A LETTER From The ediTor
Exactly a decade ago, I started my writing career with a UK based decor magazine, and my first big feature was on bathrooms. I had researched so much about this space that somehow it became extremely special to me. The bathroom industry has changed significantly over the last 10-years, but one thing that has remained constant is the vital role oms practical, efficient and enjoyable places. This issue is no exception, with features loaded about bathroom spaces that are revolutionising the way we used to see it. MADE IN INDIA FIVE DESIGNERS MAKING THE COUNTRY PROUD VIRTUAL TOUR OF A NEWLY RENOVATED 50 YEARS OLD HOUSE
INDIA
INSPIRED ...from designs to designers and textures to patterns
Times are changing, so are our interests. Take the case of the simple stool - over time it has also evolved into something very much interesting. The article Special Feature talks about stools of varied nature – the article was a good read, because of the different ‘characters’ with quirky postures. Such chairs and stools also help in enhancing the decor of your home. Place them where you please and they will simply gel with the environment. The other interesting read was TIHG Decor. The colour yellow is not only soothing, but also spreads a charm of its own. Would like to read more such interesting features in the forthcoming issues. Maria Louis, Mumbai
Homes Galore Our home is close to our heart, whether it be a small house or a large mansion. TIHG as a magazine never ceases to amaze. The homes – India as well as international, are presented in an alluring manner. It’s not the number of pages that wins our hearts, it’s the way the home is presented visually. And, TIHG are master presenters of visuals, colours, and presentation. Just as an input - small cities and towns in India has some of the most amazing and quirky homes that are yet to be explored. It would be good to see such homes highlighted in TIHG. For the rest of the articles, less said the better – they are class acts. Mithun Das, Kolkatta
Green Escapes
Great Impact TIHG as a magazine is getting better and better each passing year. Every issue is different. The presentation, the colours, the visuals, all simply delight the eyes and the soul. As a family we simply enjoy reading the magazine. Looking forward to innovative, creative and imaginative articles month after month. Gayatri Prasad, Puri, Odhisa
Global warming is on the rise. It is the need of the hour to have green homes. A time to educate our young generation to understand the value of having potted plants in our homes. TIHG as a magazine is doing a great job of educating its readers through its articles related to garden. If there is open space in the balcony, then it would be a great idea to have a mini-garden or potted plants. I would like to request the Editor to incorporate more articles related to garden. It would also be a great idea to have a Q&A with garden experts. This way we readers would get an insight on the ‘hows’ and ‘whats’ of gardening. Udita Shaw, Punjab

I draw inspiration from... Natural habitat and wildlife. The art era that fascinates me the most... My work is inspired by my love for nature, by the medium I use, and by the natural eco-system I live and work in.
Pritam Mehta, Pyrography Artist Pyrography is all about... An age-old technique where a heated metal implement is used to burn on wood or leather, creating a decorative pattern. Also known as wood burning. Pyrography art to me is... A profession, where I use a hot metal tool and a steady hand to burn realistic images onto unfinished pieces of wood. Through my art... I find a deep spiritual connection with nature. Over the years as I’ve explored its nuances, the subtle blends of wood and the subjects I portray, I feel I’ve discovered something truly beautiful.
What I have always loved about my work... Is not knowing what I am going to make on a particular piece till I actually start making it and, till the last stroke, not knowing how it will end. I often look at a blank piece of wood for two days and meditate to get the answer. Sometimes I even work on a piece for a day, only to have it completely erased and start all over. The piece keeps evolving as I work….and that really intrigues me. My art collection includes... Tables, lamps, wall art, etc. I am currently working on... A coffee table with the image of an ancient world map. Dream art project... A mix of flowers and leaves, interspersed with butterflies and dragonflies, and the main subject of the piece is a couple of hummingbirds.
Everlasting Appeal Canadian Wood leaves a lasting impression at index 2019. The event showstopper was the gold lounge at the central design atrium, was embellished with free standing western red cedar screens; and the interiors showcased beautifully designed and finished pieces of furniture.
Arty Moments Iqrup+Ritz’s latest collection is a modern interpretation of art and craft. It’s all about bamboo/cane indoor furniture. The collection celebrates traditional craftsmanship, simple forms and focuses on natural materials.

