UCP “Kamikaze” Campaign Fines Pegged at $75,500 World leaders remember Edmonton (ATB): Another person has been fined by Alberta’s election commissioner for donating money that was not his own to the United Conservative Party leadership campaign of Jeff Callaway. Christopher Maitland donated $3,000 for the 2017 leadership contest and has been hit with a $4,500 fine. He’s just the most recent person to be sanctioned. So far, the election commissioner has levied $75,500 in fines tied to the Callaway campaign. It’s alleged money was funnelled into the campaign from a corporation and distributed by C a l l a w a y ’ s
communications manager Cam Davies. Davies has been fined a total of $12,000 for contributing money to the campaign under the names of other people. Hardyal (Happy) Mann detailed to Media how his name and the names of two family members were added to donation forms with his consent. He said the money never passed through his accounts.
Callaway’s chief financial officer, Lenore Eaton, has been fined for knowingly making false statements on the candidate’s financial returns and for failing to advise of a banned corporate donation. Eaton, who could face jail time, was also the chief financial officer of that corporation, Energize Alberta, which was controlled by Calgary businessman Robyn Lore. Callaway ran a “kamikaze” campaign in 2017 on behalf of Jason Kenney, now premier. Kenney won the UCP leadership on Oct. 28, 2017, after the Alberta Progressive Conservative and Wildrose parties merged. Callaway ran
for the sole purpose of targeting Kenney’s chief rival, former Wildrose leader Brian Jean, and then dropping out of the race to support Kenney. Both men deny the allegations, but media obtained emails showing higherups in Kenney’s campaign circle providing resources — strategic political direction, media and debate talking points, speeches, videos and attack advertisements — to the Callaway campaign. There was a timeline for when Callaway would drop out of the campaign and throw his support behind Kenney. Kenney’s deputy chief
of staff, Matt Wolf, even emailed a resignation speech to Callaway the day he dropped out of the leadership race. The investigation into c a m p a i g n contributions is in addition to an RCMP investigation into allegations of voter fraud in the 2017 UCP leadership race. Investigation has revealed the fraudulent emails were used to cast ballots in that race, but the party has said the contest was c l e a n . R e c e n t l y, the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service said it was appointing an out-of-province prosecutor to oversee the investigation into the voter fraud allegations.
1944 D-Day invasion
Portsmouth (ATB)Queen Elizabeth was joined by world leaders, including Donald Trump and Angela Merkel, to mark the 75th anniversary of DDay, paying personal tribute to the veterans of the largest seaborne invasion in history which helped bring World War Two to an end.
The queen, Prince Charles, presidents and prime ministers rose to applaud veterans, their coats heavy with medals, as they stood on a giant stage beside a guard of honour after a film of the Normandy landings was shown. “The wartime generation my generation - is resilient, and I am
delighted to be with you in Portsmouth today,” the 93-year-old queen, wearing bright pink, said. “The heroism, courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten. It is with humility and pleasure, on behalf of the entire country indeed the whole free (Continued Page.. 4)

Trump read a prayer given by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944: “The enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.” French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, German
Chancellor Merkel, and leaders and senior figures from 10 other countries also attended. Shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944, thousands of paratroopers were dropped. Then came the naval bombardment of German positions overlooking the shore. Then the infantry arrived on the beaches. Mostly American, British and Canadian men, some just boys, waded ashore as German soldiers tried to kill them with machine guns and artillery. Survivors say the sea was red with blood and the air boiling with the thunder of explosions. Thousands were killed on both sides. Line

