Dining room

Welcome

to my home A bit about me

The dining room was left as a plain white, boxy room by the previous owner and Paolo knew he wanted to inject some colour. ‘I went for Tuscan Terracotta by Dulux, as the peachy shade adds warmth and I knew it would work well when paired with the forest green dining chairs from Made,’ he says. ‘We also decided to strip the carpet to expose the original floorboards beneath. It was back-breaking work doing it ourselves, but we’re thrilled with the end result!’

I’m Paolo D’Agostino Bowe, a general manager for a central London restaurant, and I live here with my partner, Filippo, and our cat, Aldo.

Where I live My home is a twobedroom Edwardian terraced house in Whyteleafe, Surrey. We bought the property in January 2018.

What I wanted to change

Feature and styling Cassie Pryce Photos Simon Whitmore

The interior was tired and plain, but I knew that with a lick of paint I could give it a fresh start. It was mostly cosmetic work.

How I made it my own I’ve used colour in every room to put our stamp on the décor to create a look that’s personal to us.

My favourite part The living room has become the heart of our home. It’s my favourite spot to unwind in after a long day at work.

transformed his dated Edwardian property into a vibrant and stylish home November 2019 17

‘Painting the walls green has livened up our inherited kitchen with a bit of colour’

‘I’m a bit of a maximalist when it comes to styling my home and I don’t like to leave walls bare’, says Paolo. ‘I often switch up my artwork when I feel it’s time for a change’

My story...

Having lived in the city for 10 years, Filippo and I were craving a more peaceful lifestyle and so decided to make the move to leafy Surrey. Some good friends of ours recommended the area, which we didn’t know at all, and we only viewed a couple of properties before seeing this Edwardian terraced house, which ticked all of our boxes. The previous owner had lived here for 30 years and we could quickly see that it was a great spot to settle down in for the long run. The original period features of the house instantly charmed me and, luckily, no structural work needed doing which meant we could focus the budget on the interior. The bathroom was the first room we tackled, as it was extremely dated and was quite a big job to carry out, so we started on this before we moved in. I’m not shy when it comes to using colour and, after lots of research and paint tester pots, I chose several punchy shades to give each room a different look. In the bathroom we went for a bold teal and brass scheme. The living room has a similar paint shade, and we even painted the fire surround in the same striking colour. Because of my work, I’m always taking inspiration from the interior design of restaurants, bars and hotels, as well as using Instagram to share my ideas @thelittlegoldhouse. I was conscious not to make the house a replica of images I’ve seen on Pinterest or Instagram though, so took time choosing pieces that I really loved and that reflected our individual style, rather than a passing trend. I’m glad we went bold with our colour choices – every room now feels loved and lived in and the house has most definitely been brought back to life – we love it here! 18 homestylemag.co.uk

Inspiring homes Kitchen ‘We were lucky that the kitchen had been recently renovated when we purchased the house’, explains Paolo. To put his own stamp on the existing design, Paolo switched out the plastic door pulls for sleek, brass T-bar handles and changed the chrome kitchen tap for a brass version, too. ‘You don’t have to spend a lot to make a big difference – these simple changes have made the kitchen feel a lot more in keeping with the rest of the house.’

Under-cabinet spotlights provide useful direct lighting for preparing food on the surfaces. Next to this wall cabinet, Paolo has placed three Ikea spice racks – they make handy wall storage and he has painted them the same shade as the walls to blend them into the design of the room. They make use of the space in a compact kitchen.

Style idea Switching your kitchen handles will instantly transform the look of your units

‘I sourced the brass T-bar handles brand new from eBay,’ says Paolo. ‘They were very easy to fit and instantly made a big difference to the look and feel of the whole kitchen.’ While Paolo is happy with the small changes he has made, as a lover of eclectic interiors, next up he’s planning on adding wall and floor tiles, to add some interest with pattern.

Expert advice Revive i original i i l floorboards

‘Gold accents tie each room together as a continuous theme throughout the house’

Give new life to your existing floorboards O Begin by removing the existing floor covering, taking care not to damage the wooden boards beneath. Check that the wood is in good condition structurally and fill any gaps between the boards, to reduce draughts. O Hiring an electric sander is

recommended, preferably with the addition of a floor-edging model to take the machine right up to the skirting boards.

Check for any loose nails and hammer them into place first. O With all the furniture removed

from the room, work with the door shut to reduce the amount of dust spreading into the rest of the house. Follow the sander’s instructions and slowly walk up and down the room, changing the sandpaper when needed. O Once the dust has settled,

vacuum the room, wipe down the floors and leave to dry. Then apply your chosen varnish, either by brush or using floor pads. Always test in a discreet corner of the room, to check you’re happy with the finish. 2SZIQFIV 2 F 19 9

‘I wanted to create a contemporary yet classic look in this space and bring together all the styles I love’, says Paolo. The Chesterfield sofa from Love Your Home complements the period of the property and Dulux’s Inky Pool 2 paint is a striking backdrop

Inspiring p g homes A dated gas fire hid the original fireplace and Paolo has lovingly reinstated this beautiful feature by painting the wooden surround and retiling the hearth. ‘It’s now the focal point of the room’

‘Velvet furniture is a good choice if you have a cat, as the tight weave of the fabric is hard to scratch!’ Making Make a tassel mirror on page 27

Paolo put his creativity to the test and made this bespoke drinks cabinet

Paolo has introduced quirky details and gold accents, such as picture frames and 3D wall art into each room to give the house an overarching scheme. He also upcycled the mirror himself by adding tassels to a plain circular mirror he picked HomeSense p pi cked up at HomeSense.