Refreshing, energising and varied-just like the flower it originated from, the diverse tones of fuchsia range from purple overtones to pinkish hues depending on the intensity of the reds and blues involved. First introduced by fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1947, the bright and vibrant colour is created with a combination of red, white, and a little yellow and blue. Fuchsia can set a colour palette for a vibrant expression of individual style or provide a bold and stylish accent colour in an otherwise sedate space. It works especially well with navy or gold, and pairing with classic blue and white is always chic. Make a statement in your living room by saying adios to the safe neutral and hello to beautiful orchid! Not your average couch colour, these lovely pieces will look great with grays, creams and tans. Keep your accents soft for more focus on the furniture and less on the minor details. An overload of white, grey and brown can lead to monotony and blandness. Adding a colour like fuchsia can instantly light up an entire room and remove any sense of boredom. Using fuchsia can be similar to an extravagant stroke on canvas. It might be risky, but when you get it right, it can transform the entire aura of your surroundings. The multitude of shades that fuchsia comes in also helps you mix several different hues and values to get the ideal result. Regardless of what you choose, this accent is one that you won’t regret.

White is one of those colours that many homeowners shy away from, as they get nervous about making an all-white space feel comfortable and welcoming. White can be the most refreshing colour of the spectrum. It can evoke purity, cleanliness, and also confidence and sophistication. It is a beautiful canvas to use as a backdrop for your gorgeous vistas. Our recommendation? Start with your bathroom.

We were asked to plan it in a way that it caters to the brand’s requirements while providing a sense of pure luxury to the customers who visit the place. The store uses a combination of white and golden, to create a theme which is warm and timeless. As you enter, you will notice a lot of elements that have been inspired by European Design. The spatial layout is essentially based on a free-flowing movement pattern
and allows you to blend-in with the space.” “The racks run on both sides of the store, with nested tables in the center for customizations. director, takes the lead and makes the final decisions when it comes to design. I take the lead on strategy, marketing, our customer experience/journey both online and at stores, events, etc. Mom has the final say on design/product decisions. When designing new collections we both start from very different places, but usually end upon the same place.
Iqrup Dhamija & Ritika Dhamija (iqrup+ritz)
What prompted you to become a designer? Iqrup: I have always had a passion for beautiful homes. Travelling from a young age within India and then Europe played a large part in awakening my design sensibilities. Ritika: I grew up surrounded by design. My mother and business partner, Iqrup Dhamija is an interior architect. I’ve accompanied her to her workshop, joined her on site visits, and spent days with her shopping for materials in market from a very young age. These adventures inculcated a sense of design discipline in me. What is your specialisation? Iqrup: Ritika usually starts with a big picture of styles and trends that she is currently attracted to. It could be a colour palette or a picture, but there is a cohesive collection or ‘look’ vision from the word go. I start with individual pieces. When planning a space, I first think about placement and flow while Ritika goes straight to the moodbaord. Ritika: We’re both actively involved in designing collections, however, my mother, who is the creative
Who are your icons and inspirations? Iqrup: Textiles and architectural details are a huge source of inspiration. I’ve been collecting textiles and taking snaps of grills, railings, cornices and arches for many years before Instagram made it fashionable. Ritika: My mother. I’ve always been in awe of her and her work. Her dedication to craftsmanship is a constant inspiration. She started her interiors and furniture firm in 1985 and has been working with some of the same craftsmen for over 30 years. Her experience is priceless. The care and thought she applies to every project and each piece of furniture she creates is really inspiring. She also has a more steady and moderated approach that balances against my desire for quick results. The best thing that you have designed and is proud about? We had a tremendous amount of fun designing the collections for India Design ID in 2018. The concept was conceived around the imaginary home of a Viscount, a well-travelled archaeologist and hopeless romantic living in Alexandria in the 1930s. Every element was thought out down to his toiletries, images of his archaeological finds, and even the music on the radio. The collection was heavily influenced by the art deco style. As part of this collection, we also launched our very first screen printed textiles, which are a nod to traditional Kuba textiles of Congo and the prints of antique Ottoman robes.
a collaboration in the North East for bamboo/cane indoor furniture. We hope to provide continued support to the dwindling number of master craftsmen in the region, while creating beautiful products for the contemporary home. Our understated and elegant Jesmina Coffee Table has a beautifully woven bamboo top in traditional Naga patterns, and is offset by the architectural legs of the table. The glamorous Mor or Peacock indoor cane chair is a dramatic and modern reinterpretation of a retro classic. What advice would you like to give to young designers? The best way to learn is on the job. Find the person you admire the most and beg them for a position. Be curious. Get as much exposure as possible to ideas and visual references and then find your own unique and authentic language. And finally, don’t forget to pay attention to the details. The details are what make the design.
What are the current collections that you’re designing at Iqrup + Ritz ? Our latest collections are a modern interpretation of the ‘Arts and Crafts’ movement. The collection celebrates traditional craftsmanship, simple forms and brings natural materials to centre stage. We are particularly excited about The Ideal Home and Garden June 2019 |

