The font Futura was created in 1927 by Paul Renner. Renner is said to have been sceptical of many forms of abstract expression including jazz music, films and dancing, yet looked favorably upon modernism as an artistic era. This font was his attempt to bridge the space between the nineteenth century and the twentieth, the traditional and the modern. It was his hybrid of gothic- and roman-style typefaces. Renner wrote two design books about good design, Typography as Art and The Art of Typography. He also published some
political works voicing his opposition to the Nazi’s including a book called Cultural Bolshevism?. Renner is credited with two other typefaces as well. Architype Renner, inspired by his exploration of geometric letterforms, and Tasse, which was released in 1994 as a revival of his 1953 typeface Steile Futura. The version of Futura you see here was one of the mostused fonts of the twentieth century and is identifiable from it’s geometric shapes reminiscent of the Bauhaus design style popular at the time.
