Ontario Prosecutor to Oversee UCP Leadership Investigation

Millwoods Society of the Retired & Semi Retired celebrated 152nd Canada Day with gaiety and fervor last week

Edmonton (ATB):Alberta has appointed an out-ofprovince Crown prosecutor to provide advice in the investigation into voting irregularities in the 2017 United Conservative Party leadership election. “This was an independent decision of the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service,” Eric Tolppanen, the head of the service, said in a news release. “As with other prosecutorial decisions in general, the decision was made independently and without the direction, nor seeking of direction, from elected officials,” Tolppannen said. The Ministry of the Attorney General in Ontario has appointed a prosecutor who will be responsible for

providing advice to the police at their request, he said. Both the Ontario Attorney General and Alberta Justice refused to identify the prosecutor. Tolpannen’s statement comes one day after NDP justice critic Kathleen Ganley pushed Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer to confirm whether someone has been appointed and described the runaround the NDP has experienced trying to get information out of Alberta Justice and the

RCMP. “Given, Mr. Speaker, that we continue to wait for the Attorney General to actually name the human being who will perform this work and given that he continues to pass the buck to the police, who cannot name this person, will the Attorney General tell this House if there’s a special prosecutor, a secret prosecutor, or no prosecutor at all?” she asked. Schweitzer had earlier refused to consider an outside prosecutor in the

investigation of alleged voter fraud in the UCP leadership vote despite raising concerns himself about voter fraud during the 2017 UCP leadership vote and being personally questioned by the Mounties about the matter in May. Ganley, the former justice minister, said she couldn’t think of a legal reason for not naming the Ontario prosecutor, but she said even if there was one it would be trumped by the need for transparency. “I think they owe it to Albertans to provide that transparency, to be able to point to an individual and say, ‘This is the completely non-partisan individual who will be overseeing this matter to ensure that it is taken as seriously as any other matter would be.’”

Ganley said it was “genuinely bizarre” that both the Alberta and Ontario ministries refuse to provide a reason for why they won’t publicly name the outside prosecutor. The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service had announced in May 30, it would seek an out-of-province prosecutor to provide advice to police. Prosecutors do not oversee investigations, Tolppannen said in the news release. “As before, the RCMP continue to investigate this matter independently, both of government and the prosecution service,” Tolppannen said.T h e Alberta Crown Prosecution Service will no longer be involved in the investigation, Tolppannen said.

Savoy’s owned by Sajai Sebastian and Shiju Narayanan is a popular joint for those seeking authentic South Indian flavours. Started in July 2012, it has branches in Calgary and the University of Alberta. Dinnertime and weekends are especially packed and you might have to line up to find seats. We went on a W e d n e s d a y evening, yet it was nearly full to

capacity with Indians and mainstream Canadians enjoying the fare. I have always relished the Mango Fish Curry with rice and Masala Dosas but today Sajai shared some lesser

known dishes, I had never tried before. Savoy’s special Juice with carrots, apple, pineapple and ginger doesn’t sound delicious but he will prove you wrong here. Lip smacking Kanthari fish and Chettinad

Gandhi departs but uncertainty in the Congress persists Rahul

Gandhi

formally

announced his resignation publicly as the president of the Congress on Wednesday. In a farewell note, posted on Twitter, Mr Gandhi said that he is stepping down, taking responsibility for the party’s loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He had, soon after the polls, told the Congress Working Committee of his intent to resign. But the CWC passed a resolution urging him to stay on. Other Congress leaders have tried hard to persuade him to change his mind, but Mr Gandhi has stayed firm. Opting out of party presidency is Mr Gandhi’s call. But what is disturbing in the note is a reluctance to introspect, candidly, about the reasons for the electoral loss. He seems to suggest that victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a result of (only) misuse of institutions and tremendous financial resources. This newspaper has been critical of the Election Commission’s conduct during the polls. But it is hard to deny that the election outcome reflected the deep faith a large section of the electorate had in Narendra Modi; the success of his welfare schemes and narrative of nationalism; the inability of the opposition to mount a counter narrative that resonated with citizens and its organisational hollowness and outmoded categories of politics. These are the areas the Congress will have to work on if it wants to mount a challenge. A wrong diagnosis will not lead to the correct prescription. Mr Gandhi can have his assessment of what he sees as the dangers of the BJP’s rule - but then should he not have led from the front? It is also not clear what Mr Gandhi’s role will be in the future party set up. He makes it clear that he will continue to fight for his idea of India as a soldier of the Congress. But given his preeminent status - even without a formal office - will it not result in the emergence of multiple power centres

CULTURE CURRY

Is Religion the opium of the masses or an uplifting ideology governing our lives?

in the party? The resignation may have ended one phase in Congress’ turbulent politics, but the next phase may well be more challenging. Yash Sharma Editorial Team

Religion can be central to one’s identity. The word religion comes from a Latin word meaning “to tie or bind together.” To belong to a religion often means more than sharing its beliefs and participating in its rituals; it also means being part of a community and a culture. All religions include rituals, scriptures, sacred days and gathering places. Each religion gives its followers instructions for how human beings should act toward one another. In addition, three of the world’s religions—Judaism,

Christianity, and Islam—share a common origin: all three trace their beginnings to the biblical figure, Abraham. There is incredible diversity within each religion in terms of how members define their connections to it. For some, a religion’s theological beliefs and rituals are central to their lives. Others are more drawn to a religion’s community and culture than to its beliefs and rituals. Some choose a religion for themselves, or reject religion entirely as a part of their identity. Some governments grant privileges to one religion and not to others, while other governments protect citizens’ freedom to follow any religion without privilege or penalty. For many civilizations until the early modern era,

religion was c o n s i d e r e d inextricable from other areas of life since the values of one’s religion informed, art, politics, athletics, and intellectual pursuits. Countless wars and conflicts have had an overt or covert religious dimension throughout history right up to the present day. Recently, we’ve seen Islamic extremists waging war in the Middle East, a power struggle between Sunni and Shia across the region, the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, violent clashes between Christians and Muslims in Central African Republic, to name a few. Women are subjugated, LGBT people are persecuted, and “blasphemists” are tortured and murdered in the name of religion.

Then there’s the political impact. Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election with the overwhelming support of white evangelical Christians. Legislators in Argentina recently voted against legalizing abortion under pressure from Catholic bishops and the pope. Hungary’s far-right prime minister, Viktor Orbán, has cited the need to protect his country’s “Christian culture” to justify his antiimmigration policies. Followers of most major religions report increasing hostility and, in many cases, violence.

Christians have been largely driven out of the Middle East, with some calling it a new genocide. Meanwhile antisemitism and Islamophobia are rising in Europe. But it’s not all bad news. There are millions of people of faith across the world engaging in social action projects to help the poor and marginalized. Look at the involvement of churches, mosques and synagogues in food banks and projects to support refugees, the sanctuary church movement in the US, the extraordinary sums raised by Sikh

and Islamic charities for relief work in some of the world’s most desperate places. Spirituality and humanity underlie the tenets of every faith. As believers and nonbelievers we need to keep love as the basis of all relationships to survive this growing divide. The fragmentation of society can be curbed only if we remember that we’re all one and pain to one will impact the rest. We cannot hurt without being hurt.
