I like the limited colour palettes of Louise Lockharts work, as well as the shape driven imagery in Kirkup’s. I wanted to make stand alone pieces which are strongly reliant on shape and colour to show a hidden cryptic message from the song.

Development
By listening to the songs and drawing as I did, I was able to establish varied roughs which reflected my personal response to the songs. Because I was fairly free with my work ethic during this process I was able to develop outcomes which I hadn’t originally thought of, but had grown through roughing and developing my ideas.

Development
By being loose and experimental with the process and outcome of these images I could really explore techniques and imagery I wouldn’t normally use. This approach taught me the importance of not settling on the first idea, but pushing my creativity and experimenting with unusual compositions and imagery. I also played around a lot with the difference between physically altering work and doing it digitally, and this project has taught me a lot about finding a balance between the traditional way I prefer to work, and the quicker, more realistic digital manner.
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
I enjoyed creating several potential outcomes and then deciding which one was my ‘final’ although some times I did over do this and end up with too many slightly different ones to pick through. I think my favourite part of this brief was how quick they could be, whilst still having a lot of meaning.

I was able to refine my ideas and images through proper timetabling, which meant I could even traditionally print two of the outcomes, The Lemon Twigs and The Handsome Family, and I was very pleased with how they turned out. However, near the end I began to run out of time, and my outcomes suffered as a result. I ended up creating some heavily digital outcomes which is not my style at all, but I think it was a good learning experience on how to push my boundaries and try new things.

Final Outcomes
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Rings of Saturn The Lemon Twigs - As Long As We’re Together
Let’s Eat Grandma - Deep Six Textbook
Krzysztof Komeda - Cul-De-Sac
By using many different processes I have created a varied set of outcomes. I used lino, mono and screen print, collage, pencil, gouache, cut paper and digital colour to make a fairly resolved set of outcomes. However, had I more time, I would have polished off the outcomes, such as working on the composition for the Krzysztof Komeda, the texture effect of Let’s Eat Grandma and the print quality for The Handsome Family.
