Friends of GlobeMed at IU:! ! It has been both an honor and privilege for us to serve as GlobeMed at IU’s first set of Co-Presidents. What started as a new student organization in August, 2010 with one founding member has now transformed into a 28-member strong force committed to global health equity and social justice.! ! As a reflection of our founding year, this report details many events and achievements including: raising $2,000 for our partner community in Cajabamba, Ecuador, holding 20 globalhealthU sessions to discuss and attempt to understand the vast underpinnings of health inequities, sending four students to the 2011 Global Health Summit to learn from experts in the field, and raising awareness about social justice issues pertinent to our partner community and to impoverished communities around the world.! ! Although the descriptions and numbers behind our achievements give meaning and context to outsiders, they do little justice to the community and camaraderie that has become synonymous with our efforts on campus. It is through this supportive culture in which all parties work in pragmatic solidarity that we hope to not only develop GlobeMed further on campus, but also the visionary students who will lead this organization and the movement for global health equity in the years to come. ! ! Our collective vision at GlobeMed at IU, however, can only be realized with your support. We look forward to our future interactions as we work together to build a more equitable, just and healthier world.! ! In solidarity,! Mohsin Mukhtar and Hidemi DeHays! Co-Presidents, 2010-2011!

ABOUT US
GlobeMed at Indiana University  GlobeMed at IU was founded August, 2010 with one member who identified with GlobeMed's mission and saw the positive impact its partnership model had had in so many partner communities at existing GlobeMed chapters across the nation. ! After the initial founding process on campus and securing the executive board and staff members who equally believed in the cause for global health equity and social justice, GlobeMed was in action. With each bake and pizza sale, with the commemoration of World AIDS Day and World Day of Social Justice, with the celebration of diversity in music through Harmonies for Health and through globalhealthU discussions and chapter get-togethers, GlobeMed at IU not only raised $2,000 and researched and funded sexual health educational materials to be used by community health workers in CEMOPLAF Cajabamba's surrounding 21 communities and raised awareness about social justice issues on campus, it created a new, dynamic 28-member student movement at IU, in which anyone who had an interest in global health equity or social justice was more than welcomed to come and share their thoughts and ideas and work together, in pragmatic solidarity, to create change for the better. ! By leveraging this strong momentum, in the coming year, GlobeMed at IU plans to take the next step by going on a GROW trip to learn about and tackle, first hand, the issues facing our partner community.!
since our founding in August 2010 Â , our chapter has grown from to members.

CEMOPLAF-CAJABAMBA Â [WORKS IN CAJABAMBA, ECUADOR] POPULATION: 3,000
KEY FACT: Approximately 30 % of the population, mostly poor and indigenous, has no access to even the most basic health care.! KEY FACT: A lack of sexual health education and contraceptive use among adolescents contributes to nearly one in ten adolescents giving birth each year.!
Cajabamba is a rural mountain city in central Ecuador. With! challenging roads and poor infrastructure, Cajabamba lacks access to many of the basic resources that the rest of the country possesses. Language barriers between indigenous and Spanish-speaking Ecuadorians create a barrier to accessing these resources, as does the fact that many people living here leave school to work by the fifth grade. Literacy is low, particularly among women, and machismo and customary restrictions on the movement and activity of women further limits their access to resources, while condoning many forms of sexual and domestic violence against women.!
[About CEMOPLAF-Cajabamba] FOUNDED IN 1974 CEMOPLAF Cajabamba's work is primarily focused on three goals of increasing sexual and reproductive health knowledge, access to contraceptive methods, and communication skills among adolescents in 21 communities. It meets these goals through peer educator talks in both formal and informal settings, group activities, and distribution of contraceptive methods. By providing adolescents with these resources, it hopes to empower the community over time as these young adults will stay in school longer, find better jobs, and learn the skills necessary to make more responsible decisions. Overall, it provides a wide array of sexual health services, including but not limited to: medical clinics, community distribution posts, family planning services, and general and pediatric consultations. Its partnership with GlobeMed at IU started in August, 2010, and it is currently working with them on a variety of projects related to fertility awareness, sexuality education, and HIV prevention in 21 communities. !

[Why sexual ! health education?]! In our discussions with Sra. Lourdes, our contact at CEMOPLAF Cajabamba, she explained the extent to which women of the region were! subject to the collateral consequences of rigid gender roles and culturally institutionalized gender inequality. The rates of sexual assault, rape, and domestic violence were high in the region, especially among indigenous women, and the access to legal remedies for such violence is limited in Ecuador, particularly for a woman! without Spanish-language education, legal funds, and access to transportation.!

