“Dear Tina Valentino,

Your membership application has been approved by a committee of the Governing Board and it is expected that you will be formally elected a member on December 14.” This framed, yellowed, dusty letter from the Poetry Society of America has been a prized possession since it arrived in 1984 and it hangs on the wall directly above my computer where I can see it and be constantly reminded of how I stalked the mailbox, waiting, wondering if my work was good enough for the oldest poetry organization in the United States. Inspired by my published mentors among the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters at Rosary College (now Dominican University in River Forest), I chiseled hundreds of sonnets and free verse poems, a few haiku, even an epic and sent them all over the country. A handful were published and, for my efforts, I received copies of the publications. No pay or recognition, just another gratifying envelope in the mailbox. Clearly, I am no poet laureate.

News of Maya Angelou’s death may be have been met with mixed reactions. Some folks have no idea who she was; others would be more interested if she had been a young Hollywood star who overdosed; and some of us realize we have lost a friend and neighbor as well as an American treasure—not merely because Oprah Winfrey doted on her but because her honest, difficult, often traumatic life strikes a nerve. She wasn’t always “celebrated.” She had been a cook, a prostitute and a night club dancer amid failed relationships and the tumultuous Civil Rights movement, while carrying the baggage of a chaotic and disturbing childhood.

And yet she prevailed. She prevailed through seven autobiographies, three books of essays and books of poetry, plays, movies and television shows, countless awards and more than 30 honorary doctoral degrees.

Angelou liked to wear a hat when she wrote; so do I. A favorite baseball cap on backwards usually does the trick for me at crunch time. She firmly believed that “words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.” So do I. These may be the only two things we have in common but her legitimate, unpretentious, humble human experience is a bond that can and should be shared with many—particularly with Proviso East and West, Walther, Trinity, Fenwick, Guerin Prep, Immaculate Conception, Nazareth, Fenwick, Leyden, OPRF and all high school and college graduates. One of her books would not only make a fitting gift—but an inspiring send-off for young adults heading into an uncertain world. She wrote: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

Aim high. All the best to the Class of 2014.

With the passage of the Firearm Concealed Carry Act in July 2013, Illinois became the last state in the nation to allow residents to carry a concealed firearm. But who can you trust to train you?

amazing neighbors: Mike DeCarlo and Paul Rossi At first glance, this may not seem like your typical Neighbors Magazine story but, as you read on, it will become evident that two young, local men from Melrose Park with a passion for excellence are fast distinguishing themselves among the growing list of individuals who are trying to capitalize on the new Illinois law that allows eligible residents to carry a concealed weapon.

Beginning in January 2014, the Illinois State Police (ISP) began accepting applications for the much-anticipated Concealed Carry permit and by February 28, 2014, the first permits were being issued.

However, as early as midDecember 2013, ISP Director Hiram Grau was already addressing complaints—before the first permit had even been issued—about firearms instructors defrauding students and circumventing the training procedures required by law after

accepting hefty payments from the eager-to-learn applicants. “Anyone caught abusing the system could potentially face state and federal fraud charges, including jail time,” Grau stressed. House Bill 4290, just recently introduced by State Rep. Ed Sullivan, Jr., would guarantee jail time as well as a permanent ban from ever being an ISP-approved instructor in the future for those who improperly certify applicants.

Of the more than 2,700 firearms instructors currently certified in Illinois, the choice can be overwhelming for the skyrocketing number of lawabiding men and women interested in signing up for gun safety training. Here in the western suburbs, however, two instructors have set themselves apart from the pack: lifelong friends Paul Rossi and Mike DeCarlo, both of Melrose Park, felt compelled to start their own company called Neighbors • 6

5 Star Firearm Training to ensure that area residents would have the opportunity to receive the most comprehensive training possible along with the benefit of their personal experiences and expertise in the field. DeCarlo, who serves as the instructor for the Melrose Park Police Department where he has been on the force for the past 10 years, is also an NRA Pistol Instructor, Glock Armorer and Range Safety Officer, among other certifications such as Head Firearms, Rifle, Shotgun, Use of Force and Shooting Simulator instructor. Rossi, a graduate of Triton College with a degree in Criminal Justice, has studied the Illinois Concealed Carry Act extensively and goes above and beyond to ensure that every applicant is armed with the very best technical and practical knowledge as well as a permit and weapon. story continues on page 22

FREE Family Health Fair at Crossroads Church of Hillside on June 21 Crossroads Church of Hillside, located at 5152 Butterfield Road (next to Luurs Nursery at Taft and Butterfield) is hosting its 2nd Annual FREE Family Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, June 21.

Children’s dentistry prevention information will be provided by dental students from UIC and a local dentist will offer dental screenings. Celar Chiropractic will offer chair massages and Illinois Spinal together with Celar Chiropractic will combine to provide spinal screenings. There will also be free counseling sessions by Dearborne Counseling Center for children, teenagers and adults. Miss Mary Baker will be on hand to explain debt counseling for seniors, veterans and the disabled.

Other highlights include an exercise class taught by LA Fitness Trainers, line dancing instruction and staff from the Children’s Clinic of Oak Park and Serenity Living will be present; blood pressure screenings and glucose screenings and guests are welcome to learn about nutrition, take home a bag of food, and adult, children and baby clothes. Lunch will be served and Bibles will be given to anyone who wants one.

