More and more people these days are interested in spending their holidays with family at a home away from home. Ideally, a holiday home should be somewhere in an appealing and convenient location and which offers greater privacy than a hotel but with many of the facilities and conveniences of a resort. Of course, a holiday home should also be close to restaurants and other places of interest in the area. This volume of Smart Living offers you plenty of tips to choosing your very own holiday home, be it a spectacular condominium residence lapped by the waters of the Gulf of Thailand or a spacious family-size villa in the north of Thailand. Take a look at the outstanding selections available right now in Hua Hin – Thailand’s up-and-coming beach resort of choice – and Chiang Mai, a long-time favourite of those who prefer the cooler environment of the hills and the distinctive culture of the ancient kingdom of Lanna. As usual, we are presenting plenty of new ideas on home décor and equipment, plants and gardens, lifestyle features, in-trend fashion and design products, and much more to make your place in the sun the ultimate holiday home. Finally – many would say most importantly – we have some great new suggestions to indulge the eternal Thai love of food. Our fine dining recommendations cover the gamut of cuisines and styles and are mostly located in Bangkok, so you don’t have to travel too far to try them. Live right and live smart – with this latest issue of Smart Living. Lawrence Neal

The perfect match for your kitchen Sub-Zero and Wolf
The latest product rollout is the most sweeping ever: more advanced preservation features in Sub-Zero integrated refrigeration, now in more sizes for more kitchens; a new menu of diverse exterior styles and new refinements in performance for Wolf says Mr Yam Churn Meng, Managing Director of KitchenArt (Thailand) Co.,Ltd. KitchenArt is responsible for sales distribution of Sub Zero and Wolf for Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam (as seen in picture with his wife Khun Karen Gonzago)
S
ub-Zero is the enduring symbol of the possibilities of what a kitchen can be, Wolf is the symbol of all that the kitchen can do.
Sub Zero was founded in 1945 by Westye Bakke a world pioneer in ultra-low temperature storage - which is how the firm got its name. It was always Westye’s groundbreaking products that first made refrigeration a reality for the modern home. A businessman and an inspired engineer, he was driven by a personal motive: he needed a reliable domestic fridge himself to store insulin for his diabetic son Bud. Sub Zero forever changed kitchen design with the exceptional quality, beauty and innovative technology of its equipment.
Sub-Zero’s refrigeration products keep food fresher for longer. Each refrigerator and freezer area has its own dedicated, sealed system with compressor and evaporator, so fresh and frozen foods maintain their individual integrity — and maintain them much longer. The patented air purification system on the built-in series was inspired by a similar system developed for NASA. Every 20 minutes, it scrubs the air of ethylene gas naturally emitted by apples, melons, peaches and other produce. This gas hastens spoilage and creates bitterness, wilting and discoloring in other vegetables and fruits including lettuce, tomatoes and citrus fruits.
Wolf brings its own lineage for more than 70 years of expertise with professional cooking appliances. Acquired by Sub Zero in 2000, with its superior performance and leading-edge design, Wolf instruments fuel a passion for cooking.
Sub-Zero products are timeless. They are designed to be an iconic piece within the home for years to come, not to mimic the latest design fad. Few things have the looks and quality to stand the test of time, but Sub-Zero’s design integrity allows it to blend effortlessly with any kitchen equipment and any kitchen style.
Together, the corporate companions of Sub Zero and Wolf combine beautiful, flexible design and proprietary, high performance technology to create the ideal uncompromised kitchen.
Since it is built to last, no matter how many times you remodel the kitchen its good looks will endure, with superior-grade components and meticulous hand craftsmanship that will ensure decades of high performance.
16 SMART LIVING
Wolf means cooking with greater control and enjoying more delicious results. Dual convection cooking is an integral science in the line of built-in ovens and dual fuel ranges, yielding results so elegant, fast and consistent, it may feel like a revelation. Wolf built-in ovens and dual fuel ranges feature 10 powerful cooking modes. Each employs a unique combination of convection current with element-specific heat for consistent, professional results. Every Wolf oven is built in the USA using high-quality materials and components, assembled with precision, and tested for ultimate reliability. The same quality principles apply to Sub-Zero’s corporate companion. Every new material is scrutinized before being released to assembly where a finely-tuned attention to detail and craftsmanship ensures a reliable, well-built product. Sub-Zero and Wolf strive to offer consumers choices that support the commitment to living green. Currently 16 appliances have earned the EPA’s Energy Star qualification. For example, the ICBBI-36S/S refrigerator uses less energy than a 100-watt light bulb. Many other “energy efficient” products that use less energy than traditional appliances are offered.