Living room Benefitting from a large bay window, the living room is a naturally bright space and so Paolo decided to go for a rich teal colour on the walls and woodwork, creating a cocooning effect. ‘We brought the velvet sofa with us from our previous flat and so the paint had to complement the blue velvet’, he explains. ‘I added accents of mustard yellow, gold and coral when it came to accessorising.’ Paolo is also a fan of upcycling. ‘I glued halved wooden dowels to the front of our drinks cabinet, to create a ridged surface, then painted it and added gold legs and handles.’ 2SZIQFIV 2 SZIQFIV F 21

Paolo dyed his white cotton bedding to a teal blue colour, as he couldn’t find the right shade. ‘It was very easy to do and cost a fraction of the price of buying a brand-new set’

Style idea Swing-arm wall lights are ideal for bedside lighting, as they can be adjusted

Master bedroom Wanting to create a warm and cosy master bedroom, Paolo has painted the walls in a deep taupe and hung metallic wallpaper behind the bed to add some texture. This marble-effect Makrana design, from Osborne & Little, has a luxurious finish and gives the bedroom a sumptuous focal point. ‘Farrow & Ball’s Cinder Rose turned out to be the perfect shade of pink to use as an accent,’ he says.

Inspiring p g homes ‘I originally asked the tiler to lay the wall tiles in a herringbone format, but he didn’t feel confident enough to take this on. Instead, I opted for this linear configuration. I love the geometric effect’

Little Greene’s Loriini wallpaper softens the wall tiles and introduces a delicate pattern to the bathroom scheme

Bathroom The bathroom was the first room on n Paolo’s hit list when he purchased the property. ‘The white suite was very dated and dark navy tiles made the space feel cold and enclosed,’ says Paolo. A teal palette has given the new bathroom a stylish edge. Paolo also sourced brass fixtures and fittings. ‘I knew anything in a different finish just wouldn’t sit right.’

‘I’m not colour shy, so I chose punchy shades to give each room a different look’

What I learned... O It’s important to be flexible with your ideas. I found that most decorating schemes change from the initial concept as you progress, so be prepared to adapt. O Do your research when it comes to tradespeople. Make sure you feel confident leaving the job in their hands. For more complicated tasks show them photos to explain your vision to avoid confusion.

Wall lights, from Spark & Bell, frame the mirror above the vanity unit. ‘As a finishing touch, I have framed vintage prints from Dior Homme adverts to create a themed gallery wall,’ says Paolo

O Try your hand at upcycling to create unique furniture. I made the upholstered storage bench in the bedroom from scratch, as I couldn’t find anything suitable.

‘Our living room comes into its own during the winter months. I painted the chimney breast wall where the TV hangs in Inchyra Blue by Farrow & Ball. This darker colour helps blend our large TV into the room. We’ve added a large blush pink velvet pouffe for comfort, along with lots of storage including the shelving unit and the small sideboard both from Swoon Editions to display our vintage record player, vases and other decorative accessories.’

A bit about me I’m Lauren Lewis and I’m a fashion textile designer and cofounder of rust creative studio @ruststudio_. I live with my partner Adam, and our lovely cat called Penelope.

Where I live My home is a fourbedroom 1940s terrace house in Lancing, West Sussex. I’ve lived here since 2016.

What I wanted to change

Feature and styling Maxine Brady Photo Fiona Walker-Arnott

The house was in need of some TLC. Both the bathrooms needed gutting and the kitchen was very lacklustre.

How I made it my own We redesigned and installed a new walkin wet room and bathroom. We then painted each room in neutral shades to create cohesion throughout. We also did the kitchen.

My favourite part I really love the overall finish and boho styling of the bathroom.

My story...

In January 2016 Adam and I moved into our first home together. The house needed no structural work but was very basic, with hardly any storage and the bathrooms were past their best. We wanted to create a relaxing space to come home to after a busy day’s work, which reflected both of our personalities. We started by giving the kitchen a quick refresh. The units themselves were fine but we replaced the tiles and worktop, along with the sink and taps. We then repainted the room, roping in Adam’s mum and dad to help us. Our idea was to keep to neutral minimalist tones but add colour with furniture and accessories that are easily interchangeable if we ever get bored and want to switch things up. Budget-wise we had to be clever with money and we saved up for things for our home as we went along. We bought furniture during January sales and took advantage of bank holiday discount deals. Shopping clever meant that even with a tight budget we didn’t have to compromise on our design ideas. The two bathrooms were the first big projects we tackled together. I was drawn to traditional-style fixtures and fittings that I know would stand the test of time. We installed a walk-in wet room upstairs and a freestanding bath in our master bathroom for our own little piece of hotel-style luxury. After several years of hard work, our renovation projects are almost complete. Now weekends are spent leisurely reading magazines rather than looking up radiator valves, and my Saturday mornings are filled with brunches with the girls instead of trips to the garden centre. I do miss the DIY though and I can’t wait to get stuck into another project! 30 homestylemag.co.uk

Lauren opted for an extendable tap that makes it easier to keep the whole area and surface clean. She’s placed quite a few plants around her worktops to brighten up the neutral kitchen and dining area. Plants also make the space feel more alive.

‘This kitchen tap is a lifesaver,’ says Lauren

Kitchen

Welcome

to my home A bit about me I’m Jade Doutch and I live with my son Adam, and my two Boston terriers, Winston and Coco. I have an interiors Instagram account @jade.doutch

‘I was thinking long term with the kitchen and although I knew I wanted a dark kitchen, I chose solid oak, from CL Jones, so that I can sand it down and change the colour in the future without needing to change the whole kitchen. I chose an Ikea sink because it was so much cheaper than other brands. I decided to have four different wall coverings in this space; Moroccan tiles, bare brick, original stone, and metro tiles, and the builders thought I was mad, but I instinctively knew it would work, and keeping the colour scheme neutral means they complement each other.’

Where I live My home is a threebedroom 1930s semi in Holyhead, Anglesey. We moved in in 2002.

What I wanted to change I moved here when I was quite young and had just had a baby so it was originally done up on a tiny budget, with second-hand buys and hand-me-downs.

How I made it my own 17 years later I added an extension, uncovered the floorboards and then decorated to create a boho-inspired home.