Designer Speak
Sarah Fotheringham (Safomasi) What prompted you to become a designer? I have always had a passion for design and interiors. I studied illustration at University, but moving to India opened me up to the world of textiles and inspired me to start Safomasi, a brand creating illustrated fabrics and homewares inspired by travel.
The best thing that you have designed and is proud about? I design pieces that have a personal story to me, but hope that others also feel a connection to them. It’s hard to pick a favourite as they all hold special memories, but I’m especially fond of the Estuary Walk print from our Salcombe collection. It illustrates the coast near my family’s home in the UK, and I had a lot of fun drawing in all the details. With ten colours and a bold, yet intricate design it was also one of our most technically challenging fabrics to print and
What is your specialisation? Playful, figurative, illustrated prints that tell a story. Our specialty is in hand screen printing, as it’s a technique that perfectly lends itself to my style of illustration and has a very charming quality to it. Who are your icons and inspirations? I’m inspired by travel and nature. One of my favourite textile designers is Josef Frank, in particular his use of scale and colour - it’s so joyful. William Morris is another icon whose philosophies I admire as much as his designs.
it came out beautifully. What are the current collections that you’re designing at Safomasi? Each of our c ol l e c t i ons is inspired by a different place that we’ve travelled to, and I’m currently thinking of our next destination. Our latest collection, Indian Ocean, was inspired by a trip to Mauritius, but I like to mix it up so would like the theme of the next one to be totally different. I’m thinking of somewhere in Northern Europe. What advice would you give to young designers? Trends will come and go, so focus on creating work that has substance beyond style. Develop a strong point of view and your own unique voice. TIHG

Arya Nerker (Nicobar)
What prompted you to become a designer? It wasn’t something I was actively looking at, but something that was a little bit of chance and luck. I took a design class at Parsons in New York. It sounded interesting and I thought I should try it. I loved it so much that I found myself actively thinking about it all the time. So after I graduated from Brown University, which is a liberal art show college, I applied to Parsons, took it up full time, and rest is history. What is your specialisation? Print patterns design is what I love doing and comes easy to me. I also like mixing materials such as brass and wood or brass marble to create products that are interesting. Who are your icons and inspirations? I love Joesph Dirand, Mies Vander Rohe, Anita Lal and Maria Grazia Chiuri from the contemporary design. I admire people who have an innate sense of who they are and what they have to say. Even though all their styles and creations are so different I feel they had the courage of conviction to make their voice heard. The best thing that you have designed and is proud about? There is no best thing that I have designed. It’s ever evolving. I used to design the Goodearth journal, so Farah Baksh is my favourite from there - I am very attached to it. And the roti box at Nicobar where I could mix materials like metal and brass. I could take an everyday object used by everyone and elevate it. That really thrills me. What are the current collections that you’re designing at Nicobar? I design all homeware for Nicobar and the current collection includes tableware, decor and home textiles. We are concentrating on the travelling gypsies from the Kutch region that travelled to Eastern European countries and are still there today. Studying their Indian customs that have now been moulded over the years into something new. Their patchwork clothes to their tattoo art is
all so exciting. What advice would you like to give to young designers? Be present, be curious and do something about that. Be excited to learn and work. It makes the everyday so much more fulfilling. TIHG