NEW GENERATION LAUNCH The latest product rollout is the most sweeping ever: more advanced preservation features in Sub-Zero integrated refrigeration, now in more sizes for more kitchens; a new menu of diverse exterior styles and new refinements in performance for Wolf. More ways to match Sub-Zero and Wolf products in your kitchen designs.
The Integrated Series, Rethought: The new line of integrated models reflects the innovative thinking that has made Sub-Zero a specialized leader in both the science of freshness and the art of kitchen design. Preserve What Matters with New Performance Features: Integrated products now have more of the industryleading preservation features of Sub-Zero built-in refrigeration, including air purification, water filtration, and low-temp, highhumidity produce drawers.
Fresh Design Ideas, Inside and Out: Integrated products are now available in more widths (from a slim 457mm to a capacious 914mm), and all are easier-than-ever to install precisely and in coordination with Wolf cooking appliances. Bold New Looks, Greater Cooking Prowess: Wolf products provide precise control of heat and airflow that is unmatched by any other home cooking brand. The new line of products carries on the tradition of cooking performance and adds three striking new design options.
Tastier Results than Ever: New M Series ovens from Wolf have a redesigned dual convection system, and the difference is one you can see and taste. Preheating is fast, temperatures are uniform, and the results are delicious. Dig Into a New Menu of Design Choices: Contemporary, transitional and professional. Three new coordinating lines of built-in ovens and cooktops in more widths offer tasty new ways to customize kitchen designs of all types and sizes.
WHY HIGH-END DEVELOPMENTS PREFER SUB ZERO AND WOLF High-end projects set the highest standards and they expect the best from all their suppliers. Sub-Zero and Wolf aim to exceed their expectations. From New York to Dubai, and London to Singapore, the world’s leading developers know there’s only one choice when it comes to iconic kitchen appliances. Handcrafted in America from stainless steel, Sub Zero and Wolf make a statement about a project that no other brand can. Unlike some manufacturers, Sub Zero and Wolf are specialists, striving to make the very best refrigeration and cooking appliances possible. Building Cities Going beyond entrepreneurship in architecture
T
hroughout its 30 years in business, leading local multi-disciplinary firm of design professionals and consultants Architects 49 has been firmly committed to inculcating an architectural culture among the Thai architectural community. “Over the past three decades, we have constantly questioned the role we have played in building Thailand’s cities. That has inspired us to create the project “Building Cities” to celebrate our 30th anniversary this year. Architects 49 wants to showcase the capability of Thai architects through its outstanding and award-winning projects both in Thailand and overseas,” says Prabhakorn Vadanyakul, Managing Director of Architects 49 and a renowned architect in his own right.
22 SMART LIVING
Prabhakorn adds with pride that integrity as well as professionalism are at the heart of all the firm’s work. Despite the intense competition in the architecture business, the company has consistently refused to pay any commission to win projects.
Prabhakorn Vadanyakul Managing Director of Architects 49
Architects must come up with designs that are unique and feature a strong sense of identity. Another important task will be to preserve the culture and way of life, both of which have an effect on designs.
While Thai architects are today comparable to their Asean counterparts, Thai architectural consultants must prepare for greater challenges. When the Asean Economic Community (AEC) comes into effect, Thai architects will be able to take advantage of technology transfers and exchanges of ideas with international professionals, especially those in Singapore.
Poor English language skills mean that communication remains a weakness of Thai architects. As architecture is without doubt one of the careers that will be affected by the massive relocation of professionals under the AEC framework, language training is an urgent need for Thailand’s architects. There is also a shortage of architects in some fields throughout the region, such as in landscape architecture.
Local architectural firms, meanwhile, will be required to elevate the standard of architectural services to cope with the tougher competition in the region.
