Íø‹≈Ï «¬ßÙØÀ∫√ ¡À‚«Óß‡È Á∆ Federal tax changes: From low-income subsidies, passive cash taxation to carbon tax «¥√«Ó√ Í≈‡∆ È∂ ÏßÈ∆¡ª Ω‰’ª Edmonton (Mary Thomas)-As Federal tax changes come into effect, some will hit your paycheque, others your bills — and if you’re a small business owner, there’s a few you need to be abreast of Starting in January, Canadians’ Canada Pension Plan contributions increase from 4.95 per cent to 5.1 per cent on earnings between $3,500 and $57,400. It’s the first of five years of graduated increases running until 2023, when the rate will reach 5.95 per cent. The increases are going to pay for what eventually will be an enhanced CPP. Partially offsetting that increased CPP contribution on your paycheque will be a drop in Employment Insurance premiums, from $1.66 to $1.62 per $100 of insurable earnings. 2019 also will be the first tax year when low income workers can qualify for a more generous Canada Workers Benefit, a program intended to help the working poor
stay employed. The maximum benefit will increase by between $300 and $400, based on whether the applicant is single or part of a family. That brings the maximum benefits to $1,355 for a single person or $2,335 for a single parent or couple, depending on p e r s o n a l incomes. However, as 2019 is the eligibility year, low income workers will have to wait until 2020 to get the boosted benefit.Experts say more than half of Canadians who live in poverty are working Small business tax changes The rules on how much passive income an incorporated small business can hold is one of the biggest changes to business owners.Passive
income is money earned in interest on funds that sit idle within an incorporated business, without being reinvested or used to cover operating expenses. As of January 1, business owners can generate up to $50,000 in passive income before they start to lose access to the advantageous small business tax rate. Small businesses pay a relatively low tax rate — currently 10 per cent — on the first $500,000 of business earnings. But starting in January, if those businesses hold in excess of the new limit on passive income, some of that first half-million in earnings will be subjected to the much higher corporate rate, depending on how far over the new limit they are.
The federal government’s goal is to encourage business owners to reinvest their passive earnings into their businesses, or into hiring more people, rather than sitting on the cash. Dan Kelly, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business said, “ I think a lot of firms are sitting ducks for the Canada Revenue Agency.” However, the small business tax rate is going down from 10 to 9 per cent in 2019. The federal g o v e r n m e n t estimates the average small business — one that has eligible business income of $107,000 — will keep an extra $1,600 per year after the cut.And for some really small businesses — especially those with no passive income to worry about — that tax cut will be very welcome. Asian Star Native village/ Country and background: I hail from Education capital of India, City of Pune (Poona). My dad (Late Mr. Narendra Lunawat) was my role model and he was an I n c o m e - t a x inspector with local M u n i c i p a l Corporation and my mom (Mrs. Chhaya Lunawat) was a housewife. My mom did her job by being there for everyone and she is the reason why me and my siblings are successful today. Education: I was always curious bout design, engineering and technology and hence I pursued my education in Engineering at University of Pune, India. My major was Chemical/process engineering. When and why did you move to Canada? I moved to Canada in 2010 alone. I was invited by Provincial Government on Alberta Innovates Technology grant to pursue research and masters degree at University of Alberta.

I was all ready to move to US but the opportunity to move to Canada was just really great and I could not deny it. Its funny, I always thought Canada has just tow major cities Toronto and Vancouver and nothing in the middle. I had to do all my homework before moving to Alberta and bone chilling cold. Your career advancement initiatives and present occupation: I have a consulting firm called Lunatech Consulting under which me and my better half Sweta provides engineering and other consulting solutions to our clientele. The services we provide includes from Design engineering of a chemical plant, product to website/ app/software development. I believe on “One stop shop” approach. Recently we got our new start up as Speaking Roses Alberta which is patented technology ready to serve Alberta market. I would like you to visit our website at www.lunatech.ca a n d
www.speakingrosesa lberta.com. Besides, my technical career I am passionate about events, signing and c o m m u n i t y involvement. You might spot me at various events in City of Edmonton either as an emcee or managing event. I am also VP events for Jain Society of Alberta. Your regret in life: I don’t have any regrets, but I believe everything conflict can be dealt with differently and calmly. Pick any one-off you’re the best achievements: I always believe every day you achieve something. Anhonest day of work and a good laugh with friends/family is the greatest achievement for any man. If I still want to pick one achievement, which will be the invitation that I received from provincial government to move to Canada for research as only handful candidates throughout the world get selected for this grant. Everyone in my family, friends felt very proud about me and I got an opportunity to
make an international footprint. Were you every discriminated: I personally never felt being discriminated but I have very strong feeling about discrimination and racism. If I get an opportunity, I want to start a chapter where people can communicate freely. What do you miss in Canada? We always say,” family comes first” and that’s what I miss here in Canada. I moved to Canada alone and I wish to bring my whole family once here to visit me. Secondly, I miss the street food of Pune and Mumbai. I wish there was a Khau Galli (Street food lane) here in Edmonton. Are you happy in Canada? Why? I proudly call Edmonton, Canada as my home. This country helped me to realise the potential that I have and connected me with friends/ families that I call second family. Canada is one of the happiest countries in the world and I am happy make my contribution. Your take on
Canada’s weather: I come from a city where the summer is +40 C and winter is + 18 C so yes, the first winter was a horrible experience but since then I enjoy the changes in weather here and it makes me to value summer and greenery which I never did back home. You can do lots of activities in summer and in winter. Any comments on Canada’s culture: Canada makes every new immigrant feel at home and I like it. The culture is open and accepting but I feel some people are taking disadvantage of that. Canada allows you to practise your faith, religion no matter which country you moved from and that is very important for healthy life and mind. What brought you success in Canada? No matter where you are in world if you have ethics then you will get success and that’s what my mom and dad always taught me. I always make sure that I am behaving ethically and with an open mind. Technically there are a
lot of challenges but if you keep doing a great job then success will knock on your door. My better half Sweta helps me to be a better person every day and that brings more success as a human being. One skill I have developed over the last one is year is to have more patience and smile on my face and thanks to my little one Aaria for teaching your papa.

