SEPTEMBER I was extremely apprehensive to start this module, as I had always pictured the dissertation as such a huge module. However, after really enjoying both the packaging I worked on within CoP1 and 505, I decided that I wanted to undertake a subject I would really enjoy researching. As I am passionate about sustainability and colour, I also wanted to include these aspects. I feel that by picking varied starting points which I’m really vehement about, I felt more excited to undertake the work. Over the holidays, I have done extensive research both into past dissertations and my subject areas. This has taught me a great deal about how to form academic texts, and given me a good idea of what I should be aiming for. I have also learnt a lot about effective research techniques and how to organise quotes etc. into usable information which is easy to refer back to.
The aspect which has been most successful so far is my research, as I was able to compile a strong basis for further exploration and essay planning. I feel that I have been able to collect a lot of different views and contrasting evidence, which will be invaluable when it comes to the structuring of my essay. I also feel that I have a good working proposal ‘To what extent does colour influence the visual appeal of packaging, and how does this reflect its sustainability?’. The main thing I have struggled with so far is motivation and time management, as once I have settled down to work I get a lot done, but I’m finding it difficult to fit this alongside my work and personal commitments. I feel that once I have settled down into term time again I will be a lot more motivated. I also have struggled to pin down the exact concept I want to pursue, which is something I will need to seek help from my peers and tutor.
‘Now the package must do its own selling job, and for that reason a great deal more interest must be taken in proper packaging of merchandise’ -Humphery, 1998 p.87
Over the next couple of months, I would like to really progress with the content and structure of my essay. I would also like to really embrace this opportunity to learn as much about sustainability through engaging with visits and actual sustainable acts. I would really like the practical work of this project to be personal, and show my vehemence towards the environment. I will also need to ensure I use the same timetabling techniques I found helpful throughout second year to ensure I spread my work out effectively.
