the money that has been raised by this PAC comes from the Motor Dealers’ Association of Alberta.” In a letter sent to
election commissioner Lorne Gibson, the NDP outlined a slew of concerns alleging that the PAC circumvented donation limits and is acting as a fundraising
apparatus for the UCP. Gibson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but generally the commissioner’s office doesn’t comment on investigations or confirm whether one is taking place. The Motor Dealers’ Association of Alberta (MDA) was motivated to donate to the PAC because it wants to (Continued Page..5)

Native village/Country, parent’s background - Parents moved to Mumbai from Kerala for work. Born and raised in Mumbai. Dad was a store keeper in Dubai and Mom was a Chemistry Teacher Your early education: MSc Nutrition and Dietetics from MS University Vadodara When & why did you come to Canada? Moved to Canada Aug 15, 2009 to be together as a family, I and kids moved from Mumbai and husband from Abu Dhabi. Suncor helped us move to Canada since husband was recruited as Senior Engineer on a Temporary foreign worker visa in the skilled worker category. Your career advancement initiatives and present occupation: We landed on a really hot day in August and were received at the airport by HR Manager from Suncor and taken to a beautifully furnished condo townhouse for 3 months. They supported us with rent for a basement apartment for 1 year and then subsidized the purchase of our 1st home in Canada in 2010. I started working at a Church close by as secretary and in 3 months was recruited as City Editor for the Fort McMurray Today, daily newspaper. I was an avid volunteer and began teaching newcomers to Canada English through the AB WriteBreak Adult Literacy Program, facilitating workshops for Canadian Mental Health Association and hosting a radio and a TV show. Further I went on to work as Corporate Trainer at Keyano College. Thereafter I worked as CASE Coordinator at the #ymm women’s shelter and took on the mantle of the Multicultural Association as their Executive Director. I moved to Edmonton after the forest fire in Fort McMurray have hosted a show Melange on Shaw and was a panelist on DiverCity for City TV. Later I discovered my passion for singing and plunged into antiracism work in the city. Any regrets in life: Everything in life is an achievement or a lesson; I have no regrets Pick any one of your the best achievements: The turnaround for the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo from $150,000 revenue to $650,000 in 3 years and huge growth in terms of membership, participation in programs and events, social impact and being recognized in the community. I received the Girls’ Inc of Northern AB Women of Inspiration award and the Mayor and Council Toast of champions award and was published in the book 150 accomplished women by GROW women leaders. Were you ever discriminated? A few times even by fellow Indians who don’t believe I am Indian What do you miss in Canada?
My connectedness with family and friends and the easy weather..... Going to mom’s and brother’s house and the housemaids of course. Are you happy in Canada? Why? I count my blessings: the slower pace of life, less traffic on roads, the lack of intrusion into your life by all and sundry, the dirt and grime and corruption in daily life Any comments on Canada’s weather: AB weather with its never ending winters is hard at first but then I realized I’m much less sick than I used to be in Mumbai. I love the summers and autumn here, the beauty is unparalleled and my kids love skiing in winters Any comments on Canada’s culture: Overall the culture is very open and welcoming but there are hoops every immigrant has to jump through to grow and a hand from established people is the only way anyone can succeed. What brought you success in Canada? Volunteering wholeheartedly in my skill and passion areas Are you willing to help new comers? I used to mentor newcomers to build confidence and go through interviews. I would love to support newcomers here too. I also run a cookery class to help those are interested to learn to cook Indian Dishes. Your message for Canadians of Asian origin: The sky is the limit, dream big and go make it happen. Communities need to realize that by supporting its members we all grow and if we undermine each other, we all lose. If you cannot support anyone, please do not hinder their growth. If you cannot say something good, avoid saying anything. If language is an issue, try developing fluency, do the certifications you need if you are a professional and let nothing deter you, not even other Asians.
