Sally leads ISIS’s all-woman squad
Sally Jones, the British woman who fled to ISIS-held territory with her young son, is training foreign fighters to execute attacks in English-speaking countries, it is claimed. Jones, a former punk rocker, has become one of the world’s most wanted female terrorists after leaving Kent in 2013 to marry late ISIS fighter Junaid Hussain. In a new development, she has been entrusted with leading the secretive female wing of the Anwar al-Awlaki battalion, which is composed of Englishspeaking fighters, sources told the Daily Telegraph. The unit is tasked with planning and carrying out attacks in English-speaking countries and teaches women to use weapons, fight and carry out suicide missions. A Syrian ISIS defector, living near Gaziantep, said: “ISIS respects her because she is the widow of Junaid, who was very important to the group. They want to send a message to their important fighters that they will respect their families and guarantee a good life for them after their death. “Umm Hussain is also influential in her own right. She was the reason ISIS was able to recruit a lot of Western girls to Raqqa: it’s not easy to convince a Christian, rock girl
to become an extremist.” It is believed that Jones, 47, recruited dozens of women to ISIS via social media before her accounts were shut down. She routinely encouraged followers to carry out attacks against the West, while defending the group’s beheadings and vowing to do the same. There has been widespread concern that her 11- year-old son Joe, known as JoJo, has been desensitised to violence amid several reports that he has appeared in propaganda videos. An activist also claimed that Joe was being lined up to replace British-born executioner Mohammed Emwazi, known as ‘Jihadi John’. The activist added that Miss Jones has already enrolled Joe at a camp for boys which teaches children ISIS’s interpretation of Sharia as well as to use weapons so they can one day join fighters on the battlefield. Jones’ husband was killed by an American
drone in 2015 and it is believed that she receives a monthly salary from ISIS of £520, plus a bonus of more than £200 every couple of months for being the widow of a ‘shahid’ or martyr. According to one activist she is yet to remarry because ‘she is considered old and ISIS fighters prefer young girls’. Last week, French police foiled an attack in central Paris, which they claimed was planned by Europe’s first allfemale ISIS cell. Led by 19-year-old Ines Madani, three women were arrested after a car filled with gas cylinders was found near the Nortre Dame cathedral. Miss Madani had been stopped by intelligence services on various occasion from trying to travel to Syria. Prosecutor Francois Molins said that the cell was being guided by ISIS in Syria which ‘intends to make women into fighters’, although it is not yet clear if there is a direct link with Miss Jones.
Al-Qaeda threatens thousands of 9/11 AL QAEDA’S leader threatened to repeat the 9/11 attacks ‘thousands of times’ while terror supporters praised the events in sickening online tributes. Terror chief Ayman alZawahiri posted a video on YouTube on Thursday marking the 15th anniversary of the assault that claimed 2,977 lives. Addressing the United States, Zawahiri blamed 9/11 on ‘your crimes against us’. He said that if these continue, 9/11 ‘will be repeated thousands of times’. On
September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were struck by hijacked aircraft, claiming 2,753 lives. Further deadly attacks that day were carried out against the Pentagon and on a third commercial aircraft that crashed in rural Pennsylvania. In the video, Zawahiri cited Washington’s policies towards Arab and Muslim countries. He mentioned its ‘occupation’ of lands in their countries, and support for their ‘criminal and corrupt’ governments. The United States has become hardened against large-scale plots such as 9/11 but remains vulnerable to small and homegrown attacks, American officials say. The 9/11 attacks spawned what President George Bush called the ‘war on terror’, which initially focused on AlQaeda and the Taliban. It has since targeted the Islamic State group which has seized territory in Syria, Iraq and Libya. Zawahiri also urged jihadists to unite. He asked African Americans to convert to Islam to ‘save’ them from American laws, which he said are controlled by ‘the white majority’.
African dictator who ‘skins enemies, eats testicles’ HE IS THE fearsome Central African dictator who rules his country with an iron-fist and allegedly skins enemies alive and eats their testicles and livers. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is Africa’s longest serving leader having been in
power since 1979. He extended his rule in April when he was reelected with 93.7 per cent of the vote. The opposition claimed at least 200 of its members were barred from voting. He seized power from his tyrannic uncle three decades ago and had him executed by firing squad. The new president relaxed some of the restrictions of his predecessor such as a ban on the Catholic

Over the years ‘the torturer in chief’ has accumulated huge wealth while most Equatorial Guineas remain in crushing poverty, with little or no access to decent healthcare or education. The country has become subSaharan Africa’s thirdbiggest oil producer in recent years, but the wealth is not shared across the nation. Most shockingly, the 74-year-

QUEEN’S GUARD CAUGHT SNORTING WHITE POWDER OFF A
SWORD! THE Ministry of Defence has launched an investigation after one of the Queen’s guards was filmed allegedly snorting a line of white powder off a ceremonial sword while on duty inside St James’s Palace. The Coldstream Guards’ Major James Coleby was filmed allegedly sniffing the substance inside the Officers’ Mess during an alcohol-fuelled session last Monday evening. A 30 second video was taken by Lieutenant Charles McLean, 27, who later posted it on a messaging service for personnel by mistake. The Ministry of Defence has launched an investigation into what happened, and confirmed three soldiers would be probed. The clip, obtained by The Sun, starts with Captain Alex Ritchie, 27, hunched over the sword as he appears to chop up a substance with a plastic card. He then asks Major Coleby, 41: ‘How much? Two inches? You want two inches of that? If you get rid of that I’ll be mightily impressed.’ Major Coleby bends over the blade and allegedly snorts the substance while a woman with a southern accent shouts: ‘No, don’t do it, for the love of God!’ Leut McLean, Capt Ritchie and Major Coleby were all on guard duty at the time of the incident and will face a Ministry of Defence inquiry, the paper said. Major Coleby, who is an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, was the most senior member of staff on duty at the time, overseeing 15 men at St James’s Palace. The palace, located on Pall Mall, in central London, is home to Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice but they were not thought to be at home at the time. Capt Ritche’s father was once the commanding officer of both Prince William and Prince Harry. Colonel Richard Kemp, who led British troops in Afghanistan, said: ‘This behaviour is both highly worrying and acutely embarrassing for the British Army. Officers are there to set an example.’ A source said that drinking alcohol while on duty was not against the rules but if

New York HILLARY Clinton has called off plans to visit the West Coast on Monday and Tuesday following her ‘medical episode’ at the 9/11 memorial ceremony. Her doctor revealed that the 68year-old has pneumonia - hours after a video showed her collapsing into the arms of her Secret Service agents after being rushed from the memorial service at the World Trade Center. Dr Lisa R Bardack said Sunday evening that Clinton had become overheated and dehydrated at the event in lower Manhattan. Bardack said Clinton is now ‘recovering nicely’ at her home in Chappaqua, New York. The
Democratic nominee was scheduled to attend fundraisers on Monday and Tuesday in California, and tape an episode of Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show. Clinton is now holed up in her upstate New York home after a bystander recorded her losing her balance, slumping at the knees and being held up by her aides while waiting to get in a minivan. Her campaign had earlier blamed ‘overheating’ for the episode - which saw her rushed away from the ceremony at Ground Zero and back to Chelsea’s apartment. Her press pool was not informed for 90 minutes of her whereabouts or given an explanation for the abrupt departure. At the time the temperature was around 80
degrees and the humidity was low. Earlier on Sunday, Bardack said that Clinton ‘has been experiencing a cough related to allergies’. On Friday, during follow up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. Bardack said Clinton was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule. ‘While at this morning’s event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely.’ Clinton’s collapse
adds to growing fears for her health, which began mounting on Labor Day when she broke out in a coughing fit during a speech in Ohio. It now seems that cough has developed into pneumonia, according to Bardack’s statement. Katie Packer, a GOP strategist, told the Los Angeles Times that the incident will increase attention on Clinton and Trump’s health.

Former PM Cameron resigns from Parliament London BRITAIN’S former prime minister David Cameron said on Monday he was resigning from his seat in parliament to avoid becoming a distraction for his successor, ending his political career just weeks after he lost a referendum to stay in the European Union. Cameron who came to power in 2010 said he had told Prime Minister Theresa May of his decision to stop representing his constituency in Oxfordshire to make way for someone who could concentrate on the area in central England. “I’ve thought about this long and hard over the summer and I’ve decided the right thing to do is to stand down as the member of parliament for Witney” he said. “In my view with modern politics, with the circumstances of my resignation it isn’t really possible to be a proper backbench MP (lawmaker) as a former prime minister,” he adds.

UNRULY mobs took over the IT capital on Monday leading to violence, arson and looting after the Supreme Court directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water from Cauvery River to Tamil Nadu every day till September 20. Law and order collapsed completely in south Karnataka, especially Bengaluru, where more than 75 vehicles, including trucks and buses registered in Tamil Nadu, were set on fire. An unidentified man of around 25 years of age died and two others, identified as Chandramohan Singh (39) and Yogesh (22), were seriously injured when police opened fire at a mob, which tried to set a patrol vehicle on fire in Peenya in Bengaluru. In all, more than 200 people were rounded up for inciting violence. More than 40 buses belonging to KPN Travels were gutted when miscreants set fire to them at a private depot. As the fire spread to nearby houses, people vacated their homes. Police had to fire in the air and use tear gas shells to disperse mobs that had gathered at the depot to target Tamil Nadu-registered vehicles. Police also caned mobs at Girinagar, Peenya and Guttahalli. The worst affected was Mysuru Road where around 35 trucks were set on fire, destroying goods worth lakhs of rupees. Stock yards owned by Tamil merchants were also set on fire. Mobs set up road blockades in various parts of Bengaluru and burnt effigies of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Most educational institutions and IT companies had declared a holiday sensing trouble. Even
school buses were not spared. Prohibitory orders will continue till September 14. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) withdrew bus services by afternoon leaving thousands of commuters stranded. Private taxis and autorickshaws also remained off the
roads. In Mysuru and Mandya districts, thousands of farmers laid siege to KRS reservoir from where water is being released to Tamil Nadu. Trucks and private vehicles registered in Tamil Nadu were set on fire. Schools and colleges will remain closed till September 17 in Mandya district.

TURNING down Karnataka’s plea for keeping in abeyance the order on sharing Cauvery water, the Supreme Court modified it on Monday, directing the state to release 12,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu (3,000 cusecs less), per day till September 20. In a related case, it said citizens cannot become law unto themselves and asked executives to comply its orders in ‘letter and spirit as concept of deviancy and disobedience has no room’. It expressed dissatisfaction over the law and order situation that unfolded in the state.
Rajnath assures help to K’taka, TN UNION Home Minister Rajnath Singh (inset) called up chief ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and assured them all central assistance in handling the law and order situation in the two states. Singh spoke to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and reviewed the situation in Bengaluru and other parts of the state. Singh also called up Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa and enquired about the situation in Tamil Nadu.

AAP to brazen it out on charges against legislator
AAP leader accused of rape bid absconding
Somnath returns with bulldozer
New Delhi It was yet another day of high drama for Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi on Sunday. While an FIR was filed against controversial AAP legislator Somnath Bharti for breaking open an entry-gate at AIIMS with the help of a bulldozer, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia blamed PM Narendra Modi for a criminal complaint against its legislator Amanatullah Khan which was lodged by the wife of MLA’s brother-in-law. Entering into fresh trouble, the party strongly defended
MLA Khan and later rejected his resignation which he had tendered after sexual harassment charges were levelled against him, saying the controversy surrounding him is a family dispute which is being given political colour. Sisodia claimed that the party’s internal probe had found no wrongdoing on the part of the legislator and said the latter was being targeted as he was unearthing land scams in the Waqf board involving influential people. “We checked facts in the Amanatullah Khan matter. It is his family’s internal
matter. The dispute is within his brother-in-law’s family. It is being said that Khan’s brother-in-law and the latter’s wife had divorced. Amantullah is not even communicating with them,” Sisodia said while addressing a press conference on Sunday. Khan on Saturday tendered his resignation from the post of Delhi Waqf Board chairman and Haj Committee claiming he was being framed in false cases. He had also offered to resign as MLA and Political Affairs Committee
AAP MLA Devinder Sehrawat suspended
New Delhi CRACKING the whip on dissidents within, AAP on Monday suspended its MLA Devinder Sehrawat from the primary membership after he accused partymen in Punjab of exploiting women in return for tickets. Bijaswan MLA Devinder Sehrawat is suspended from the party, an AAP source said. The action comes after the party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal returned to Delhi wrapping up his fourday visit to poll-bound Punjab. The decision to suspend the MLA was taken by the disciplinary committee of the party’s Delhi unit. Last week, Sehrawat had written to Kejriwal over alleged exploitation of women by a few partymen in Punjab. In the letter, Sehrawat had
also criticised party leader Ashutosh who had sought to defend Sandeep Kumar, sacked as a Delhi minister over an objectionable CD, and alleged that a coterie was damaging AAP. Responding to the party’s decision to suspend him, Sehrawat tweeted, “Repeated reports of molestation of women and sexual abuse, ring master, Arvind Kejriwal obliging his lecherous cotrie & adding more such candidates.” Earlier in the day, he had dared AAP to expel him in another tweet. “If you have the courage, severe the ties and expel. With 67 MLAs you could not perform, you don’t have it in youSo Get out of the Way,” he had said. Earlier, Punjab AAP’s women’s wing had filed a complaint with the State Women Commission against
Sehrawat alleg ing he was defaming the women in the state. BJP will not want to contest with a demoralised cadre given that its performance in 2014 general elections (71 out of 80 seats) was impeccable. Bharti clarifies Meanwhile, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti, who has been booked for allegedly inciting a crowd to damage AIIMS’ fence, on Monday said the structure blocked the passage of vehicles and was razed with the help of PWD officials after the hospital authorities did not attend PWD meetings in this regard. “The bone of contention is a wall that blocks the passage of vehicular traffic from Gautam Nagar and nearby areas to Ring Road and AIIMS. It forces the residents to take a detour which, sometimes, takes around 40 minutes...This inhumane Berlin wall has to go,” he said. “The fence is not on AIIMS’ property. There is a 100 metrelong road between the hospital and the structure,” the MLA said. “I have done no wrong. We went to raze the wall along with PWD officials who brought a JCB.
member of the party. A case of sexual harassment has been registered against Khan in south-east Delhi’s Jamia Nagar Police station on a complaint by his relative. The complainant has also accused her husband of demanding dowry and of pressurising her to get intimate with the AAP legislator. Meanwhile, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti was booked for allegedly rioting inciting a crowd to damage the AIIMS’ fence and to misbehave with the hospital’s security personnel. “The chief security officer of AIIMS submitted a written complaint on September 9 at Gautam Nagar Nallah road stating that Bharti provoked the mob to damage the fence of the hospital with a JCB (a construction machine used to break structures or dig hard surface) so as to give access to unauthorised people inside AIIMS premises.
New Delhi THERE seems to be no end to the AAP’s misery in Punjab. After facing rebellion and allegations of bribery as well sexual exploitation of female ticket-seekers, one of its Punjab unit leaders is now evading arrest in an attempt to rape charge. Hardeep Singh, incharge of AAP’s student wing in Sangrur, is absconding after a minor Dalit girl accused him of attempting to rape her, police said. Singh is believed to be close to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal who had visited his village in February this year.
Some of the top AAP leaders also stayed at his home. By evening, Singh’s photos with top AAP leaders, including national convenor Kejriwal, were going viral on social media platform. Sangrur police said they have registered a case under IPC sections of 376, 511, 342, 354B and 8 (Protection of Children From Sexual Offence Act,2012) and were conducting raids at various places to arrest Singh. The accused runs a digital photo studio and communication centre in the village.

Delay in ordering cap on chikungunya tests creates confusion, allows pvt labs & hospitals a window to fix charges unilaterally

CITY LABS STINGVIRAL PATIENTS
New Delhi WITH Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government yet to notify its order on setting a price cap of ‘1,500 on realtime PCR laboratory test for chikungunya, private hospitals in the city are making good of the delay by charging as high as ‘4,000 for each case. A reality check by Mail Today team also found that confusion prevails among patients over the test price ceiling after a section of the media reported that the city government had fixed a price cap of ‘1500 for PCR chikungunya test, leading to heated arguments between patients and staff at several hospitals. “The capping on real-time PCR chikungunya test has not been approved by the government. We have made a draft of the proposal in which we have suggested to cap the price at Rs 1,500 but nothing has been approved from the government’s end,” Dr SM Raheja, additional director general of health services, Delhi government told MAIL TODAY. There are two tests to detect chikungunya: IgM serology and real-time PCR, (polymerase chain reaction). The Delhi government announced a cap of Rs 600 only on IgM serology while the order on PCR test price cap is yet to come. The PCR test,
which detects chikungunya at an early stage, is not yet available at any government hospital and private laboratories have been charging much in excess of the proposed cap of ‘1,500, Mail Today team found. Delhi has so far reported 560 cases of the vector-borne disease. The figure
the government. We have been paying whatever the hospitals are asking,” said Sudhakar Jain, a resident of Malviya Nagar. An order on PCR pricing is expected on Monday. “The order for capping on the PCR test will come on Monday. Till now, we only capped the price of IgM
was restricted to 64 in the year 2015. This unprecedented outbreak has caused panic and people have crowded private labs for tests. While a private lab in Green Park was charging ‘1500 for the test, another in Ansari Nagar demanded ‘4,000 for the same and SRL diagnostics units were charging ‘2,500. Max and Indraprastha Apollo hospital chains did not respond to the queries on test rates. The patients that Mail Today spoke to rued a lack of uniformity in test charges. “There should be some guidelines on the test rates by
serology test for chikungunya,” said Dr Tarun Seem, director general of health services (DGHS), Delhi government. Health officials requesting anonymity said Delhi government was squarely to be blamed for the confusion that prevailed over the price cap. In an order on August 30, the government announced a cap on the prices of IgM serology at ‘600. However, there was no mention about the capping on PCR test which can confirm chikungunya at an early stage. “When reports in the media appeared that there is a
price cap of ‘600 on chikungunya tests, it was received well. These reports also mentioned the capping on PCR test. But the government made no attempts to clarify it since the report presented it in favourable light,” said a health official about the confusion over the price cap. Meanwhile, the hospitals are hard put to deal with the growing panic. RML hospital spokesman Dr VK Sinha said the hospital was witnessing more than 300350 new fever patients in the department on a regular basis. According to the data provided by the hospital administration, 42 beds are occupied out of the 110 beds. “We allocated separate wards for the fever patients — one for dengue and chikungunya and another for fever patients. A total of 110 beds have been added to the existing strength,” said Dr Sinha. Chikungunya is a viral illness and its symptoms are similar to those of dengue, which include high-grade fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain and headache and joint swelling. It also causes rashes in patients but is not a threat like dengue in which there is a risk of bleeding due to abrupt fall in platelet count. Dengue is transmitted by several species
‘Bure din’ for Kapil Sharma POPULAR comedian Kapil Sharma’s tweet alleging that he was asked to pay bribe by a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official for constructing his office boomeranged as the Mumbai civic body turned around to accuse the TV star of violating building rules. The comedy star stirred huge political controversy as he tagged PM Narendra Modi in a sarcastic tweet saying: “ye hai aap ke ache din? (Are these your good days?). Before tagging the PM, the star, who hosts the immensely popular The Kapil Sharma Show, complained that he was asked to pay a bribe despite paying `15 crore as income tax. “Paying 15cr income tax from last 5 years n still I have to pay 5 lacs to BMC office for making my office,”

he tweeted triggering a social media spectacle with star getting torned between those who hailed him for flagging corruption and the ones who trolled him for violating building laws. Kapil Sharma’s direct barb at the PM sparked a row with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis asking the TV star to name the officer. He even promised to punish the person. Shiv Sena’s youth wing chief Aadtiya Thackeray also sought action if the claims were found to be true. “Kapilbhai pls provide all info. Have directed MC, BMC to take strictest action. We will not spare the culprit,” tweeted Fadnavis. A full blown political controversy erupted as the opposition jumped onto the bandwagon and attacked the Modi government of hollow promises of delivering a corruption free administration. But the BMC later claimed that Sharma was served a notice in August to stop the illegal construction work of his office. The civic body in fact, is now considering booking Kapil Sharma under the stringent
Maharashtra Regional Town Planning (MRTP) Act, a non-bailable offence, for illegal construction at his bungalow in Andheri West. “We called him several times but he said he was very busy and could not meet. Then in May two BMC officers — Khan and Pawar – whom Kapil has accused of demanding bribe, met him at the Film City,” said an officer adding that Kapil Sharma was planning to use the residential premises for commercial use. The BMC officials also alleged that the civic body had received several complaints against the actor for illegal construction. A notice was sent to him on July 16. The officials said that the construction work was being stopped under section 354 A and when the notice was not responsded, the illegal structure was demolished on August 4. The BMC also questioned why the actor raised the issue two months later. The mention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name in the tweet angered many BJP leaders.

