Oscar F. Mayer entered the meat business at the age of 14, when he came to the United States from Bavaria and answered a “Help Wanted” poster for an apprentice at George Weber’s retail meat market in Detroit...In 1883, Oscar and his newly-immigrated brother Gottfried leased a small retail store on Chicago’s near north side. From the beginning it was a huge success with first-day sales totalling $59.
“
From the Oscar Mayer website
What’s for lunch?
Just recently I stumbled on Oscar Mayer’s life story on the Biography channel and found it more fascinating than you might imagine; his legacy, now well over 100 years old, brought to light several significant and timeless mantras to live by—good for this month’s graduates, good for everyone of all ages. First and foremost, like so many of our ancestors, Oscar was a mere 14 years old when he landed on American soil. AND he jumped at the first opportunity to work. A far cry from today’s spoiled brats, no pun intended. At 14, most kids today are unable to converse at the dinner table, do their homework without help or do chores without whining and a visit from Super Nanny—let alone work. But here’s Oscar, an ocean away from familiar teenage faces in distant Bavaria, applying for a job, anxious to learn and grateful for the opportunity to earn a paycheck. Significant and timeless mantra #2: Oscar and his brother pool their talents and their saved wages to open a small retail store of their own. Their sausage-making skills and the pride they took in their products made them a neighborhood favorite. They became so successful and popular that their greedy landlord refused to renew their lease, hoping to hog their booming business for himself. Stealing someone else’s thunder for your own benefit is an idea that never goes out of style; however, as in the case of the backstabbing landlord, you will soon find yourself out of business. And as the Mayer brothers prospered, they would regularly hit that wall again and again, facing off with others who were simply trying to capitalize on their hard work, ingenuity and integrity. Mayer mantra #3: Other companies were making sausages, hams, liverwurst and eventually hot dogs and bacon but that didn’t discourage the brothers. In fact, it inspired them to make deliveries by horse and wagon, expand its facility, patent ideas and distinguish themselves—placing the first full-color newspaper ad ever created by a U.S. meat firm, introducing the Wienermobile in 1936, followed by the Wienerwhistle toys and sponsoring TV shows as early as 1950. They found their “niche,” much like Neighbors has been heralded as a niche publication in an Inlander story written by Randy Craig to enlighten editors and publishers around the country back in 2005. Like Melrose Park’s “Dom the Hot Dog Man” created a legacy from a push cart on Broadway and Elmhurst’s “Hot Dog Lady” stands her ground and fights the Village Board which, just last month, kicked her off the spot where she’s hustled hot dogs for over 20 years, the moral of the story is the same. Maybe not as iconic as Oscar Mayer but essentially the same: “Keep on selling your products, your services and yourself. No one can stop you from succeeding but yourself.” And for giving us freedom to succeed, God bless all of our veterans.

In advertising and other forms of media, it's clear that American society often worships at the altar of youth-including billions spent trying to look or feel young. Against that backdrop, a group of Oak Park-area volunteers has built a movement that celebrates seniors, a group that they define as “anyone 60 years of age or older.” And the latest by-product of their effort comes in the form of Celebrating Seniors Week. Between May 15th and May 22nd, more than 40 events will be held throughout Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park. Nearly all of the events are free of charge for all comers, and every event is free for anyone 60plus. The sessions are geared toward education and entertainment, featuring the creative ideas of community organizations such as libraries, park districts, hospitals and senior service agencies. Kickoff. A kickoff event is on Thursday, May 8 at The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association, 178 Forest Avenue in Oak Park. On that night, the group honors the 2014 "60 Over 60" Class, a collection of men and women whose efforts have made a profound impact on the three communities. Harry Porterfield. The wrap-up event will be highlighted by an address from Harry Porterfield, the 85-year-old news-caster who exemplifies the prototype of an active older adult who still has plenty of contributions to make. The fee for the luncheon, to be held at Concordia University Chicago’s Koehneke Community Center is $25. Four years ago, communicating seniors' vitality and far-reaching impact inspired Jim Flanagan to create the Celebrating Seniors Coalition, the volunteer corps that organizes events each year. A lifelong resident of Oak Park and River Forest, Flanagan is a financial planning expert who specializes in serving people at or near retirement. Now, thanks to the Coalition, many local seniors have received support in the midst of various kinds of difficulties. The non-profit has purchased eyeglasses, hearing aids, mattresses, and even helped some seniors get their teeth fixed. The coalition has assisted seniors in moving by providing a truck and volunteers. Treasure or Trinket: Treasure or Trinket, an antiques road show from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm on Thursday, May 15th at the Oak Park Arms, 408 S. Oak Park Avenue. For more information about that or any other Celebrating Seniors event, visit www.CelebratingSeniors.net or visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/CelebratingSeniors.

