Monogram process reflection

Research
My research for this project began with researching Saul Bass in order to create a monogram that was reflectie of him. Immediately I learned that Bass was a graphic designer that was based in Los Angeles and New York. I expanded my research into two areas: the work he had done for others and the work he had done for himself. The work he had done for outside parties became a focus for me on style and color choices. When it came to the actual mark making and type choices, I wanted to be influenced by his personal brand. 4

Discovery
My goal for creating these sketches originally was to go for a large volume of ideas. This way I could explore and eliminate as many directions as possible. I began my initial sketches with the paths I deemed more obviously connected with his work and then I pushed away as I realized I wanted the monogram to represent Saul Bass as a person and an designer as opposed to the monogram being a reflection of just his work. I tried to explore several media that I felt would reflect the materials he worked with: ink and paper-cut. After each class I compiled the feedback for my next steps onto one page to consolidate my guiding feedback. 6

As I was thinking about how the cards are things that people physically inteact with, turn over, read, and archive. I tried to have fun with the information on the back using his La address. His phone number being his birthdate “2” his deathdate. His address similarly uses his death date and the phrase “gone fishin’” as a play on his name “Bass” in relationship to teh fish. A reference he made on his signature with a charicature of himself as a fish. As well as a more synical connection to the phrase “Gone’ Fishin’” and his death date. 15

Refinement
The refinement process for me was a lot of little decisions about the marks I had made and how to frame them on the card. I thought about how the marks could interact with the information I included. I wanted the card to be bright, bold, and include the character quality of that type and shapes that Bass included. As well as the hand written quality in his name. In refinifng the monogram, the marks, and the card organization, I made sure to print frequently in varying sizes to gage how the holder of the card would interact with it. 18

Criticism
My feedback was important in choosing a direction that felt unique to Bass but kept away from his work being the sole influence of the card. Such as the direction to lean into the script so much so that it guided the design for the back as well. From feedback I decided to keep the typeface simple but maintain the character of the script in the monogram and the signature. As well as keep the framing of the type simple by altering the orignal monogrma mark. 20
21
Part of my processs was playing with the idea of having four different cards with four slightly varying monograms. I decided to continue the exploration in thinking how the back of the cards could vary as well, creating, with the four, the larger monograms. Ultimately through feedback decided to focus on refining a single back but allowing the experimention from the four to guide the best use of those compostions in the final version. 22
