NDP in Quandary about Calling Election Edmonton (ATB): UCP wants to push in elections. There are bubbling party discontents and investigations that carry a whiff of scandal. Delay could mean danger. Premier Rachel Notley’s nomination in Edmonton-Strathcona is set for Sunday, March 17. The NDP has now nominated candidates in almost

all 87 ridings. On Monday, March 18, the legislature opens with a throne speech. Notley could go to the lieutenant-governor the next day and ask that the writ be dropped for an election April 16. But by all accounts, she hasn’t made the timing decision yet. The province is at a strange point of pre- election drift. Kenney keeps

he’ll cancel many NDP plans. He vows to halt $3.7 billion in spending on rail cars to carry oil, and to quit contracts for big solar projects. He promised to stop the huge project to centralize medical lab testing in a new building in Edmonton. Kenney claimed this would save $650 million — almost saying enough for a new

VP Singh Badnore, Punjab Governor and UT administrator, during the release of special stamp on former Vice- Chancellor Ram Chand Paul at Panjab University Chandigarh Chandigarh (ATB)- The governor of Punjab and UT administrator, VP Singh Badnore, released a commemorative postage stamp of former Panjab University vicechancellor, Ram Chand Paul, on Wednesday, at Law Auditorium PU.

Badnore said Paul is remembered for his critical inputs in the development of the varsity into a first-rate academic institution of the country. V-C Raj Kumar siad Paul was the longest serving vice-chancellor (197484) of PU. KK Paul said

his father was a frined, philosopher and guide to nmumerous students. KK Bhasin, converner of RC Paul Centenary Celebration Committee, who was the last PH D student of Paul, said Paul was an inspiring and motivating teacher, and an untiring

researcher. Chief postmaster general, Anil Kumar, talked about how prosposalsfor issue of commemorative postage stamps are examined and approved. He fecilitated the electronic release of the stamp.

A documentary on the life journey of professor Paul as a chemist, educationalist, administrator and a human being, was featured. The function was attened by four former PU V.Cs, RP Bambah, KN Pathak, RC Sobti and AK Grover.

hospital. He says the current system for X-rays, blood work and many other tests works pretty well, without spending anything extra. That’s certainly true in Calgary, where quick access to tests has improved enormously over the past decade. Kenney also said that he’ll soon promise cuts to more projects the UCP considers wasteful. With the widespread view that Kenney has a pending election already won, these promises have the ring of government policy. But the UCP isn’t the government. The NDP is, and may remain so. Until the election’s done, investors won’t know where to put themselves or their money. A n y government in trouble is always tempted to stall. The public mood can shift in a moment — look what happened to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in just a couple of weeks. The New Democrats foresee a similar popularity plummet for Kenney. Their belief is that Notley is personally more liked and respected.

The goal is to discredit him. In that work, the NDP is getting plenty of help from Kenney’s own kind. Press Progress reported that Happy Mann, a fired UCP candidate, says Kenney was involved in the “kamikaze candidate” scheme, and in leadership voting irregularities. Mann confirmed that the story accurately reflected what he said. But Kenney insists that Mann’s charges are themselves “a ridiculous conspiracy theory” motivated by sour grapes. In return, Mann challenges Kenney to deny that a key meeting took place. Mann is under investigation by the E l e c t i o n Commissioner, Lorne Gibson. He and two family members contributed $3,000 each to Jeff Callaway’s leadership campaign. One associate, Karen Brown, has already been fined $3,500 for donating money that wasn’t her own. Asked about that, Mann becomes vague. But he says Kenney was involved in plans for Callaway to run, with the goal of hurting Brian Jean’s

campaign. Kenney denies that. He asks hotly why anybody would believe a person “whose campaign beat a Calgary journalist almost to the point of unconsciousness.” Last August, journalist and radio host Kumar Sharma was hit and kicked by as many as seven men at a concert. Before that, he said, he’d been threatened by men affiliated with Happy Mann’s campaign for a UCP nomination. The UCP then disqualified Mann. Kenney feels that’s when the grapes went sour. Of course, there is solid evidence something funny was going on with leadership donations. Gibson has already fined people for supporting Callaway with funds supplied by someone else, and for impeding the s u b s e q u e n t investigation. This issue is burning like a slow fuse right up to the election call. It helps explain why the UCP wants to get the voting over with. And why the NDP might prefer to wait a while.

