This past year as co-presidents has been an exciting time full of successes and failures, new experiences and friendships, and a whole lot of GlobeMed love. We would be lying if we told you the past year didn’t include many hurdles as we navigated university policy, recruited our very first chapter members, and strengthened our bond with our partner. Despite the obstacles we faced, we feel that leading a GlobeMed chapter has been one of the most rewarding (and fun!) periods of our lives. Our GlobeMed campaigns, globalhealthU events, and community building activities became the highlights of our time on campus, and the chapter members became some of our closest friends. As we traveled to Peru this past July for our very first GROW trip we became fast friends with our partner organization, Dios es Amor, and feel so fortunate to have cultivated an enduring relationship with an amazing organization. We are deeply grateful for the support of our friends, family, the GlobeMed network, and our dedicated chapter members. It is truly remarkable to belong to such a brilliant network that is constantly sharing knowledge and generating discussion about our shared passions and challenges. We hope that in the coming years our chapter members will continue to inspire a passion for global health and social justice both within and extending outside of the Vanderbilt community. We thank you all for an incredible year and for your support in the future. GlobeMed love, Amanda Sarpolis and Daniela Isaza 2010-2011 Co-Presidents

ABOUT US
GlobeMed at Vanderbilt University GlobeMed at Vanderbilt was founded in the fall of 2010, and was one of thirteen new chapters that year. In the summer of 2010 GlobeMed at Vanderbilt was partnered with Dios es Amor, a grassroots organization located mainly in Lima, Peru. Their mains aims are to improve the education, nutrition, and health of surrounding communities. Our aim this past year was to help fund the construction of a waiting room for a clinic they are building in Las Antillas, Peru. Since our chapter started in 2010 we have recruited twenty-one dedicated members, raised over 5,000 dollars for our partner project, and sent two members on our first GROW trip.
since our founding in september 2010 , our chapter has grown from to members.

DIOS ES AMOR [WORKS IN LIMA, PERU] POPULATION: 7,600,000
KEY FACT: Approximately 5.3 million people in Peru dont have access to safe water and another 9.2 million dont have access to improved sanitation services. KEY FACT: 34.8% of Peruvians are under the poverty line
The largest issues that have come up in Peru involving the health system is the lack of access to health care in the area. The government has gotten involved to provide primary health care to people who can't afford it. The problem with this system is that people don't get seen at a convenient time, and they often have to wait to be seen by the doctor which can take all day. Because this is inconvenient for people they don't go to the doctor as often. The government has opened different clinics in impoverished areas to provide health care. While these clinics have a great infrastructure and have doctors, the majority of them do not have pharmacies or provide medications. At these hospitals and clinics people are diagnosed by doctors, but don't have readily available treatments and often remain sick. While some doctors are willing to go to the impoverished areas to treat people, the majority will not because of the lack of facilities and the conditions in the impoverished areas.

OUR PARTNER
[About Dios es Amor] FOUNDED IN 1970
GlobeMed at Vanderbilt's partnership with Dios es Amor began in the summer of 2010. The organization was originally created by an Italian couple in Peru to provide a home for orphans in Lima. When the couple grew too old to manage the organization, they turned it over to Mili and her husband Ignacio who both had a vision to expand the organization. The mission of Dios es Amor became to positively influence human development in the community with focuses in education, empowerment, health, and environmental sustainability using adequate tools and covering the necessary essentials to make this possible. Now they not only house a few young boys, but they also provide healthcare to various communities in and around Lima, meals and after school tutoring for children in the community of La Tablada, run a recycling program that engages the community, and have various programs to improve the self-esteem of the elderly in the area.

[Why heath care facilities?] Our project this year is to fund the construction of the waiting room as part of a new clinic in Las Antillas, Peru. The waiting room plays an invaluable role in the healthcare setting. It not only provides shelter from the elements but also allows doctors and nurses to assess the immediate state of patients, and for the patients to learn about health education. Perhaps more importantly, it lends a sense of dignity to patients who would normally be forced to wait outside. This matter is important to our partner because it leads to a more responsive patient population and better adherence to treatment plans.

OUR PROJECT
Our project with Dios es Amor was to help fund the construction of a waiting room as part of a new clinic in Las Antillas. The project that GlobeMed at Vanderbilt will be supporting this year is the building of part of a basic health care clinic in Las Antillas, Peru. The clinic is going to be built in phases, in order for the clinic to start functioning as soon as possible. This year we helped fund the fencing around the property and the construction of the main room which will serve as the waiting room. The Project will provide permanent health care for the people of that area as opposed to the care that they currently receive only once a month from volunteers. We hope to build off of this project and continue to help the clinic grow. It will be clear that the project has made an impact in the community after the clinic has been built. The success of the project will be directly correlated to the number of patients that are coming to the clinic and receiving care.

