Markaz ul Islam Hosted Happy Maan in Unhappy Situation Successful Islamic Awareness Day
(Kiran Malik Khan/Fort McMurray) Markaz ul Islam, the Islamic Centre of Fort McMurray’s Islamic Awareness Day was a phenomenal success thanks to hundreds of residents who were in attendance. The event was held in MacIsland, and saw Nexen Field House abuzz with guests including MLA Tany Yao, and Mayor Don Scott, who were eager to learn about
Muslim contributions to society through the 32 projects on display. These ranged in topic from Muslims in Sports, Women’s Rights in Islam, to the ever popular coffee – discovered by a Muslim - From Bean to Cup, and Science in Quran. The free family event also had cultural food for sale, henna tattoos, face painting for children, calligraphy, and an opportunity for
women to try on the Hijab, the Islamic headscarf. “It was heartwarming to see so many people in attendance and give such overwhelming support. This could not be possible without the incredible effort by all the participants, who worked on their projects and models over the past few months. There are no words to thank the army of volunteers, who gave so much of their time
since November. There was a lot of effort put in by the organizing team, mentors, judges, and many event volunteers,” said Bushra Naseer, who oversees Markaz’s Sisters’ Committee. “It was an all in one event where families learned about Islam and Muslim contributions to the world, had fun at the various booths, and ate delicious cultural food. The Imam was also there to answer any questions people had about Islam. The support and solidarity shown by the community at large was very encouraging especially after hearing about the massacre in New Zealand (on March 15). This just goes to show that humanity prevails and we all stand united in difficult times. Coming to an event like this helps people to learn and accept the values of a different faith, which in turn helps everyone to live in peace and harmony,” Naseer commented. Naseem Abdo, also the project co-lead, and VP, Outreach for Markaz ul Islam echoed similar sentiments.
Edmonton ( AT B ) : A l b e r t a ’ s election commissioner has ruled that Hardyal Mann made irregular political contributions, and the Calgary political operative alleges the existence of a plan to commit voter fraud in order to secure the election of Jason Kenney as United Conservative Party leader — a controversy that’s erupting in the midst of a provincial election. Hardyal (Happy) Mann does not dispute the commissioner’s finding in relation to irregular donations. But he says in a March 24 formal response to the commissioner obtained by CBC News that he “trusted Mr. Jason Kenney, his campaign team, and their judgment” and that he never thought they would “risk breaking any laws.” “Mr. Kenney and his associates, who were equal participants, will assume high elected seats in our government,” he wrote. “However, those of us who did the work for them are left with fines, charges and shame. That is not fair.” The controversy is erupting in the midst of a provincial election, with Albertans set to vote on April 16, and
Kenney’s UCP leading by a wide margin in recent polls. A letter obtained by CBC News that was sent to Mann outlining the findings of commissioner Lorne Gibson’s investigation says Mann — a power broker in Calgary’s Indo-Canadian community — admitted to being at a breakfast meeting with Kenney in June 2017 in the lead-up to the United Conservative P a r t y ’s l e a d e r s h i p vote. The letter says the future party leader promised support for Mann’s “own political goals” if Mann joined the Kenney team. It was an offer he accepted. The commissioner’s letter goes on to say Mann admitted to being at a July 2017 meeting attended by Kenney and others tied to the campaign. The document says Mann told the commissioner that both
“the finances for Jeff Callaway’s campaign and voter fraud were identified as tactics that would be employed.” The election commissioner found Mann contributed a total of $9,000 to the Callaway campaign that was not his own, agreeing to attach names to contribution forms that had prefilled amounts of $3,000 for himself and two others. Alberta election rules prevent someone from donating money that is not their own. The commissioner said Mann admitted the funds were not his and that none of the money had moved through his accounts, “reluctantly” providing bank statements and documentation as proof. Mann stressed in his response to the commissioner that neither he nor any of the people tied to him were given money to
donate to the Callaway campaign. He simply consented to their names being used on the donation forms. “These transactions were handled only by the select group of people who originally organized the kamikaze campaign and were responsible for handling the financing,” he wrote. The investigation by the commissioner relates to the financing of Callaway’s so-called kamikaze UCP leadership campaign. It’s alleged Callaway ran for the purpose of targeting Kenney’s top rival, former Wildrose leader Brian Jean, with a plan to step down before the vote in October 2017 and throw his support behind Kenney. So far, the commissioner has fined or sent letters of reprimand to five people for donating money to the Callaway campaign that was not their own. Mann would make six. Kenney has strenuously denied any involvement in the alleged plot, saying it’s normal for leadership campaigns to be in contact. He has said he first heard of Callaway dropping out of the race the night before it happened.

