Hello from GlobeMed at Penn State!! ! As we come out of our 6th year and move into our 7th, we are all too excited about what we’ve accomplished and our potential for the following years. This past year, we raised the bar - we pushed to engage more community members in our movement, become closer with our partner, and raise more money for our projects. With a highly successful 4th annual Global Health Conference on campus, an enlightening second GROW internship, and a strong set of fundraising campaigns, we definitely reached if not exceeded our goals in the past year.! ! The majority of our executive board and dedicated members graduated this past spring, which presents us with new challenges but also new opportunities. We’ve recruited a crew of enthusiastic underclassmen this past year, and we’re looking forward to seeing our chapter’s dynamic change and grow with new perspectives, innovative strategies and fresh ideas. ! ! Our second GROW trip during the summer presented possibilities for new directions with our partner EAPSEC. In the upcoming year, we plan on solidifying our partnership by defining specific projects and increasing our financial support.! ! We’re absolutely buzzing with excitement as to what the upcoming year holds. Thanks to all of our members, both current and past - your involvement and contributions have made such an impact on our chapter and are truly helping us make strides in the movement for global health equity!! ! ABOUT US

GlobeMed at Penn State University In 2005, Liz Francis founded the GlobeMed at Penn State chapter to responsibly and effectively engage students in global health. From 2006-2008, GlobeMed at PSU was partnered with CURE International in Honduras and raised over $5,000 to improve access to care among pediatric orthopedic patients. ! In November 2008, we partnered with EAPSEC, (Equipo de Apoyo en Salud y Educación y Comunitaria) “Team for the Support of Community Health and Education,” a grassroots NGO based in Chiapas, Mexico. In May 2010, four dedicated members spent a week solidifying our amazing partnershipwith EAPSEC in Chiapas. The four learned about Chiapan healthcare from the community health workers and presented our monetary donation to fund the annual health worker workshops. ! We are currently working with EAPSEC to develop ideas for future sustainable projects. During our first year, we had fewer than 15 members and raised $3,400. Since then, we have raised nearly $15,000 for several different projects, engaged many more students, and graduated over 50 alumni.!

since our founding in September 2005 , our chapter has grown from to members.

KEY FACT: Chiapas has the highest rate of tuberculosis in all of Mexico, and it is estimated that 14% of new cases are MDR (multi-drug resistant).!

The region of southern Mexico, especially the state of Chiapas have had continual political tension with the Mexican government. From Spanish colonization in the 16 century to the present, indigenous communities of southern Mexico have faced injustices ranging from forced serfdom to unequal access to social services. Still searching for a number of political changes, most notably land reform, many Chiapanecos are very dissatisfied. When asked when the violence ended after the Zapatista uprising in 1994, Dagmar Castillo Roblero quickly responded, “It has never ended, now it is a continual structural violence”.! !

OUR PARTNER

[About EAPSEC] FOUNDED IN 1985 EAPSEC was established in 1985 during the Guatemalan Civil War. Thousands of refugees fled into southern Mexico, and a fledgling network of health promoters provided humanitarian medical treatment and supplies to the refugees. Since then EAPSEC has expanded to 80 health promoters in 4 regions in Chiapas. The EAPSEC team in Chiapas employs a nimble, horizontal organizational structure in which each member serves as a Health Educator/Facilitator with a different area of focus and responsibilities. The team collaborates to create curricula, deliver workshops, provide logistical support and support community organizing for the health promoters of each community.!

$4,000 TO FUND TWO CONFERENCES, OR "TALLERES" FOR THE HEALTH PROMOTERS.

To raise $4,000 to fund two conferences for the education and training of health promoters.! ! Promoters will travel to one of EAPSEC’s four regions and learn about a particular them at each event. In 2011, the health promoters learned a great variety of knowledge and skills that they will share with their community, ranging from the growing concerns of global warming to how to use stitched in case of an emergency. Not only do the promoters learn important skills during the conferences, but they are ale to travel and meet with other community leaders. However common it is in the United States to travel and attend conferences, many health promoters did not leave their communities before they began attending conferences sponsored by EAPSEC.!

28 DISCUSSIONS!

10 EVENTS! During the 2010-2011 year, GlobeMed at Penn State challenged our members and our campus to expand upon the lenses through which we analyze global health and social justice. From in-chapter debates about the validity of alternative medicine to an exploration of mental health in the developing world, we opened our eyes to the broad spectrum of issues facing global health equity. Controversy was often the key to success in our events: a distinguished panel debate regarding the legalization of prostitution during our exploration of sexual rights and global health pitted religious leaders against feminist intellectuals and representatives from the LGTB community. Such events challenged us to transcend our traditional moral paradigms and consider cultural relativism and the realities of structural violence that render realities like sexual slavery and prostitution inescapable. From an educational perspective, GlobalHealthU culminated in the Fourth Annual Penn State Global Health Conference, which brought 250 students and community members together for a two-day series of speaker workshops, keynote speeches, panel debates, and a benefit dinner themed "Change for Chiapas". The Keynote speaker, Dr. Alfredo Quinones, gave insight into the socio-economic barriers posed by global health through his journey from illegal immigrant and migrant worker to head of the Johns Hopkins Brain Tumor Center. Lindsay Palazuelos from EAPSEC offered a secondary keynote to connect us directly with our partner. From a "Lessons from Haiti" workshop on public and political infrastructure with Dr. Evan Lyon of PIH to a workshop detailing the shortcomings of Medicare and Medicaid in the United States with renown TEDx presenter Dr. Chris Calkins to a panel discussion surrounding the conference theme, "Possibilities and Limitations in Global Health", the conference truly engaged students in a diverse spectrum of global health issues.!

4 weeks

For our grow trip GlobeMed at PSU traveled to Chiapas, Mexico to become better integrated with our partner EAPSEC as well as identify which of our partner's needs we could best work with. In Chiapas we traveled to many varied communities throughout the state where health promotors who work within our partner's network worked and lived. We saw diversity in the needs and limitations of the communities we visited. From communities that lacked access to good doctors, to others which from years of abuse and discrimination at the hands of the government didn't trust the health care that the government was provided and a few that lacked access to health care services due to the fact they lived in more isolated regions of Chiapas. But in no community was despair or helplessness present. In every community the health promotors were proud of the services they were providing no matter the level of help they could provide. No health promoter felt that they had complete knowledge and everyone, even those who were not health promoters, were willing to learn so that they could help their people.!

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

WE

GLOBEMED AT PENN STATE UNIVERSITY joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a networkwide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an openended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. ! ! OUR QUESTION: What do you see in our future?! ! BEHIND THE SCENES: [GlobeMed set up in the Penn State Student Union and asked students to finish the sentence, "in our future...." We hoped people would envision the world they would hope to see in 10, 20 or 30 years. Some people saw super-fast cars and space travel, but many students did describe that they hoped to live in a world with food for all, a cure for AIDS, without structural violence. While it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of college life, we hoped that those who stopped to talk with us took a few minutes to think about the future and the steps that they could take to move towards that future.! ! What do you see MORE WDSJ ACTION -----------------------------------! in our future?  ! What's a dollar to you? : We asked Penn State students - what does a dollar mean to you? A hot dog? A lottery ticket? A pack of gum? We then told them how far their dollar could go in a country like Mexico. It could pay for medicine, a nutritional packet, clean water. Students were then more than willing to donate a dollar, or two, or even ten, knowing that the impact of their dollar could go farther if given to such a cause.! ! ASKED OVER 30 PEOPLE !AT PENN STATE UNIVERSITY. ! HERE’S HOW THEY RESPONDED >>