Ghanaian women look to drive stereotypes off the road ACCRA Faith Lawson carefully backs a large silver pick-up truck through cones placed on the red soil of a military
Landzo-Wene comes from a small town on the Volta River, where women traditionally bake bread or sell food and fabric at busy
camp in Ghana’s capital, Accra. As she checks her mirrors and slowly reverses, 14 young women standing in military formation look on.Two months ago, the 24year-old had never even gripped a steering wheel and was frightened by the very thought of driving. Now she hopes to become a professional driver and break into a maledominated vocation after completing a programme aimed at creating jobs and empowering women. Lawson is one of 15 being trained as a driver on a course run by Ghanaian charity Network of Women in Growth (NEWIG), which works to draw women into more lucrative professions. For eight weeks, the women learn the ins and outs of driving, from how to change a tyre to reading maps. Ultimately, they hope to take the wheel as chauffeurs or commercial drivers and in the process overturn rigid gender stereotypes in the west African nation.Fiawomorm
market stands. But at 21, she has a different dream. “I have been desiring to drive for so long and now the chance has come,” she said.”Now looking at it I see that what men can do, women can do - and do it better.”Mawusi Awity founded NEWIG in 2002 to help marginalised women break into the workforce, teaching them skills to make a living in areas such as textiles, beads or catering. There is also education on domestic violence and family planning. But this year Awity wanted to encourage women to get into betterpaid professions - usually those more associated with men.Encouraging women to drive would also be a service to society, said Awity.”Statistically women are less involved in accidents. Men are more offensive on the roads and women defensive,” she said. The Ghanaian army has partnered with the charity to make sure the new drivers operate on the
roads with military discipline.Clad in charcoal grey overalls embellished with pink accents, the students learn how to spot hazards on the road and train in first aid.Awity is proud to report that the fear the women once had of driving has been “broken” and the training has made them “more confident and assertive”.Ghana ranked 63 out of 145 countries on the World Economic Forum’s “Gender Gap Index” in 2015, with the country part of a group making “the largest absolute gains in senior roles”, including legislators, senior officials and management positions.According to the United Nations 2015 Human Development Report, women in Ghana work more than men but are paid less because they are more involved in the informal sector.Women’s estimated gross national income per capita was $3,200 (2,832 euros) in 2014, compared to men at $4,515 (3,995 euros).Soon, some of the qualified drivers may even join the ranks of Esenam Nyador, one of the few female taxi drivers operating in Accra.Nyador wanted to be a truck driver but for lack of training the 39-year-old decided to go into the taxi business. WELLINGTON New Zealand will fund a multi-million dollar programme aimed at getting more children in Pacific island countries to play sport, Prime Minister John Key said Sunday. The NZ$10 million (US$7.3 million), five-year initiative will initially focus on rugby and netball in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands and will involve some of New Zealand’s top sports stars.Key, who is in Micronesia attending the Pacific Islands Forum, said there was potential to include other sports and countries in the future.”We want to work with Pacific governments and local sports bodies to
promote active lifestyles and ensure young Pacific sportspeople have every opportunity to participate and make the most of their talents,” he said.”In New Zealand we have recognised that encouraging active lifestyles and promoting sport at a young age is an important part of addressing the rise of childhood obesity and associated heath issues.”This programme will help us support similar efforts underway in Pacific communities.”According to World Health Organisation data, Pacific nations are home to some of the globe’s most obese people.
British parliament should decamp for £3.9b repairs LONDON Britain’s lawmakers should move out of London’s iconic Houses of Parliament for six years while the crumbling building is renovated to avert a crisis, a parliamentary report said Thursday. Behind its neoGothic facades topped by the world-famous Big Ben tower, the mother of parliaments has been eroded by air pollution and is overrun with mice, prompting warnings that it may have to be permanently abandoned unless urgent renovations are carried out.Set up in July 2015, the Joint Committee on the Palace of Westminster recommended Thursday that MPs from the House of Commons move into the nearby Department of Health building, warning of the growing risk of a “catastrophic event.” The House of Lords - Britain’s upper chamber - should move to the less grandiose surroundings of the nearby Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, the committee said, recommending the move take place between 2022 and 2028. “The Palace of Westminster, a
masterpiece of Victorian and medieval architecture and engineering, faces an impending crisis which we cannot responsibly ignore,” said the report. “It

is impossible to say when this will happen, but there is a substantial and growing risk of... a catastrophic event, such as a major fire. “If both houses fully vacated the palace this would take the least time and would avoid disruption to parliament from construction works,” it concluded. If lawmakers were to move, it said the cost of renovations would be around £3.9 billion ($5.2 billion, 4.6 billion euros), compared with £6 billion if the work took place around parliamentarians. Many of the vast building’s roofs are prone to leaks,
frequently spotted scurrying around the members’ tea room, while MPs complain of cramped working areas and faulty heating.Work would also include including rewiring, and updating the Victorian facilities.House of Commons Speaker John Bercow warned that parliament could have to move for good within 20 years unless major renovations take place in the next decade. The Houses of Parliament, designed by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin, were completed in 1870 and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Scientists drill off Japan for sizzling life OSLO Scientists will start drilling off Japan this month to seek the hottest place where life can survive in a hellish uncharted realm deep below the seabed. The drilling under the Nankai Trough in the Pacific Ocean will be part of a project by 900 experts to map carbon underground, hoping for clues to everything from the origin of life on Earth to the formation of oil and gas. Previously, microbes have been found living at a torrid 121 degrees Celsius (249.8°F) around a volcanic vent on the seabed in the Pacific Ocean off the United States. Scientists will now drill into rocks where temperatures reach 130°C (266°F) in a two-month trip off southern Japan starting on Sept. 12, said Kai-Uwe Hinrichs, of the University of Bremen in Germany who led the scientific proposal for the mission. He reckoned life was likely to
exist at temperatures around a maximum 85°C to 90°C (176°F194°F) beneath the surface. He said there was probably less food in such rocks, heated by the molten core of the Earth, than near volcanoes on the seabed. “But we’ve been surprised in these systems before. I wouldn’t bet any money on it,” he told Reuters. Water in the Nankai Trough is 4.7 kilometres (2.92 miles) deep and the scientists will drill another 1.2 kms into the Earth. The researchers reckon it is easier to prevent contamination of samples on a drilling ship than on land. Scientists say that they are discovering vast amounts of carbon-based life in the little understood subterranean zone. Still, they reckon deep rocks are too disconnected from the surface to be exploited by humanity to soak up carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse
gas emitted by human activities. And the temperature limits of life are unclear. “My guess is that 121°C is not the highest temperature at which life can grow and replicate,” Derek Lovley, a U.S. scientist who helped identify Strain 121, the
Hajj goes high-tech: Now SMS to order a bloodless Eid sacrifice
Mina Thanks to computer technology and SMS messaging, Muslims at the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca were able to make their Eid al-Adha sacrifice without getting blood on their hands. The more than 1.8 million pilgrims from around the world participating in the hajj had the option of computerised coupons to order a sacrifice on the Muslim holidays marking the
end of the hajj - without even seeing the beast. Many among the world’s more than 1.5 billion Muslims themselves pick up a knife and kill sheep or other animals to mark the Al-Adha feast, Islam’s holiest. “If each pilgrim himself sacrificed a sheep, there wouldn’t be enough space,” said Rabie Saleh, a Sudanese in line at a Saudi post office at Mina’s

Jamarat Bridge, where pilgrims symbolically stoned the devil in the last major hajj rite. The Eid al-Adha ritual commemorates Prophet Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his son, before he was replaced by a lamb, and symbolises the believers’ submission to God. The meat is shared out, especially among the needy. The hajj to Islam’s holiest sites, housed in western Saudi Arabia, is one of the five pillars of the religion that capable Muslims must perform at least once. Over the centuries, when performing hajj meant an arduous desert journey, pilgrims themselves sacrificed animals before handing meat to the poor. “But now there are millions of pilgrims. If each sacrificed a sheep, that would take days and days,” said Mishal Qahtani, 33, a Saudi pilgrim.
microbe that can reproduce at 121°C. Lovley, of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst who is not involved in the Japanese project, told Reuters that it might be possible to adapt Strain 121 to higher temperatures and that other unknown life forms
may live in even hotter places. Guidelines for sterilising surgical instruments in hospitals often stipulate 121°C. Heat-loving microbes like Strain 121, however, would die of cold if exposed to a human body at 37°C.
Air China magazine apologises over ‘racist’ article
BEIJING The publisher of Chinese national carrier Air China’s in-flight magazine apologised Thursday for allegedly “racist” travel advice offered to passengers visiting London, as mainland social media users rushed to defend the controversial tips. The latest issue of “Wings of China” ran an article detailing safety tips to travellers based on the race and nationality of local residents.
“London is generally a safe place to travel, however precautions are needed when entering areas mainly populated by Indians, Pakistanis and black people,” the article said in English translation below a Chinese text, according to a photograph published by CNBC. “We advise tourists not to go out alone at night, and females always to be accompanied by another person when travelling,” it added.
14 dogs die in Canada kennel LONDON Counterculture and hippy life are served up in a visual and musical blend at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, where a new exhibition delves into the swinging sixties. “With this exhibition we explore the era-defining significance and impact of the late 1960s upon life today,” says Victoria Broackes, curator of the exhibition “You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-1970,” which opens on Saturday. “The years from 1966 to 1970 - just 1,826
days - undeniably shaped the world we’re living in today, from global civil rights, environmentalism, consumerism, to neoliberalist politics,” she adds. Sporting a headset picked up at the exhibition entrance, each visitor embarks on a journey through the destinations which defined the era. They include San Francisco’s HaightAshbury neighbourhood - the epicentre of the hippy movement - London’s Carnaby Street, and Woodstock Festival in upstate New York.

Australia charges man ‘inspired by IS’ for stabbing attack in Sydney Sydney A man “inspired by” the Islamic state group was on Sunday charged with committing an act of terror for a stabbing attack that Australian police called the “new
face of terrorism”. The alleged stabbing by the 22year-old in Sydney came two days after a teenage boy was charged with making threats at the Sydney Opera House, and both incidents followed an IS call to target high-profile Australian sites. The man, named in local media as Ihsas Khan, was charged with committing a terrorist act and attempted murder after the alleged attack on a 59-year-old man in the southwest Sydney suburb of Minto Saturday. “We know that this person has strong extremist beliefs inspired by ISIS (Islamic State),” New South Wales state police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn told reporters in Sydney, adding that investigators had seized a “large knife”. Federal Attorney-General
George Brandis said investigators established the alleged IS link after seizing material related to the militant group, without giving further details.
The stabbing left the victim, who police believe did not know his attacker, with serious wounds to his hands and body. He remains in hospital in a serious condition. Burn said that when police were called to a road in Minto where the victim was, the young man allegedly tried to stab officers through a window. “What made him actually act yesterday, we don’t know. But hopefully, our further investigations will uncover that. It was deliberate. It was violent,” she added. “There was clearly some planning and preparation... we will allege down the track that he was going to attack (police) also,” she said. Brandis told reporters in Brisbane Sunday that the victim could have died if locals had not rushed to helped him after he was stabbed, saying they “acted
heroically”. ‘Real’ threat The attacker -- who was refused bail after a court appearance Sunday -- was not believed to be connected to any terrorist groups known to police, Burn said, but stressed that the type of threat he posed was a new challenge to authorities. “This is the new face of terrorism. This is the new face of what we deal with,” Burn said. “There is an individual who, known to police for some matters, decides or for whatever reason, becomes inspired to act; they are able to get some basic capability and act.” The case is due to be heard again in a Sydney court Wednesday. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull last week said the threat of a terror attack in the nation was “real” after IS’ call to followers to target prominent Australian locations. He added Sunday it was not yet known if the Minto incident had been inspired by the IS call, but said there were no plans at this stage to raise the terror threat level, which is currently at “probable”.Officials had said they have stopped 10 terror attacks in Australia in the past two years. Canberra is set to table two new counter-terrorism bills in parliament this week. They involve the options of keeping high-risk jihadists in detention beyond the completion of their sentences, and lowering the age threshold to 14 for control orders that aim to prevent an attack by limiting a person’s activities.
This Indian was a mechanic but now he owns 22 apartments in Burj Khalifa
New Delhi An Indian mechanic-turnedbusinessman owns an incredible 22 apartments in the popular Burj Khalifa, a media report said today.George V Nereaparambil says he is not stopping at 22 and will continue to buy more if he gets a “good deal”. WILLING TO BUY MORE “If I get a good deal, I’ll buy more. I am a dreamer and I never stop dreaming,” he told Khaleej Times. The Kerala-born is believed to be one of the largest private owners within the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest structure. His stake in the property came about when a
relative teased him about the 828metre building. WHAT TRIGGERED THE PURCHASE? “A relative of mine jokingly told me: See this Burj Khalifa, you cannot enter it,” he said. After seeing an advertisement in a newspaper about an apartment for rent in the building in 2010, Nereaparambil rented the apartment the same day and started living in it from the next day. Now, six years on with 22 of the 900 apartments at perhaps the Gulf’s poshest address under his belt, he said five are rented, and as for the rest, he’s “waiting for the right tenant”, the
report quoted him as saying. In an incredible sounding rags-to-riches story, Nereaparambil realised there was huge scope for an air conditioning business in the hot climate of the desert after first touched down in Sharjah back in 1976. A DREAMER OF MINI EMPIRE Nereaparambil, who helped his father trade cash crops and made money from waste at the age of 11, then went about setting up the beginnings of his now mini empire, GEO Group of Companies.“People in my hometown used to trade cotton, but they’d throw away the cotton seeds.

UK radical preacher Anjem Choudary jailed for aiding IS
London Radical preacher Anjem Choudary and his aide Mohammed Mizanur Rehman were on Tuesday jailed for fiveand-a-half years each for inviting support for the Islamic State terror group.Choudary, 49, was earlier convicted in the high court of backing the group in an oath of allegiance published online. The judge described Choudary as calculating and dangerous. Choudary, of east London, and Rahman, 33, of north London, were convicted last month of inviting support for IS - an offence that violated section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000 - between 29 June 2014 and 6 March 2015. Security officials charged the
preacher and the proscribed organisations which he helped to run, such as al-Muhajiroun, for radicalising young men and women, including the killers of British soldier Lee Rigby in 2013. Passing sentence, Justice Holroyde said the pair “crossed the line between the legitimate expression of your own views and a criminal act. A significant proportion of those listening to your words would be impressionable persons looking to you for guidance on how to act.” He told Choudary he had failed to condemn “any aspect” of what IS was doing, adding: “In that way you indirectly encouraged violent terrorist activity.”
We were gangraped for ‘eating beef’, says Mewat woman
New Delhi Nearly two weeks after two women were allegedly gangraped in Mewat district of Haryana, one of them came out in the open on Sunday. The woman claimed that the attackers told her that they were being punished for eating beef. An NDTV report said that the victim narrated the incident in presence of activist Shabnam Hashmi in New Delhi. “They asked if we eat beef. We said that we don’t, but they said that was why (we were being punished),” the woman was quoted as saying. “The main motive seems to have been rape. The four arrested men are known troublemakers in the village and had been seen drinking the morning of the attack,” a cousin of the victims was also quoted as saying. THE INCIDENT On the intervening night of August 24-25, some people entered a house in Mewat, where a 20-year-old woman and her 14year old cousin was sexually assaulted by attackers inside their home. Their uncle and aunt were beaten to death the same
night.Police have arrested four accused in connection with the case. But, they were booked for rape and trespass. Charges of murder were added only after locals staged a protest in Mewat. YECHURY WRITES TO RAJNATH CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury raised this issue with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Yechury wrote a letter to Singh seeking his immediate intervention. In his letter, Yechury claimed that the attackers were members of local gau-rakshak dal. A CPI-M team had visited the village, where this incident took place. SITUATION IN MEWAT Mewat has been tensed for past several months with frequent incidents of cow vigilante groups attacking suspected cattle smugglers. A truck driver was beaten to death in June for allegedly carrying beef. Recently, police collected samples of biryani to ensure that beef was not used in the preparation of the dish. Cow slaughter is prohibited in Haryana and violators may attract jail term of upto ten years and a fine upto Rs five lakh.

Denying sex to spouse for a long time is mental cruelty, ground for divorce: High Court Putting an end to a nine-year-old marriage, the Delhi High Court
has reiterated that denying sex to the spouse for a long time, without sufficient reason, amounted to mental cruelty and is a ground for divorce. A division bench of Justice
Pradeep Nandarajog and Justice Pratibha Rani granted divorce to a man, while taking into consideration his contention that the marriage could not be consummated and she had visited his office and made false complaints against him to his boss, due to which he had to leave the job. “All these acts, individually as well cumulatively, amount to treating the husband with cruelty,” the bench said while upholding the decision of a Family Court dissolving the marriage finding it to be a “sexless marriage”. The family court on April 1 had dissolved the marriage on a plea by the husband. The woman had moved the high court against the decision but on Friday, it dismissed her appeal filed against the dissolution of marriage. More white nationalists on Twitter than IS backers
NEW YORK The number of white nationalists and Nazi sympathisers on Twitter has multiplied to more than 600% in last four years, outperforming the Islamic State group in everything from follower counts to number of daily tweets, a study has found.Researchers at George Washington University analysed 18 accounts belonging to major white nationalist groupssuch as the American Nazi Party and the National Socialist
Movement - mostly located in the US. The number of followers in these accounts increased from 3,500 in 2012 to 22,000 in 2016.The study noted that while IS stood out for its outreach and recruitment using Twitter, white nationalist groups have excelled in the medium. The report underscores the declining influence of IS on the platform after Twitter said it shut down 3,60,000 accounts for what they saw as promoting terrorism. According to the study , white nationalist users are “heavily invested” in Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s candidacy. But mentions of the real estate tycoon were second only to talk of “white genocide” - the belief that influx of non-white cultures and increasing diversity in the United States are fuelling extinction of the “white race”.
for long, without sufficient reason, amounted to mental cruelty to such spouse. The 46-year-old man stated before the court that they got married in November 2007 but his wife refused to indulge in sexual activities due to a medical problem. They went to Shimla for honeymoon in January next year and there also she did not allow the marriage to be consummated and threatened to raise alarm or jump from the balcony in case any attempt was made by the husband to touch her. After the failed honeymoon, they returned to Delhi and again she left for her parents’ home and returned after about three months, he said, adding that her behaviour towards his mother was also insulting and humiliating. WIFE’S DEFENCE In her defence, the woman had said that her husband and in-laws used to harass her with dowry demand. She said that her husband used to drink heavily and inflict cruelty on her body, mind and soul. Her husband used to take heavy doses of drugs for depression from which he has been suffering for over 10 years. She also alleged him of hiding about his earlier marriage and a daughter from the first wife.
Pokemon Go is blasphemous: Indian court
AHMEDABAD Pokemon Go is blasphemous and should be banned, an Indian court was told Wednesday, because it rewards religious vegetarians with eggs. Lawyer Nachiket Dave argued that the game offended the religious sensibilities of Hindus and Jains - some of whom do not eat meat or other animal products - by giving players virtual eggs, including in places of worship. “Those who succeed are rewarded with eggs. Offering eggs to people in temples, even in the virtual world, is highly objectionable and amounts to blasphemy,” Dave told AFP after the brief hearing at the court in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Many Hindus are vegetarian, among them Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while members of the Jain faith usually
follow a very strict vegan diet. Dave, who is acting on behalf of a private individual named Alay Dave, said the court would now ask the Gujarat and Indian governments as well as the San Francisco-based makers of Pokemon to respond to the claims. The global Pokemon Go craze has prompted a slew of complaints, with religious sites arguing that it is disrespectful to play there and some countries imposing a complete ban. The game was recently updated to remove the Hiroshima and Berlin Holocaust memorials as Pokemon landmarks. A Russian blogger has been charged with offending religious believers and inciting hatred after filming himself playing Pokemon Go in a church.
NRIs to diplomats: A history of ill treatment of domestic help New Delhi An Indian-American CEO of an IT consultancy firm has hit the international headlines – for all the wrong reasons. Himanshu Bhatia, the CEO of Rose International, stands accused of grossly underpaying her help and subjecting her to shocking cruelty, by making her sleep next to the dogs in the garage when she was unwell.Bhatia, who was named as one of the top 25 women business leaders by Fast Company web magazine in 2012, paid Sheela Ningwal, her domestic help, a fixed amount of $400, much lower than the minimum wage in the United States. The complaints, which are being investigated by the US labour department, also state that Ningwal’s passport was taken away and given to her only while travelling, and that she was threatened with firing multiple times. This is not the first time an Indian American has hit the spotlight over the treatment of their domestic help. The most high-profile case is that of Devyani Khobragade, India’s former deputy consul general in New York, who was indicted on the charges of underpaying her help in December 2013. The US Department of State investigated the issue based on the complaint by Khobragade’s help, Sangeeta Richard. A grand jury indicted Khobragade for visa fraud and
making false statements about the payment to the help. The incident led to a diplomatic face-off between India and the US
Indian diplomat in New York, was accused of misconduct and sexual harassment by his domestic help, Santosh
. In India, there was outrage at the fact that Khobragade was arrested from her daughter’s Manhattan school and stripsearched. The rights of the maid, who was also an Indian, hardly figured in this narrative. In 2015, India was left red-faced when the wife of Ravi Thapar, its high commissioner to New Zealand, was accused by one of her domestic staff of slapping him. Thapar washastily recalled. The complainant, who worked as a chef, alleged that Sharmila Thapar treated him like a “slave”. Thapar denied the allegations and maintained that he had returned to India to stay with his mother. A diplomatic crisis was averted because the staff member didn’t press charges, and only wanted to return to India. Back in 2011, Prabhu Dayal, an
Bhardwaj. Dayal continued to deny the charges and called them lies. The case was later dropped, after an agreement was negotiated through the ministry. A year before that, Neena Malhotra, a counsellor at the Indian consulate in New York, was accused by her maid, Shanti Gurung, of maltreatment.

