COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Sarah Brooks, 39, a lawyer, and I live here with my husband Gareth, 40, also a lawyer, and our two children, Charlie, 11, Daisy, nine, and our dog Betsy. I have an interiors Instagram account @hearts_at_claremont OUR HOME A four-bed Edwardian semi in the Wirral Peninsula. We moved here in September 2015. WHEN WE MOVED IN The kitchen was split into two small rooms and the whole house felt really unloved. AND NOW Painting everything white has brightened the house and changing the kitchen layout means it now works perfectly for family life. STYLE TIP Do as much decorating yourself as you can. Painting a wall is actually really simple and it helps to keep labour costs down.

EMBRACES YOU!’ Twinkly lights combined with green foliage and lots of warm wood make Sarah’s festive home cosy and welcoming
B
efore moving here we lived in a Victorian maisonette, but when the children came along, slightly earlier than planned, we needed more space,’ says Sarah. ‘We wanted to find our dream home, but didn’t want to rush things, so we sold up and moved into a rental property until we could find somewhere that ticked all the boxes on our wish list. We wanted something Edwardian in style, classic and timeless, and with a decent-sized garden, and in the end it took a year of searching, with a few lost properties along the way. Luckily, we both fell in love with this house as soon as we set foot inside it. We loved the character and the original features, and it felt like a house that gave you a hug as soon as you walked in.
Good to go
COLOUR CODING
‘I change the accent shade in this room, depending on the time of year – at Christmas I like to add a few red accessories to pick out the red decorations on the tree’
The day we got the keys I started decorating, and the first few weeks were really exciting, though I have to say, the novelty soon wore off! All the fireplaces and cupboards were dark wood and the two front rooms had green carpet throughout, so it all looked dull and dingy. I immediately took down the chintzy curtains, but we wanted to live in the space and see how we used the rooms before properly deciding how to decorate, so I just freshened up the walls by painting them a neutral colour and gradually started decorating each room. I did really want to put my stamp on the house straight away though, so I painted the front door my favourite pale seaside blue colour, Farrow & Ball’s Parma Gray.

CHRISTMAS SPREAD
‘WHEN LIVING IN AN ALL -WHITE HOME STOCK UP ON STAIN REMOVER … AND DON’T BE TOO PRECIOUS!’ decorating and I also created moodboards for different rooms on Pinterest, so I knew what I wanted before we began any work. A white country kitchen was top of the list and I could see in my mind’s eye how it would look. As it’s a north-facing room, it needed to feel light, bright and airy. White quartz worktops, a chandelier and a range cooker were also on my wish list, which, so far, is the only room we’ve had to do any building work on. The room had been so gloomy, dark and damp, and was split to include a pantry, so I gave it a temporary update by painting the existing units and changing the doorknobs on the cupboards. I wanted to make it look more modern and fresh until we could afford to renovate the kitchen fully. It also

WIRE STAR WREATH
1 2
Wire stars are widely available – Hobbycraft stocks a good-value 45.5cm one for £5. Wind some battery-operated warm white fairy lights evenly around the whole of the wire frame, allowing the battery pack to finish at the side or top of the star, so that it will eventually be covered with foliage. Gather your mix of real or fake leaves. These can range from sprigs of eucalyptus to fir branches, holly, or any festive branches you prefer. Bind the foliage together at the top with some thin wire or garden twine, so that they will loosely drape down the side of the star, and then attach tightly to the wire frame with more twine, making sure that the battery pack is covered. Add any extra decorations, such as mini baubles, red berries, Christmas bells or small fir cones. Fix in place around the star using a glue gun, and then hang with a piece of twine.