Making Create a barn star on page 50

This original Georgian larder cupboard was the starting point for the kitchen. After looking at lots of tiles these Meknes Maalem Decor Matt Pattern tiles from Walls and Floors were winners

My story... I moved here when I was only 22 and looking back it was a real wreck. An old lady had lived here for years in just two rooms, so there were hardly any working sockets and there were cracks in the walls. But the survey came back fine and I wasn’t daunted because I was young and romantic about having my first home. We gradually did it up and I continued to live here after my divorce. Recently I decided to extend the kitchen to create a bigger, more sociable space, which then turned into a complete renovation of the whole house. I knew I wanted to open up the back and my uncle, a retired architect, drew up plans which included a large kitchen-diner, a snug, and bi-folds out to the lovely south facing garden. It was a big job but luckily I found great builders who understood the look I was trying to achieve. I wanted to inject an industrial feel in the new space and the worktop-to-ceiling white metro tiles, from County Tiles in Wales, were a cost-effective way of achieving this. Most of the beams came from my aunty’s farm and the shelves are scaffolding boards that I bashed about a bit to give them extra character. I also began to move to the dark side. I initially painted the fireplaces black, and then started painting some of my key pieces of furniture, but I decided to keep the walls light because I wanted the space to be bright and welcoming. I also pulled up all the carpets to reveal, mostly, decent floorboards. The last room to be done was the bathroom, which is tiny so I took the controversial decision to remove the bath and add a walk-in shower. The whole process has taken a couple of years and has been quite progressive, but it’s finally done and I’m able to enjoy the finished space now. 42 LSQIWX]PIQEK GS YO

‘My builder brought me a selection of three different batches of reclaimed bricks to choose from for the back wall but I decided to mix and match them all. The sideboard was £30 from a local selling site. It didn’t look particularly special, but now I’ve painted it black it’s become a focal point'

‘I was on the hunt for two armchairs to finish off this spot and I put a request on a local selling site. Dining area ‘I didn’t want the middle wall divide i id i e but to take it out would have cost too much as it’s holding up the back of the house, but actually it helps zone the room. Before the renovation the floor was concrete and I did splash out a bit on these Umbrian limestone tiles from Doga Stone, but the flooring is forever so this was one area I didn’t want to scrimp on. The bi-fold doors were a big expense but I managed to save by finding some on eBay that suited my budget.’ 2

It looked great so then I started painting other bits of furniture, but because I’ve combined the look with real wood and natural textures, it looks warm and fresh rather than dark. Because we have the snug with the log burner in the kitchen to relax in, I wanted to turn this into a cosy cinema room that we could lounge in. This is the only room with some colour and I chose Light Peachblossom by Little Greene to add a bit of warmth.’

Master bedroom ‘This room still has quite a vintage feel from before the update, because it’s got some old wooden chests of drawers and mismatched bedside tables. The cast iron fireplace originally had layers of white paint on it which took me an age to strip off with a heat gun and an electric sander, but it looks so good now. The carpet then came up and luckily the floorboards were in good condition, though the walls needed plastering, before being painted white, to create a backdrop for my accessories.’

‘I will always search for the best deal because I love finding something cheaper!’

Style idea Add interest by layering up your throws and cushions ‘I’ve had the bed for years and it was originally white but black suits my style now, and being wood, I can change it up at any point. My nan bought me the white bed throw and I love its vintage feel’

Inspiring homes Bathroom ‘It was a big decision to remove the bath and just have a walk-in shower. But it made sense because the room is so small. I knew I wanted a patterned floor, and these tiles came from County Tiles. I also really wanted black accessories, but found they were so much more expensive than chrome because black is quite popular at the moment, but I eventually sourced some cheaper products on eBay.’

‘I was totally inspired by some boho accounts on Instagram for this look. I love the simplicity of this jute rug’

Spare room ‘The spare room was a dumping ground and at one point I could hardly open the door. The walls were painted black and wallpapered with pages from a book, and a lot of plaster came off when I stripped the walls. But when it was made good I painted it white and fixed two wooden pallets together to make the bed base, which I love.’

‘The sink cabinet was a bargain buy from eBay and was originally burgundy but I just sanded it and painted it in Antoinette chalk paint by Annie Sloan, then added the basin’

What I learned... O Maintain a really good relationship with your builders. My ideas were constantly evolving, even as the work was being done, but the builders always went with it because they could see what I was trying to achieve. O Go with your gut when deciding on your decoration. I knew a mix of textures and surfaces would look great together, though some of my decisions did cost me time.

‘The lampshade is a £20 basket from TK Maxx. I just ripped the handles off, turned it upside down and pushed the bulb through. I love the cute Victorianstyle radiator in here but it makes me want to replace all the others throughout the house! ‘

O Be clever with lighting. I chose statement lighting above large surfaces like the dining table, spots and directional lighting over the worktop, and string lights for cosy areas.

‘I couldn’t wait to rip up the carpets in here. I was hoping the floorboards would be in good enough condition to restore, but they were too damaged so we replaced them with luxury vinyl tiles in a parquet design. The stove was already there but we removed the orangey wood surround and squared off the plaster to make it feel cleaner. Although we started trying to remove the old black hearth tiles, they were stuck fast so we got a tiler to tile over the top which has worked really well.’

My story...

