A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

At your home, where do you hangout? If it’s “the kitchen,” then you’re part of a growing trend. Life happens in the kitchen. It is a space where cooking, eating and lots of family activities get knitted, and also a place where we share our fondest memories with people who are dearest to us - apt to say it is the heart of the home. I’m so thrilled to share a dedicated issue packed with global kitchen trends. The team has hand-picked kitchen designs that are personal, thoughtful and multifunctional. We are starting a series “Design Circle” with our favourite brand Bent Chair to provide a platform for design mavericks to talk and discuss topics that are important for the design industry. Catch us on social media channels for more updates. We are hoping you enjo this latest issue as much as we loved it for you.

Travel Sojourns The Ideal Getaway section is my all time favourite in TIHG. As my husband is in the travel business, we both eagerly look forward to travel destinations featured in the magazine. I have noticed that a lot of emphasis is given to overseas locations. Yes, there are beautiful locations in many European and Asian countries. However, I would like to put it this way that there are heavenly abodes in India as well. The edit team should explore such options and feature them in TIHG. Swati Piramal, Mumbai

Eye Candy A magazine is viewed as elite when there is something to whisper about it. TIHG surely does come in that class. The last few months have seen an upswing in the magazines layout, presentation and visuals. For a reader, visuals are far more pleasing to the eye than a thousand worded text. I am sure TIHG is ready to ring in more surprises in the upcoming issues. The best thing a reader looks forward to in the magazine are the ‘specials.’ For us they are the ultimate uprising. Mansi Patralekha, Puri

Fusion Drama

Green Vision Our cities and towns are getting depleted of green cover at an alarming rate. Apartments in high rises hardly have any space for an indoor garden. Having a green cover around us will not only help us breathe freely, but also pump in vital oxygen needed for survival. I would request the Editor to focus and dedicate a few pages on indoor home gardens. This garden can be either in the kitchen balcony or the living room balcony. Just like how TIHG covers the bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen, the living space, it should also give sufficient space to home gardens. Ankush Bolar, Sindhudurg

What makes a home so beautiful? Of course, it’s the interiors and the decor. Homes from across the world are some of the best as they are less cluttered and more spacious. One of the reasons being – most houses are individual villas (that’s a widely accepted concept). Even in India, we have beautiful and appealing homes. However, in majority cases the interiors, the decor, the furniture and the fabrics look stunning, but there is too much of clutter all around. I feel it’s time to look towards the West for proper space management and planning. We have the resources and the talent pool, it’s just that the implementation needs to be in the right perspective. The Catherdral Towers Notre Dame’s imposing and ornate towers became a legend thanks to 19th-century novelist Victor Hugo, who invented a hunchback named Quasimodo and had him inhabit the South tower in “The Hunchback of Notre Dameâ€?. The towers plunge upward for 68 meters (223 ft.), offering noteworthy views of the Ile de la citĂŠ, the Seine, and the entire city. First, though, you’ll need to climb nearly 400 stairs. The South tower houses Notre Dame’s infamous 13-ton bell.

“Notre Dame’s imposing and ornate towers are a benchmark in French architecture. The same way, the Gâteau OpĂŠra (OpĂŠra Cake) is a classic in French pastry. Rose Window The rose window of the West Façade of Notre-Dame is 9.60 metres in diameter. The oldest rose window installed in the cathedral, it dates from 1225 and forms a halo above the Virgin with Child statue placed in front of it. It has retained from the Middle-Ages its original glass and tracery. The rose window depicts symbolic scenes from the Zodiacs and the Labors of the Months. Since 1730, the interior view has been blocked by the great organ case.

“We created the ornate window where the most integral characteristic is the layering of colour and transparency within the intricate patterns. We decided to play on this aspect by using sugar work to create a hard transparent disc. The patterns were then translated into motifs that resembled those of the original rose window and piped on with royal icing HQNNQYGF D[ C VTCPUNWEGPV IGN VJCV YCU VKPVGF YKVJ XCTKQWU EQNQWTU 9JGP UGGP KP TGIWNCT NKIJV VJG FCTMPGUU QH VJG JQNNQY WPFGT VJG INCUU NKMG VQRRGT YQWNF CRRGCT FCTM LWUV CU VJG TQUG YKPFQY NQQMU NKMG HTQO VJG QWVUKFG *QYGXGT YJGP VJG DCUG KU NKV WR VJG EQNQWTU CTG TGXGCNGF CU VJG NKIJV WPFGTPGCVJ KNNWOKPCVGU VJG GPVKTG UVTWEVWTG ¥ Nimisha Dhingra (Kraft Kitchen) 38 | July 2019 The Ideal Home and Garden

The Gallery of Kings The gallery of kings is a row of 28 statues representing each one of the kings of Judah, descendants of Abraham and human ancestors of Mary and Jesus. The original statues were painted and added to the faรงade in the 13th century. They were mistaken for representing the kings of France which led them to be beheaded and taken away from the faรงade at the French Revolution.

