A special new spot for Indian food in #yegtown: Haweli A nice buffet
Hyderabadi Chicken Biriyani
Kesariya Rice Kheer
“Haweli,” suggests a private royal residence, a place tucked deep in a palacedoes lend a certain ambiance romantic and rich. As you step in, the décor with deep colours and tapestry beckon you into another era. We meet the chef, Sanju who welcomes us into a cube, we settle into comfortably. The owner Manny is
busy elsewhere but the place seems busy. Sanju offers us a Strawberry Mojito Mocktail which is fresh and flavourful if not for the fruit pieces on your tongue interfering with the savouring. The entrees roll in: Shashlik Paneer Tikka and Punjabi Chicken Tikka, both doing justice to their names. Sizzling! The first bite into the soft luscious paneer as it plays with the juices on my
tongue, yumm! I take a quick dash at the Chicken Tikka and it is as delectable. Impressive for starters. The Garlic Naan and Tandoori Roti basket are served piping hot as the whiff assaults my nostrils with an irresistible aroma. The Grand Trunk Road with its dhabas is famous world wide for its goat curries and now you don’t have to travel the seven seas to sample those flavours, thanks to Haweli, you can try it

right here in #yegtown. The goat curry with the breads made our dinner totally worth our while. The Hyderabadi Chicken Biriyani is a different story however. A little disappointing not as juicy and luscious as I know. The Hyderabadis I know tout their biriyanis with so much pride. The Kesariya Rice Kheer wasn’t to kill for either, I’m sure the chef could do better if he was in a better

We closed with a nice hot cup of masala chai which settles any overfull tummy. You can never go wrong with the chai here. I could’ve had a few. We could’ve critiqued more of the delectable dishes if only the portions weren’t as large.
Come to Haweli with a big appetite, especially if you plan on the buffet. Haweli has musical nights and organises parties where families may book the place to themselves. With their great variety to sample from, you won’t be disappointed.

UCP Unity Descend Inevitable Edmonton (ATB): Conservatives earnestly believe that with a stark right-left choice the NDP will now start to fade and lose most of its 25 seats in the next election. Let us review conservative heyday when the old PC party captured almost all the seats in the legislature. In the great walkover of 1982, for instance, the count was PC, 75; NDP, 2; Independent, 2. That is possible, of course. In Alberta, almost anything is. The UCP could very well rule for many terms. But Opposition Leader Rachel Notley shows no desire to fold the tent. She correctly says, with a rare hint of immodesty, that as a former premier she is probably the bestknown Alberta opposition leader ever. She also notes that her party won more votes in losing the 2019 election (619,149) than it did
winning the 2015 election (604,518). The party’s Edmonton base is large and solid. The NDP even retained three Calgary seats after four years of hard recession and the hollowing out of the downtown. That doesn’t mean NDP victory, as long as conservatives stay united. But will they? Premier Jason Kenney’s party is already showing signs of internal fragility. The chief one is tortured ambiguity over social issues like gay-
s t r a i g h t alliances and conversion therapy. Eventually, we’ll see it spread to abortion too. The UCP constantly affirms tolerance while stopping short of legislation that fully guarantees it. This is partly a rejection of what the UCP considers leftwing baiting — on conversion therapy, especially — but it’s also a sign of some MLAs’ convictions colliding uncomfortably with social change. Many UCP MLAs will not agree to more than the social measures the
UCP is adopting. Were Kenney to deny those feelings, he’d have a unity problem right now. If these issues ever collide with economic differences, there will be trouble. A decade ago Wildrose broke away from the PCs, partly because former premier Ed Stelmach wanted to review oil and gas royalties. In Western Canada, and especially Alberta, these conservative splits are virtually inevitable. Mount Royal University professors Duane Bratt and Bruce Foster have written a fascinating paper subtitled The Fragility of a ‘Big Tent’ Conservative Party. Their conclusions, backed by copious research and examples, are Conservative parties only fracture when they’re in power, They only reunite when they’re out of power and want to get back in;
When they fracture, the reasons are fights over ideology, policy and platforms; When they reunite, the reasons are pragmatic — getting back in charge, defeating a hated enemy. Bratt and Foster note that this doesn’t happen in other major democracies with first-past-the-post systems: the U.S., Australia, the U.K. and New Zealand. Even within Canada, this regular breakdown and re-creation is purely a western thing. From Ontario to the Atlantic, people are generally content to switch between traditional parties, not smash their own and reinvent them. “Not content to endure the economic, ideological or party system status quo to the extent of their eastern cousins, westerners have typically demonstrated a
willingness to engage in a form of creative destruction of the party system,” write Bratt and Foster. They also point out that such breakdowns and reunions rarely happen in centrist parties. The Alberta NDP and Liberals could have united years ago to create a formidable centre-left party. But that was unthinkable to both of them. More recently, some in the Alberta Party and provincial Liberal party tried to effect a merger. It went nowhere. Both parties have now vanished from the legislature. Western conservatives, by contrast, revive and survive though breakdowns, brawls, and eventual reunion. The UCP is now at the start of the breakdown cycle. Just give them time.

