Rupee fall has surprising new reason: It’s RBI New Delhi -The worst run of rupee losses in 16 years is set to extend. Only this time, the declines might not be triggered by oil but by the surprise move by India’s central bank to hold rates despite the currency’s free fall. dian of 10 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The December-end estimate has inched up from 69 at the start of September. Reserve Bank of India governor Urjit Patel’s comments Friday that the rupee’s drop is moderate in comparison to emerging market peers and that the central bank doesn’t have any target in mind unnerved investors who were expecting the authority to boost its defence of Asia’s worst-performing major currency. “Governor Patel has effectively left the rupee out in the cold and insinuated that it is not his job to determine the appropriate level for the currency,” said Charlie Lay, an analyst

at Commerzbank AG in Singapore. “RBI has seemingly opened the floodgates for further rupee weakness.” The rupee fell past the 74 to a dollar mark for the first time soon after the RBI’s decision, and analysts, whose year-end estimates have been obliterated by the meltdown, cut their targets further. Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken AB said the rupee could test 75 in the near term while ING Bank NV said the bank’s recent downgrade to 75 wasn’t enough. The currency rose 0.2 percent to 74.2275 at 10:22 a.m. in Mumbai, rebounding from a record low of 74.3950 touched on Tuesday.

High drama as angry SC sends Amrapali Group directors behind bars for non-compliance New Delhi (ATB)Three directors of real estate giant Amrapali Group were dramatically arrested from inside a jam-packed courtroom no.6 of the Supreme Court on Tuesday evening after angry judges called in the police. As stunned lawyers and media persons looked on, Anil Kumar Sharma, Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar who had been summoned to the court were abruptly taken into custody on the orders of justices Arun Mishra and U U Lalit in connection with cases filed by homebuyers who were neither given flats nor returned the hard earned money running into lakhs of rupees that they have invested in various projects. The dramatic scene was reminiscent of the sudden arrest of Sahara chief Subrata Roy on March 4, 2014 after called in by a Justice J S Kheharled bench to seek explanation regarding non-refund of Rs 23,000 crore to investors. The immediate reason for the arrest of Amrapali directors was their refusal to submit documents

pertaining to accounts of 46 group companies to forensic auditors despite repeated orders in the last two months. SC directed Delhi and Noida police to coordinate and seize all the documents and hand them over to forensic auditors. The court is probing allegation leveled by petitioner homebuyers that the group directors had siphoned off money they had deposited for the purchase of the flats. "Let the Police take them from the court, to their respective offices and residences and other places where documents may be found", said the judges. As Justice Mishra ordered the security persons present in the courtroom to call in the police, the lawyer for the directors pleaded that

one more chance be given to hand over the documents. The bench shot back: "Enough of hide and seek. You are playing games with the court. We have given you more than enough time. We have not left any stone unturned to make them comply with our orders. It is not a normal arrest. If you wanted to live with dignity, you should have handed over the documents immediately". SC said the Directors shall remain in custody till the documents are handed over to forensic auditors. The lawyer for the group earlier insisted they had handed over the documents but the two auditors -- Ravi Bhatia and Pawan Kumar Aggarwal -- appointed by the court to conduct a forensic audit of Amrapali Group, said they have not yet received all the docu-

ments. The bench termed it as gross violation of the court's order and proceeded to arrest them. The bench also issued notice to all these companies and their directors asking why contempt proceedings be not initiated against them. "We, therefore, direct Delhi Police as well as Noida and Greater Noida Police to seize all the relevant documents as ordered by this Court and hand them over to the forensic auditors", the court said, adding that the "documents sought by Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT) in Amrapali's matter be also seized". It ordered that if the documents were found to be bulky, they be kept in a room and its key be given to the forensic auditors. "We make it clear that not even one single paper will remain with the auditors and Directors of the Amrapali Group of Companies for the aforesaid period", the court said. SC observed that account books of the group were finalised by their internal and statutory auditors till 2015 only and there were apparently no records of account books from then on till now.