CHICK-FIL-A OPENS IN NORTH RIVERSIDE Mayor Hubert Hermanek and the Village Trustees Jason Bianco, Joe Mengoni, Vera Wilt, Debbie Czajka, Matt Decosola and Village Clerk Kathy Ranieri celebrated the grand opening of the 1,800th Chick-fil-A location with owners/operators Alvaro and Alexandra Botero with the Chick-fil-A mascot when the North Riverside store opened its doors at 7201 W. Cermak Road on March 27. Cold temperatures and steady rain did not deter “raving” fans who camped out overnight in the parking lot as part of the traditional Chick-fil-A “First 100” gift card give-away where lucky recipients earned 52 sandwich meals. Chick-fil-A owners Alvaro and Alexandra Botero have not only opened their doors—but they’ve opened their hearts to community. “Our first major campaign was to give away over 5,000 Chick-fil-A sandwiches to schools and businesses in the neighborhood,” said Alexandra Botero. “We also gave away more than 10,000 gift cards to people in the Village and surrounding towns so that they might come in as our guests. We are committed to taking care of the people who take care of our communities,” Botero added. Area residents are encouraged to stop in, drive-thru, call 442-7006 or visit www.chick-fil-a.com. BIG CORNER TAVERN BIKE BASH Also in North Riverside, Big Corner Tavern (BCT), located at 8405 W. Cermak Road, invites bikers to its first summer Bike Bash on Saturday, May 31. Cost to ride is $10 per person or $15 per couple. BCT will open its doors at 9 am and the ride leaves at 10:30 am. Those who sign up will receive complimentary breakfast burritos and return to live music, raffles and a BCT buffet. BCT will soon be announcing events that partner with area non-profits to help raise money for worthy causes. Follow BCT on Facebook, stop in to sign up, visit the website at www.bigcornertavern.com and see their ad on page 15 of this issue of Neighbors.

new play features top local talents in May, Sieck, Nestor Open Door Repertory Company, 902 S. Ridgeland in Oak Park, will launch the world premiere of a new play written by Chicago playwright Ted May, directed by Mary Pat Sieck with songs written by former Buckingham Larry Nestor. This darkly poignant piece charts the uphill climb of local mobster Sam Giancana from the son of poor immigrants in Chicago’s “Little Sicily” to a billionaire entrepreneur and ultimate successor of Al Capone. “No Witness” explores one man’s journey as he negotiates the power struggles and betrayals within the job, the adoration and neglect of his family and the unquenchable thirst for power that led to lucrative deals with the most powerful people of his time—and to his assassination in his Oak Park home. This production is not recommended for students under the age of 14. Opening night is May 1st, 8 pm. Performances are scheduled for Fridays, May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 8 pm; Saturdays, May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 at 8 pm; and Sundays, May 4, 11, 18, 25 and June 1 at 2 pm. For ticket info, visit the website at www.opendoorrep.org or call 342-0810.

fifteen MINUTES River Grove resident Bill “Doc” Dwoinen was honored at the 2014 Pitch and Hit Club annual banquet recently, receiving the Len DiForte Amateur Service Award. Also in attendance were several Major League Baseball players including Steve Delabar, Curtis Granderson, Dean Anna and Neal Cotts. The mission of the Club, which was founded in 1942, is to recognize and honor BILL “DOC” DWOINEN the achievements of those in the baseball community. HONORED For over 40 years, “Doc” Dwoinen patrolled a dugout with a competitive passion, an unsurpassed knowledge of the game and a sense of humor that allowed hundreds of local young men a chance to learn and experience the game. In 1988, Doc founded the Melrose Indians, an 18-22 year old summer collegiate baseball squad. Over a 23-year period that included stops at numerous colleges, multiple league championships and World Series appearances as well as being chosen to play international teams, Doc helped produce over 20 players who went on to play professionally and over a dozen former players who have followed in his footsteps as high school or college coaches. Loyal to the game and the community, Doc has never sought recognition and, for the majority of his career, he has never cashed a paycheck. His payoff has always been the success of his “kids” and sharing his knowledge of the “greatest game there is.” Pictured above, Doc speaks to the crowd, thanking his family and his players for a lifetime of memories.
VICARIATE IV YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS
Three young men, graduates of Sacred Heart School in Melrose Park, were honored with the Vicariate IV Youth Leadership Awards at a banquet in March hosted by Bishop John R. Manz. The awards banquet affirms those students who have made significant contributions, shown extraordinary commitment and demonstrated outstanding leadership in eight categories, which are also the eight components of comprehensive youth ministry as described in “Renewing the Vision.” Pictured with Bishop Manz (second from left) and Sacred Heart Church Pastor Fr. Erwin Friedl (at right) are Sebastian Lorenzo for Justice and Service (for those involved in service programs such as food drives, PADS, mission trips, etc.), Nick Golding and Sam Cruz for Prayer and Worship (those who serve in liturgical roles such as lectors, Eucharistic ministers, cantors, musicians, altar servers, etc.). Sebastian Lorenzo and Sam Cruz attend Guerin Prep High School in River Grove and Nick Golding is a student at Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst. N e i g h b o r s • 28
While a brief mention in the magazine hardly constitutes the fifteen MINUTES of fame they truly deserve, these amazing individuals are truly worthy of their neighbors’ applause for their extra effort—for inspiring us all to do more, give more, making our communities and the world a better place.
WEST SUBURBAN MARKS 100TH ANNIVERSARY West Suburban Medical Center celebrates 100 years of serving the Oak Park community this year and kicked off a year of celebrations with a hospital birthday party. The party featured an exhibit of old photos and newspaper articles gathered from The Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest. Employees shared their own stories: many were born at the hospital, completed residencies, or have worked there for decades. To officially honor the centennial, the Village of Oak Park Board of Trustees unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing West Suburban Medical Center’s centennial anniversary. The proclamation cited West Suburban’s community contributions and exemplified what the hospital accomplished in the past year alone: 41,000 patient days, 158,000 outpatient visits, 57,000 emergency visits, and 5,100 surgeries.