ICJ asks Pak to take Jadhav off death row The Hague/New Delhi ( A T B ) - T h e International Court of Justice (ICJ) today ordered Pakistan to make an “effective review and reconsideration” of the conviction and death sentence of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav and also grant consular access, in a verdict that was hailed in India as a “big victory” for the country. In a reprieve for Jadhav, 49, a retired Indian Navy officer sentenced to death by a Pakistan military court on charges of “espionage and terrorism” after a closed trial in April 2017, a 16-member Bench by a 15-1 vote continued the stay on the execution and held Islamabad violated New Delhi’s rights to consular visits after his arrest.A Chinese judge was part of the
majority verdict, while the ad hoc judge from Pakistan on the Bench, headed by President of the Court Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf of Somalia, gave a dissenting opinion. Rejecting Pakistan’s objection to admissibility of the Indian application in the case, the court in its 42-page order held that “a continued stay of execution constitutes an indispensable condition for the effective review” of the sentence of Jadhav that had strained relations between the two neighbouring countries. The Bench, however, rejected some remedies sought by India, including annulment of the military court’s decision convicting Jadhav, his release and safe passage to India.

Not quite made in heaven The heart has its reasons but unfortunately it has to contend with more worldly considerations. Caste is one of them in a society that remains by and large traditional and conservative. The instance in which the Dalit husband of a BJP MLA’s daughter was beaten up inside the High Court complex at Prayagraj serves as a reminder of this. In an irony, the incident took place soon after the court asked the police to provide security to the couple as the inter-caste marriage had been disapproved of by the woman’s Brahmin family. A second incident took place when a couple from Amroha, also in UP, was kidnapped from near the court when they were on their way to file a plea seeking security. Both belong to a minority community. Despite the advances in education, economic
empowerment,
communication and interaction, intercaste marriages are generally frowned upon by families who are apprehensive of veering off from a set pattern of conformity. Marriage in which one of the partners is from a lower caste meets with even greater opposition, for it challenges notions of superiority and deeply entrenched traditions. It is not that intercaste marriages do not take place and that all of them are disapproved of by the families. In fact, many such alliances take place where the man and the woman, educated and in modern occupations, take the decision based on compatibility. Families, to be fair to them, look for some measure of stability and economic self-sufficiency for the couple to be independent and guard against a failing marriage, and gradually acquiesce when these are in place. But while inter-caste marriage can be an antidote to the dowry system, its acceptance, especially in traditional societies, remains an uphill task. Instances of ‘honour’ killing and runaway couples seeking protection are an example of this. The incidents have taken place at a time when a mainstream film, Article 15, though not about inter-caste

