WAS HI N G T O N , D . C .

Washington D.C., or formally the District of Columbia, is our nation’s capitol. It is located on the Eat coast along the Potomac River. The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.

The city acts as the heart and center of

our county. It strongly represents connectivity as well as strength and stablitity in a diverse nation.

D D E V E LO P M E N T I began with researching the city in detail, including it’s purpose, contents, history, etc. While focusing on words that related to the significance of the location, I found fonts to emphasize attributes of the city as a whole. Through exploration and designs and playing with arrangements of the letters both on paper and digitally, I decided on one and continued to refine it.

LETTERMARK

This logo was designed to capture the idea of connectivity of Washington D.C. to the rest of the United Stated. The first two letters “D” and “C” are intertwined to draw attention to the name while the “a” represents everyone else as a connected element. The letters are all one unit to show the strong connection. Overall, the letters combine to form a sturdy and stable form just like how the city forms the heart of our country.

T Y P E FAC E I chose Garamond as a companion typeface. It is a serif typeface that is clear and compact for print, making it an easy read and a great contrast with my sans serif logo. In addition,Garamond was used mostly for books in history so being the capitol, it is easily recognizable as a historicial font. The typeface itself is quick to understand since it is so clear and provides great contrast. This supporting type truely captures the connectivity of

Washington, D.C. and the rest of the U.S. that includes contrasting cultures throughtout.

PRIMARY—MEMORIAL BLUE

C O LO R S My color scheme consists of dark blue, teal and a pop of orange. I chose these colors to emphasize the presidential and American attributes of D.C., while changing it to a more modern, warm tone. Memorial Blue and Modern Orange are a spin off of the traditional American colors, red and blue, while Potomac Green offers a secondary to the blue. In addition these colors give off a nautical vibe, which matches the city’s proximity to the ocean and the Potomac river which separates Washington D.C. from the surrounding suburbs. These colors embody determining characteristics of the city, that it is the nation’s capitol, it’s close to bodies of water and it the warm center of our nation. SECONDARY—POTOMAC GREEN, MODERN ORANGE