NDP Hounds UCP (Continued..Page1) reverse NDP legislation brought in to regulate the auto industry, Mason said. “Mr. Kenney went to the board of the (MDA), asked for help, outlined a number of things he was prepared to do and then the (MDA) immediately turned around and asked their members to donate to this PAC,” he said. “It’s pretty clear this PAC … and the UCP are arm in arm.” He pointed to a letter from MDA chairman Andrew Robinson to association members suggesting each dealership cough up a $5,000 cheque for Shaping Alberta’s Future, with a total fundraising goal of $1 million. The letter outlined how Kenney and the UCP would address dealer concerns if elected to
government in the spring. MDA president Denis Ducharme said Kenney and the UCP didn’t trade political promises for money. “There were no promises of any kind made,” he said in an interview. “There were no favours asked for. “We just need someone that we can work with,” he added, referencing why the association has put its support behind Kenney. David Wasyluk, the executive director of Shaping Alberta’s Future, said the PAC has fully complied with election financing rules. “This complaint is without merit,” he said in a statement. “We have worked proactively with officials from Elections Alberta to ensure our activities are compliant.” UCP caucus spokesperson
4 men caught ‘lurking’ outside CBI?chief Alok Verma’s house, claim to be IB officials
New Delhi : Four men allegedly loitering outside the CBI director Alok Verma’s residence were held by his personal security officers (PSOs) on Thursday morning, officials said. The men, Prashant Kumar, Vinit Kumar Gupta, Ajay Kumar and Dhiraj Kumar Singh, identified themselves as officers of the Intelligence Bureau. They have submitted their identity proofs and CGHS and Aadhaar cards. “Identify proofs being carried by the suspects have so far suggested that they are IB officers. We are verifying the authenticity of the documents,” said an officer on condition of anonymity. The men, in plain clothes, were allegedly caught from the front and back gates of Verma’s high-secure residence at Janpath Road. They had come in two private cars. “They had been spotted loitering around for a long time since the early hours. They were finally detained after their behaviour
aroused suspicion,” said an officer. They were first questioned by the PSOs inside Verma’s residential compound and then handed over to the police control room. The men have not been arrested at the time of filing this report. The PSOs assigned to Verma are Delhi Police officials. Madhur Verma, the deputy commissioner of police of the New Delhi district under which Janpath falls, said he had no knowledge about the four men. “If at all, it will be the security department looking into the case,” he said. Alok Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana were on Wednesday divested of all responsibilities amid an internal CBI feud. Asthana, who is being investigated on alleged corruption, was removed from all cases by Verma on Tuesday. In a midnight order, the government handed over interim charge of the CBI?to M?Nageshwar Rao.

Christine Myatt said no rules have been broken and the party is still developing its platform. “Soliciting policy proposals from stakeholders does not equal a promise to act and Mr. Kenney has made no such promises to the MDA,” she said in a statement. “The UCP and its leader are fully complying with the laws that the NDP itself implemented.” She added the UCP rejects “a number of characterizations” in the MDA letter, including that Kenney promised to fully repeal NDP labor code and employment standards changes. “Both UCP legacy parties did in fact support elements of this NDP legislation,” she said.Since it launched, Shaping Alberta’s Future has raised
$375,000 in three months, according to financial disclosure with Elections Alberta. Comparatively, the proNDP third-party advertiser Alberta Federation of Labor Inc. raised just shy of $60,000 in the third quarter for a total of $251,000 so far this year. Elections Alberta lists 15 active political third-party advertisers. They are required to register when they spend, or plan to spend, more than $1,000 on political advertising. Last year, the NDP passed legislation to restrict third-party advertisers, including a $150,000 spending limit imposed in the December prior to an election year. The bill also cracked down on promoting a candidate and giving mailing lists to political parties.

The Amritsar train tragedy was waiting to happen Last Friday evening, a train tore through a Dussehra celebration, which was in progress next to a rail track, at Amritsar’s Dhobi Ghat, killing at least 61 people and injuring many others. The celebration has been taking place at the same location for four decades; it’s sheer luck that such a mishap did not happen earlier. The driver in his statement said he applied the “emergency brakes” as he saw the crowd on the tracks but “still some people were caught in the path of the train”. Several arms of the state are responsible for this disaster. First, the Indian Railways. The rail tracks are its property. As an official told the newspaper Mint, if anyone steps on to the tracks, it amounts to trespassing. “It’s on humanitarian grounds that Indian Railways don’t penalise them [those who come on tracks]”, the officer said. By not penalising them, as the Amritsar accident showed, the Railways has not been doing anyone any favour. In fact, it has only encouraged such unacceptable behaviour. Second, the local police. Why on earth did they give permission to hold a function so close to the tracks when they don’t have enough manpower and adequate training to ensure people don’t get in the way of moving trains? Third, the local administration. It seems the organisers of the event did not bother to seek written permission from either the district administration or the municipal corporation. Effectively, there was no prior arrangement to deal with any untoward incident. If the event has been taking place at the same venue, then the local authorities must have known about it. Why were safety measures not in place? This catastrophe will be forgotten before long. People will move on. Many of those killed were poor, migrant workers. It is shocking how cheap lives in India can be. There are several learnings from this tragedy. Organisers of such events must seek permission. Events should only be held in grounds that are safe for attendees. The police must ensure proper crowd control and management at large events. The organisers of the programme and the attendees must also shoulder part of the blame. In a country where basic safety protocols are not in place and adequate arrangements are usually never made on time, it is important that one uses his/ her better judgment to stay safe. This lack of sense of personal safety does not, however, absolve the State of its responsibility of ensuring the safety of all citizens. Yash Sharma

You cut away dead weight and what you don’t want and go with singlepointed energy towards your professional and personal goals. You can expect to arrive at a peaceful resolution in a family conflict. List your priorities and cut through restrictions at work and limitations in personal relationships. You can be ruthless when pointing to truths at the cost of hurting others or yourself. Insight and new understanding is achieved in relationships and partnerships. You begin pulsating in harmony with the rhythm of life and flow easily into life’s waters.