Prabhakorn notes that social values pose another challenge to local architects, as most Thai people still prefer international architectural consultants despite the
significantly higher cost. Architects 49 Group is not just an architectural design firm but also an institute that places great importance on the value of people in the belief that a good society will be created by good people, and that good cities will be created by quality architects. That’s why the executives at Architects 49 continue to devote their knowledge and experience to helping young architects. While Bangkok has undergone rapid development with modern buildings and infrastructure continuing to shoot up like mushrooms to cope with the growing urbanisation, Prabhakorn says his imagination and inspiration for building cities remain fresh and untarnished. He proposes that Bangkok should have a greater number of trees. Rather than
cutting trees along the roads to avoid branches making contact with overhead electricity lines, the trees can be planted along the mass transit routes. In addition, Bangkok requires more public parks and public reservoirs. He also proposes building a walking bridge over Chao Phraya River to allow the city’s residents to walk and shop along the bridge. The Chao Phraya is Thailand’s main river yet its riverside plots are occupied by private properties. A pier over the Chao Phraya River crossing over to Bang Krachao in Samut Prakan province, which is regarded as the last green area close to Bangkok and one of its green lungs, is another great dream. Architects 49 has gained recognition through its award-winning projects in Thailand and overseas. Its best known
projects include the BU Landmark Complex, the King Power Complex and Prince Mahidol Hall. A firm believer in the teamwork approach, the company seeks to develop trust and a team relationship with clients to further its own distinctive individuality. This year, Architects 49 enjoyed another great success by winning the contract to design the PTT’s learning centre in Rayong province. PTT has set aside Bt10 billion to develop the Rayong Institute of Science and Technology (RAIST) and the Rayong Science Academy (RASA) as part of its plans to boost long-term business sustainability. PTT also aims to turn the university into a top research institute by 2020.

KidZania Bangkok
Igniting kids’ career inspirations through the ultimate learn-and-play experience
C
hildren everywhere dream about being grownup and independent. Today, there’s a place in Bangkok where they can explore the world of adults in a fun way. It’s called “KidZania” – the land of cool kids.
Opening in March 2013, KidZania Bangkok is the 12th KidZania in the world with the largest indoor facility. It’s an edutainment theme-park offering youngsters aged 4-14 the ultimate learn-and-play experience through role playing of more than 80 professions. Occupying 10,000 sq. m. of space, this amazingly life-like, kid-sized KidZania city lets children pick out the careers they are interested in or want to pursue in the future, and then assume the roles such as doctor, police, firefighter, reporter, pilot, air crew, chef, actors and beauticians in mock workplaces called “establishments.” To make the city appears as authentic as possible, it is built with streets and monuments, a central bank, hospital, university, theatre, retail store and shopping mall. Divided into three zones: Airport, City Square and Suburb, KidZania’s establishments are modeled after real-world companies who have partnered with KidZania Bangkok, for example, B-Quick autorepair shop, McDonald’s, PTT gas station, CP-Meiji, 7-Eleven, Oishi and Air Asia, who has brought with it a real cockpit and passenger seats for would-be pilots and flight attendants.