20 | JANUARY 2020
‘THINK ABOUT USING STARS AND FAIRY LIGHTS ALL YEAR ROUND - THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS!’ meant I had time to shop around for the best prices for units and furniture without compromising on quality. We began a major refit in 2018 and the room was completely stripped back to the bricks. The electrics were redone and we reorganised the layout of the room.
Hard work
To keep costs down, we decided to live in the space while we did all the work, cooking on a camping stove and living on microwave meals and baked beans! I have to admit, it wasn’t much fun having a layer of dust covering
absolutely everything in the house, but the worst moment was when Betsy, our dog, managed to walk over the freshly-laid wet concrete floor, leaving paw prints everywhere! I quite quickly began to realise that you just have to try to let things go and just accept that your house will be messy while building work is going on.
The long game
We knocked out the original pantry to make the room a more regular rectangular shape and we blocked up the side door to make space for a range
SHELF LIFE
‘I always wanted white quartz worktops, but I’ve softened the white-on-white look with contrasting wooden accessories’
MODERN COUNTRY
‘A farmhouse-style kitchen was always on my wish list – these units, in Super White from Wren Kitchens, give the look a modern twist’
cooker. We then added a new door, which now leads straight out to the garden – but what we thought would be a simple job became more complicated! Our builder had to make new steps to the outside, and since these didn’t match the existing flagstones, we decided to completely redo the patio. Also, when we took out the original kitchen cupboards, various problems were quickly unearthed, which we had expected as it is such an old property. But how uneven the floor turned out to be was a major issue, which took a lot of work to get level, and much

WINTER WONDERLAND
‘Even the stairs get the Christmas treatment in our home. This garland with added fairy lights, from Inspirations Wholesale, adds to the look’
22 | JANUARY 2020
In order to keep the costs down, we decided that I would project-manage the renovation, which was really stressful while trying to juggle family life and my job as a solicitor, although we were lucky to have found a really great builder who was worth his weight in gold. We used him before for some smaller jobs, but he specialises in fitting kitchens and bathrooms, so having him on board took a lot of stress out of the build for me and I really did have a ‘wow’

MAKE A WHITE SCHEME WORK When choosing white paint, consider whether the room is north or south facing. Warm whites have a red or yellow base, while cooler whites have green or blue. If the room doesn’t have much light, go for a warmer shade – a sunlit room can afford a cooler shade for a fresh finish. Introduce texture or pattern with natural wood, tactile fabrics, chunky knits and woven cotton, and combine with fine stripes or simple two-tone prints. For a relaxed country look, pair with powdery accent colours such as linen, eucalyptus green, blush pink, dove or zinc grey. Combine with zingy shades for a bolder finish, or black accents to add a Scandi or industrial edge.

COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Sharon Lomas, 47, owner of interiors store Lomas & Lomas (lomasandlomas.co.uk), and I live with my husband Garry, 42, who runs a photography company. MY HOME A two-bed apartment within an Edwardian end terrace in Derbyshire. It’s above our store and we’ve been renting the whole place since June 2015. WHEN WE MOVED IN It was a bland rental painted pale grey or off-white. AND NOW After getting permission, we’ve gone for a black, white and grey scheme with splashes of green. STYLE TIP Shop your own home! My mum used to take the accessories from every room, put them on the table and then move them around. You feel like you’ve got something new, but haven’t spent any money.

W
hen I quit my job as an advertising manager for a magazine publisher in Manchester, it was the push I needed to set up my own interiors business in a lovely little Derbyshire village,’ says Sharon. ‘I’ve always been into interiors, and over the years I’ve taken a screen-printing course, taught myself to sew and completed a diploma in interior design. We quickly sold our house and decided to rent a cottage in Cheshire. ‘This meant we could focus on starting our own business and test the water at craft markets and interiors fairs. After a year we managed to find an empty shop with a maisonette above it, in Derbyshire. It was originally a butcher’s shop and the whole place was available to rent, so it seemed like we’d found the right place at the right time. Now we spend our days making candles and designing surface patterns for soft furnishings. The designs are all based on images taken from Garry’s photography and my paintings, which reflect the beautiful landscape and wildlife of the Peak District.
Personal touch
Our previous home was very traditionally decorated, so I was itching to find somewhere more contemporary where my things wouldn’t look lost. For the first few years we didn’t even think about decorating as we were setting up the business, but then we asked the landlord if we could paint the sitting room in charcoal grey and luckily he trusted us. A customer of mine had used Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball and I fell in love with its lovely depth of colour. It was my first foray into dark decor, and it wasn’t

HANGING FOLIAGE DISPLAY First, you’ll need a base for creating your hanging display. Sharon used an adjustable table hanger rack, £19.99, from Clas Ohlson, but you could try a thin café rod and attach it to the chimney breast. eucalyptus, ivy or sedum. Try Blooming Artificial, Evergreen Direct, Not on the High Street or Ikea. Amazon store Angel Lovely also has some artificial string of pearl hanging succulent trails that look just like Sharon’s, at £5.25 for two pieces. Mix things up a bit for the festive season by interspersing your faux trailing plants with baubles, hanging stars or Christmas cards.

