Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s sprawling desert mansion complete with swimming pool and ZOO is found abandoned
The sprawling desert mansion belonging to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been found abandoned amid claims he is still alive and on the run. A picture of the compound in Manbij, Syria, was posted online by Iraqi fighter Serdar Mahmud who said the property featured a swimming pool and even a zoo with camels and horses. It shows how walls have been built around the estate while the pool has been drained and animals can be seen roaming around in the background. Mahmud pictured himself on the roof of the mansion along with the caption: ‘note the camels and a few horses … Al Baghdadi had a zoo.’ According to The Sun, he also claimed that al-Baghdadi is in Mosul in Iraq - despite earlier reports
that the ISIS mastermind may have been killed. The mansion has been seized by fighters from the Kurdish YPG movement ever since he fled after being wounded during an airstrike on Raqqa in Syria. Last week, reports emerged that the 44year-old may have been killed in the US attack. But there have previously been reports that al-Baghdadi, who proclaimed himself caliph of all Muslims two years ago, has been killed or wounded, which turned out to be untrue. The Abna24 website said al-Baghdadi had been killed last Sunday morning by an air strike in Syria. However, there has been no confirmation of his death by the US or any other coalition powers, who have been targeting the terror group in Syria and Iraq. A Pentagon spokesman told
Daily Mail they were not aware of any ‘high value targets’ having been killed. Baghdadi was born as Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim al-Badri, in 1971 in Samarra, Iraq, to a lower-middle class Sunni family. His tribe claimed to be descended from the Prophet Muhammad. As a youth Baghdadi was a meticulous observer of religious law and could recite the Koran from cover to cover. He then rose from obscurity to lead the world’s most infamous and feared terror group, reviving the organization’s fortunes as it launched its sickening offensive across Syria and Iraq. But he still continues to shun the spotlight for an aura of mystery that adds to his appeal and his lack of public appearances means he still has a unprecedented $10million bounty on his
ISIS jihadis want Trumpto become US President ISIS recruiters are praying for a Donald Trump victory come November because they believe it will help draw more jihadis to their cause, it has been reported. Analysis of known ISIS channels on anonymous messaging app Telegram reveals that Trump is the preferred presidential candidate for extremists, Foreign Affairs magazine reports. That is despite the fact that Trump has made his hardline stance against ISIS a keystone of his campaign while blaming Clinton and Obama’s ‘failed’ policies for creating the group. Writing in a recruitment thread on the app, one ISIS member said: “I ask Allah to deliver America to Trump.” Another added: “The ‘facilitation’ of Trump’s arrival in the White House must be a priority for jihadists at any cost!” In total, the magazine spoke to 12 known members of the terrorist group, and found that Trump is
by far the preferred candidate. Interviewed about their reasons for supporting the Republican candidate, the jihadis gave three explanations. Firstly, they believe that Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric including ‘taking out’ the families of fighters and ‘bombing the s***’ out of Syria plays into their vision of a world in which Islam is at war with the West. Central to ISIS philosophy is the belief - based on Continued on Page 6
head. The situation is in direct contrast to the likes of Osama bin Laden, who regularly appeared in videos sprouting hate messages and was internationally known long before 9/11. Baghdadi’s only appearance came during a slick propaganda video last summer, when he led a sermon in a mosque in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The video - which showed a man with a black and grey beard wearing a black robe and matching turban - came after the group captured Iraq’s second largest city, a terrifying moment which highlighted how quickly the terror group was gaining territory. An Iraqi intelligence report indicates that Baghdadi - who it says has a PhD in Islamic studies and was a professor at Tikrit University - also married a second woman, with whom he had another son. Baghdadi apparently joined the insurgency that erupted after the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, at one point spending time in a U.S military prison in the country’s south. But he did not swear allegiance to the leader of the alQaeda network, Zawahiri, who had urged ISIS to focus on Iraq and leave Syria to al-Nusra. Baghdadi and his fighters openly defied the al-Qaeda chief, leading some commentators to believe he now holds higher prestige among many Islamist militants. As well as the uncertainty surrounding his true identity, his whereabouts are also unclear. Although there were reports he was in Raqqa in Syria - the ISIS stronghold those reports are unconfirmed. In the past year, Baghdadi has been reported wounded multiple times. Last year there were two reports that Baghdadi had been wounded in air strikes, but they turned out to be inaccurate. He also escaped death in December when US jets attacked a two-car convoy on the outskirts of Mosul.

World population may rise to nearly 10 billion by 2050
New York The world population will reach 9.9 billion in 2050, increasing by 33% from an estimated 7.4 billion now, the latest report from the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) has predicted. If the assumptions underlying 2050 projections by the PRB’s World Population Data Sheet are applied to subsequent years, the world population would hit the 10 billion mark in 2053, with set to Asia gain about 900 million to 5.3 billion. “Despite declines in fertility rates around the world, we expect population gains to remain strong enough to take us toward a global population of 10 billion,” said Jeffrey Jordan, president and CEO of PRB. “Significant regional differences remain, though. For example
very low birth rates in Europe will mean population declines there while Africa’s population is expected to double,” said Jordan. PRB’s projections show Africa’s population will reach 2.5 billion by 2050, while the number of people in the Americas will rise by only 223 million to 1.2 billion. Europe registers a decline from 740 million to 728 million. Oceania (which includes Australia and New Zealand) would rise from 40 million to 66 million. The Data Sheet’s midcentury population projections indicate that the combined population of the world’s least developed countries in the world will double by 2050 to 1.9 billion. The population in 29 countries will more than double. Nearly all
of these countries are in Africa. In Niger, the country with the highest birth rate, the population will more than triple. The data showed that, 42 countries will register population declines. These countries are scattered throughout Asia, Latin America and Europe. Some European countries will post significant declines, such as Romania, which is projected to have a population of 14 million in 2050, down from 20 million today, researchers said. The population of the US will be 398 million, up 23% from 324 million. According to the Data Sheet’s estimates of current population, over 25% of the world’s population is under 15 years old. The figure is 41% in least developed countries and 16% in more developed countries. Japan has the oldest population profile, with over a quarter of its citizens older than 65. Qatar and the UAE are at the other end of the spectrum, with each having only 1% over 65. The top ten fertility rates in the world are in sub-Saharan African countries, with nearly all above 6 children per woman, and one topping seven. The fertility rate in the US is 1.8 children per woman, down from 1.9 in 2014. Thirty-three countries in Europe and Asia already have more people over age 65 than under 15.
Ginni Mahi, the 17-yearold Dalit voice from Punjab, is making waves Chandigarh BEHIND the posh Model Town block in Jalandhar, stands the crowded neighbourhood of Abadpura, where a huge section of the Ravidassia community lives. Here, in the serpentine lanes, nestles a small 150 sq-yard house, home to a young voice of freedom and equality. At a time when the flogging of Dalit youths in Una has triggered protests, Ginni Mahi, 17 years old, is raising her voice and asserting her identity in songs that are finding resonance across the country. Mahi hails from the community of Jatavs in Punjab and wears it as a badge of honour. One of her lines goes like this: “Kurbani deno darrde nahin, rehnde hai tayyar, haige asle to wadd Danger Chamar (the one who is not scared to sacrifice, the one who is the real thing is Chamar).” The new voice of ‘Dalit pop’ in the country, Ginni Mahi aka Gurkanwal Bharti, is a YouTube sensation with close to 1 lakh followers. Ready with a new Sufi track on Bulleh Shah and busy with another on Guru Nanak Dev, which she hopes to release in a couple of months, her songs mainly celebrate the lives of Sant Ravidass founder of the sect to which she belongs and Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, and talk about her community. She is also expanding her repertoire, bringing up issues such as female foeticide and
drugs that ail Punjab. Though she has been singing for over a decade, it’s her two albums in the past year, Guruan Di Diwani and Gurpurab Hai Kanshi Wale Da, and her singles, including Fan Baba Saheb Ki and Danger Chamar, that have catapulted her to success. In Fan Baba Saheb Ki, she refers to herself as Main thi Babasaheb di, jine likheya si samvidhaan (I am the daughter of Baba Saheb, who wrote the Constitution), while in Danger Chamar she tries to bridge the caste system, stating that members of her community are dangerous only if injustice is meted out to them. “Baba Saheb spoke for equality and human rights not because he was a Dalit, but because he was an Indian, a Hindustani. He talked about India, gave us rights, empowered us and I salute his fighting spirit,” says Mahi, who puts ‘Bharti’ as her last name to show her “Indian identity”.

arrest of three Canadians, they said on Monday. It was the biggest drug seizure at an airport or a cruise ship in Australia, Tim Fitzgerald, a regional commander at the Australian Border Force, said. Customs officers boarded the vessel and searched cabins with the help of sniffer dogs, they said in a statement. “It was during the search of the cabin ... that we identified a number of suitcases in the cabin itself that were locked. Itemizer or trace technology was used to scan the outside of those suitcases and as a result a number of tests came positive for the presence of cocaine,” Fitzgerald said.
Chandigarh Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Sunday said the ‘tug of war’ in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has exposed the lust of power amongst its leadership in the state. Interacting with media persons in Chandigarh on the sidelines of Sangat Darshan program in Baba Bakala assembly segment, the Chief Minister said there was hardly any parallel in Indian polity when the top leadership of the party has been accused of indulging in corrupt practices, that too, for the sake of party tickets. He said selling of tickets is not the job of political leaders or parties and this reflects that the entire ‘civil war’ in AAP is just aimed at defaming each other to acquire the control of party. Badal said Punjabis are watching this power struggle amongst the AAP leaders, that has torn the party into pieces, just to yearn power. “It is really shameful as it does not behove of any political party or leader to act in such irresponsible manner,” he added. Badal said Shiromani Akali Dal would also announce its candidates at appropriate time for the ensuing state assembly polls in 2017. “We will fight the upcoming elections on the plank of overall
development, peace and communal harmony in the state,” he added. He said the financial condition of state is very sound and the state Congress Chief Captain Amarinder Singh should stop defaming the state by issuing baseless statements. The Punjab Chief Minister alleged that the Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar is “misleading” the people even on issue of debt waiver of farmers. He said that Amarinder is well aware of the fact that
state government could hardly do anything regarding debts by banks but just for the sake of attaining power he is making “false” promises to the people. Badal, while slamming the Congress party, said Congress has irrelevantly meddled in the social, political, economic and even religious affairs of the state. He alleged the Congress government at the centre had “deliberately denied” the state of Punjabi speaking areas, its capital Chandigarh and even its “legitimate share” in river waters.

Turkey invades Syria but ‘caliph’ Baghdadi MIA! Turkey continued execution of ‘Operation Euphrates Shield’ by striking at the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Syrian Kurdish militia backed by the United States in its fight with the so-called Islamic State. Airstrikes from Turkish warplanes killed at least 25 people near the city of Jarablus. Turkey claims that all those killed were all Kurdish terrorists. Other reports claim that dozens of civilians were killed. Besides striking at ISIS, a major objective of Turkey’s invasion into Syria is to prevent further expansion of the region controlled by the Syrian Kurds. As the map with this opinion piece shows, the YPG now controls large regions of northern Syria, including an uninterrupted 400 km (250 mile) stretch of the Syrian-Turkish border

from the eastern frontier with Iraq to the Euphrates River and a pocket of territory in northwestern Syria. The Kurds want to gain control of the region in between, controlling a long strip of land, creating an independent Kurdish state called Rojava. The Turkish military objective is to prevent the Kurds from doing this and to force the YPG in the east to retreat back across the Euphrates River. The Kurds have had some notable military successes recently. It was only a couple of weeks ago that the Syrian Kurds regained control of the city of Manbij from ISIS. Since then, the Kurds began advancing on Jarablus in the east, and on the city of Azaz in the west. After a major ISIS terror attack on a wedding in Gaziantep, a Turkish town near Jarablus, there was a major change in Turkish policy that led to the military invasion of Syria. Operation Euphrates Shield has already prevented the Kurds from taking control of Jarablus, and the Turks have indicated that they intend to drive the Kurds out of Manbij, back across the Euphrates River. The Turks say that they will take control of a region up to 30 kilometers from the border with Turkey and create a ‘safe zone’ for civilians, under the control of the Free Syrian Army (FSA). America may be forced to choose between Turkey and Kurds Turkey’s invasion of Syria so far consists of warplanes, tanks, artillery and the special forces backed by an army of socalled ‘moderate’ Syrian rebels known as the Free Syrian Army or FSA. Turkey is targeting both ISIS and the Kurdish YPG. The United States is an ally of Turkey, which is a member of NATO. The US is also an ally of the YPG, which has been the most effective force fighting ISIS. And the US has also supported the FSA because they were fighting against the forces of the genocidal president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad. The US has been forced to choose between Turkey and the Kurds. In a visit to Ankara on Wednesday, US vice president Joseph Biden said: “We have made it absolutely clear that they (proKurdish forces) must go back across the (Euphrates) River. They cannot and will not, under any circumstances, get American support if they do not keep that commitment.” A big question is whether the Kurds will obey Biden’s mandate. The Kurds have a long history of feeling betrayed by the West, and with an independent state in sight, they may refuse to retreat. Both Russia and Syria’s al-Assad regime approve of the Turkish invasion of northern Syria because it’s the only thing preventing the Kurds from taking control of the entire northern region and declaring the independent Kurdish state of Rojava. Where’s ISIS leader Al-Baghdadi hidding? These are dark days for international jihadists. As ISIS’ grand facade of a “caliphate” crumbles and it devolves into an improvised insurgency capable only of mounting terrorist attacks, you have to wonder: Where in blazes is its selfstyled ‘caliph’ Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi? IHS Inc, the reputed information and analysis firm focused on international security, estimates ISIS has lost 12 percent of its territory just eight months into the year. The so-called caliphate has been steadily
SUNNY BAINS
shrinking since late 2015 when it first suffered military setbacks in 14 percent of its holdings. Unsurprisingly, this period coincided with Russia’s entry into the regional fray on Assad’s side and a renewed interest by the hitherto ambivalent Obama administration in disallowing Moscow from dictating Middle Eastern geopolitics alongside Iran. Elsewhere, Libya’s U.N-recognized leadership in Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, claims ISIS militants are days away from being completely driven out of the port of Sirte. This will severely compromise the group’s plans to expand into North Africa. Spokespersons of the Iraqi government also inform that ISIScontrolled areas in the country’s northwest have dwindled from 40 percent down to 14. ISIS, effectively, is being
radicalized at the Camp Bucca detention facility in Iraq immediately following the US invasion. He soon linked up with AlQaeda Iraq (AQI) chief Abu Musab alZarqawi and slowly worked his way into the Majlis al-Shura of the prototypal IS in Iraq (ISI), eventually ascending to supreme leader in 2010. Al-Baghdadi’s masterstroke, one that sparked his legend, was when he united the patchwork of Islamist militants fighting Assad, America and one another in Syria and Iraq three years later under one, ominous black flag. If ‘caliph’ alBaghdadi is indeed an apparition, this would not be the first time ISIS has cleverly manipulated its media image to cloak the real power-players behind the organization. Befitting a man of mystery like al-
routed across the Middle East yet alBaghdadi still refuses to rally his beleaguered followers. This contrasts sharply with how Al-Qaeda’s leadership has reacted to news of recent reversals. Though ISIS’ media wing al-Furqan has made public three audio recordings attributed to al-Baghdadi since May last year, they all sound like Mullah Mohammad Omar speaking from beyond the grave. I reference, of course, last July when, amid landmark talks in Islamabad between the Taliban and Kabul, the Afghan spy agency NDS leaked news that Mullah Omar, despite his very recent pronouncements through the group’s media cell, had been dead for years. It turned out his (now deceased) deputy Mullah Akhtar Mansour was impersonating him to prevent the movement from splintering. Is alBaghdadi too now a sock puppet for some new ISIS lynchpin? Since intelligence reports suggest he suffered serious, possibly life-threatening, injuries in March. It bears noting that despite ISIS’ wanton brutality at the height of its territorial sway between 2014 and late-2015 designed to dominate headlines worldwide, al-Baghdadi has always been a shadowy figure. Indeed, what little we know of him comes from ISIS propagandists. For example, the 45-year old was once monikered the ‘invisible sheikh’ for hiding his face behind a mask while addressing battlefield commanders and reportedly holds a doctorate in Islamic Studies from Baghdad University. Al-Baghdadi is thought to have been
Baghdadi, many versions of his life story have captivated both mainstream media and the dark web. The most explosive one comes courtesy of unidentified bloggers citing Edward Snowden, the former CIA contractor turned whistleblower, as the source. Their conspiracy theory introduces alBaghdadi as ‘Elliot Shimon’, a man ‘born of two Jewish parents’ and ‘a Mossad agent’ to boot. His mission? To sow discord in the Muslim world using fringe extremists drawn to powerful Islamic symbolism so the Zionists can opportunistically carve out ‘Eretz Israel’ (Greater Israel) from Arab lands with the connivance of traitorous local emirs. Sounds like an Ayatollah fable but wholly unreliable? Russian President Vladimir Putin didn’t seem to think so when in November last year he revealed the role of ‘40 countries’ - a thinly veiled reference to the US, Saudi Arabia and Israel - in spawning and nurturing ISIS. In July 2007, US military spokesperson Brigadier General Kevin Bergner dumbfounded reporters by disclosing that Abdullah Rashid al-Baghdadi - Abu Bakr’s predecessor - could not be hunted down because “he never existed”. Abdullah, Bergner explained, was “a fictional character” voiced by “an elderly actor named Abu Adullah al-Naima.” Why? So the AQI’s new Egyptian chief, Abu Ayub al-Masri, could “mask the dominant role that foreigners play” in ISI while puppeteering from behind the scenes. The incumbent al-Baghdadi may be no different.