Cyclone Titli hits Odisha-Andhra coast, strong winds uproot trees, poles; flights and trains cancelled Odisha-A very severe cyclonic storm hit the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast early on Thursday morning, bringing with it heavy rain and winds gusting at 140150 kmph.Cyclone Titli, the strongest cyclone to have formed over the Bay of Bengal this year, is expected to cross the Odisha coast over the next two hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). “The process of landfall has started and it will completely cross the Odisha coast in one or two hours. The system will pass close to Gopalpur,” HR Biswas, director of Metereological Centre, Bhubaneswar, told. “The forward sector of the eye of the storm has been entering into the land mass,” the IMD added. While Gopalpur in Odisha reported surface winds at 126 kmph, Kalingapatanam in Andhra Pradesh recorded wind speed of 56 kmph. As the landfall process started, at least five districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda and Jagatsinghpur are receiving good amount of rainfall coupled with high speed winds under the impact of Titli. The storm is expected to gradually weaken and re-curve northeastwards and move towards Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha by Thursday afternoon, Biswas said, adding the that Titli is being monitored by the

coastal Doppler Weather Radars at Visakhapatnam, Gopalpur and Paradip. The latest observations indicate that ‘Titli’, over west-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 19 kmph during the past six hours. The heavy overnight rainfall left trees and electric poles uprooted, while officials said kuchha houses were damaged. Road communication in some places, including Gopalpur and

Berhampur, was snapped, according to PTI. Meanwhile, the Odisha government has geared up its machinery to tackle the situation. Before Titli made landfall, over three lakh people from five coastal districts were evacuated as a precautionary step. Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi said collectors of 17 of the state’s 30 districts have been put on red alert, the highest state of emergency preparedness,

over the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. These districts are Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Boudh, Cuttack, Jajpur, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Koraput and Rayagada. The Centre also rushed nearly 1,000 NDRF personnel to Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal on Wednesday besides issuing directions for storage of food, fuel and maintaining power supply and telecommunication lines. Odisha chief secretary AP Padhi said all schools and colleges in the state were shut for the next two days, and students union elections in colleges scheduled for Thursday have been cancelled. The East Coast Railway zone stopped movement of all trains on the ChennaiHowrah section from Wednesday afternoon till further orders. Some trains were cancelled too. The Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar closed its night parking from Wednesday night. Indigo airlines cancelled 5 of its flights originating from Bhubaneswar. The cancelled flights include two for Delhi, one each for Kolkata, Bengaluru and Mumbai. The incoming flights from these destinations have also been cancelled, said airport director Suresh Hota.

Nikki Haley’s resignation: No clear cut answers Unlike many other high-profile members of the Donald Trump administration, Nikki Haley, the first Indian-American to hold a cabinet position, is stepping down as the US ambassador to the United Nations on her own terms. Her resignation has not come under the shadow of a scandal, or followed a terminal breakdown in relations with the mercurial Mr Trump, a reason behind the acrimonious ouster of so many other senior members of the administration. At her appearance with Mr Trump to announce her decision to leave her job at the end of the year, Ms Haley was effusive in her praise of the president and listed what she described as his achievements in the field of diplomacy that have resulted in the US being respected around the world. Some of the matters cited by her as achievements may be questionable, though Mr Trump was equally complimentary and approving of her work at the UN and within his national security circle, and even went on to say he hoped she would return to the administration at some point. The surprise resignation, however, has led to intense speculation about the reasons behind it and Ms Haley’s plans, given that she is seen as one of the rising stars of the Republican Party and considered a potential rival to Mr Trump in the 2020 presidential race. Ms Haley has already addressed the issue of the next US elections by saying in her resignation that she will not be a “candidate for any office in 2020” and that she will be out campaigning for Mr Trump’s re-election. Though Ms Haley was the only member of the administration to appear with Mr Trump to announce her resignation, there have been reports that she has been unhappy at being left out of debates on key issues this year, and that she was frustrated by criticism of her within the White House, especially by some aides of Mr Trump who thought she was getting ahead of the president on policy matters. Ms Haley’s decision to quit just ahead of crucial midterm elections and after a contentious campaign to confirm a much-criticised nominee for the Supreme Court, which divided the US along gender lines, will continue to fuel speculation about her exit. Perhaps, she believed the time had come for her to make a clean break from the Trump administration to focus on her longterm plans. Just because Ms Haley has ruled out running in the next presidential race doesn’t mean she doesn’t have her eyes on the 2024 elections. Yash Sharma
