Humanely Put the Cash Cow Down-Mason Edmonton (ATB): The usual hot button issues are trotted out, even where there may not be any real issue at all. Take the latest attempt to placate voters with the NDP’s very blatant attempt to curry favour with drivers who have been dinged by photo radar cameras, in other words pretty well everyone licensed to drive in the province. Transportation Minister Brian Mason last week announced new rules that would “humanely put the cash cow down.” A third-party report says photo radar raises about $220 million a year while reducing collisions by about 1.4 per cent. There’s no question photo radar is a cash cow — only because every single driver caught is breaking the law. If you don’t speed, you starve the cow. It’s that simple. Most of the money raised is also not spent frivolously but goes to local law enforcement. It baffles us that a minister of the Crown is willing to sacrifice safety by handcuffing
legitimate attempts to reduce the roadway culture of speed. (To be fair, police handheld radar will continue.) As a former bus driver, Mason must know that there are too many aggressive, speeding drivers on our roads. As transportation minister, Mason must know that many studies around the world show that photo radar can work. A review of 28 radar studies found a reduction in speed and collisions in every case. The province’s own annual statistics for 2016 show nearly onequarter of drivers in fatal collisions were reported as travelling at an unsafe speed. Collisions involving those 1,194 speeding drivers resulted in 72 fatalities.
However, Mason is willing to end photo radar on straight highways, unless proven to be a hazard, and at areas that generate a lot of money but don’t improve traffic safety. How is this illogical train of thought even possible? Besides, all those speeders are still breaking the law. Speeding is speeding, no matter where it occurs and how it is caught. Speed reduces driver reaction time; speed increases the danger to law-abiding drivers; speed encourages impatience and aggression. If you’re looking for common sense on the issue from the man leading the polls to be the next premier, you’ll be sorely disappointed. “We’ll go significantly further in constraining municipalities that use this as a cash cow,” said UCP Leader Jason Kenney, also jumping on the bovine bucks bandwagon. Governments in Canada traditionally do very little to halt the carnage on the roads. Bad drivers are lightly
punished. Highways seem to be built with too much attention to costs and not enough to safety. We as a society seem to accept the traffic death toll, which is far higher than our homicide toll. Politicians take their cue from this. Kudos to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association for noting that safety is “of the utmost importance” and rejecting the “finger-pointing” of the senior government. No doubt, the cities are also worried about losing revenue for their police departments. Calgary earned $38 million in 2016-17; Edmonton, almost $51 million. But that’s peanuts compared to saving lives. We prefer to see photo radar as an opportunity to encourage drivers to pay attention and slow down. If it’s failing in that purpose, add more photo radar cameras and increase the fines. Just don’t play politics with our safety.

Liberals remain ‘big’ gainers despite Jagmeet’s victory in British Columbia Vancouver (ATB)-The entry of NDP leader Jagmeet Singh Jimmy Dhaliwal in the House of Commons via his Burnaby South (Vancouver) victory notwithstanding, the Liberals have regained their bastion on Outermont in Quebec in spite of the Justin Trudeau government having been pushed to the wall over the SNCLavalin scandal. The Outermont seat in Montreal had always been a Liberal bastion before it was snatched away by senior NDP leader Thomas Mulcair in 2007. From that point, the fall of the Liberals and the rise of the NDP in Quebec had turned steady. Not only in Quebec where they gained but there was also good news for the Liberals on Monday night. The Montreal riding of Outremont had been a Liberal bastion before Thomas Mulcair snatched it away in a 2007 by-election for the New Democrats, foreshadowing the rise of the NDP and the collapse of the Liberals in Quebec. It was a different matter that the Liberals had bounced back in Quebec in 2015. But the resounding
Liberal victory with a huge 40 per cent vote share has started indicating that all of remaining 14 NDP seats have turned vulnerable as far as the forthcoming October 2019 federal polls were concerned. The bypolls have brought forth a bittersweet bag to savour and to deride. The good part was that after remaining without a seat for 16 months, Jagmeet Singh will finally be staging his entry in the House of Commons. He will have all the opportunities to make his ground for the forthcoming polls by punching the Trudeau government over the SNC-Lavalin scandal wherein a Quebecbased multinational was
allegedly favoured by the Truduea regime. The burning issue could even give Jagmeet a new trajectory from where he would have the opportunity to speak from national platform and in capacity of a national leader. But what the negative outcome of the bypolls for the NDP was that the party has turned ‘out of game’ in Quebec where it had high hopes to establish its base. The poll outcome throws out only one strong indication and it was that the NDP once again was poised to end up as a third force in the October federal polls. It appears that instead of doing any electoral harm, the SNC-Lavalin affair rather helped Liberals in Quebec.