I bought this house with my ex in 2016, after renting together in Manchester city centre for 18 months. We couldn’t afford to buy in Altrincham or Sale, so when a friend told us Urmston was the next up-and-coming area, we decided to view this three-bedroom Victorian terraced house. It had been rented out for eight years, the kitchen was manky and every wall and ceiling was wallpapered, but I loved the exposed brick, high ceilings and coving. We decided to think about it while on holiday, but it was under offer when we returned. Luckily it came back on the market so we moved quickly and offered the full asking price. The first 10 weeks were spent living with my mum while we stripped everything out. With an old house every job is bigger than anticipated. The more stuff we pulled out, the worse it got. It needed new electrics, a full replaster and a new kitchen before we could move in, which included replacing rotten joists and moving a doorway. After a few big life changes, which included doing a ski season in France and splitting up with my ex I moved back in in February 2019. I had a new job in PR and had found a lodger on spareroom.co.uk. It’s quite a big house for one person so it’s nice having someone around. I also took the opportunity to redecorate throughout, renovate the bathroom and finish the rest of the house with help from my mum. With my ex, the whole house had been painted cream, except the grey bedroom, so I added hints of pink, painted the dining room alcoves green and went for a bold bathroom design to make it feel like it was all mine. I’ve definitely got braver now I’m making all the decisions though – I can’t wait for my next project! 54 homestylemag.co.uk

Adding vibrant art prints, such as this Breathe design from Ink & Drop, has helped Pippa personalise the space when she moved back in. The dining table and bench set was handmade to fit the room

flooring (LVT) for her reception rooms because it’s durable, easy to clean and warm underfoot. At around £20 per metre, it’s an affordable alternative to real wood or stone, and gives a realistic finish. O Click and lock laminate

flooring, made from high density fibreboard with a photographic image, is one of the cheapest options at around

£10 per square metre, and you can save money by laying it yourself. Check out B&Q’s handy guide on YouTube. Modern day production processes have improved no end since laminate took off in the 1980s. Although it has pretty good scratch resistant credentials, it has a shorter life than real wood. O You can’t beat the beauty and

character of solid wood flooring. At £40 to £50 per square metre it’s not cheap, but it’s a wise investment in a long-term home. Go for a lacquered finish if you’re after durability, but an oiled finish makes it easier to re-sand a smaller area if it gets scratched.

‘The pink armchair from Next was my treat when I knew I was moving back in,’ says Pippa. ‘It works so well against the green alcove, which is painted in Bamboo Grove by Valspar.’ The Kaktus print is by Juniqe, the bird cushion came from H&M and the floor lamp is from Aldi. Pippa’s snug corner is a beautifully styled spot that gets a lot of use.

Dining room ‘At first the walls were painted white white, but when I moved back in I was keen to paint the alcoves in a new shade of green Farrow & Ball had just released. I was also working on the launch of a new hotel called Whitworth Locke which is all pink and green, so that was probably ingrained in my brain as well. I’m glad we continued the Camaro vinyl flooring from Polyflor at Home throughout the two spaces as it helps them flow together.’

‘I love that it’s quite a natural colour palette in here and it’s a great space for entertaining,’ says Pippa. The West tray drinks table is from Fire & Co. Pippa has added lots of greenery in this room to brighten up the space. Choose textured ceramic pots or baskets to bring a tactile element to any space. Pippa’s choice of real plants takes time and commitment so opt for fauxs for an easier option. 2SZIQFIV 55

Changing the grey glass splashbacks for marbleeffect metro tiles was a wise move. ‘As the walls aren’t straight, the splashback fell off the wall behind the cooker and smashed all over the floor, which I wasn’t unhappy about,’ she smiles. ‘It looked cold before so this has added texture and warmth’

Inspiring homes Kitchen ‘We’d started planning the new kitchen design before the sale went through as it was a tricky space. You couldn’t have a full run of units on either side because of the door to the utility room and a big chimney breast which housed the cooker. So we knocked down the chimney and our kitchen fitter put up a stud wall with the door in the middle, as well as replacing the rotten floor joists discovered under the wonky laminate flooring. I really wanted a handleless matt grey kitchen but they’re expensive so our kitchen fitter made the carcasses, and sprayed them with matt paint.’

‘This place really feels like my home now!’

Master bedroom ‘I don’t have any wardrobes in here as the small third bedroom was turned into a dressing room, which makes this space feel much bigger. When we first moved in, the ceiling was made of polystyrene so that came down with the wallpaper before it was plastered. I also made sure there were plugs around the bed and removed the dodgy wall lights. Then we re-sanded and lightened the orangey floorboards, and replaced the old curtains with new Venetian blinds, which made the room lighter.’

Style idea Dress bedside tables with potted plants

The colour scheme, with walls painted in Grey Hints by B&Q, evolved further after Pippa moved back in and added pink and green accents. These include the herringbone throw by Fire & Co, art prints by Juniqe and velvet cushions from H&M and TK Maxx

Inspiring homes

‘I intially painted this wall dark grey, but when I moved back in I repainted it in Bottlenose Dolphin by Valspar, which I’m really happy with’

Bathroom ‘The Bathstore vanity unit was my st point, then I pulled everything together on a Pinterest board including the herringbone tiles, black tap and pink walls. I must’ve got about 300 tile samples before I found the right one! One bathroom store quoted me £11,000, but I did everything for £5,100 including fitting as I shopped around for absolutely everything.’

Patchwork floor tiles from Tiles Direct contrast well with a simple white herringbone design on the walls

What I learned... O Do as much as possible yourself to save money. After getting quotes from builders, we discovered the chimney breast in the kitchen could be knocked out by us. O Good tradespeople are invaluable. My mum recommended a brilliant kitchen fitter who helped us rethink the kitchen space and advised us to draw furniture plans to work out where every plug socket would go.

‘The rectangular wall tiles from Tiles Direct weren’t shown in a herringbone style on the website, but I knew they could be laid in that formation. I think the tiler wanted to kill me though!’

O I thought you always had to put the flooring down last but I was wrong. If we’d put down real wood, we would’ve needed beading or to rip up the skirting boards and ruin the freshly plastered walls.

Set your sewing machine to zig zag stitch and untangle the rope. Coil the rope in your hand into a circle measuring 2.5cm in diameter and place it under the needle. Start stitching the rope together to secure the coil by zig zagging back and forth and catching the rope at either side. Your coil is now secured, so continue to zig zag stitch your base until it is 12cm in diameter. Now build the sides by angling the base against the left side of the sewing machine. Continue stitching as the sides of your bowl take shape. Once the sides have reached about 15cm in height, finish your basket by looping under the last 5cm of loose rope.