26 SMART LIVING
At each establishment, children are instructed and guided by “zupervisors” on how to perform real-life job activities. Parents are not allowed to go inside the establishment and help their children to accomplish their missions. It takes children around 20-30 minutes at each workplace, meaning they can role play six to eight professions a day. While having an enjoyable time by trying out different roles, children learn about certain career principles, teamwork as well as social and real-life decision-making skills. Furthermore, the role playing will develop skills and behavior patterns that could benefit their creativity development and foster their self-esteem and self-confidence, which help them prepare for the real world. One of the most popular activities among the kids at KidZania Bangkok is to play the role of the firefighter. The simulated scenario starts when the kids are first briefed on fire safety and some simple protocols. After that, the fire station receives a call that a fire has broken out at a hotel, then the kids are guided into a fire truck with an alarm siren to rush to the scene before finally joining the process of containing the fire. Another activity the kids shouldn’t miss is to take the role of the pilot to gain exciting take-off and landing simulation experience. Not only providing kids with career motivation and entertaining life-like experiences of performing real jobs, KidZania teaches them a little bit about financial literacy. Upon entering this miniature city, aside from a boarding pass, each kid will be handed a cheque worth 50 KidZos, which can be cashed or deposited to earn interest at the replica bank. They will earn different amount of KidZos for performing jobs and sometimes have to spend their KidZos to buy some goods and services such as for checking their eye sight, learning driving and attending courses to get a university degree. These will teach them about basic money management and the value of work. Like other KidZania branches worldwide, KidZania Bangkok has laid great emphasis on safety. At the entrance, every visitor is fitted with an ID security bracelet to allow KidZania staff to track and locate them. The bracelet can only be removed by the staff and there’s just one entrance and exit for visitors. With this safe and secure environment, parents can sit back and relax in the spacious Parent’s Lounge while their kids are working out. For kids under 4, there’s also a dedicated section for toddlers called “Urbano’s House,” where they can have fun with plenty of tot-friendly activities. Originated in Mexico City in 1996 by Mr. Xavier Lopez Ancona, KidZania presently has 15 sites in 12 countries including Japan, South Korea, United Arab Emirates (Dubai), Mexico, Portugal, Kuwait, India and Eygpt. Another five more are due to open in 2014, including sites in the United Kingdom and Russia.

Based on the Japanese comfort food concept, the restaurant provides over 60 dishes of uniquely-tasty and rustic Japanese cuisine, including must-try, popular Japanese menu items such as Tempura and Ramen, as well as some whimsically-created Japanese-influenced desserts. To complement the scrumptious savory dishes, the restaurant offers premium Japanese beer and an extensive range of wines and sake, with award-winning sommeliers to assist diners with their selections. According to KU DÉ TA Bangkok’s Executive Chef Jonathan Maza, who has previously worked at upscale Japanese restaurants Sansei, Geisha and Nobu, Izakaya’s food concept is to best maintain the flavours and distinct ingredients of traditional Japanese comfort food. To achieve this, the restaurant selects only the finest and freshest ingredients to prepare all dishes, such as fish sent directly from Japan and organic, free-range pork and chicken from Thailand, while the cooking techniques are authentically Japanese, some of them being very laborious and time-consuming. With its Japanese comfort food and casual dining concept, Izakaya has a wide range of prices to satisfy everyone, not just the deep-pocketed guests. For example, its Bento lunch sets start from just Bt350.
Recommended dishes of Izakaya include Niku Shallot (Skewered Beef Short Ribs with Black Pepper Teriyaki), Saikyo Misoyaki (Marinated Black Cod with Saikyo Miso Glaze), Kakuni (Braised Pork Belly with Onsen Tamago), Pork Chop (House Made Tonkatsu Sauce and Wafu Dressing) and Ribu Buta (Pork Spare Ribs with Tobanjan Glaze). Sweet treats at Izakaya are creatively designed by Pastry Chef Jason Licker with a perfect marriage of the premium Japanese ingredients with French or western cooking techniques. Some savory ingredients such as Gyoza sheets are transformed into wonderful desserts, for example, Gyoza (Phuket pineapple marinated with lemongrass and braised to perfection, then deep fried in a handmade gyoza skin and accompanied with young coconut sorbet). The most popular dessert is Matcha (a tart made from the Kyoto’s finest matcha powder with exploding matcha lava, paired with bitter chocolate gelato). Izakaya accommodates 96 guests with an open kitchen concept to allow diners to be part of the fun and lively activities in the kitchen. Designed in an old-style Japanese social setting with tasteful interior décor, the restaurant provides a cozy and friendly dining experience you can share with your friends or loved ones, either for lunch, dinner or late at night, with unparalleled views of the Bangkok skyline or magnificent vistas of the glittering city night on the 39th floor of the Sathorn Square Building.

