Dear Members and Friends of GlobeMed at Loyola,! ! Wow, how does one even begin describing the amazing journey that has been the school year of 2010-2011?! ! GlobeMed at Loyola has gone through so much this year, both good and bad. Our chapter, this year, has exceeded all expectations as it made leaps in the fields of campaigns, community building, and education. Financially, our chapter has more than quadrupled its annual revenue as it raised over thirteen thousand dollars. This year, we continued our amazing campaigns including our second annual Global GetDown and weekly bagel sales. Also, this year paved the way for new campaigns that will become lasting traditions such as our Global Marketplace Rummage Sale, Benefit Dinner, and Art Auction. None of this could have been possible without the dynamic support and perseverance of our chapter’s executive board whose possibilities and potential to achieve seem endless. Along with our board, our general body is also to thank for their countless hours of dedication and service to our partner. ! ! While we reminisce about the past, it is important that we look towards the future as our chapter continues to develop and grow. We look forward to everything the upcoming school year has in store for us. GlobeMed’s 2nd Annual Global GetDown, a variety show, showcased performing groups that competed for votes. Groups included YouTube sensation Manny Garcia, spoken word, tap dance, and breakdancing. !
Featuring art work from students at Loyola, we were able to discuss our work to parents, students, and professors. There were also posters present that included information about our projects and pictures from past on-site trips.!
ABOUT US
GlobeMed at Loyola University  Marko Mamic and Sarah Bokan founded GlobeMed at Loyola in the fall of 2008 after being moved to fight for health equity and social justice. ! ! 3 years later, our chapter has impacted the lives of 3,000 people in the community of La Primavera in Guatemala. We have raised over $20,000 and are extending our alumni network exponentially. ! ! We have succeeded in organizing 45 members in this last year that are dedicated to fighting injustices in health care in La Primavera and in other communities around the world. !

KEY FACT: ! The Guatemalan government promised to supply the clinic with medicine monthly. In reality, it's infrequent.!
The community of La Primavera was established during the Guatemalan Civil War from 1960 to 1996. Persecuted by the Guatemalan government, several communities went into hiding in the jungle and together formed the community that we know as La Primavera. Today, our community is made up of over 1,500 people, all Mayans. The leaders, the CCPI, and the community health workers are extremely motivated to improve the health of the community, despite the fact that the Guatemalan government does little to fulfill their constitutional responsibility to provide healthcare to all citizens.! !

[About La Primavera] FOUNDED IN 1983 The CCPI (Consejo Coordinator de Primavera de Ixcan) is a group of five individuals selected by a democratic General Assembly to serve and lead the community of La Primavera. The CCPI oversees development projects in La Primavera, including for healthcare. Their mission: direct the life of the community. GlobeMed at Loyola began partnering with the CCPI in the fall 2008. Their health projects include community health workers' salaries and an herbal medicine garden.!

[Why community health?]! Community-based care is an under-used and undervalued resource for overcoming barriers to healthcare delivery, especially in rural areas where not everyone can make it to clinics staffing trained medical professionals.!

OUR PROJECT
GlobeMed at Loyola raises $2,000 to support half the salaries of five community health workers.! ! GlobeMed at Loyola supports salaries of 5 community health workers to ensure La Primavera’s health clinic is open full-time. Not formally trained, the community health workers struggle with recognition from the government and adequate funding to maintain the costs of the clinic and needs of the community. A yearly salary for CHWs allows the clinic to be fully staffed, ensuring proper health care services to the 1,500 people of La Primavera and thousands of people in the surrounding communities. The project will be measured by the status of the clinic: it should always be open and available throughout the year (Monday through Saturday and on Sundays for emergencies only). !

[Why herbal medicine?]! Plants have been used as a source of medicine by Mayans for centuries. Even today medicinal plants remain an important treatment method, as modern medicine is still not easily obtainable by many rural Mayan communities due to economic and geographical constraints. Plants are used to treat a wide variety of illnesses, ranging from everyday ailments such as stomach pain and diarrhea, to more serious conditions like shock and sepsis. !

$8092 TO FUND THE SALARIES OF PROJECT COORDINATORS, MATERIALS FOR TEACHING THE USE OF HERBAL MEDICINES, AND A LABORATORY FOR PROCESSING THE MEDICINES
GlobeMed at Loyola raises $8,092 to support the building of an herbal medicine garden.! ! GlobeMed at Loyola will be supporting the completion of Phase II and the beginning of Phase III of the herbal medicine garden. The intended project impact is to reduce the incidence and severity of common illnesses. This is done by providing workshops to 50 women on how to use medicinal plants, to be shared among other community members. ! ! The medicinal plant garden will also promote the use of traditional plant knowledge while reducing the need for donated medicines. The project can be measured by decreased incidence of illnesses treated by medicinal plants. At the end of Phase III, an annual report will be provided with the number of plants grown and patients treated with plants. !

[Why environmental health?]!
La Primavera is a community that lives from and greatly respects their environment. Through this Environmental Festival, school-age children learn about how to protect the health of their environment, which in turn benefits the health of the population.!