Are you willing to help new comers? I am always ready to help every new comer. I volunteered at ERIEC (Edmonton Region Immigrant Employment Council) and helping new comer to help with developing new skills. I am also involved with APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers in Alberta) by participating in mentor program.
Your message for Canadians of Asian origin: Never forget your roots. No matter where you come from or where you are today just be open, dream big, help others and respect elderly. Canada is your home so make sure you contribute to the success of your city and your country, Canada.

Narendra Modi 2.0 for battle 2019 In his most expansive interview in recent times, Prime Minister Narendra Modi portrayed himself as a statesman committed to the constitutional process, political pluralism and rule of law. He combined a robust defence of his government’s record with an attack on the political opposition, but with humility and without bitterness. Mr Modi also sought to project an image of a leader who thought about the long term, who addressed structural issues, and would not give in to easy populism — be it on the cultural or economic front. What sceptics would term as image recalibration and supporters would term image reinforcement has happened in a particular context. The opposition has sought to portray Mr Modi personally as a PM who is authoritarian, who disregards institutions and seeks to control them, who is insensitive to the farmers and the poor, and who — even if not intolerant of the country’s minorities — turns a blind eye to majoritarian violence. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) itself — for the first time in four years — is on the defensive. Its morale has taken a hit after the losses in the three state polls. And it is struggling to counter the opposition’s relentless attack. Mr Modi has pressed the reset button and sought to reclaim the political narrative at the beginning of the year to counter precisely this criticism and turn the tide. On the economy, he reiterated his pro-poor credentials by alluding to welfare schemes such as Ayushman Bharat. He sought to reach out to the middle class by according it respect and dignity and pointing out how his government’s initiatives will eventually benefit them. Mr Modi also, somewhat unpersuasively, defended demonetisation as bringing in structural changes. But it was his response to the farm loan waiver that stood out for the PM showed, quite convincingly, that short term sops will not address the conditions that give rise to farm indebtedness and misery. In the realm of politics and society, Mr Modi most emphatically came across as a moderate leader. He spoke of the BJP’s commitment to allies; of respecting their desire to grow; and even emphasised the need for a strong opposition and redefined what ‘Congress-mukt’ meant. On the Ram temple, he refused to give in to the militant demands of a section of his own support base when he made it clear that the legal process must take its course and the legislative route would not be adopted till then. And he condemned once again cow vigilantism and lynching. Once the BJP lost the recent state polls, and in the run up to 2019, the party could have either toned down its political aggression, become more inclusive and introspect about the economy. Or it could have turned more belligerent and adopted communal tactics aimed at majoritarian consolidation. Mr Modi has, correctly, taken the first route. This is a lesson the party should now internalise. Whether it is enough to win over the floating voters once again, and retain its core vote, is the big question for the BJP in 2019. Yash Sharma

2018 was a tough year for many. In Canada, we saw oil plummet and those who gained from it
criticize the resource leading to divisive retaliation. Uncertainty looms like Damocles’ sword as the economy seems to lose ground and more Canadians are unemployed or on survival jobs than ever before. Our political leadership is engaged in dissonance and the common man is confused. “As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I
didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.” Nelson Mandela Like the new dawn, 2019 offers us hope, limitless possibilities and potential all residing in the human mind. History will tell how we changed the directions of our future. We can move forward with strength and courage,
banishing divisive politics for the ones that move people from the place of survive to thrive. We have the seed but need the intellect, mettle, time and place to sow it right, so everyone can reap the harvest. What is the thing that you care for more than yourself? What dream makes you feel alive and fully generative? 2019 may be the year you make

that a reality with focus and dedication, reverence and discipline. If you could do anything you wished, you can actually start by trying it for 30 days. As you push your limits for 30 days, the neurons in your brain get set into a pattern that we call habit. You can change anything you choose in 30 days flat. In 2016, we got evacuated from a fire than consumed most of my city. I found myself in a new place, out of my comfort zone and ready to write a new chapter. It was a traumatic time but we moved on and decided to live in the city we’d moved to. Many of my friends went back but struggled with parameters they hadn’t considered. I said goodbye to the best job I’d held in my entire life. I was diagnosed with high
cholesterol and blood pressure, was 15 kgs larger than I wanted to be and felt sick and lethargic. I decided that had to change. After 2 months ofsunrise yoga and a Keto diet, I lost 10 kgs, never went on statins and felt lighter on my feet. And when I started singing lessons, I felt completely at home. Many naysayers tried to inject their negativity onto me but thatnever sticks toa resilient back. 2 and a half years later, my path has found me. I’m glad for the choices I made for my own transformation. If you want to change the world, why not start with yourself? It might be tough, but you create a new you and get to see the world anew. “There is no passion to be found playing small in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” Nelson Mandela