For lunch, try out the Cantonese dim sum, with delectable offerings such as steamed shrimp dumpling with fish roe, steamed seaweed rolled with shrimp, steamed shrimp dumpling with sago and salted egg, and steamed barbecued pork bun. The signature dish, available for both lunch and dinner, is Peking duck cooked in the Chyna style, giving a new twist on that most magnificent and traditional of all Chinese dishes. An excellent soup to get things started is the double-boiled abalone and sea asparagus with root of ginseng. Other fabulous creations to try include
crispy fresh prawn with wasabi sauce and fresh mango, wok-fried snow fish with salt and black pepper, and the stir-fried fresh scallop with xo sauce and gingko nuts. Take a trip to the top of Thailand And get there conveniently with Bangkok Airways - Asia’s Boutique Airline
A
t the end of the year, around December through February, Thais flock to the northern province of Chiang Mai to enjoy the annual cool temperatures and clear blue skies of the cool season. But this fair city, the Rose of the North as it’s affectionately known, has much more to offer than just nice weather. The heartland of the ancient Lanna Kingdom – the Land of a Million Rice Fields – Chiang Mai is rich in architectural and cultural treasures, with spectacular temples and living traditions. Perhaps even more notable is the natural heritage of the
province, with highlands, the country’s tallest mountain - Doi Inthanon, several national parks, and rich forests and biodiversity. Chiang Mai has more recently become something of a Mecca for naturalists, particularly birdwatchers, as well as sports enthusiasts who enjoy biking, running and more in the cooler and less humid conditions of the north. Several transport options exist to get to the walled city of Chiang Mai, around 700 km north of Bangkok, but easily the fastest and most convenient is to take a direct flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport with Bangkok Airways – Asia’s Boutique Airline.

Getting around once you arrive… Chiang Mai is one of the biggest provinces in Thailand with lots to see and do. But getting around by public transport can be a tiring and time-consuming proposition. By far and away the best way of getting around to see what the province has to offer (and also what the surrounding provinces have) is by hiring a car. With your own car for a few days, a week or a month, you can get to see all the major sites as well as those ‘unseen’ places, efficiently and economically. Thai Rent A Car is one of the leading car hire agencies in Thailand and the northern region. With over 7,000 vehicles for hire throughout the country, the agency offers a convenient pick-up and drop-off service for drivers aged 21 and up
who hold a valid license. Thai Rent A Car has more than 10 different automobile models to choose from, ranging from the 1200 cc Nissan March right on up to the 2000 cc Toyota Camry, the luxurious Mercedes-Benz C200, 2500-cc SUVs or pick-ups, and the 2500 cc Hyundai H1 five-door van. For those not keen on driving the steep gradients and winding roads of the highlands, it’s possible to hire a chauffeur-driven vehicle. Thai Rent A Car has a counter at the Domestic Arrivals Hall of Chiang Mai Airport (Exit 1) on Tel. 0-2737-8888 where you can conveniently pick up a vehicle on arrival in the city. The writing corner adjoining the sitting room, which is narrower and shorter than the other rooms, uses coiled wire to create an innovative fish mural, which successfully links the two areas together seamlessly. The villas also draw strongly on the cultural influences of the various ethnic groups of northern Thailand and the hilltribes through the decorative items used. Each of the bedrooms makes use of light and colour in different and distinctive ways. The master bedroom has a projecting balcony with views overlooking the villa and gardens as well as the nearby pagoda of Wat Lok Moli. Preserving the ancient Thai healing arts
Chetawan Retreat Resort
D
espite the ongoing development of modern medical treatments and procedures, Thai traditional medical care is increasingly gaining interest among working people, athletes, patients and therapists. Not surprisingly, Chetawan Retreat Resort, a branch of the pioneering Wat Po Thai Traditional Medical School, is welcoming more and more Thais and foreign visitors to experience personalized healthcare and well-being programmes.
Preeda Tangtrongchitr
Nestled on a peaceful 14-rai area on Salaya-Nakhon Chai Si Road, the tropical Chetawan Retreat Resort provides various healthcare treatment programmes with professional masseurs skilled in providing true body and mind relaxation, restoration and rejuvenation, which is believed to bring greater longevity. The Thai Traditional Massage is the ideal recuperation therapy for anyone who needs rehabilitation after suffering injury or simply from too much stress in their daily lives. The 73-year-old Preeda Tangtrongchitr, a second-generation therapist from the Wat Po Thai Traditional Medical School, which is the first Thai Medical School to gain approval from the Thai Ministry of Education in 1955, continues his strong intention to preserve the ancient traditions of Thai healing arts, including both Thai massage and ascetic self-stretching (Rue-Si Datton), as part of the country’s national heritage.