#myHShome Use the th #myHShome hashtag on Instagram for yyour chance to appear on this very page! Mono magic

We bought a detached bungalow a couple of years ago, which had an over-thetop coastal seaside theme with cornflower blue painted everywhere! I appreciate many interior styles but I always revert to neutral themes and I find this most calming for my home. I love the classic pairing of monochrome with lots of plants and natural elements for a laid-back feel. I’m also a fan of upcycling and this bedside unit was a £10 bargain from a charity shop, which I repainted. I’m so pleased with it! @my_boho_bungalow

Style it dark

As a lover of dark interiors I really wanted to go all out in this room by painting from the skirting boards to the ceiling dark. I used artwork and prints from independent artists such as @byheathkane @badvibeart and my faves @thesecreatives_ to add pops of colour. I really wanted this room to reflect my personality, so added textures pers and patterns to cosy it all up. @8 renovation @83r

Bathing beauty

In the pink

We moved to our Cornish miners cottage last year and have been slowly renovating. The bathroom is the latest room and I wanted to make it bold and beautiful incorporating my favourite colour combo, grey and pink with some greenery to bring the space to life. The rest of our house is quite light and white so I love the contrast of this dark and stylish space, adding some modern luxury. @our_cornish_life

My home is a two-bedroom Victorian terrace in Nottingham. When we moved in the only room that didn’t need redecorating was the bathroom. We’ve just added our own touches with a slogan mat and prints by independent artists. The rest of the house is coming along nicely with dark colours.

Why you’ll

love this look

l Look out for geometric prints and products that are angular – mirrors were a key piece. l Travel was a strong influence with animal skins and mother of pearl being shipped over to add that dramatic statement. There’s plenty of fauxs to choose from on the high street these days! l For an authentic look go for parquet floors and add ostrich feathers, etched glass boxes and reproduction statues.

Home from home

While everyone appreciates somewhere to sling shoes or hang up a coat, it’s often the smaller touches that immediately make guests feel at home. Investing in a few potted plants and lanterns will create a warm, cheery welcome on cold, winter nights. A new door mat or rug can help keep things looking inviting and pristine; and an umbrella stand will ensure wet brollies never have to make it to the spare room! A mirror is also a must-have – and will maximise available light. And for guests’ convenience, why not get a spare set of keys cut so that they can come and go as they please! ENTRANCE

It’s the first thing guests see, so set the tone for their stay b by getting organised inside and out. Start by sweeping paths, checking ligh hting, polishing brassware and cleaning or o even painting your front door – it only takes a day! Then restore order to the hall by fin nding a new home for any non-essential, disscarded items. Add a rack or stand for guests’ coats and bags, and baskets and organisers for smaller items. A storage table is also a handy investment, as is a bench for putting on shoes.

KITCHEN

The kitchen is a hive of activity over Christmas, so get ready by having a good clear out. Ditch out-ofdate items and, if you need to increase cupboard capacity, shop for handy helpers, such as door racks, stackable inserts and pull-out baskets. Investing in wall-mounted rails will allow you to store cooking essentials close to hand and keep prep surfaces clear; or why not squeeze in a well-organised trolley! If your budget allows, now is the time to replace any aging appliances ces, gadgets or cookware.

P People are inevitably drawn to the kkitchen, so rather than having to ask, eensure guests can help themselves to everyday items by rearranging and stocking easy-reach cupboards with everything from glasses and mugs, to teas, coffees and provisions. Alternatively, utilise wasted wall space by adding accessible open shelving, that can be stacked with tempting treats, or think about allocating space for a drinks station, complete with fo sm mart new caddies. Investing in a few sttools will also provide guests with so omewhere to relax and chat – while a set of tea towels added to your shopping list might even encourage th hem to help with the drying up! 2SZIQFIV 79

LIVING ROOM

This sociable space can take a battering over the year, so allocate time to freshen up and curb the clutter. Carpets and upholstery will benefit from a thorough clean. However, while a high street rug may be all you need to disguise tired flooring, if seating is really suffering, new items will need to be ordered early, to ensure delivery. If funds allow, an ottoman would be handy for storage and seating, and an electric fire will add a focal point, around which the family h can gather.

The living room is the obvious place to entertain family and friends, so make sure you can accommodate an influx of guests comfortably, by setting aside time to experiment with different furniture layouts – look to inviting, sociable arrangements that encourage conversation and relaxation, and remember to factor in a tree! Then cosy things up with plenty of tactile cushions and throws that visitors will want to sink into; and ditch overhead bulbs in favour of softly glowing table and floor lamps that help foster a feeling of welcoming warmth. Alternatively, pick up a topper to enhance an older mattress or spruce up a base with a headboard. If a wardrobe is out of the ti ttry space-saving i racks k or question peg rails. WONDER WALL Keep to a theme – whether colour, texture or subject. This will help ensure your gallery wall looks cohesive

Gallery wall

One of the easiest ways to make a house or flat feel truly like your own is to create an awesome gallery wall. They are budget-friendly – especially if you go down the upcycled route. Buy frames in bulk from charity or budget stores and spray paint them all the same colour. But how exactly is nailing frames and other objects to the wall renter-friendly? Let me explain, in two words: adhesive strips! These are perfect for hanging items with a flat back, and when applied properly, they can be removed without leaving any damage. Try creating a moodboard before you start. Are you going to mix it up, or go for a more streamlined effect? Start with the largest frame and build a variety of different frames around that. Lay it out on the floor first, take a snap and don’t overthink it – let your creativity flow!