No personality is bigger than party: BJP VP Prabhat Jha
It’s sometimes suggested that high ideals and big plans for the future are foiled when ‘life gets in the way’, and that the messy business of living holds us back from achieving our loftiest goals. But how about when commitment to our vision stops us from experiencing life fully? Great entrepreneurs and adventurers often sacrifice their family and friends in pursuit of their dreams. Their closest relationships suffer because of their ambition. Yet it’s possible to strike a balance. Focus your drive and passion on the people who are there for you no matter what. !!! The phrase ‘big-hearted’ is a compliment to describe people who live, give and love to the maximum. But, medically speaking, being big-hearted is not something to be admired. Those suffering from enlarged hearts are rarely in great health. Perhaps this phrase should be a warning to all those with a metaphorically enhanced ventricular capacity. Being too big-hearted can be bad for emotional health too. You can’t say ‘yes’ to everyone who tugs your heartstrings. Be kind and generous but not to your own detriment. Then you can forge a hard-wearing, mutually supportive partnership. !!! When two people share an objective they can work together in harmony. There’s a connection, a willingness to listen and learn from each other that is motivated by the desire to achieve a mutually agreed goal. Sometimes, we forget the value of partnership. We set off on our own journey. It seems simpler. Working with someone else is complicated ... it involves taking time, both to find out what we actually want and then clearly communicating it and, of course, time to listen to the other person. Now comes an opportunity to redefine a partnership in pursuit of a shared dream.
!!! What do you really want? It’s not the same as what you ought to want. We’re supposed to want what society wants us to want. But we’re all idiosyncratic, even if it only goes as far as preferring 2.3 children to 2.4. Be honest about your desires. It’s okay to hanker after something different, if it doesn’t impinge on anyone else’s happiness. Surrounding yourself with the right people will help you understand your feelings. Finding the right person to share your life with will help turning desires into realities. Be brave enough to accept yourself, and you’ll find that you’re much happier for it. !!! We’ve all had bad experiences with restaurant service. Usually we recognize that it’s due to factors beyond our host’s control. But some people make no allowance for the honest mistakes of the overworked and underpaid. To them it’s a personal affront that demands confrontation. A frustrating situation has been stretching your patience and, no, I’m not suggesting that you have no right to feel indignant and frustrated. But you can benefit from giving someone the benefit of the doubt. If you can be kind, and allow for a fresh start - your heart will thank you for it. !!! Someone is challenging the image you want to project of yourself. It may feel threatening, but it’s not an affront. It’s not designed to subvert your authority. In fact, it will only be detrimental if you treat it as such. You simply need to confront it with the mighty tools you have at your disposal: imagination, compassion and integrity. There’s much you can achieve if you adopt the right attitude and trust the reason that’s behind the forces at work in your life. Take the tests in your stride, rally your troops and press on. You’ll find a strength you never knew you had.
In an apparent reference to cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu who had resigned from Rajya Sabha seat, BJP Sunday said the party was bigger than any personality and no one should think otherwise. BJP national vice president and in-charge of Punjab affairs, Prabhat Jha made the remarks on the concluding day of the party’s two-day brainstorming session ahead of the 2017 assembly polls. “There is one person who has resigned and I will not name him. We know he is basically not a politician. Had he been a politician, he would not have resigned,” said Jha. ”There is no need to worry. Party is bigger than any personality. We do not stop anyone, the doors are open. Whosoever wants to serve the country, he is welcome. But if your aspirations have soared to such a level where you
Paris restaurant refuses to serve Muslim women Paris A restaurateur in a Paris suburb who apparently refused to serve two Muslim women sparked anger in France and called for protest, a media report said. A video , widely shared on social media, showed the restaurateur telling the hijab-wearing women: “Terrorists are Muslims and all Muslims are terrorists,” BBC reportedon Sunday. The incident took place at Le Cenacle restaurant in Tremblay-en-France on Saturday. On Sunday, the restaurateur apologised to a group who had gathered outside. According to Le Parisien, the restaurateur said he had “got out of hand” due to the current tensions around the issue of wearing burkinis on French beaches, but also because he had a friend who had died at the Bataclan concert centre attack last November. “We don’t want to be served by racists,” one of the women said. The restaurateur retorted: “Racists don’t kill people.” He also said: “I don’t want people like you at my place. Full stop.”
think that party is small and I am big, it cannot happen,” he added. Sidhu, a former Lok Sabha MP, had resigned from Rajya Sabha seat. He had claimed that he quit Rajya Sabha as the BJP had asked him to stay away from Punjab. Jha asserted that BJP was a cadre-based party and that there had been many examples of leaders in the past who had left the party “but the workers stayed with the
party”. Jha also exhorted party cadre to gear up to bring Akali-BJP combine to power in Punjab for the third time. BJP will contest on 23 seats out of total 117 assembly constituencies in Punjab, in alliance with Prakash Singh Badal’s SAD. “We have a target of winning 23 seats and preparations in this regard are underway. The party will nominate persons who have 100 per cent
chances of winning,” he said. He also asked Punjab BJP President and Union minister Vijay Sampla to give more time to the state in the wake of upcoming assembly polls. Jha exhorted the party cadre to apprise voters of the performance of the Centre by going door-todoor. “Tell them (people) about the benefits of GST. Tell them how Modi government has controlled the inflation with facts and figures,” said Jha.

Respect dress codes in India, UK tells women tourists
London Tourism minister Mahesh Sharma’s remarks advising foreign tourists not to wear skirts may have caused a stir but the Foreign Office tenders similar advice to thousands of British women who travel to India every year. Sharma’s remarks made news in the British media too. However, Britain’s travel advisory for India has specific tips for women’s safety, urging them to “use caution”. It mentions instances of British women being allegedly harassed or sexually assaulted in India. The advisory states: “Reported cases of sexual assault against women and young girls are increasing; recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas and cities show that foreign women are also at risk.” It adds, “British women have been the victims of sexual assault in Goa, Delhi,

Teen jihadi stabs priest during Sunday Mass tried to blow himself up. But the bomb burned without setting off the explosives, so the jihadi pulled an axe from his bag and attacked the priest at St. Yoseph Church in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra in Indonesia. The congregation then stepped in and managed to wrestle the axe from his grasp, detaining him until the police arrived. As officers
AN ISIS suicide bomber today attacked a Catholic priest with an axe as he tried to blow up hundreds
of worshippers at a church during Sunday Mass. Priest Albert Pandiangan, 60, was holding the holy
ceremony at the altar when the 18-year-old fanatic rushed towards the altar with a backpack bomb and
marched the suspect to the car, pictures show his white trousers soaked in blood. Police found his ID card and a picture of the ISIS flag. The young fanatic also told police that he was not working alone. He was later pictured at the police station with an officer holding his bloody head off the ground, where he was lying handcuffed. ‘Somebody tried to kill the

US asks Pakistan not to discriminate among terror groups based on agenda
Washington The United States has stressed on the need for Pakistan to not differentiate between terror groups based on their agenda or affiliation, asking it to ensure there are no safe havens for terrorists in the country.“We have consistently raised our concerns to the highest level of the government of Pakistan on the need to deny safe haven to extremists,” the State Department spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau told reporters on Thursday.
“We have pressed the Government of Pakistan to follow up on their expressed commitment, their stated commitment, to not discriminate among terror groups regardless of their agenda or affiliation,” she said.Trudeau drew the attention to what Pakistan Army chief General Raheel Sharif had said that they would not discriminate. The terrorist attack on the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul is against the best and brightest of Afghanistan and “is a sign that we can
all do more”, she said. “As we have in the past, we encourage the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan to work together, not only in the wake of this attack and to ensure that such attacks don’t happen again, but to increase their cooperation countering violent extremism at large,” Trudeau said.Sixteen people were killed after militants stormed the American University of Afghanistan on Wednesday evening, in a nearly 10-hour raid.
UK broadcaster shuts down for hour, asks viewers to exercise LONDON One of Britain’s leading broadcasters has blacked out its programs for an hour in hopes of spurring viewers to get some exercise.ITV shut down broadcasts on several of its channels Saturday morning as part of its effort to entice UK citizens to sports clubs, which are being opened for free this
weekend as part of a national event called “I Am
Team GB.” Many viewers lauded ITV’s challenge to couch potatoes, describing on social media the activities they’d been
inspired to do. Others, predictably, stuck to their sofas and poked fun at the gesture, describing the blank screens as the best entertainment they’d ever seen on ITV. One viewer said his remote-control thumb had a good workout. ITV is sponsoring the weekend’s sports-promotion activities alongside the National Lottery.

Coca-Cola halts India plant over pollution issue LUCKNOW Coca-Cola has temporarily halted operations at a bottling plant in northern India over alleged environmental violations, an ongoing controversy which has dogged its factories in the country. The beverages giant told AFP it had voluntarily suspended manufacturing at its Dasna plant near New Delhi while the local environmental authority investigates. Activists say the factory in Uttar Pradesh state contaminates groundwater meant for farmers and pollutes the soil, and that sewage is not properly treated. “We received a communication from Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and submitted a detailed response,” Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, which bottles drinks in India for the US giant, said in a statement Thursday. “To show our commitment to compliance with regulatory norms, we decided to temporarily suspend manufacturing at Dasna plant,” it said. Some 54 plants produce fizzy drinks in India for Coca-Cola, which has eyed expansion
in the world’s second-most populous country where income levels are rising. But the Atlanta-based company has met stiff opposition from activists who have waged a more than decade-long battle against it in India over alleged environmental offences. “We conducted an inspection and based on the findings, the UPPCB has withheld the consent to operate this Coca-Cola Plant in Dasna for some valid reasons,” S.R. Sachan, chief environmental officer at the Uttar Pradesh environmental board said, without giving further details. Amit Srivastava, who leads the India Resource Center, an activist group that has targeted Coca-Cola for years, said the company’s action did not go far enough.“This is not really
a victory because of all the pending issues such as the polluted groundwater and soil, as well as the loss of livelihood for the contract workers and farmers in the area,” Srivastava told AFP. “There is a lot more that needs to be done to remediate the problems caused by Coca-Cola in Dasna.” Coca-Cola, which has said it plans to invest $5 billion in India by 2020, has faced a string of objections over the years from local communities over water use.In 2004, it shut one of its plants in southern Kerala state over similar allegations. The company denies any wrongdoing. Last year it dropped plans to open a new bottling plant in southern Tamil Nadu state over protests by locals who also claimed it would rob them of groundwater.

World’s longest airship crash-lands in UK
LONDON The world’s longest aircraft, the Airlander 10 airship, has crashlanded after a test flight in Bedfordshire, central England, its British manufacturer Hybrid Air Vehicles said on Wednesday. The airship, which is bigger than the size of six double-decker buses, sustained damage on landing from its second test flight, Hybrid Air Vehicles said, adding that all crew were safe and well following the incident. Privately owned Hybrid Air Vehicles denied a report on the BBC that the airship had hit a telegraph pole. “No damage was sustained mid-air,” the company said on Twitter. Hybrid Air Vehicles was not immediately reachable by telephone. The 92metre Airlander 10 made its first test flight earlier this month and the company had posted photographs of it up in the air
before Wednesday’s incident. Once the concept is proven, Hybrid Air Vehicles hopes the helium-filled giant will be able to stay airborne for up to two weeks, and that potential customers might want to use it to carry cargo or deliver aid, for surveillance, communications or leisure purposes. It can carry 48 passengers. The Airlander can take off and land vertically meaning it does not need a tarmac runway. It can also operate from open fields, deserts, ice or water.Airships have a long history stretching back to the 19th century, although their popularity dipped in the face of competition from aeroplanes in the 20th century and high-profile accidents such as the Hindenburg disaster in 1937.Hybrid Air Vehicles told Reuters in March that it aimed to be building 12 airships a year by 2018.
Pakistan baits India again, to send Kashmir envoys to 22 nations ISLAMABAD India refused to respond to the fresh round of diplomatic provocation by Pakistan, as Nawaz Sharif named 22 parliamentarians on Saturday as special envoys to highlight its stance on the Kashmir issue in key capitals of the world.“I am standing behind these special envoys to ensure their toil for highlighting the Kashmir cause resonates across the world so that I can shake the collective conscience of the international community during my address at the United Nations this September,” he said.On its part, New Delhi has kept the focus on terrorism and Pakistan’s support for violence in its exchanges with Islamabad and while explaining the situation in J&K to other nations. I have decided to send these parliamentarians for fighting the Kashmir cause in different parts of the world. These special envoys have the strength of the people of Pakistan, prayers from the Kashmiri people across the Line of Control, the mandate of Parliament and support from the government,” the Pakistan PM said in a statement issued by his office. So far Pakistan’s efforts to drum up support for its stance on Kashmir has not struck any significant chord with the internatio nal community . The bilateral atmosphere between India and Pakistan has steadily
Burnt by ex-lover, Chinese woman posts photos online, hailed for courage Beijing A woman doused with fuel and badly burnt by a classmate five years ago in China has posted recent photos on the Twitter-like Weibo platform, generating thousands of comments that hailed her courage and spirt for life.State media called 21-yearold Zhou Yan’s snapshots
Zhou was 16 in 2011 when classmate Tao Rukun walked up to her at her home in eastern Hefei province, poured lighter fluid over her and set her on fire. Zhou had apparently broken off her relationship with Tao days before the attack. She sustained severe burns and was hospitalised for months,
glamour photos; pictures of courage would probably be more appropriate. In the photos, Zhou doesn’t hide her disfigured body or face – all the images show the thick, reddish scars on her face, torso, back, hands and legs years after the assault. But what the photos reveal the most is Zhou’s courage in the face of a tragedy that could have consumed her life.
losing a year in school. The case was closely covered by the media as it emerged that Tao was the son of a local government official – known as a “princeling” – and was rich and influential. Tao was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2012, but Zhou’s compensation of 1.8 million yuan ($270,000) wasn’t paid to her till recently, state media reported.
She underwent several surgeries and intensive cosmetic work over the years, which gradually healed her. The scars, physical and psychological, remain. “I live inside an unfamiliar body. I continue to live as if I were still a 16-year-old, unable to face the 21-year-old me. I am still the same romantic girl expecting an orange-flavoured rain. I often want to cry but can at most sob. Daybreak will soon arrive and everything will be alright,” she wrote in her microblog. As soon as Zhou published her photos online earlier this month, they were circulated and reposted thousands of times by Weibo users who saluted her courage. “Obviously the girl is a true beauty, also with a beautiful, courageous mind,” wrote a Weibo user. “What I saw is not the scar, but the girl’s incredible beauty! Maybe your life could have been totally different, but the past can’t be changed. I believe you could be like a phoenix rising from the ashes,” said another. “The pattern on your back is like the broken wings of an angel. Time will help expand your wings and make them more gorgeous,” was another comment.

Burkina Faso bans big buttocks beauty contest
Ouagadougou The government of Burkina Faso has banned an annual beauty contest for women with the biggest buttocks, saying such events are sexist. Adverts for this weekend’s third edition of ‘Miss Bim-Bim’, carrying an image of two fully clothed women with exaggeratedly large behinds, provoked an outcry on social media. “Our role is to do everything to avoid damaging the image of women,” said Minister Laure Zongo in a statement, adding that social media criticism had persuaded her to act. The male organiser of the event, Hamado Doambahe, said it aimed to promote a more positive body image for African women and encourage fashion designers to use African costumes. Contests like Miss Bim-Bim have been held in other West African countries. Women’s rights groups have mixed views about the tendency
in many African cultures to celebrate women with larger bodies than are typically admired elsewhere. While they welcome the shift away from the unnaturally thin female shapes promoted by the global fashion industry, they deplore the emphasis on men judging women’s body shapes. The head of Burkina Faso’s High Council for Communications, Nathalie Some, called in a statement for people in advertising, the media and the arts to protect the rights of women and girls.

Facebook, Twitter failing on extremist content: UK MPs London Facebook, Twitter and Google are not doing enough to prevent their social networks from being used by extremists for a recruitment drive, a panel of British MPs said Thursday. Failure to act would lead to the
sites becoming “the ‘Wild West’ of the internet,” the Home Affairs Committee warned. The companies defended themselves against claims that they were failing in their duty. The report was published after the number of counter-terrorism arrests in Britain increased 35% between 2010 and 2015, although the country has not seen a mass casualty extremist attack since 2005’s London bombings. An estimated 800 people with links to Britain have travelled to fight in Syria and Iraq.Britain’s official international terrorism threat level is currently set at “severe”, meaning an attack is considered
highly likely.Keith Vaz, a senior MP from the main opposition Labour party who chairs the committee, called the internet “the lifeblood of Daesh and other terrorist groups”.Daesh is another term for Islamic State (IS) jihadists, also known by the
acronyms of ISIS and ISIL.“Huge corporations like Google, Facebook and Twitter with their billion-dollar incomes are consciously failing to target this threat and passing the buck by hiding behind their supranational legal status, despite knowing that their sites are being used by the instigators of terror,” Vaz said. The committee added: “These companies have teams of only a few hundred employees to monitor networks of billions of accounts and Twitter does not even proactively report extremist content to law enforcement agencies.“If they continue to fail to tackle this issue and allow

World’s biggest pearl found in Philippines
MANILA Philippine officials believe they may have recovered biggest natural giant clam pearl in the world - weighing a whopping 34kg (5.2 stone). The pearl was found 10 years ago by a fisherman who was unaware of its value and kept it as a good luck charm, Palawan official Aileen Amurao said. “We were
amazed when he brought it to us,” she told local media. Officials are awaiting confirmation from gemologists that the find is indeed the world’s largest pearl. The pearl is 61cm (2ft) wide and 30cm long and, if confirmed, will easily beat the current record holder, the Pearl of Lao Tzu, which weighs 6.4kg.
their platforms to become the ‘Wild West’ of the internet, it will erode their reputations.”A spokesperson for YouTube, which is owned by Google, said it would keep working with Britain’s government to see what more can be done.“We remove content that incites violence, terminate accounts run by terrorist organisations and respond to legal requests to remove content that breaks UK law,” the spokesperson added. Simon Milner of Facebook UK, said: “Terrorists and the support of terrorist activity are not allowed on Facebook and we deal swiftly and robustly with reports of terrorism-related content.”Twitter said last week that it had cut off 235,000 accounts in the last six months, raising the overall figure it had suspended to 360,000 since mid-2015.Vaz called for top talent from the video games industry to be recruited to help “counter-terrorist propaganda”. The committee also described as “lamentable” the amount of support available to the families of those who travel to fight in Syria and Iraq.It called for the government’s controversial Prevent strategy, which aims to address the root causes of extremism in Britain, to be renamed Engage “to remove its already ‘toxic’ associations in the Muslim community”.
World’s first driverless taxi hits Singapore streets
SINGAPORE The first driverless taxi began work on Thursday in a limited public trial on the streets of Singapore. Developer nuTonomy invited a select group of people to download their app and ride for free in its “robo-taxi” in a western Singapore hi-tech business district, hoping to get feedback ahead of a planned dull launch of the service in 2018. “This is really a moment in history that’s going to change how cities are built, how we really look at our surroundings,” nuTonomy executive Doug Parker told Reuters. The trial rides took place in a Mitsubishi i-MiEv electric vehicle, with an engineer sitting behind the steering wheel to monitor the system and take control if necessary. The trial is on an on-going basis, nuTonomy
said, and follows private testing that began in April. Parker, whose company has partnered with the Singapore government on the project, said he hoped to have 100 taxis working commercially in the Southeast Asian citystate by 2018. Nutonomy is one of several companies racing to launch self-driving vehicles, with automakers and technology firms striking new alliances. Swedish automaker Volvo AB said last week it had agreed to a $300 million alliance with ridehailing service Uber to develop a driverless vehicle. Israeli driving assistant software maker Mobileye NV said its vehicle, developed with Delphi Automotive Plc, would be ready for production by 2019, while Ford Motor Co said its self-driving car was slated for 2021.
French court suspends burkini ban after outrage, but resorts defiant Paris France’s highest administrative court on Friday suspended a controversial ban on the burkini by a French Riviera town, although other resorts remained defiant, vowing to keep the restrictions in place. In a judgement expected to lead to bans being overturned in around 30 towns along the French coast, the state council ruled the measure was a “serious and clearly illegal violation of fundamental freedoms”. The case was brought by two rights groups seeking to overturn the ban, which has triggered a fierce debate in France and sparked critical headlines around the world. The suspension of the ban on the Islamic swimsuit, which covers from the head to the heels, was welcomed by the United Nations.

But the ruling, which only applied to the ban imposed by Villeneuve-Loubet, was quickly dismissed by several other towns, including Nice, which vowed to keep the restrictions in place and continue imposing fines on women who wear the fullbody swimsuit. In its decision, the court said local authorities could only introduce measures restricting individual freedoms if wearing the swimsuit on beaches represented a “proven risk” to public order. The judges said there was no such risk in the case before the court concerning Villeneuve-
Loubet, a resort between Nice and Cannes. The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) hailed the ruling as a “victory for common sense”. And UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said “we welcome the decision by the court,” noting that the world body stresses “the need for people’s dignity to be respected.” Police action to fine Muslim women for wearing burkinis on beaches in several towns, including in the tourist resorts of Nice and Cannes, has triggered a fierce debate about women’s rights and the French state’s strictly-guarded secularism.