Brochures from Proviso Township, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association will be available. Everything at the event will be free. $5 Films Every Tuesday at Classic Cinemas

Music in the Park at VPD’s Grant Park on June 26

Classic Cinemas invites area residents to take advantage of its $5 Tuesdays program, a weekly value where patrons can purchase tickets to showings at any of 11 Classic Cinemas Theatres for only $5 on Tuesdays (except for the Ogden or Tivoli Theatres). The price includes new releases, with 3D showings offered at an additional $2. This program excludes special events. FREE Diabetic Retinopathy Screening on June 11 at Republic Bank in Berkeley A FREE Diabetic Retinopathy Screening for persons with diabetes or those at risk for diabetes will be held on Wednesday, June 11 from 1 to 4 pm at Republic Bank, 5500 St. Charles Road in Berkeley.

The screening is made possible by the Bellwood Lions Club and the Lions of Illinois Foundation and is made possible through the generous donations of community members.

The quality of life for people with diabetic retinopathy and other retinal disorders, such as macular degeneration, is dramatically impacted. Since early detection of such disorders is critical, persons with diabetes or those 55 and older are encouraged to take advantage of this free screening.

Maywood’s Fred Hampton Family Aquatic Center is set to open its 2014 swim season under the management of the West Cook YMCA. Located at 300 Fred Hampton Way, the pool will open for the summer season on Sunday, June 8 and continue through Sunday, August 17 from Noon to 7 pm.

DeCarlo and Rossi have secured space in Westchester for the classroom portion of their instruction and is proud to partner with Article 2 Gun Range, 250 Cortland Avenue in Lombard, to train applicants in the areas of weapon handling. “As for me, it just seemed like a natural progression to take everything that I know and have learned over the years and share it with others, giving everyone the opportunity to defend themselves,” says DeCarlo, a second generation police officer. Rossi, the grandson of a respected 32-year veteran of the Melrose Park Police Department, shares DeCarlo’s sentiments.

“At the end of the day, what we’re doing is a good thing because we want the very best for our students,” adds Rossi. “Already, there are too many instructors who are in it only for the money, cutting corners, skipping chapters or catering to big groups and not the little guy. In the past six months since the state began accepting permit applications, hundreds of students have received the bad news that their training is invalid and their requests for permits have been denied. We designed our business for the person with little or no experience.

We work with everyone personally and help them to better understand all aspects of owning a weapon from cleaning and storage to the size of gun and holster they should consider buying. Guns are not cheap and if you buy the wrong one, you will have accomplished nothing.”

5 Star has been gaining popularity among women and senior citizens as applicants, perhaps because they are the most victimized in today’s society. Recent studies have shown that United States residents age 65 and older are now the most likely of all citizens to own a gun. Numbers for women, college students and even disabled people are on the rise as these groups hope to even the playing field when defending themselves against an aggressor. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, have a valid State ID, be approved for a Firearm Owners’ ID Card (FOID) and complete the curriculum before applying for the Concealed Carry permit. When one completes firearms training and

is approved in Illinois, “reciprocity” allows that permit holder to carry in 37 other states.

“We cover all the laws in class, where you can and can’t carry, and our video presentations and hands-on demonstrations help keep the classroom portion of training interesting. We’ve had great feedback from our students and it encourages us to continue our efforts. More and more people are interested in signing up as a group, getting some of their friends together and going through the process that way instead of signing up individually. Women sometimes prefer to take the class with friends and it works out great. Class size varies but our ideal class is approximately 10 students so that everyone can get as much attention as they need. Private lessons are also available,” said DeCarlo.

“We’ve had a few couples sign up, boyfriend and girlfriend or husband and wife and they learn together, which makes more sense than the husband going out and buying a gun for the house and the wife not knowing how to use it properly,” explains Rossi. At the present time, all 5 Star classes are held on weekends but weekday classes will be forming in the near future.

Fees may vary but an average two-day course can range from $250 to $300. NUEVOS HORIZONTES MOVES TO MAIN CAMPUS Triton College’s community center in Melrose Park will move all of its operations and transition its services to the Triton College campus in River Grove. Nuevos Horizontes, located on Main Street in Melrose Park, provides classes and life-skills workshops to non-English speaking area residents.

The courses and services offered at Nuevos will be absorbed by Triton’s School of Continuing Education and Adult Education departments.

“By relocating the students of Nuevos Horizontes to the Triton College campus, our hope is that students will now have easier access toward completing the advanced level ESL and GED courses, transition to credit-bearing classes and pursue their academic and career goals,” said Luisa Hernandez, director of Nuevos Horizontes. The college believes this move will strengthen and facilitate a student’s transition from the college’s ESL/GED classes to pursuing a degree or certificate to also furthering one’s education at a four-year university and/or entering the workforce. Students will have access to the comprehensive support services available on the main campus which will improve student success and advancement into college courses.

The college will implement a new initiative, called Bridges, which speaks to this streamlined process that will connect students with limited English speaking skills to the appropriate channels to achieve their educational and career goals, from high school to after graduating from Triton.

“A commitment of Triton College is not only ensuring every student learns the English language but also provides opportunities for socioeconomic advancement and higher earning potential,” said Dr. Doug Olson, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.

Triton College is taking action to provide a smooth transition for students currently enrolled in classes at Nuevos Horizontes, including providing transportation from the current Nuevos site to the main campus for those students in the pipeline to ensure uninterrupted access and by offering some courses at the college’s extension sites within the district for easier access.

Nuevos Horizontes opened its doors for the first time on August 18, 1981. Nuevos has taken up residence in two former locations within Melrose Park, before settling into its current home at 1708 Main Street in 2001. Nuevos’ operations will fully transition to the Triton College campus for the summer 2014 semester.

The Maywood Finance Department, Animal Control, Police and other department staff and partner agencies will gather behind the Police Department to register Pit Bulls and provide useful information to owners. Fines for violating the Village Pit Bull ordinance range from $50 to $1,000.