Expert p advice Removable wallpaper

WELCOME HOME Create an inviting entrance with removable wallpaper

Removable wallpaper (or peel-andstick or temporary paper as it’s also known) is a paper with an adhesive backing that can be attached to walls without the need for paste or water activation to secure it in place. It is, essentially, a new and improved version of sticky-back vinyl which is marketed specifically for walls. It can be peeled off with very little effort and does not cause any damage. In other words, you are free to add a new dimension to your home without the consequence of permanence. A definite plus point is it often works out to be the same, if not slightly cheaper, than the traditional kind. This is because most iss cut to your own measurements. It’s best to order a few samples before you buy, and apply them to the wall to see how they look throughout the day. Ensure your wall is smooth, without any holes, cracks or bumps first. Repair, fill and sand down as need be. If you have recently painted your walls, wait at least

four weeks before applying. And if there is already wallpaper on the wall, that will need to be removed first. If you are applying this in the kitchen or bathroom, where there is more risk of humidity and water exposure, you may want to buy a removable paper with a glossy finish that can be wiped over with a damp cloth.

PAPER DREAMS With new developments in terms of design, there are now lots of styles, patterns and finishes of removable wallpaper

All the plants

Indoor plants are probably the best way to add character to a rented home. They are affordable, they bring the outside in and, frankly, you can never go wrong with a little greenery in your life. Plants are also great air cleansers, and you can’t have too many. Fact. Remember plants like daylight, and some need more than others. Read the label to see how tolerant a plant is to sun or shade and place it in your home with this in mind. Some of my favourites besides cacti and succulents are aloe vera, air plants, string of heartss and fiddle-leaf fig, as they require minimal care. And why not faux plantss? They have the advantage of not needing any daylight, so are a perfect choice for any dark corners or nooks. IV

floor show A rug acts like a visual anchor and helps to bring the elements of a room together

Top Tip Leftover carpet remnants can be professionally bound at your local carpet store to create a runner or rug.

Rugs and runners

Go on, admit it. You hate your rental flooring, and you’re fairly certain your landlord wouldn’t be willing to contribute to replacement costs. Rugs are going to have to be your solution for now. These are incredibly stylish, and they vary in pattern, colour, texture and, most importantly, size. You can cover an entire floor with a good area rug. Or, similarly, add in something a little smaller if it’s just to hide parts of your floor that is showing wear and tear. I love that rugs can be shuffled around, should you suddenly become a little bored with their placement. Layering rugs is a great way to introduce additional pattern and texture to a space. What’s more, because you’ll be using smaller rugs to layer up, it could be more cost-effective.

Expert advice C Cupboard love

OPEN DOOR Apply removable wallpaper or sticky-back vinyl to the shelves and insides of the drawers

Painted furniture

How do you transform a battered old cupboard – or even something flat-pack and basic – into something modern and lovable? Painting old wooden furniture will always be a controversial topic, especially when you are painting what others might deem to be something antique or valuable. My thoughts on this whole matter: you do you. It’s your house, your style, your item. If painting

There are lots of options when it comes to updating or improving inherited cupboards. Removing the doors will create openness and give your room a more modern look. All you need to do is unscrew the door hinges from the cabinet frames. You will need to put the doors back on before you leave the property – so make sure they are stored aw d way in a safe and dry place. I would reecommend only removing the doo ors om the top cabinets. That way, you fro u caan still store food cans and packets in the lower units. You could hang urtains on the lower cabinets – cu hoose a fun fabric for a new look. ch something will make you feel happier, then that is the only rationale that counts for anything. There are a million different furniture painting tutorials online, and sometimes it can feel a little overwhelming trying to decide which of them will work for you. Over the years, I have tried many methods and what works for me is priming before I paint and using a smooth paint roller then sealing with a clear polyurethane varnish or wax.

I’ve got a designer kitchen on a budget Sophia Hardy had big ideas for her kitchen, and she successfully achieved that high-end look for less

My room... My problem kitchen

I’m Sophia Hardy, a stayat-home mum and parttime blogger. I live with my husband Tom, and our two sons in a Georgian terrace house, in Lichfield.

How I made it work I started my home Instagram account @sophia.at.home in January last year and it was a massive inspiration. I soon started to save pictures of kitchens which were a similar size to ours and researched brands, which seemed to make the whole thing a lot easier.

A bit about me

The kitchen was about 30 years old and had seen better days. It was fine for a few years as we worked on other rooms in the house, but we knew the kitchen would be our final and most expensive room to renovate so we took our time planning it to make sure we got it right and give us enough time to save up.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Add wooden open shelving.

‘It’s my dream space, full of colour, pattern and personal touches’

‘I wasn’t keen on the idea of having cupboards on the walls and really liked the idea of having open shelves to display all my kitchen bits and bobs,’ says Sophia. ‘It does mean I have to keep things organised, but I love the fact we went for reclaimed timber shelves that really complement the navy units and wooden worktops.’

Opt for natural decoration. ‘I love plants and have a mix of real and faux ones around the whole house; I also like to introduce a bit of a rustic touch,’ says Sophia. ‘I’m a huge fan of the hanging baskets that are on the high street at the moment. I decided this one would look fab hung on the wall next to the back door.’

Style idea Be bold with your choice of tiles. ‘Instead of going with the popular brick layout of the tiles, we went for a herringbone pattern behind the cooking area, which Tom did himself,’ says Sophia. ‘I was worried it would look a bit odd on just one wall, but it worked really well and it meant we could keep the cost down as we didn’t need that many to fill the area.’ 92 LSQIWX]PIQEK GS YO

Navy units are perfect in a family kitchen as they hide any marks and they can be easily cleaned

The pitched roof is the making of the kitchen. It adds height, light and makes what potentially is a small space feel huge

Sophia used wooden upstands to match the worktops and complement the wooden shelves for a more streamlined effect

My experience… Our kitchen was one of those rooms that we’d had lots of ideas for. We initially thought about extending the back of the house for a bigger kitchen and dining area but we decided that the cost and work would outweigh the amount of space we’d actually gain so we opted for a full revamp of the existing space. My husband is brilliant at DIY, so he’s done most of the work on the house. The room had to be stripped back to bare brick, as plaster was falling off the walls and we wanted to do it all properly. We also pulled the ceiling down which left us with a lovely pitched roof with original beams. We did enlist the help of a local building company we’d used before as not having a kitchen is challenging especially with two small boys, so we knew we needed help to get this room done as quickly as possible. With Tom and the builder working together the kitchen took 35 days from stripping it back to bare brick to having a fully working kitchen! We knew we wanted navy kitchen cabinets and the handles we chose from Rowen & Wren finished off the look perfectly. The shelving Tom made himself and we ordered some industrial-style brackets from eBay. We fitted a new cooker and then added floor tiles. I couldn’t be happier with the results – it’s my dream space, full of colour, pattern and all the personal touches I could wish for.

