MAGAZINE THE POWER OF READERSHIP MAGAZINES! up by 0.9 crores - IRS Q1 2019 AS THE SUPERHERO All media is growing, and Print continues to grow despite the general belief that Print is declining. Readership is largely influenced by two things - literacy level and your disposable income. If you have money, then only will you buy a newspaper. Luckily in India, both those things have moved upwards. Ashish Bhasin, CEO - Greater South and Chairman & CEO - India, Dentsu Aegis Network and Chairman, MRUC I am very happy that Print is growing across all languages, and that Print titles in Digital are doing well too. The Print industry in India is still robust and effective, unlike in the Western world. Shashi Sinha, CEO, IPG Mediabrands, India What is disappointing is the fact that niche publications that serve an important segment have consistently been ignored. A different methodology must be used to ensure correct findings for such publications, but sadly both Neilsen and the MRUC Technical Committee have so far not done this. Hormusji Cama, CEO, Mumbai Samachar I am happy to see that Print numbers are growing because it also proves the point that everything is not wrong with Print, and Digital is not the only way to go forward. It justifies the argument that Print has an established sort of acceptance. Indranil Roy, CEO, Outlook Group
PRINT IS GROWING No. of additional readers added since IRS 2017 Dailies - 1.8 crores Magazines - 0.9 crores Total number of Print Readers - 42.5 crores
Magazine Advertising actually works! INCREASE WITH 38 MILLION NEW READERS.
Editor,s Note I hope you are all excited about the year-end celebrations. As we step into 2020, I wanted to share hearty New Year’s wishes from everyone here at TIHG. As I have been using this platform for the last three years, I am surely not going to use this space anymore for writing resolutions. But I would once again like to repeat that you will be much happier, if you are able to set a goal that you know you are likely to meet and then actually nail it!
On the cover
This time while re-doing my home, I found a side of the cupboard that was loaded with books and charms that my partner must have collected while he was growing up. I can’t put it in words about how each piece was telling a story, about his childhood and how attached (read emotional) he was to his childhood. So keeping this in mind, I decided that my biggest resolution the coming year will be “Enjoy the little things” and “Value your dear ones more than ever.” Coming back to this issue, we have tried to cover trends and decor tips that are going to dominate the year 2020. From adding greens that is the must-have trend to prints like polka dots, tropical, and weaved designs to zebra patterns in decor, we have got in touch with global designers to reveal e secrets
“No one can ever take your memories from you – each day is a new beginning, make good memories every day.” ~ Catherine Pulsifer On the cover is the snazzy, eclectic home of Alex Pall of the famous duo “The Chainsmokers” done by designer Peti Lau, which we are covering in the first issue of 2020! A brash mixture of decades, colours and the owners’s growing contemporary art collection which creates an unusual mood and theme of the entire house, somehow holding everything together. Await for the January issue to get all the details and visuals of this eclectic home! 18 | December 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

Kaunteya presents the Byah collection. This is the Phad painting art, a 700-year-old legacy from Rajasthan, which represents the extensive rituals of an Indian wedding. Carefully selected are black and gold - the colour black signifying mystery, while gold signifying wisdom. Quite a lot like a marriage, which is a mysterious journey of finding each other; trying to know each other’s soul, making errors and eventually gaining wisdom in the form of eternal love. This series is tru uly majestic. With the design credo of old-meets new comes Address Home’s latest dining collection - naqashi, which is inspired by Mughul arches and central Asian designs of marble inlay work and other intricate crafts. The dinner set carries a floral jaal, which is outlined by 24 carat gold decal, the design on the outer rim as well as the dinner plate is all inspired by arches, thus making this collection another regal addition to your cabinets.

