Don’t be afraid to change it. It may be a little

extra work, time, and effort but it is always worth it. You want to create something you are proud of, so cutting corners will only result in the “I wish I had…” or even more work later on if you decide to change it. Trust your design eye and senses. Inspiration for Type Creation

Lastly...

Do What You Love

P

ractise is key for success. Remember to practise everyday or as often as you can to develop your own style and preferences. Afterall, Professionals wouldn’t be where they are today without their many years of research, expertise and practise in typography design. On that same note, always remember to have fun with your design endeavours and don’t be afraid to try something new.

Once you’ve crafted something you’re happy with, you’ll start seeing how it performs at a range of tasks suited to the original briefs you assigned it. Always ask designers, friends or family to test it out and give you feedback. The more critique you can get, the better chances you have of improving and creating gorgeous and functional Typefaces and eye-popping Typography artworks.