In Egypt, ecstatic pilgrims start journey to Makkah CAIRO Pilgrims have been saying their farewells at Cairo airport before leaving for Saudi Arabia to perform the hajj in the tradition, they believe, of the Prophet
Mohammed and Abraham before him.Every year tens of thousands of Egyptians apply for visas to travel to Mecca to join more than a million Muslims from across the world at the pilgrimage. “When I was chosen, I couldn’t believe it,” says Afaf Hasan Rifai, who was selected by Egypt’s authorities to perform the hajj to start early next month. “I started crying and I prostrated to God,” she says, her beaming husband standing next to her outside the terminal late on Thursday. Nearby a policeman pushes a wheelchair carrying an elderly women with a cane into the terminal.Every Muslim who can undertake the journey is expected to perform the pilgrimage at least once in his or her lifetime, but it can also be performed on behalf of another follower of the faith who is unable to do so.Muslims have travelled to Mecca for the hajj
since the 7th Century, when God is believed to have ordained it in the Koran. Last year an estimated 2,300 pilgrims - among them 464 Iranians and 182 Egyptians - died
in a stampede at the hajj, according to tallies from foreign officials. It was the deadliest stampede in hajj history, and fuelled historic tensions between conservative Sunni Saudi Arabia and its regional rival Shiite Iran. Saudi authorities have announced new security measures for the hajj this year, including electronic bracelets and a reduced period for the stoning ritual during which the deaths took place. Over the centuries, the ritual - seen as an elusive moment of Muslim unity gathering all nationalities and classes - has not been spared the vicissitudes of the region. There was the time when the Qaramatians, a sanguinary sect which controlled present-day Bahrain in the 10th century, descended on Mecca to put an end to what they viewed as superstition.
‘Bagpipe lung’ death prompts warning for wind musicians
LONDON Musicians were warned Tuesday to clean their wind instruments regularly after British doctors reported that “bagpipe lung” had killed a man who inhaled fungi growing inside his pipes. An article in the medical journal Thorax recorded the case of a 61-year-old man who played the bagpipes daily but had struggled with a dry cough and breathlessness for seven years. His condition improved rapidly when he went on a three-month trip to Australia, leaving his bagpipes at home. This prompted doctors treating him to
take samples from inside the pipes. These revealed a host of different fungi growing in the moist bag, neck and mouthpiece area of the instrument, which the man had been inhaling when he played.Despite treatment, the man died in October 2014 and a post-mortem examination showed he had suffered extensive lung damage. This is thought to be the first reported case of a bagpipe player being exposed to fungi which may have triggered hypersensitivity pneumonitis, the inflammatory lung disease which the man suffered from.
They slaughtered thousands of pilgrims and made off with the sacred Black Stone of the Kaaba, ransoming it to the Abbasid Caliphate after having broken it in several pieces. In 1979, apocalyptic jihadists took over the Grand Mosque in Mecca and held pilgrims hostage, before special forces eventually flushed them out. Many pilgrims, especially the elderly, have died amid the massive crowds while performing the rites. But many Muslims still dream of going - even those who have already made repeated pilgrimages, such as 93-year-old Salem Ibrahim Rahmo. “I’m happy as can be,” said the white-turbaned Rahmo as he waits outside Cairo airport terminal.“To visit the Prophet (tomb and mosque in Medina), this is the greatest happiness. And to visit the Kaaba. This is my third time,” he says. His son, Rahmo Mohamed Ibrahim, believes “everyone” would seize the chance to perform the hajj if allowed.“Every person wishes to visit the houses of God and to perform the pilgrimage and fulfil his obligation,” says Ibrahim, 53. The rituals, believed to date to the time of Abraham - who Muslims believe built the original Kaaba as the first house of worship - will begin on September 9 and last for six days.Men will wear seamless white clothes, and women modest Islamic garb, and circumambulate the Kaaba seven times.
Punjabis will accept Kejriwal, but CM face will be from state: Mann
Chandigarh As the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faces a deepening controversy over ouster of its state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur over a ‘cash sting’, its Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann has claimed that Delhi CM and party chief Arvind Kejriwal will be acceptable to the people of Punjab but the CM face will be from the state. In a programme Press Conference aired on ABP News on Saturday, reacting to a question on whether the party was not declaring its CM face since an ‘outsider’ Kejriwal will not be acceptable to the people of Punjab, Mann sounded cautiously optimistic over Punjabis accepting Kejriwal as chief minister if the rookie party is voted to power in the assembly elections due early next year. “Kejriwal will be acceptable to Punjab’s people but he had made it clear that he will serve Delhi for five years. The CM face of the party will be from Punjab,” he said. On speculations that he was eyeing the post himself, the comedian-turned-politician said he was the chairman of the campaign committee of the party and was not a contender for the post of state convener or in race
for the CM face. But when asked if he considered himself competent to become Punjab CM, Mann avoided a direct reply, saying, “I am a mass leader who lives in the hearts of people. I speak in their language and will accept whatever responsibility my party gives to me. I have told Kejriwal that I am ready to even paste posters on walls or wave the broom from a Ludhiana bridge.”On Chhotepur alleging that Delhi leaders were running the show and discrediting state leaders like him, Mann said even the Congress has leaders from Delhi for organisational matters. “Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh reports to Sonia Gandhi. Is Sonia from Bathinda? Is Harish Chaudhary (Congress secretary) from Bhucho Mandi? The Delhi leaders will go to other state once we win in Punjab. They will not even contest the panchayat elections here,” he said.On suspended AAP MP Harinder Khalsa complaining to the Lok Sabha speaker that “he cannot sit next to Mann owing to smell of alcohol”, Mann said Khalsa was hand-in-glove with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and together they want to decimate AAP’s ‘Mission Punjab’.

There have been several controversial defamation prosecutions carried out during Suu Kyi’s first few months in power, including a six-month sentence handed to man who wrote a poem about having a tattoo of the former ex-army president on his penis. A film about conflict between the military and ethnic Shan groups in the mid-20th century was also pulled from a human rights film festival in June. The order was issued by the Ministry of Information’s 15member film review committee, which said it feared the movie would undermine “national reconciliation” efforts.
Myanmar actor jailed for cursing army with graffiti
YANGON A Myanmar actor was sentenced to nearly three years in prison for scribbling curse-laden insults about the powerful army on his car, a police officer said Saturday.Tun Lin Thein, a 35year-old who appears in Myanmar music videos, slammed the military as an “army of dogs” and spray-painted a number of other expletives across his silver Nissan in March. He was arrested shortly after and convicted of defamation by a Yangon court on Friday. “The court sentenced him for two years and nine months,” police officer Thein Han, whose team handled the actor’s arrest, told AFP.Freedoms have flourished in Myanmar since the military junta stepped down in 2011, paving the way for November elections that swept democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi into power. But limits on expression remain, with criticism of the army especially taboo.Police said the actor was also charged with defaming the national flag and a Buddhist flag, which he taped to his car alongside the graffiti. “His
army) but also to our religion and national flag. That is why he had to receive this sentence,” Thein Han said. He added that the act appeared to be motivated by a personal grievance, saying officers believed the insults were levelled at the military family of the actor’s ex-wife. Hopes are high that Suu Kyi’s new civilian government will accelerate the stunning democratic transition that has gripped Myanmar since the end of junta rule. But she still has to contend with an influential army that has retained control over key government ministries and a quarter of parliament seats.

Kim Dotcom wants to livestream Italian pilot dies while broadcasting Megaupload legal fight vs US on YouTube his daring jump on Facebook Live
Wellington Internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom wants to livestream his legal battle against the United States on YouTube. Dotcom’s lawyers have asked if they can film his extradition appeal, which began Monday at New Zealand’s high court in Auckland. The US opposes the plan. Justice Murray Gilbert, the New Zealand judge hearing the appeal, criticized Dotcom’s request for coming at the lastminute but said he’d let other media discuss it before making a decision, the National Business Review newspaper reported. A New Zealand judge last year ruled that Dotcom and three of his colleagues could be extradited to the US to face
conspiracy, racketeering and money-laundering charges. If found guilty, they could face decades in jail. The ruling came nearly four years after the US shut down Dotcom’s file-sharing site Megaupload, which prosecutors say was widely used by people to illegally download songs, television shows and movies. Megaupload was once one of the internet’s most popular sites. Prosecutors say it raked in at least $175 million and cost copyright holders more than $500 million. But Dotcom and his colleagues argue they can’t be held responsible for people who chose to use the site for illegal purposes. In his application to live-stream the case, Dotcom’s lawyer Ron
What is UBER doing?
My name is Anil Kumar, and I am working as a Uber driver partner (Full time independent contractor) from almost 3 months. As per my schedule on Aug. 18, 2016, at 7a.m, while I was using the Uber app, I got notified that I was unable to drive. I got email from Uber RE: Vehicle Registration document Expiring in 14 Days, in which they said, updated documents will be required, or we will need to put your Uber partner account temporarily on hold. Then I emailed Uber, I will update the document as soon as possible. I was shocked to see that Uber suddenly put my account on hold without any prior notifications. According to the Uber email Re: Expiration of Vehicle registration, I contacted the ministry for vehicle registration, and they told me that my vehicle registration will expire on next year Aug. 2017. As per the email sent by Uber, I contacted their Mississauga location but they were unable to understand why I was referred to them. Later, I was told by their associate to complete the quality
improvement course which would enable me to continue driving for Uber. I got another email from Uber and they stated “They apologize for the confusion but our local support representatives wanted to go over some rider feedback and service techniques with you.” Finally when I refused to complete the course, I received another email from Uber shortly and according to them: “As a result, we regret to inform you we will be ending our partnership with you effective immediately” What is UBER doing with their drivers? To my understanding, Uber is working in favor of the riders only. This is rider’s oriented company. Uber has no value or respect for drivers & is playing with them. Using the excuse of low rating, Uber is performing a different business under the name of a Quality improvement course. If Uber continues to treat drivers wrongfully, then Uber will have no drivers working for them in the future. Anil Kumar 647.853.5800 anil.dheer@yahoo.com
Mansfield said the streaming would have a 10-minute delay to ensure sensitive information could be censored, the NBR newspaper reported. Mansfield also argued livestreaming would ensure balanced and fast reporting, as opposed to the constraints of traditional media. Dotcom and colleagues Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk and Finn Batato are seeking to halt their extradition. They say lower court judge Nevin Dawson didn’t give their arguments a fair hearing. Grant Illingworth, the lawyer for Ortmann and van der Kolk, told the high court Monday the case “has gone off the rails,” NBR reported. Born in Germany as Kim Schmitz, Dotcom has long enjoyed a flamboyant lifestyle. He was arrested in New Zealand in 2012 after a dramatic police raid on his mansion. Out on bail soon after, he released a music album, started another Internet file-sharing company called Mega, and launched a political party which unsuccessfully contested the nation’s 2014 election. More recently, Dotcom has promised to launch a reboot of Megaupload next year.
London A 28-year-old Italian wingsuit pilot died in the Alps while broadcasting his daring jump Facebook Live. The incident took place near Kandersteg in Switzerland where the deceased, identified as Armin Schmieder, told his fans ‘today you fly with me’ before jumping off from the cliff, the Daily Mail reported on Sunday. Images from the video which was posted online showed the pilot getting ready with his wingsuit before pocketing his phone and taking off. According to the video available, some moments later a shout was heard by online watchers. Followers watching the video immediately reacted with horror
on Facebook. It is presumed he plunged to the ground but police did not immediately make any comment about the incident. It is the latest tragedy to hit the sport and comes just days after Alexander Polli, a well-known and daring wingsuit pilots, died after crashing into a tree during a flight. Polli became popular after posting a video of himself flying through a small hole in a huge rock called the ‘Roca Forad’ in Montserrat, Spain. Earlier this month, a British Base jumper plunged to his death after jumping from the ‘High Ultimate’ peak near the Alpine village of Murren in central Switzerland.
‘China’s Jack the Ripper’ accused of brutally killing 11 women arrested Beijing Police believe they have captured a serial killer dubbed China’s “Jack the Ripper” for the way he mutilated several of his 11 female victims, state-run media reported Monday, nearly three decades after the first murder. Gao Chengyong, 52, was detained at the grocery store he runs with his wife in Baiyin, in the northwest province of Gansu, the China Daily said. The newspaper said he had confessed to 11 murders in Gansu and the neighbouring region of Inner Mongolia between 1988 and 2002, citing the ministry of public security. Gao allegedly targeted young women wearing red and followed them home to rape and kill them, often cutting their throat and mutilating their bodies, according to reports. The youngest victim was eight years old. Some victims also had their reproductive organs removed, the Beijing Youth Daily added. “The suspect has a sexual perversion and hates women,” police said in 2004, when they linked the crimes for the first time and offered a reward of 200,000 yuan ($30,000) for information leading to an arrest. “He’s reclusive and unsociable,
but patient,” they said at the time. The original Jack the Ripper was a serial killer active in east London in the late Victorian era, who is widely believed to have murdered five women, mutilating several of them. T1hose killings have never been solved. Gao was identified after a relative was put under house arrest in Baiyin over allegations of a minor crime and had his DNA collected and tested, the China Daily said. Police concluded the killer they had been hunting for 28 years was a relation, and Gao’s DNA matched the murderer’s, it added. There were no
immediate explanations as to why the killings stopped in 2002. Miscarriages of justice are not rare in China, where the use of force to extract confessions remains widespread. In several high-profile cases in recent years, China has exonerated wrongfully executed or jailed convicts after others came forward to confess their crimes, or in some cases because the supposed murder victim was later found alive. None of Monday’s reports said whether anyone had previously been convicted in connection with Gao’s alleged crimes.

Parents take to Twitter to help free son jailed in Pakistan under espionage charge NEW DELHI It was a busy Sunday for Fauzia Ansari and her husband Nehal, whose son Hamid who had vanished few years ago was traced to a Pakistan jail recently. Neither of them is Twitter savy but they were busy tweeting and asking people to retweet with the hashtag #helphamid to bring authorities’ attention to their plight. HELP FROM BHOPAL Sayed Abid Hussain, a 32-yearold from Bhopal is the vanguard who is helping create a Twitter trend to help the Ansaris. The most interesting part of this Twitter story is that Abid has never met the Ansaris. He had only heard about them and decided to help them on humanitarian ground. Abid is an interior designer by profession and has already run Twitter campaigns like #helpramzan for Mohammad Ramzan, a 15-yearold Pakistani boy who ended up in India after migrating to Bangladesh. In the last 15 days he and his team of 20 people started contacting those who they
thought would be interested in tweeting about this issue and all this was done without any monetary benefits. A hashtag #helphamid was decided and all those interested
were asked to be ready to tweet between 2.40 pm and 4 pm today. With the number of hashtag campaigns he has run Abid was sure that with 2,000 tweets during this time the hashtag would start trending and thus would attract attention, “We need to keep reminding authorities that they need to look into the issue so tweeting and making it trend reminds them about it” said Abid. WILL TRY AGAIN The team set a target of tweeting atleast 300 tweets in the first five minutes and for this one liners
and content were prepared in advance. Abid says, “Tweets from cities especially metros have weightage and and not everyone can start trends. One should follow more than 1,000 people and should have more than 5,000 followers. So there is a lot that goes into making a hashtag trend.” The team achieved 200 tweets in the first few minutes and soon had tweets around 1,600 with the hashtag tagging well known personalities and authorities from both India and Pakistan. It resulted in Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj liking tweets by Fauzia Ansari. However the team is not satisfied with this and will be ready with more content next weekend to trend the hashtag. Fauzia Ansari herself who had never tweeted much ever said, “I don’t understand all this but I can do anything to get my son back. I just want him back. He is suffering for a small mistake.” Ansaris got to know that their son has been sentenced to three years of jail for espionage by Pakistan court as he did not have
Union minister Mahesh Sharma asks foreign tourists in India not to wear skirts
Agra Union tourism and culture minister Mahesh Sharma stirred a controversy on Sunday while suggesting that visiting woman tourists should not wear skirts in India. Interacting with mediapersons, Sharma elaborated on helpline number 1363 introduced to help foreign tourists. He said, “When a foreign tourist reaches the airport, he or she is given a welcome kit wherein dos and don’ts are mentioned for them
during their stay in India”. “These dos and don’ts include suggestions that if they are in small cities, they should not roam alone at night nor wear dresses like skirts,” he said. “We also suggest them to click photographs of number plate of cabs they are travelling in and send it to their friends so that the number is stored and circulated,” said Sharma. A case has been registered in this regard. “We are investigating the case. We will probe it from every angle,” he added. The body was taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College for autopsy. Vadodara Wives of three Indian fishermen, whose spouses are languishing in Pakistani jails, have requested visa under humanitarian grounds to visit their husbands. The women have written to PM Narendra Modi requesting him to discuss the issue with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. They have alleged in the letter that their husbands’ health is deteriorating as Pakistani authorities are not providing proper medical care. In last three years, around four fishermen have died in Pakistani jails due to alleged negligence by authorities. Gangaben, wife of Bhagvanbhai Solanki, has said in the letter that her husband is severely ill for more than a year now, a fact she learnt from fishermen who were released recently.

cattle are a major traffic menace in India, with hundreds of bovines roaming freely on roads across the country. “Many drivers injured themselves or killed the cattle after running over them at night,” Kailash Chauhan, traffic police inspector for Balaghat district told AFP. “There was an urgent need to prevent such accidents,” he said. Because of the success of the scheme, officers say they now plan to buy permanent radium paint to cover cows’ horns, as the plastic bands only last for a few weeks. Authorities have also asked farmers to fix glowin-the-dark bands on their own cattle to help them be seen more easily. In 2015 more than 550 people were killed in India in accidents involving stray animals, according to road ministry figures.A World Health Organisation report in 2013 said more than 231,000 people die on India’s deadly roads each year.

songs with the girl midair and fly about while bashing the villains. Hey, wasn’t Tiger doing all of that in his ‘human’ roles so far anyway? Wait, there is a catch. Where A Flying Jatt departs from regular masala is that the film tries to give the superhero a goofy twist and no, we are
not talking about the fact that the hero gets to fly about unlike other aam aadmi stars. Remo D’Souza’s latest sets out imagining the superhero who will save the world as a misfit, a butt of jokes. A Flying Jatt is somewhat redeemed by that departure, considering the
film is just a mediocre cross between a Jackie Chan action film, wannabe superhero fare and regular Bollywood masala (package includes a loud hyper-jazbaadi Ma for the hero and a villain named Raka) that manages to impress as none of the above. For Tiger as well as
the film’s makers, though, the ambition was never to push the envelope in entertainment. A Flying Jatt sets out to create a possible franchise niche for one of Bollywood’s hottest Gen- Now actors of the moment, with smart marketing put to effect. To that extent the makers seem to have a foolproof plan, creativity be damned. Irrespective of this film’s fate, producer Ekta Kapoor and director Remo could look at future sequels subject to Tiger’s longevity as a star, of course. The first half is actually funny, though silly, while setting Tiger as Aman the exceptional Jatt. He is a martial arts teacher but hardly holds much command among students, is too tongue-tied to express his love for the pretty science teacher (Jacqueline Fernandez). He fumbles and mumbles, habitually landing in a spot, and is very much the mama’s boy. Trouble starts when the film decides to take itself seriously, and goes for a jaded action turn to justify Tiger’s superhero act. Aman’s mama (Amrita Singh) confronts rich bad
tycoon Mr Malhotra (Kay Kay Menon) for trying to wrest a plot with a holy tree. Malhotra has also been dumping toxic industrial waste into a local lake. He sends the monstrous Raka (Nathan Jones) to finish off Aman and his folks. Time for the thunder claps and lightning bolts with loud music as superhero discovers his superpower to save the world. A Flying Jatt cannot seem to decide whether it wants to be a mass entertainer or reach out to the more sophisticated multiplex audiences. The film does nothing new in terms of entertaining. Tacky CGI effects and tired action scenes do not help retain audience interest. Tiger Shroff does what he is best at defying gravity as he dances and fights. Jacqueline does what she is best at, too preen and grin sweetly into the camera. Nathan Jones lets loose a whole range of growls and scowls by way of acting. Kay Kay Menon moves around with a set, undefinable expression. It looked like embarrassment, but I could be wrong.
Out on DVD X-Men: Apocalypse
Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn Direction: Bryan Singer Stars: 3/5 THE latest film in the X-Men series tries rendering a subtext to the CGIridden adventure saga using the old order’s disillusionment as its thematic context. In a world changing rapidly, rigid old values tend to come apart and violence is often the natural outcome. The plot is woven around an ancient mutant force named Apocalypse, who wakes up after centuries and is not pleased with what he finds. So, he decides to take over the world and bring it back to track. The X-Men have to thwart Apocalypse before he destroys all. Oscar Isaac is cast as Apocalypse, and much of the film’s excitement lies about the prehistoric beast he plays out. Director Bryan Singer tries talking of old values that tend to get a violent interpretation when rot sets in.
Nil Battey Sannata Cast: Swara Bhaskar, Ratna Pathak, Pankaj Tripathi, Ria, Sanjay Suri Direction: Ashwini Iyer Tiwari Stars: 3/5 DEBUTANT director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari’s film is realistic and relevant in the content it delivers, at the same time maintaining the hallmark Bollywood tone of melodrama in an understated
way. Swara Bhaskar is Chanda, a domestic help and single mother who struggles to give decent education to daughter Apeksha (Ria), who is a weak student and not interested in studies. To goad Apeksha into doing well, Chanda does something unusual. She enrols in Apeksha’s school, to instil a sense of competition that might make the girl to perform better. — Vinayak Chakravorty

I WENT THROUGH RAGGING IN COLLEGE : SONAKSHI Sonakshi Sinha’s next film Akira touches upon the subject of ragging among other subjects plaguing woman. Sonakshi says she had faced ragging herself during her college days. “Ragging is touched upon greatly in the film (‘Akira‘). I feel that I did go through it in SNDT (Shreemati N a t h i b a i Damodar Thackersey Women’s University), which is an all-girls’ college but it was a way of making friends with each other,” Sonakshi said at a media interaction. “Till today, people who ragged me or I ragged my
I'D LIKE A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS TO RESCUE ME : TIGER Tiger Shroff is all set to be BTown's latest superhero, is hoping to have a hat-trick of hits with A Flying Jatt after Heropanti and Baaghi. Tiger is quite excited to be the latest desi superhero, and as a hero is expected to rescue damsels in distressquestion remains, will Tiger be doing the same. To this he replies "I'd like a damsel in distress to rescue me. I don't know why we believe that girls are always damsels in distress, I believe we are equals,” He also admits he'd like to keep the costume as a memento. "But since Part 2 is already in the works, I won't be able to keep it," he laments. He also admits that he was intimidated by co-star Nathan Jones "Fighting Nathan Jones was scary, my heart would beat really fast as I pushed myself harder to take on this superb athlete,".