TOTAL FUNDS RAISED FOR DIOS ES AMOR IN 2010 – 2011:
$5,291.73 In our first year on campus GlobeMed at Vanderbilt raised over $5,000 for our partner, Dios es Amor, to help fund the waiting room of a new rural health clinic in Peru.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR Fish For A Wish OCTOBER 22, 2010
During a single day of sales at several campus locations we sold over 120 goldfish with bowls and food. As a new organization on campus, this gave us a great way to get our name out there and to publicize for future events. Every fish included a small brochure about GlobeMed at Vanderbilt and our partner, Dios es Amor. While goldfish have no direct association with our partner, it was a tremendously effective fundraiser and provided a means to tell hundreds of students about our organization.
Gigi's Cupcakes Sale FEBRUARY 10, 2011 Using a combination of Facebook to advertise and Survey Monkey to take orders, we pre-sold approximately 150 cupcakes at $5 each. This allowed us to ensure a profit while taking almost no risk of losing money. We ordered about 30 extra cupcakes and then set up at various campus locations where people could either pick up pre-ordered cupcakes or buy them on the spot. We used this opportunity to continue spreading information about our organization and our partner in addition to raising a significant amount of money.

We hosted a screening of "Mountains of Hope," a documentary depicting the challenges health care workers face in Lesotho's health care system, which includes a shortage of doctors. Everyone actively participated in our weekly discussions, combining areas of expertise in politics, economics, and medicine, in order to generate a multi-dimensional view of health care inequities.

COMMUNITY BUILDING Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
21 # OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS: 07 TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS:
Community building is essential to ensuring a chapters success. Through various retreats, parties, and chapter excursions we were able to ensure that all of our chapter members felt comfortable and connected with one another. During out first executive retreat we were able to learn about each others passion for global health and about basic leadership skills essential to leading our chapter. Our staff meetings involved a relaxed atmosphere, where all members felt comfortable sharing their opinions regarding various global health issues and upcoming campaigns, and even funny and embarrassing stories from the weekend. GlobeMed at Vanderbilt's chapter is truly an integrated group of people that not only call each other fellow globemedders, but friends as well.
[GRASSROOTS ON-SITE WORK] Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students make a positive impact in the community by working alongside their partner organization to further ongoing and new projects.
JULY 4, 2011– JULY 27, 2011
“After countless late night chats with Mili ranging from topics of global health to our favorite foods, going out dancing with Moises and Esteban, and traveling with Violeta, it was clear our connection with Dios es Amor had become more than a partnership, it had become a friendship. The cultivation of this relationship with our partner is going to be the driving force behind the success of our chapter for years to come.” -- Daniela Isaza, c/o 2013
02 LENGTH OF STAY: 3 weeks # OF GLOBEMED GROW INTERNS:
WORK DESCRIPTION: The 2011 GROW interns work involves observing and documenting all of the projects that Dios es Amor has taken on, learning about their history, and creating a strong bond with the members of the organization. The 2011 GROW interns took on a variety of tasks including helping to triage patients (checking them in, height weight, documentation etc.), helping to expand the recycling program, soliciting various medical companies for donations, and helping Dios es Amor to better understand GlobeMed and our passion for global health equity.

GROW INTERNSHIP
WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
GLOBEMED AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. OUR QUESTION: If you only had $1 a day what would you spend it on?
If you only had $1 a day what would you spend it on?
BEHIND THE SCENES: This question was asked as a quick thought provoker for our chapter and those passing by. We found that food and water were about equally represented, while health care was extremely underrepresented in our members answers. Before we can worry about our health, we must worry about our survival. Food and water are the most basic necessities of life, and if we only had $1 we would spend it on either one of those options. We hoped that by asking this question, and having people see the responses that they would understand that for many health care is not something that is easily attainable for all. We used chalk to write this question and the various responses in the hopes that others passing by would think about these issues.
WE ASKED OVER 22 PEOPLE AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY.
HERE’S HOW THEY RESPONDED >>
WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE GlobeMed at Vanderbilt University asked 22 people to answer the question,

2011 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT
2011 DELEGATES: Daniela Isaza, Joey Starnes, Rebecca Copeland, Amanda Sarpolis
“Going to summit gave me the opportunity to see an amazing group of speakers that are at the forefront of global health, but that was not the part that was truly inspiring to me. The most exciting part was seeing the tremendous dedication of current GlobeMed students and graduated alumni. These people are not super heroes but regular students with a true desire to change the world. Seeing what GlobeMed students can do during their college careers and afterward let me see that changing the world can be a career and that I am not alone in seeking a better tomorrow.”

April 7 – 10 in Evanston, IL Featuring Honorary Keynote
DR. JOIA MUKHERJEE Chief Medical Officer, Partners in Health
Our plans for the coming summer 2011 are to strengthen the bond with our partner on GlobeMed at Vanderbilt's very first GROW trip. In the coming year we hope involve more of the Vanderbilt community and our chapter in various GlobeMed activities. We aim to do this by hosting at least four public globalhealthU events, raising over 5,000 dollars for our partner through campaigns that will directly educate the Vanderbilt community about our mission and projects, and by involving the members of the chapter in at least six community building excursions. By sending at least eight different chapter members to the annual GlobeMed Leadership institute and summit we hope to further connect with the network, and show students how big of an impact the network can make.
By 2015 we hope to inspire at least one hundred GlobeMed at Vanderbilt alum to go into the world and to continue striving for global health equity.