Spire The cathedral spire, which was destroyed in the April 2019 fire was originally constructed in the 13th century. It was battered, weakened and bent by the wind over five centuries, and finally was removed in 1786. However, again restored in the 19th Century. Following Viollet-le-Duc’s plans, the spire was surrounded by copper statues of the twelve Apostles—a group of three at each point of the compass. In front of each group is an animal symbolising one of the four evangelists: a steer for Saint Luke, a lion for Saint Mark, an eagle for Saint John and an angel for Saint Matthew. Just days prior to the fire, the statues were removed for restoration.

Designer Speak

Design in 2009.

Sanjyt Syngh

Your most valuable project till date...

(Founder and Interior Designer, Sanjyt Syngh)

Each project has a different design language ranging from eclectic luxe to Miami chic, maximalism to Swiss cottage. This is one of the most difficult questions to answer.

Designing to you is... Very personal. It’s an expression of your taste. And if it doesn’t create conversations, it’s not design. It must have a story. A lot of design is story-telling.

Your advice to young upcoming designers...

Your inspiration... There are many of people and experiences that inspire me. I have learned so many things from so many different people and I consider all of them icons because they’ve changed my life and the way I think in so many ways.

Stay true to your aesthetics and do not blindly follow trends. Make them your own. Marry them with your aesthetics and create your own language. Another thing to keep in mind is – do not repeat. tIHG

Current design trends... The strongest trend we are seeing these days is Maximalism. I feel it’s a reaction against Minimalism. I love to say, ‘More is More’ contrasting with the minimalist belief ‘Less is More.’ Another major trend we are seeing is colour. You see a lot of soft colours, blush, dusty pinks. It is very gender-neutral. Your designs are a reflection of... I live design. It is very difficult for me to differentiate between Sanjyt Syngh as a person and Sanjyt Syngh as a designer. My designs are a reflection of me and are expressed

through so many mediums. I call myself a mix of influences. Your journey so far... As a child I was always inquisitive about how things were made. I would invariably be sitting under or inside pieces of furniture to figure out the construction details. I studied interior and spatial design at Chelsea College of Art & Design at the University of Arts, London. Later, I moved to New Delhi, and after spending the first couple of years consulting with different firms, I formed SANJYT SYNGH : Interior/

kshita’s art depicts life in abundance, adding colour and vibrancy. Akshita shares, “My work is not just a visual treat, it engages with my audience by penetrating their intellect and tugging at their souls. I work on a concept, write a poem and then begin creating artwork that visually supports my theme. These concepts are based on social, historical, mythological and literary concepts from Shakespeare and Tolstoy to tongue twisters and nursery rhymes; from tales of Cleopatra and Don Quixote to social issues like refugees’ suffering and human trafficking. My artwork aspires to capture the fickle nature of fantasies, whims and reveries, we so often deem as reality.” Akshita photographs slums, quaint lanes, and architecture of different cities, these are then printed on canvas. Different media like Chinese ink, acrylic paint, and markers are used to develop the photographs further. The photographs represent structure, our everyday lives, the mundane we live in. The bright colours, strokes and intricate designs that are added over the photographs represent the viewer’s achieved, repressed, conquered, yearning for or maybe even fulfilled dreams.

ailing from a business family, embarking on a career as an artist was not easy for Swati, but it was her talent and love for art that finally made her win the love and support of not just her family, but art lovers as well. Since her first exhibition in the year 2008, Swati’s art has found ways to some of the eminent exhibitions in India as well as abroad. Her artistic creations display an immense artistic maturity. Swati reveals, “It was pranic healing which helped me find a way to express my inner soul, and being a pranic healer, I have a strong spiritual side to myself, and most of my creations are made with the intention of spreading positivity.” In her quest to express the spiritual in a tangible form, Swati has taken help of both paintings and sculptures. For Swati, the act of creating a work of art is synonymous to following a particular train of thought, developing and working on them unless the thought is translated seamlessly into her creations. When she paints, it is more like letting her emotions flow without any obstruction. She can never pin point when and how the painting will end, it is just an inner joy, which she feels when her inner thoughts are translated on her painting and that is when she knows, her work is done.