That’s something which needs to be taken care of.” Akira is the story of a young girl from Jodhpur who comes to Mumbai for further education where she gets into a spat with the bullies of the college she joins. This movie also stars Anurag Kashyap and Konkona Sen Sharma. Kashyap plays the antagonist and Sinha says he has done a wonderful job. “Anurag has been fantastic antagonist to my protagonist. He is very good in the film. It was so nice that he was working as an actor and did not try to be a director in any way. He let A.R. Murugadoss do his film and he did a fabulous job. I told him he should take up more acting,” Sonakshi said.

His acting skills have drawn praises from both viewers and critics alike. Boman confessed that the number of his movies have dwindled as he is on a break. Boman said, "I have taken a short break and want to spend some good time with my grandson Ziaan." When asked about
his rapport with SRK, Boman said that he enjoys spending time with the actor. "I have had the most fun with Shah Rukh Khan. We have done so many movies together, hosted shows and done world tours

Katrina reveals how being famous helped keep her mind off Ranbir post split
After Ranbir Kapoor recently opened up about his much talked-about breakup with longtime girlfriend Katrina Kaif, quizzing the latter on the same is nothing unexpected. In an interview with Rajeev Masand, when the 33year-old actress was asked how hard was it to be a professional when her personal life was in turmoil, she said, “Being an actor is quite a luxurious job, we have staff and we are treated
specially. But if I worked in say, an office or if I had a normal job, you are still going to go to work. You are still going to be required to do your job, but you are still feeling it in your heart, right?” Ranbir, Katrina’s split came during the shoot of Baar Baar Dekho, but she did not allow herself to get affected by this emotional crisis. “You know, in some way all the attention is a good thing. It forces you to step up. It forces you not to
indulge in self pity and feeling sorry for yourself. It forces you to get yourself together and stand up quicker because you want to show your best face to the world,” continued the actress. “You can have your moments where you cannot be any lower and things cannot be tougher, but I take it as a challenge, and that’s what you have to do,” she added. Sometimes back, Ranbir, in an interview with the same journalist, opening up about the break-up, said, “Whatever I say on any platform is grossly misconstrued. Over the years, I have realised that my personal life is very dear to me especially what my relationship with Katrina is, or was or what it’s going to be. I think after my parents, she’s been the most influential and motivational entity in my life. I don’t want to speak about it. There is no
negativity, no sense of bitterness, so there’s nothing to talk about.” “You don’t need to know if I’m affected or not. My relationship was really punctured by a lot of things; baseless rumours, reports, perceptions. I don’t want to clarify. There’s no awkwardness, as a matter of fact it’s amazing. We’re actors. We aren’t here to bring our personal life and emotions. We come on sets, we bring our characters; emotions. She brings her game on the set and in return I bring my A-game,” he added. On a related note, the Fitoor actress and the Barfi actor will be seen together in Anurag Basu’s upcoming movie Jagga Jasoos. Presently, Katrina is busy promoting her upcoming movie Baar Baar Dekho with Sidharth Malhotra, slated to hit the theatres on September 9.
I am still too new for Hollywood: Parineeti Chopra Actor Priyanka Chopra is playing the lead in American show Quantico as well as a baddie in the film Baywatch, but actor Parineeti Chopra wants to wait to take up projects overseas. She wants to concentrate on her Bollywood films for now. “I am still too new, with only six films. I want to make a mark in India, get the love of all the fans in this country and Indians all over the world and only then I should venture out. But of course, if something good comes before that, then why not. I will be mad to say no. But for that it has to be something really great,” says Parineeti.

Tom Cruise lugs his private gym on a private jet wherever he goes
Actor Tom Cruise reportedly charters private jets to take his gym kit wherever he travels. The 54-year-old ensures he stays in shape while shooting movies, and so he uses private planes to fly his fitness gear to his next destination a day before he arrives, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “Working out is really important to Tom and he likes to have his own
equipment with him so he can exercise in private,” The Sun newspaper quoted a source as saying. “It might seem extravagant but for an A-lister of his stature, hiring a private jet is like the rest of us hailing a taxi,” the source added. Meanwhile, Cruise’s friend singerturned-designer Victoria Beckham
had earlier shared how she called on the actor to help motivate her own staff. The 42-year-old was once working hard on a new collection when Cruise, who famously played aviator Lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in iconic 1986 movie Top Gun, paid a visit to her office and spent quality time with all of her employees. “So I was working on a collection and all the mood boards were up and my team is in the room with me... all of a sudden there was a knock on the door and Tom walks in, all in black with a pair of aviators, and he stands legs apart and his hands on his hips,” Beckham said. “He basically came as Maverick. He spent such a long time with every single person, whether it was the design team, e-com, marketing and he spoke to all of the seamstresses,” she added.
Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender want to keep romance private
Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, who fell in love while shooting for their upcoming movie The Light Between Oceans, say it was easy for them to unite but they want to keep their romance private. The elusive Hollywood
couple rarely talks about their two-year romance. The actors, who are playing husband and wife in the period drama, opened up about their film in an interview with the Entertainment Weekly. Oscar-winning Vikander said, “I think we’ve made
a clear statement that we keep certain things just between us. It was very easy to unite, but that’s quite personal.” Fassbender, 39, and Vikander, 27, first met while filming the Derek Cianfrance-directed movie in 2014. They made their awardsshow debut as a couple at the Golden Globes in January. Fassbender said he does not feel any obligation to talk about his love life. “I’m not going to talk about my private life with a total stranger, unless I feel like I need to. Why would I? I don’t.”
Actors Rose Leslie and Kit Harington rely on video calling app FaceTime to keep the romance alive in their long-distance relationship. The couple has been romantically linked since 2012 after meeting on the set of hit fantasy series
Game of Thrones. The stars only went public with their relationship in April, 2015, but have been open about their affection for one another ever since. “It’s kind of an embarrassment of riches whereby both of us are working. It’s a wonderful

LEATHER FOR SKIN SOMETIMES it is not what you show, but rather what you don’t that makes for a tantalizing photograph. Despite Calvin Klein being famous for getting the world’s hottest stars to strip down to their smalls, its latest advert sees a fully-dressed Bella Hadid look just as sexy albeit with more clothes on. The 19-year-old shared the new sizzling campaign image on Tuesday evening. In the black and white snap, Bella wears a pair of skin tight leather pants with an oversized leather jacket falling off her shoulders. Making the look go from hot to smoking, the catwalk star wears the ensemble with a cropped T-shirt with the label’s classic logo on front. Posing so that she is leaning back slightly, the model shows off her flat as a board stomach and stops short of flashing some underboob from the cropped top. Previously, the model has starred in averts for the brand in her underwear as well as posing topless but with he hands across her chest in the label’s jeans. The stylish star captioned the snap: “New Calvin Klein by Tyrone Lebon & Max Pearmain!! Crazy fun shoot Thank you.”
Rose Leslie reveals how she keeps romance with Kit Harington alive thing to be involved and to be busy, but yes, I suppose we make it work, FaceTime is a must,” Rose said, admitting the frequent calls often leave her with a costly phone bill at the end of each month. Besides starring in Game of Thrones as Ygritte, Rose also found fame playing Gwen Dawson in Downton Abbey. The show went on to become one of the most successful Victorian-era dramas ever, but Rose says she had no idea just how popular it would become. “At that time I was very excited just because it

Baby with missing skull sees 2nd b’day A miracle baby who born with most of his skull missing has celebrated his second birthday. Jaxon Buell was not expected to survive after a serious brain malformation called anencephaly was spotted
during an ultrasound, with doctors even advising his mother to have an abortion because he would likely die during the pregnancy. But Brandon and Brittany Buell refused to give up, and on Saturday they celebrated an incredible day with their incredible boy. ‘Two years ago today, Jaxon Emmett Buell was born and our lives c h a n g e d forever,’ the parents wrote on Facebook. ‘Although many gave up on him too soon and others told us
we would not see this day, today we are celebrating Jaxon’s 2nd birthday! ‘Thank you to everyone who has followed Jaxon’s progress and story along this journey. We continue to hope and pray for many more milestones for Jaxon in the future. And, today, we celebrate!’ ‘He still has his struggles where he throws up, he still has several seizures several times a day, he’s still on the smaller side at 13 pounds but he’s certainly developing,’ the 31-year-old told Metro. Brandon heaped praise on his wife Brittany,
saying their little miracle boy wouldn’t be surviving without her. ‘She’s been amazing. She has so much love and patience in working with him on a daily basis,’ he told the newspaper. ‘That’s truly one of the reasons why he is the way that he is because of the one on one interaction that she gives him as his mother. It’s made such a
big difference in his life. ‘I don’t know if he would still be with us and certainly he would not be doing the things that he’s doing without her loving and nurturing as his mother.’ Anencephaly is a neural tube birth defect in which a child is born without parts of the brain and skull.
About 1 in 4,859 babies in the U.S. will be born with Anencephaly each year and usually die shortly after birth, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Indian-origin teen devises treatment Heroic US mom drowns while holding son for most deadly form of breast cancer above water for rescue
London A 16-year-old Indian-origin boy in the UK has claimed to have found a treatment for the most deadly form of breast cancer which is unresponsive to drugs. Krtin Nithiyanandam, who moved to the UK from India with his parents, hopes he has found a way to turn so-called triple negative breast cancer into a kind which responds to drugs. Many breast cancers are driven by oestrogen, progesterone or growth chemicals so drugs that can block those fuels, such as tamoxifen, make effective treatments. However, triple negative breast cancer does not have receptors and it can only be treated with a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy which lowers
‘Mouse’ grounds Air France plane; delays flight for two days
Paris A small rodent, probably a mouse, caused the grounding of an Air France flight from Bamako to Paris, the firm said on Sunday. It took several hours to remove the unwanted passenger from the flight bound for the French capital in the early hours of Saturday. By the time the stowaway had been expelled, the cabin crew had reached the maximum time they are permitted to work to avoid fatigue, airline spokesman Christophe Paumier told AFP. The flight was delayed by 48 hours and is expected to operate later Sunday. Mice and other rodents are a significant danger to aircraft as they have a tendency to nibble through vital cabling. “Air France regrets the inconvenience caused by this significant delay and recalls that the safety of its passengers and its crew is its top priority,” the airline said in a statement.
the chance of survival. “I’ve been basically trying to work out a way to change difficult-to-treat cancers into something that responds well to treatment. Most cancers have receptors on their surface which bind to drugs like Tamoxifen but triple negative don’t have receptors so the drugs don’t work,” Krtin was quoted as saying by The Sunday Telegraph. “The prognosis for women with undifferentiated cancer isn’t very good so the goal is to turn the cancer back to a state where it can be treated. The ID4 protein actually stops undifferentiated stem cell cancers from differentiating so you have to block ID4 to allow the cancer to differentiate. “I have found a way to silence the genes that produce ID4 which turns cancer back into a less dangerous state,” Krtin
added. Some women with triple negative cancer respond very well to treatment while others quickly decline. The problem lies in whether the cancer cells are “differentiated” or not. Differentiated means they look more like healthy cells and they tend to grow and multiply quite slowly, and are less aggressive. However, when cancer cells are “undifferentiated” they get stuck in a dangerous primitive form, never turning into recognisable breast tissue, and spreading quickly, leading to high grade tumours. He has also discovered that upping the activity of a tumour suppressor gene called PTEN allows chemotherapy to work more effectively, so the dual treatment could prove far more effective than traditional drugs. The therapy idea saw him shortlisted for the final of the UK-based young scientists programme titled The Big Bang Fair. His efforts had hit the headlines last year when he won the Google Science Fair for creating a test which helps pick up the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease and potentially stop it spreading further.
Wanted Aussie woman asks media on FB to use her better photo, arrested later Melbourne An 18-year-old Australian woman, wanted in many property-related offences, commented on a media outlet’s Facebook post, about her escape from prison, asking them to use a better photo of hers, resulting in a social media frenzy. Police had issued Amy Sharp’s photo to local TV channels after she broke out of a Sydney police station last week. However, the hunt for Sharp, took an unexpected turn when her mug shot along with the police statement were uploaded on news channel 7 News’ FB page, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Sharp was the first person to react to the post. She posted another photo of hers as a comment and advised the channel to use that instead of the mug shot. Sharp was unhappy with the mug shot where she wore a glum expression and an
unfashionable red blanket draped over her shoulders, the report said. Sharp’s comment went viral on social media with more than 50,000 people liking her reaction. A Facebook user Bec Sackville commented, “Haha that’s a classic. Think the cops have found a new way to catch crims. Just put out an ugly photo and the crim will be in touch to give you a better one lol (sic)”.
Los Angeles A mother in the US died while saving her two-year-old son from drowning after he fell into a lake as she held the child above water long enough for him to be rescued. Chelsey Russell, a 33-year-old woman from Lakewood, Colorado, drowned in Hall’s Crossing area of Lake Powell, Utah, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. Russell was on a houseboat last week with others when her twoyear-old son went overboard, and she jumped into the water to help him. Neither of the two were wearing life jackets. Police stated that a “significant distance” developed between the pair and the boat before the vessel could be brought to a stop. A family member untied a smaller boat from the houseboat and made it to the mother and child before they went completely under the water. Russell was able to hold her
son above water long enough for him to be rescued. “The conscious child was rescued from atop the mother’s chest however; the mother was unconscious when pulled from the water,” a statement was quoted as saying by myfox8. CPR was attempted after Russell was pulled from the water, and she was taken to Crossing Marina, where she was pronounced dead after efforts to revive her failed. The child was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center in stable condition and for a precautionary medical evaluation. Meri Sias, Acting Chief Ranger at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, said in the statement that the tragic death is a reminder to wear proper safety gear. “A common denominator in more than 120 fatalities at Lake Powell in the last decades is that victims were not wearing life jackets,” she stated.

Odisha man walks NOTES 10km carrying his wife’s body Outrage in social media over Dana Majhi who could not get a mor tuar om the hospital mortuar tuaryy van fr from A TRIBAL man in Odisha walked nearly 10 kilometres with his daughter, carrying his wife’s body on his shoulder, after he was denied a mortuary van from a government hospital. The incident took place in the backward district of Kalahandi when 42-year-old Amang Deis died of tuberculosis at the district headquarters hospital at Bhawanipatna on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, locals found Dana Majhi carrying his wife’s body, which was wrapped in cloth. Majhi walked to his village Melghara in Rampur block which is about 60 km from Bhawanipatna. It was not until some local reporters spotted the duo that they went up the District Collector and arranged for an ambulance for the remaining 50 km of the journey. Majhi said that despite several attempts, he failed to get a vehicle from the hospital. “I told the hospital authorities that I am a poor man
and cannot afford a vehicle. Despite repeated requests, they said they cannot offer any help,” Majhi told a local television channel. Kalahandi District Collector Brunda D said, “As we got to know of the incident, we spoke to the CDMO and arranged for an ambulance. “I have issued instructions to the Tehsildar to provide assistance under the Harishchandra Yojana (Assistance to the poor and destitute to perform last rites). I have also asked the BDO to provide assistance from Red Cross and CMRF,” he added. The Naveen Patnaik government had launched the Mahaparayana scheme in February, offering free transportation of bodies from government hospitals to the residences of the deceased. As per the scheme, dead body carriers are supposed to be deployed at 37 government hospitals and a total of 40 vehicles were assigned for the job.
BARE KNUCKLE FOR DADLANI
Singer, Poonawalla face backlash for mocking Jain guru New Delhi A STRING of comments by singer-music composer Vishal Dadlani, mocking Jain guru Tarun Sagar for appearing nude inside the Haryana Assembly, sparked off nationwide outrage, with at least 27 police complaints filed against the artist. Dadlani’s posts on Twitter also caused embarrassment to the Aam Aadmi Party, of which he is a supporter, drawing apologiesfrom Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. At the last count, seven formal and 20-odd online complaints had been filed against Dadlani and Congress leader Tehseen Poonawala in various parts of the country for “deliberately hurting religious sentiments”. Poonawala had supported Dadlani for his comments. “People are extremely outraged by such malicious remarks,” Ankit Jain, a social media activist and one of the complaints, told Mail Today. “These complaints are being filed individually as citizens, and not under any particular banner. The government can only prosecute under Section 295A of IPC (Indian Penal Code) if the police find any merit in it.” The online fury forced Dadlani to later delete
his controversial tweet and apologise, 33 times to be precise. He also announced his retirement from political affiliations and said he was severing his relations from AAP. “I apologise if I’ve upset Jain feelings,” he tweeted. Congress leader Tehseen Poonawala, who earlier came out in support of Dadlani, posted two pictures one of Jain guru and another of a woman clad in bikini comparing how one is deemed holy while another “would be termed a slut”. Trolled Poonawala was severely trolled for this post, with pictures of Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi seeking blessings from Digambar Jain gurus. The fact that Poonawala is married to Robert Vadra’s sister made the trolling worse.Kejriwal stepped in to assuage the Jain community. “I met Shri Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj last year. Our family regularly listens to his discourses on TV. We deeply respect him and his thoughts...Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj is a very revered saint, not just for Jains but everyone. Those showing disrespect is unfortunate and should stop,” he wrote on Twitter Another AAP leader and a member of Kejriwal’s cabinet Satyendar
Jain too apologised to the Jain community on behalf of Dadlani. “I apologise for hurting feelings of Jain community by my friend @VishalDadlani. I seek ‘kshama’ from Muni Shri Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj,” Jain
said. However, outrage and complaints remained unabated. The social media battle also brought back into focus the debate of freedom of expression versus religious sentiments, with sharply divided camps exchanging barbs. References were also made to the arrests made in the past for speeches against one particular community while liberals getting away with mocking another community. The protestors demanded immediate arrest of Dadlani. “Arrest Vishal for
insulting and hurting religious sentiments of Jain community,” demanded scores of tweets. Personal attacks on Dadlani and Poonawala came thick and fast. Jain guru Sagar is a saint of Digambar sect, where monks do not wear clothes as a manifestation of their indifference to earthly emotions such as shame and also because they are not allowed any worldly possessions. The episode also led the singer-composer (Dadlani) to quit politics and affiliation work. Complainant “Both Dadlani and Poonawala made a deliberate attempt to malign the religious sentiments of the micro-minority Jain community. Soon formal FIRs would also be lodged against the duo seeking exemplary punishment for deeply hurting the religious beliefs of the community,” said Suresh Nakhua, a Mumbai-based businessman, another complainant. “Already
complaints have been filed in Mumbai and Pune. We are also expecting good number of complaints to be filed in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi where Jains are present in good numbers,” he said.

