Our Education Understanding The multi-disciplinary nature of our firm ensures that we can create a solution to any engineering need in the education field whether large, newbuild projects or smaller refurbishments. Communication The crucial factor with any educational project from the outset is consideration of the needs of the people involved - students, academic and administration staff, and the local community. Meinhardt understands these needs and is able to deliver a range of creative, timely and cost-effective solutions. Teaching An effective learning environment is one which provides easy interaction between academic staff and students, and addresses students’ needs for both individual and collaborative learning, as well as providing them with the ancillary services to satisfy their needs, preferences and work patterns. From an environmental perspective, concerns for the health and well-being of staff and students are increasing interest in improved building performance. Strategies including daylighting, the specification of sustainable and non-toxic building materials, and the use of renewable energy sources are gaining attention in the design of education facilities. An example of the outcome of this approach is the $9M Green Skills Centre of Excellence for NMIT. Meinhardt, together with Blomquist + Wark, was commissioned to design a new 5 star ‘state of the art’ facility on the Epping campus to support the training and delivery of knowledge and skills development in environmentally sustainable practices specialising in low

carbon sustainable technologies. The building is an exemplar facility specifically designed as an environmentally sustainable model and as such not only effectively contributes to efficient energy and resource management but is also the ideal training model for educational programs. Administration Whilst not the core business of education institutions, the administration function is a key factor in the success of any enterprise. Meinhardt has an enviable track record in providing places where people want to work. The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Geelong Headquarters building is an example of our work in this space. It is a stimulating and exciting work environment providing 15,000m2 of space that have set new standards in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. For staff, this means plenty of fresh air and lots of natural light. Meinhardt provided specialist consultancy services to TAC including preparation of benchmark building design parameters, review and assessment of developer proposals, monitoring of base building design, documentation and delivery, integrated fitout design documentation, and technical administration. Similarly, in partnership with the Sustainability Energy Authority of Victoria, Meinhardt provided engineering consultancy services for the Bendigo Bank Headquarters Building.

Designed to achieve 5 star Green Star and house over 1000 staff, a strong emphasis was placed on creating a workplace to support the culture and aspirations of The Bank. The building has been designed as a low rise campus, creating large floor plates connected by atriums that flood the interior work environment in natural light. Meinhardt carried out computational fluid dynamic analysis of the underfloor airconditioning system as well as an assessment of the Indoor Environment Air quality. Specialist Facilities As symbols of technological progress, research facilities are essential to the discoveries and breakthroughs of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Research facilities present a unique challenge to designers with their inherent complexity of systems, health and safety requirements, long-term flexibility and adaptability needs, energy use intensity, and environmental impacts. Meinhardt’s extensive experience and expertise focuses on holistic engineering solutions that address specific issues including: ¡¡ Base structure design, which includes additional floor loading, special structural bay spacing and floor to floor heights required to accommodate typical high ceiling laboratories ¡¡ Special structural systems for vibration and additional floor loads;

chiller plant, cooling tower, emergency generator and Building Automation System Some of these issues were critical in the design of the successful LaTrobe Institute of Molecular Science facility. Regeneration, Refurbishment & Re-Use Brining existing buildings up to modern standards, particularly when budgets are tight, can make a real difference. Improving the quality, amenity and efficiency of internal spaces can provide a solid foundation on which a proper maintenance program can be implemented to effectively prolong the building’s life span for 30 years or more. Incorporating sustainable technology is easier than ever and there are ample opportunities to implement a suite of highefficiency building features, all presented within a design framework, in a cost-effective manner We take into consideration capital, energy, operational and maintenance costs, equipment life expectancy and reliability and ease of operation and maintenance. Where buildings need to remain operational, we are well versed in complex decanting and staging works to ensure minimum disruption to your facilities.

house the new floors. New vertical steel trusses are used to provide the lateral stability of the overall building.

The building has been re-designed to comply with the current BCA regulations to create the most energy saving solution possible.

The objective of the project was to provide additional floor areas to the existing building to suit the proposed new usage. Due to the limited land area and the boundary restrictions, this could only be achievable by extending the structure up.

The result is a structure within an existing structure where the most of the original building components are utilised and integrated into a new structural system.