‘TEAM GREEN WITH GOLD AT CHRISTMAS AND HAVE FAIRY LIGHTS EVERYWHERE FOR FULL-ON TWINKLE’ long before I went dark in the master bedroom and then the kitchen, too. I think paint is the cheapest and biggest dramatic change you can make to your home. It’s good for landlords too, as their tenants might stay longer if they can personalise their home. The worst that can happen is your landlord might ask you to paint it back to how it was when you leave.
A good fit
Although I already had the Ikea grey sofa and china cabinet, I’ve bought lots of new pieces to fit the space. But it’s a tight
squeeze to get furniture up the back stairs, which has definitely limited what I can choose. My favourite piece is a 1950s armchair, which I found on eBay. I then had it recovered in our own retro-inspired green Sparrow design. I love tracking down a good bargain, too, and my best buy is probably the trunk at the end of my sofa. I got two for only £6 and gave the other one to my best friend. It was tricky to find the right paint colour to work with the glass coloured splashbacks, but I eventually found the perfect shade called The Botanist

R ‘MIX AND MATCH GLASSWARE AND CROCKERY IN SIMILA SHADES OF GREEN FOR COHESIVE TABLE DRESSING’ by Paint & Paper Library. I’ve dressed my oak table in green crockery and items of Luminarc glassware from the 1970s that I came across on Etsy. The second bedroom was a tricky space to furnish. It’s long and thin, so better suited to having just a single bed, but we needed a double in there for when guests stay over. To begin with, we had a bed with no headboard pushed against the chimney breast, so you could walk all the way around. However, this solution wasn’t great for visitors as the pillows kept falling off and they weren’t sure which way round to sleep. So our next solution was to push the bed up against the window, which doesn’t look as good, but it’s much more practical.
Future plans As we’re renting we couldn’t change much in the bathroom either, but my dream look would be to have a freestanding roll-top bath with green

hexagonal floor tiles and an old cabinet upcycled into a vanity unit. If I owned the flat, I’d probably remove the electric fire in the living room and replace it with a log burner and a new surround, as well as putting down herringbone parquet flooring in the kitchen and living room to unify the space.
Evolving style I’m definitely a serial decorator and I would describe my style as contained maximalist. I’ve always loved black and white combinations, and the green element was inspired by the local landscape, which features lots of dry stone walls and boulders covered in moss and greenery. Green is also Garry’s favourite colour, which helps! It’s a far cry from our previous homes. My first place on my own – a Victorian conversion flat – was all white. Then we went berserk with colour in our first rented home together. It had an orange

These days I try to consider more what I buy and consume, so I’ll often see what I can move around and repurpose rather than just automatically buying new. I’m inspired by designers like Mini Moderns, Timorous Beasties and One Hundred Stars, and love visiting the Vintage Home Show and Newark Antiques & Collectors Fair, as well as independent shops like Object Style in Chorlton, Manchester. My top tip is to group objects in shades of one colour together, but mix the textures and finishes. My collection of vintage green glassware works well together as the pieces have different
shapes and textures. I think this creates a more interesting arrangement.
Festive highlights
As I’m slightly obsessed with green, most of my decorations have a green theme. I love to team green with gold at Christmas and have fairy lights everywhere. Normally we put the tree up two weeks before Christmas and Garry and I always open our presents from each other at midnight on Christmas Eve. Then on Christmas Day I like to take my time with the food prep in the morning, with music on and fizz open. Our families usually arrive around 1pm and out come the nibbles. We normally eat late