The MetroChic collection from Villeroy & Boch stands for timeless elegance. The geometric decoration brings the classic colours of black and gold onto pure white porcelain, its varying compositions lending an individual touch. Combining the individual pieces together creates an exciting set – constantly changing and always a statement of style and design. Round shapes harmonise with clear, cylindrical contours, deep black lines with fine splashes of gold. The pure white premium bone porcelain features a glossy sheen and a fine thickness, which gives the stylish service its lightness and translucency. tihG

Integration and elegance define the project for this solid 500m2 apartment in SĂŁo Paulo. The owners, gave carte blanche to Diego Revollo, the interior designer, for the complete overhaul of the 35 year old apartment so that the new plan would not only fit the couple’s needs, but bring the property to the present time. With Mediterranean architecture, one of the hallmarks of the buildings developed by a construction company in the ‘80s, the original slab shape already had curved elements not only in the outer walls, but also in the openings of the facade spans, which became the main inspiration for the project. Starting from this main feature, the designer took advantage of the rounded elements of architecture and brought to the reformulated floor plan, integrated spaces marked by the flow of curves, both for the new layout and for the entire interior architecture project. The spaciousness of the environments is one of the most striking features, and with few but striking furnishings, the mix of styles and

periods is the greatest asset of the interior design project. In a precise operation and with very careful dosage, the interior designer, in the same environment, has added, to contemporary furniture, pieces of different styles and periods such as the French Neoclassical, Vintage, and Brazilian modern furniture. The living room showcases Oscar Niemeyer’s “Alta” Armchair, an icon of Brazilian modernist furniture, coexisting in harmony with the antique Louis XV France 19th century armchair. Shades of light beige and beige, next to the wood, guarantee a visual unity of the social area, but it is the careful and rich mix of special decoration pieces, from different periods and origins, that bring not only beauty, but also a unique character to the project. tihG

Kelly Hoppen My prediction for trends for 2020 is ‘less is more’. But this time, the less is more about sustainability in the home. Therefore, choices should become much more considerate. As for colours – neutrals being used as the base is still very prominent. However, pops of colour like Ochre yellow and deep Monroe red, combined with every shade of grey, are becoming extremely popular. On top of this, bold patterns are being used as one off pops! Another trend for next year will be tweeds, like Harris tweeds in bright colours - this will be huge.

Diego Revollo If in 2019 curved furniture reigned mainly in sofas and armchairs we can certainly claim that by 2020 more fluid curves and lines will appear more and more in interior architecture as well. Anyone like me, who follows the international scene, already welcomes the end of straight lines in woodwork details, going to the coatings and reaching the walls themselves. Spaces with “half arc” or “half circumference” that refer to the “art deco” or even the fluidity of less rigid curves that give even more futuristic air to our homes are notably one of the characteristics of the internal structure of spaces for years to come.

Prateek Jain & Gautam Seth The trends for 2020 are all focused heavily on natural materials, creating pieces that have been inspired by nature and use the elements as such. Wood bead chandeliers and basket pendants are really in right now. They tie in again with the use of natural materials, having ethnic looking products is all the phase. The 1970’s geometric shapes and patterns will make a huge comeback in 2020, they already have! Also, really strong shapes paired with simplicity and clean edges and uncluttered spaces.

Use of natural materials - being mindful of the environment. Less wastage as well as being aware of where materials are coming from and using more locally sourced. Use of lighter fabrics like linens. The resurgence of antique pieces within a minimal interior. Sourcing one off pieces that are vintage bring about a personal character to a space giving it some history as well.

The Canopy Collection comprises four rocking chairs and two screens that can be used in both commercial and domestic settings. The simple, modernist steel structures provide a “blank canvas” for the parachute material, allowing the textile to be the most expressive element of each piece. The fabric has been wrapped, slung and hung within and around the framework to create padding, webbing and cover solutions with simple fixation points. The two teams worked closely together to develop a furniture collection that celebrates innovative thinking from both the industrial design and fashion worlds.

The types of materials that he chooses normally end up in landfills, but for him it becomes works that entertain the concept. He redesigns products that have a further application once their original use is concluded. Ptolemy carefully selects elements within the materials in order to utilise their shape and character – the used pieces add a life that is very different from a totally controlled medium. The artist hopes that his work outlasts the factory processes that originally created the material.