We speak to the architect who has an artistic approach towards work Impressions: Ruhi Singh
Early days I am an architect by profession, and I worked as lead designer with many prominent architecture firms in Delhi - though my inclination and interest in learning and adopting advanced design technologies led me to become an expert in computation design and fabrication space. Today, I am mentoring students and professionals from across the globe by giving lectures and presentations, and through my YouTube channel, which is the most visited channel globally in this domain. My advanced research took me to an art space, and I am a full time entrepreneur in Public Art Space having completed installations in Delhi High Court, Apple HQ (Hyderabad), Dubai Design District, Aero Show California, Marriot Hotel (Goa) and various other private collections, within single year of establishment.

Connection between art and architecture When architecture is pushed to become art, it becomes sculpture. My work is subset of architecture, which involves solving problem with an artistic approach, considering the constraints and coming out with the best possible optimised solution. We design an experience. The art installation or public art is a product derived from the process of synthesising knowledge in construction, engineering, human behaviour and needs, and formal aesthetic order for the purpose of responding to a particular problem involving human use and habitation, which contributes to the cultural capital of the society that benefits from such a product. USP Our narrative is governed by the context and storyline, hence every installation is unique. I get excited by the challenges each project brings with it whether it is material, scale budget constraints or time lines. Our projects can be large, complex and multi-dimensional or simple in geometry and small in scale. They can integrate a range of elements and materials including metals, wood, solid surface, glass, composites, textiles, lighting, digital media and electronics. Our team consists of architects, industrial designers, interior designers, engineers, graphic designers, specialised fabricators and expert craftsmen. Supported by advanced CAD and parametric design software, we operate at the forefront of digital fabrication. Exciting and challenging materials Every material has its own set of opportunities and limitations. I find corten steel to be very exciting as it is very flexible and economical; can be used in outdoors and appearance becomes richer over a period of time. Almost all material comes in a sheet form, which enables us to engineer them into components that can be self assembled. If I have to point out, Glass is still something that pose greater challenges when it comes to specific hardware
for custom use that are not easily available in the market and has very little flexibility in complex formations. Your inspiration I can be inspired by almost anything; museum or art shows, architecture, cool shapes, other artists, nature, pop culture, TV, animals, friends, music, things I see while driving, etc. The key is to look at all things, even the most common or uninteresting, as a potential source of inspiration. Learn to observe and think more visually. I have learnt a great deal from the works of many architects and artists such as Thomas Heatherwick, Olafur Eliasson, Antony Gormley and Richard Deacon. I have been most influenced by the works of Anish Kapoor for his installations being very minimalistic, yet powerful and backed by meticulous fabrication. Future plans The public art field is made up of meaningful partnerships and relationships. I would like to collaborate with artists, designers and architects from India and abroad, and try to push the boundaries of design and digital fabrication. We are gathering experience upon each work, building on our expertise and refine our craft. TIHG The Ideal Home and Garden June 2019 |

MInnIe BHAtt (MInnIe BHAtt DeSIGn) When Minnie founded Minnie Bhatt Design ten years ago, she felt the need to have greater independence with regards to her design language and to openly express her creativity. She says, “My style is eclectic and versatile, which is reflected in most of my projects, be it hospitality, residential or second homes. I like to create warm spaces with lots of tiny details that enhance the space. I prefer working with pure materials as opposed to look alike. I believe passion towards creating great design and spaces along with the ability to create spaces as imagined and envisaged is the key to perfection, which I follow in my work and daily life.” Her initial and memorable projects include - a villa in Goa, a bungalow by the sea in Juhu, Silver Beach Cafe (her first F&B project), and the first outlet of Burma Burma in Mumbai. From there it was no looking back - Minnie Bhatt Design has worked on more than 70 plus hospitality projects. Minnie says, “I’ve never been an over-ambitious person, but, I do consider myself to be passionate about the work I do, and look forward to doing good projects pan India and abroad in the next five years - it is my vision for Minnie Bhatt Design. Shibani Jain started Baaya with an aim to bring Indian cultural art and craft to the forefront. She was attracted to crafts as a student at the national Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. She says, “In the early 2000s, the Indian arts and crafts didn’t have a real platform to present themselves. I had always been a curious traveller who journeyed deep into villages and visited rural artisans. I noticed that each region had something special to offer and I made it my mission to help uncover that. The realisation that many of these arts and skills lay at risk of dying out entirely, served to steel my resolve.” Her store Baaya is named after the Indian weaver bird, which weaves a beautiful nest for itself with carefully-picked leaves and twigs. Baaya Design, the company, and Studio Baaya, the design wing, began innovating on crafts and brought them into corporate and hospitality spaces – as lobby installations, wall murals, mixed media panels and more. This furthered the journey of the art form and created sustainable livelihoods for the
craft community. Baaya’s goals are design-based, social as well as commercial. Shibani says, “I am looking to take the company international, grow our e-commerce division and widen our artistic abilities. I also seek to foster meaningful interactions between our core communities, such as our architectural and interior design collaborators, our retail customers, the homeowner and of course, the artisans.” The Ideal Home and Garden June 2019 |