ADD STYLE TO A RENTAL Use 3M Command Strips to hang photos. Or display items on a picture ledge, which means only two holes to fill when you move out! Try vinyl tile stickers to create a patterned splashback. You might assume that painting or wallpapering isn’t allowed, but check with the landlord; they might welcome the refresh! Update lighting. A statement pendant can transform a space. Paint or wallpaper a large piece of foam board to add a panel of pattern or colour. I bought it in March 2017. WHEN I MOVED IN It was a brand new home, so I had the luxury of decorating it to my own taste, which was exactly what I was after. I loved being able to put my own stamp on the house by styling each room with different ideas. fter 11 years of renting in London, I was ready to move back home to Norfolk to live closer to my family. Although I loved my city life, I really missed them and I was keen to buy a home of my own,’ says Stacey. ‘I’ve always been attracted to the idea of owning a new-build property so that I could design it from scratch and inject my own style into it. So when this house came on the market, it was perfect! It’s close to both my family and the city centre, and the picturesque Norfolk Broads are only a short drive away.

PADDED FOOTSTOOL
‘I really wanted a footstool but they can be pricey. I hunted around and found this one on eBay for £200’
When I first viewed this house, it was still a building site. It was only a shell with lots of mud outside and no boundaries in place, so the on-site sales manager had to point out where the rooms would be. My main concern was that with new-build properties the rooms can sometimes be a bit small, but standing inside the shell I could already tell that the rooms were going to be a generous size. What I loved most was that both bedrooms could easily fit in a double bed, with plenty of space left for wardrobes and a dressing table. There was a good sized bathroom upstairs, and the hallway space was also very generous. I studied the floor plans in great detail to make sure all my existing furniture would be able to fit easily.
Pick of the crop As I had put down a deposit on the house during the planning stages, I had the freedom to choose my preferred fixtures and fittings from the developers’ collection. This included the

It was a dream come true for me. I could design my home to look exactly how I pictured it. I’m a very decisive person and when it came to picking out the details, I chose everything within a few minutes. The sales manager was a bit taken aback, but in my head, I had already built a picture of how I wanted my home to look in every detail,
so it came easily to me. I chose a Shaker-style kitchen design and white tiles to make the space feel lovely and bright. For the flooring, I went with carpet upstairs to keep it cosy and a woodeffect vinyl downstairs as the builders couldn’t offer laminate or real wood flooring. Keep it calm When it came to decorating, I could select one single shade for every wall in the home. Choosing a colour was a no brainer for me – I went for a classic white shade in every room, deciding to work in colour with the furnishings and accessories, rather than on the walls. When I got the keys on moving day, I walked into a freshly decorated home that was brand new from top-to-bottom with many elements that I’d been able to handpick myself – that’s what’s so great about buying a new build. My first focus was to organise and unpack the living room and the main bedroom, as they are the two rooms I spend the most time in. HOMEMADE DECS
‘Buying different homeware for every season can be expensive, but it’s also fun to have a go at making your own’
52 | JANUARY 2020
I’m a winter girl at heart so I love getting my home ready for the festive season. For me, there’s nothing better than getting cosy in the evenings snuggled up under a blanket with my favourite scented candles lit and mug of a hot chocolate warming my hands. I’m very close to my family so Christmas is always a really big celebration for us. I love spending time with my nieces and nephews and hosting Christmas gatherings for everybody at my house. Having an excuse to bring out all of my seasonal decor and add all the extra little wintery touches to the dinner table is wonderful. Plus, picking out thoughtful gifts for everyone makes me so happy – Christmas is definitely the best time of year!’

They will really stand out against deep grey and natural wood. KEEP YOUR GUESTS COSY Layer faux-fur and sheepskin blankets over seats – perfect for staying snug on winter evenings.

COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Darren Peskett, 53, and I sell antique furniture and vintage pieces at my shop, Reginald Ballum. I live in a three-bedroom Victorian house in West Sussex, which I bought in May 2009. MY CHALLENGE The whole house needed gutting and renovating. The plumbing and electrics were poor, and the kitchen was old and rickety, with a loo in the corner. The dining room was a separate, adjoining space with an ugly, dated fireplace. MY WISH LIST I wanted to open up the space and make a one-off kitchen-diner. I wanted a unique design, mixing rustic and industrial with quirky pieces and aged colours.