he visuals that Gaurvi creates are a reaction to her everyday experiences. She had always been interested in drawing, but discovered her fascination for collages while living in Japan. She mentions, “Art is a language, that I am most comfortable with. I speak my heart out when I draw. What I express through art is pure and heartfelt. Art is also a medium for me to vent out emotions, I am struggling with and a way of celebration, when I am happy, positive and joyful.” After Gaurvi stepped into motherhood, her works were mostly woven around the small moments spent with her little one. Like nature walk with him, waiting for his school bus, sitting under a tree listening to birds sing. She celebrated these small moments by drawing them. Her creations are an honest documentation of this transition. Since her college days, Gaurvi was interested in working with mixed media. She says, “I love how the materials add another dimension to the artwork. Love for detail that I experienced in Japanese culture seeped into my work. And slowly from linear and bold strokes my work became small and detailed. My art has grown with me, and I enjoy how my experiences shape my work.” tiHG

delicious concoction of an abode that echoes Gallic elegance and captures the occupants’ vision is this 4 BHK Kanpur weekend home spread in a 3,000 sqft area. We say a weekend home, because the house has been designed as a place for relaxation for the family. It is located in a lush green property in Kanpur and faces acres and acres of greenery and has an impressive 1,500 sqft garden and a swimming pool. Channeling the enigmatic ‘je ne sais quois’ French style

in the project, Pooja Gupta, the creative force behind I-Design Studios’ interior aesthetic, explains her vision, “The clients wanted their home to be steeped in the unmistakable French flavour with personal touches in the form of objects and furniture with alluring back stories. They didn’t want their home to be overly classical or stuffy, something that looked too decorated and had no soul. The French have a predilection for collecting history-laden objet d’arts—in doing so what The Ideal Home and Garden July 2019 |

This wonderful family too had a treasure trove of collectibles that they have amassed over the years from their travels, which are full of sentiments and nostalgia and add to the meaning of the scheme.” One of the statement places in the house, and also the introduction to the French aesthetics is the living room. The entrance has an enchanting beading work with a shoe console, while the inside has egg-shell hued walls and mid-century modern furniture, which have an antique walnut polish adding to the whole yesteryear charm. the timeless French style—such as the inviting turquoise-drunk Chesterfield sofa where cushions—with embroidered patterns starring and solids, lend themselves as an impressive ensemble cast. Adjoining the living room is a roomy balcony where a chic rustique narrative unfolds with a beautiful pergola, airy rattan outdoor furniture, mirrors made of hollowed-out tree stumps, potted plants, and not to forget the ceramic animal menagerie that’s seen in other areas of the home as well. “The balcony is, hands down, my favourite spot—this is where I imagined the family to come together, cuddle, catch up—whilst savouring a sweeping view of the city,” says Pooja. When it comes to the bedrooms—master and guest-follow two diverse colour schemes, materials, and flourishes. “The mandate

a lot of the influences come in from the fact that the client’s mother has an impressive personal collection of french paintings and truly love the french vibe of collecting history-laden objet d’arts. I received from the homeowners for the bedrooms was simple—to aim for modern-day comfort first and while you are at—bring in the character and personality,” shares Pooja. So, while the master bedroom conveys a dreamy softness and farmhouse bent—the guest bedroom, on the other, evokes coastal calm and Mediterranean liveliness. The master bedroom has a sitting space with two chairs for times when they wish to read or just be. There is no television in the room, but there is a state-of-the-art music

This being crafted with hands did not have the same precision as a machine cut wallpaper and therefore the joining lines wrest as clean, that is when the beautiful beading came

o not get surprised with the beautiful drangonfly’s life cycle that can be witnessed from the entrance area to the ceiling and walls as well as furniture. After all, to keep it simple, the seasoned restaurateur Priyank Sukhija decided to name his lounge-cumfine dining place - Dragonfly. Spread across 10,000 sqft, the space is divided in three levels, each with a bar, and double height ceiling, which makes it the largest restaurant in the city. Lending interesting colours and vibrant feel through art pieces and furniture, the space has been designed by father-daughter duo Natasha Jain and Neeraj Jain, Co-Founders, Bent Chair. Reflecting the owner’s vibrant persona, Bent Chair has also customised furnishings with a hint of their signature eccentricity in each design detail for Dragonfly

experience. What we loved apart from mouth-watering cuisines, is the interesting wall behind DJ console area that showcases dragonfly’s anatomy in kaleidoscopic colours. Priyank along with chef Sagar Bajaj has especially curated a menu that comprises almost 80 per cent of exotic signature delicacies for Dragonfly. For beverages, Priyank has brought on board experts from around the world.