Arvind Kejriwal accuses Badal family, Amarinder Singh of ‘looting’ Punjab New Delhi AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday mounted a no holds barred attack on the Badal family and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh, alleging that they have “looted” the state for their “vested interests”. “What have the Akalis and the Congress given to the people of Punjab? They have only looted the state for their vested interests. People should disassociate themselves with these parties. Otherwise, their children will never forgive them,” he said here after releasing his party’s ‘Kisan Manifesto’. Asserting that Punjab will “change” after the 2017 Assembly polls, Kejriwal, on the last day of his four-day tour of the state, told a rally that the future of Punjab was bright and it would show the direction to the entire world. He said the farmers of the state were once prosperous and accused the Badals and Amarinder of “grabbing” their land and “forcing” them to commit suicide in the last 15 years. “We (AAP) will not let them (the Badals and Amarinder) go scot free. I have pitched my tent in Punjab now and I will leave the state only after sending the Badals to jail,” said
Kejriwal. He also lashed out at state ministers Tota Singh, Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, Bikram Singh Majithia and Sukhbir Singh Badal. “After we form the government in Punjab, we will get cases lodged against them and send them to jail,” he said. The AAP supremo accused Tota Singh of “selling spurious pesticides” which forced cotton farmers to commit suicide, Kairon of “looting” foodgrains worth Rs 12,000 crore, Majithia of “being in the drugs business” and Sukhbir of “knowing it all”, adding that AAP will confiscate the land of these ministers and build schools and hospitals on them. “Three months back, I had announced that Majithia was in the drugs trade. He got a false case registered against me, thinking that he will be able to suppress me. But, I am not afraid of him,” said Kejriwal. “There are only four months left for the polls. I warn Majithia that either he gets me arrested or after the polls, I will get him arrested and send him to jail,” he said. Kejriwal alleged that whenever he said anything against the Badals, Amarinder threatened to throw him out of Punjab. “I wonder why can’t he (Amarinder) face the
Kejriwal’s MLA now questions AAP’s credibility
New Delhi In what may come as a major embarrassment for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Devendra Sehrawat today expressed his disappointment over the ongoing controversies and said party’s credibility is at the lowest level as of now. “Credibility of the party is at the lowest level amongst the common people. There will be no one to save this party,” he said. Sehrawat also avoided commenting on the sexual harassment case registered against his party colleague Amanatullah Khan. “The AAP MLA will put forth his position in this regard and the concerned agencies will carry out the investigation. I do not have any opinion on this,” said Sehrawat. A case of sexual harassment
has been registered against Amanatullah on a complaint by his sister-in-law, forcing him to quit as the city’s Waqf Board chairman. Amanatullah’s sister-in-law approached the Jamia Nagar police station alleging that he had put pressure on her to get into a physical relationship with him. A case under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the AAP MLA and the woman’s husband. The AAP MLA has so far claimed that the charges against him were baseless.
truth about the Badals?” he asked, adding that the state Congress chief behaved like “an advocate of the ruling family of Punjab”. “Congress, Akali Dal and BJP are together in the run-up to the polls,” he claimed, adding that after AAP forms the government in Punjab, the buses of the Badals will be impounded and handed over to the unemployed youth.Kejriwal claimed that after AAP forms the government in Punjab, the assets of chit fund companies, operating in the
state, will be confiscated to payback the farmers. The party will also withdraw the false cases lodged against the people at the behest of the Badals, he said. “It is sad that those who sell drugs are not booked but those who purchase them are arrested. We will arrest the sellers,” said the AAP supremo. Claiming that his party had a “zero tolerance” policy towards corruption, Kejriwal said, “AAP is the only party since Independence to send its ministers to jail after collecting proof of their indulgence
in corruption.”“We have suspended three of our ministers after getting proof. We will never compromise with corruption,” he added. The Delhi Chief Minister accused the ministers in the Badal cabinet of being “rowdy, goons and disreputable” and said, “A foul smell emanates from these ministers and their homes.” He also questioned the Congress leadership why did it not remove Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler from the party after their names cropped up in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan on molestation charges:
My only fault is that I’m from Aam Aadmi Party New Delhi The Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan sent his resignation letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today, as the leader found himself in the middle of yet another controversy. Khan could possibly be facing arrest after his sister-in-law lodged a case of molestation against him at the Jamia Nagar police station. This is the second time the MLA has been accused of harassing a woman. KHAN BEING TARGETED? Khan in his defense said, “We are related, but I haven’t met her in three years. Police are after me without any proof, would a BJP leader be treated the same way. My only fault is the fact that I’m from the Aam Aadmi Party” Khan, in his letter to the Chief Minister, wrote, “Some people are not liking my honesty and dedication. Therefore I would like
to get relieved of all responsibilities party has given me, I resign from all posts.”. Khan requested to be relieved of his duties as Jamia Nagar’s MLA and Chairman of Delhi Waqf Board. However, protocol requires an MLA to give their resignation letter to the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. But Khan has addressed his letter to Kejriwal, which the party
hasn’t accepted yet.Amanatullah has repeatedly come under authorities’ scanner after his alleged involvement in a recruitment scam in Waqf Board surfaced in the first week of September. The AntiCorruption Branch had raided Waqf Board’s Office on Thursday, a move Amanatullah had dubbed as an interference by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Najeeb Jung.
Don’t fight internally, Badal is wathcing us: Kejriwal tells partymen Ludhiana Asking his party workers to stay united, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, in his address to partymen in Ludhiana, accused the Badals of snooping on them. “Our internal fights will only make him (Badal) happy,” he said, while speaking to party workers in his house at Jhande village located on the outskirts of Ludhiana. “Badal will distribute laddus if he gets to hear that the volunteers are not united’, he added. Kejriwal’s message was aimed
at keeping his party together in the wake of internal wrangling and a spate of allegations that has rocked the party, especially following the removal of the state convener Sucha Singh Chottepur. “You people are fighting among yourselves. Wo zonal in-charge kyu lagaya ji; use ticket kyu din; use kyu nahi di? (Why has he been made the zonal in-charge; why has he been allotted the ticket). Ladai jhagde band karo. Badal bahut khush honge. Intelligence hai wahan ek ek
message ja raha hai. (Stop internal fighting, Badal has his intelligence network here. He is getting a minute by minute account of what is happening here),” he said. Kejriwal then went on to project the forthcoming assembly election as a golden opportunity for their party to work for the development of the state. “Agar humne Punjab ki janata ko toda, joote maarenge sub. (We should not betray the trust of the people or else they won’t forgive us), he said.

Who wrote ‘Kala Chashma’? A Punjab police head constable from Kapurthala! Jalandhar Have you heard the song ‘Kala Chashma’? The Punjabi song originally from the ‘90s is all the rage these days, thanks to the movie ‘Baar Baar Dekho’. But, have you heard of Amrik Singh Shera? He is a head constable in the Punjab police in Kapurthala. He is also the writer of the song. Shera, 43, a native of Talwandi Chaudhrian village near Jalandhar, is glad that his song, written in 1990, has made it to Bollywood, but had no idea that it would feature in a movie. “Two months ago, I got a call from one of my friends that ‘Kala Chashma’ was being played on one of the channels. I do not how I felt. I was happy but also shocked about everything that was happening,” says Shera. He claims he was approached by Jalandhar-based Angel Record Company four months ago for other songs “and I was told that a Mumbai-based company needed my song to be played at the inauguration of cement firm”. He signed the agreement and got only Rs 11,000 in return, he claims. “I don’t know name of the cement company. No one told me that the song will feature in a movie.” But he doesn’t mind, and says
he has “no ill-feelings for anyone”. His only grudge: “No one from the film industry called me to
Mumbai during the music launch or screening of the film. I just wanted to go there and let everyone know that a person from a small village in Punjab has written the song.” Shera had written the song when he was 15 and a student of Class 9. He says he had approached many singers at the time with his songs for release. “Amar Arshi (singer of the song) then took the song ‘Kala Chashma’ and performed it at a function in England. A company there released the song in England and it became a huge hit.” “Then, a Chandigarh-based company released the song in
Boy throws fake hand grenade in German school, shouts ‘Allahu Akbar’ as prank Berlin A German court has ordered a 15-year-old boy to do community work and write an essay titled “Why you shouldn’t make jokes
with toy weapons” after he threw a fake hand grenade in front of a teacher and shouted “Allahu akbar”. The teenager, a Moroccan citizen, had been charged with disturbing the peace by
threatening crimes. Duesseldorf district court spokesperson Marcel Due said a judge dropped the charges on Thursday on condition that he do 20 hours’ community work and hand in the threep a g e , handwritten essay. Due says the boy, whose name wasn’t released in keeping with German privacy rules, said the incident in May was meant as a prank and denied having any Islamic extremist motivation. He told the court he found the fake grenade lying in the schoolyard.
Punjab and that is how it became popular here,” he adds. Others songs by him have since been sung by popular singers such as Miss Pooja and Roshan Prince. “But real fame comes when a song enters Bollywood, and people go crazy about it,” he says, adding, “Punjabi song writers do not get their due. Being a writer here is not easy.” “I started writing songs because I wanted to become famous in my village. That dream has come true. But I wanted to make my village famous too, which could have been possible only if the makers had invited me. Hardly anyone even in Punjab knows that it’s my song,” he says. He has paid tribute to his village, though: “If you listen to ‘Kala Chashma’ carefully, in the last stanza I have mentioned my village Talwandi Chaudhrian’s name.”Gaurav Trehan, owner of Catrack record company, confirmed that the song was first released by them company in Punjab. Arshi, the singer, too said that the lyricist is indeed Amrik Singh Shera: “he wrote the original song, and I was the one who sang the song in England. After that, it got famous.”

According to police records, Amarjeet Singh who has been declared as a party candidate from Roopnagar assembly constituency had sodomised and brutally tortured a 17-yearold youth who worked as a trainee driver with him. The medical report also confirmed the crime. KEJRIWAL IGNORED THESE CHARGES? Arvind Kejriwal had ignored these evidences when AAP’s anticorruption cell members tried to apprise him at his residence in Delhi before the first list of candidates was released. Colonel Baljit Singh Chahal, who
was one of the three members present at Kejriwal’s residence, has disclosed to India Today how Kejriwal treated the serious allegations. NOT A CLEAN PARTY 24 out of the 32 candidates given tickets recently have a dubious past, confirm sources from the party. The three leaders who tried to meet Arvind Kejriwal today to discuss the same issue were thrown out. They staged a protest outside Kejriwal’s camp office in Ludhiana and criticised him. Sources close to the party said there are allegations against AAP leaders for selling tickets between Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crores and have ignored the genuine party workers. Meanwhile the party currently brainstorming the issue has said that it may cancel the tickets, once allegations are sustained with evidences.

Dawood henchman flees with Rs 40 crore, don probes ‘fraud’ NEW DELHI Dawood Ibrahim‘s fearsome reputation as a “global terrorist” and the
about the “embezzlement” through tapped conversations between Jabir Moti, Dawood’s
architect of the biggest global narco-terror syndicate does not seem to have deterred one of his henchmen, Khalique Ahmad, from stealing as much as Rs 40 crore from the don himself.According to intelligence intercepts, Khalique was supposed to have picked up Rs 45 crore from a New Delhi-based “safedposh” (white-collared person) and sent Rs 40 crore abroad through hawala channels, after keeping Rs 5 crore as Dawood‘s “transfer cost”.The 40 crores apparently disappeared, along with Khalique. Indian agencies learnt
henchman in Pakistan, and Khalique Ahmad, who used to shuttle between India and Sharjah, and used the number +9170852*22**. In the intercepts, Moti is heard telling Khalique that Dawood’s man, Razzak bhai, had raised the issue of misappropriation in the transaction. According to Razzak, Khalique misused the name of Bade Hazrat (Dawood) to swindle the money, causing a dent in the don’s reputation. The intercepts reveal that two of D Company “detectives” had even been sent from Delhi to
Canada on November 26, 2015 to investigate the “fraud”. Khalique is currently believed to be hiding in Manipur, sources said. Half of the Rs 40 crore was to be sent to a Panama bank and the other half was to be invested in Dawood’s businesses abroad. In the conversations, Khalique denies the e m b e z z l e m e n t allegations and says there had been some confusion. He explains that “broker accounts” had been activated to stash the cash wired from India. According to Khalique, Razzak had made some mistake in depositing the money in these accounts due to which the money had been blocked. He assures Moti that the money in Panama should be intact. Khalique further suggests the money could be withdrawn by him after he receives his credit/debit statements from the Panama bank. Or, he said, Razzak could take the money back into his account.Soon thereafter, Khalique went underground proving that he had indeed conned Dawood.
Keeping AAP out of power is bigger issue than defeating Badals, Amarinder thinks so CHANDIGARH Giving a new twist to battle of 2017 assembly elections, the Punjab Congress President Capt Amrinder Singh today observed that keeping outsiders Aam Aadmi party(AAP) out of power is major issue than defeating Badals. The statement is expected to ignite a fresh debate on political course of Congress at a time when people of state are looking ahead for a change. In a statement issue here Capt Amarinder said that this was not only the battle of getting Punjab rid of the Badals and Majithia it was the issue of “Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat which will not be allowed to be compromised by handing over the reins of the state to outsiders, who don’t even know the ‘P’ of Punjab”. Reiterating that he will make Kejriwal run away from Punjab, Capt Amarinder said, “Punjab is for Punjabis and I will not let any non-Punjabi to rule over Punjab, come what may”. He said, Punjab does not need Kejriwal to put the Badals and Majithia behind bars. “And I don’t
need your advice as how to deal with them (the Badals) as I have dealt with them in the past and I will deal with them in the future as well and whole of Punjab knows about it”, he updated Kejriwal. Reacting to farmers
manifesto issued by AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, Capt Amarinder Singh said that it was a poor carbon copy of what Congress has already committed and promised. He also asked as why AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal did not read the manifesto draft himself. He pointed out, the AAP had promised conditional loan waiver, while the Congress had already promised unconditional loan waiver to the farmers. “There are so many ifs and buts in the AAP manifesto betraying lack of confidence in the party to commit anything”, he said. Referring to other announcements made in the manifesto like bringing
in legislation to save farmers’ land from being auctioned in case of loan default, confiscation of Badals’ buses and providing these to the unemployed youth of the state, the PCC president said, the Congress party has already made these commitments long ago and mere perusal of the recent newspapers can enlighten them about it. On the AAP claims that the farmers’ produce will be lifted within 24 hours of its arrival in mandis and payment will be made within 72 hours, the former Chief Minister pointed out, he had already done it way back between 2002 and 2007 and whole of Punjab in general and the farmers in particular know about it. The PCC president also took a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for avoiding any reference to the Satluj Yamuna Link Canal, while otherwise repeating everything that was read from the manifesto. He pointed out, Kejriwal repeated everything verbatim that was already read, from the manifesto but deliberately avoided any reference to the SYL canal. “
Swadeshi style: Yoga guru Ramdev’s Patanjali company to make jeans Nagpur You may soon be able to stretch and bend in a pair of “swadeshi” denim that yoga guru Ramdev’s multicrore company, Patanjali, will manufacture and sell. He announced on Sunday his company will soon venture into the apparel market, making both traditional and modern clothes for men and women, as part of an ambitious expansion plan that aims to make Patanjali a global brand. “Swadeshi jeans will be launched by the end of the year or early next year. There was a great demand from the youth and, therefore, Patanjali decided to launch Indianised jeans to compete with foreign brands,” Ramdev said. “If permitted, I will start factories in Pakistan and Afghanistan.” The plans to expand into Europe and Africa are part of Patanjali’s breakneck growth strategy that has seen the company transform from a small pharmacy in 2007 to a retail behemoth. The company that deals with packaged food products, grocery, and hair and skin-care items has
grown more than 10 times since 2011-12 to Rs 5,000 crore in revenues last year. That’s more revenue clocked by consumer product majors, such as Emami, Dabur and Marico.
and the US,” he said. “There is a huge vacuum for quality products and Patanjali enjoys enormous public loyalty that ensures success.”Ramdev announced Patanjali will
The brand hit the headlines last year when it took on instant food behemoth Maggi by launching Patanjali noodles , adding to its wide range of atta, biscuits, honey and other food products. But Patanjali’s founder and chief promoter Ramdev wants to leverage the brand’s market reputation to foray into new sectors such as edible oils and toilet cleaners, besides expanding into other countries. “We have already put up units in Nepal. Now we are planning to go global with factories in Bangladesh and Africa and eventually spread wings to Europe
set up a composite unit in Bangladesh to make a whole range of its products for the Muslim-majority country. “We will also use the profit for the welfare of that country.” He said manufacturing units in poor countries will boost local economies and export products to rich nations such as the United States and Europe. Ramdev also rejected allegations that Patanjali’s growth was linked to the BJP’s coming to power, saying the success was because of 20 years of research by more than 200 scientists and professionals working for the company.

WORTH ONE WATCH
WE won’t say baar baar dekho, but Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra’s first outing together is okay for a one-time watch despite all the trite trappings. Nitya Mehra has made her directorial debut with what is definitely a wonky idea in romance by Bollywood standards. That line itself would seem like an achievement worth applauding in the cliché-ridden world of Hindi mainstream, where the jaded continues to be normal for mush. It’s obvious why this film had to shape up like a typical Hindi romance, despite freshness of concept. When you cast two of masala moviedom’s most beautiful people as romantic leads, experimentation with the classic love story is not a priority. Director Mehra is more than liberal while garnishing the overall melodrama plate with syrupy mush. The film is formulaic in all that it gives a passing nod to. Commitment phobia, separation pangs, lack of patience denting true love — these are all tools that have often been used to extend plots in contemporary Bollywood romances. Baar Baar Dekho does the same, beyond its mask of time travel science fiction. The sci-fi context in fact reminds you Baar Baar Dekho was obviously made for a generation fed on a generous Hollywood diet of romedies, by filmmaking brains who probably also belong to the same group. The film is sleek

and polished, it looks good and is meant to leave you feeling good. In short, this is the jolly old Bollywood prem kahaani with a sci-fi twist. In a love story it becomes important that the lead duo clicks together. Mehra has worked hard on setting up the right vibes between Katrina and Sidharth, it is
apparent. The two stars do share a certain chemistry in fact a lot of the hackneyed motions they go through are elevated beyond plasticity thanks to their efforts. They play Jai and Dia, childhood friends-turned-lovers, and they are all set to wed. On wedding day, however, Jai is gripped by self-doubt. He is no longer sure if he can balance professional life with marriage. Then, a freak time travel twist lets Jai see the future. He realises there are certain things he must set straight. The screenplay (Nitya Mehra, Anuvab Pal and Sri Rao) is original but erratic, which is the primary problem with this film. A film that unfolds through flashbacks and flashforwards needs control at a storytelling level. Baar Baar Dekho is bogged down in confusion while trying to balance its twists with drama and humour. Still, the film is worth ek baar dekho, if only for the gorgeous overall packaging of its lead duo, of the rocking naachgaana that wholly re-establishes why Katrina Kaif is Bollywood’s dancing queen, and of an interesting prop cast (welcome back Sarika). Baar Baar Dekho is the same old noodles with new flavour of tastemaker. In Bollywood, that is some improvement.
Goofed-up gag
MASALA moviedom’s Sultan has produced a film starring crossover cinema’s current darling. Freaky things are happening in Bollywood these days. Freaky Ali, however, does not serve up much freak factor beyond the sales pitch highlight that Salman Khan has produced
a film starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Nawaz flaunts his acting chops, just as we expect of him. The actor plays Ali, a goon who goes around collecting hafta. One day, by a twist of fate, Ali’s neighbour Kishan Lal (Asif Basra) discovers an unusual trait in Ali. The goon, it turns out, actually has an unlikely talent in golf. With the support of a manager/ girlfriend (Amy Jackson) and close friend Maqsood (Arbaaz Khan), Ali is soon fated to become a golfing sensation in true filmi style. Bearing faint shades of the 1996 Hollywood hit Happy Gilmore starring
Adam Sandler, Freaky Ali is meant to be a standard package of inspiration amid sporting glory, with random slapstick thrown in. The film uses golf to carry its tale forward, which would seem a unusual. It is not a sport Bollywood is normally interested in. The idea, though, is done in by shoddy writing and direction. Sohail Khan, trying to depart from the heavy-duty commercial tag as writerdirector, is absolutely out of place while trying to set up a realistic milieu. This, despite the fact that many scenes have basically been rehashed from Happy
Freaky Ali Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amy Jackson, Arbaaz Khan, Seema Biswas Direction: Sohail Khan
Gilmore. Amy Jackson’s presence would seem needless, except perhaps for the fact it maintains the cliché that a Hindi film has to have a pretty heroine. Arbaaz Khan is too rigid to pass off as a goon. he looks terribly out of emotive ideas in scenes he has to share with the supertalented Nawaz. Most other actors are strictly average. Casting Nawaz as a goon-turned golfer would seem like an idea for one hell of a freak fest. The film ends up a goofball gag, no fault of its leading star. — Vinayak Chakravorty