Tequila’s on me: Dwayne thanks fans on being named world’s highest-paid actor Actor Dwayne Johnson has thanked his fans for their wishes after being named the world’s highest-paid actor by Forbes magazine. The 44-year-old San Andreas star shared a picture of himself on Instagram and said it will always push him to work even harder in life. “Somewhere along this crazy road I learned (often times the hard way) the most important things I can do is be authentic, trust my gut, be the hardest worker in the room, celebrate the mistakes, be a grateful
man and always remember that it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.
“Thank you guys for everything. Tequila’s on me. Let’s get to work,” he wrote. Johnson, also known as The Rock, elbowed out reigning Downey Jr to
become the world’s highest-paid, grossing USD 64.5 million, and scored his biggest ever annual paycheck in the process. The erstwhile wrestler’s millions came from upfront fees for movies including Central Intelligence and Fast 8, as well as the forthcoming Baywatch. He bested secondranked Jackie Chan (USD 61 million), who mints money with movies in China, and Matt Damon (third), who tallied USD 55 million largely off the success of The Martian.

Chloe returned the medal to Jacobi, who had posted about the theft on social media. The former Olympian then promised to visit Chloe’s school and let her classmates know about her good deed.
Qatar security guard in race of his life
DOHA Kenyan security guard Michael Douglas Ongeri has a dream - and won’t be daunted by poverty, a 13-hour workday or training in Qatar’s searing heat, far from his family. Nor will he let the 11 kilometres (seven miles) he has to walk from work to the track then back home slow him down. “You get used to it,” Ongeri tells AFP matterof-factly. “I have to do it, it is something which is me, I like running, I have to run.” While many dream of becoming an international track star, the 22-year-old Kenyan may actually have a chance. Six days a week, he leaves work around 5 pm and heads to Doha’s biggest park, Aspire
Park, in the shadow of the city’s Khalifa Stadium that will host the World Athletics Championship in 2019. In temperatures of over 40 degrees C (104 F) and stifling humidity, the Kenyan puts on his training gear and, sweat pouring, runs up to 12 kilometres (seven miles) through Aspire’s green expanses. If it is close to his pay day - 1,400 Qatari Riyals a month ($385, 340 euros) - it is possible Ongeri will go without food as he has no cash left, sleep for five hours in a room he shares with five others and then start all over again. “He is talented and I think he could achieve his dream as a 1,500metre/ 5,000m runner,” says former athlete Liz McColgan who with her husband, John Nuttall, founded and runs the Doha Athletics Club (DAC). The couple help Ongeri train twice a week. And as a former 10,000m world champion, silver medallist at the 1988
Seoul Olympics and winner of the New York and London Marathons whose husband competed in the 1996 Olympics and whose daughter just ran in the 5,000m final in Rio, McColgan’s opinion carries weight. “He has a really good running style so I could see him being a better track runner,” says McColgan who has has been based in Qatar for the past two-and-a-half years. “I met Michael when he sent me an email to the DAC website but I had seen him training alone at the park where we train, as it was unusual to see someone running so fast on his own,” says McColgan. On the night AFP watches him train, Ongeri is surrounded by younger members of the club as Nuttall barks out instructions. “Come on Michael! Stop being so lazy!” he jokes as the security guard speeds at a pace that marks him out from the other runners.

The general tone of the planets this week is optimistic, if sometimes argumentative, and there’s absolutely no point in being down in the dumps. One piece of useful advice is to start getting fit now - if you’re not already, that is! Romantic conditions continue to be favourable, though you seem to be just a little secretive.
Venus is now sparkling away in a distant but vital part of your chart, emphasising the role that close personal relationships have to play in all aspects of your life. Love and appreciation are vital to your wellbeing. How pleasant it must be to realise that the stars are smiling on you. Indeed, you may even lose yourself in your feelings.
There are strong indications that you'll be hearing from loved ones overseas before long. Those of you who are unattached and planning an unscheduled break could be in for a surprise romance. The Sun's tough alignments will stiffen your resolve and a new friend could encourage you to pursue an ambition to the bitter end.
The planets continue to pry and probe into your innermost secrets. However, the general tenor of life is now more relaxed and assured and you'll soon be ready for anything. Foreign climes beckon, and a distant possibility could become a firm path to personal or professional happiness.
Leo is a sign with a reputation for being self-interested. There's nothing wrong in having a healthy ego, but over the next few weeks you may have to put your own feelings and interests in second place. Optimism is one of your strong points this week. It's also a fine time for determination and confidence.
Mercury is r a p i d l y approaching a new alignment with the Sun, but their meeting will not happen this week. This means that you have a little time left to consider your options before committing yourself to a special partnership. This is a perfect time to raise your sights to higher things.
Although some of you are rushed off your feet, you should realise that domestic chores and family responsibilities can be made enjoyable. All that is required is a gentle shift of attitude. Realise that financial matters are about to improve, and plan accordingly.
The entry of a single planet, Venus, into new sectors of your solar chart, is all that is required to bring a friendly gloss to your family relationships. Indeed, a spot of domestic entertaining would not come amiss. Close friends will share in your happiness towards the end of the week.
Venus is a p o w e r f u l influence for good, offering you support if you're arranging meetings, holding discussions or about to attend an interview. You'll have no trouble persuading people that you are right. All Sagittarians are now in an excellent position to do well, although you may need just one more push.
This is a profitable period, one when the way forward financially is to team up with other people. You may have an idea that you can make some money which requires expert advice or, perhaps, an extra pair of hands. On the whole, this is a satisfactory week, one in which to make the most of yourself.
Venus is a m a g i c a l influence, bringing selfconfidence and social assurance. You are right to expect your fair share of love and affection but should remember that it is often nobler to give than to receive. Your best single day could be Thursday, when, for once, people will accept your bright ideas.
It's because you were born with the Sun in Pisces that you tend to follow your intuitions and feelings. However, you must now try to be a little more clearheaded about your personal arrangements. As this is a special time of year, you may now look ahead to a fortunate period.

Technology Facebook can climb more than 20% on ad growth
New York Facebook Inc stock has the potential to climb by more than 20 percent over the next year given the growing advertising revenue among its platforms, according to a Barron‘s report on Sunday. The social media giant, which traded at just under $124 a share on Friday, has seen a recent acceleration in growth in part because of its increasing mobile ad load, or, the number of ads Facebook can serve up to its users, the report said. Facebook also has other avenues of ad load growth, including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, which have yet to fill up on ads, it said. Wall Street expects daily
average users, which are 1.1 billion now, to reach 1.7 billion in four years. By then, Facebook will have learned more about how to turn its ads into transactions, leading to growth in the advertising rate it charges, Barron‘s said. One concern, however, is Facebook‘s appeal to the young, as those under 25 years are spending a lower amount of total mobile time on Facebook compared to other age groups. Still, Barron‘s said that the company could hit $153 a share in a year, which would be a premium price, but not an outlandish one given that investors are paying dearly for rare things like growth, yield and predictability, the report said.
Facebook, Twitter, Google failed to tackle terrorism: Panel London In the first-ever widespread criticism of US technology giants and social media platforms, the British Home Affairs select committee has slammed the internet behemoths of becoming a “recruiting platform for terrorism” and “passing the buck”. Led by Keith Vaz, the British parliament‘s longest-serving Indianorigin MP, the panel rapped Facebook, Tw i t t e r, G o o g l e a n d YouTube, saying the companies were deliberately failing to stop terrorists from using their platforms to promote their sinister agenda, The Telegraph reported on Thursday. “Huge corporations like Google, Facebook and Twitter, with their billiondollar incomes, are consciously failing to tackle this threat and passing the buck by hiding behind their
supranational legal status, despite knowing that their sites are being used by the instigators of terror,” Vaz was quoted as saying. According to the committee

They specifically mentioned the case of hate preacher Anjem Choudary, stressing that Twitter and Youtube refused to remove his posts praising violent extremism despite repeated requests by the police. Choudary, 49, was convicted of terror
Islamic State (IS)affiliated terrorists. The British panel also warned that social media platforms are becoming the “vehicle of choice” for spreading terrorist propaganda. “If they continue to fail to tackle this issue and allow their platforms to become the `Wild West` of the internet, then it will erode their reputation as responsible operators,” the report added. Warning message on banned sites: ISPs run into technical issue New Delhi Internet service providers are facing technical limitations in complying with a Mumbai High Court order that required them to display error message to visitors of blockedwebsites warning them of 3 years’ jail and a fine of up to Rs 3 lakh in case they use it. “With due respect to the high court, ISPs get multiple orders from courts for blockingwebsites and webpages for multiple films. Technically, we can display one message for one website or web link, but if there are two or more than two orders for same website or page, then different error messages cannot be displayed,” ISPAI President Rajesh Charria told PTI.
Acting on petition by counsel of Eros International for movie Dhishoom, the Mumbai High Court issued an order on July 26 that ISPs should block websites illegally hosting the movie. The order asked ISPs to display four messages for those visiting the websites or webpages warning them that viewing, downloading, exhibiting or duplicating an illicit copy will be a crime that can attract
imprisonment for 3 years and also a fine of up to Rs 3 lakh for it. ISPs, he said, are clueless about which court order they need to comply with as they received orders recently from different courts to block around 11,000 websites and pages that were hosting pirated versions of Sultan, Rustom and Great Grand Masti. Asked about the monitoring mechanism
that ISPs have in place for people visiting the blocked websites, Charria said role of Internet companies is limited to blocking messages and displaying error message and monitoring falls under the domain of law enforcement agencies. A government official said monitoring compliance of content being watched by people on the Internet is “very difficult” as it will need deep inspection of messages being transmitted and accepted by computers of individuals which may lead to breach of their privacy. “Since there is a court order in place, we need to work on it and ensure its compliance. If required, we may go back to court for clarity on such orders,” the official said.

Twitter had announced the blocking of more than 125,000 accounts earlier this year which were primarily related to the IS terror group. “This brings our overall number of suspensions to 360,000 since the middle of 2015. As noted by numerous third parties, our efforts continue to drive meaningful results, including a significant shift in this type of activity off of Twitter,” the company had said in a blog post.
Amazon working on music subscription service for $5 a month
London Amazon.com Inc said it was working on a music subscription service that would cost about $5 a month and would only work on its Echo hardware, Recode reported, citing sources. Amazon would like to launch the services in September, but has not finalized deals with major music labels and publishers, Recode reported.
Amazon was preparing to launch a standalone music streaming subscription service at $9.99 per month, in line with major rivals, Reuters reported in June, citing sources. The Recode report said one sticking point, sources say, is whether Amazon will sell the cheaper service for $4 or $5 a month. Amazon was not immediately available to comment.

Iraq’s youth orchestra a musical dream that shattered LONDON For nearly six years, young Iraqis defied the war, coming from all over the country to play in an orchestra, but the emergence of Islamic State has dashed their dream of making music to bridge deadly sectarian divides. The Iraqi National Youth Orchestra’s story is told in a memoir by Paul MacAlindin, the band’s conductor from its founding in 2009 until it was forced to stop playing in 2014, an end that left him “devastated and empty and very, very broken.” MacAlindin, a Scottish musician, was eating fish and chips in an Edinburgh cafe when he saw an appeal in the local newspaper from a 17-yearold Iraqi pianist, Zuhal Sultan, for a maestro to put the orchestra together. At that point, in 2008, MacAlindin knew little about Iraq or the challenges of playing classical music in a country devastated by more than a decade of war.
“I knew pretty much what everyone else in the general public knew, which was that Iraq was a war zone,” said MacAlindin, who took the job that was funded by, among others, the British and German governments. With much of Iraq too dangerous for MacAlindin to get to in order to meet potential players, the musicians were sought on Facebook and auditioned via YouTube. Most had learned to play by watching videos online in the first place. “There was no teaching to speak of,” said MacAlindin, now 48, who before taking up the Iraqi baton had conducted orchestras and ensembles from New Zealand to Germany.
The National Youth Orchestra of Iraq eventually met in 2009 for a summer school, the first of many rehearsals and concerts for which MacAlindin would fly in to conduct. His proudest memory is their first concert, following two weeks of “orchestral bootcamp” with a team of translators to help the Kurdish and Arabic speakers communicate with their maestro and each other. “We proved that it could be done. We also proved that we were resilient enough to see the course through to the end,” he said. “And despite all the very large differences between us, we held ourselves together and nobody
walked out.” Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture, Haydn’s Symphony No. 99, and to represent the ethnic mix of the orchestra Kurdish and Arabic Iraqi pieces made up the repertoire that night and the orchestra went on to play in Britain, France and Germany. As well as nurturing musical talent, the orchestra brought together people aged between 18 and 25 from all over Iraq. “We had no interest in the politics or religion or all the other things that divide young people against each other in Iraq. “We were simply together making music. That built trust, and it allowed friendships to foster in the orchestra that wouldn’t under any other circumstances be possible.” But since the orchestra’s collapse in 2014, the year the Islamic State group declared a caliphate across swathes of Iraq and Syria, MacAlindin is pessimistic about its future.
Gender inequality costs Africa $95b a year: UN
NAIROBI The UN on Sunday urged African nations to close a gender gap that is costing an estimated $95 billion (84 billion euros) a year in lost economic potential. “Where there are high levels of gender inequality, societies are missing out,” UN Development Fund (UNDP) director Helen Clark told. “They are not harnessing the full potential of women, and that costs economically, at the family level, community level and the national level.” Citing agriculture as an example, Clark said that in many African nations, women are banned from owning or inheriting land, making it hard for them to borrow money. “They then don’t have the finance to buy the best seeds, the best fertilisers. So women, despite working very, very hard,
end up producing less, being less productive,” she said in Nairobi, where she was attending the Tokyo International Conference on African Development. The UNDP said in a statement that male-female inequality in sub-Saharan Africa costs the continent some $95 billion each year in lost economic potential. In 2014, the cost was higher, at $105 billion, it said. “Gender equality is a good thing in its own right, and it’s the right thing to do, but often it’s not until you start talking about economics that people think my goodness, it has implications if we don’t do something about this,” said Clark, former New Zealand prime minister and a candidate for UN Secretary General.

iPhones could be hacked with one tap SAN FRANCISCO Apple has issued a security update to fix vulnerabilities found after fierce spyware created by an Israeli firm was used to target an Emirati dissident, US media reported. The company released
its latest iOS version, 9.3.5, on Thursday, which the New York Times said was meant to fix three security vulnerabilities in Apple products. Those vulnerabilities had been targeted by the NSO Group, an Israeli spyware company, which has created a product that can rifle through a phone to read
texts, track calls and record sounds, among other capabilities, the New York Times reported. Apple told various US media outlets that it fixed the vulnerabilities as soon it learned about them. The spyware was
detected when used against Ahmed Mansoor, a human rights activist in the United Arab Emirates, who has been repeatedly targeted using spyware. After receiving a suspicious text with a link, he reported the matter to the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab which worked in conjunction
US firefighter feels ‘normal’ year after face transplant
NEW YORK A US firefighter who received a face transplant a year ago said Wednesday that he feels normal again and even managed to swim for the first time in 15 years. Patrick Hardison, 42, from Senatobia, Mississippi, was horribly disfigured when the roof of a burning home collapsed on top of him in 2001. He underwent the complex surgery in New York in August 2015, when doctors told him that he faced only a 50:50 chance of success. “My family and I took a trip to Disney World this past June and I swam in the pool with them. That’s something I had not done in 15 years!” he told a news conference to mark the anniversary. His new eyelids and ability to blink mean that his sight has improved and he can

“once again drive a car” and sleep more soundly.“No more stares from strangers. I’m pretty much back to being a normal guy, doing normal activities,” Hardison said.He thanked his medical team and his family, saying that he wanted to encourage other people to explore the possibility of getting a face transplant.More than 100 doctors, nurses and medical support staff took part in the 26-hour transplant last August at the NYU Langone Medical Center. His donor was David Rodebaugh, a 26-year-old awardwinning BMX cyclist from Brooklyn, who died in a road accident. His mother agreed to organ donation.Hardison has had several follow-up procedures over the last year, mainly to adjust his eyelids and lips, and to remove feeding and breathing tubes. He is scheduled to meet Rodebaugh’s family in the fall, the hospital said. Eduardo Rodriquez, who led the surgery, said he was amazed by his patient’s recovery, saying it had “surpassed all of our expectations.”Face transplants have become increasingly common since the first, partial face transplant was carried out by doctors in France in 2005 on a woman who had been mauled by her dog.
with San Francisco-based mobile security firm Lookout to research the affair, USA Today reported.“The attack allows an adversary to silently jailbreak an iOS device and stealthily spy on victims, collecting information from apps including Gmail, Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, Calendar, FaceTime, Line, Mail.Ru, and others,” Lookout said in a blog post. John ScottRailton, one of the authors of a report issued by Citizen Lab, said researchers had traced the link on Mansoor’s phone to NSO Group, USA Today reported. However it was not known which country or entity had used the spyware to target him. “This discovery is further proof that mobile platforms are fertile ground for gathering sensitive information from target victims, and well-resourced threat actors are regularly exploiting that mobile environment,” Lookout said in its blog post. Apple users are being advised to install the latest update.
Worms found in burgers from two Kentucky McDonald’s restaurants
Mayfield At least two people have reported finding worms in food from McDonald’s restaurants in two Kentucky communities. Mayfield resident Madison Stephens tells WPSD-TV that she visited the local McDonald’s on Sunday and purchased food for her and her 1-year-old son. She says that as she was about to bite into her hamburger, a live worm fell out.At the McDonald’s in
Draffenville, about 25 miles away from Mayfield, Lacey Jo Lovett says she also found a worm in her burger on Tuesday. Stephens says she contacted McDonald’s about the incident, and they sent her a $10 gift card. McDonald’s spokesperson Michael Love says in a statement that the company is investigating and will “take all appropriate measures to resolve the matter”.
Obama establishes world’s largest marine reserve in Hawaii MIAMI President Barack Obama on Friday burnished his environmental legacy by establishing the world’s largest marine reserve, home to thousands of rare sea creatures in the northwestern Hawaiian islands. Obama’s announcement more than quadrupled the size of the existing protected area, known as the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, which is now 582,578 square miles (1.5 million square kilometers) - about four times the size of California. The waters are home to pristine coral reefs and hundreds of animals found nowhere else on Earth, including a new species of ghost octopus discovered only this year and the world’s oldest living organism, black coral, which is estimated to be 4,265 years old. Some 14 million seabirds soar over the area and make their nests on the islands, including a 65-year-old albatross named Wisdom. The area is also home to threatened green turtles and endangered Hawaiian monk seals. The marine monument was established in 2006 by then president George W. Bush and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. “By expanding the monument, President Obama has increased protections for one of the most biologically and culturally significant places on the planet,” said Joshua Reichert, an executive vice president at the Pew Charitable Trusts. Greenpeace also hailed what it called a “bold decision” that will ban commercial fishing and mineral extraction in the region. US Senator Brian Schatz, a
Democrat from Hawaii, said in a statement that the expansion will create “a safe zone that will replenish stocks of tuna, promote biodiversity and fight climate change.” Obama “has given Native
native Hawaiians. The White House said permits will also be available for noncommercial fishing - including recreational fishing and the removal of fish and other resources for Native Hawaiian
Hawaiians a greater voice in managing this precious resource,” Schatz said. But some expressed disappointment over the move to expand the zone to 200 miles from shore, saying that it imperils fishermen’s ability to make a living. “Closing 60 percent of Hawaii’s waters to commercial fishing, when science is telling us that it will not lead to more productive local fisheries, makes no sense,” said Edwin Ebiusi Jr., chair of the Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council. “Today is a sad day in the history of Hawaii’s fisheries and a negative blow to our local food security.” Matt Rand, director of the Global Ocean Legacy project at the Pew Charitable Trusts, took a different view, saying that the change should have “a minimal economic impact” on fishing in the area. The archipelago and its surrounding waters are considered a sacred area by
cultural practices - in the area. Obama’s announcement came just days before the kickoff of a major global conservation meeting including thousands of heads of state, scientists and policy makers, which the US president is expected to address in Hawaii on September 1. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s world congress is held every four years at a different location around the globe. This year it runs from September 1-10. Obama will also travel to Midway Atoll, inside the protected area, to underscore the decision. There he will make the case that climate change “makes protecting our public lands and waters more important than ever,” according to the White House. The timing of Obama’s announcement is important because it “will inspire probably the people that are most interested and most engaged in conservation globally,” said Rand.