Living room makeover Once enclosed and sporting a red ceiling, Laura’s living area is now open-plan, spacious, social and super-stylish

Style idea Curtains in the same shade as the frame, allow statement windows to be the focal point

The sofa was the starting point for our scheme Although frumpy and sporting some seriously dated décor, Laura Magee saw potential in her home

My room... My problem living room

Hi, I’m Laura Magee and I live with my husband, Jonathan, and cat, George, in a four-bedroom Victorian property in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

We had builders knock down the load-bearing wall to allow for an open-plan living and dining area, and we spent a lot of time painstakingly removing old décor. I had the specifics of our Art Decoinspired pink and blue scheme mapped out months ahead of time on Pinterest, so once the building work was complete it was just a case of filling the space with beautiful pieces.

A bit about me

When we moved in the two reception rooms were separated by a wall, and both felt compact and dated. We wanted a room with lots of space, which would require a fairly complicated restructure to remove a wall, and a more contemporary, luxe scheme.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Ask for plenty of recommendations. ‘Our biggest challenge was having the wall removed,’ says Laura. ‘We interviewed several builders and had varying quotes so it was hard to make a decision. It was a supporting wall and we needed a beam installed so we wanted a builder we could rely on. Eventually we went with someone recommended to us, and I’m so glad we did.’

Choose quality – don’t cut corners. Laura and Jonathan first opted for a colour-match paint by a brand with a lower price point to try to keep costs down. ‘We quickly realised we had made a mistake when the paint didn’t cover the walls very well, and decided to invest in the more expensive but better quality stuff instead,’ she says.

Measure up more than once. If you’re going to purchase pieces for your home before moving in, as Laura did, make sure you’re certain of its measurements. You’ll need to know room lengths, widths and heights, as well as individual wall specs, plus entry point measurements (including doorways and windows) to ensure you can get larger items in and out. 98 LSQIWX]PIQEK GS YO

‘I take inspiration from everything; friends and family, travel, magazines and my job as a fashion buyer’

The coving and windows are original features that Laura has taken extra care to preserve in order to retain a little of her home’s history while also making it suitable for modern living

Modern luxe meets Art Deco was Laura’s goal for her living-dining space

My experience… Style idea

An internal window allows light to seep between rooms, increasing the sense of space

Our living room renovation was a labour of love that involved knocking down a load-bearing wall to create an open-plan living and dining space, blocking up a doorway and stripping layers upon layers of wallpaper. The room was originally painted red – including the ceiling – and took over a week to paint after the builders had finished tearing down the wall and replastering. We also had to raise the plug sockets as they were too low once we fitted new skirting boards. Yet, despite all the complications, it was well worth the dust and hard work. The colour scheme had been decided long before work began and the emerald green velvet sofa, which was a must-have for me, was ordered before we even moved into the house. I suppose you could say that our living room scheme was built around it. I spent seemingly endless hours sourcing lighting, rugs and artwork to complement the scheme, and purchased most pieces before the painting was even finished. I was too excited to wait! We debated having the dining table in the kitchen, but eventually decided it would be a more sociable space if we had it in our open-plan living area. Poor Jonathan had to move it around the house until we found the ideal spot for it. We’re delighted with how our makeover turned out, and our family and friends love it too. They applaud us for altering the entire look of the house. Though that said, I get bored easily, so I reckon next year I’ll go for a complete colour overhaul!

Bedroom makeover The neon inspired print is something Ruth had made for Ben. It’s a cocktail bar in LA, which she found the image of and had it transferred onto canvas

I wanted a bedroom and bath with a view By adding another floor to her bungalow, Ruth Melton has the most amazing views from her modern bedroom and en suite

My room... My problem bedroom

I’m Ruth Melton. I work for the ambulance service. I live with my husband Ben, a firefighter, our daughter, Erin, and Ben’s son Rylee, in Brighton.

How I made it work Thankfully the loft space was large enough for us to extend up into to make a whole new floor, a bedroom for Erin, a spare room and of course our bedroom and en suite was the priority. The en suite would be built with a partition wall, but still feel part of the room.

Feature and styling Zoe Bishop Photos Lizzie Orme

A bit about me

The house is a two-bedroom bungalow, and although I loved the ground floor we wanted an upstairs space. Our current bedroom was fairly small and at the front of the house. I wanted a bedroom that was roomy and made the most of the stunning sea views.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Add a hidden dressing room. ‘I liked the idea of having everything hidden away, so we had very long walk-in wardrobes fitted behind two sets of double doors.’ Ben’s side has a rail and drawers, but Ruth decided to add a dressing table and shelving to use as a make-up area. The Ikea corner shelving holds all of Ruth’s lotions and potions and keeps everything tidy.

Go for bold with your tiles. Ruth wanted to add impact to the bathroom and was adamant they used hexagonal tiles to add a new dimension to the room. In keeping with the colour scheme, they chose black tile grout which really makes the pattern stand out. Consider finishing tiles at picture rail height to make more of a design feature.