NEVER THE BITTER HALF! Akshay Kumar is the superstar of supportive husbands. As the spotlight turns to his wife in her avatar as an author, columnist and opinion leader, the actor is the one cheering the loudest! Mumbai’s Filmalaya studio in Andheri West is buzzing. The cameraman is in heated discussion with the director, jabbing his index finger at the two cameras, comparing and contrasting the two frames. Crew members in black T-shirts are muttering into mikes and scribbling on their spreadsheets. It’s noisy and over-airconditioned, making the constant supply of coffee and tea a necessity. I feel useless, perched on my chair amidst the hullabaloo. After waiting for three hours, four cups of tea and countless yawns, I get to meet Akshay Kumar. My first impression is, “He’s so fit and tall for his age!” (Kumar is 48 and five feet eleven.) He says, “Oh! You are the one who has flown in from Delhi?” and introduces himself, “Hi. I am Akshay. Sorry to have kept you waiting.” I get to discover that Kumar is a man of few words. Sample this: “Are you treated like a celebrity at home?” “No, I am not.” “Do you regret that you didn’t complete your education?” “Yes. But my college principals don’t.” Maybe he’ll talk about his son, Aarav, who got a first degree black belt in Japanese martial art Kudo after nine years of training. “How’s your relationship with your son?” “Great!” I wait for a few seconds and hope for more words to tumble out. But I’m disappointed, yet again. ‘This can’t work,’ I think. ‘How’ll I ever get a story out of one-word answers?’ Perhaps I’m thinking out loud because Kumar says,
“Oh! You want detailed answers? To aisa bolna chahiye na.” IN FAMILIAL TERRAIN Suddenly, Kumar opens up and becomes more loquacious – about family, the industry and a lot more. “I have a very good rapport with my son – more like a friend than a father… I don’t know (if he wants to be an actor). He is just a 13yearold boy. That question is not even in my head right now. I want him to become a good human being,” says Kumar. “He has his own footsteps, he has his own mark, he has his own vision, his own perspective of life. I wouldn’t want him to follow in my footsteps. I want him to have his own ways, I will be very happy with that.” Akshay Kumar and his wife, Twinkle Khanna, married for 15 years, are opposites. “She is blunt, I am diplomatic. I like vegetarian food, she likes non-vegetarian. I don’t have much anger in me; she gets angry easily. So we are poles apart, and that’s the best part.” After Kumar’s wife decided to quit movies (her last was E Nivas’s Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega in 2001), Kumar became the celebrity of the house. But today she is not just a star wife, but a talked about columnist, author (her first book Mrs Funnybones was an instant hit) and opinion maker. Does her success make Kumar insecure? “Why should I feel insecure about anything? I am more glad than anybody. It makes me happy that she can find a new career, from being an actress, from being an ace interior designer, to something else. And she can change whenever she wants to, whatever she wants to,
because her mind is brilliant.” THE CHOSEN ONE Acting was never part of Kumar’s plan. “I didn’t realise [that acting is my calling] till I got my first film. It has a small story attached to it.” I prod him. “This is a question I’ve answered 10,000 times,” he says wearily. “People who’ll read your article, know it by now. They may shoot you if I narrate it again.” But I’ll take the risk. In 1989, Kumar got a modelling assignment for which he had to fly to Bengaluru in the evening. “I’d woken up at 5 to exercise and at 5.15, I got a call saying: ‘Where are you?’ to which I replied that I was at home,” Kumar said on The Anupam Kher Show. “I was told that I was extremely unprofessional and would never be able to work. I realised the flight was in the morning! I cried and when I managed to reach the airport, the plane had already left.” That evening, he wandered into Mumbai’s Natraj Studios, where he met director and producer Pramod Chakraborty’s make-up artist Narendra Dada. “He asked me: ‘Beta, hero banna hai?’ Then Pramod da saw me and said: ‘Photo achhi hai tumhari, hero banoge?’” And he signed a cheque for `5,001 as a token for the first of three movies starring Kumar. Kumar’s family was elated. “Who wouldn’t be? To get to see their son on screen – that is the biggest thing for any family.” Especially when your family is composed of movie buffs. Going to the movies was the only form of entertainment Kumar’s family knew then. “We
would buy `15 tickets, even `8 tickets for that matter… From Kanti Shah’s films, to Yash Chopra’s to Karan Johar’s – till today we watch every film.” Kumar reminisces about the first day on the sets of his first release in 1991 – Raj Sippy’s Saugandh opposite Raakhee and Shantipriya. “The first shot I gave was a handstand. My legs were coming towards the camera. Log sabse pehle apna chehra dikhaate hain, maine apni taangein dikhaayi thi camera ko,” he laughs. “And the second scene was Rakheeji slapping me.” He laughs even harder. From modelling to ranking 9th on Forbes’s global list of the highest-paid actors (outdoing actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt) in 2016 – Kumar has done more than 100 films. TO B OR NOT TO B? Over his 25-year-long career, Kumar has received a lot of criticism. “People called me a Bgrade actor. I did feel nice because I thought a Bgrade actor was a ‘breadandbutter’ actor... I thought of every film as a film, regardless of grade. Automatically, I became Agrade,” said Kumar on The Anupam Kher Show. This June, Housefull 3 got bad reviews: Anupama Chopra from the Hindustan Times rated it a 1.5, calling it “racist, sexist and willfully rude about people who are differently abled. But the worst sin, in my book, is that it’s just not funny”. The Indian Express headline read thus: “Me to Brain, ‘leaving you behind for a bit, don’t mind’” and its film critic, Shubhra Gupta, graced the movie with – no stars.
Kumar is unfazed. He says casually, he’d choose a continuous fiveweek run on the box office over a five-star from a critic. “I would give up my five-star rating for a onestar in exchange for ten weeks on the box office… Box office numbers are what matter! And if anybody says otherwise, woh jhooth bol rahe hain.” Housefull 3 crossed the ‘100-crore mark in a matter of days, making it one of the highestopening week grossers of 2016. But things were not always going swimmingly for Kumar. There was a time when he delivered 15
consecutive flops. “I am not a loser. I don’t give up. This is what martial arts has taught me,” says Kumar. Twenty-five years. More than 100 films. And numerous hits. Yet Kumar has never been part of any Bollywood ‘camp’. From Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26 to Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara!, he has worked with an array of filmmakers. “I do not believe in camps. In my head, I live in a palace and I have lots of space for everyone. I do not belong to cramped camps,” he had said in a 2012 interview. He is one of the most disciplined actors in the industry. “If there’s one aspect of Bollywood I’d want to knock out, it would be unpunctuality,” says Kumar. “Even if I have to enter a plane, I don’t want to be the last, because I’d be very embarrassed. Ki iski wajah se plane late ho gaya!” Does it get tough to work with other people? “Things change. When I shoot, most people come on time. They respect the fact that I respect time,” says Kumar. What hasn’t changed? Kumar ponders for a few seconds, and says: “The people who make bald wigs, they still cannot make them properly.” Of course, he looks very serious.
TWINKLE, TWINKLE’S SUPERSTAR The proud wife talks about her good husband
Akshay has done different kinds of movies. Your opinion of his choices? I really enjoyed Special 26 and Baby along with his first Hera Pheri, which is my favourite in a way. I think he’s at an interesting phase in his career where one never knows what he’s going to come up with next, like the cameo he did in Dishoom. Akshay thinks he is diplomatic and you are blunt. Comment. He has a great sense of what works, and is very diplomatic and I am outspoken. But we
enjoy these differences between us. What kind of rapport does he share with the kids? He is a very hands-on father. I’ve left the kids with him when I travel and when I come back home, the kids always look fine. But the house seems to fall apart for some reason, right from the computer to the doorbell. Mrs Funnybones, was a hit. How supportive was he through writing the book? He reads everything I write first and then, like a child, I wait for him to give me marks. He has been my biggest support. But he is also my censor board, as sometimes I do go too far. How difficult is it to be with a workaholic? He has always been a workaholic, but he also comes home at 7 pm and disconnects from the movie business, so that evens it out.

Talking about the location, Mel B said: “Well, since we’re a British band, we’re probably going to start in London.” Asked why they are reuniting as a trio, Brown joked: “Cause the other two b*****s didn’t
want to do it,” referring to Melanie C and Victoria Beckham. The 41-year-old explained: “You know Victoria is busy with her great fashion line and Mel C is doing her own album, so they gracefully said, ‘You three go ahead and do it.’ We’re girl power. We support each other.”

Empire star Taraji P Henson says she will not get married until she finds real love. The 45-year-old actress said she wants to set a good example for her son, Marcell, 22. “If I was going to get married, it had to be for love, because I wanted Marcell to see that kind of love, the kind I yearn for. That old couple crooked and bent over but still holding hands. I know that kind of love exists and I’m not going to stop until I have that,” she said. Henson is a single mother. She got pregnant in high school while Marcel’s father and her boyfriend William Johnson. was murdered in 2003.

Kiss and run ActorTom Hiddleston called it quits with singerTaylor Swift after a whirlwind romance apparently because he cannot stay in a relationship. Friends ofthe Thor star have claimed Hiddleston broke up with Swift because he is a ‘commitmentphobe who gets bored easily,’ reported a website. “Tom is a commitmentphobe. Even his sisters affectionately chide him on his lack of relationship staying power,” a source said. “Taylor knows what went on with Tom and won’t be affected by his team’s claims. It’s all water under the bridge as far as she’s concerned,” the source added.
All love lost? Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges says he does not want to make movies because they take up all his time and stop him from pursuing other things. “I really try my best not to do movies. I have so many other things I like to do, like playing guitar. Once you commit, you are busy so I really try not to engage,” Bridges said. However, he admits it is tough to turn down good scripts, such as his latest movie Hell or High Water, a crime drama. “You get a script like Demi Lovato has bought the rehab this one, and clinic where she first sought help. The you end up Confident hitmaker has bought the doing (another CAST Center where she was admitted film). for depression, bulimia and substance abuse, reported a website.”It just feels good,” Lovato said about the deal. Her manager Phil McIntyre added: “How many 24-year-olds own their own treatment centre? DiCaprio's film to make climate a US election issue Hollywood heartthrob and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio said he rushed to release his upcoming climate change documentary "Before the Flood" ahead of November's US presidential elections to issue a clarion call to US voters in time to influence their decisions. "We wanted this film to come out before the next election because ... the United States is the largest contributor to this issue," DiCaprio said to the audience after the film's world premiere at the Toronto International
Film Festival on Friday. "We cannot afford, at this critical moment in time, to have leaders in office that do not believe in the modern science of climate change," he added. The film follows the Oscarwinning DiCaprio and actor-filmmaker Fisher Stevens as they travel from Canada's oil sands to tiny Pacific islands, nterviewing world leaders such as the Catholic Church's Pope Francis and US President Barack Obama, climate scientists and academics. DiCaprio's interview subjects discuss and document the negative
impacts of industrialization and increasing consumption on the health of the planet. "The fact that we are still debating any of this is just utter insanity to
me," DiCaprio said. The actor, who won an Oscar this year for playing a fur trapper battling nature's elements in "The Revenant," was an
executive producer on 2014 Oscar-nominated documentary "Virunga," about the threatened gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This year, he is an executive producer on Netflix documentary "The Ivory Game," about Africa's illegal ivory trade, also making its debut at the Toronto film festival. "Before the Flood" is out in New York and Los Angeles theaters on Oct. 21 and airs on National Geographic Channel globally on Oct. 30. The film calls out the sizable minority of Republican lawmakers
who flatly deny the broad scientific evidence that human activity is causing environmental damage, and names presidential candidate Donald Trump and former candidates Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. It seeks to effect a balance between making clear that the earth is facing a massive danger while also offering audiences a glimmer of hope that catastrophe can be averted. The gloom came from DiCaprio and the hope from Stevens, the pair said in the question and answer session that followed the screening.

Amid raids on biryani vendors over cow meat, MLA and residents allege it is openly sold in the Haryana district with protection from corrupt policemen
MEWAT’S OPEN BEEF SECRET
STREET vendors are allegedly selling beef biryani on wheels by paying off the police in Haryana’s Mewat district, residents and the local legislator told Mail Today on Friday against the backdrop of a swirling controversy over the use of the forbidden meat in the Muslim-dominated area. Authorities collected samples of biryani from shopkeepers and hawkers last week from Mundaka village, 85km from Gurugram, and sent them to a laboratory following a flurry of allegations. However, the office of Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal said it was yet to be determined whether the collected samples contained beef. It denied that any report on the
issue from the Hisar lab has been released to the government. “Once the report is out we will know whether there was beef in the biryani samples or not. Then, as it is a matter of law, we will act accordingly,” said Amit Arya, the CM’s media adviser. “It is not a communal issue at all.” Haryana has stringent cow protection laws with slaughter of the animal, considered sacred by many Hindus, drawing punishment of 10 years in jail and a person can be imprisoned for five years for trading in beef. A reality check on the ground by MAIL TODAY threw up contradictory claims from several stakeholders in the district that has long been seen as the centre of a spectrum of illicit activities. A drive across Mewat revealed that the number of biryani sellers had actually gone down. While earlier they thrived at every
intersection and dotted the entire maze of highways crisscrossing the district, only a few could be spotted on Friday. Local Muslims, including their representatives in local bodies such as panchayats, told MAIL TODAY team that cow meat was a usual ingredient in the biryani preparation of street vendors. The ordinary Muslim folk of the district do not believe in the logic of cow slaughter being a pivot of Islam, they said. “A certain section of people in Mewat believe in eating beef, but the majority does not,” said a panchayat member of the biggest village of Mewat, Ghasera. . “Street vendors use beef in their biryani and that is the attraction for such people as truck drivers. We want cow slaughter to end in favour of ‘BEEF SOLD OPENLY IN MEWAT UNDER COP PROTECTION’ communal
harmony, but some people do practice it to suit their religion though their motive is purely divisive and political.” This local Meo Muslim—a community whose members have long been considered as Hindu converts and so the region boasted of exceptional communal harmony even during the tumultuous days of the Partition— also said that cow smugglers are active in the region and several incidents had occurred in his own village over the past four months. “Many of us helped the police nab these culprits. Nowadays, they have
evolved imaginative ways to smuggle cows such as inside oil tankers; they are so adept that they are even able to stuff a fullblooded cow inside a car as small as a hatchback,” he said. The police, though, he claimed were also to blame as they had failed to nab many of these smugglers and butchers, while he alleged that cops were even complicit in this underground black economy.

‘ISIS ideology fuelled J&K crisis’
OIC INVITE TO HURRIYAT LEADER THE Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) invited Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday for a meeting on Jammu and Kashmir from September 19-22 at the UN headquarters in New York. The meeting would be held during the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly. A Hurriyat spokesman said that OIC had issued a letter of invitation to Mirwaiz for the meeting. The OIC is the second largest inter-governmental
organisation after United Nations with a membership of 57 states spread over four continents. According to OIC, it is the collective voice of the Muslim world and ensures that the interests of Muslims worldwide are protected. In April too, OIC secretary general Iyad bin Amin Madani had invited Mirwaiz for its 13th Summit in Turkey. However, Mirwaiz couldn’t go as he did not possess travel documents. At present, Mirwaiz is in custody and has been
shifted to Chasmashahi subjail. On Sunday, he refused to meet the all-party delegation when they tried to reach out to him and other separatist leaders in the Valley. He has been regularly seeking the OIC’s intervention on the Kashmir issue. The OIC’s invite has come at a time when the government is contemplating restrictions on foreign travel for separatists and scrutinising their bank accounts.
The world’s ‘most beautiful cat’ has over 87,000 Insta followers! IT’S normally celebrities who induce wardrobe envy, but with her crystal tiaras, flower headdresses and sparkling tutus, Princess Aurora the cat is a strong contender. The blueeyed bi-colour ragdoll from Sweden is not only a bona fide model, she has over 87,000 Instagram followers and spends her days being pampered. The self-styled ‘world’s most royal and beautiful cat’ also has a devoted fan base, takes part in lucrative product endorsements and has people creating fan art of her. Just this week, the rising star shared her first commercial on social media, a 30-second ad for Swedish company Kattbox. Perhaps unsurprisingly, her besotted owners, Emily and Niklas, revealed that the feline can be something of a diva. They told BoredPanda: “Cats are known for being the rulers of the house and Aurora takes that to the next level. She knows she is

beautiful, at least that’s what her manners imply. It’s her way or no way basically.” So what does the moggie do all day? “She enjoys doing what most royalties do: Eat, sleep and being pampered,” they said. Aurora aparently likes nothing more than striking a pose for the camera and modelling the latest fashions, and even has a special friend called Prince Phillip. The blue colourpoint ragdoll is nicknamed ‘Philly’ and fans call him their ‘handsome fluff monster’. A recent shot of her modelling a bow tie racked up 4,100 likes and when she posed in a diamanté tiara, followers called her ‘lovely’, ‘gorgeous’ and ‘beautiful’ - with one commenting: “I feel intimidated by this cat. why is it so pretty?”
THE central government has drawn up a tough strategy to deal with the unrest in Kashmir after intelligence inputs suggested that the current round of trouble was inspired by ISIS-inspired elements, highly-placed official sources told India Today TV. The new strategy was finalised after the recent visit of an all-party delegation and talks with various stakeholders in the restive state, the sources disclosed. According to the latest plan, accessed by India Today TV, strengthening the security apparatus in Jammu and Kashmir is the top priority for the government now. The new strategy focuses on ensuring that security forces get an upper hand in the state. Senior officials said that the government believes the situation is worse in rural Kashmir than in the Valley. Taking a tough position is important at this time, revealed a top government official. The idea is to send a clear message to protesters that ‘Azadi’ is out of the question, he added. Also, the government, at the highest levels, has learnt that the ongoing demonstrations are being fuelled by 3,000-odd Jamiat-backed mosques that have come up in the Valley recently. This phase of protests, according to highly-placed sources, is inspired by the ideology of ISIS with an object to topple the current government violently and create a theocratic
state founded on Talibani principles. Unlike the protests of the last decade, the Hurriyat is playing only a marginal role in the demonstrations this time, government sources say. The grouping has largely been rendered leaderless, they add. Holding talks with the Hurriyat, therefore, serves little purpose, according to government sources. These sources said that the time is not yet ripe for discussion on the question of greater autonomy because the proponents of autonomy have been totally sidelined. Revocation of AFSPA from Jammu and Kashmir has also been ruled out for now as the government believes that any such measure would deeply curtail the ability of the Indian state to enforce law and order. A top officials said that the government wants the security apparatus in the state not to be weakened in any way. At the same time, the government also wants to reach out to the aam aadmi of Kashmir and help heal the wounds of those impacted by the twomonth-long upheaval. The government, sources say, will go out of its way in providing succour to those who have been injured and to the kin of those who have lost their lives. The government is also trying to minimise the use of pellet guns in the valley. Around 1,000 pava chilli grenades are being sent to Kashmir every day as a possible substitute.