Internet intermediaries must be held accountable for content Two developments, on March 26, in two corners of the world, could finally force technology giants which reap the benefits of being media companies but do not want to handle the responsibilities that come with being one, to change their ways. The first is in Australia, which has warned companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google, that they need to prevent their platforms from being “weaponised” by extremists and terrorists. The country’s move comes as a response to the New Zealand terror attack. Ahead of a meeting between the government and the companies, AFP reported that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrisson spoke about the speed of response of such companies when it came to commercial matters — “They can get an ad to you in half a second” — and that “they should be able to pull down this sort of terrorist material and other types of very dangerous material in the same sort of time frame.” As the report pointed out, while Facebook said it removed the livestream of the New Zealand terror attack quickly, the fact is that the video was still available online well after the attack. The second development was in Europe where the European Parliament said technology platforms will have to check the content being posted online by their users for copyright violation. The rule is part of copyright reforms that have generated a lot of debate with opponents (including technology giants that lobbied heavily against them) claiming that this marks the end of “Internet freedom”. For the record, content publishers have supported the changes, motivated by two reasons: maintaining standards in journalism; and protecting their earnings, which have been eroded. In both cases, technology companies have so far been protected as intermediaries. Their liability is limited, and they have got away with such interventions as taking down copyrighted or offensive content when this is pointed out, or when asked to by a court. These are not the kind of safe

harbours media companies enjoy, even in countries with absolute freedom of speech and expression protections.
Humans: a threat or a treat to our planet?
Technology companies have an interest in portraying themselves as mere intermediaries — when they start aggressively monitoring and moderating content, they stop being intermediaries, and lose the protection granted them. Not surprisingly, Australia’s Attorney General was quoted by AFP as saying after the meeting that their response was “thoroughly underwhelming”. Yash Sharma Editorial Team

Earth is home to millions of species. Just one dominates it. Us. Our cleverness, our inventiveness and our activities have modified almost every part of our planet. Indeed, our cleverness, our inventiveness and our
activities are now the drivers of every global problem we face. And every one of these problems is accelerating as we continue to grow towards a global population of 10 billion. The situation we’re in right now is an emergency – an unprecedented planetary emergency. We currently have no known means of being able to feed 10 billion of us at our current rate of consumption and with our current agricultural system. Indeed, simply to feed ourselves in the next
40 years, we will need to produce more food than the entire agricultural output of the past 10,000 years combined. Yet food productivity is set to decline very sharply, over the coming decades due to: climate change; soil degradation and desertification. By the end of this century, large parts of the planet will not have any usable water. We are going to have to triple – at least – energy production by the end of this century to meet expected demand. To meet that
demand, we will need to build: 1,800 of the world’s largest dams, or 23,000 nuclear power stations, 14m wind turbines, 36bn solar panels, or just keep going with predominantly oil, coal and gas – and build the 36,000 new power stations. Are governments and the world’s major oil, coal and gas companies – some of the most i n f l u e n t i a l corporations on Earth – really going to decide to leave the money in the ground, as demand for energy i n c r e a s e s

relentlessly? I doubt it. Every which way you look at it, a planet of 10 billion looks like a nightmare. What, then, are our options? The only solution is to change our behaviour, radically and globally, on every level. We urgently need to consume less. A lot less. Radically less. And we need to conserve more. A lot more. To accomplish such a radical change in behaviour would also need radical government action. But as far as this kind of change is concerned, politicians are currently part of the problem, because the decisions that need to be taken to implement significant behaviour change inevitably make politicians very unpopular – as they are all too aware. T h a n k f u l l y , businesses are beginning the trend away from planned obsolescence. The high-end outdoors clothing company Patagonia, for example, issues a guarantee that it will repair any of its products for free over
their lifetime, and employs a team of seamstresses to do just that. It actually ran an advertising campaign asking consumers to buy less of the stuff they don’t need, to curb waste and environmental damage. As mines become depleted, it could force the market to change its ways. We’re moving towards a resourcelimited economy, which means manufacturers are going to have to move their business model towards remanufacturing and repairs. Perhaps, then, planned obsolescence will begin to reach its own expiration date. As individuals we must take ownership of how we reduce, reuse and recycle to curb overconsumption that will only take us quicker to the end of our planet’s life and ours. Just simple everyday actions like taking a reusable cup to Tim Hortons and using reusable straws maybe just 1 step and every step will change group behavior. Looking forward to hearing from you at mary@asiantribune.ca.