OUR PROJECT
Our goal was to produce Spanish-language documents educating CEMOPLAF’s clients on sexual and domestic violence.! !
We conducted a series of mini research projects, delegated to! individuals in our globalhealthU team. One group looked specifically at issues of sexual violence and its prevention, another at domestic violence and its prevention, a third at nongovernmental organizations working on this issues in our region and internationally, and a fourth at the intersections of gender and FOR THE PRINTING, sexual violence with the religious, cultural, and political issues in Ecuador. Compiling this research together, we then assembled SHIPPING AND teams to work on individual pamphlets addressing these issues, DISTRIBUTION OF 1000 marketed towards different audiences. Finally, we worked to SEXUAL AND translate these pamphlets into Spanish, receiving help on editing REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH and proofreading from native speakers and professors.!

07 TOPICS! As this was our chapter's founding year, the role of globalhealthU was two-pronged: ! ! 1. On the one hand, we strove to facilitate the chapter's self-education on issues of global health broadly, and intersections of health with gender, conflict, economics, and religion. ! ! 2. On the other hand, we worked to apply that knowledge directly to understanding issues our global health partner in Cajabamba, Ecuador-CEMOPLAF--was facing on the ground. ! ! This culminated in one of our projects with our partner, creating pamphlets on prevention sexual and domestic violence in the context of rural Ecuador.!

Global Health Roundtable APRIL 28, 2011 Twenty-five students joined together in a conversation and reflection with attendees of the annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit of 2011. Student presenters first described the content of the panels and talks they had attended. The discussion then opened up into a broader brainstorming session about critical issues in global health, ranging from the tension between traditional cultural practices and contemporary health science, to the intersection of these broader issues with our practical concerns in our work with CEMOPLAF Cajabamba.!

As a new chapter with a constantly-changing membership base, one of Globemed at IU’s biggest challenges this year was to build a cohesive chapter. To address this issue, Community Building’s focus was to create strong bonds between chapter members. Of our five events, four were at least partially social in nature, with good food and good fun. As a result, Globemed IU ended the year with a group of 28 members that consistently contributed to chapter events. Looking forward, we would like to put more effort into community service, especially in terms of a long-term partnership with a local organization.!
WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
What is the most important social injustice challenging the world today?
GLOBEMED AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. ! ! ! OUR QUESTION: What is the most important social injustice challenging the world today?! ! ! BEHIND THE SCENES: [We wanted to challenge our fellow students to think on broad spectrum of social issues rather than focusing solely on our nation's problems. Too often we get caught up in thinking our problems are only our own, when in reality much of the world experiences the same issues, often to a greater degree. We were hoping to get some high-profile community and campus leaders in on our project, but did not factor in their busy lifestyles accurately enough. In the future, we'll plan ahead better. ! ! ! ! !

DR. JOIA MUKHERJEE! Chief Medical Officer, ! Partners in Health!
“GlobeMed offered something unique: tools to problem solve via sustainable and manageable projects. These tools are empowering in a group of individuals whose personalities are matchless and have showed me the good in the world. Global health/social justice is about just that – recognizing the good in the midst of crisis.” – Hidemi DeHays, c/o 2011!

OUR FUTURE
Because our chapter at Indiana University is fairly new ! to the GlobeMed community, our goal for summer 2011 is solidifying our chapter’s foundation. This includes transitioning the executive board, finalizing a timeline for our upcoming campaigns, and planning initial chapter bonding events for the year. ! ! Last year, we learned the basics of GlobeMed and were minimally involved in the community. This year, our biggest challenges will be broadcasting GlobeMed at IU’s name, volunteering and reaching out to our community, and combining forces with other chapters to create a stronger bond between the GlobeMed network.! ! Plans for promoting GlobeMed include a football tournament to “tackle global health” and dine ‘n donates with local restaurants. We hope to involve the community by encouraging businesses to donate items for our annual campaigns such as Harmonies for Health, or simply attending to show their support. Also, we plan on partnering with other local organizations to help give back to those in need and provide a framework for GlobeMed at IU to think globally and act locally. Members that attended the summit agreed that network bonding is needed. Because we are itching to get to know the rest of the chapters, we plan on meeting with chapters in the area to exchange ideas, get advice, and to get to know each other.! ! None of this can happen without financial support, so our chapter has set up a Razoo account online. To donate to our chapter and primarily help fund our trip to Cajabamba, Ecuador to teach sexual and reproductive health, simply enter GlobeMed at IU in the search bar at razoo.com.!