The air conditioning design was improved over the previous existing design by providing a greater number of individually controlled perimeter zones to reduce energy usage and lower operational costs. This was further achieved by implementing a dedicated control switch to activate air conditioning in various individual rooms.

The structural challenge was to cater for the additional floors by re-utilizing the existing structure as much as possible. The structural solution selected revolved around the provision of an independent support system for the additional two levels of floor inside the existing building. This strategy enabled the existing building to be used as a shell whereby the existing steel portal frames are ‘stretched’ up to the required height to

The $38m building consists of seven storeys framed up with large span post-tensioned floor slabs supported on reinforced concrete columns; and three lecture theatres with tiered seating. The structure exists on a sloping site hence the ground floor is partly ‘slab on ground’ and partly suspended with an undercroft level beneath the suspended area. One of the structural design challenges in this project was a 16m long transfer beam on Level 4, spanning over the main lecture theatre, where no internal columns were allowed due to architectural reasons. The beam had to support a column at midspan holding up three levels of floor structure on top.

The teaching spaces include a state of the art teaching GP practice, as well as two dedicated simulation laboratories and one rehabilitation gymnasium. The support of new suspended slabs and roof structures (including ‘green’ roofs) necessitated innovative design and strengthening of existing structural members to carry significant additional loadings. This 3 level building is located on the Armidale Hospital site. It is located adjacent to the emergency department access roadway meaning this roadway required 24/7 access. Due to the sloping site, the ground floor was actually below ground and more like a basement level at the rear of the building. As a result, we detailed a cantilever retaining wall incorporating

appropriate roadways barriers connected at the top so that the roadway remained open 24/7 whilst the excavation & construction took place.

Central to the design of the Wakefield Street Campus is the acknowledgement and respect for the historic fabric of the building combined with an honest expression of materials and finishes. Central to the campus are 3 x multipurpose teaching spaces with the ability to open in to 1 large space. It is a 24 hour facility for students of the university. This $25m 3 storey building provides a focus on multidisciplinary glycoscience research and includes a basement animal holding facility accessible at the rear of the building with loading dock facilities. Requiring strict Quarantine and sterilisation requirements, this 5 level building forms an extension to the existing G24 Science 1 & G25 Glycomics 2 buildings (also done by Meinhardt) which now seamlessly integrates the three buildings to form a significant glycoscience research precinct.

This facility was on a steep sloping site as well as being built up against an existing building. The new building basement level was lower than the existing building meaning careful detailing & construction was required. We detailed a cantilever bored pile retaining wall as close as possible to the existing building to both avoid interrupting the operations of the existing building as well as allowing excavation to be carried out in one stage.

KIOSC (The Knox Innovation, Opportunity and Sustainability Centre) is a two storey training hub centre/facility, including labs, for Swinburne University. Its design incorporates the concept of sustainable building practice, which in itself will facilitate students learning and understanding of environmental sustainability. The main feature of the building is the front facade and roof. The first structural design challenge was to design the thin sun blades of no more than 75mm structural thickness throughout the front north facade. These blades will then taper to visually create a thin line at the edge of the roof. Furthermore, the brief also called for no visual obstructions (ie. columns) from behind the glass facade. The design solution was to create a series of steel frames, some of which will function as columns to support the main Glulam roof beams. They also perform as an extension of the Glulam

Capability

roof beams themselves to create the ‘cantilevered roof’ look. All the blades are then tied together at the roof level via a horizontal braced diaphragm to provide lateral stability due to wind and vertical load eccentricity. The second design challenge was to create a cranked/uninterrupted timber roof beam look through the building section. This was made possible via a thin fabricated ‘Z’ steel bracket that performs as an extension of the concrete column underneath. This bracket is then sandwiched and concealed inside the main Glulam roof beams.

We have provided building services for 28 dialysis clinics through Australia and New Zealand for Nephrocare. Nephrocare are the largest private provided of dialysis clinics in Australia. Each site has required a unique design but the client has similar requirements for each facility. We have developed a common design solution to create the most comfortable spaces for patients during their procedures. We took an engineered approach to air distribution utilising swirl type diffusers to reduce drafts, significantly improving the operational environment.

The project was shortlisted for a World Architecture Award in the Education Category (2013)