Even the codenames of the sectors of the invasion - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword can draw tears from veterans. “I was terrified. I think everyone was,” said John Jenkins, 99, a veteran who landed at Gold Beach. “You never forget your comrades because we were all in it together.” The commemorations featured an hour-long performance recounting the wartime events and a flypast by historic, military aircraft. Afterwards, world leaders met veterans of the landings. The queen, President Trump, Melania and Prince Charles shook
hands with half a dozen veterans were waiting for them, exchanging a few words and asking them about their stories from D-Day. “Congratulations. Thank you very much,” Trump could be heard telling one of them. Sixteen countries attended the commemorations: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Bickerings in Congress NOTHING succeeds like success and the realisation seems to have dawned on the grand old party of India as the sorry figure it cut in the Lok Sabha elections lies juxtaposed with the BJP’s spectacular showing. Predictably, fissures have come to the fore as stocktaking begins. It all began with party president Rahul Gandhi accepting responsibility for the defeat, volunteering to step down and blaming veterans like Ashok Gehlot, Kamal Nath and P Chidambaram for insisting on tickets for their sons even as he was not inclined to do so. He also pointed out that the Congress had done badly in states where it was in power like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The blame game shows no signs of ebbing with Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot blaming his deputy Sachin Pilot for son Vaibhav’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls. The escalation shows the party president’s observation has gone unheeded even as Gehlot’s son trailed in the Assembly segment represented by his father. In Haryana, knives are out for state party chief Ashok Tanwar with former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda seeking changes. In Punjab, there is demand for action against the Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu for his ‘friendly’ match comment against Capt Amarinder Singh and the latter alleging that Sidhu was eyeing the CM’s chair. In Maharashtra, senior party leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has hinted at joining the BJP and the Karnataka state unit has drawn flak for sidelining seniors. Earlier, spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi left her party to join the Shiv Sena. The Congress view is that since the future role of party president Rahul Gandhi is not clear, nothing can be said about changes in the state units. What the party needs to tell itself is that it has been out of power only for five years after the 10-year tenure of Manmohan Singh. The loss can be disappointing but it is also an opportunity to plug organisational gaps, increase the outreach of party programmes and play the role of a constructive opposition. Public memory is short and the party should bide its time purposefully instead of going into a sulk. Yash Sharma Editorial Team

Is the dwindling faith in God and Government a sign of end times?
Mary Thomas Associate Editor, Asian Tribune
Society had always been governed by principles and values, one of them being faith in God and leadership. Over the last two decades, trust in both has been dwindling around the world. Citizens dissatisfied with the democratic process? Spiritual organisations closing down and democracy itself at risk? Numerous studies have documented a precipitous erosion of confidence in g o v e r n m e n t , forecasting grave consequences for the future of democracy in the west. On the other hand, we also see a rise in religious fundamentalism, segregation and economic decline in
others. Climate change and the state of our planet provide the bleak backdrop. R u s s e l l Dalton, a leading scholar of political behavior and democratic theory, ‘regardless of recent trends in the economy, in large and small nations, in presidential and parliamentary systems, in countries with few parties and many, in federal and unitary states, the direction of change is the same’. Trust seems to have declined among all societal groups young, old, rich, poor, we are all in this together. Citizens’ attitudes are a function of their values, which determine what they expect from government, and governments’ ability to meet those expectations. Thus, if support has declined, either governments have been performing poorly, or citizens have started
expecting more from their governments. R o b e r t Putnam, noted political scientist, known for his books Bowling Alone and Making Democracy Work, maintains that forces of modernization, trends of social and geographic mobility, as well as other factors, such as the digital revolution, have weakened the bonds holding individuals and communities together and, in turn, eroded both interpersonal and political trust. Things that were once held sacred are not anymore. A correlation between rising secularism and prosperity becomes evident, though in Italy and Ireland, well-off First World countries religiosity remains high and China and Vietnam, whose regimes are officially atheist, are among the poorer nations and also the most secular. 80.8 per cent of Americans believe
in God and always have, a higher percentage of the population than in any other affluent nation.France had 28.9 per cent lifelong believers, for example, while Britain had 36.7 per cent).24.2 per cent attend religious services once a week, compared to 5.6 per cent in France, 10.0 per cent in the U.K. and 17.7 per cent in Canada. Two-thirds of Canadians identify either as Catholic or as Protestant, but according to the analysis by the Pew Research Center ’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, the numbers are slowly declining. Over the last 2 decades, the rising immigration has brought in a shift attributable to first g e n e r a t i o n immigrants. The second-generation story is different with a move towards cultural assimilation with an introduction of all world religions to the
www.asiantribune.ca. Also, follow us on twitter @AsianTribuneEdm
mix, the equation is more complex than ever. Z u c k e r m a n attributes U.S.’s above average religiosity to socioeconomic inequality,”We have 50 to 60 million people without health insurance; we have the highest child poverty rates of the industrialized democratic world; the greatest gap between rich and poor of the industrialized democratic world; we have increasing inequality and, voilà, we also have a strongly religious society … that can’t be accidental. Prosperity is one strong causal factor in helping to explain why religion corrodes.” Besides, there is an onslaught in the public domain on anything religious or spiritual. Individuals of all faiths or none, and from all points on the political and ideological spectrum, should be alarmed at the mounting assault on the free exercise of religion and freedom
of religious expression. The erosion of one constitutional right— especially one as fundamental as religious liberty and the freedom of speech—may serve as a precedent for the erosion of other rights to the detriment of all Americans.—Jay Alan Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice. If we are conscious of these macro trends and impending impact on society, we can actconscientiouslyat the individual and societal level to soften the blow. If we go about our merry way, continuing to corrupt the foundations of society without a care, we are bound to land in a chaos that might even snuff out life entirely.