EMBRACE ‘HYGGE’ This Danish term translates to the English word “coziness, but it covers much more. It’s all about creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere – from atmospheric restaurants and intimate coffee shops to good company, fleecy rugs and candle light. There are many places in Copenhagen to experience the famous Danish “Hygge for yourself. For me a good example of local hygge was an afternoon at the Paludan Bogcafe next to the University library with book - lined walls, tasty meals, great coffee and a cozy atmosphere! DO AS THE LOCALS DO Head to the wooden pontoons at Islands Brygge which are good spots for sunbathing and swimming in the clean harbour water. Take your lead from Copenhagen’s residents and get on your bike — the terrain is flat and easy to navigate, the roads are set up with dedicated bike lanes for greater cycling safety, and it’s a cheap and green alternative for getting around a very pretty city.
VISIT THE HAMLET CASTLE Make a trip to Helsingor, to see the famous Kronberg Renaissance castle, a UNESCO site where Shakespeare actually set the play of Hamlet in. Take a tour with actors donning period costumes dressed as Horatio or Ophelia. First couple sets relationship goals PRESIDENT Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle have graced the cover of the October issue of Essence, which includes a romantic photos of the couple that has social media swooning. As the Obamas prepare for their final months in the White House, they have been featured in the special collector’s issue, that hit stands on Friday, in which they open up about their legacy. On the cover, the couple is pictured standing close to one another, flashing big smiles, as the first lady gently rests her hand on the president’s chest. But the stunning cover photo has been upstaged by a sweet snap inside the issue, showing the couple holding hands as they lovingly stare into one another’s eyes. The photo was taken in front of a window inside the White House, and has garnered praise from several fans on social media. “Can we just take a moment??? Obama and Michelle in love on #Essence Sept cover #BlackLove,” one user wrote. “Now this is #RelationshipGoals. I’m going to miss the Obamas,” another user wrote. “The one and absolute only thing I like about the Obama’s is their love for each other,’ a user commented. Some fans went on to praise Michelle Obama’s physique as she wore a formfitting, off-the-shoulder black dress. “But can we talk about Michelle Obama in these Essence photos?” a user wrote. “Michelle Obama gotta be the first FLOTUS in FLOTUS history to look more beautiful as time progressed,” another user pointed out. “Yes, black love. Yes, Obama love. And with all respect, black body love,” a commenter wrote. The issue’s cover story includes Obama’s most notable moments during his eight-year term as president. “I can unequivocally say that America is better off now than we were when we came into office,” President Obama told Essence. “By almost every economic measure, we’re better off. But having said that, we still have a lot of work to do.” The Obamas also talk about the legacy they hope to leave behind, hoping their initiatives including Let’s Move and My Brother’s Keeper, will live on. The first lady
notes she hopes their visibility will continue to inspire black children. “I think when it comes to Black kids, it means something for them to have spent most of their life seeing the family in the White House look like them. It matters,” Michelle Obama told Essence. “All the future work that Barack talked about, I think over these last few years we’ve kind of knocked the ceiling of limitation off the roofs of many young kids’ imaginations of what’s possible for them. “And as a mother, I wouldn’t underestimate how important that is, having that vision that you can really do anything— not because somebody told you, but because you’ve seen and experienced it. “I think that will be a lasting impact on our kids.” President Obama said the memories from his time in office that he will take with him are all
In Hong Kong, iPhone7 marketing goes awry APPLE’S ‘This is 7’ slogan for its new iPhone 7 has a rather unfortunate translation in Hong Kong. Smartphone users have been mocking the technology firm’s latest marketing line because it sounds just like ‘This is penis’ in Cantonese. China is one of Apple’s biggest markets, but the translations for its new slogan differ drastically across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. While mainlanders and Taiwanese people predominantly speak Mandarin, Hong Kong dwellers typically converse in Cantonese, which is why the comical translation only affects them. Many Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong took to social media to mock the x-rated gaffe, reports Quartz. “The slogan ‘7, is here’ in China is the best. They got so many ‘7’s,” said one Facebook user. “Why didn’t people say anything during the launch of Windows 7?” queried another. “How about iPhone 7 Plus? More ‘7’s?” suggested another user on the social network. The two spoken dialects are vastly different, and also make use of different characters. While the translated slogans are inoffensive in Mandarin, in Cantonese, ‘seven’ is pronounced as ‘chat’ which also happens to be a slang word for penis.
of the family memories. “Some of my fondest memories of the White House are just being with the girls on a summer night and walking the dogs around the South Lawn, talking and listening to them, trying to get Bo to move because sometimes it’s hot.” The First Lady has also been featured on the October cover of InStyle magazine, in which she discusses her Let Girls Learn initiative.
Woman’s topless bike ride ends in pain & tears
THIS is the unfortunate moment a topless woman gets her knickers in a twist when she takes tumble over the handlebars of her bicycle. For reasons unclear the semi-nude cyclist is pedalling along the road with her female friend, who also rides bra-less. A man on a motorcycle films the four down what is believed to be a street in Italy. He focuses in on the nearly naked riders, but they don’t seem to mind. The cyclist at the front even throws her arms in the air and shakes around to show off her slender figure. But getting a little too into her showboating she veers off the road and onto the dirt verge. Unable to control her ride she is flung head over heels and face-plants the tarmac. Instead of stopping and making himself the saviour of the fallen woman, the rider appears to simply drive off. The video was posted to video sharing site LiveLeak yesterday where it quickly went viral. One user wrote: “Definitely no gentleman.”
Mallya: Want to return but no passport WHILE Vijay Mallya is willing to visit India after his long stay in London, he has expressed his inability to do so claiming that his passport has been revoked without a hearing. On Friday, instead of personally appearing before the court, Mallya filed an application in the court through his counsel seeking exemption and also dispensation of the case in his absence. Mallya told the court, “On April 15, my passport came to be suspended by the Indian Passport Authority and was later revoked without a personal hearing. I have been staying in London since the revocation of my passport and do not possess requisite documents that can enable me to travel to India.” Mallya also said that he is trying his best to get the revocation set aside. Public Prosecutor Navin Matta told the court that Mallya is evading questioning and proceedings in other matters against him. After the hearing, the court granted Mallya a day’s exemption and has sought reply from
the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and fixed the matter for further hearing October 4. The liquor baron was directed to personally appear before a Delhi court on September 9 after his 16-year long exemption from personal appearance in a FERA violation case was lifted. The matter is at the stage of final arguments. On July 9, the court had asked Mallya to appear before it personally on September 9 after allowing the ED plea to withdraw the exemption given to him from personal appearance in the case. The ED had filed the case against Mallya after he allegedly evaded summons issued to him in connection with reported payment of $200,000 to a British firm for displaying the Kingfisher logo in the Formula One World Championships in London and some European countries in 1996, 1997 and 1998. The agency had claimed that the money was paid without prior approval from RBI in violation of FERA norms.

PRINCE Harry has reason to pop open the bubbly tonight, after being voted the world’s hottest male royal. The 31-yearold heartthrob easily beat his big brother Prince William, who came ninth in the ranking. In second place was Prince Carl Philip, 37, who is fourth in line to the Swedish throne and married to model Sofia Hellqvist. Third place went to Andrea Casiraghi, fourth in line to the throne of Monaco and married to the heiress Tatiana Santo Domingo. The only other British royal to join the princes in the top 10 was Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips, 38, the Queen’s oldest grandchild, who came tenth. The results are from a new poll of 1,000 women, by Crown Clinic in Manchester, a leading hair transplant centre. The survey also found that it was more than Harry’s good looks that won him the hearts of the female population. Women described the prince as ‘fun’ but also considered him a great ambassador for Britain and the royal family. In fourth place in the survey was Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, 33, the Crown Prince of Dubai, who is single and writes poetry under the name Fazza. Fifth was Prince Félix, 32, who is second in line for the throne of Luxembourg. The European royal speaks seven languages and is married to German scientist Claire Lademacher. The sixth place went to 42- year-old Prince Wenzeslaus of Liechtenstein who used to date the Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima. Despite having his winning royal status, King Felipe VI of Spain only came in seventh place. The eighth place went to Weather girl’s denim shorts raises the heat A VIDEO of a popular TV weather girl has caused quite a storm online thanks to her unfortunate wardrobe malfunction. Presenter Sugey Abrego from Mexico was wearing a tight pink tank top and denim hot pants as she presented the weather forecast live on air. But unbeknownst to her, viewers claimed the 37year-old’s tight shorts are bunched in a such a way to draw the attention rather lower down than she might like. Despite how uncomfortable the mishap looked, Sugey seemed totally at ease as she continued to present the forecast. The video has now gone viral online thanks to eagle-eyed viewers sharing the clip. The weather girl has so far not addressed the attention she’s received as a result of her tight-fitting attire. But this is not the weather girl’s first brush with international fame. The dark haired beauty is popular on social

Dr Shahmalak added: “The other fun finding from the poll is that it was won by a gingerhaired man. You don’t find many Hollywood leading men who are redheads but Harry shows that it is a very attractive hair colour. I think Harry’s whole look has been enhanced by his recent beard which really suits him.”
D-company money flows back into B-Town
THE latest Dawood Company intercepts have sent shock waves among top intelligence officials. Telephonic intercepts show that D-Company is roundtripping money for a top Bollywood superstar and some unidentified whitecollar people of India. Bade Hazrat is the new code name being used for Dawood Ibrahim by his operatives during their conversations. What is even more interesting is that one of Dawood’s operative has siphoned off a part of the black money of white-collar persons meant to be sent to Panama and

Canada. Dawood is worried that his reputation in the underworld will take a beating due to the breach of trust by one of his own men. However, central intelligence agencies are concerned as government is going full-throttle to bring back black money back into India. They have some idea about the identity of the Bollywood star but they are yet to identify the other Indians whose money was sent abroad in 2012. Some of them could also be politicians. Documents accessed by India Today TV show that D-Company was engaged in converting black money into white for a Bollywood superstar, who has had a long stint in the film industry. Round-tripping is a term used for the illegal act of converting black money into white by routing it to tax havens and then bringing it back to India. Decades ago, D-Company had
connections with the Bollywood industry. However, due to pressure of crackdown by enforcement agencies, he had snapped his ties. The intercepts of telephonic conversation between DCompany’s Pakistan-based operative and another in Sharjah, show that a DCompany team had transferred black money to Panama and Canada as late as 2012. The operatives had discussed a figure of ‘45’, of which ‘20’ belonged to a Bollywood superstar and ‘5’ was to be given to D-Company as commission and the remaining was to be invested in Panama and Canada. It is not clear whether they were talking about `45 crores or `45 thousand crores. The money was supposed to be brought back to India as white money. Some unidentified brokers had been activated by D-Company for this purpose. Interestingly during the conversation the top Pakistan-based operative informed the Sharjah-based operative that the third person, who had deposited the money in banks informed them that some money had been misappropriated by Sharjah-based operative in the name of “Bade Hazrat.” To which the Sharjahbased operative replied that there has been no misappropriation on his part. But the person who had
deposited the money in Panama and Canada made some mistake due to which the money was possibly blocked in banks. And the blocked money could only be retrieved after he received debit/ credit card statements from his banks. The Sharjah-based operative (who is of Delhi-origin) had sent two of his associates to Canada on November 16, 2015 and they were to reach a place where they were to receive debit/credit card statements. However intelligence sources said the Sharjahbased operative and the person who deposited the money are blaming each other for the goofup. And that Dawood is not happy with this bickering. He wants to know what went wrong due to which the money of whitecollared persons have been blocked. Intelligence sources say it is more important to identify those Indians, including the Bollywood star, who are doing financial dealings with DCompany. A top intelligence official told India Today TV such persons will soon be narrowed down.

This is a good time to go with the flow and allow things to happen by themselves.
A creative professional opportunity allows you to be original and express your ideas freely this week. A personal relationship is vital and romantic as there is energy and fire in it. Despite changes in personal and professional situations you remain firmly entrenched in a position of power and authority. You are likely to indulge in luxury shopping or splurge during a short holiday. It is gainful to invest in land, home, property or antiques at this point. Technology Google to buy cloud software company Apigee for $625 million San Francisco Alphabet Inc‘s Google said on Thursday it is acquiring cloud software company Apigee Corp in a deal valued at about $625 million, the tech giant’s latest effort to claim a greater share of the lucrative cloud business. San Jose-based Apigee‘s software helps companies‘ digital services interact with apps used by customers and partners. The service is critical for businesses transitioning to the cloud, Diane Greene, who runs Google‘s cloud computing division, said in an interview. “They are a leader in this application programming interface area,” she said. Cloud computing is the increasingly popular practice of using remote internet servers to store, manage and process data. Apigee specializes in managing socalled application programming interfaces, or APIs, the channels through which digital services connect when a company logs a purchase for a customer or places an order with a supplier. Google will pay Apigee shareholders $17.40 for each share,
a 6.5 percent premium to the stock‘s Wednesday close. Apigee‘s shares were slightly above the offer price at $17.43 on Nasdaq in afternoon trading on Thursday. The company, whose customers include AT&T, Burberry Group Plc, Vodafone Group Plc and the World
Bank, went public in April last year at $17 per share. Greene, a former VMware CEO, has pushed to raise Google‘s profile in corporate computing since she joined last year. During her tenure, Google has streamlined engineering efforts and appointed new leadership for its cloud efforts, improving traction with clients, Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said during the company‘s latest earnings call. Greene predicted that the Apigee acquisition would redouble
How Apple’s Twitter account ruined big iPhone 7 event
San Francisco As Apple was gearing up to present its big iPhone 7 announcement at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium here on Wednesday, the company‘s reactivated Twitter account, in a series of tweets, sent out photos and video of the new iPhone 7 and highlighting some of its top features before CEO Tim Cook could get to it on stage. “The tweets appear to have been sent out accidentally and Apple pulled them just a few minutes after they began spreading around but till then, they were retweeted thousand of times,” The
Verge reported. The tweets leaked new colours, water resistance and a dual camera of new iPhone 7. Apple unveiled its much anticipated stunning iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus along with nextgeneration ‘Apple Watch Series 2‘. iPhone 7 has water and dust resistance, duallens camera (in iPhone 7 Plus), 4.6-inch retina HD display, a new home button, 7MP HD front camera and 12MP rear main camera, no traditional 3.5 mm headphone jack, iOS 10, A10 fusion chip and and longest battery life to date.
Google‘s momentum. “Our customer lists are extremely complimentary,” she said. “There`s some overlap and some areas where we are going to be able to help each other once [the deal] closes.” The Apigee deal comes a day after Google and online storage company Box Inc said they would partner to enable Box‘s corporate customers to integrate Google‘s suite of word processing, spreadsheets and other productivity tools, known as Google Docs. Google, Amazon.com Inc, Microsoft Corp, IBM Corp and others are vying for a share of the fast-growing corporate cloud computing business. Apigee, with high-profile clients in a strategically important area, will help Google close in on the competition, said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy. “Google has fallen behind both Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services in enterprise cloud computing, and this move is intended to strengthen that position,” he wrote in an email.
Facebook launches 3 new solutions to help small businesses
New Delhi Social media giant Facebook on Thursday launched three new solutions to help small businesses become large and local businesses become global. Businesses can now use ‘Lookalike Audiences‘ tool to reach customers in new countries who are similar to their existing ones, Facebook said in a statement. “Any business which wants to increase installs of app, increase engagement in app or increase conversion on site can now target people worldwide or in a
specific region,” it added. Facebook will then deliver ads to selected regions and then optimise delivery to the countries with the greatest return. To help businesses optimise global campaign strategy, Facebook is releasing new webinars and a handbook on international marketing techniques. Businesses are already using Facebook to expand their business globally. “More than 175 million people from around the world are connected to a business in India,” Facebook noted. Nearly 59 per cent of people on Facebook in the country are connected to at least one SMB (small and mediumsized business) in the country. Also, 41 per cent of people on Facebook in the country are connected to at least one SMB in a foreign country.
Microsoft gets support in gag order lawsuit from US companies Washington Technology, media, pharmaceutical and other companies, along with major corporate lobbying groups, filed legal briefs on Friday in support of a Microsoft Corp lawsuitthat aims to strike down a law preventing companies from telling customers the government is seeking their data. Friday was the deadline for filing of friend-of-the-court briefs by nonparticipants in the case. The filings show broad support for Microsoft and the technology industry in its latest high-profile clash with the U.S. Justice Department over digital privacy and surveillance. Microsoft‘s backers included the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, Delta Air Lines Inc, Eli Lilly and Co, BP America, the Washington Post, Fox News, the National Newspaper Association, Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc‘s Google, Amazon.com Inc, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and many others. Microsoft filed its lawsuit in
Seattle federal court in April, arguing that a law allowing the government to seize computer data located on third-party computers and often barring companies from telling their customers that they are targets is unconstitutional.
The Justice Department argues that Microsoft has no standing to bring the case and the public has a “compelling interest in keeping criminal investigations confidential.” Procedural safeguards also protect constitutional rights, it contends. A Justice Department spokesman declined comment on Friday`s filings. Microsoft says the government is violating the Fourth Amendment, which establishes the right for people and businesses to know if the government searches or seizes their property, in addition
to Microsoft‘s First Amendment right to free speech. In the suit, which focuses on the storage of data on remote servers that are often referred to as “cloud” computers, Microsoft said it had been subjected to 2,600 federal court orders within the past 18 months prohibiting the company from informing customers their data was given to authorities pursuing criminal investigations. Under the authority of the 30-yearold Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), the government is increasingly directing investigations at parties that store data in the cloud, Microsoft argued in its suit. Five former law enforcement officials who worked for the FBI or Justice Department in Washington state also submitted a brief supporting Microsoft. In July, a federal appeals court sided 3-0 with Microsoft in a separate case against the Justice Department, ruling the government could not force the tech company to hand over customer emails stored on servers outside the United States.

ISIS using child rape to recruit young
ISIS terrorists are using child rape to force young soldiers to join their ranks, it has been claimed. Child soldiers are threatened with sexual assault to coerce them to join, sources have told the FNA News Agency. But when they do join up, young soldiers are filmed being raped, and told that the footage will be released if they flee the battlefield. A source in Deir ez-Zor in Syria told the agency: “The children who are sent to the warfronts are
then again raped by adult terrorists in order to prevent them from fleeing the battlefields.” The UN found in 2014 that more than 25,000 women and children had been taken captive in the region. These captives are sexually abused and sold into sex slavery, with Tunisian newspaper AlChourouk claiming each child is sold for $10,000. ‘IS attack’ foiled Counter terror officers launched an early morning raid and swooped on the pair in west London, arresting
both on suspicion of being involved in the ‘preparation of terrorist acts.’ A 19year-old was detained on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts and a 20year-old was arrested on suspicion of funding terrorism and failure to disclose information regarding an act of terrorism, Scotland Yard said. Houses in west and southwest London and the Thames Valley are being searched while vehicles in the same areas are also being inspected. The Met’s
operation today is understood to be ‘significant’ - but Scotland Yard will not release any more details at this time. MailOnline understands that the threat could have been to attack several sites across the UK - not a lone-wolf attack. The older man was also held on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism relating to a separate investigation by the South East Counter Terrorism Unit. Both suspects, from London, are in custody following a pre-planned raid on a west London address by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command and the South East Counter Terrorism Unit. Another man, aged 19, was arrested in south-east London on suspicion of a religiously aggravated offence in a separate matter and remains in custody, police said.
Netf lix behind ‘stone murder’ of German woman?
POLICE on the Danish island of Funen fear a killer who struck in the town may have been inspired by a Netflix horror series after an attack took the life of a German tourist. Police are investigating whether a stone-throwing incident that killed a German woman has any copy-cat links with the Canadian show Slasher. On August 21, a car carrying German tourists was hit by a 30kilo stone tile that had been thrown from a motorway overpass. The female passenger, 33, was killed and the 36-yearold driver was severely wounded, according to The Local. The couple’s son escaped from the incident
unharmed. “In connection with our investigation we have been made aware of a Netflix series that includes an episode in which a person throws a concrete block down on a driving car. The series is called ‘Slasher’,” Funen Police Commissioner Michael Lichtenstein told Jyllands-Posten. “A resident directed our attention to it and it can’t be ruled out that someone may have been inspired by it.” “Just like all of those people who are going around doing it may have been inspired by our current case,” he added.