Chicago Mayor CIC AT THE HEART OF Rahm Emanuel and REDEVELOPMENT Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced the launch of Community Investment Corporation's (CIC) new 1-4 Unit Rental Redevelopment Program at a community event last month. This innovative program is among the first in the United States to finance the redevelopment of smaller buildings for affordable rental housing. The 1-4 Unit Rental Redevelopment Program will finance approximately 200 buildings and 400 apartments over three years, helping bolster areas still reeling from the recession. Capitalized by 11 bank investors, a program-related investment by the MacArthur Foundation and a grant from the Attorney General's foreclosure settlement funds, the loan pool will finance responsible investors in rehabbing small groups of distressed 1-4 unit buildings in targeted areas in Cook, McHenry, Lake, DuPage, Will, or Kane counties. "By financing clusters of distressed 1-4 unit buildings, our new program will help improve these neighborhoods and provide more affordable rental housing," said Jack Markowski, CEO of Community Investment Corporation. "Through strong collaboration between the City, businesses, and nonprofits like CIC, this financing will help small and mid-sized investors make a strong investment in our communities, while most importantly providing affordable housing options for Chicagoans,” said the Mayor. Community Investment Corporation (CIC) is Chicago's leading multifamily lender. Since its founding in 1984, CIC has provided more than $1.1 billion to acquire, rehab and preserve almost 51,000 units of affordable housing for more than 125,000 metro Chicago residents. For more information, go to www.cicchicago.com. Pictured [from left]: Community Investment Corporation President Jack Markowski, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and PNC Bank Senior VP for Community Development Thurman "Tony" Smith meet after launching the new CIC loan pool to redevelop buildings with 1-4 units. PNC Bank is a major participant in the loan pool. Neighbors Magazine is proud to salute CIC on its great work for communities! CIC has been a long-time advertiser; for more information about this leading nonprofit, see their ad on page 14 this month.

Spring Clean-Up for Your Computer!
Many Windows computers become “bloated” by miscellaneous software. The other problem is that SPYWARE is on the rise and it’s a large culprit in slowing computers. “Spring Cleaning” for the computer is in order! Technically, this should be a routine and good habit to keep your computer running better. 1. A good antivirus program should be running and “up to date.” Several versions are recommended: 2. Anti Spyware Program installed (free versions for personal use are listed below) http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE http://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ 3. Safe Mode instructions (crucial for actually getting the best removal of junk, i.e. viruses and/or spyware: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm (NOTE: Print out for future reference) 4. Microsoft has a diagnostic tool that you can download, run and then post results at the site for further assistance: Scroll down to find the link for the download (January 7th 2013 post) http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/windows-7-runs-super-slow-after-automaticupdate/c6ee6331-757e-4b8d-aa5d-23671853ef18 5. cCleaner: Removes cookies, temporary files and various other unused data that clogs up your operating system: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ (Run at least weekly on your PC) 6. Do a Disk Cleanup Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk > Cleanup This utility is built into Microsoft Windows. It’s designed to free up disk space on computer users' hard drive, first searching and analyzing the hard drive for files that are no longer of any use. It then proceeds to remove the unnecessary files, freeing up disk space on the hard drive. There are a number of different file categories that Disk Cleanup targets when performing the initial disk analysis, including compression of old files, temporary internet files, temporary windows files, downloaded program files, Recycle Bin, removal of unused applications or optional Windows components, Setup Log files and offline files. 7. Check your disk for disk errors. Doing this will prevent many problems from occurring on your computer. Open Computer by clicking the Start button and then clicking Computer. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check and then click Properties. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. Administrator permission required if you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. ■ To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. ■ To perform a thorough hard disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. ■ To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Click Start. Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes to (most likely) a few hours. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.