T
his house needed a complete refurbishment but, as I used to be in the building trade, I knew I could handle most of the work myself,’ says Darren. ‘I knocked the dining room and kitchen through, replastered the walls and sorted out the plumbing and wiring. After that, I made do with what I had, while I focused on the rest of the house. My kitchen plans didn’t go completely on the back burner though, and I picked up pieces from markets in Europe and Sussex, and kept them in storage until I was ready to put my ideas into action.
First moves
IDEA TO STEAL
‘Underfloor heating provides even warmth throughout the room and frees up wall space where radiators would goÕ
With the two rooms knocked together, I started by fitting trifold doors at the far end, which open on to the garden. Next, I levelled the floor, ready to install underfloor heating, with sandstone flags on top. That all took about a week. Over the next three weeks or so, I built the kitchen from a mixture of new timber and upcycled furniture sourced in the UK and in France. It can be tricky to adapt existing pieces, but it allowed me to get a bespoke look without paying a fortune. I’d already decided on a simple layout, with the sink under the window. I definitely didn’t want to have two rows of units facing each other, so I added peninsular counters at right angles to the main runs. They break up the line of vision so that, instead of looking straight out into the garden and missing the kitchen, your eyes move around the room.
Personal style
My style is ‘quirky industrial’ with some farmhouse elements, too, and I love old pieces that can reveal their history. One of my favourite items is the

‘I searched for vintage tiles but couldn’t find what I wanted. These new metro tiles work just as well ‘
Update units with paint – chalk paint, cupboard paint, eggshell, satinwood or gloss will all work, depending on the finish you want. Swap old handles for ceramic, metallic, wood or leather ones. Add salvage-style character by adding freestanding reclaimed larders, storage cabinets, dressers or a butchers block. Rethink counter top materials. Try concrete, zinc or copper, or tops made from scaffold boards or reclaimed wood. Replace doors – try Plykea, Husk, Superfront or Reform for designs to fit Ikea units. Along with task lighting, try different styles such as a chandelier or statement pendant.

ALL CHANGE
‘The dining area was originally a separate room, with a single door leading into the kitchen’
reclaimed glass-fronted wall cabinet. It originally came from Hungary, and it’s still got its original paint, which inspired the soft, grey-green colour of the walls. I painted the dining table legs grey to tone with the grey of the French shelving unit. The worktops are zinc, which I aged myself over a period of about two weeks, and I added some rivets along the edges for an industrial feel. Although I’d prefer to use salvaged pieces, they don’t always work out, and it’s important to know when you should compromise and invest in something new that works smoothly or better suits your space. I originally fitted an antique range in the fireplace but it filled the room with smoke and I couldn’t find replacement parts. I had to be realistic and go for the

Final touches
Offbeat, rustic accessories and unusual found objects are just my cup of tea, and I’ve added quite a few. There’s an old, metal tractor seat, oil cans, vintage advertising signs, and stools made from old milk churns. I’ve got an antique mangle in the corner, and the blinds are made from recycled postal sacks. So many people asked me to find similar pieces that I opened a shop where I sell reclaimed items. Tracking down what I wanted was quite a lot of hard work, but I took my time and didn’t compromise. I’ve ended up with a unique kitchen that didn’t break the bank, and I love it.’

UNDERFLOOR HEATING
Darren’s choice:
UNDERFLOOR HEATING After radiator-free walls? Here’s how to select sub-floor heating for your home
What types are there? Electric or ‘dry’ systems involve a series of electric wires, often contained in a heat mat or cabling system, installed beneath or within your flooring. Water-based heating, or a ‘wet system’, comprises of a series of pipes that are connected to your boiler and concealed under the floor – the circulating warm water heats the room.
Which one is best for me? Dry systems are more affordable and less disruptive to install, but their running costs are higher, so they are suited to

smaller areas, such as tiled bathrooms. Wet systems are more costly and disruptive, especially if a floor level alteration is required in order to accommodate the pipes, but they tend to be more cost effective and suit larger areas or multiple rooms.
Can I pair it with any type of floor covering? Tile and stone are the best types of flooring to use with underfloor heating, as they heat up the floor more quickly, give more heat output and run more efficiently. Other types of coverings, including wood, laminate, carpet and vinyl, can be used, though they may be less efficient at transferring the heat. Seek professional advice to help you calculate the amount of heat you’ll need to generate, remembering to take into account any heat loss from your choice of floor covering.

