We take deep pride and are profoundly grateful to be able to share with you GlobeMed at CU-Boulder’s accomplishments over the past year. In broad strokes, they include raising over $20,000 for our partner organization in Nepal, sending 6 students to work alongside our partner, attracting top global health experts to speak to our community, and helping to educate the next generation of leaders in global health. Perhaps even more exciting than these quantifiable measures of our achievements, however, is the transformation that can be seen within our own organization. In this critical year of transition, we have grown dramatically, greatly extending our impact. What you might not see in these pages is the team of 50 dedicated staff members whose work underlies our success. As a team, we are continually evaluating the work we do and documenting and disseminating what we have learned in order to grow in all the right ways as an effective and efficient student-run nonprofit. GlobeMed at CU-Boulder prides itself on turning good intentions into effective action and has become an organization that produces individuals who display an uncommon mix of idealism, vision, effective leadership, and practical engagement in the pursuit of social justice and global health equity. We humbly recognize that we are only able to fulfill our mission thanks to the many supporters we have found over the short span of two years who share our ambitious vision of an equitable world. Together we must continue to advocate in the broadest sense for higher standards in global health, making the needs of people and communities suffering from the burdens of poverty and disease our top priority.

Many thanks, Rosalind Dillon and Taylor Roberts 2010-2011 Co-Presidents

ABOUT US
GlobeMed at CU-Boulder In 2009 a group of four students founded the GlobeMed chapter at the University of Colorado at Boulder, turning a vision into a highly effective organization dedicated to creating a more equitable world. Since the founding, a relationship with Himalayan HealthCare in Jawalakhel, Nepal has blossomed into a strong partnership valued and respected equally by both parties. GlobeMed at CU has visited HHC on 4 G.R.O.W internships, currently has 51 dedicated chapter members and has raised over $40,000 in a span of just 2 years to support various projects of HHC.
since our founding in August 2009 , our chapter has grown from to members.

HIMALYAN HEALTHCARE [WORKS IN JAWALAKHEL, NEPAL] POPULATION: 35,000,000
KEY FACT: Average life expectancy: Male-64 Female-67 KEY FACT: Malnutrition is the underlying cause of at least 50% of child deaths in Nepal.
HHC operates in the most remote regions of Nepal, working with some of the poorest people in the world living on less than one dollar per day. The government of Nepal provides little health care support for its people, especially those living in isolated areas. With such disparity in health care, HHC began its work in Tipling, a small village no less than a threeday trek to the nearest hospital. In Tipling, HHC established its first health post to attend to the basic medical needs of the villagers. HHC has since grown to construct a hospital in the Ilam District of Nepal and support multiple projects focusing on women's empowerment, nutrition, education, and income generation in other villages throughout Nepal.
[About Himalyan Healthcare] FOUNDED IN 1992 Himalayan HealthCare (HHC) is a grassroots nongovernmental organization (NGO) that provides primary health care, community education, and income generation to people living in secluded and impoverished regions of Nepal. The mission of Himalayan HealthCare is to create sustainable development programs in the remote areas of Nepal that will improve the quality of life for its people. HHC has been operating for over 18 years as a registered NGO within Nepal and has a board and 501(c)(3) status in the U.S. as well. GlobeMed at CU Boulder partnered with HHC in 2009.

[Why hygiene and sanitation?] In the remote regions of Nepal where HHC operates, education on the importance of hand washing, oral hygiene, and sanitary cooking habits is uncommon. To combat diarrheal and other diseases, health and sanitation must become a main focus.

EVENTS Defeating disparities in global health is in the hands of young people around the world. In order to continue recent efforts to eliminate malnutrition, disease, and abuse, it is critical that young people understand these issues. GlobalhealthU at CU-Boulder focuses on educating not only chapter members, but the entire community surrounding Boulder so that others may join this movement. Hosting public speakers such as Dr. Joia Mukherjee, the Chief Medical Director at Partners in Health, Anil Parajuli, founder of HHC, Heidi Wirtz, founder of Girls Education International, and Dr. Daniel Wessner, Director of the University of Denver's Masters in Development Practice (MDP) program, allowed the chapter to educate the Denver/Boulder communities about injustice around the world. While pursuing an education regarding pressing social issues and the practices of other organizations internally, GlobeMed at CU-Boulder sought to question the actions that are taken in order to highlight the consequences and benefits of proposed interventions. Approaching possible solutions in this way provides the best framework for understanding what needs to be done to improve the future of global health. Understanding topics with such depth will allow the CU-Boulder chapter to better evaluate and support projects in the future.