50 SMART LIVING
Preeda said that foreign students coming from more than 10 countries including Japan, France, Germany, Australia, Italy and Israel, account for around 20 percent of the current student intake. Many of them take a two-month full course of 800 hours to become professional therapists, doctors, or masseurs at spas around the world. At the resort, a basic course is for 30 minutes spread out over 180 minutes which includes Wat Po Thai massage, foot massage, special infant and child massage, hand spa, oil massage, herbal steaming, and Thai massage with herbal compression. Chetawan Traditional Massage School provides general packages from two days one night to five days four nights, and covering ailments such as office syndrome, lower back pain, maternal healthcare, re-energize, rejuvenate, anti-cellulite, elderly healthcare, and women healthcare. The advanced courses ranges from 15 days to two months (800 hours), offering students a course in theoretical studies covering health science and traditional medicine, Thai therapeutic massage and advanced Thai ascetic self stretching, as well as professional training.
The professional Thai massage programme teaches students the fundamentals of Thai Massage Points and Lines for relief of more than 50 minor ailments, such as muscle sprains and pains, tennis elbow, stiffness of the neck, lower back pain, muscle cramps, muscle fatigue, muscle stiffness, muscular discomfort, and nervous tension. Accommodation, a swimming pool, sauna, aquatic exercise, fitness, cuisine therapy, and recreational facilities are available for both customers and students. Preeda said that Chetawan Traditional Massage School also provides massage services for athletes such as golfers, tennis players, mountain climbers, and cyclists. Chulalongkorn University has proposed forming a long-term partnership to open a Thai traditional medical clinic after taking seven years of research. The university sends students off to take courses at Chetawan. Though Preeda has transferred management of day-to-day operations to his son Serat Tangtrongchitr, who changed his career from mechanical engineering, he remains determined to upgrade the school to become a college and plans to develop an elderly healthcare centre in the future. 

T
he name “klay”, a Thai word roughly meaning “becoming”, is hardly a name most people would associate with a tree or plant. But klay is in fact an attractive flowering shrub of the Annonaceae family that is found only in Thailand, Burma and Malaysia. It was first identified in Thailand by the famous British botanist A. Keith at Bang Saphan, Prachuap Khiri Khan province and was subsequently given the scientific name Mitrephora keithii Ridl. in his honour. Klay is the smallest shrub in the genus Mitrephora with a height of 2-3 metres and attractive, alternating branches. The alternating leaves (monochasial branching) are around 5-10 cm long and 3-5 cm across, with smooth glossy blades. The shrub produces beautifully coloured single flowers of around 2.5-3 cm across with three outer yellow petals and three inner petals of yellow with stripes of amaranth. The flowers bloom for about 2-3 days and are mildly fragrant at dusk and dawn. Normally, flowers will bloom on every branch of the shrub and virtually every day of the year. The tree produces slightly hairy cylindrical fruit which can be eaten when ripe, with small round brown seeds of around 4-5 mm diameter.

56 SMART LIVING
Klay is a native flower species of Thailand, suitable for cultivation in large pots with loose, well-drained soil. Alternatively it can be grown out in the garden, either in a shady spot where the leaves remain attractive but fewer flowers are produced, or under direct sun, where more flowers are produced but the edges of the leaves are apt to burn. Ideally, it should receive muted sunlight or full sun in the mornings only.
With its growing popularity among gardeners, the species has been selectively bred to create various attractive varieties, including pink, purple, orange, red and yellow flowering varieties, as well as narrow-petal and clustered-flower types. Exceptionally colourful flowers may only be produced under certain environmental conditions and temperatures, and may also depend on the method of propagation.
Klay is available at stores selling fragrant or hard-to-find jungle shrubs. Usually, the price depends on the shape of the shrub and the colour of the flower, and is up to the negotiating skills of the seller and buyer. Sometimes it’s also possible to exchange other plants for a nice shrub.
Whatever variety is chosen for the garden, the size and characteristics of the full-grown shrub as well as the growing conditions should be taken into consideration to ensure an attractive blossoming tree that will provide shade and enjoyment for many years to come.