Your leadership qualities come to the fore as you take control of personal and professional situations and organise or resolve them in a brilliant manner. A lot of interesting people are attracted to you and you need to conserve time. You make new beginnings at work, start new ventures and win your battles against adversaries. You are likely to have a lot to do with people in power. Beware of ego conflicts, rashness and ill-temper. An influential person likes your exceptional qualities and supports you through hell and high water. Health and heart need to be taken care of with love and care.
You are swift and strong while making professional moves and business arrangements this week! You have a youthful outlook and energy that attracts enthusiastic and creative people in your field of work. You associate with supportive professionals and move ahead forcefully achieving goals and targets without procrastinating or waiting for anything. Personal relationships are loving and romantic yet there can be ego clashes or difference of opinion. It’s important to remain in touch with your sense of humour that gets you through difficult situations and to unapproachable people.
It’s best to take stock of situations and put some energy into making changes and achieving goals this week. You have been patient and loving in emotional relationships but now need some clarity and commitment. Health needs watching and finances need to be managed. Beware of abandoning success in a professional project due to a general decline of interest in anything. You need to be consistent and persistent for a while to achieve stability and material gain. A beloved supports you through ups and downs. Let go rather than hang on to anything that is finished.
The past gets wiped out by itself, without any effort or regret, once you make a new beginning in any aspect. New beginnings take the shape and plan you assign to them so you need to be total in the moment and allow creativity to happen spontaneously. Personal relationships are rejuvenated with new feelings, sensitivity, awareness and joy. Breakthrough old patterns that the mind is caught up in and take a fresh and unprejudiced look at personal and professional issues! A simple and straight forward approach to a complicated family situation may just be the answer you have been searching for.
Your individualistic and original approach brings success in a creative project. You are not afraid of expressing brilliant ideas even if they arouse controversy to begin with. You can be sudden and enthusiastic in love or anger. Love and romance are on the cards! You begin to realize how much you care about loved ones that you may have been ignoring for some time. A daughter may need your support to make a new beginning. It is important to be playful and non-serious to welcome with open arms something wonderful which is on the horizon.
You feel hopeless about personal and professional aspects but nothing so negative is happening - fortify yourself and change your attitude. Worry about a health problem or financial loss is only getting you down; you must realize that things are not as bad as they look to you in the moment. There is no need to feel oppressed and suffer but stand up for yourself and get free of limitations and restrictions. Beware of a subtle and crafty person who may talk you into a losing proposition. Your patience and faithfulness in personal relationships brings you love and support in abundance.
You are likely to travel and indulge in multifarious activity. It’s a time of duality when choices and decisions have to be taken. Your intelligence, humour and gift of repartee’ are scintillating and endear you to associates, friends and family. Media involvement and exposure are gainful and entertaining. You are able to express yourself creatively and achieve success in professional and business projects. Beware of superficial connections and shallow people as they prove to be selfish and unthinking. Stop in the middle of a busy day to become silent and centered within.
There is a natural harmony and ease in personal relationships this week. Happiness blended with success gives you a sense of well-being and satisfaction as there is no strain or stress in professional and personal situations. This is a time of new beginnings for business ventures and professional projects that increase your earning power and wealth. However, it is best to remain aware and persistent in your effort towards achievement or things can go out of hand. Short term loans and projects are available and useful at this point.
You aim for power, status and position in the work area, some of which is likely to come to you this week. You spend a happy time with children and family. Your personal relationship has a special quality of love and romance. Your social life is likely to be busy. Professional and business matters go according to plan and accrue some financial gain. Since you are adventurous and blessed with youthful energy you take a short trip trekking, sailing or indulging in other sporty activity. Don’t allow your emotions to influence professional decisions. Listen to your intuition and trust your feelings.
Its best to be realistic and practical or you can get restless with professional and personal situations this week. Some of your grand ideas may not work the way you expect them to. Things are changing by themselves so allow a bit of space and time to give you direction. Whatever the space you are in right now - sleepy and depressed, or roaring and rebellious - be aware that situations will evolve into something new if you allow it. This is a time of growth and change. Meditation and reflection especially over the week end herald the end of a delusion.
You find yourself immersed in and overflowing with emotion, receiving and giving in personal relationships, emptying and receiving more love from friends and family. Your mind at this point is not busy, preoccupied and aggressive with professional matters or hindering you from listening passively to the rhythm of the heart. Sensitivity, intuition and compassion are the qualities that shine forth at this time, dissolving barriers and judgments and bringing you closer to yourself and others. Be aware of moods in relationships and delusions about business or financial matters at this point.
You feel free and unfettered this week and you go beyond standard practice, rules and regulations in the work area. You may invite a mixed lot of reactions and responses, a few negative and others mostly positive and flattering in nature. You need to trust your intuition in relationships and gut feelings in business matters and act accordingly even if your actions appear to be foolish to others. It is best to allow and take freedom and space in loving relationships for them to continue happily. Rely on yourself, your awareness and that which cannot be taken away from you.