We don’t want to live with Pakistan anymore: Baloch leader Bugti Washington Pakistani forces are engaged in a “tsunami of human rights violations” in Balochistan, a top Baloch leader alleged on Saturday as he sought the help of the international community, including India in the nationalist movement.
Brahumdagh Bugti, president of the Baloch Republican Party and the grandson of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti who was killed in an encounter with the Pakistani army 10 years ago, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising the issue. “Pak forces are engaged in tsunami of human rights violations. with Pakistan anymore,” said Switzerland-based Bugti as he demanded a referendum of Baloch people under the supervision of the United Nations. Speaking over phone from Switzerland where he had gone for a commemorative event to pay homage to his grandfather, Bugti
urged the international community, including the US, Nato countries, Israel and India, to help them fight their cause. He said he is ready for a dialogue with the Pakistani government but insisted that there is no going back on the freedom movement. Balochistan, of the size of France, is Pakistan’s largest province which has been under “illegal Pakistani occupation for the last seven decades”, he said. Bugti said Modi’s reference to Balochistan in his Independence Day speech is the “most powerful statement” in the last seven decades. “It is for the first time that an Indian prime minister has spoken. We believe that India should have taken this step a long time ago,” he said, adding that he is convinced about Balochistan’s freedom. “I am thoroughly indebted to Prime Minister Modi. I thank
GPS device in stolen cigarette carton helps nab robbers, sent to jail for 12 yrs
Maryland A GPS device inside a stolen carton of cigarettes led to the arrest of two robbery suspects in Maryland. According to The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown report, Shawn Bullard, 42, and Warren Strouse, 45, entered pleas this week in connection with the December 2015 robbery of a Hagerstown store. Hagerstown police say they had placed GPS devices on the carton of cigarettes with the store
manager’s permission following a series of robberies in November. When the robbery occurred the following month, the store clerk offered one of the suspects the box of cigarettes, which he took. Police later located the suspects after tracking the GPS signal on the carton. Bullard was sentenced to 12 years in prison with six years suspended; Strouse was sentenced to 12 years with eight years suspended.
Prime Minister Modi for speaking raising the voice of Baloch people in his Independence Day address,” he said, alleging that crimes by Pakistan against the Baloch have shocked global community. Use of aerial bombardment, use of gases have become routine, he claimed and added that Balochistan is the world capital of missing people. “We are political people. We want to solve this with peaceful means. But there is no way we are going to be part of the Pakistan any more. We want freedom of Pakistan. We are not fools to try our luck again and again with Pakistan. We are ready to negotiate through peaceful means,” Bugti said. Stating that his immediate course of action would be to create awareness in the international community, Bugti, at the same time, also called for military assistance to the Baloch freedom struggle. “So far we have never received any support from any international countries, including India. We want to request India and other countries to help Balochistan. It is genocide of (the) Baloch (people) in Pakistan going on,” he said.
Indonesia seizes hundreds of frozen pangolins
SURABAYA Indonesian authorities have seized more than 650 critically endangered pangolins found hidden in freezers and arrested a man for allegedly breaking wildlife protection laws, police said Friday. Police discovered the pangolins, known as “scaly anteaters”, when they raided a house in Jombang district on the main island of Java after local residents became suspicious about the large number of freezers in the property. A total of 657 pangolins, which are consumed as a luxury dish in China and used in traditional medicine, were found wrapped in plastic and stored in five large freezers, East Java province police spokesman Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono told AFP. The house owner, a 55-year-old man whose identity was not
disclosed, was arrested and has been named a suspect, a step in the Indonesian legal system meaning that authorities believe they have enough evidence to consider filing charges. He could face five years in prison and a fine of 100 million rupiah ($7,500) for breaking wildlife protection laws.“The suspect insisted the Pangolins were not his, a friend asked him to store the animals because he has freezers,” Yuwono said, adding the friend named by the suspect was also being sought. The suspect, who was arrested during the police raid on August 15, insisted he had not sold any of the pangolins and refused to tell police where they were to be sent, the spokesman said.Pangolins are sought after in China and other parts of Asia for their meat, skin and scales.

State opposition leader Luke Foley said the ban was “breaking the hearts of thousands of good men and women across the state”. Foley said the ban would “criminalise an industry, a sport and an Australian way of life”. “We have the uncivilised and cruel ambush of working people,” he said during the debate.
Uproar as Australian state bans greyhound racing
SYDNEY Greyhound racing has been outlawed in Australia’s most populous state despite fierce resistance from dog owners, with the New South Wales opposition leader dubbing the ban a “cruel ambush” of working class people. The ban, which will take effect from July 1st 2017, was passed in an overnight session by the New South Wales parliament in Sydney, state Premier Mike Baird said. Although opposed by the dog racing industry and sparking heated debate within his rightleaning coalition government, the ban is intended to save thousands of dogs. “I’m proud of the decision we have made to save thousands upon thousands of dogs from cruelty and death,” Baird said in a statement Wednesday. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right decision,” he said, adding that the government would help trainers and breeders whose livelihoods were impacted. Australia has one of the world’s largest greyhound racing industries, but Baird introduced the ban following a string of scandals including “live baiting” and the slaughter of tens of thousands of dogs. Live baiting has been banned for decades in Australia but the

Auto, aerospace industries warm to 3D printing EDEN PRAIRIE New 3D printing technology unveiled this week sharply increases the size of objects that can be produced, offering new possibilities to remake manufacturing in the auto, aerospace and other major industries. One application demonstrated by 3D printing machinery maker Stratasys would allow airlines to
pick made-to-order airplane interiors that could be tweaked with the click of a mouse. By turning the manufacturing plane vertical from the standard horizontal, the “printer” has the potential to create components of unlimited size. “We’re now talking about parts in feet and meters versus centimeters and inches,” said Rich Garrity, Americas president for Stratasys. “It’s not just a concept.”The advances, by Stratasys, Siemens and others, are beginning to push 3D printing
well into the center of manufacturing from around the edges. 3D printing employs sophisticated computer simulations and software to direct “print” objects from powdered, molten and filament materials like nylon, resins, clays, thermoplastics and metals. The technology has not always
lived up to sky-high hype, but leading manufacturers remain bullish over its potential to shake up the factory floor. “It is something that is going to be a game-changer,” said Teresa Finchamp, director of operations and quality in Boeing’s department for new technologies. Benefits include the ability to reduce weight by substituting plastic compounds for metals. And by making use of a “digital toolbox” and made-to-order technology, it can also can reduce the need for warehouse
Japanese truck driver playing Pokemon Go kills pedestrian
TOKYO A Japanese truck driver playing Pokemon Go while driving hit two women, killing one and injuring the other, in Japan’s first death related to the Nintendo Co craze. The driver said he had been distracted by the game after his arrest for negligent driving following the accident on Wednesday evening, a spokesman for the Tokushima prefectural police said. “The driver is still in custody. No decision has been made yet on whether to proceed with a prosecution,” he added A spokesman for Niantic Inc, which developed Pokemon GO jointly with Nintendo affiliate Pokemon Company, said the company had added a pop-up to the Pokemon Go screen when it detected an increase in speed asking for confirmation the user was not driving. He didn’t say whether the developer would take further steps to guard against
accidents. A spokesman for Nintendo offered condolences to the family of the dead woman. “Pokemon Company and Niantic endeavour to create an environment where people can play the game safely and we will continue to do that,” he added when asked whether the company would take any new measures to guard against accidents. The popularity of augmentedreality Pokemon Go around the world has generated crowds of people in parks and other public places as user search for monsters, but has also been blamed for injuries and robberies of distracted users. Signs at parks and other places in Japan have asked users to avoid creating a nuisance. Pokemon incidents elsewhere have spurned warnings from authorities for users to play responsibly.
space and many conventional manufacturing tools. The ultimate prize is finished items equal in quality to today’s goods, but which are cheaper and faster to make. Siemens argues that 3D printing, along with an increased role of robotics, greater automation and other innovations are creating a “digital factory” that will force a day of reckoning among manufacturers. “These technologies all evolve so fast,” said Andreas Saar, a vice president for additive manufacturing at Siemens. “We believe if people don’t connect, they’re going to have a huge problem,” he told AFP. Boeing, Siemens and Ford are all corporate partners of Stratasys that joined a press tour of its factory in Eden Prairie near Minneapolis.Stratasys on Wednesday showcased an “infinite build” printer that turns the plane of production on its side, allowing the printing of items of “practically unlimited part size,” according to the company. Also on display was a 3D robotic demonstrator utilizing Siemens software that positions and rotates an item as it is printed. The process, allowing for precise movements on an eightaxis motion system, is suited to produce lightweight components that must also be very strong. During the visit, the device was building a black ribbed dome that could be used on a rocket. Stratasys says the applications of the robotic technology are broad and could also be utilized in the oil and medical equipment industries.
Norway man rescued after climbing into public toilet
OSLO Firefighters in Norway have pulled a man from the inside of a toilet after he dived in to rescue a friend’s phone and became stuck in the tank below. Cato Berntsen Larsen climbed feetfirst into the facility after his friend dropped the phone while urinating. Mr Berntsen Larsen said he had volunteered to enter the tank, which is emptied once a season, but became sick as he stood thigh-deep in its contents. The 20-year-old spent an hour completely enclosed in the small area. “I panicked because I hate confined spaces,” he told Norwegian newspaper VG. “It was damn disgusting - the worst I have experienced. There were animals down there too.” To make matters worse, Mr Berntsen Larsen quickly threw up after entering the tank, which was standing room only. The unfortunate turn of events had begun when Mr Berntsen Larsen’s friend shouted for help to get his phone back. “I did not think twice,” Mr
Berntsen Larsen said about his decision to go in. But the amateur diver immediately realised he was stuck. He later described himself as “apparently thin enough to go down but not thin enough to come up again”. Firefighters were forced to destroy the toilet, which is now out of service. Mr Berntsen Larsen sustained injuries to his upper arms and said he believed he had been bitten several times. He was treated at hospital and given antibiotics. He was not successful in retrieving the phone.

Two nuns killed in Mississippi, may be victims of home break-in Mississippi Two nuns who worked as nurses and helped the poor in rural Mississippi were found slain in their home, perhaps victims of a break-in and vehicle theft, officials said Thursday. Authorities would not say if they have a suspect but disclosed that they’d recovered a car missing from the home and were towing it to a crime lab for analysis. They also did not release a cause of death, but the Reverend Greg Plata said police told him the sisters were stabbed. The nuns were identified as Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, both 68. Their bodies were taken to a state crime lab for autopsies. The women, both nurse practitioners, were found on Thursday morning when they didn’t report to work at a nearby clinic, where they provided flu shots, insulin and other medical care for children and adults who couldn’t afford it. “They were two of the sweetest, most gentle women you can imagine. Their vocation was helping the poor,” said Plata, who oversees a 35-member Catholic church the sisters attended. Maureen Smith, a spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of
Jackson, said there were signs of a break-in at the home and the nuns’ vehicle was missing. Later, Warren Strain, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said the blue Toyota Corolla was found

abandoned on Thursday evening on a secluded street barely a mile from the home, the vehicle apparently undamaged. He said police haven’t determined when the car was abandoned and it was being towed to the state crime lab near Jackson, Mississippi’s capital city. Authorities didn’t release a motive and it wasn’t clear if the nuns’ religious work had anything to do with the slayings. “I have an awful feeling in the pit
Merrill had worked in Mississippi for more than 30 years, according to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky. She was from Massachusetts and joined the order in 1979. Two years later, she moved to the South and found her calling in the Mississippi Delta community, according to a 2010 article in The Journey, a publication by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. When asked about her ministry, Merrill was humble.

Hiker recounts 30-day ordeal WELLINGTON A Czech hiker who survived a month trapped in a remote snowbound hut in New Zealand after her partner died in a fall said Friday she knew it would be perilous to try to reach
civilisation. Pavlina Pizova broke down in tears as she relived details of her harrowing ordeal, watching avalanches crash down the surrounding mountainsides while she waited in the hut hoping to be rescued. A search party found Pizova on Wednesday more than a month after she and her partner, Ondrej
Petr, set out to walk the 32kilometre (20-mile) Routeburn track, which traverses the Southern Alps in the southwest of New Zealand. Petr’s body was recovered on Friday. Pizova said that after leaving Petr’s body she
had to fight her way through deep snow for two days before finding a ranger’s hut and breaking in, to find food and heating. “I made a few attempts to walk out from the hut, but my feet, the weather conditions and the deep snow discouraged me from doing so,” she said. Given her poor physical
Sydney restaurant launches Pokemon burgers
SYDNEY A Sydney restaurant is capitalising on an appetite for all things Pokemon Go by selling a limited number of burgers based on characters from the blockbuster smartphone game. Sydney’s Hashtag Burger and its pop-up restaurant Down N’ Out Burgers are offering 100 ‘Pokeburgs’ a day until Sept. 3, with long queues of people lining up on Friday to get a taste of a yellow Pikachu, pink Charmander or green Bulbasaur
burger. Staff said the Pikachu burger with corn chip ears had proved the most popular but the restaurant had decided that customers couldn’t choose which character they get, in line with the surprise element of the augmented-reality game. Pokemon Go, developed by Niantic and an affiliate of Japan’s Nintendo Co Ltd, sees players walk around real-life neighbourhoods to hunt down virtual cartoon characters visible only on their smartphone screens.
ROME Shoddy, price-cutting renovations, in breach of local building regulations, could be partly to blame for the high death toll from this week’s devastating earthquake in central Italy, according to a prosecutor investigating the disaster. As questions mount over the deaths of nearly 300 people, prosecutor Giuseppe Saieva indicated that property owners who commissioned suspected sub-standard work could be held responsible for contributing to the quake’s deadly impact. Saieva, who works in the Rieti
region between Rome and the quake’s epicentre, said the tragedy could not simply be filed away as an unavoidable natural disaster. “If the buildings had been constructed as they are in Japan they wouldn’t have collapsed,” he told La Repubblica. Within hours of the quake hitting on Wednesday Saieva was in Amatrice, the small mountain town hit hardest by the quake. He is inspecting the damage there before opening a preliminary investigation for possible culpable homicide and
condition, the amount of snow and knowing the risk of avalanches, she decided it was best to stay in a safe place. “At the hut I saw numerous avalanches coming down.” Pizova said the couple realised they made mistakes at the start of their hike by not recording their plans, not carrying a locator beacon and underestimating the weather. “The conditions were extreme, we encountered heavy snowfall and low cloud which contributed to our enforced overnighting in the open,” she said. It was while trying to reach the hut that Petr fell and died. “After his death it took me another two nights out in the open before I reached the safety of the hut.” Recent heavy snow meant she was walking through waist-deep snow. With track markers covered, she had to find her own way. “During this time I got extremely cold, exhausted, and my feet were frozen.” Pizova urged other hikers not to repeat her mistakes. “I would like to use this opportunity to pass a strong message on to anyone intending to travel in the New Zealand mountains to seek very good information and mainly respect the winter conditions and quickly changing weather.”
Netflix taunts N Korea ondemand TV service on Twitter
SEOUL Netflix is poking fun at North Korea’s recent foray into ondemand TV, calling itself a “Manbang knockoff” on its Twitter bio. The tongue-in-cheek change to the Netflix US bio comes after Pyongyang proudly unveiled a video streaming service called Manbang (“Everywhere”), which was instantly described as a Netflix-style service by Western media. The system allows viewers with some sort of Internet access to enjoy the highly-propagandised output of its four state-run TV channels at their leisure. A programme introducing the service that aired on Korean Central Television (KCTV) last week said it was available to any institute,
company or household that subscribes to North Korea’s state-operated intranet. The number of intranet subscribers in North Korea is unknown, but KCTV said “hundreds” of people had signed up to the Manbang service in Sinuiju - one of three cities where the system is being rolled out.Set up in 2000, the intranet only allows access to selected, government-approved websites and mostly functions as a communication platform between government agencies, universities, industry and commerce.Outside of hotels catering to foreigners, access to the full-blown internet in North Korea is for the super-elite only - a few hundred people or maybe 1,000 at most.
boosted productivity and incomes. But that trend is now reversing as the baby-boomers age, leaving the young to look after them - either by staying at home
or paying for their care. “Many Asia-Pacific countries are transiting from a period when they reaped a ‘demographic dividend’ to one where they face the prospect of paying a ‘demographic tax’,” the study said. By 2030, there will be 511 million elderly people in the region, out of 3.8 billion, according to the
study. Japan will become the first “ultraaged” country, with elderly people accounting for 28 percent of its population, while a fifth of people in Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan will be 65. The APRC warned governments would need to invest heavily to care for their ageing populations, warning current levels are “unsustainable” as medical costs are growing faster than the economy in many countries. Asia’s ageing rate is “an unprecedented challenge,” said the study, which covered 14 AsiaPacific markets.“The problem is big, it’s very urgent,” said Hedrich, adding that finding solutions will be complex.“What we want to achieve with this report is to act as a broad call of action for governments, individuals, insurers, healthcare professionals and organisations to start acting now.”
experts have highlighted the widespread use of relatively cheap cement beams for house extensions and renovations as a possible factor explaining why so many buildings collapsed. Heavya and inflexible, the cement beams become deadly if released by shaking because they will crush older walls beneath them. “If it emerges that individuals cut corners, they will be pursued and those that have made mistakes will pay a price,” the prosecutor
said. The issue of whether some of the deaths could have been avoided is particularly acute in the Amatrice area because it is so close (50 kilometres, 32 miles) to L’Aquila, which was hit by a 2009 earthquake in which over 300 people perished. An outcry over the shoddy, corrupt building practices which led to so many buildings in the university city being inadequately prepared for a quake led to the national Civil Protection agency making almost one billion euros ($1.2 billion) available for upgrading buildings in quakevulnerable areas.
Asia’s ageing population to cost $20t
SINGAPORE Asia’s population is ageing faster than anywhere in the world, a study said Thursday, warning the swelling ranks of the elderly will cost the region $20 trillion in healthcare by 2030. Health systems, businesses and families across Asia-Pacific will come under huge pressure as some 200 million people pass the age of 65 by then, according to the Singapore-based Asia Pacific Risk Center. Yearly spending on caring for the elderly is expected to reach $2.5 billion - five times the cost in 2015 - the study said. “The Asia-Pacific region is ageing at a faster rate than any other region in the world,” said APRC executive director Wolfram Hedrich. Surging growth in Asia over the past few decades prompted an baby boom in many Asia-Pacific countries, creating a large and cheap labour force that in turn