Urbanisation has grown at an unprecedented rate, and with over half the world’s population now residing in cities, many people don’t have access to the green landscapes in which the human species evolved. Urban greenspaces are critical to healthy living, both physically and mentally. There may also be salutogenic effects on mental health and wellbeing, such as increased attention, feelings of happiness and reduced stress.
The effect is real, and over the years, scientists have shown that nature can provide stress relief, increase social interaction, encourage physical exercise and even help soothe mental illness. This effect isn’t limited to forests or beaches that may be miles away. Just about any kind of green space— from hiking trails and coastlines to soccer fields and local parks—can make you happier and boost your mental health, as long as it has a few key qualities. A group of researchers in the Netherlands found that people who think of their local green spaces as more accessible and usable felt more satisfied with their neighborhood, regardless of the
amount of green space they had. Neighborhood satisfaction was associated with happiness, the r e s e a r c h e r s said.Residents reported better mental health and more emotional attachment to local greenery when they had higher quality green spaces. Some research has linked specific types of green spaces— broadleaf woods, parks that feature water and areas with significant biodiversity, for example—to good health. If you’re looking to be awed by nature’s beauty, these aesthetic factors can be important. Dr. Andrew Lee, a public health researcher at the University of Sheffield in England, who has conducted large
reviews of greenspace research, says the functionality of parks is paramount for making people feel happy. “If it’s a social space, where people meet together and chat and go on walks, that kind of social contact and interaction builds social networks,” Lee says. Parks without those features do the opposite. If a green space is difficult to get to, has poor lighting or is not clean, it may be seen as unsafe or inaccessible and probably wouldn’t boost a visitor’s mood,
www.asiantribune.ca. Also, follow us on twitter @AsianTribuneEdm
explains Lee. The secret to using nature as a mood booster in these situations. For some people, that may be going to a quiet park to escape their daily routine, while others use nature to challenge themselves with activities like mountain biking or trekking. Still others may find comfort in nature when they interact with animals or listen to soft bird sounds by a gurgling mountain brook. There is adequate evidence for associations between urban greenspace
and life satisfaction. G r e e n s p a c e accessibility should be measured more specifically, using individual travel distances, spatial methods of analysis, to better understand how greenspaces should be designed and incorporated into urban environments. Finally, it is summer in AB and we can actually take our dogs on long walks romping on the green under the bright sky. How does a gloomy day, a sunny day in green spaces or a rainy day affect your mood? Write to us at mary@asiantribune.ca.