Since you had great expectations you are likely to face disappointment in love or unkindness from friends this week. Your routines and business schedules may be disrupted in an unexpected manner. Don’t cling to the past because clinging will simply create misery. Midweek, situations change for the better and you receive reward and appreciation for your work and participation. Be flexible about professional plans and receptive to new ideas. Personal relationships are likely to be surprising, as there are mixed reactions and feelings therein.
Travel and business opportunities inspire you to make new beginnings and changes! You meet new people and make exciting connections. People who matter appreciate your professional skill and wisdom. Messages and visitors from overseas, business transactions and meetings can keep you busy and preoccupied. You tend to get mentally stressed and over analyse situations this week. It’s best not to confuse or complicate difficult situations more than they are already. Loved ones bring joy and celebration into your life. Your social life is busy and a bit tiring.
You display artful mastery while integrating resources and forces to create what you want in personal and professional aspects this week. Your gift of communication takes you to people who are unapproachable. A friend gives you good advice and support to get past a complicated business problem. Overseas travel and communications are important in the wake of new business opportunities and contracts. You are likely to be involved in multifarious activity that keeps you busy and stressed. This is a week of social activity and excitement as you are much in demand.
Any inner blocks or restrictions that you may have perceived at work or at home prove to be an illusion. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the lightheartedness and adventure life offers this week. Move with the sweetness and gentleness of this time to savor your friendships and relationships. Listen to your heart for the right answers. You are able to express your creative ideas freely at work and your feelings honestly in relationships. You are seen, noted and heard as you begin to express original ideas and plans. You are a free spirit and move ahead with dynamic energy.
You are seen, noted and heard as you express valuable insights and share professional expertise with people who appreciate your work. A time of glory, gain and riches comes unexpectedly after all the monumental efforts you have made in the past. You cannot help being frank in personal relationships and friendships. Do not take your partner for granted but show some love and consideration. Beware of an arrogant and vain person who could embarrass you before family and friends. You are socially sought after and may find it hard to cope with the demands on your time and energy.
This week you have to be a light unto yourself and guide yourself in the path of life with inner wisdom and understanding. You are blessed with divine insight and also play the role of consultant and advisor in professional situations. You function best as an individual and tend to be a perfectionist. You prefer to be in meaningful relationships or rather be alone. When you find no support from others for your deep feelings and truths, you can either feel isolated or bitter or celebrate the fact that your vision is strong enough to survive the powerful human need for approval of friends.
You may be divided in your feelings about relationships and split in your mind about professional matters this week. Overanalysing situations can only add further confusion within you. It’s time to become integrated, centered and crystallised. To be really happy you have to be total while saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ without hesitation in any situation that confronts you. You manage to resolve personal and professional conflicts through discussion and mediation. Balance in partnerships, peace in relationships and harmony in the home are your goals and achievements this week.
Stop thinking negatively and imagining the worst as none of what you fear is happening! You can get past a feeling of oppression by meditating and feeling free and light inside. A positive and creative approach towards family problems changes attitudes and heals old wounds. It’s best to maintain balance as moving into extremes can be disastrous. When divided, wait for totality and clarity, before making decisions. Listen to your intuition and heart rather than to your analysing mind when assessing family and personal relationships. Your faith and patience in personal relationships pays.
Delay, inertia and opposition need to be countered with perseverance, patience and positive energy this week. Your security structure remains intact despite your interest and involvement in different business projects and social commitments. Visitors and news from far off lands bring good cheer. Whatever you have been absorbed with is now coming to an end. By completing it, you will be clearing the space for something new to begin. Use this opportunity to celebrate both the end of the old and the coming of the new. Your horizons are wider and viewpoints higher as you expand business and interests this winter.
As you fly free in the open sky of life and experience, existence provides you with exactly what you need. Celebrate life and all that it brings. You initiate a current of force to achieve professional and personal goals and need to go beyond limitations and blocks to complete projects and fulfill promises. There is harmony of rule and justice as you use your power and authority effectively this week. You are able to influence family decisions and change plans to suit your schedules. It’s important to take your freedom and give it as well to fulfill your own priorities and goals.
You regain peace within and make compromises outsides with people you had differences with in the past. Integrate forces, resources and ideas before making the next move in any situation. A gamble pays off and legal matters are resolved. Make important decisions now and be released from demands and tensions. Mental conflicts can be resolved through discussion and positive attitudes. Love and care from the one special person in your life is a blessing. Your social life is restricted to close friends. This is a good time to plan ahead and have a new vision rather than settle with limitations and restrictions.