Married for 62 yrs, couple cries after being separated in care homes
Vancouver, British Columbia A photograph of a crying elderly Canadian couple in wheelchairs, separated into two different care homes after 62 years of marriage because no beds were available together, has received international attention. Wolfram Gottschalk, 83, of Surrey, British Columbia was put in an assisted living home in January after he suffered dementia health complications, making it impossible for wife Anita, 81, to care for him at home. Four months later, Anita entered a different facility despite family efforts to keep them together. The facilities are half an hour apart, with family driving Anita to see Wolfram several times a week. Granddaughter Ashley Bartyik took “the saddest photo I have ever taken” when her grandparents were brought together recently. She notes that he reaches and cries out for her. Wolfram was diagnosed with lymphoma August 23. Now, the family is desperate for the couple to be together to live out their remaining days. “I see desperation,” Bartyik said. “I see people married for 62 years pulled apart by a system. I see the love they have for each other.” She took to social media to draw attention to the family’s plight
and said the family had been working to find a care home to accommodate both grandparents. But the couple’s immediate health concerns led them to be put in separate facilities. “It’s a little bit of a broken system right now,” Bartyik said. She said the first call from the local health authority came August 25, after the photo received international attention. “We were told he is a top priority,” Bartyik said. She said Anita is more aware of what is happening than her husband. She said her grandfather’s dementia is growing and the family is afraid Wolfram soon won’t remember Anita. “With the news of cancer, our fight to have them in the same facility is even more urgent,” Bartyik said. Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said the authority tries to keep families together but that Wolfram’s care needs are higher than Anita’s. She said a facility must meet both patients’ needs, and the authority expects to complete that work in several weeks. “This is very upsetting for the family and is upsetting for us as well,” Juma said. “It’s not unusual for senior couples to need different levels of care at different times,” she said.
Pizza by drone: Unmanned air delivery set to take off in NZ WELLINGTON/SYDNEY A New Zealand pizza chain aims to become the world’s first company to offer a commercial drone delivery service, a milestone in the onceunthinkable quest to save time and money with an air-borne supply chain dispensing with people. Some of the world’s biggest companies including Amazon.com Inc and Google, or Alphabet Inc as it is known, have plans to make deliveries by drone and aviation authorities in the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand have been relaxing rules to allow air deliveries.Last month, US convenience store chain 7Eleven Inc conducted the first single commercial drone delivery - coffee, donuts and a chicken sandwich - as part of a trial. Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Ltd conducted a demonstration pizza delivery by drone in the New Zealand city of Auckland on Thursday, and afterwards said it aimed to be the first company to launch a regular drone service, late this year.
“We’ve always said that it doesn’t make sense to have a 2-tonne machine delivering a 2-kilogram order,” Domino’s Chief Executive
Officer Don Meij said in a statement. With clear skies and small population of 4.4 million, New Zealand last year became one of the world’s first countries to clear commercial drone deliveries. “Our enabling laws and regulation means we have the ideal environment,” New Zealand Transport Minister Simon Bridges said after the Domino’s test flight. But Philip Solaris, director of another drone company, X-craft Enterprises, said that while New Zealand has
Polish dig turns up no sign of fabled ‘Nazi gold train’
WARSAW Two treasure hunters who have been digging for a Nazi gold train believed to be buried in southwest Poland said on Thursday they had given up after two weeks and zero results. “There’s nothing,” said Andrzej Gaik, spokesman for the PolishGerman team, which carried out the search near the city of Walbrzych using groundpenetrating radar, bulldozers and drills. “Last night we shut down operations, which we have to admit, proved fruitless,” he told
AFP. He added however that the team plan to resume their search
Wife fell to death as husband used smartphone app for navigation London A 53-year-old woman was killed while descending a 3,000-feet mountain after her husband used a smartphone app to navigate instead of a paper map which apparently showed the wrong path, the media reported. Jane Wilson and her husband Gary were looking for a safe route off Tryfan peak in Snowdonia, Wales at dusk when the fateful incident happened in March and was under investigation, telegraph.co.uk reported on Friday. Instead of a paper map, Wilson was carrying the smartphone app by Ordnance Survey -- the national mapping agency for Great Britain and one of the world’s largest producers of maps. The couple, both experienced mountain walkers and scramblers for six years, had decided not to climb the summit but instead headed across the
mountain’s west face using Wilson’s smartphone, the report said.Gary was quoted as saying to the coroner that his wife went
a short distance ahead of him to look for a suitable route. “I asked ‘Is it OK? Is it safe?’, and we said we would only go if we both agreed,” Gary was quoted as saying. He then described how he heard a kind of exclamation, then another, followed by the sound
accommodating regulations on drones, Domino’s would be held back by a rule requiring drones to be kept in sight at all times. “I can’t truly see how commercially viable that idea is because you would have to literally have somebody walking along to keep it in the line of sight, watching it at all times,” Solaris said.Domino’s service would still need to overcome “random hazards (like) power lines, moving vehicles, children in the backyard playing”, he said. The Domino’s and 7-Eleven deliveries both used drones provided by US-headquarted Australian drone company Flirtey. Domino’s said it is also looking at opportunities for drone delivery trials in Australia, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Japan and Germany. In Australia, drone deliveries will be legal next month, provided the drones stay at least 30 metres (100 feet) from houses. In the United States, drones will be allowed to make deliveries from Aug. 29, but not across state lines or over people.
of rock fall. Jane, who worked at Manchester University as a librarian, fell 30 feet down a vertical cliff,
fracturing her skull and sustaining other severe injuries. “We are very sorry for Mr Wilson’s loss and we extend our sympathies to him and his family,” Andrew Loveless, Director at Ordnance Survey, was quoted as saying in the report. “We encourage our customers to
carry a paper version of the place they are exploring,” he added. Realising his wife had fallen, Wilson climbed to a safer ledge and raised an alarm. He was later led to safety by members of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team, who found his wife’s body 500 feet lower down. Chris Lloyd, who was among the Ogwen Rescue team, described the route the pair had taken as “not a straightforward path”. “The image would have been small and not as detailed as on a proper map. There is no easy way up Tryfan but there are easier routes,” Tim Bird, the leader of the rescue team was heard speaking at the investigation. Mountain rescue teams present at the investigation said it is always better to use a paper map and compass to navigate instead of or in addition to any electronic navigation aids.
in September at a site “right nearby” if they manage to secure authorisation. The search results from a media frenzy sparked in August 2015 when German national Andreas Richter and Piotr Koper, a Pole, claimed to have located an armoured Naziera train using groundpenetrating radar. They said they had discovered several carriages measuring 98 metres (320 feet) long, buried some eight to nine metres (26 to 28 foot) underground. They said they believed the contents were mostly weapon prototypes, although local legend spoke of artwork, jewels and gold stolen by the Nazis.

Clinton receives first intelligence briefing as nominee NY Hillary Clinton received her first national security briefing Saturday as the Democratic presidential nominee, meeting with intelligence officials for an overview of the major threats facing the nation around the globe.Clinton attended the briefing for more than two hours at the FBI office in White Plains, New York, near her suburban New York City home. Republican Donald Trump received his briefing earlier this month, a customary move for major party nominees but one that has been the subject of a political tussle during the campaign. Trump was campaigning on Saturday in Iowa, headlining Republican Sen. Joni Ernst’s annual “Roast and Ride” fundraiser at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The celebrity businessman was not planning to join the 42-mile motorcycle ride that is part of the event but

bringing his campaign to a state where polls show a tight contest, a rare bright spot for Trump amid a sea of challenging battleground states. In an interview with The Associated Press, Iowa’s Republican Gov. Terry Branstad said he’d like Trump to focus his message more on a renewable fuel standard that is important to his state’s corn farmers. Trump and Clinton are polling “about even” in Iowa, he added, and he’d like Trump to launch campaign ads in the state since Clinton has already done so. “I don’t like that but hopefully that’s going to change,” he said. The activities capped a week that saw some of the harshest exchanges between the two presidential rivals, with Clinton asserting in a fiery Reno, Nevada, speech on Thursday that Trump was stoking a “radical fringe” within the Republican Party, including anti-Semites and white supremacists. Trump, who is trying to win over moderate voters and minorities who have been unsettled by some of his provocative remarks and policy proposals, has tried to paint Clinton as a racist. The Republican released an online video that includes footage of the former first lady referring to some young criminals as “super predators” in the 1990s. The video also shows Clinton’s former Democratic rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders,
Actor lets loose crickets, worms in NY subway train to ‘raise awareness’
New York It could have been a scene straight out of a horror movie. A woman who said she was selling crickets and worms on a crowded New York City subway car appeared to become frazzled by some teenagers and let the critters loose on riders, then urinated on herself, according to social media posts and news reports. Riders on the subway train were locked in close quarters with the bugs for half an hour during rush hour on Wednesday evening after a passenger pulled the train’s emergency brake while they were on the Manhattan Bridge. Two days later, on Friday, a woman who identified herself as Zaida Pugh came forward, saying she staged the episode as a prank to raise awareness of how people treat the homeless. She said she is an actress and was not concerned about a backlash from
inconvenienced commuters. “Of course they’ll be angry with me, but I guess I’m just doing me. I’m waking people up with my shows, my acts,” she said by telephone. The teenagers, whom she said were also acting, had pushed her as she offered the creepycrawlies for sale, and knocked the container holding them into the air. After the crickets were set free, some of them jumped on passengers, who apparently were not in on the prank. “Never seen a crowd get so panicked so fast, everyone rushed to the other side of the train,” one rider, Ezra Mechaber, wrote on Twitter. “Mass hysteria in a locked, enclosed space is something else.” Some people whipped out smartphones and began recording. In one video posted online, the woman yelled, “Why’d you have to hit me?” and “My crickets!”

also has been waged in the national security space. In Las Vegas, Trump met Friday with two dozen Latino supporters to discuss strategies for boosting Hispanic turnout in the swing state. He has sought to make the case that his economic policies would be better for small minority-owned businesses than those of Clinton. “People don’t know how well we’re doing with the Hispanics, the Latinos,” Trump said at his hotel just off the Vegas Strip. “We’re doing really well.” Trump has suggested that minorities have been left behind by Democratic economic policies and hammered the nation’s sluggish GDP growth as “a catastrophe.” But he has continued to send mixed signals about a key issue for many Latinos: immigration. While he has not wavered on his desire to build an impenetrable wall along the border with Mexico, he exhibited indecisiveness in recent days about his plan to deport 11 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. Aides have said he would announce his immigration policy in a speech in the coming days, but his campaign has yet to set a date.

German mayor fires Muslim intern on first day for refusing to remove headscarf Berlin A 48-year-old Palestinian refugee, hired as an intern at a German mayor’s office, was fired on the first day of work because she refused to remove her headscarf.
Mayor Elisabeth Herzog-von der Heide of the town Luckenwalde, near Berlin, fired the intern after one day because she would not take off her headscarf, The Local reported. “The Islamic headscarf is a means of expressing a religious worldview,” Herzog-von der Heide was quoted as saying. The mayor said that therefore, wearing a headscarf would violate the neutrality of the town hall, where crucifixes are also
not allowed. The Palestinian woman had been hired for a project called ‘Perspectives for Refugees’ and was set to work for six weeks. The woman said that she did not want to remove the headscarf in
the presence of men, and therefore Herzog-von der Heide said they would not be able to offer her a suitable working environment. She said it would have been better to clarify this policy before hiring her. A representative from the state parliament and Angela Merkel’s conservative CDU party, Sven Petke, criticised the Social Democrat (SPD) mayor. “There is no legal basis for this

decision,” Petke said, noting that the German Constitutional Court had ruled that personal beliefs and their connection to certain items of clothing should not be objectionable. “It is something different than a crucifix on the wall,” he said. However, members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party praised the decision to dismiss the intern. “If the cross is not permitted in the rooms of the town hall, then there should not be special treatment for Muslims,” said AfD state parliament representative Thomas Jung. “The mayor deserves respect and not scolding for her uncomfortable decision,” he said. Wearing a headscarf to work, especially in legal or public sector work, has been hotly debated in recent years across G e r m a n y. G e r m a n y ’s Constitutional Court ruled last year that blanket bans on teachers wearing headscarves were “constitutionally limiting”. A young lawyer in Bavaria won a victory at the end of June when the court sided with her that she would be able to wear a headscarf while performing legal duties. The judge stated that there was no legal grounds for denying her religious and educational freedom. However, more recently two major judges associations have said that they are in favour of banning headscarves in court.
Vietnamese woman cuts off limbs for insurance payout
HANOI A Vietnamese woman paid a friend to cut off her hand and foot in a bid to claim a handsome insurance payout, state-run media reported Thursday. The woman, identified only as L. T. N., checked into a Hanoi hospital in May with one third of her left foot and one third of her left hand severed, but doctors told her they could not reattach the limbs. She later told police she was struck by a train as she walked on the tracks and was rescued by her friend Doan Van D., according to Tuoi Tre’s English edition. The 30-year-old submitted a claim to her insurance company for 3.5 billion dong ($157,000), a huge sum in Vietnam where the average annual income is $2,100. But authorities smelled a fraud. “N. hired D. to cut her hand and foot, then continued to have him report false information to the police,” said Bac Tu Liem police chief Nguyen Thanh Tung said,
according to the newspaper. Hanoi police declined to comment to AFP about the case, but reports said the woman offered her friend around $2,000 to perform the bloody deed. “The greatest shame is that N., instead of claiming the money, has suffered a huge loss by losing both her hand and foot,” Tung was quoted as saying. The woman is being treated for the wounds, the newspaper added, and police are looking into whether she should be charged with conspiracy to steal assets. “Her case sends a warning that people should not attempt insurance fraud at the expense of their own health,” said Tung, adding it was the first case of the kind he had ever seen in Vietnam. It was not clear if D. was promised a cut of the insurance payout before the scheme unravelled.
Turkey allows policewomen to wear Islamic headscarf Toronto North America’s most historic gurdwara suffered considerable damage due to a fire that erupted within its premises early on Friday. The Gurdwara Sahib in Vancouver is the successor to the first-ever Sikh temple in the country, and possibly North America, which was constructed in 1908. The new building, that replaced the original temple in 1970, was damaged in the fire that appears to have started on its second floor. Kashmir Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary of the Khalsa Diwan Society that runs the gurdwara, told the Hindustan Times that the “temple will be closed for at least two months”. Dale Booth, Assistant Chief of the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services said the cause of the conflagration was “still being investigated.” The fire started at around 2 am and there were no reports of injuries, but Booth said it took “a couple of hours” to bring it under control because of
the design of the building, as its cement-style structure retained heat. Much history is attached to this gurdwara, which is also known as the Ross Street Gurdwara due to its location. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vancouver during his Canada trip in April 2015, this gurdwara figured on the schedule. He visited it along with then Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Dhaliwal said religious programmes will continue at the location but will move to a smaller adjacent building. “We have another facility on other side, and we are planning to put tents in the parking lot,” he said. There’s been extensive fire and water damage to the main building, one that was renovated just last year. The cause will be established once the fire department completes its investigation. “We don’t know; there may have been an electric spark somewhere,” Dhaliwal said.
Istanbul Turkey has for the first time allowed policewomen to wear the Islamic headscarf as part of their uniform, according to a ruling published in the official gazette Saturday.Women serving in the police force “will be able to cover their heads” under their caps or berets so long as the headscarf is “the same colour as the uniform and without pattern”, said the ruling published in the official gazette.Rulings published in the official gazette come into force immediately. The ruling Islamic-rooted Justice and
Development Party (AKP) has long pressed for the removal of restrictions on women wearing the headscarf in the officially secular state.Turkey lifted a ban on the wearing of the Muslim headscarf, known as the hijab, on university campuses in 2010.It allowed female students to wear the headscarf in state institutions from 2013 and in high school in 2014.Erdogan’s critics have long accused the president of eating away at the secular pillars of modern Turkey as set up by its founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk when he established the Turkish
republic in 1923. But progovernment media pointed out that several Western states have already granted female officers permission to wear the headscarf.Police in Scotland this month allowed women to wear the headscarf while on duty, following a lead set by their counterparts in London over a decade ago.Hoping to boost recruiting of Muslim women, the Canadian government this week said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police would allow its officers to wear hijabs as part of their uniforms.

