Research
My research began with going through the given materials and taking note of things I would like to draw from. The images for the architectural lectures, such as Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, became my jumping off point. The buildings in the documentation led my following a more prominent grid.
4
The hierarchy of the information on the grid came from thinking about what information is crucial for the viewer at Sam Fox or out of the school. What would be most visually engaging for the viewer at a wall full of posters. Or the viewer who is looking for a particular day and event.

I decided on a vertical format and a heavier font weights informed by the architectural image resources. When considering the visual hierarchy, I decided the months and dates for the events should be the most visible elements so that a viewer could orient themselves quickly. The second read on the hierarchy was directed towards the event titles for those who were looking for a particular event. Then, informational details such as time and place.

I wanted to push the materiality of the poster more. I felt that the background the content of the calendar was sitting on could use more visual interest. At this point it was suggested that I consider the building materials off of which I was basing my design. I started to play around with more dimension and dropped in textures that reflected the materials in the artist’s designs themselves. I drew on not only the materials but the textures they created in illustrations that would highlight the framework of the poster.

Refinement
At the refining stage of the process it came down to looking at the minor details of the poster. The small areas where type was having issues of lines being too long, en dashes, and variations on font weight for certain portions of information such as time. I also continued to adjust my illustration so it would fit the visual language of the body copy. Which pushed me to consider color choices in both the illustration and the type. I made sure to continue to print at size and check to ensure my visual hierarchy had not changed.

Criticism
Finally, during critique I learned that I could spend more time at the end of the process looking into even smaller details and requirements. Things such as the requirement to add the WashU logo and how I treated that, while it didn’t need to be a driving force of the design, I felt I could have considered it more in my placement of it within the design I created. After critique I made the logo the white version as well as adjust its size so it fit better with the grid, at a size that fit with the existing visual language. The other note I made was looking at how each individual piece of type read once it was printed, some things get lost in the ink-jet print process and somethings conflicting with the background to begin with. These fixes came in adjusting the illustration and the This project allowed me to find what made it engaging for me, as well as taught me to what level of detail I still need to be considering for and refining to.
