Research
Starting with the last poster project, we were assigned to go through and create a set of rules for it. This presented us with the challenge of describing an abstract design process in the concrete terms of the final product. Once the rules for the poster project were created, I was able to not only see what made the poster what it was but what could be changed about it through a different iteration. We then talked about rules that should be kept global vs. local in order to preserve the legibility of the poster or the integrity of the design.

This data visualization represents an average coffee consumption by two undergrad students at Washington university in st. Louis. The data takes place over a 6 day period; in which each cup correlates to 1 cup of coffee. Additionally, roughly 60% of coffee was consumed in the morning.
The first step in this process was creating rules for a former proect: data visualization. We interpreted this project as having the poster remade exactly as it was. When we got to class we learned about global and local variables for things you would allow to change and things you wouldn’t. In revising for these changes it became clear that allowing for interpretation also allow for variability in the data that would make the poster ineffective, finding this balance was the focus of this exercise.

Creating rules for our last poster was an effective way to understand the project and what globala and local variables were, there was more to it than just recreating the poster in exactly the same way but adding opportunity for variablity that was in keeping with the visual language of the poster. I realized this was an effective tool for iteration as well, writing out what the rules for allows for the designer to get rid of unnecessary elements for feasibilities sake and out of that came new ideas for the poster I made. I found out it could have been horizantal with square tables.

I chose the Chapter April 26, 1905 for my poster. I was intrigued by the landscape aspect of it, that there was a height variable where higher was better. I started thinkin about how to create height on a 2d plain beside vertically, I was drawn to the idea of cutting and stacking paper because it’s a theme I’ve been exploring this semester in places it was inkeeping with the theme of the project. I wanted to explore how type could play in with the texture more, by printing it and cutting it up.

Soon it became a matter of simplyfying the landscape and making the circles a taboo because every came in with them.

Refinement
In refinining my rules, I decided that I should take the collage process a step further. At this point the rules were not reflective of the collage element of the poster. With influence from critiques I wanted to design the rules poster to not only reflect the visual language of the posters it creates, but allow the rules poster to be what creates the variations of the rules. So I scanned the paper I was using, placed the text on top of it in various locations, and rewrote my rules to be instructions for assembling the poster.

17
Criticism
This project was unique in that our version of review was more based on how our rules were followed. For the most part I thought my rules were executed very well by everyone who tried them before we did the final posters. The final one would have followed this trend as well, though my partner decided to stray from the rules slightly and edit the psoter digitally, which was not in the rules. Despite this, I do like how the poster turned out but I would add another rule that specifies using all the of the sheets and not altering the final product digititally in InDesign.