How technology killed Pakistan’s historic red light district LAHORE Pakistan’s oldest red light district was for centuries a hub of traditional erotic dancers, musicians and prostitutes Pigalle with a Mughal twist, deep in the heart of vibrant Lahore. But as an e-commerce boom revolutionises how Pakistanis conduct the world’s oldest profession, locals say the historic Heera Mandi district is under threat. Balconies where beautiful women once stood are now empty, while rust eats away at the locked doors of vacant rooms. The only stubborn holdouts are shops selling instruments that once facilitated the aperitifs of music and dance. Men now can book a rendezvous online through escort websites or even directly with women over social media, instead of searching out streetside solicitation. With location rendered meaningless, prostitutes like Reema Kanwal who says the business “runs in my blood” - have abandoned Heera Mandi. The district, whose name translates as “Diamond Market”, is close to the echoing, centuries-old Badshahi Mosque. During the Mughal era, the great Islamic empire that ruled most of India and Pakistan in the 15th and 16th centuries, Heera Mandi
was a centre for mujra, traditional singing and dancing performed for the elites. The wealthy even sent their sons to the salons of tawaifs, highclass courtesans that have been likened to Japanese geishas, to study etiquette. Later, when the British came, distinctions between courtesan or mujra dancer and prostitute were blurred. Dance and sex became intertwined, and Heera Mandi began its long slide into sordidness - but even so, Reema remembers “glorious” days. Reema’s mother and grandmother were also prostitutes, making her part of Heera Mandi’s generations of women who danced and pleased men in the market. “People used to respect the prostitutes of Heera Mandi, we were called artists,” she says but all has changed over the last decade. “Now we don’t have any honour.” She blames the loss on a rush of girls without her family background taking up the profession who have not been taught “how to treat people” the way she has. Such girls, she says, need nothing to market themselves but a mobile phone, with which they can advertise on Facebook
3 dead and 1 injured in Toronto, police suspect crossbow used
Toronto Three people were killed in what Canadian police on Thursday called a homicide that may have involved a crossbow. Officers arrived at a home in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough and found two people without vital signs. A third person was found with significant injuries and taken to a hospital. Police said all three people two men and a woman were later pronounced dead. A fourth person, a 35-year-old man, was also injured. Constable David Hopkinson said all three victims had what appeared to be crossbow wounds and a crossbow was found on the floor nearby. Constable Jennifer Sidhu says there were other “things” found in the area that could have been used in the incident. She declined to elaborate.
Police said a suspect is in custody but that it’s very early in the investigation. Sadiya Haque, who lives nearby, said she was surprised this happened in her usually tranquil neighbourhood, adding that most of the people who live on that street are seniors. Unlike guns, buying a crossbow does not require a license in Canada. In December 2010, a man fired a bolt into his father’s back at a Toronto public library branch in another crossbow incident that captured the city’s attention. In that case, Zhou Fang then crushed his 52-yearold father’s skull with a hammer. Fang was initially charged with first-degree murder but the prosecution accepted a plea of second-degree murder after considering that he was the victim of long-term abuse at the hands of his father.

even in Dubai and Singapore. In a Muslim country where prostitution is banned and sex outside marriage is criminalised, one website says it caters to roughly 50,000 customers. With the old traditions falling by the wayside, girls also no longer need an entourage of musicians and teachers, say the owners of the music shops that are the final remnants of old Heera Mandi. The intricate mujra dancing that was such a foundation of the red light district required years of
they plug a cable and play the music,” laments Soan Ali, one of the music shop owners. Like Reema, Ali’s family has also been in Heera Mandi for generations, and he proudly recalled his father’s “hospitality” as he attempted to lure clients for his mother. He takes a deep breath. “We are having a lot of difficulties,” he admits. “Whoever is in this field is going through hard days.” For those who have migrated beyond Heera Mandi, however,
the future is bright. Mehak, who declined to give her full name, is a cosmetic surgeon by profession, a feminist by ideology, and by night one of Pakistan’s most elite madams. Seven sleek Persian cats prowl among the expensive wooden furniture of her home, which doubles as a brothel for upperclass Pakistanis in a wealthy residential neighbourhood of Lahore.Mehak, who is in her mid50s, says she recruits most of her girls through elite parties but adds “this online thing has really changed the business”. “A girl no longer needs a pimp to market her, she has Facebook, Twitter,” she says. “Heera Mandi is no more... even if a girl is from Heera Mandi she would never reveal it because the client would never risk sexually transmitted diseases and the bad image associated,” she added.Outside of the Diamond Market, she says, business is good.“Medical students and MBAs have the highest rates, they get a hundred thousand (rupees, or $1,000) for one night,” she says. Now she plans to expand and offer male prostitutes.“Girls from the elite class come to me and beg for boys,” she says.“They say they are ready to pay, but they need strong boys.”
Despite curbs, skilled Indians get most UK work visas London Indian professionals were granted the largest number of skilled work visas in the year up to June 2016, reflecting continued demand for their skills mainly in the IT, medicine, engineering and services sectors, according to official figures released on Thursday. Indian citizens accounted for 57% of total skilled work visas granted (53,548 of 93,935), with US nationals the next largest nationality group (10,019 or 11% of the total), the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in its August quarterly report. UK visa terms have been tightened in recent years, but another indication of Indians taking up new jobs in Britain was the list of citizens of non-EU countries applying for mandatory National Insurance Numbers Indians topped it with 34,000 issued to them. ONS figures also revealed Poland, with an estimated 831,000 people born in the EU country, overtook India as the country of origin of most non-UK born population in Britain. So far, India and Ireland have traditionally been the sources of the UK’s largest foreign-born groups. Indian students continued to give
Britain the miss, with the number of student visas issued during the year to June 2016 being 10,664. Once one of the topmost source countries for students, India is now third on the list, after China and the US. “There was a statistically significant decline in the number of non-EU citizens migrating to the UK to study, from 134,000 in the previous year to 111,000. Of the 111,000, 72% were citizens of Asian countries, though there was a statistically significant decline in citizens of South Asia, with the number coming to study having almost halved,” the ONS said. With net migration remaining at more than 300,000, the figures continued to challenge the Conservative government, which is committed to reducing the figure to tens of thousands from hundreds of thousands. Nicola White of the ONS said: “Net migration remains at record
levels although the recent trend is broadly flat. The influx of Romanians and Bulgarians has also reached a new high, although that’s offset by falls in non-EU immigration and from other central and eastern European countries. “It’s important to remember that these figures only go up to the end of March and do not cover the period following the UK’s vote to leave the European Union,” she said.

Differenceof opinion Dhoni and Brathwaite offerconflicting views on outfield
INDIA captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and West Indies skipper Carlos Brathwaite differed in their opinion about the quality of the ground at Central Broward Regional Park in Florida after the second T20 International was called off due to a wet outfield. After dismissing West Indies for 143, India were 15 for no loss in two
overs when a 15-minute thunderstorm left huge puddles on some section of the field, including the bowler’s run-up at the pavilion end of the ground, forcing the officials to call off the match. “There were about two or three (areas of concern). Looking from the pavilion, the runups on that side and just beside the sponsor’s (painted ad
on field) plus probably midon and then there was a little patch on the (west) side looking from the pavilion again,” Brathwaite said. “So in my opinion it was unsafe, and even if the run-ups were good and a guy hits a ball in the outfield in a fast-paced T20 game and he chases behind it and pulls something, that could be
SEEKING HONOUR FOR THE LEGEND
New Delhi FORMER greats revived the longstanding demand for Bharat Ratna to late hockey legend Dhyan Chand with some saying the wizard should have been given the honour ahead of cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar. Former captains Ajit Pal Singh,
Zafar Iqbal, Dilip Tirkey and Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok Kumar gathered here at Jantar Mantar in the hope that the government would fulfill their demand and confer the Bharat Ratna to the legend who guided India to Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.
“We have all gathered here in the hope that dada Dhyan Chand gets the honour which is long overdue. But we can only hope that he gets it. It is the political will that matters. He should get it as he is most deserving for the recognition,” Iqbal said.
the end of a guy’s career. So not only will we want to play, we want the facilities and the atmosphere to be as safe for everyone’s career as possible. In my opinion, I don’t think it was and the umpires also made that decision as well.” However, Dhoni said he has played in worse conditions during his career, citing the example of 2011 tour of England. “What the umpires told us, there was not adequate equipment over here and the condition of it was quite bad, so because the conditions wouldn’t improve we won’t be able to play a game,” Dhoni said. “That’s a call that the match officials have to make and as far as I’ve played close to 10 years of international cricket and frankly I’ve played under worse off conditions. If I remember in 2011, the whole ODI series that we played in England, it was
literally played under the rain. I feel definitely the conditions ... ultimately the umpires decide so they decide you play, we play. If they say okay it was unfit for play, it was unfit for play. “It was on this (west) side where me and Bravo were standing but it was far away from all the run-ups of the bowlers. There is no Shoaib Akhtar in their team so I don’t think it was a big concern.” The second T20I also had a 40- minute delayed start in the morning and Brathwaite said: “We were always working against time especially with the 40minute delay beforehand. It was always difficult to get the ground in readiness for the time that was told to be cut off, so that was a major problem. The equipment that obviously will be had in years to come, because of the fantastic infrastructure that’s
already in place, will then eliminate stuff like this from happening in the future.” The 28-year-old from Barbados, however, exuded optimism of returning to USA to play matches in future. “The infrastructure, the facility, we came three or four days ago and there was nothing going up and today they are picking it back down,” Brathwaite said. “So they had stands built in no time, no injuries so obviously they were safe enough, and the outfield, barring the rain was perfect, lightning quick. The pitch was fantastic. It didn’t change too much over the course of yesterday and today, that’s 40, 62 overs odd, so that’s the basis of something positive. Now just little tweaks and little stuff to go into the actual infrastructure continuing what is already there, I can see a big future ahead.”
BCCI exempts Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals from paying annual IPL franchise fee New Delhi The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly exempted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) from paying the annual Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise fee during their suspension period, between 2016 and 2017. According to ESPNcricinfo, the Indian cricket board made the made the decision during its most recent working committee meeting in Delhi. Beside the exemption of annual franchise fees, BCCI will also return first installment of the fee paid by the franchises., it reported. The report further quoted a CSK official, claiming that both the suspended
franchises have now withdrawn legal proceedings after the board opted to settle the matter out of court. “There is no need to pay the franchise fee when we are suspended,” the CSK official told ESPNcricinfo. “They will refund the franchise fee which we have paid so far [under protest]. We have already withdrawn the case from the Bombay High Court. “When they asked for the
full and final [instalment] of payment, we approached the court for a stay and then we invoked the arbitration clause. Arbitrators were also in favour [of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals], so they [BCCI] went for an out of court settlement.” Both the franchises were suspended for two years in July 2015, following the corruption scandal in IPL 2013.

EACH decade there is a new “It” girl who everyone wants to emulate, but it is Princess Diana who has been named the biggest style inspiration of all time. Le Tote, a fashion rental service, polled 2,000 Americans on the most exemplary styles and clothing items, asking them to name the most fashionable women of each time period dating all the way back to the early 1900s. Results were analysed by decade and saw Princess Diana receive the highest scores across all fashion eras proving that her timeless beauty will always be in style. Screen and stage actress Lillian Gish was one of cinema’s first leading ladies, so it is unsurprising that her ensembles made her a fashion icon in the 1910s. Meanwhile, famed designer Coco Chanel took the top spot in the 1920s for her unforgettable fashion sense. Legendary actress Katharine Hepburn, known for her fierce and lively personality, had the most iconic style of the 1930s beating out Bette Davis, one of the greatest Hollywood actresses in history. Classic Hollywood star Lauren Bacall, who was known for her singing voice and her sizzling looks, also had the most highly-coveted style in the ‘40s. Blonde icon Marilyn Monroe was the “It” girl of the 1950s. And while the sex symbol ruled the ‘50s, Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s timeless wardrobe got her voted as the most iconic woman of the following decade. Farrah Fawcett whose red swimsuit photo captured international attention stole the top spot in the ‘70s thanks to her all- American good looks. Princess Diana was ranked as having the most iconic style of the 1980s, closely followed by pop icon Madonna. In the 1990s, the “Rachel” hair cut

Health Marijuana compound Long traffic jams may may improve night vision increase risk of cancer!
Toronto Turning conventional wisdom on its head, researchers have found that cannabinoids, the active agent in marijuana, may improve low-light vision of vertebrates by sensitising retinal cells. The experiment was conducted in tadpoles and it is too early to say if cannabinoids have the same effect on human vision, but there is anecdotal evidence in scientific literature of cannabis ingestion improving night vision of Moroccan fishermen, the study pointed out. “Our work provides an exciting potential mechanism for cannabinoid regulation of neuronal firing, but it will obviously be important to
confirm that similar mechanisms are also at play in the eyes of mammals,” said the paper’s senior author Ed Ruthazer, Professor at Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University in Canada. The researchers used a variety of methods to test how tadpoles react to visual stimuli when they have been exposed to increased levels of exogenous or endogenous cannabinoids. They found that, contrary to what they expected, activating cannabinoid signaling in tadpoles actually increased the activity in their retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which are responsible for transmitting information about light detection from
the eye to the brain. Previous studies found that cannabinoids typically work to reduce neurotransmission, not increase it. “Initially you distrust yourself when you see something that goes against widely held ideas, but we tried the experiment so many times, using diverse techniques, and it was a consistent result,” Ruthazer said. What the researchers found is that one class of cannabinoid receptor, known as CB1R, plays a role in the suppression of chloride transport into the retinal cells. When the receptor is activated, chloride levels are reduced, which hyperpolarises the cell, making it able to fire at higher frequencies when stimulated. For the tadpoles, this meant they were able to detect dimmer objects in low light than when they had not been exposed to increased levels of cannabinoids. The findings were published in the journal eLife.
Are you often stuck at traffic jam? Well, a new study has revealed that long traffic jams causes exposure to toxic fumes and may increases the risk of developing the deadly disease cancer. As per World Health Organization (WHO), exposure to outdoor air pollution is among the top ten health risks faced by humans and is especially pronounced in urban concentrations. WHO on October, 2013 had classified that outdoor air pollution as being carcinogenic to humans. Researchers said the findings showed that when vehicles stop at red lights, they go through different driving cycles such as idling, acceleration and deceleration and emission of toxic fumes. These emissions take more time to disperse, especially in built-up areas and end up accumulating in the air at traffic signals. Thus, the people sitting inside cars, with closed windows but with fans
switched on, can be at an increased risk of exposure to the outdoor pollutants, the researchers said. Switching on the fan sucks the dirty air from outside to inside the vehicle, resulting in an accumulation of pollutants in the car. However, it may be relatively safe to put fans onto the setting where they re-circulate air within the car without drawing polluted air in from outside, the study stated. “Where possible and with weather conditions allowing, it is one of the best ways to limit your exposure by keeping windows shut, fans turned off and to try and increase the distance between you and the car in front while in traffic jams or stationary
at traffic lights,” said Prashant Kumar from the University of Surrey. “If the fan or heater needs to be on, the best setting would be to have the air re-circulating within the car without drawing in air from outdoors,” Kumar added. Previous studies have shown that drivers stuck at traffic lights were exposed up to 29 times more harmful pollution particles than those driving in free flowing traffic. The new research, published in the journal Environmental Science: Processes and Impacts, has found that pedestrians are also exposed to increased air pollution around traffic signals.
Diabetes drug may help prevent heart diseases London A new study has revealed that diabetes drug may help prevent the risk of developing heart diseases. The drug which is commonly prescribed for Type 2 diabetes patients can also inhibit or delay heart disease in individuals with Type 1 diabetes. Heart disease is one of the leading cause of illness in diabetic patients, accounting for more than half of all fatalities. Metformin is an inexpensive treatment that is often used for Type 2 diabetes to lower blood
sugar levels by reducing glucose production in the liver. Researchers said that the drug may also be used to lower Type 1 diabetic patients’ risk of developing this complication, the researchers said. “Our research is an exciting step forward as it may have positive clinical implications for patients with increased risk of cardiovascular disease by improving their treatment options,” said Jolanta Weaver, Senior Lecturer at the Newcastle University in Britain. The findings of the clinical trial revealed that stem cells of patients who took
metformin were able to promote the repair of the blood vessels and there
by increasing a repair mechanism created by vascular stem cells
was an improvement in how vascular stem cells worked. “Metformin could routinely be used by patients with Type 1 diabetes to help lower their chances of developing heart disease,
released from the bone marrow,” Weaver added. Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong autoimmune condition that develops when the pancreas does not produce any insulin, causing a person’s blood
sugar level to become too high. For the study, the team examined a group of 23 people aged 19-64 who had Type 1 diabetes for up to 23 years but, had no evidence of heart disease. Patients were given metformin at a dose they could tolerate, between one to three tablets a day, for eight weeks. Participants were advised to adjust their insulin to keep blood glucose levels safe. The participants were matched with nine patients within the same age bracket who took standard insulin treatment and 23 healthy nondiabetic people aged 2064. “The study showed that
all our patients in the study had their insulin doses reduced after taking metformin and have not suffered any serious adverse effect,” Weaver said. Patients with Type 1 diabetes may wish to consider discussing with their physicians the possibility of adding metformin, even at a very low dose, to the insulin that they are taking However, care must to be taken to adjust insulin dose to prevent too low glucose levels, the researchers suggested, in the paper published in the journal Cardiovascular Diabetology.

Using Facebook, Twitter may cut BP, diabetes in elderly New York Surprised to see your grandparents making friends on Facebook, chatting online or using instant messaging services on smartphones? If yes, take heart, as indulging in social media could reduce loneliness as well as chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes in older adults. It is because, social media technology like emails, Twitter, Skype has the potential to cultivate successful relationships among older adults, the reseachers said. “Each of the links between social technology use and physical and psychological health was mediated by
reduced loneliness,” said William Chopik, Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, in the US. The study also found that participants active on social media platforms were generally more satisfied with life and had fewer depressive symptoms as well as chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. More than 95 per cent of the elderly participants in the study, said they were either “somewhat” or “very”
satisfied with technology, while 72 per cent said they were not opposed to learning new technologies. “Older adults think the benefits of social technology greatly outweigh the costs and challenges of technology,” Chopik added. Previous research on technology use across the life span had focused on the digital divide or the disparities between younger and older adults painting a rather bleak picture of seniors’ ability
and motivation to adapt to a changing technological landscape. However, the new study challenge this interpretation. “Despite the attention that the digital divide has garnered in recent years, a large proportion of older adults use technology to maintain their social networks and make their lives easier,” Chopik said, adding, “in fact, there may be portions of the older population that use technology as often as younger adults.” For the study, the team examined the benefits of using technology for social connection among older adults in 591 participants with an average age of 68. The findings are published online in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking.
This is what childhood obesity can do to your child’s health now, later!
New Delhi Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition in which a child is significantly overweight for his/her age and height. Childhood obesity has become a common health threat among children. As per the American Heart Association, today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Lifestyle, genetic and hormonal issues are the main factors that contribute to childhood obesity. Obesity does not
only affect your child’s physical health, but also have adverse effects on their social and emotional well-being. Here are some health conditions associated with childhood obesityChildren who are obese have an increased risk of * High cholesterol and high blood pressure, which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. * Breathing problems such as asthma, obstructive sleep apnea. * Bone and joint problems. * Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. * Fatty liver disease, gallstones, and gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn) * Obesity as adults. * Social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem. * Depression, behavioral issues, and learning problems in school.
Protein that helps Combination of diet and exercise may help prevent heart problems breakdown of fat identified
New York A new study has found that a balanced combination of diet and exercise may help prevent heart disease for people suffering from obesity. The findings has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and states that a combination of healthy eating and exercise is the preferred roadmap to a healthy heart. Edward Weiss, Associate Professor at Saint Louis University says, “For men and women with excess body weight, modest weight loss provides powerful protection against cardiovascular disease, regardless of whether weight loss is achieved by using exercise, a healthy low-calorie diet, or both “.
Weiss and his team for the research, divided 52 overweight, middle-aged men and women into three groups those who dieted, exercised, and did both and instructed to lose about seven per cent of their body weight during a 12-14 week period. Those who exclusively dieted or exercised were told to decrease their food intake by 20 per cent or increase their activity levels by 20 per cent. Those who did both were told to eat 10 per cent less and exercise 10 per cent more. The researchers analysed how the changes affected indicators of cardiovascular health, such as blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels. They found that the
three strategies were equally effective in improving cardiovascular health and doing one of these activities was not that effective. The study also suggested that diet, exercise and both were expected to reduce a person’s lifetime risk of developing cardiovascular disease 10 per cent from 46 per cent to 36 per cent. “Because our previous research and that of others indicates that exercise and diet each provide their own unique health benefits beyond those that were evaluated in the current study, it is important to recognize that both diet and exercise are important for health and longevity,” Weiss added.
New York Researchers have found that a protein often located on the surface of fat droplets within cells and especially abundant in the muscles of endurance athletes can kick-off the more efficient and healthful breakdown of fat. The findings could have significant implications for development of new ways to treat obesity and Type2 diabetes, said senior author of the study Perry Bickel, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre in the US. The study, published online in the journal Nature Communications, reports a new role for the protein, Perilipin 5, in the cell nucleus as a regulator of fat metabolism. In obese people and rodents, excess fat can accumulate in tissues not specialised for fat storage, such as skeletal muscle, the heart, and liver. This buildup can lead to dysfunction of those tissues, Bickel said. Trying to break down large amounts of fat can overload the body’s metabolic system, swamping the tiny cellular mitochondria whose job is to turn fat into fuel for work or heat, he explained.
“If you overload the factory with fuel, then it does not work well,” Bickel added. The cells are then left with a brew of partially processed fats that can be toxic to the mitochondria and lead to the insulin resistance seen in Type-2 diabetes, he said. Endurance athletes - who paradoxically accumulate at least as much fat in their muscle cells as do obese, insulin-resistant people have been found to have higher levels of Perilipin 5, and the new findings may explain why such athletes are able to exploit the increased stored fat for fuelling exercise while avoiding the toxicity of increased muscle fat. In experiments with cultured cells and mice, the research team found that when cells are
stimulated to release fat stored in fat droplets, Perilipin 5 can leave the surface of those droplets and move to the cell’s nucleus, where it works with another protein to encourage the creation of additional — and more efficient — mitochondria. In this way, Perilipin 5, “helps match mitochondrial capacity to burn fat with the fat load in the cell,” Bickel said.