MASooMA RIzvI (BeLItA DeSIGn SoLutIonS) A self-made entrepreneur, Masooma Rizvi has more than two decades of experience in interior design, museology and art curation. Her mantra in life is very simple - ‘dreams work only if you do.’ Setting up a design firm in 2007 after years of freelancing, with very little capital, no business acumen and only an unbridled passion to create outstanding design, Masooma has come a long way. Being an acknowledged expert and deeply rooted in traditional Indian culture, her forte is its representation through the rich Indian art forms using modern concepts of transforming spaces. She says, “The creative process is different for each project and spaces need to be carefully woven into story-lines for the audience to understand our civilisation link between the past and the present. While doing so, we need to focus on the way in which the world is exposed to our rich cultural heritage without trying to change their way of living. This is what I want to add to the current narrative of the interior design - art and craft scene in our country through Belita Design. Building my own firm from scratch gave me insights into the hurdles, biases and difficulties that budding women entrepreneurs face - yet I am an example that if you work ethically, giving your best and are driven with passion, you will triumph.” Masooma has some of the most prestigious projects on her portfolio, including Rashtrapati Bhavan, Manekshaw Centre and Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra at Delhi, Amar Jawan Jyoti Corridor Museum and Deendayal Museum, Jaipur, Indian temple at White Horse temple Complex, Luoyang, China, Indo-Bahrain Friendship Mural at Bahrain and a large number of equally reputable projects with the likes of election Commission of India and Archeological Survey of India. She has recently been selected to oversee the art curation of the new Supreme Court building, which in itself, is a unique challenge and honour. She happily mentions, “Belita Design Solutions in the future will grow into a platform to help artisans sustain their livelihood through what they love - traditional art and craft along with viable contemporary decor.”

SRILA CHAtteRJee (BARo) “Passion is energy, and the power that comes from doing what you really love is unparalleled. That is what drives me: my passion for art, craft, beautiful things and all the wonderful stories behind them. The stories are the most important, they are what make things special and create the connections that drive me,” says Srila Chatterjee, the brain behind Baro, a space for sharpened aesthetics and creative design. She further states, “everything is a trigger to a bigger picture, and how the picture gets painted depends on how many triggers I am able to find. I’m not an artist, nor do I create things myself, but I can tell stories through the things I find and the tales they all tell. What’s really important is to go in search of these things/ stories – to wander, to find new places and to look for new people
and ideas.” Baro holds a lot of what’s inside Srila - every single thing it offers is something she personally likes, and something she is always excited to share. Her partner Siddharth designs the furniture, and the stories of how a piece is conceived, made and then comes to life, are loaded with many bits and pieces of both our lives. The other offerings come from many parts of India and sometimes beyond; there are people behind them all, and what they do, and how they do it, is what Srila tries to ensure gets across to everyone who comes. Where will this journey take us? Who knows…success is in the journey, not in the destination, and it’s a world with so much left to be discovered she tells with a smile. Creating continuity with the colour palette of the young boy’s bedroom, the bathroom has a combination of brown and blue on the walls. Tiles simulating Burma rosewood panels have been used in the entire bathroom, while shaded blue tiles cover the wall behind the washbasin.
This master bathroom is designed with a chequered floor in green onyx and hite Chianti marble much like a chessboard. Inlaid in black marble are the chess symbols of the king and queen. To add to the drama, the vanities are also designed as chessmen.
MonicA KhoSlA BhArgAvA, KhAM conSultAntS Aqua coloured stellar slabs and crisp white fixtures in the JWT office washrooms score high on the design quotient. Not only do they effectively use the curtain glass wall to invite natural light, but also blend into the colour scheme of the awesome view of the Rajarhat wetlands. While the vanity zone enjoys the view, the detailing ensures that the urinals and WC’s are discreetly tucked into the sides to ensure privacy.