Native Village/ Country, parents’ background I hail from Village Dhakarba, District Patiala, Punjab, India. My father was Zaildar in Punjab Irrigation Department and mother was stay home mum. Your early education I did Bachelor of Arts, Diploma in Library Science from Panjabi University, Patiala and Machinist certification. When & why you came to Canada? We have acquired two houses near Gurudwara to provide temporary accommodation besides food and incidental expenses to needy. Also, arrange for required medicines. Gurudwara has been organizing Blood Donation Camps on the regular basis and every year besides donating food to The Food Bank, we fundraise on the auspicious occasion of Guru Nanak Ji birthday to the tune of $60,000 to $80,000 to donate to The Food Bank. We also help the people in distress with funeral expenses. Every year, we celebrate Christmas and New Year with homeless. Our volunteers played very important role during Fort McMurray wildfire by providing free ride, food and other essentials. What Sikh temple is doing to refrain youth from Club culture and Drug/alcohol abuse? We organize youth camps on a regular basis to ensure that our youth remain focussed and glued to our rich heritage and culture. Recently, we have recruited the Principal of Punjabi School who has been born and raised in Canada and fully understands both cultures. Soon, we will be starting counselling sessions. Some Indo-Canadian politicians are using religion and religious places for political mileage. What are your views? We definitely need good politicians to serve public. However, our Dharam Sthan cannot align with any political party and its representatives. Of course, we allow probable to get introduced to Sangat and exchange greetings. Many inter-caste/religion/racial marriages are taking place. How you react to this situation? World is in for big change. I have personal belief that possibility of successful marriage is more in own culture. We do our best to ensure the norms of Shaddi are very well explained for all the marriages solemnized at Sikh Temple. However, at the end of the day, its happiness of both the partners which prevail upon and carry paramount importance. Your regret in life “Jahan Jaaye Wahan Sahela” The whole world is Global village. Also, I will keep on pondering that our youth should be flag bearer of our rich culture. Were you ever discriminated? Hmmm. Not really. What you miss in Canada? Our roots back home. My regular obeisance at Golden Temple and Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib. Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the martyrdom of Chhotte Sahibzade of Guru Gobind Singh Ji who were bricked-up alive in 1705 will always guide us to tread the path of truthfulness and humility. Are you happy in Canada? Absolutely. Why? Avenues of growth and practise of human rights are unmatchable by any other country. Any comments on Canada’s weather Punjabis are hardworking lot. We survive from + 55 to – 55 *C. Weather is no consideration provided we get food on table. Any comments on Canada’s culture Canada is a bouquet of various cultures brought in by immigrants. Every society has good as well as evil. We should pick the best ones and move from there. Are you willing to help new immigrants? Anytime. How? I as an individual has limited to offer. Yes, we as a team of volunteers and with the backing of our Gurudwara has every possible solution to newcomers’ issues. I have already outlined above as to what facilities we provide. BJP moves EC to ensure fair voting in West Bengal New Delhi-A BJP delegation on Wednesday approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) demanding maintenance of law and order in the state during the upcoming elections. Bengal will vote in seven phases between April 11 and May 19. Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Nirmala Sitharaman and JP Nadda were among those who met with ECI officials in New Delhi and demanded that West Bengal be declared a "super sensitive" state during these polls. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said: "Bengal's track record in free and fair elections is very deplorable. Recently we saw 100 people were killed in the local body and gram panchayat elections. We saw how

15 March, 2019

ballot papers were sought to be stamped even during counting. We've seen victorious candidates are not even allowed to enter Bengal. We have seen how the helicopters of the president of the ruling party, and chief ministers were not allowed to land." West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee hit back by saying: "BJP wants to control me? Are they so afraid of me? I am really aston-

ished. What is the reason for such a demand? This is an insult to the people of Bengal." The BJP has demanded that central forces be deployed in every booth in Bengal for polling and that the deployment be done on the recommendation of the observers. "BJP wants CISF and CRPF to guard their leaders, not the country. Does the BJP think there is President's rule in Bengal? We believe in fed-

eral structure. Look at their audacity!" Mamata said. The BJP asked the ECI not to deploy any state officers considered close to the ruling dispensation on election duty. "There are certain officers who are known to be very biased towards the ruling dispensation. We've given their names. They should be withdrawn from election-related work," Prasad said.