Started off from the chilhood game during the innocent days and that has been lost to the greed of adultery in our society. The ants signify the beast amongst the simplicity of the “X’s” (pun intended) and the “O’s”. Hence Infidelity.

The walls can even tell a story. By using different tools and objects, a drama can be created which looks surreal. An ode to a sincere, only slightly silly belief that impossible is never too far out of reach.

The interiors of the living have white walls with yellow stone used on the flooring, which is complimented with the rustic wooden furniture and fabric sofa sets, modern art paintings on walls, unique art pieces in jute and wood, creating a rejuvenating and warm space and thus the colour palette enhances the interiors.
In the heart of the concrete jungle of Gurugram lies a warm, vibrant, and creatively designed peaceful home by Ar Nilanjan Bhowal. The apartment, which is owned by a family of three - father, mother and daughter, situated in Nirvana County is conceived as a blend of finished materials with raw and rustic textures in furniture and upholstery. “The client’s requirements was to create a spacious and full of light apartment that would provide a response to their needs. The guidelines were to create a modern and lively design that balances beauty and functionality,” explains Nilanjan. That is what the architect aimed to achieve by designing the spaces keeping in mind to give a natural look with earthy, natural colours and spashes of ochre and rust
along with artworks on walls. The earthly colour combination creates a pleasing and welcoming environment. Imparting a distinct identity to this 4,000 sqft duplex is a centrally located open staircase, which gives a structured beauty and welcomes inhabitants in the house. “It was very interesting and challenging to create a staircase, which opened up acting like a screen or skin knitting the spaces together,” the architect shares. The home is a rich concoction of a varying palette of colours and materials. The interiors of the house follows an Earthy rustic theme. The colours used on fabrics and walls are given a break and twist with pop of colours on feature walls and in paintings and upholstery. The design attempts to use old furniture pieces by refurnishing them in order to blend with the entire theme of the house.
The addition and alternation in the form of wider treads with subtle lighting makes the staircase welcoming. It stands out in the form of its railing, which is designed as suspended cables and the stone which highlights the staircase against the plain white walls. undergoes variation ranging from rustic wood, jute, fabric and stone in flooring, furniture, art pieces etc., to modern and sleek metal in frames, artefacts, chairs, staircase railing, etc.The house has an entrance lobby, which extends into the living room, which has been further expanded and opened up to an outdoor sit-out space. The kitchen located behind the staircase is followed by the dining space, which also looks onto the outdoor sit-out, while creating an internal connection with the living room. The living room has been designed with use of subtle colours on fabrics, and the wall are highlighted with pop of colour like ochre along with painting and upholstery. Going past that the ground floor also has a bedroom and servant room. The upper floor branches out into two bedrooms and a lounge, as one walks up the staircase. The bedrooms on the upper floor exhibit a subdued colour scheme with primarily white walls and furniture with contrasting colours on upholstery. The two bedrooms located on either side of the staircase share a large common terrace with outdoor furniture and landscape elements enlivening the space. With the extraordinary amount of daylight, outdoor space and the pops of colour in the home, this three bedroom apartment’s design creates a vibrant and lively atmosphere. tIhG