Keeping in mind the client brief, a bespoke washbasin in a rare blacken marble was designed to match the exclusivity and exoticness of the marble used on the walls with uneven and unique grains. Gold was surely the rationale here. It is the master toilet of our “Gold Abode, and the dash of gold in the basins and the lights was more than welcome. The statement is created by the bling of the gold here and there and yet not overpowering. Needless to mention the His and Her glamourised gold basins. The selection of the materials in gold is intentional. The selection of the Italian marble is also to highlight the gold. This is a restoration of our mega project - Belgadia Palace, which was converted into a boutique hotel. This powder room connected to the library firstly carries the same sunny yellow colour from the room, and is more of a extension of the same. An old vanity was converted into a basin counter and fits in perfectly in the scheme of things. A series of wall art on the walls truely create a interesting feature. The highlights are the architectural concealed ceiling lights, and the black and white intricate vintage tiles.

A host of stones with varied textures and colours – Swaroski white for the floor, grey aphroditeon for the wall and counter - come together to form a harmonious space that is a delight to senses. The vertical garden outside the window creates a cooling imagery. The under-the-tub and console lighting adds interest to the play of textures.
A black-and-white scheme highlights a slick space. The Swiss white stone on the floor and Nero Saint Laurent on the walls and the counter, give out a stunning contrast. The circular mirrors above the counter, against the ceiling-to-flooring windows, add glossiness to the already luminous space. A bold artwork introduces a wonderful raw vibe in an otherwise sophisticated bathroom.
A fun collage of funky artworks on the walls creates a stimulating and exciting environment in this bathroom for a young girl. The gorgeous swiss white stone on the walls, the white statuario of the counter and the elegant white bathtub wonderfully contrast and complement the heringbone engineered wooden flooring. The twigs chandelier further adds a delightful element to this bathroom making it a fun place that you want to spend time in and get refreshed mentally as well.

This master bathroom, has been designed using Burberry beige and Belgian black marble. The detailing with the black marble is minimal and subtle with no more than a 2” wide boarder and of course the wash basin counter top that breaks the monotony of beige and white. A 5’ x 5’ customised Venetian mirror is the focal point and adds grandeur to this otherwise elegantly subdued bathroom.
The master bathroom, in Swiss white marble and shades of blue lends an extremely chic, soothing and stately look. Swiss white marble on the floor and walls, with a customised striking border in Lapis Lazuli, and Swiss white marble to frame the floor and shower panel wall in the shower cubicle adds to the beauty, a stunning wash basin, Marrakesh by Kohler and one wall clad in a blue and white paisley wallpaper make the focal design elements in this bathroom.
This contemporary bathroom has been designed with a minimalistic look with floor and walls clad in Grey William marble and a Swiss white counter top. The bathroom has two separate spacious shower and water closet cubicles with all the fixtures and sanitary by Kohler - and the wash basin and WC by Villeroy & Boch. The descriptor “earthy” can apply to a variety of things, from the scent of overturned soil to a person’s philosophy about the environment, but in decorating, it refers to the colours that derive from nature. Browns, greys, greens, and tans work together harmoniously to mimic the colour scheme found in the great outdoors. These shades are woodsy, organic hues that make your home feel timeless. Whether you yearn for a modern or more traditional home, earth tones work well with almost any plan. In a welldesigned home, this colour palette will always impress and is a safe choice for those looking for a luxurious and relaxing atmosphere that is as comfortable as it is pleasing to the eye. Because they’re flat and muted, they work well with most colours and tones. Earth tones also complement rooms with a lot of wood, stone, metal or glass. There are different variations of these tones, but most commonly they refer to a room that has been outfitted prominently with the colour brown, or colours very near to it. Brown, in its lightest shades, can provide subtle warmth and fix the problem of glare that often comes with an all-white room. As shades darken into sandy hues, brown becomes an effective colour to bring a rich glow to a room. At its darkest shades, brown can be a comforting, cosy accent that keeps a room from feeling too large. The use of earth-toned materials in the house like furniture, area carpets or even walls, make a room viable to any colour and design, which makes it more pretty and sophisticated!