Life after 9/11: NY ‘Sikh Project’ to highlight community heroes
New York A Sikh subway driver who saved countless lives by reversing a train headed for ground zero on 9/11 and a decorated SikhAmerican army veteran are among the several men and women from the community profiled in an art exhibition to showcase their perseverance in the face of backlash against them after the terror attack. As the US commemorates the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks today, the
photography exhibition ‘Sikh Project’ will run from September 17-25 here to highlight the aesthetics of the Sikh articles of faith, including the turban and beard. The exhibition is a collaboration between civil rights group ‘The Sikh Coalition’ and acclaimed British photographers Amit and Naroop. Featuring nearly 40 powerful portraits of Sikh-Americans of various ages, the exhibition will tell the story of the triumphs and
‘Epitome of evil mother’: Indian-origin step-mom starved, abused kid for a year
New York An Indian-origin woman, found guilty of brutally abusing and starving her 12-year-old stepdaughter for more than a year, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the US. Richard Brown said Ranot was the “epitome of an evil stepmother”. Not only did she refuse to provide basic nourishment for the child but also “wantonly beat and abused the girl inflicting pain still evident by the scars that mark her body today. The youngster, at 12, weighed just 58 pounds. No child deserves to be treated in this manner.” Maya’s biological father Rajesh Ranot is also charged with assault, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child and will be tried at a later date.Ranot repeatedly hit her stepdaughter on her body and face, causing bruising and severe pain.Between December 2012 and May 2014, she locked the youngster inside her bedroom and for extended periods of time refused to feed her.In one instance, Ranot kicked the girl in the face while wearing footwear, causing bruising, swelling and substantial pain on her eye and face.On another occasion, she struck Maya in the face with a wooden rolling pin causing a laceration, swelling and pain to her left cheek that required the girl to be treated at a local Queens hospital, where doctors found Maya to be underweight and thin.
perseverance of the community that has overcome great challenges in the 15 years since the attacks in 2001. Among those featured in the exhibition is Sat Hari Singh, a New York City train operator who saved countless lives on the fateful day of 9/11 when he reversed the train headed for ground zero, sending it in the opposite direction. It also features renowned SikhAmerican designer and actor Waris Ahluwalia, who was not
allowed to board a plane from Mexico City in February this year because of his turban. Also profiled in the exhibition is Ishprit Kaur, a nursing student in Connecticut, and Major Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi, a Bronze Star Medal recipient and the first Sikh American to be granted a religious accommodation to serve in the US military since the ban on Sikhs in the 1980s. Amit and Naroop, in an email response, said through the exhibition they want to “break the
ignorant stereotypes made in the US that all Sikhs look like terrorists”. The duo added that the exhibition wants to enlighten people about the Sikh faith and encourage them to embrace their identity with pride, celebrating diversity. While there are an estimated 500,000 Sikh-Americans in the US, who have been an integral part of the American fabric for generations, the first post-9/11 fatal hate crime victim was a Sikh.
Indian-American children melt hearts with poems at White House Washington An Indian-American girl attracted a sizeable audience at the White House when she narrated a poem that shared her experience as an immigrant and how it was painful to replace her mother tongue Tamil with English. Among the audience were the First Lady, Michelle Obama, who felicitated Maya Eashwaran and four others including another Indian-American Gopal Raman with the prestigious National Students Poet in recognition of their poetry skills. “I have lost more than I have ever lost in sixteen years. I have started shedding ethnicity like hair: Mother, I fear I’ll go bald,” Maya, 17, concluded reading her poetry. “Ma, I haven’t spoken (Tamil) in three years” amidst applause from the audience. She even received a shout out from the First Lady in her speech. “Maya -- where’s Maya? You put it best. These are your words, I’m told: “On the stage, there is no way to leave unnoticed. Did you say that?” the First Lady asked. Maya, born in the US to Tamil parents, nodded. “My family is Tamil. I was born here. I write a lot of my poems based on my culture, my heritage,” she told PTI after her White House event. “The poem that I actually read at the White House linguistics is based on experience of losing my mother tongue and kind of replacing it with another, which is very painful thing to imagine to go through,” she said, adding when she was in the middle school she stared getting interested in poetry. Gopal, 17, the other IndianAmerican budding poet who received national attention lives
in Dallas and is a high school student. His parents - father from Chennai and mother from Kerala – moved to the US in the 1980s. He was born here. “It (love with poetry) started in seventh grade. I had a really

So I’m feeling a little melancholy here, because this has truly been an honour and a privilege and a joy,” Michelle said. Recollecting how it all started, she said when they came here, they wanted to use “this incredible platform of the White House to inspire young people to dream really big for themselves, to think about what their lives could look like beyond what their everyday existence is like”.

Facebook co-founder pledges $20 million to Democrats for defeating Trump Washington With a new promise of $20 million to help defeat Donald Trump, billionaire Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz becomes one
of the top Democratic donors of the election. The Silicon Valley entrepreneur calls the Republican presidential candidate dangerous and divisive and says his appeal to Americans who feel left behind is “quite possibly a deliberate con”.

By contrast, Moskovitz says, Democrats and their nominee, Hillary Clinton, are “running on a vision of optimism, pragmatism, inclusiveness and mutual
benefit”. Moskovitz wrote about his planned contributions in a Thursday night posting on the website Medium titled “Compelled to Act”. Until now, Moskowitz had made only one federal campaign contribution, $5,200 in 2013 to Democrat Sean Eldridge. The husband of another Facebook co-founder, Eldridge unsuccessfully ran for a New York congressional seat. Half of the $20 million Moskovitz and his wife, Cari Tuna, are giving will go to the League of Conservation Voters and to a political action committee called For Our Future. The latter group is a get-out-the-vote effort in battleground states that is paid for primarily by labour unions and hedge fund billionaire Tom
Photos show Bill Clinton ‘friends’ with Trump, Hillary attended his wedding
Washington The Clinton Presidential Library released photos featuring former President Bill Clinton interacting jovially with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. One photo showed Clinton and Trump with their arms around two women: Melania Knauss, now Trump’s wife, and a fourth woman, identified by Politico as Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kylie Bax, wearing a T-shirt with the Playboy bunny emblazoned
across it, CNN reported on Saturday. The photographs from 2000 were released on Friday in response to a Freedom of Information Act filed by Politico magazine. Before running for president as a Republican, Trump expressed considerable admiration for the Clinton family, and they have interacted socially for decades -- most prominently, Hillary Clinton was in attendance when Trump eventually married Melania in 2005, CNN added.

Moskovitz and Tuna also are giving directly to Clinton’s campaign and to party committees helping Senate and congressional Democrats. “As a nation, we need to figure out how to bring everyone with us, and we believe the Democratic platform currently is more aligned with ensuring that happens,” he wrote. “In comparison, Donald Trump’s promises to this group are quite possibly a deliberate con, an attempt to rally energy and support without the ability or intention to deliver. His proposals are so implausible that the nation is forced to worry that his interest in the presidency might not even extend beyond winning a contest and promoting his personal brand.” Only Steyer has given more this year to Democrats, campaign finance records show. The Californian has put up almost $40 million so far, to promote environmental issues and help elect Clinton and other Democrats.
Washington Post to roll out speedy mobile news site WASHINGTON The Washington Post announced Tuesday it was rolling out a “lightning-fast” mobile news site that would provide nearinstant load times for both articles and advertising. The Post, purchased in 2013 by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, said in a statement was combining its own technology with Progressive Web Apps and the Google-led Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) technologies “to create a better user experience” for readers. The statement said the Post would be creating a “lightning-fast mobile web experience, radically enhancing its mobile news site with nearinstant load times for both content and advertising.” Load times on the new mobile site will be near-instant at less than one second, according to the statement. Ads and images will load immediately even when there is low bandwidth, spotty signals, or no Wi-Fi service, it said.
“Mobile is the future. Our goal was to create the fastest mobile news site, setting a new standard of speed,” said Shailesh
Prakash, chief technology officer for the Post. “By the end of the year, this will be our default mobile experience - one that delivers extremely fast articles and ads while protecting a user’s privacy. We’ve already seen a significant increase in engagement from users since we launched in beta and expect to see more as we expand to our entire user base.” Under Bezos, the prominent but struggling daily has upgraded its technology and boosted its digital readership as it seeks to challenge The New York Times as the country’s newspaper of record.
Indian acid attack survivor wows NY runway NEW YORK An Indian teenager who lost an eye and whose face was brutally disfigured in an acid attack walked the New York catwalk to whoops and cheers Thursday in what she called a life-changing experience.Reshma Qureshi, 19, brushed off nerves to stride the runway like a pro in a stunning cream and floral floorlength gown by Indian designer Archana Kochhar on the first official day of New York Fashion Week. “I feel really good and the experience was great,” she told AFP afterward, speaking in Hindi through a translator. “I feel as though it has definitely changed my life.” She was invited to take part by FTL Moda, a fashion production company committed to challenging industry stereotypes of beauty and which last year invited a model with Down Syndrome to take part.Qureshi, whose ambition remains to finish the last two grades of high school and go to college, said she hoped her participation would send a powerful message to other acid attack survivors.”Why should we not enjoy our lives? What happened to us is not our fault and we’ve done nothing wrong and so we should also move forward in life,” she told AFP the night before the show.Acid attacks, which overwhelmingly target women and children, are a particular scourge in Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the West Indies and the Middle East. In India, an estimated 500 to 1,000 attacks take place each year, and while they rarely kill they leave severe physical, psychological and social scars that can see victims ostracized and hidden away.Thursday’s

As slim as any professional model and with thick, luxurious hair, she appears in YouTube videos, filmed in her home base of Mumbai, and offering beauty tips and make-up advice.Just moments before hitting the catwalk she clung to the arm of a floor assistant. But with her hair swept into a chignon with a delicate headpiece, professional make-up and her model frame flattered by the curves of the gown, she quickly turned into a natural.”I want to tell the world do not see us in a weak light and see that even we can go out and do things,” she told AFP.”People have a tendency to look at acid attack survivors from one perspective and I don’t want them to look at them like that
of the show which featured evening and daywear for men and women by a handful of different designers. As much as the audience of stylists, bloggers and members of the Indian diaspora whooped and cheered, Qureshi had come across on the eve of the show as rather overwhelmed & understandably jet lagged. The daughter of a taxi driver and abroad for the first time, she was accompanied by a representative of the charity she works with, but flung into the bulb-popping, high-octane world of Manhattan fashion. She answered questions politely, saying that New York seemed “very nice” even though she had barely slept on the long, transcontinental flight and had no time to even see the skyline. But with her New York debut under her belt, she was much happier. She will walk in a second show Thursday before heading out to dinner and is keen to see as much as possible of the Big Apple.”I do feel brave,” she said.

Most humpback whales taken off US endangered species list WASHINGTON Most populations of humpback whales are no longer on the United States endangered species list thanks to
international conservation efforts, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Tuesday.Four decades of national and international initiatives to protect and conserve the marine mammals have helped nine of 14 humpback population segments rebound from historically low levels.”Today’s news is a true ecological success story,” said Eileen Sobeck, assistant NOAA administrator for fisheries.”Whales, including the humpback, serve an important role in our marine environment. Separately managing humpback whale populations that are largely independent of each
other allows us to tailor conservation approaches for each population.”After commercial whaling severely reduced populations, the US
listed all humpback whales as endangered in 1970. Today, just four whale groups remain on that list, and one is now listed as threatened. The International Whaling Commission’s whaling moratorium imposed in 1982 which remains in effect - played a crucial part in the comeback, NOAA said. The US Marine Mammal Protection Act that protects marine mammals within US waters still applies to all humpback whales, regardless of endangered status. The MMPA prohibits the killing of certain marine mammals in US waters and by US citizens on the high seas, and bans their importation into the United States. Two
How counting helps: The HIV/AIDS model
SAN FRANCISCO The CDC documented the first AIDS cases in 1981. Within three years, most state health departments required hospitals and physicians to report and name each new diagnosis. Surveillance systems soon evolved to capture each AIDSrelated death. Health officials used that information to direct resources to the hardest-hit areas and study how the disease was spreading. Officials and the public watched deaths across the country climb at an alarming rate. “AIDS was constantly increasing,” said Mervyn Silverman, San Francisco’s director of health from 1977 to 1985. “AIDS cases became a few thousand, then 20,000, and it scared the hell out of people.” Activism swelled, helping to attract millions of dollars for public education campaigns and
drug development. The number of infections peaked at about 78,000 in 1993 and then rapidly fell. In 1995, as new, effective drug treatments became available, the number of deaths peaked at about 53,000. In 2013, the latest year for which numbers are available, about 13,000 people died with AIDS. So far, drug-resistant infections haven’t prompted anything like that sort of broad mobilization. Consider that for the current year, Congress allocated $7.7 billion to fight AIDS, including $789 million to the CDC for prevention and research. For antibiotic-resistant infections, which kill tens of thousands of people a year, this year’s total allocation came to $1 billion. Of that, $160 million in new money goes to the CDC, which until last year didn’t even have a line item in its budget for fighting drug-resistant infections.
separate regulatory decisions filed Tuesday maintain protection for whales living off Hawaii and Alaska by “specifying distance limits for approaching vessels.”Two of the four humpback groups still considered endangered can be found in US waters at some times of the year. The Central American population looks for food in the Pacific Ocean off the US West Coast, while the group in the Pacific Northwest spends time in the Bering Sea and near the Aleutian Islands. The humpback group from Mexico now listed as threatened regularly goes to the West Coast of the continental United States and Alaska. In 2010, NOAA launched an extensive review of the status of humpback whales that resulted in the reclassification of the species into 14 distinct populations.NOAA proposed last year to remove 10 of those 14 groups off the endangered list and gave the public 90 days to comment on the proposed change before finalizing its decision. Humpback whales can grow to 60 feet (18 meters) and live 50 years. They weigh up to 40 tons and eat tiny crustaceans called krill, often as much as 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms) per day.The NOAA announcement follows US President Barack Obama’s establishment of the world’s largest marine reserve, home to thousands of rare sea creatures in the northwestern Hawaiian islands.
Nurse kissed in iconic World War II photo dies
WASHINGTON Greta Friedman, who claimed she was the woman kissed by a sailor in an iconic picture taken in New York’s Times Square at the end of World War II, died yesterday, American media reported.Joshua Friedman, her son, said Greta died of pneumonia at an assisted living home in Virginia. She was 92. The black and white image of a woman and an American sailor was shot by the renowned photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt on August 14, 1945, after the news of Japan’s surrender effectively heralded the end of World War II, The New York Times reported. At the time, the photograph - that captured a defining moment of the 20th century - ran on a full page in Life magazine.“My mom had so many stories and so many experiences; this was just one of many,” Friedman told CNN about the iconic photo. For many years, no one really knew who the two people in the photograph were. Over the years, several women came out claiming
they were the ones in the photograph.“The Kissing Sailor”, a 2012 book by George Galdorisi and Lawrence Verria, claimed to confirm the names of the worldfamous couple from 1945. The book identified Greta as the woman and one George Mendonsa, as the sailor. “We’ve proven this basically three different ways -- through forensic analysis, through photographic interpretation and through some other technical means that these are the people,” 10news.com quoted co-author Galdorisi as saying in 2012.

France arrests teenager for planning 55 arrested after trying to stop Sikh-Muslim wedding at gurdwara ‘violent’ attack in Paris: Sources Paris A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in Paris suspected of preparing imminent “violent action”, two judicial sources said, the second alleged plot with links to Islamic State discovered in France this week. Last Sunday, a car loaded with gas cylinders was found near
Notre Dame cathedral and jerry cans of diesel, leading to the discovery of a plot to attack a Paris railway station under the direction of Islamic State. Seven people, including four women, were arrested.
The boy had been under house arrest since France declared a state emergency after November 13 attacks in Paris in which Islamic State militants killed 130 people, two sources said on condition of anonymity. They did not say why he was under house arrest. His arrest on Saturday came as
he was planning an attack in a public place in the French capital, one of the sources said. The second source said the boy had been in contact with suspected French Islamist militant Rashid Kassim and that

Kassim also guided one of the women arrested last week in the plot to attack a train station in Paris. French newspaper Le Monde reported that Kassim is in Syria. He has used Telegram, the messaging service, to call for more attacks in France. “Women, sisters, go on, attack. Where are the brothers?...She brandished a knife and she hit a policeman...Where are the men?” Le Monde quoted a message of Kassim on Telegram. One of the women, arrested on Thursday, stabbed a police officer during her arrest on Thursday before being shot and wounded. One of the women, who was arrested with her partner on a motorway on Tuesday , Ornella G, was formally placed under investigation on Saturday in connection with the car found last Sunday near Notre Dame cathedral. The man was freed on Saturday. One of the sources said Kassim, 29, inspired two men who carried out an attack in July in a French church during which they slit the throat of the elderly priest. The attack shocked France, coming less than 12 days after another Islamic State militant drove a truck into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice.
LONDON Police arrested 55 people in the British town of Leamington Spa following an eight-hour protest at a gurdwara about an inter-faith wedding that was to take place on September 11. According to news reports, the protestors, some with “bladed weapons”, entered the Gurdwara Sahib to stop the wedding of a SikhMuslim couple. There have reportedly been tensions in the community over the last couple of years about permissions being granted to conduct interfaith weddings at the gurdwara. Two groups Sikh 2 Inspire and Sikh Youth UK said they were merely staging a peaceful protest. They claim the wedding violated a consensus in the community to not allow Gurdwaras to host interfaith marriages. Warwickshire police said that “a
significant number of bladed weapons were seized from the scene”. It said the “blades seized so far have been ceremonial” but that “another non-ceremonial weapon was seized”. Nobody was injured in the incident but they were treating the incident as an “aggravated trespass”, pending investigation, believing it to be an escalation of an ongoing dispute. The Guardian said it was the third or fourth time in recent months that a group of men had attempted to gain entry to the Gurdwara over the issue of mixed marriages. The gurdwara committee’s decision to call the police and the subsequent arrests have sparked sharp reactions on social media. Some backed the protests on religious grounds while others strongly objected to disrupting mixed marriages.

London Harnaam Kaur, who has entered the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest female with a full beard, is delighted with the title and says it is “absolutely humbling” to be included in the 2017 edition. Based in Slough, Berkshire, Kaur’s inclusion in the Guinness Book was announced on Wednesday by the organisers along with other new records. Kaur, who has been in the news in the British media in recent years, has polycystic ovary syndrome. This causes her body to produce more male hormones, which can trigger the growth of excess body hair. She says she has been the subject of bullying due to the condition. But the condition has not dampened her spirits - she has appeared as a catwalk model and body image activist and campaigns against bullying. Guinness World Records said: “Now with a beard measuring as long as six inches in places, she overcame years of bullying to take ownership of her appearance and achieve this record title at the age of 24 years

‘Fearless’ 6-yr-old Indian girl tries to China completes 20,000 km of bulstop axe-wielding robber in New Zealand let train network - world’s longest Melbourne A six-year-old Indian girl has won praise for her brave attempt at stopping an axe-wielding robber, who attacked an employee at her father’s store in New Zealand in a burglary.
Sarah Patel was captured on CCTV trying to defend the staff member when a group of six armed men broke into the family’s electronics shop in Auckland on Monday. The footage shows the masked men kicking, punching and threatening employees with an axe and a crowbar, or iron lever, and smashing cabinets and stealing thousands of dollars worth of electronics. Patel, who was caught up in the violent drama, is seen in the
video rushing towards one of the attackers standing over an employee with an axe, and tries to get him to stop his attack. The girl grabbed onto the leg of the man during the armed incident that ended in a dramatic
police chase from the North Shore to west Auckland. She told the New Zealand Herald she was “trying to save” the employee and that she “wasn’t scared” of the bad guy. When Patel saw the attacker’s axe, she fled. She later helped her grandfather out of the room and away from danger. Her father Suhail Patel told TVNZ he was “proud” of his daughter and though she had been shaken by the incident, she was recovering well.
“Last night she was very upset. Was in shock. We’ve been trying to say to her ‘You’re the bravest girl’, that sort of thing,” he said. Suhail said his daughter was extremely brave facing up to the man as he was holding what appeared to be a small axe. “I’m proud of her, definitely.” The proud father added his daughter was “always trying to help people” and he was not surprised she sprung into action. The video shows her being shoved aside by the man and then helped up by her grandfather. Patel’s mother Nashrin said her daughter initially thought the attacker was her father. After the intruders fled, they were pursued across West Auckland by police as well as Patel, her mother and grandfather, who chased the attacker in their family car. They were eventually stopped by police road spikes laid out for them. Five 16-year-old boys have been charged with aggravated robbery, injuring with intent and breaching bail. A sixth suspect is still to be found. Several newspapers around the world today reported Patel’s “astonishing bravery”, calling her “fearless”.
Beijing China’s high-speed railway completed over 20,000 km of track in the country on Saturday, becoming world’s longest bullet train network. A high-speed railway line linking Zhengzhou in China’s central Henan Province with Xuzhou in eastern Jiangsu Province was opened on Saturday. With the operation of the new line, China’s high-speed railway lines have exceeded 20,000 km in total length, the world’s longest. The 360-km line connects highspeed railway in the west with
two major north-south lines. The travel time between Xi’an and Shanghai is cut to six hours from nearly 11 hours. The line has nine stations and trains run at a speed of up to 300 kph. Construction of the line started in December 2012 and testing started in April 2016. China is competing with Japan to market bullet train network in India and various other countries. While Japan bagged the contract to build Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed train, China is conducting feasibility study to build a bullet train track between Chennai and New Delhi.

months after the operation, the blonde, blue-eyed mother of two appeared before TV cameras wearing a black top and pink cardigan. She appeared to be wearing thick makeup to disguise the scars of the procedure. Her lips were heavy and inflexible, and she spoke with a pronounced lisp but was otherwise comprehensible. She recounted how she had fainted after “taking medicines to forget” personal problems. “When I woke up, I tried to light a cigarette and I couldn’t