Is the air circulation better than radiators? Since heat continuously rises up through the room, the air flow from underfloor heating is much cleaner and often has a more pleasant, ambient feel. Radiators, on the other hand, circulate the same air and heat throughout the room, often giving off a stale and stuffy feeling.

COME ON IN!
ABOUT ME I’m Lu Fitoussi-Findlay, 37, director of interior design studio, Plaster Fever. I live here with my husband Raphael, 33, a property manager, our French bulldog, Tank, and cat, Dolly. We moved into this four-bed Victorian terrace in southeast London in June 2018, ready to renovate. THE CHALLENGE I was really keen to have an en-suite bathroom, and the box room adjacent to the main bedroom seemed the perfect fit. MY WISH LIST A lovely big walk-in shower, some stunning floor tiles that would really stand out, a retro vanity unit made out of an old piece of furniture, and plenty of light and space.

‘I wanted an en suite that was practical with a powerful shower, but at the same time light, fun and interesting without going overboard on colour’
Redesigning the layout of the neglected house Lu and her husband had taken on gave her the opportunity to make space for the en suite she had always wanted
E
ager to stay in the same expensive area of southeast London, but hoping to upgrade from a maisonette to a house,’ says Lu, ‘we had to take on a massive project. The whole house genuinely hadn’t been touched for who knows how many years. It wasn’t just a doer upper – it was a complete wreck. People thought we were mad to buy it (even the estate agent seemed unsure!), but for us it was a way of getting a substantial house in our preferred area. The only existing bathroom was tiny with a stained bath, a rotten window and grubby dark green tiles from floor to ceiling. I’d always wanted an en suite, and as everything was going to be changed or ripped out anyway, it made sense to add one. We’d already chosen a big bedroom at the front of the house to be ours, and there was a box room next to it, which the builders agreed would fit the bill.

Once we had a bare plastered room we had to decide where everything should go. A large shower made sense as we don’t have baths that often and we have a bath in the main bathroom. With the window facing onto the main street, the shower had to go on the opposite side of the room, against the back wall. Once we’d got the shower in place, the sink and toilet were easy to fit in.

fought hard for them. My husband Raphael wasn’t keen but I wore him down! We wanted to keep the walls plain because of the busy floor, so we went for white Penny tiles that still added texture. I was also determined to add a vintage element so was happy when we found the old washstand. We just painted it, then fitted the marble top and pink basin.
FEATURE STEPHANIE SMITH, MICHELA COLLING PHOTOGRAPHS DAVID GILES
Colour scheme
Because I’d fallen for the floor tiles, which were basically pink and white, and we’d gone for a pink washbasin, Raphael was worried things were getting a bit girly, so in order to make everyone happy we added the black taps and accessories and also the black edging to the tile pattern. Once we got everything in he decided he loved it, too! The one thing we had a real problem with though was the basin. We went through two pink concrete washbasins as they both cracked after a week. It was so frustrating as the bathroom had finally been finished and we were so keen to start using it. The third one is ceramic and is still going strong! When it comes to bathrooms you’re going to spend a lot of time in, I really feel you should spend the money on the things that you truly love. You can find cheap anything – from taps to sinks and tiles – and equally you can spend a fortune on them all, too. We found balance by spending big on the things we loved and saving on the rest.’

A BESPOKE VANITY UNIT
Lu’s choice:
A BESPOKE VANITY UNIT Give an old piece of furniture a new lease of life with some clever upcycling
Can I use any unit? The first rule is to choose something solid and sturdy that will support the weight of the basin – remember that it’ll be heavier once it’s filled with water. Consoles, dressing tables and desks all make great bases – or consider a sideboard, cupboard or chest of drawers if you could use the extra storage. Just make sure the dimensions of your chosen piece work with the size of your bathroom and that you’ll have adequate countertop space.
Which style of basin should I go for? The easiest option if you’re adapting your own piece of furniture is to go for a countertop basin or bowl (like Lu has done) which simply sits on top of the vanity unit. You’ll just need to make some cut outs in the countertop to allow for the waste and taps.
What about the plumbing work? If you’re using a table for your vanity base, meaning the pipework will be exposed, it’s worth choosing a more decorative option for the pipes. Think chrome or copper, rather than standard white plastic tubing. This won’t matter if the pipework is going to be hidden away in a cupboard, but bear in mind that you will have to sacrifice some of your storage space to allow for the plumbing work and,
94 | JANUARY 2020
if your unit has drawers, you may have to rework the drawer sizes.
What kind of tap will I need? Countertop basins are best paired with either wall-mounted taps (positioned on the wall just above the basin) or tall basin taps (extra high to allow for the height of the bowl and positioned centrally or to the side). However, some designs do incorporate taps or tap holes into the basin itself.
What height should the vanity unit be? As a general rule, the top of the basin should sit around 30-36in from the floor, so you may need to make some height adjustments if you’re adapting your own piece – or maybe consider wall mounting it instead.