Since, the SNC has its base in Quebec, the larger part of the voters might have thought that any adverse situation for the multinational and in a way for the Liberals could lead to loss of a large number of jobs in the province. The poll outcome in York-Simcoe seat on the northern edge of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have suggested that the country might have been run by the Liberals but, the Conservatives were still a force to reckon with. The seat has largely been favouring the Conservatives since 2004 and the bypoll has only reassured the party leadership that it has nothing to worry in the near future—not at least till the October polls.

Is it time for IndiaPakistan diplomacy? After Pulwama, India was outraged. And New Delhi rightly changed the rules of engagement with Pakistan and showed that Islamabad’s strategy of using non-State terror groups to wage an assymetric war comes at a price. The decision to use air strikes to target a Jaishe-Mohammed terror camp was the correct one. The Pakistani deep State needed to understand that this is a new India; an impatient India, which will not continue to absorb attacks sponsored by them. It will not get bullied by nuclear blackmail; it will push the envelope with retaliatory responses or ‘pre-emptive strikes’; and it has the support of a large section of the international community in this battle against terror. The Narendra Modi government laid out new red lines, executed a successful and proportional mission, and played its diplomatic cards well. Pakistan was rattled on Tuesday. As a sovereign state, whose very identity and ideological rationale is based on its opposition of India, the strikes deep in its territory dealt a humiliating blow. In a polity with an all-powerful army, it raised serious questions about Pakistan’s defence abilities. The strikes generated domestic pressure on the regime to respond. This, we believe, was the wrong lesson for Islamabad to draw. What it should have learnt is that the time to back terror groups is now over. And if it does not act against them, India will. But once it had decided to retaliate to cater to its own domestic constituency, Pakistan went ahead with an air offensive across the Line of Control on Wednesday morning. In the process, both sides shot down each other ’s fighters. The Pakistanis also captured one Indian Air Force pilot. It is now time to step back. The reality is that India demonstrated its capability in a measured way and mobilised all major international powers against the use of terror. It redefined the nuclear threshold. And while it will be a long haul, it has initiated a process to change the cost-benefit calculus in Pakistan about the sponsorship of terror. At the same time, Islamabad, with its symbolic response, can show its domestic constituency that it takes attacks on sovereignty seriously. Both sides need to think about the escalatory ladder. A war will extract tremendous costs and it is time for diplomacy to take over. The roadmap is clear. A back-channel and quiet process of negotiation between both sides must kick off. Pakistan must, immediately, hand over Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, to India. It must then categorically commit to not allowing Pakistani soil for anti-Indian activities. The international community must firmly pressure Pakistan in this direction and seek an enforceable mechanism to judge its future actions. India can then reiterate that it has no intention of prolonging the conflict; its actions were measured and will continue to be measured, as long as Islamabad fulfils its promise of cracking down on terror. There is a narrow window at the moment to de-escalate. It is time to grab it. If Pakistan doesn’t see it that way, the new India has indicated its willingness to go the distance. CULTURE CURRY
Political Correctness: Yay or Nay?
Mary Thomas Associate Editor, Asian Tribune
Social media is rife with accounts of celebrities, leaders and everyday people being penalised for intolerance. Everyone is under extreme
pressure to remain politically correct —to make sure they don’t say anything that could be construed as “offensive.” None of us expect a life where we will never be offended or sheltered from conflict or hurt feelings. However, many self-appointed saviors are trying to make this a reality, through aggressive speech codes, legal rulings and corporate policies. Political
Correctness (PC) originally flowered in academia spread like a virus through government and corporate worlds. It has devolved into a tyranny of the most offended person in the room. I’ve tried to play nice, but I genuinely don’t care if you’re offended. And, please don’t worry about offending me in the comments section. I believe this idea of political correctness is harmful
and detrimental to society. While people are constantly getting offended over minor transgressions, it delegitimizes real problems. That’s not to say that people can say anything they want without consequences, especially if it’s racist or hateful. The true issue lies where people are forced to censor their speech for the convenience of another. When people are forced to account

for their own personal beliefs, I feel that is when political correctness goes too far. At Pitzer College, a student sent out an email expressing her distress at seeing white girls wear hoop earrings, as it’s culturally offensive to “black and brown bodies who typically wear hooped earrings.” What about the impact of genderneutral bathrooms on 90% girls who prefer to not have boys in their washrooms? What one wears is notto be determined by the opinions of others, unless it is purposefully and explicitly targeting a group in a hateful and threatening manner. Cultural appropriation, while it exists, shouldn’t be used to control how a group of people dress. Not everything that comes out of a person’s mouth is indicative of their true beliefs or values. Unless what someone says is truly
harmful or malicious, it might be good to let people make mistakes and learn from what they say. Because everyone is so afraid of offending each other, people have lost the ability to enjoy a laugh at a goof of a friend, share their true opinions or views for fear of backlash. It has stifled discourse of differing opinions, while creating a space where people are sheltered from potentially distressing views. On the other side of the spectrum, we hear the loudest voices of PC gone mad from right wing fundamentalist leaders like Trump who speak the crudest things from the pulpit. Like everything else, culture will be defined by where we draw the line between tolerance and free speech. Let’s ask ourselves what is the reality we choose to create for tomorrow? What is and is not acceptable? Write to us at mary@asiantribune.ca

You are swift and strong while making professional moves and business arrangements this week! You have a youthful outlook and energy that attracts enthusiastic and creative people in your field of work. You associate with supportive professionals and move ahead forcefully achieving goals and targets without procrastinating or waiting for anything. Personal relationships are loving and romantic yet there can be ego clashes or difference of opinion. It’s important to remain in touch with your sense of humour that gets you through difficult situations and to unapproachable people.