BRAIN DRAIN: INDIA’s CONSTANT CONUNDRUM PREM KUMAR, 6207-144 Street, Edmonton, Canada T6H 4H8 The East India Company of England came to India in the 1600s. India was then a richer nation than Britain. It had a booming trade in agricultural goods and cottage industry with the countries on both sides of the Indian Ocean. When the British left India in 1947, India was one of the poorest nations in the world. However, since Independence India has steadily progressed. It is now the world’s largest democracy. It has established a host of universities and technical institutes. Over time, Indian students have sought post-graduate degrees abroad, particularly in the USA. Admission to an American university is highly competitive. By one estimate, some four lakh Indians have graduated from American/foreign universities in the coveted fields: c o m p u t e r s ,
engineering, healthcare, finance and management. This large pool of specialists has sought to work in the USA as Foreign Temporary Workers rather than return home. Only a limited number gets the Green Card yearly. It is a step towards American citizenship. It remains the cherished dream of most foreign workers. The waiting list is cruelly long. The group of Indians working in the USA without citizenship status may be broadly termed as ‘BRAIN DRAIN’. One remarkable fact about Indian students in the USA is that most of them are granted scholarships, fee exemptions, or some other ‘financial assistance’ by the A m e r i c a n universities. For this generosity, India is eternally grateful. The cost of American education is beyond the means of a middle-class Indian family.
The long waiting list for the Green Card has one positive impact. Indian temporary workers have meticulously saved and remitted home huge sums of foreign exchange. It has consistently boosted India’s foreign reserves. On the other hand, Indian spouses living with their husbands in the U.S. have often s u f f e r e d discrimination in terms of wages and type of work permitted. N E W I M M I G R AT I O N POLICY: President Trump has expressed his diverse views on the subject. Once he said that the foreign workers should be ordered to leave. However, the computer and other industries likely to be affected, voiced their concern. The administration relented. The fact is the foreign workers provide the technical manpower not a v a i l a b l e domestically, in numbers and at a price. Lately, the
president has unveiled a new meritbased and pointbased immigration policy which replaces the existing Green Card system. It substantially hikes the quota for young and highly-skilled workers from 12 to 57 percent, a move likely to benefit thousands of Indian professionals. The president said he was proposing a meritbased immigration system wherein permanent legal residency would be given based on points for age, knowledge, job opportunities. ‘We discriminate against genius and discriminate against brilliance’. Once the new law comes into force, ‘the exceptional students and workers will stay, flourish, and thrive in America.’ It seems the new immigration policy will greatly improve IndiaAmerica relations. Presently, the Indian government is a mere supplicant on behalf of the Indian temporary worker. But as the number of Indian voters in America increases with the
new policy, Indian government will have a greater influence with the American decision makers. In due course, many Indians will be elected to American legislatures and will occupy diverse positions of power. CONCLUSION: Indians living in America under the new immigration rules will no longer be slighted but praised. The term brain-drain will connote merit exported from India to America. The two countries will have a wider scope for cooperation and mutual benefit. It creates an opportunity for the Indian government to attract foreign exchange by giving generous terms to the foreign-based Indians. Tourism will increase as well. It is not inconceivable that an Indian who becomes a newly minted American citizen would come home to start a ‘made in India’ enterprise. To quote President Obama: who knowns the future president of the USA would be a woman, a Mexican or an Indian.
UK envoy said Trump ditched Iran deal to spite Obama: Report London-Britain’s ambassador to Washington believed US President Donald Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal because it was associated with his predecessor Barack Obama, according to leaked documents published on Saturday. “The administration is set upon an act of diplomatic vandalism, seemingly for ideological and personality reasons—it was Obama’s deal,” ambassador Kim Darroch wrote in a diplomatic cable in May 2018. The cable was included in a second batch of leaked reports published by the Mail on Sunday newspaper, the first of which caused Darroch to resign earlier this week. Separately, the Sunday Times reported that a g o v e r n m e n t investigation into the leak had identified a civil servant as the person responsible. Working with officials from the National Cyber Security Centre, part of spy agency GCHQ, and MI6, the probe has homed in on a suspect who had access to historical Foreign Office files, the paper said.
www.asiantribune.ca. Also, follow us on twitter @AsianTribuneEdm
The first leaked reports authored by Darroch were published last weekend, causing major turmoil between Britain and its closest ally. The ambassador was reported to have described the White House as “inept”, prompting Trump to claim the ambassador was a “pompous fool” whom he would no longer deal with. Darroch resigned on Wednesday, saying it was now “impossible” to do his job. In May 2018, Britain’s then-foreign minister Boris Johnson went to Washington to try to persuade Trump not to abandon the Iran deal. In a cable sent afterwards, Darroch reportedly indicated there were divisions in Trump’s team over the decision, and criticised the White House for a lack of long-term strategy. “They can’t articulate any ‘day-after’ strategy; and contacts with State Department this morning suggest no sort of plan for reaching out to partners and allies, whether in Europe or the region,” he wrote. He reported back that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, during his
talks with Johnson, “did some subtle distancing by talking throughout about ‘the President’s decision’”. The newspaper reported that, according to Darroch, Pompeo also hinted that he had tried but failed to “sell” a revised text to Trump. In 2015, the United States, China, Britain, France, Russia and Germany signed a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear programme in exchange for a partial lifting of international economic sanctions. Trump had long been critical of the deal and withdrew the United States on May 8, 2018. As well as a g o v e r n m e n t investigation into the leaks, police are also looking into a potential breach of the Official Secrets Act. London’s Metropolitan Police sparked w i d e s p r e a d condemnation on Saturday after a warning to journalists that publishing leaked documents could be a criminal matter. Johnson, who is now in the race to succeed May as prime minister, said that prosecuting media outlets would have a “chilling effect on public debate”.