Breathe in, Breathe easy With the news headlines warning everyone of the perils of the hazardous air quality and suggesting to remain indoors, here’s Barun Aggarwal of BreatheEasy Consultants opening our eyes with some reality check!
Barun Aggarwal CEO, BreatheEasy Consultants Before we start on how to choose the right air purifier, let us examine the main pollutants that we must deal with in our living spaces… • Particulate Matter (PM2.5) – very small particles in the air that are invisible that go deep into our lungs and sometimes into our bloodstream and cause harm to the entire human body; A class 1 carcinogen as per WHO; The smaller the particle, the more harmful it is. • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – a gas that is all around us, but in closed indoor spaces, the concentration tends to go well above the recommended safe limits; Has an impact on health and productivity. • Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC’s) – Over 1200 VOC’s around us and some of them can be carcinogenic; They are emitted from sources inside our homes – paint, furniture, cleaning liquids, deodorant,
104 | December 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden
mosquito repellant, etc; Start with source control and then look at ways to reduce/eliminate this pollutant from the indoors. All three of the above pollutants are harmful to human health in some way or another. There are other pollutants like NOx, SOx, H2S, O3, etc that may be found outdoors. And if there is a problem with any of these gases, in the outdoor environment close to your living space, then, you need to call in the heavy artillery to fix the problem – you don’t want any of these indoors. Now, we start our quest to find an air purifier that can eliminate the three most commonly found pollutants. At a high level, there are two kinds of air purifiers – active filtration and passive filtration. Active filtration is a newer technology, is less effective, especially over a period of time and can sometimes be harmful as it emits Ozone as a by-product.
Feature Passive filtration is tried and tested technology that blocks pollutants from going through, thereby cleaning the air that passes through the passive filter. Most air purifiers in the market claim that they are able to filter 99 per cent plus of harmful PM and TVOC’s from the air. There are some “truth” and some “untruth” to this statement. Most machines that have a somewhat reasonable HEPA filter (High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestor – they come in various grades F7-GF10 and H11-H14 being the most common – higher the number, better the filtration) will be able to stop particles going through – depending on the grade of the filter. The term HEPA is used quite loosely also. Just a pleated filter is NOT a HEPA filter. Also, the way the filter fits in the machine is very important to ensure that there are NO leaks from the sides of the filters, thereby making the filter less effective – at the end of the day, the air is going to take the path of least resistance. So depending on the quality of filter and fit, they will stop some level of PM2.5. Another thing to look out for is the total surface area of the HEPA filter. This will tell you how long the filter will last. Most machines on the market have a very small/flimsy filter thereby rendering the life of the filter very short. The second claim of removing TVOC’s is the bigger “untruth” with the most common air purifiers on the market. TVOC’s are found indoors and most machines have a simple carbon filter with no more than 20-50 grams of active carbon to absorb odours. They are NOT capable of removing TVOC’s like formaldehyde from the air. You need a heavy-duty active carbon filter that is impregnated with KMNO4 (Pottasium permanganate) that will absorb VOC’s and various other harmful gases. Ideally, one must start with source control, use less of the items that cause these pollutants indoors and live a clutter-free life. The third pollutant indoors is CO2. When we look at any recirculating air purifier (and pretty much most are recirculating) we find that they are completely unable to target the CO2 problem in a room. When we sleep in a room with our windows and doors shut (and today’s windows and doors are well sealed), the air exchange with the outdoors is minimal. The air conditioner is just recirculating the air
indoors and cooling it. And beware of air conditioners being sold as “air purifiers” – most of them are NOT! This leads to very high levels of CO2 indoors as humans breathe out CO2 and breathe in oxygen. We have measured CO2 levels in a room with two people sleeping at over 2,500 parts per million. And a recent Harvard Medical School study says that anything over 800 ppm is not good for us and leads to lower cognitive function. There is NOT a single machine readily available in the market that can take care of this problem EXCEPT the IQAir from Switzerland. The IQAir can be fitted with an optional ducting accessory that brings in “fresh air” from outside (or even from a room next door) that not only dilutes the CO2 levels in the room where the machine is installed, it also dilutes the TVOC’s and most importantly, it pressurises the room such that no dirty air can now enter the room, as clean air is slowly leaking out due to the constant pressurisation. This also ensures that PM levels get close to zero micrograms per cubic meter of air. If today there is a technology to clean the air we breathe, there is no reason for us not to utilise it. Those who can afford it, choose to leave polluted cities and move to cleaner, greener places. But not all of us have that option. Most of us don’t even feel the effect of air pollution until 70 per cent of our lungs get damaged. That is because we only really need just 30 per cent of our lungs for our day to day life, except for those into extreme sports! Often, it is only when more than half your lungs stop working, do you realise how drastic the situation is. Do you really want to take that chance? Today, science and R&D have given us a chance to protect our lungs for eighteen to twenty hours a day. We have found the perfect solution with the IQAir machine from Switzerland to give us perfect air indoors in some of the most polluted cities of the world. Grab that opportunity and add many more years to your life.