It’s best to take stock of situations and put some energy into making changes and achieving goals this week. You have been patient and loving in emotional relationships but now need some clarity and commitment. Health needs watching and finances need to be managed. Beware of abandoning success in a professional project due to a general decline of interest in anything. You need to be consistent and persistent for a while to achieve stability and material gain. A beloved supports you through ups and downs. Let go rather than hang on to anything that is finished.
The past gets wiped out by itself, without any effort or regret, once you make a new beginning in any aspect. New beginnings take the shape and plan you assign to them so you need to be total in the moment and allow creativity to happen spontaneously. Personal relationships are rejuvenated with new feelings, sensitivity, awareness and joy. Breakthrough old patterns that the mind is caught up in and take a fresh and unprejudiced look at personal and professional issues! A simple and straight forward approach to a complicated family situation may just be the answer you have been searching for.
Your individualistic and original approach brings success in a creative project. You are not afraid of expressing brilliant ideas even if they arouse controversy to begin with. A daughter may need your support to make a new beginning. It is important to be playful and non-serious to welcome with open arms something wonderful which is on the horizon.
You feel hopeless about personal and professional aspects but nothing so negative is happening - fortify yourself and change your attitude. Worry about a health problem or financial loss is only getting you down; you must realize that things are not as bad as they look to you in the moment. There is no need to feel oppressed and suffer but stand up for yourself and get free of limitations and restrictions. Beware of a subtle and crafty person who may talk you into a losing proposition. Your patience and faithfulness in personal relationships brings you love and support in abundance.
You are likely to travel and indulge in multifarious activity. It’s a time of duality when choices and decisions have to be taken. Your intelligence, humour and gift of repartee’ are scintillating and endear you to associates, friends and family. Media involvement and exposure are gainful and entertaining. You are able to express yourself creatively and achieve success in professional and business projects. Beware of superficial connections and shallow people as they prove to be selfish and unthinking. Stop in the middle of a busy day to become silent and centered within.
There is a natural harmony and ease in personal relationships this week. Happiness blended with success gives you a sense of well-being and satisfaction as there is no strain or stress in professional and personal situations. This is a time of new beginnings for business ventures and professional projects that increase your earning power and wealth. However, it is best to remain aware and persistent in your effort towards achievement or things can go out of hand. Short term loans and projects are available and useful at this point.
You aim for power, status and position in the work area, some of which is likely to come to you this week. You spend a happy time with children and family. Your personal relationship has a special quality of love and romance. Your social life is likely to be busy. Professional and business matters go according to plan and accrue some financial gain. Since you are adventurous and blessed with youthful energy you take a short trip trekking, sailing or indulging in other sporty activity. Don’t allow your emotions to influence professional decisions. Listen to your intuition and trust your feelings.
Its best to be realistic and practical or you can get restless with professional and personal situations this week. Some of your grand ideas may not work the way you expect them to. Things are changing by themselves so allow a bit of space and time to give you direction. Whatever the space you are in right now - sleepy and depressed, or roaring and rebellious - be aware that situations will evolve into something new if you allow it. This is a time of growth and change. Meditation and reflection especially over the week end herald the end of a delusion.
You find yourself immersed in and overflowing with emotion, receiving and giving in personal relationships, emptying and receiving more love from friends and family. Your mind at this point is not busy, preoccupied and aggressive with professional matters or hindering you from listening passively to the rhythm of the heart. Sensitivity, intuition and compassion are the qualities that shine forth at this time, dissolving barriers and judgments and bringing you closer to yourself and others. Be aware of moods in relationships and delusions about business or financial matters at this point.
You feel free and unfettered this week and you go beyond standard practice, rules and regulations in the work area. You may invite a mixed lot of reactions and responses, a few negative and others mostly positive and flattering in nature. You need to trust your intuition in relationships and gut feelings in business matters and act accordingly even if your actions appear to be foolish to others. It is best to allow and take freedom and space in loving relationships for them to continue happily. Rely on yourself, your awareness and that which cannot be taken away from you.
