Introduction Overview
THIS TRACK INTRODUCTION TRACK Goal: Provide chapter members a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of GlobeMed.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND LESSON PLANS Check out inside.globemed.org for this Track’s weekly lesson plans and resources!
Previously, the globalhealthU curriculum immediately began with intensive learning about specific topics within the field of global health. In contrast, we will begin ghU this year with an Introduction Track. Over a six-week period, we will learn about the fundamentals of GlobeMed. We hope to accomplish two distinct goals in doing so. First, we hope that chapter members will gain a strong understanding of what exactly GlobeMed is. This covers a broad range of topics, from learning the history of GlobeMed to meeting our partners to exploring our mission statement to discussing our role in the movement for global health. Providing this knowledge base will strongly benefit new chapter members, who likely do not yet have a thorough understand of the GlobeMed network. Even those who have participated in GlobeMed for longer often did not receive formal explanations of many of these topics, and will find the content to be, at the very least, a good refresher. Second, we hope to create a more open forum for discussion within chapters. To engage in discernment, people must feel comfortable within the environment and trust their peers. Taking time at the beginning of the year to learn about each other and create meaningful conversation will provide the communal foundation needed for more challenging, future discussions.

This track is loosely divided into two main sections. The first part of the introduction section focuses on information sharing, as we learn about GlobeMed and global health. This knowledge will be important for the second part of the introduction, which centers on philosophical frameworks and personal reflection. Since the new curriculum emphasizes leadership training and discernment, these philosophical frameworks will help chapters grasp what it truly means to be a member of GlobeMed.

GLOBEMED’S GLOBAL HEALTH EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CURRICULUM
globalhealthU General Timeline of Introduction ✦ Week 1: Chapters will first learn about the new globalhealthU model and curriculum.
The chapters will then learn about the history and evolution of GlobeMed, which informs an understanding the current model. ✦ Week 2: Chapters will learn about the whole GlobeMed network and all of its various components. This week reinforces that we are not just part of a club, but rather a student-run non-profit which is itself part of a larger movement for global health equity. ✦ Week 3: ghU coordinators will give a Global Health 101 lesson in order to provide chapter members with foundational information and give context for the work GlobeMed does. ✦ Week 4: The chapter will learn about their partner organization, their work, and a history of their partner’s country. ✦ Week 5: The chapter will engage in an in-depth discussion of philosophical frameworks and important terminology that relates to both GlobeMed and global health. ✦ Week 6: The chapter will further explore the idea of Partnership Theory and begin to engage in personal discernment, exploring who we are as GlobeMedders and what we truly believe.
In addition to the specific content, each week’s discussion will also be framed around a section of GlobeMed’s mission statement. Our mission statement is: GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of the impoverished around the world. This clearly is a complicated sentence, and aspects of it are difficult to understand. By focusing on one component of the mission every week, chapters will be able to familiarize themselves with the different portions. By the end of the introduction, the chapters should be prepared to have a full discussion of the mission statement and what it means for the GlobeMed model. Every week, the ghU coordinators should remind the chapter members which section of the mission statement is being addressed. Here are the six weeks, demarcated by their content and section of the mission statement addressed. ✦ Week 1: “students and communities working together” (Evolution of GlobeMed, Overview of ghu) ✦ Week 2: “strengthen the movement”(Meet the Network) ✦ Week 3: “global health equity”
/ “the health of the impoverished” (Global Health 101)
✦ Week 4: “empowering students and communities to work together” (Meet the Partner) ✦ Week 5: what do we mean by “the movement for global health equity” (Key Terms and Philosophical
Framework) ✦ Week 6: “empowering students” (Partnership Theory and Personal Discernment)
As we mentioned earlier, the last two weeks of the introduction track focus heavily on complex philosophies, such as ‘pragmatic solidarity’ and ‘health as a human right’. We encourage you to use these terms, when applicable, throughout the beginning weeks of the introduction; this will help chapter members have a more

globalhealthU general understanding of what the terms look like in application. By providing an implicit understanding of terminology, we hope that chapters will be able to have a more thorough investigation of their meanings during week 5 of this track. This was meant to provide a general overview of the introduction section. For further detail, please look at the breakdowns for each week, also located on inside.globemed.org. There, you will find a more detailed description of the week, content and materials to use, and suggested activities.