Then I saw the pool of blood and the dog next to me,” she said. “I went to look in the mirror and was horrified.” But the ground-breaking operation gave her a new lease of life.“Since my operation I have a face, like everyone... I will be able to resume a normal life,” the divorcee said. The operation was led by Jean-Michel Dubernard, a world-renowned surgeon at Edouard Herriot hospital in the eastern city of Lyon, and Devauchelle, a professor of facial surgery. Dubernard had performed the world’s first hand transplant in September 1998, followed by the first double hand and forearm transplant in January 2000.The transplant team came under fire from within the French medical profession for releasing post-operation pictures of the patient.
Japanese man, 73, French woman who received first completes record swim face transplant dies after ‘long illness’
TOKYO A Japanese man aged 73 became the world’s oldest person to swim across the country’s Tsugaru Strait on Wednesday, supporters said, braving unpredictable currents and stinging jellyfish in his quest. Toshio Tominaga’s record bid saw him spend about 10 hours swimming across the channel in northern Japan that is considered one of the world’s most difficult because of strong and unpredictable currents, his supporters said. The strait is only 19.5 kilometres (12 miles) wide at its narrowest point, but Tominaga ended up swimming 38 kilometres, ploughing northward as he battled currents moving eastward, support team member Masayuki Moriya said. Tominaga “is so exhausted that he needs to rest”, Moriya told AFP minutes after the achievement. Organisers had expected he would have to swim for about 12 hours, covering 45 kilometres, but currents were weaker than forecast for much of the journey, Moriya said. “Until the last five kilometres it looked easy for him but the final
leg was very hard with strong currents,” he added. The septuagenarian began his swim at 5:28 am Wednesday (2028 GMT Tuesday). Nine hours and 58 minutes later, he arrived on the other side of the strait, supporters announced on Facebook.“He became the world’s oldest” person to accomplish the feat, the post said.Marathon swimmers usually attempt Tsugaru as part of their bid to complete the world’s “Oceans Seven” longdistance swims, along with the English Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar and four others, according to the World Open Water Swimming Association. In the past, swimmers have encountered sharks and fended off jellyfish and squid to complete the crossing, a feat first accomplished by US athlete David Yudovin in 1990. In 2012 American woman Pat Gallant-Charette became the oldest person to swim across Tsugaru at 61.Last month 18year-old Japanese swimmer Honoka Hasegawa became the youngest person and the fastest woman to cross the strait.

involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, has been absolved by Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency which says no allegation has been proved against him. Sufayan Zafar was accused of providing Rs 14,800 for the Mumbai attacks and paying Rs 3.98 million to another accused, Shahid Jameel Riaz, before the assault. “The FIA has found no evidence against Zafar during investigation,” said an official of the FIA. He said the allegation that Zafar had financed one of the arrested suspects in the Mumbai
Women behind foiled terror attack in France ‘guided’ by IS from Syria
Paris The women behind a foiled attack in Paris were guided by the Islamic State group from Syria, the city’s prosecutor said on Friday. “The terrorist organisation uses not only women, but young women, who get to know them and develop their plot from a distance,” Francois Molins told a news conference. A failed attack involving a car loaded with gas canisters near Notre Dame Cathedral was spearheaded by a group of women that included a 19-yearold whose written pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State group was found by police. Molins spoke a day after three women were arrested, including
a teen whose father owned the car that contained cylinders of gas. No detonators were in the car, discovered on Sunday morning. One of the women detained in a police raid over a failed attack near Notre Dame Cathedral was engaged separately to two French extremists who themselves carried out deadly attacks this year, Molins said. Molins said the woman was engaged to Larossi Abballa, who killed two police officials in Magnanville in June and filmed the aftermath on Facebook Live before dying in a police raid. He said she was also betrothed to Adel Kermiche, who slit the throat of an elderly French priest during morning Mass in July.
case could not be proved after a thorough investigation. The official said: “Zafar’s role in providing finances to Mumbai attacks suspects has not been established.” The official said Zafar would not be chargesheeted in court. “FIA will submit a challan in the trial court in this regard on the next hearing on September 22 but will not frame charges against him,” the official said. Zafar was hiding after being declared a proclaimed offender or fugitive in the Mumbai attacks case. He was arrested early last month from his hideout in KyberPakhtunkhwa province. A resident of Gujranwala district of Punjab province, 80 km from Lahore, Zafar was among 21 absconding suspects wanted in the high-profile case. The prime suspect – Lashkar-eTaiba operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, believed to be the mastermind of the Mumbai attacks – has been in hiding after getting bail more than a year ago. Six more suspects – Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jameel Riaz, Jamil Ahmed and Younus Anjum – are being held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since 2009 after being charged with abetment of murder, attempted murder, and planning and executing the Mumbai attacks.
Pakistan can’t ‘pick and choose’ terror groups to go after: US
Washington The US on Thursday said Pakistan cannot “pick and choose” the terrorist groups it goes after and has to target militants taking refuge on its territory who seek to harm its neighbours. The US also rejected Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s remarks that America and India have joined hands against the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which runs through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The remarks by deputy spokesperson Mark Toner in his daily press briefing were in response to a question on Saeed’s remarks in the wake of India asking Pakistan to hand him over or do something about these attacks. “... I would dismiss it (Saeed’s comments) outright,” he said. “We have a strong bilateral relationship with Pakistan, but one that is premised on counterterrorism cooperation...,” he added. “We made it very clear that Pakistan can’t pick and
choose which terrorist groups it goes after and it has to go after those groups that seek to do harm to its neighbours and may seek refuge on Pakistani soil.” The US had earlier said it is in constant “conversation” with the Pakistani leadership on the threats posed by terror organisations like the Haqqani network and the Lashkar-eTayyiba operating in the region. The dreaded Haqqani network, which is blamed for several deadly attacks on Indian interests in Afghanistan including the 2008 bombing of the Indian mission in Kabul that killed 58 people, has also carried out a number of kidnappings and attacks against US interests in that country, the Afghan government and civilian targets. US defence secretary Ashton Carter had refused to give the necessary Congressional certification to Pakistan and blocked military aid worth $300 million to Islamabad for not taking sufficient action against the Haqqani network.
Thousands protest in Mexico against gay marriage legalization Mexico City Thousands of people marched throughout Mexico Saturday to protest President Enrique Pena Nieto’s initiative to legalize gay marriage. The National Front for the Family -- a coalition of conservative religious groups -called for the protests, and is also planning a mass march for September 24 in Mexico City. “Long live the family, in the image of the Virgin Mary, the baby Jesus and Saint Joseph,” read one sign at the protest in the city of Puebla, the capital of a central Mexican state with a strong Catholic presence. “Papa + Mama = Happy Family,” read another sign at that protest, where many of the protesters dressed in white and carried pink, blue and white-colored balloons. Some 5,000 people marched in Veracruz, where some engaged in verbal clashes with gay rights counter-protestors.Thousands of people of various religious denominations also turned out to protest in the streets of the northern border city Ciudad Juarez. In May Pena Nieto announced a constitutional

Pak PM Sharif’s family employs 300 Indians, alleges opposition leader Qadris Lahore [Pakistan] Tahirul Qadri, chairman of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chairman has alleged that Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz
Sharif’s family has employed 300 Indians in their sugar mills. Qadri on Friday unveiled a list of 50 Indians who have been allegedly working in sugar mills owned by the Sharif brothers. “They are part of some 300 Indians working in the sugar mills on a police reporting-free, multiple-entry visas,” the Express Tribune quoted Qadri as saying at the PAT Model Town secretariat.Maintaining that the Indians were issued visas on letterheads issued by the sugar mills owned by the Sharifs, he said that the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi was
instructed to give the Indians visas that exempt them from reporting to the police. “Exemption from police reporting is given in very high-profile cases.
But these Indians, who have been given visas are engineers, welders, technicians and IT experts. Are all such experts not available in Pakistan? Either all Pakistanis should be allowed to import workers from India or the Sharifs should be questioned on this?” he added. However, he expressed fear that some of them could be Indian spies.“It is not written on the forehead of anybody that he is a spy. It wasn’t written on Kulbhushan Yadav’s forehead that he was a spy. If they are not spies then why have they been exempted from police reporting and why
have customs officials not been given permission to search their luggage,” he questioned. Qadri declared that in the next episode, he would share the names and passports of other Indians. The PAT chief even claimed that he has spoken to the Indian’s working there. “Rules are the same in India and Pakistan. If anybody from the two countries has to travel to the other country, they have to report to police. I spoke about Indians working in Sharifs’ sugar mills in Rawalpindi and nobody dared to rebut it, which shows whatever I said was true. They are slaughtering national sovereignty and should be questioned,” he said.Qadri demanded that the Sharifs and their ministers should be arrested and then interrogated.Meanwhile, responding to Qadri’s allegations, Sharif Group of Industries Managing Director Yousaf Abbas Sharif said that not a single Indian was working in the sugar mill.He pointed out that currently, 1,100 plus employees were employed at the mills, but none of them are foreigners. “Tahirul Qadri is a proven liar. We are sending him a defamation notice and will take him to court,” Yousaf said.

Besides “splendiferous”, Dahlinspired vocabulary in the new edition includes an updated entry for the word “gremlins”, the meddlesome imps that sabotaged airplanes in Dahl’s first children’s book in 1943, and “human bean” – a humorous alteration or mispronunciation of human being. “Other horrors created by Dahl including snozzcumbers, the cannibalistic Bloodbottler, and the ferocious Vermicious Knid remain confined to the Dahl universe ... for now,” Jonathan Dent, the dictionary’s senior assistant editor, wrote on its website.
Washington Pakistan came very close to being declared a state sponsor of terrorism in the 1990s, a CIA operative once posted as the station chief in Islamabad said during a hearing on Capitol Hill, home to US legislature which has actively considered that option in recent months. Richard Grenier, the retired CIA operative, told the Senate’s foreign relations committee on Thursday that while he was posted to Islamabad on loan to the state department, an “annual terrorism review…nearly resulted in Pakistan’s being placed on the formal list of state sponsors of terrorism”.That would have been devastating for Pakistan, if it had indeed been put on the US list that currently has Iran, Syria and Sudan; past entries on the list were North Korea, Iraq, South Yemen, Libya and Cuba. Inclusion in the list would have meant an end to all aid and assistance at the very least. Islamabad escaped then, Grenier didn’t go into the details of it, and became a major beneficiary of US aid, both security and humanitarian, which has come under withering scrutiny in recent months, specially at the hands of lawmakers.“We have this policy where in effect we are working with Pakistan and yet the extreme duplicity that exists with the relationship is that on one
Never called Obama ‘son of a bitch’, Ban Ki-moon a ‘fool’, says Duterte
Jakarta Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte told Barack Obama he never called him a “son of a bitch” , he said on Friday, but he maintained a defiant stance on his war on drugs, saying UN chief Ban Ki-moon was a fool for bringing up human rights. US President Obama cancelled a planned meeting with Duterte at this week’s Asean summit in Laos after the Philippine leader’s alleged insult in his native Tagalog, but the two met briefly later as they waited to take their seats at a banquet. While on a visit to the Indonesian capital on Friday, Duterte told a group of Filipinos that the slur was not directed at the US president and that he had told him so. “I was ready (for Obama). I was waiting for Obama to respond. Lawyer to lawyer, we are both
lawyers anyway...I said I never made the statement. Check it out...I said that, but not in relation to Obama,” he said. “I’m not fighting with America.” Obama and Duterte shook hands and had a brief chat on Wednesday, officials said, easing the standoff. Duterte had his outburst on Monday when he was defending his war on drugs that has killed at least 2,400 Filipinos. Duterte on Friday said he thought UN Secretary-General Ban a fool for bringing up the issue of human rights violations weeks before the summit in Laos. “Even Ban Ki-moon weighed in,” Duterte said. “Also gave a statement before, several weeks ago, about the human rights violation. Sabi ko, isa ka pang tarantado (You are another fool).”

lawmakers went much further. “If our current efforts in Pakistan are not producing the results we seek then what are our options,” Representative Matt Salmon, a Republican, had said, adding, “We could simply turn the money off … we could enforce sanctions or declare Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism.” Lawmakers at the senate hearing on Thursday said they were equally frustrated –Corker used the word “duplicitous” or a variation of it for Pakistan a few times – but he also conceded, agreeing with experts deposing at the hearing, that the “relationship with Pakistan is important”.

Al-Qaida claims ex-Pak Army chief’s son exchanged for Zawahiri’s daughters WASHINGTON The terrorist group al-Qaida has said it extracted the release of two daughters of its chief Ayman al-Zawahiri and the widow of slain 9/11 planner in exchange for the kidnapped son of former Pakistan army chief Pervez Ashfaq Kayani. The claim was made late August on the front page of the al-Qaida online magazine Al Masra and reported in the US-based Long War Journal on Friday. The magazine said it had also beheaded a Pakistani spy who had led its “apostate” army to the three women, who it said have been sent back to Egypt after the prisoner exchange.Although news of the detention of Zawahiri’s daughters in Pakistan has been in the cybersphere for some time, there has been no hint that Kayani’s son Sarosh had been kidnapped to secure their release. Instead, recent developments centered around the kidnapping of Ali Gilani, son of the former Pakistan PM Yousuf Raza Gilani, who spoke after his rescue by US and Afghan forces of attempts to swap him for the release of some al-Qaida operatives’ womenfolk. It now turns out that the women may have been Zawahiri’s daughters Fatima and Umaymah, who were leaving

The language of the claims suggests that the Pakistani military has been hand and glove with al-Qaida, as has been long suspected, and that the two sides have lines of

While the Journal said it cannot substantiate the Kayani exchange with independent evidence, it said the tactic is entirely consistent with Qaida’s past schemes.Indeed, kidnapping Pakistani elites for ransom and prisoner exchange has been a fairly common occurrence in Pakistan. Pathankot attack: Pakistani Senator accuses Sharif government of patronising terrorists
Lahore Vindicating India’s stand on involvement of Pakistani establishment behind Pathankot attack in January this year, a senior Pakistani Senator accused the Nawaz Sharif government of patronising terrorists. PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar on Friday put the government in the dock over Pathankot attack.Babar accused the Sharif government of misleading the upper house by deliberately concealing information about the terror attack in which three security personnel lost their lives while six Pakistani terrorists were killed. WHAT DID PPP SENATOR SAY? “Why else did the government not share details of the investigation into the alleged involvement of Pakistani nationals in the Pathankot attack
with the House,” Babar asked. The PPP leader further said, “Has the Indian government provided any facts or information to the Pakistani government? And, what is the latter doing in this regard?” SHARIF BUCKLES UNDER PRESSURE The questions asked by PPP Senator Babar were not answered by the government. Babar had raised these questions four months ago as well. He lashed out at the government for deferring the questions each time he raised. Under pressure from the opposition and cornered by India, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif later announced that the Pathankot probe report would be made public. Inside Senate, Minister of State for Interior and Narcotics Balighur Rehman denied hiding any information from the House.
recent entry in the country’s kidnapping hall of fame is Shahbaz Taseer, son of former Punjab governor Salman Taseer Invariably, details of their “rescue” or release are shrouded in mystery. Kayani’s son Sarosh is listed as an executive at the Fauji Fertiliser Company, a military enterprise that is largely a sinecure for a rapacious army which has turned itself into a business enterprise milking the state into penury. Although Kayani came into the army from humble origins (his father was a junior commissioned officer), like most Pakistani generals he retired a wealthy man thanks to the licence the country’s military has to dip into the coffers. Kayani’s brother Kamran Kayani is now an absconder in the 17 billion rupee defence housing land scandal and he is being investigated by National Accountability Bureau, according to the Pakistan media. Typically, the Pakistani media discovers only after they retire that army chiefs like Pervez Musharraf and Kayani have fattened themselves at the expense of the country. The media is currently glorifying General Raheel Sharif, due to retire in November, amid reports that he will be made a “Field Marshal” in addition to the chest full of medals he is already weighed down with.
9/11 attacker Mohammed Atta’s mother believes he is alive in Guantanamo Madrid The mother of Mohammed Atta, one of the kamikaze hijackers who destroyed the World Trade Center, says she believes her son is alive at the US prison in Guantanamo Bay, in an interview published Sunday in Spain. Bozaina Mohamed Mustafa Sheraqi told daily newspaper El Mundo that Atta -- one of the masterminds behind the September 11, 2001 attacks -was the victim of an elaborate US plot and had done nothing wrong. “He is alive and this is the message I send my son. I think he is in Guantanamo. Son, I want to see you before I die. I am 74 and I live with the hope that you have survived. I know you never did anything wrong and you never could have done what they say you did,” she told the newspaper by telephone from Cairo where she lives with her two daughters. The United States “is hiding the truth. They are the ones who designed this attack to spread the idea that Islam is terrorism. They selected people with Arab passports to blame them and, at the same time, our nations and divide us,” she added. The newspaper said it was the first interview which Bozaina has granted since 9/11.
Atta’s family has long claimed they believe he had nothing to
war and demanded $5,000 (5,600 euros) for a televised
with the attacks and was alive. After Mohammed Atta was first identified as one of the 19 hijackers of 9/11, his late father --- a lawyer also named Mohammed who died in 2008 - flatly denied it, even claiming his son had phoned him from an undisclosed location the day after the attack. But after the 2005 bombings of three London subway trains and a bus, the elder Atta appeared to have accepted the loss of his son. When a CNN producer talked to him shortly after the London bombings, he boasted that his son’s heroism had marked the advent of a 50-year religious
interview. He said the money would go towards funding another attack in London. CNN declined the interview but reported the conversation on its website.

Rohit, Shikhar retained as India announce BCCI yet to adhere to Lodha squad for New Zealand Test series Panel’s recommendations for
New Delhi Outgoing chairman of selectors Sandeep Paril has refrained from making any major changes to the 15-member squad which will play three Tests against the touring New Zealand side from September 22. Stuart Binny and Shardul Thakur were the only notable omissions to the side which toured West Indies. The selection committee meeting which was held in Mumbai on Monday was also attended by skipper Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble. “We had discussions with both Anil and Virat and we all felt that the team had done well in the Caribbean and there was no need of making any major changes to the side,” Patil said after the meeting.
Ahead of the meeting there was speculation over Rohit Sharma’s place in the side over his inconsistent form. Patil though doused the speculation. “We felt that Rohit never got an extended run. He would get one game to play and then be on the bench for the next few,” Patil said. Patil who’s tenure is set to end later this month, reflected on his four-year tenure and admitted there were many tough decisions which the panel had to deal with. Asked if there was truth to reports that he had signalled batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar to make announce his retirement, Patil refrained from commenting, stating that the committee was answerable to the BCCI and that some aspects
Chris Gayle backs MS Dhoni to remain as India’s limited-overs skipper
New Delhi Wading into the raging debate over whether Mahendra Singh Dhoni should step aside from captaincy, West Indies batting superstar Chris Gayle has thrown his weight behind the Indian limited-overs skipper, saying that he will only take that call if he desires to do so.Calls for Dhoni
to hand over the reins of the limited-overs formats to Virat Kohli began to gain strength following the latter’s continuing success as Test skipper. The explosive batsman, however, believes that Dhoni still has the potential to take India to greater heights. “MS Dhoni will only step aside when he feels like, no one can tell him to leave,” Gayle told ANI in an exclusive interview. Commenting on the possibility of his return to the traditional five-day format, the 36-year-old southpaw insisted that “I will be looking to comeback to play in the 50-over and Test matches. That is definitely on the cards.”
should remain confidential. The BCCI has already sent out notices asking for fresh applications for the various posts of selectors. Addressing the issue, BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke said that the decision was made to bring in transparency and offer all alternatives. Asked why the BCCI decided to impose a 60year age limit on the post, Shirke clarified that it was done as they felt older representatives might not have seen a lot Twenty20 cricket. “The decision was done as gentlemen who are above 65 might not have seen as much Twenty20 cricket or even one-day cricket,” Shirke said. Squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Virat Kohli (captain), Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wicketkeeper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
selection process
New Delhi While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is taking all efforts for transparent functioning, it is not clear whether they are taking into considerations the recommendations laid down by the Lodha Committee which they have to implement by end of year. The BCCI on Saturday put up several criteria on its website while inviting applications for the senior, junior and women’s selection committees. For the first time in the history of Indian cricket, selection committees will be formed via personal interviews. However, the BCCI defied the Lodha Committee’s recommendations as far as the formation of selection committees is concerned. The BCCI’s criteria for senior selection panel is: “He
or she should have represented the Indian team either in a Test match or a one-day international or more than 50 First Class matches in India”, whereas the Lodha panel has recommended only “former Test players” for the senior men’s selection committee and “former India international cricketers” to be a part of the senior women’s national team. There is no provision for first class cricketers in the Lodha Committee’s recommendations in any senior selection committees. In case of junior
selection committee, the BCCI has gone a step further than the Lodha recommendation. The BCCI has stated that the candidate should have played “more than 50 First Class matches” in India to be considered for this appointment. However, the Lodha recommendation eligibility is “minimum 25 First Class matches”. As per the Lodha report, the junior selection panel is part of the junior cricket committee that will do also select coaches, support staff members and conducting tournaments.
US Open 2016: Stanislas Wawrinka defeats defending champion Novak Djokovic in four sets to clinch third Grand Slam title New York Stan Wawrinka became the oldest US Open men‘s champion in 46 years when he defeated world number one Novak Djokovic to claim a third Grand Slam title on Sunday. Wawrinka, the 31-year-old third seed, triumphed 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 after almost four hours of high intensity tennis. He even held his nerve when the final threatened to erupt into controversy after Djokovic twice called medical timeouts in the fourth set. Wawrinka is the oldest winner of the men‘s tournament since 35-yearold Ken Rosewall in 1970 and the first over 30 to take the title since Pete
Sampras in 2002. It was the Swiss player‘s first New York title, following his breakthrough 2014 Australian Open triumph and 2015 Roland Garros crown. On both those occasions, Djokovic had been the fall-guy, losing in Melbourne in the quarterfinals and ending as runner-up in Paris. “Novak,
you`re a great champion and a great person and because of you I`m where I am today. I`d like to congratulate you on everything you have done,” said Wawrinka who has now won his last 11 finals. “This is amazing. I came here without the goal of winning it but just to step on the court trying to win.
“My goal is to give everything I have to be the best I can.” Djokovic, the 2011 and 2015 champion, had been seeking a third Slam of the year and 13th major of his career. But the 29-year-old Serb finished runner-up in New York for the fourth time after paying a heavy price for converting just three of 17 break points. Wawrinka, who had to save a match point to beat unheralded Dan Evans in the third round, committed 51 unforced errors but crucially smashed 46 winners past his opponent. “Stan, you absolutely deserved to win. You were the more courageous player in the decisive moment and you deserve this title,” said Djokovic.