OUR PROJECT
GlobeMed at Loyola raises $373 for La Primavera's annual Environmental Festival. ! ! The annual Environmental Festival is a community-wide event that celebrates the environment. Held on June 23rd, the Festival is both fun and educational. The youth of the community are encouraged to put together plays, music, and works of art that are focused on the environment. The goal of this project different natural resources present in the community and to raise awareness among residents of the community to protect and conserve the environment. This project can be measured by the level of participation among the youth of the community. Additionally, qualitative reports of the level of garbage present in the community can be used as an indicator of the success of the festival’s educational component. !

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR Global Getdown April 2, 2011 Our second annual Global GetDown featured several groups including local YouTube star Manny Garcia, spoken word, and a tap dance performed by our globalhealthU coordinator—Renee Kreidl! This event was a great way to showcase our projects to friends, family, and the Loyola community. Gerald Guevarra, Campaign Coordinator during the Global GetDown said, “I personally could not have been more impressed by how everyone in Globemed and the Loyola community came together for something that they believed was worth while.”.!

ON – CAMPUS EVENTS "Voice of a Mountain" Documentary Showing about the Guatemalan Civil War October 28th, 2010
This was a documentary on the history of Guatemala as well as its aftereffects, particularly on the indigenous population. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness about human rights violations in Guatemala, their need for support, and the importance of GlobeMed's work in partnering with La Primavera del Ixcan. There were about 25 attendees, and GlobeMed members spoke to the audience after the film about our projects.!
¡Salud! Cuban Healthcare Documentary Showing March 29th, 2011 GlobeMed at Loyola showed ¡Salud!, looking at the curious case of Cuba, a cashstrapped country with one of the world’s best health systems. Our documentary showing explored the hearts and minds of international medical students in Cuba -now numbering 30,000, including nearly 100 from the USA. Their stories plus testimony from experts around the world bring home the competing agendas that mark the battle for global health. There were about 40 university students attending..!

COMMUNITY BUILDING Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities. !

Through retreats, service, and other recreational activities, the gap between members was bridged as we became one cohesive unit. Retreats allowed many board and staff members to meet each other while actively engaging in a scavenger hunt across the city of Chicago! During the blizzard of 2011, aptly named “Snow-Pocalypse,� a great number of us built a snow fort and waited four hours for a pizza. Through service activities in soup kitchens and for other organizations, a common goal united our members as they worked together to achieve that goal and formed strong bonds in the process!!

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students make a positive impact in the community by working alongside their partner organization to further ongoing and new projects.!

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
What is social justice?
WE ASKED OVER 50 PEOPLE
GLOBEMED AT LOYOLA UNIVERSITY joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. ! ! OUR QUESTION: What is social justice?! ! BEHIND THE SCENES: We chose a very broad and open question to allow for a variety of responses. Loyola University is dedicated to social justice so hoped this topic would appeal to many different people. GlobeMed at Loyola hoped to encourage discussion about social justice and it’s interdisciplinary nature. We asked people to write their answers on a nametag. Answers ranged from topics like HIV/AIDS to homelessness. This event proved to provoke students and staff to think critically about human rights and what this meaning of social justice means to them. ! ! MORE WDSJ ACTION -----------------------------------! ! Spreading Awareness of WDSJ to Chicago!: GlobeMedders made a 15-feet long banner stating “humanity: the only real nation”—an alteration of Paul Farmer’s quote—and walked around Chicago with it. We asked Chicagoans to take pictures with us and told them about WDSJ and GlobeMed’s mission. ! ! ! AT LOYOLA UNIVERSITY. !

Summer 2011 has been impacting and influential for our chapter. After deep discussion and consideration, we have decided to re-partner, but keep La Primavera in our hearts forever. ! The upcoming year is exciting for everyone as we welcome back many familiar faces and start working with, potentially, a new partner. Some things are new, but others are not. These include our 3rd Annual Global Getdown, and the return of other beloved campaigns including our Chicago-land Benefit Dinner, Global Marketplace Rummage Sale, and Art Auction. Some new campaigns include a film-showing of Water, a powerful movie that provides insight into the gender inequalities and social stigmas of rural India. This year will bring many collaborations, allies, and partners on our journey to fight social injustice and establish global health equity. Along with these events, community building will continue as our veteran members welcome new ones and we form bonds of solidarity and a common goal through retreats, gettogethers, and other social gatherings. Our chapter also plans to increase its fame around the Loyola community. Already regarded as Loyola’s umbrella organization for social justice, our chapter will continue to help other organizations, engage in service trips to soup kitchens and other charities, and spread education of social justice and global health issues across the Loyola campus and community. ! As far as 2015, not even the sky is the limit for this chapter which has shown unprecedented amounts of growth and development during its lifetime. Basically, nobody knows what the future holds for GlobeMed at Loyola, but through our core beliefs of pragmatic solidarity and social justice, our chapter can accomplish anything!!
