Research BRIEF: 3 x book jackets. They should all adhere to the provided template and include the copy text supplied. I read the books, and based on the briefs, these were my key thoughts: 1. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 - Be imaginative and have point of difference - Ensure children want to read this classic book - Appeal to broadest possible audience 2. To Kill A Mockingbird - Strong use of typography, including the beautiful writing - Appeal to a contemporary audience - Avoid obvious iconography 3. In Cold Blood - Bold, maybe shocking - True to the book - Original interpretation

Initial Ideas
In order to keep the designs orginal, I identified the key points of the texts, and quickly explored the varied imagery which came to mind. Through broad roughing I could develop a strong sense of the type of outcome I wanted to create, and what would and wouldn’t transfer onto books. I then roughed out my final designs to make directly onto the template.

Development
I experimented with different ways to visualise my roughs, as well as scanning in elements which I could use to construct my designs. I wanted to explore unusual textures within Adrian Mole to make it different to previous covers, including painted cut paper and wood. I feel this would appeal to a younger audience, especially with the reference to school related items. The main thing I wanted to show in To Kill a Mockingbird was the beautiful writing, so created the actual title out of the inside as an exclusive, modern peek. I decided on the theme of four gun shots and a cut for In Cold Blood, and developed very rough, elementary elements, which could have existed at the time the book was written.

Further Development
I found this stage very enjoyable, as I was able to play with different compositions quickly on screen. This way of working was incredibly beneficial to me, and I would like to work in this manner in the future. I also utilised saved textures for some parts, which reminded me of the importance of organising my work and time. Initially I wanted to create the To Kill A Mockingboard type out of the actual writing from the book, but it made it incredibly illegible, so I needed to rethink the concept. Also, I struggled to fit all of the elements onto one design, which taught me to be flexible with my designs and alter then when needed to reflect the purpose.

FINAL DESIGNS
The final mock ups, I feel, reflect my intent for the briefs and have pifferent points of interest. However, I feel like I could have pushed my development of In Cold Blood and To Kill A Mockingbird, as I had more to say about their content and could have further expressed this on the cover. I had to rush finilising my designs due to the approaching deadline, which is a lesson in time management and considering how much work I take on. Overall, I feel the Adrian Mole cover is most successful as the different textures and colours reflect well the intended young audience without being too childish and garish.

SMALL BRIEF: Papyrus
BRIEF: To create an adult colouring style visual representation of something which helps you feel calm and relaxed. It should be landscape A3 in 0.3mm fine liner pen. Creating a repetative but unique pattern through natural elements was an interesting and informative experience which taught me a lot about patience, as well as suitablility of the outcome to the brief.

By being loose and experimental with the process and outcome of these images I could really explore techniques and imagery I wouldn’t normally use. This approach taught me the importance of not settling on the forst idea, but pushing my creativity and experimenting with unusual compositions and imagery.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Rings of Saturn The Lemon Twigs - As Long As We’re Together
Let’s Eat Grandma - Deep Six Textbook
Krzysztof Komeda - Cul-De-Sac
By using many different processes I have created a varied set of outcomes. I used lino, mono and screen print, collage, pencil, gouachem cut paper and digital colour to make a fairly resolved set of outcomes. However, had I more time, I would have polished off the outcomes, such as working on the composition for the Krzysztof Komeda and the print quality for The Handsome Family