his 8,000 sqft villa is truly majestic. Being located in one of the most prominent areas, the home has been devised with a concentric thought of preserving the thriving treescape of the site while curating a contemporary abode. The built spaces have been carefully crafted in and around the existing treescape, that was desired to be maintained. The architecture and interior design of this two-acre project, accentuate the authenticity of the site and is conceptualised in sync with the mature gardens that is punctuated by a swimming deck, stretched along the entire front length of the villa.

Challenges galore
The Prasad’s primarily envisioned a green retreat integrated with luxurious modern-day facilities. Merging the organic environment with the interior spaces, the integral challenge of the design was dealt with by giving the built-form a horizontal spread, meandering the composition in a lyrical flow with continuing connections. The connecting spaces are adorned with wooden pergolas/trellis, to enhance the journey between each cluster of built-form. Requisite privacy has been maintained for the family by placing the private spaces on the rear end of the site and fore-fronting the design with vibrant green lawns.

galleries adorned with paintings, on the second floor. A profound emphasis has been evidently laid on the indoor furnishings, with modern geometric assets used strategically to amplify the sophisticated flamboyance. The colour palette primarily infuses pastel shades, with a combination of decorative accent lighting for the living spaces and soft gold pendant lighting for the bedrooms to render the entire set-up with a luminous grace. An array of exhibited artistic pieces created by celebrated artists, impart further nuance to the designed space. They are a reflection of the family’s artistic personalities and supplement the composition with a sense of finesse. Consoles and patterned coffee tables instil picturesque flavour. cladding and white paint, the external facade complements the natural palette of the ambience while possessing a bold and defined statement. The flora sprinkled throughout the land dons changing shadow patterns on the facade, thus imparting it with a dynamic expression. Magnanimous openings on the north and eastern side, give a glimpse of the poised interiors. Designed to portray an understated plush appeal, the deck area is occupied by comfortable chairs and a bar set-up in an environ naturally shaded by the cocoon of trees for the maximum span of the day. The climbing Bougainville on the cantilevered steel pergola melds with the surroundings and envelopes the stone bar placed next to the entrance walkway. With landscaping being the showstopper of this habitat-design, they also aid in maintaining ambient temperatures on the outdoor and indoor arenas while serving their essence of vitality to the design. With trees like the Champa and Ashoka being original residents of the site, contrasting white and purple ground cover was planted to concoct a vibrant and verdant spectacle for anyone who strolls into the milieu. The Upper House Situated over 49 floors above the Pacific place in Admiralty, The Upper House provides both stellar views of Hong Kong’s Victoria harbour and the city’s bustling neon skyline to the mountainous West. It’s the unassuming consideration for visual unobtrusiveness that makes the experience so memorable. Elegance and contemporary style is found in the hotel’s design details. Design inspiration has been taken from Asian and Western influences, including an excellent curation of site-specific and nature-inspired artworks. Ascending into the hotel’s 117 spacious guest rooms, each is designed to provide a sense of understated luxury. The room layouts offer abundant space including 300 sqft bathrooms with walk-in rain showers, dressing areas and free-standing bathtubs with breathtaking panoramic harbour or island views. The highlight of the journey is Level 49, which showcases the architecturally intriguing sky bridge. Infused with a skylight above a 40 metre high atrium, the sky bridge leads to the sky lounge, the signature restaurant and bar, and Café Gray Deluxe. TIHG