British MP Keith Vaz’s wife says she’ll forgive him for cheating London The wife of Indian-origin British MP Keith Vaz has said she will forgive him for cheating on her with rent boys, and admitted the revelation that her husband of 23 years paid male prostitutes for sex had come “out of the blue” and was a “complete shock”. Maria Fernandes, a successful lawyer and part-time judge, said that she had decided to give the high-profile former minister a second chance, but warned he needs to change or “I’ll sling him out”. Vaz, 59, who has two children with Fernandes, quit as chairman of the influential House of Commons Home Affairs Committee after becoming embroiled in a scandal. Fernandes told The Mail on Sunday the revelation that her husband of 23 years paid two male prostitutes for sex had come “out of the blue” and was a “complete shock”. She said the Leicester East MP begged for forgiveness, saying he was “very sorry” and promising it would “never happen again” after he broke the news to her before the scandal was reported in the press.
in the Sunday Mirror. Vaz had a conversation regarding cocaine with one of the male escorts in which the MP said he did not want to use the drug but indicated that he would pay for it for the other man at a later date, according to the newspaper. Fernandes, who was told about the situation before the story broke, said she told the couple’s 19-yearold daughter about it but their 21-year-old son was on holiday in Vietnam and did not find out for a further 24 hours. Fernandes said their daughter was “very angry with her father, and I think she was angry for me” but she was also “worried about him”. She added that over the next few days she experienced a range of
emotions following her husband’s “betrayal”. “I would have liked to have taken all my crockery and broken it on his head,” she said. “My immediate thought was to tell him to leave then have space to discuss things, But I have decided to forgive him. That’s different to forgiving him right now. If I don’t forgive him eventually, it is going to tear me up. It’s going to destroy me and I don’t want that. I don’t like that feeling of anger and bitterness,” she noted, the The Mail on Sunday reported. Fernandes said they would go to marriage guidance sessions and he would need a full health check after having unprotected sex. She said she also feared for Vaz’s mental health: “He wanted to kill himself twice - once as Europe minister (when he was caught up in a scandal over passports) - and again now. He just wanted to die.” She added: “We have been happily married for a long time, we have two beautiful children, and we have a good life together, and he has threatened that by his behaviour. And if he does that again, then I’ll sling him out.”

When they did not allow us, a large number of people entered the house forcibly and found the skeleton on the bed. The room was shabby, dark and dirty,” he said, adding that the police were informed then. The house is situated on large land and far from the main road. In June last year, police had found a man living with the skeletons of his sister and two dogs in his house at posh Robinson Street in Kolkata.

Cop shoots dog after it bites him, Maneka Gandhi seeks report
Lucknow Union minister of women and child development Maneka Gandhi has sought a detailed report from the station officer at the Chinhat police station in Lucknow after a subinspector on Sunday shot at a stray dog which had bitten him. According to reports, sub-inspector Mahendra Pratap, a resident of Adarsh Nagar in Chinhat was heading for Barabanki for his duty when the dog bit him. The enraged cop returned home, picked up his licensed rifle and shot at the dog. As news of the shooting and the local police’s refusal to file a case against the cop spread, animal right activists demanded action. Kamna Pandey, co-opt member of Animal Welfare Board of India complained to Maneka Gandhi, who then sought a detailed report from the
officer at the Chinhat police post. The condition of the animal was not known as it was not seen in the area after the incident. “This is a serious case in which police must act against the subinspector. Despite taking up the matter with the SO, no FIR has been lodged. They claim the dog was not killed but ran away from the area,” Pandey said. “What if the bullet had hit some passer-by? What will happen if the dog is killed? As far as I am concerned, it seems to be a revengeful act. I have learnt that Maneka Gandhi has sought a detailed report. I will also send her a report to create pressure on police to file an FIR,” said Pandey. But station officer at the Chinhat police station, Surendra Katiyar insists there was no complaint against the sub inspector.
Two sons kept mother’s First openly gay Miss America contestant eliminated from competition body in house for 9 months
Haringhata Two men kept their mother’s body in their house at Simhat in Nadia district for almost nine months and the skeleton was recovered on Sunday, police said. Arun Saha (65) and Ajit Saha (55), both unmarried, told police that their mother Nani Bala Saha died on January 16 at the age of 85, and they could not take the body for cremation as it was very cold then. “We thought of taking the body to the crematorium a few days later. But later, maggots formed in the body and it was not taken for cremation,” the elder brother said. Locals said the brothers did not interact much with the neighbours. Enquired about the woman’s health, they would say she was ill and sleeping but no one was allowed to go inside their house. A few days back, Rupak Adhikari, a
included contestants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. One of them will have their
lives changed forever, and receive a $50,000 scholarship. “It’s such an honor to be able to walk on that stage and be recognized for doing something I love,” said Miss Tennessee Grace Burgess after winning the first night’s preliminary talent contest by singing The Eagles’ hit “Desperado.” She is one of six contestants who improved their chances for the finale by winning preliminary contests. Health Attention working ladies! Air pollution can Weight gain can hamper increase diabetes risk your professional career
London Are you looking for a job in the service sector? If yes, then watch your weight as researchers have found that an increase in weight had a negative impact on female candidates in their job prospects. The study found out that women faced weightbased prejudice at the workplace even when their body mass index (BMI) is within the healthy range. One of the researchers Dennis Nickson, Professor at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland said “Many
organisations in the service sector, such as shops, bars and hotels, seek to employ people with the right ‘look’ which will fit with their corporate image”. He also added that the study showed that women, even within a medically-healthy BMI range, still face discrimination in service sector employment. In the study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, participants were asked to rate people for theirsuitability for jobs in the service sector, based on their appearance.
The study asked 120 participants to rate eight pictures of men and women for their suitability for jobs working in a customer-facing role, such as a waiter or sales assistant in a shop, and for a non-customer facing role, such as a kitchen porter or stock assistant. Participants in the study were told that applicants were equally qualified and were shown faces that reflected a ‘normal’ weight and a subtle ‘heavier’ face. “The results found that both women and men face challenges in a highly ‘weight-conscious’ labour market, especially for customer-facing roles. However, women faced far more discrimination,” Nickson added. “We found that women, even within a normal BMI range, suffered greater weight-based bias compared to men who were overtly overweight,” Nickson noted.
London While the link between lifestyle and genetic factors with diabetes is well established, researchers have now found that long-term exposure to higher levels of traffic-related air pollution may also put you at increased risk of developing the chronic condition. Exposure to air pollution increases the risk of developing insulin resistance as a pre-diabetic state of Type-2 diabetes, the study said. “Whether the disease becomes manifest and when this occurs is not only due to lifestyle or genetic factors, but also due to traffic-related air pollution,” said Professor Annette Peters from Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen - German Research Centre for Environmental Health, located in Neuherberg, in Germany. For the study, published in the journal Diabetes, the researchers analysed data of nearly 3,000 participants of the KORA (Cooperative Health Research in the Region Augsburg conducted in Germany between 2006-2008) study who live in the city of Augsburg and two adjacent rural counties. All individuals were interviewed and physically examined. Furthermore, the researchers took fasting blood samples, in which they determined various markers for insulin resistance and inflammation. Non-diabetic individuals underwent an oral glucose
tolerance test to detect whether their glucose metabolism was impaired. The researchers compared these data with the concentrations of air pollutants at the place of residence of the participants, which they estimated using predictive models based on repeated measurements at 20 sites (for particle measurements) and at 40 sites (for nitrogen dioxide measurements) in the city and in the rural counties. “The results revealed that people who already have an impaired glucose metabolism, so-called pre-diabetic individuals, are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution,” lead author of the study Kathrin Wolf from Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen said. “In these individuals, the association between increases in their blood marker levels and increases in air pollutant concentrations is particularly significant! Thus, over the long term - especially for people with impaired glucose metabolism - air pollution is a risk factor for Type-2 diabetes,” Wolf noted.
Brain regions that builds panoramic memory identified
New York Neuroscientists have identified two brain regions that are involved in creating panoramic memories and help us to merge fleeting views of our surroundings into a seamless, 360-degree panorama. As we
look at a scene, visual information flows from our retinas into the brain, which has regions that are responsible for processing different elements of what we see, such as faces or objects. “Our understanding of our
environment is largely shaped by our memory for what’s currently out of sight,” said lead author Caroline Robertson, post doctoral student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. The study found the hubs in the brain where your memories for the panoramic environment are integrated with your current field of view. The researchers suspected that areas involved in processing scenes the occipital place area (OPA), the retrosplenial complex (RSC), and parahippocampal place area (PPA) might also be involved in generating panoramic memories of a place such as a street corner. Brain scans conducted on study participants revealed that when participants saw two images that they knew were linked, the
response patterns in the RSC and OPA regions were similar. However, this was not the case for image pairs that the participants had not seen as linked. This suggests that the RSC and OPA, but not the PPA, are involved in building panoramic memories of our surroundings, the researchers said. “Our hypothesis was that as we begin to build memory of the environment around us, there would be certain regions of the brain where the representation of a single image would start to overlap with representations of other views from the same scene,” Robertson added. For the study, the team used immersive virtual reality headsets, which allowed them to show people many different panoramic scenes, the researchers showed
participants images from 40 street corners in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighbourhood. The images were presented in two ways. Half the time, participants saw a 100-degree stretch of a 360-degree scene, but the other half of the time, they saw two noncontinuous stretches of a 360-degree scene. After showing participants these panoramic environments, the researchers then showed them 40 pairs of images and asked if they came from the same street corner. Participants were much better able to determine if pairs came from the same corner if they had seen the two scenes linked in the 100-degree image than if they had seen them unlinked, said the paper appearing in the journal Current Biology.

Irregular heartbeat may cause serious health hazards
Signs that tell your anxiety is too much! New Delhi We all get worried and stressed out at times, simply because that’s totally natural for us. But, do you really know how much is too much? Do you worry too much that it is hurting your relationship or your performance at work/ school? Anxiety can actually be helpful when it spurs you to take action and solve a problem. So, it’s quite normal for you to feel anxious when facing a challenge or so. But when anxiety becomes excessive, it can interfere with your daily life. Anxiety has also been implicated in several chronic physical illnesses, including heart disease, chronic respiratory disorders, and gastrointestinal conditions. Here are five signs that tell your anxiety is too high-
• Frequent or persistent worrying thoughts that make it hard for you to focus on daily tasks or responsibilities • You blow things out of proportion • Difficulty sleeping or insomnia due to excessive worry • Feeling tense and jumpy most of the day • Anticipating the worst • Shortness of breath • Stomach upset • Dizziness • High blood pressure If you feel your anxiety level is getting too high, there are things you can do to lower it and bring your life back into balance – regular exercise, practicing relaxation, getting enough sleep, limit intake of caffeine and alcohol, etc. Seeking experts’ help and opinions can be very effective and helpful.
London Irregular heartbeat also known as atrial fibrillation may lead to serious health issues like heart attacks, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and sudden cardiac death, finds a study. The researchers studied the associations between atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular disease, renal (kidney) disease and death. They analysed the results of 104 studies involving over nine million participants (587,867 with atrial fibrillation). Absolute risk increases included 3.8 events per 1,000 participant years for all cause mortality, 1.4 events per 1,000 participant years for ischaemic heart disease, and 6.6 events per 1,000 participant years for chronic kidney disease. The absolute risk
increase for heart failure (11 events per 1,000 participant years) was the highest among the outcomes examined. According to the study, published in the journal The BMJ, atrial fibrillation was associated with a two times risk of cardiovascular mortality, a 2.3 times risk of stroke and a five time risk of incident congestive heart failure. “Our study could have implications for the prioritisation of public health resources and the development of novel
interventions for adults with atrial fibrillation,” said lead author Ayodele Odutayo, doctoral candidate at University of Oxford. The researchers pointed out that the risk increases associated with many of these events is greater than that of stroke and mentioned that the study adds to the growing literature on the association between atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular outcomes beyond stroke.
Neuronal switch that turns off Genes effects may cause compulsive drinking urge congenital heart defects: Study
New York Researchers have found that inactivating a network of alcohol-linked neurons can switch off the urge for compulsive drinking. There may be a way to switch off the urge for compulsive drinking, according to a new study in animal models led by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). “We can completely reverse alcohol dependence by targeting a network of neurons,” said lead researcher Olivier George, Assistant Professor at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in San Diego, California. The findings, published in the The Journal of Neuroscience, built on previous studies showing that frequent alcohol use can activate specific groups of neurons.
The more a person drinks, the more they reinforce activation in the neuronal “circuit,” which then drives further alcohol use and addiction. For the new study, the researchers investigated whether there was a way to influence only the select neurons that form these circuits. In both humans and rats, these neurons make up only about five percent of the neurons in the brain’s central amygdala. For the current experiment, researchers designed rat models of alcohol dependence that expressed a special protein to distinguish only the neurons activated by alcohol. The rats gave the researchers a potential new window into how these circuits form in
human brains, where alcohol-linked neurons are harder to identify without the use of protein labels. The rats were then injected with a compound that could specifically inactivate only alcohollinked neurons. George said he was surprised to see these rats completely cease their compulsive alcohol drinking, a change that lasted for as long as the rats were monitored. “We’ve never seen an effect that strong that has lasted for several weeks,” George said. The researchers went on run the experiment a second and then a third time. Each time, the rats ceased drinking compulsively. “It’s like they forgot they were dependent,” George noted. Interestingly, these rats were still motivated to drink sugar water, indicating that the researchers had successfully targeted only alcohol-activated neurons, not the brain’s overall reward system. The rats also appeared to be protected from the negative physical symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, such as shaking.
New York The role of genes in congenital heart defects is more complex than previously thought with new research finding that the overall risk is determined by a combination of gene effects on both inside and outside of the heart itself. Congenital heart defect (CHD) is a problem in the structure of the heart that is present at birth and are a leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. Normal heart formation depends on interactions of multiple types of cells that collaborate in precise times and places throughout development to build the heart’s intricate structures. To figure out how these interactions can go awry, researchers at the University of California, at Irvine, in the US, studied atrial septal defects (ASDs, a common type of heart defect) in a mouse model. They studied the developmental disorder Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) — a very rare genetic disorder present from birth, but not always diagnosed at birth. Most cases of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome are caused by mutations that
inactivate a single copy of Nipbl a gene that directs the expression of many hundreds of other genes in tissues throughout the
body. Just as people with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome have a high incidence of heart defects, 30 per cent of mice that harbour similar Nipbl mutations exhibit atrial septal defects, the researchers said. Using genetically modified mouse models, they then selectively introduced or removed Nipbl mutations in different tissues during embryonic development. The findings showed that no Nipbl deficiency in any single tissue — including the tissue that forms the heart itself could singlehandedly account for the development of atrial septal defects. Rather, the development of heart defects was determined by interactions
between heart-forming tissues and the rest of the body. In fact, Nipbl deficiency in some tissues even seemed to protect against the development of atrial septal defects, in certain situations, the researchers explained. “The study results show that heart defects such as ASDs occur when the heart does not grow quickly enough to meet the demands of the developing body in other words, that heart size and body size must be coordinated for the heart to develop without defects,” said Anne Calof, Professor at University of California, at Irvine. “This is the first genetic demonstration that major risk factors for heart defects are likely to lie outside of the heart itself,” Calof added, in the paper published in the journal PLOS Biology.

SPAGHETTI AND BROCCOLI WITH CARBONARA SAUCE
This vegetable-laden riff on classic carbonara features crisp bacon, crunchy broccoli, and an eggy, cheesy sauce that clings perfectly to hot spaghetti. Be sure to top with plenty of cheese and black pepper. Ingredients 1 large egg plus 2 egg yolks 1 D 4 cup heavy cream salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 oz. bacon or pancetta, finely chopped 2 1D 2 cups small broccoli florets 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 D 2 lb. dry spaghetti 3 tbsp. grated Grana
Padano cheese, plus more for garnishing Instructions Set a pot of heavily salted water to boil for the pasta. Meanwhile, to a large heatproof mixing bowl, add the egg yolks, heavy cream, 3 Tbsp. Grana Padano, and a generous pinch each of salt and black pepper; whisk to combine. Set the bowl aside and let come to room temperature. Set a paper-towel-lined plate next to the stove. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the chopped bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until some of the fat has rendered and the bacon is crisp, about
13-14 minutes. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon or spatula and transfer to the paper-towellined plate (reserve about 2 Tbsp. fat in the skillet). Lower the skillet to medium heat and add the broccoli; season lightly with salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli is slightly softened but still bright green, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, one minute more. Turn off the heat. Season the boiling pasta water with salt, add the spaghetti and cook just until al dente. Using tongs, transfer the spaghetti in batches to the bowl with the egg mixture, stirring rapidly with the tongs after each addition. Do not drain the pasta water. Add the broccoli-garlic mixture and the crisp bacon to the pasta and toss well. Adjust the seasoning and loosen the sauce as needed using one tablespoon at a time of the pasta cooking water. Divide among two plates and garnish with more cheese and black pepper as desired.
THE ORIGINAL REUBEN SANDWICH
Pressing down on this sandwich with a spatula while it toasts in the pan is the key to achieving the outer crispness and wellmelted cheese that you want in a Reuben. Pile the meat on generously but not more than an inch or two thick or else the interior won’t get sufficiently warmed. Ingredients 3 tbsp. sauerkraut, well drained 3 tbsp. Thousand Island dressing 2 slices dark rye bread
Unsalted butter, softened 4 thin slices Emmenthaler Swiss cheese 4 slices Jewish-style corned beef, or more to taste Optional for serving: kosher dill pickle, potato chips, radishes Instructions In a small bowl, mix the sauerkraut with the Thousand Island dressing. Set aside. Spread one side of each bread slice generously with softened butter. Place 1 slice on a clean work
surface with the unbuttered side facing up. Top it with two slices of cheese, the corned beef, the sauerkraut, and then the remaining cheese. Top with the remaining bread slice, buttered side up. Heat a small skillet, griddle, or grill pan to medium-high. Melt a thin layer of butter in the skillet, or brush the grill pan with melted butter. Once hot but not yet smoking, transfer the sandwich into the pan and cook, pressing down occasionally with a spatula and flipping as needed, until the bread is browned evenly on both sides and the cheese is fully melted, about 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, slice in half, and serve immediately. Garnish the plate with the pickle, potato chips, and radishes if desired.
Its name derived from the French verb souffler, meaning “to breathe” or “to puff”, a soufflé’s pillowy top will naturally rise in the oven but slightly deflate just moments after removal. The eggy treat’s fleeting moment of perfection is one of the reasons the dish is handled so delicately by chefs and cherished so deeply by diners. This savory cheese version is courtesy of chef Daniel Skurnick of Le Coucou restaurant in New York City. Ingredients 2 tbsp. unsalted butter, plus more for greasing 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour 1 cup whole milk 1 D 4 tsp. kosher salt 1 D 4 tsp. freshly ground white pepper 1 D 8 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg
4 large eggs, yolks and whites separated 1 1D 2 firmly packed cups shredded Comté cheese Instructions In a heavy-bottomed medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook, whisking frequently, to form a thick blond roux, 5–7 minutes. Remove from the heat and slowly whisk in the milk until smooth. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil, whisking constantly. Reduce to a simmer and continue to cook for one minute. Remove from the heat and add the salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Let cool completely. Once cooled, whisk in the egg yolks and shredded cheese. Set a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to
400°. Grease four 6ounce soufflé molds or ramekins with butter and set them aside. In a clean, large bowl, vigorously whisk the egg whites to medium-stiff peaks. Using a spatula, gently fold the egg whites into the cheese mixture just until incorporated. Quickly distribute the egg mixture among the soufflé molds (it should fill three-quarters of the way up the molds), trying to avoid dirtying the sides. Gently tap the molds on the counter to help settle the contents, then set them on a small baking sheet. Immediately transfer to the oven. Bake until the soufflés are lightly golden and have risen above the rims of the molds, about 25 minutes. Remove and serve immediately.