Why China is doing well in defence manufacturing A

recent

report

by

Stockholm

International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) notes that India’s arms imports decreased by 24% between 2009-13 and 2014-18, and, as a result, it is no longer the world’s largest defence importer. However, it is too early to celebrate. The reduction in arms imports has little to do with India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. The most likely causes for the sharp reduction in imports include delay in, as the Sipri report notes, “deliveries of arms produced under licence from foreign suppliers, such as combat aircraft ordered from Russia in 2001 and submarines ordered from France in 2008”. India’s attempt to bolster indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities has seen several false starts. The country aims to be among the world’s five top arms producer by 2025. In order to achieve this ambitious goal, we should learn from our northern neighbour, China, which has made impressive strides as a defence manufacturer and exporter. After having been an arms importer for much of its existence, Communist China is now the world’s fifth largest defence exporter. It still imports a lot — China is the world’s sixth largest arms importer — but it has been a net arms exporter for much of this decade. Seven Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs), according to International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), were among top 20 defence production firms in terms of arms sales in 2016. These SOEs have been helped by a captive domestic market. However, they have done well on exports too, especially when one takes into the account that some of the largest arms importers like India, South Korea, Vietnam and Australia do not buy Chinese arms for political reasons. China’s success flows from its massive investment in research and development

CULTURE CURRY

(R&D) — well over 2% of GDP now. Of late, it has also embraced private companies’ role in defence production.

Overcompensation and consumption: Guilty or not-guilty?

India should quickly embark on the path to create a level playing field between defence public sector units and private companies. It should increase its budget outlays on R&D, temper its expectations on transfer of technology from foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and make the country a more attractive destination for manufacturing firms in general. Our body reacts to stress by overcompensating, so that it can handle stress again in the future. Therefore, beginners at any sport see great improvement when starting their programs. In order for

your body to overcompensate, you must load it with a greater amount than was already encountered. This principle is the reason that people plateau in their gains over time. It becomes more and more difficult to stress the body to a point where it has not been stressed before. The mind too has an over compensation psychology. You’re with someone you’ve just met, and within seconds you feel that there’s something wrong with you.Not only does she seem

perfectly outfitted, but in simply introducing herself, she’s made it clear that she’s got an important job and a perfect family life, and that she associates with all the right people. Whether it’s a social contact or a business interaction, people who want everyone to know how big they are can make the rest of us feel pretty small. According to Adler, people who feel inferior go about their days overcompen sating through what he called “striving for superiority.” This

striving for superiority as a feature of narcissistic personality disorder, is a deviation in normal development that results in a person’s constant search to boost selfesteem. Adler’s motivation to investigate this was from personal experience. He was a very sickly child, unable to walk till he was four because of rickets. He was a victim of pneumonia as well as a series of accidents. Compensation is a strategy whereby one covers up, consciously

or unconsciously, weaknesses, frustrations, desires, or feelings of inadequacy or incompetence in one life area through the gratification in another area. Positive compensations may help one to overcome one’s difficulties. On the other hand, n e g a t i v e compensations do not. What about negative compensation? Overcompensation, characterized by superiority, leads to striving for power, dominance, selfesteem, and selfdevaluation. Under compensation includes a demand for help, leads to a lack of courage and a fear for life. When overcompensation is undertaken solely to control, dominate and exert one’s superiority over others and not for excelling to feel good about oneself, but doing so to put others down, it is very detrimental. It actually prevents a person from addressing the issues from which the feelings of inferiority and inadequacies stem. Christopher Lasch, an

American historian and social critic wrote in his book, The Culture of Narcissism that North American society is narcissistic, w o r s h i p e d consumption, feared and ignored dependency, aging, and death and is “fascinated” with fame. These superficial pursuits make society lose touch with reality and values. Consumption can be a means of compensation where we use goods to convey human relationships, parents make up for “bad” conditions (poverty, abuse ...) with gifts etc. It is impossible to be a great marathon runner and an Olympic weightlifter at once. It’s not going to work because the kind of training it takes to create great endurance removes from your ability to lift heavy weights. A jack of all trades is a master of none. So, keep your focal points and priorities clear and undistracted for deep impact and you will continue to grow.