COMMUNITY BUILDING Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
51 # OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS: 5+ TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS:
Staff dynamic is an integral part of GlobeMed at CUBoulder. It is this organization's belief and experience that a well-connected staff works more efficiently than a group of mere acquaintances. Through community building activities, a safe environment where all opinions are listened to and respected is fostered. Some of these activities included two staff retreats, where attendees learned about differing opinions in public health and created chapter learning goals; a handful of non-business gatherings including a Thanksgiving potluck and a picnic; and many different meeting-based activities, where staff goofed around, intimately shared feelings, and debated opinions. Through alternating activities between GlobeMed-based learning goals and family-style sharing, GlobeMed at CU-Boulder has created a close-knit group of individuals who share similar values and can easily adapt and grow.
[GRASSROOTS ON-SITE WORK] Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students make a positive impact in the community by working alongside their partner organization to further ongoing and new projects.
DECEMBER 2010 – JANUARY 2011
"My GROW trip to Nepal allowed me to fully grasp why we, GlobeMed and Himalayan HealthCare, work so hard. What we strive for is more than just a change. It’s a commitment to the world, and a commitment to humanity. I am forever tied to this movement." -- Navodita KC, c/o 2011
03 LENGTH OF STAY: 4 weeks # OF GLOBEMED GROW INTERNS:
WORK DESCRIPTION: Three G.R.O.W. interns spent four weeks in Nepal working and observing at Himalayan HealthCare’s office in Kathmandu and their community hospital in Ilam. In Kathmandu, the GROW members were able to communicate with HHC staff about how GlobeMed can better support their projects and while in Ilam they observed the hospital operations to provide feedback about potential improvements in health care delivery. The winter trip provided a great opportunity for the interns to interact and strengthen relationships with HHC staff and see first-hand how much the work we do in Boulder impacts an organization half a world away.

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
GLOBEMED AT CU-BOULDER joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. OUR QUESTION: What does women's empowerment mean to you?
What does women's empowerment mean to you?
BEHIND THE SCENES: [GlobeMed at CU-Boulder decided to focus on the issue of women's empowerment because of the impact that women can have on the rural villages in Nepal and throughout the world. Many women in the villages where HHC works participate in a women's empowerment program to prevent alcoholism and domestic abuse from their husbands. Forming a women's group allows them to uphold anti-liquor laws and offer support for one another if domestic violence is present in the household. The ultimate goal was not only to spread the word about daily abuse rural Nepali women face but, more importantly, to show that women around the world are often the key to defeating poverty. Focusing on the impactful videos of thegirleffect.org allowed people who had not been previously exposed to women's empowerment to see the positive influence a woman can have on her entire family.
WE ASKED OVER 38 PEOPLE AT CU-BOULDER.
HERE’S HOW THEY RESPONDED >>

2011 DELEGATES: Ashley Armstrong, Sarah Budisavljevic, Rosalind Dillon, Navodita K.C., Makenzie Lewis, Scott Mahlberg, Gabriela Nagy, Julianne Surfus, Melissa Taylor, Sarah Ha, Jillian Warner
"Summit was a life-changing moment in my life. From the solidarity for global health equity, I felt like I truly belonged during the whole conference. I realized that I am able to take action within such a movement without having any academic qualifications. Summit has increased my knowledge and passion for global health equity and it has helped motivate me to take a more integral role within my own chapter.

DR. JOIA MUKHERJEE Chief Medical Officer, Partners in Health
"GlobeMed gave me a network of individuals as passionate about public health and development as I am. It gave me the knowledge to make a difference. Most importantly, it allowed me to travel and see these disparities with my own eyes. GlobeMed changed my college experience. I love my GlobeMed family!“ – Gaby Nagy, c/o 2011 The goals for GlobeMed at CU-Boulder during the 20112012 school year are bold, yet attainable with the right group of individuals and level of efficiency. Without setting high goals it would not be possible to continue to grow exponentially while benefiting the people of Nepal.
2010 – 2011 Annual Report
OUR FUTURE
Financially, the chapter intends to raise funds accumulating to a total of no less than $25,000 for Himalayan HealthCare sponsored projects. In order to promote this growth, improvements will continue to be made to several aspects of the organization, including the Campaign Council so that fundraisers may be as productive as possible. Collaboration between all campaigns, Executive Board members, and the Community Advisory Board (CAB) will ensure the effectiveness of the Campaign Council. Utilizing the GlobeMed at CU-Boulder CAB for additional advice will allow the chapter to see where it can go and what steps are needed to obtain the 2011-2012 goals. To create a larger presence within the Boulder/Denver area, building more diverse partnerships in the greater Boulder community will become a greater focus. Currently, GlobeMed at CU-Boulder is in the process of finding a local partner with which to collaborate, hopefully to the benefit respective organizational goals. Another area of focus will be co-sponsoring events, which will allow for a more financially pragmatic approach and a wider audience for the movement for global health equity. Finally, plans to launch a website this coming year dedicated to GlobeMed at CU-Boulder are underway. This will give the organization greater transparency and keep everyone updated about future events. Stay in touch this coming year to hear about all activities including a human rights fair in the spring of 2012!