FREESTANDING VANITY UNITS HIDDEN HELPER
Bathroom vanity unit with storage, £190, La Redoute
How should I protect the countertop? Water will damage wooden surfaces, however careful you are, so apply several coats of marine-grade varnish to give wood an extra-protective seal. Alternatively, consider tiling the surface or replacing the countertop altogether with a chic slab of marble, like Lu has.

Clean your
After having worked overtime at Christmas, it’s time to give your oven and hob the deep clean they deserve
OVEN & HOB Bring your cooker back to its shiny, pre-Christmas cooking glory
1
START WITH THE OVEN
If you’re not blessed with a pyrolytic (self-cleaning) oven, or if you don’t clean yours regularly, your best bet is to use a specialist product containing sealable cleaning bags for oven racks, to remove all the burnt-on grime and dirt. Follow the instructions on the packet, scrubbing the oven cavity and ideally leaving it overnight to allow the chemical cleaner to work its magic. Next, remove the shelves from the bags and wipe away any cleaning residue from the cavity and shelves, before giving it a final wipe down with clean water. Don’t forget to wipe down the seals around the door, too. Let the oven air dry, then replace the shelves, and close the door. Clean, rinse and dry the door, giving it a spritz with an equal mix of vinegar and water for a shine.
2
Wipe any food debris off the surface of your hob (if you have a gas hob, remove the pan supports and rings first). Apply warm soapy water or, better still, a specialist hob cleaner to the surface and let it soak in for a few minutes to soften any dried-on food. Use water sparingly on a gas hob, as too much may damage the burners. Wipe off the suds or cleaning fluid using warm water and a microfibre cloth. Don’t use a scrubber or scourer, as they’ll leave marks, especially on a glass or ceramic surface. Soak gas rings and pan supports in warm, soapy water. Scrub clean, using the same cloth, rinse and dry before replacing.
3
CLEAN THE DIALS
If your oven and hob feature raised dials, knobs or buttons, give these a good clean, too, taking care not to saturate them in water, as this could affect their performance. Buff them with a dry cloth.

Start by wrapping the gifts – plain paper works best to highlight the designs. To make the wreath design, cut small leaf shapes from the green paper. Draw a circle on your wrapped gift as a guide, then begin to glue paper leaves over the pencil line, overlapping the shapes. Work from the top of the wreath to the bottom, then start at the top on the other side so all the leaves face downwards. Once dry, tie a red ribbon into a bow, then glue at the top of the wreath. Experiment with different-sized leaves and ribbons to create varied designs.

1 104 | JANUARY 2020
Spray paint the rectangular papier-mâché boxes white in a
well-ventilated area and leave to dry. Paint two of the square boxes red and two yellow. Once dry, tie each rectangular box with gingham or red ribbon, cutting the ends to a 45-degree point. Tie the square boxes with contrasting ribbons. Arrange the boxes to form a circle, as pictured. Glue them together to form a wreath shape. Trim the square boxes with buttons and holly leaves. Decide where the top of your wreath will be and thread through a ribbon for hanging.

TRY YOUR HAND AT... MODERN EMBROIDERY
Embroidery is finding its way back into homes as modern makers reclaim this traditional craft. The stitches are the same, from simple backstitch to trickier French knots, but stitchers are swapping napkins and doilies for intricately embellished stationery and vibrant wall art. All you need is a needle and embroidery thread to get started, while an embroidery hoop will keep your fabric taut and can even be used to frame your finished art. Try a kit or sampler first to build confidence.