Try a striking double sink. If you’re lucky enough to have a good sized en suite or bathroom, a double sink is ideal for couples or large families. This wall-hung version keeps the space light and airy, while the large pull-out drawers keep the clutter at bay. Why not try something different and introduce black taps for both the sink and bath? Ruth pulled the colours together with the large double mirrors. 104 LSQIWX]PIQEK GS YO

Ruth has layered up the bed with textured throws and cushions for a cosy winter feel

My experience…

Style idea

To add depth to the monochrome scheme, introduce a pastel shade

We moved here in February 2018, it was a beautiful two-bedroom bungalow, and while we loved it we knew we wanted to extend into the loft as a few other houses in the street had and we wanted to make the most of the stunning sea views. We met with architects straight away and then put the planning in for three extra bedrooms, one with en suite and a family bathroom. This meant raising the roof and building over the garage. Thankfully it was all approved and we started the renovation last summer. Ben did most of the work himself, with the help of a couple of firefighter colleagues who also work as carpenters. We built the new roof over the previous one then took down the old one once we were finished. We lived in the property while we renovated which was tough at times! We planned for our bedroom to be the largest space with the bed near the Velux window, walk-in wardrobes and then an en suite bathroom. I wanted it to be open-plan so I could relax in the bath and take in the views. I love Instagram for inspiration; it gave me the confidence to paint the bedhead wall black – something Ben wasn’t so keen on at first but it was the best thing we did! Now it’s complete I could sit in this room all day and just take in how hard we’ve worked to make our bedroom the place it is.

Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas Mark 7. Grease a small ovenproof dish. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling water for 10 mins until they're almost tender. Add the peas to and cook for 2-3 mins until tender. Drain well, return to the pan and mash roughly. Meanwhile, strip the leaves from two of the thyme sprigs and mash them together with 25g butter and the crushed garlic. Lay the fish in the dish and dot over the herb butter. Lay a lemon slice and a sprig of thyme on each and bake for 8-10 mins until cooked through. (To vary the flavourings used in the herb butter, try swapping the thyme for chives or dill, or adding some finely chopped chilli for a fiery kick.) While the fish is cooking, melt 15g butter in a large frying pan and cook the leeks for 5 mins until they are softened. Beat the leeks into the potato and divide the mash between two plates. Serve with the sea bream on top, drizzling around the buttery juices.

Delicious ideas Prep and cook time 50 MINS Serves 4-5 Ingredients 4 1 onion, diced 4 1 tbsp olive oil 4 400g can chopped tomatoes 4 1 clove garlic, crushed 4 1 tbsp vinegar 4 Small pinch of dried oregano (optional) 4 Small bunch of basil leaves 4 Salt 4 Pepper 4 2 cups grated firm mozzarella 4 90g almond meal 4 2 tbsp cream 4 35g psyllium husks 4 1 egg, whisked 4 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved 4 ½ ball (50g) mozzarella, sliced 4 100g prosciutto, salami or pepperoni (or sprinkle with pumpkin seeds for a veggie option) 4 Handful rocket leaves 4 Small bunch of basil leaves

Method

1

To make the sauce, cook the onion in the olive oil in a pot over a medium heat until soft. Add the tomatoes, garlic, vinegar and oregano. Bring to the boil and cook for 10 mins. Allow to cool slightly before adding the basil and blending with a hand-held blender or in a jug blender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper, and allow to cool. Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/ Gas Mark 6 with a baking sheet inside.

2

3

Place the mozzarella in a microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on high in 20 second bursts, stirring in between to ensure that it melts evenly. Place the almond meal, cream, psyllium husks and egg in a food processor. Scoop the melted mozzarella into the food processor, then pulse until it comes together into a doughy ball. Scrape out on to a sheet of non-stick baking paper, then place another sheet on top and roll out the pizza dough. Cover until required. To bake, carefully peel off the top sheet of paper and slide the dough and bottom sheet onto the hot baking sheet. Bake for 6-8 mins, to give the base a head-start. Remove from the oven and spoon on some of the pizza sauce, spreading it out evenly. Top with the cherry tomatoes then the mozzarella, and bake for 12-15 mins until the cheese is lightly golden. Scatter the pizza with the prosciutto, then scatter one half with rocket and the other half with basil. Cut into pieces and serve straight away.

Nicki Bamford-Bowes We speak to the interior designer about her signature style

How did your career begin?

For as long as I can remember I have been interiors obsessed. I spent a lot of my childhood rearranging my bedroom, and every student house I lived in I decorated to the max! While I was still working as a graphic designer I was asked to help with several residential projects following some recommendations. And after the birth of my third child my heart was just not in graphic design anymore, so I chose to make the leap and I haven’t looked back.

What is your typical day like?

Nicki often mixes vintage finds with contemporary pieces for a luxe eclectic style

First I see to my three lively kids! Then it could be anything from site visits with ongoing projects, sourcing items or meeting with suppliers or new clients. I have to be strict about the ratio of time I can spend away from my desk, but I like going to trade fairs and design shows when I can too.

Tell us something weird and wonderful about yourself?

I was a contestant on BBC2’s Interior Design Masters. I also used to be a disco dancing champion in my teens and Len Goodman was my dance teacher… long before the Strictly days!

How would you describe your style?

Bold, forward thinking and cool urban living. My aesthetic is chic and comfortable. I love creating beautifully designed spaces with a high-end luxury look – often with items that don’t cost the earth. With my design background, I also like to incorporate graphic shapes and elements into my work.

Who are you stalking on Instagram? I’m obsessed with design studios @notedesignstudio, @studioashby @flackstudio_ and @studiopepe_official

What is currently on your bedside table?

The book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is a really refreshing book for people with creative ambition. It’s about embracing and dealing with the stumbling blocks that can affect creativity.

Who would you swap homes with and why? A new account I have recently discovered via @mad_ about_the_house’s blog is @ormistonhousedesign. I love the before and afters, and Ciara is living my dream of restoring a country abode back to life.

What has been your proudest moment?

Buying a flat by myself in London in my twenties was a huge achievement. I saved so hard and loved every inch of that flat. Being selected from thousands of applicants to be part of a TV show was also pretty amazing.

What does this year have in store for you?

Currently I am working on some stunning residential projects, plus working with a property developer and overseeing some amazing new developments. Changing career took a heck of a lot of courage and I’m loving every step of this journey. Catch Interior Design Masters on BBC iPlayer. For more from Nicki, visit andthentheywentwild.co.uk
