126 Years OF DEVOTION
tina valentino —Raymond Chandler
“
“ To say goodbye is to die a little.
Change. I’m not good with it at all. Even though change can often be a good thing— like taking off your training wheels, moving into a spacious new house or starting a better job— I’m still not a big fan. I like the little things (like my coffee and jeans) to be the same always. Not interested in new flavors, new styles, no hazelnut, no bootcut. So when it comes to the exceptionally significant things, I am even more adamant. When veritable landmarks like Kiddieland and Maywood Park Racetrack were bulldozed, for example, I am distraught. Through the centuries, no doubt many people have felt the same way—and, as Ray Chandler writes, to say goodbye to these traditions is to die a little. If you Google quotes about traditions, many pundits, past and present, frown upon it, citing that tradition is really just a bad habit or a “comfortable excuse to leave things be.” Even the old, bearded Chinese wise man Lao Tzu writes: Life is a serious of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. Clearly, Lao had no Italian chromosomes. Flowing naturally doesn’t come naturally for Italians and many Italian-Americans. We don’t eat just anyone’s meatballs or gravy. Every time one of the greatest and oldest religious traditions in our country, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is changed, tweaked, modified, updated or altered in any way, I die a little. When the fresh clams and the sausage stands faded away; when the mouse game was no longer part of the carnival; when the festival start was moved to Thursday instead of Tuesday; when the women who walked barefoot on scorching concrete and the men wore suits and ties became ancient history, a little piece of all of us died. This year, change has its way with us again, as there will be a gaping hole where the carnival once lit up three corners around the church, where excited children waited in line and happy screams and flushed faces were part of the celebration. The street outside of the church was one long welcome mat, where old friends would meet up—and eat standing up, leaning on the food stands or sitting on curbs, sharing a meatball sandwich or artichoke casserole or fried dough. At face value, there is nothing at all religious about a fly-by-night carnival or a dozen food vendors selling items that could be purchased anywhere—but what is religious is the familial atmosphere, the purity of laughter and kindness and wanting to be a part of something historic and memorable, even if you were only trying to win a goldfish. It was a total package. I get it. Vendors get tired of losing money to smaller crowds. Carnies get wary of too many bad weather days and no profits. People move away and never look back and the heavy burden of a 126-year unbroken tradition falls upon a handful of truly dedicated individuals. Many of us go into the Feast week with heavy hearts as it is and these changes will only make us more emotional. Attend anyway. Be part of the novena and pray. Invite your friends and co-workers to experience the procession. Keep the faith and inspire your children. Don’t give up on this tradition that was built on a promise.

The 126th Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The church and grounds of the Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be the site of the 126th anniversary of the Italian Feast. Today a monument marks the spot and devotees are invited to visit the location. For those who cannot attend, intentions and donations can be mailed or made online. BERTACCHI & SONS MONUMENTS AND FLORISTS: ROCKING IT FOR 90 YEARS
Did you ever wonder what might remain in Hillside 20,000 years from now if life ceased to exist? According to Armand Bertacchi and his son, Jeff, the answer would be none other than the granite cemetery monuments, because granite is the most durable rock known to man, according to Armand and Jeff, the 3rd and 4th generation family members now running Bertacchi & Sons Monument Company located at 333 S. Wolf Road in Hillside. This year, Bertacchi and Sons celebrates its 90th Anniversary at Wolf and Roosevelt Roads. Armando Bertacchi, the founder of Bertacchi & Sons, was born in Italy and migrated to South America where he worked as a laborer in the banana fields. Armando eventually moved to Chicago in search of a better life. Arriving in Chicago, Armando got work at Daprato Statuary, a firm renowned for supplying statues to churches. Armando worked long hours learning the monument business and earning enough money to bring his wife, Electra, to America. After years of honing his skills, Armando decided it Story and photos courtesy of the Hillside Herald was time to open his own monument business. First, he found a run down shack in Hillside along a two-lane dirt path called Wolf Road, then he recruited his two sons Bruno and Aldo (Armand’s dad) to help him do the heavy work and his daughter, Adelia, to be the brains behind the business. They opened their doors in 1929 just when the Great Depression hit. Still today, in front of Bertacchi’s, several similar flowerpots serve as a reminder of the Crash of ‘29: Those planters are there because the customer who originally ordered them went bankrupt. The planters are a humbling reminder of the early struggles of Bertacchi and Sons. Thankfully, hard times were replaced with the business boom that arrived after WWII; and in 1948 the family razed their original building and replaced it with the one that stands today. Currently, Bertacchi & Sons is owned and operated by Armand and his brother, Michael Bertacchi, and Armand’s son Jeff. The Internet has changed the way many businesses operate, but not at Bertacchi—they still use a typewriter and card files, just as their great-grandfather did in 1929. One surprising fact: Bertacchi & Sons deliver flowers to graves; last year alone they delivered over 1,000 arrangements to local gravesites. And when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, the Bertacchis found themselves selling Chicago Cubs flags and pennants so that people could place them on the graves of loved ones, who were deprived in life of a Chicago Cubs World Series. At one time, both Armand and his son, Jeff, had hoped to be teachers but the lure of running a successful business steeped in family tradition was too hard to pass up. Jeff’s young children, Anthony and Ella, are now helping during the summer...a possible 5th generation. What is the funniest inscription they’ve ever been asked to put on a grave marker? The Bertacchis will always unanimously reply: “Hail, Hail, The Gang’s All Here.” For more information on this local landmark, stop in, call 449-7010 or www.beracchiandsons.com.

MOST SCHOLARSHIPS EVER
Over $536,000 given to local students over 27 years
This was a huge year for us,” proclaimed North Riverside Mayor Hubert Hermanek, Jr. when asked about the 2019 Youth Program and Educational Scholarship Fund. “The unprecedented generosity of our corporate sponsors made it possible for us to provide $28,600 in educational scholarships this year—the most money ever awarded in a single year in the history of the program. We are thrilled to be able to help so many of our students with the rising cost of their educations.” Since the inception of the Youth Program and Educational Scholarship Fund 27 years ago, over $536,000 in scholarships have been awarded and over 1,031 resident students have been assisted. “There’s no doubt that all credit for this success story goes to the Fund founder, former Mayor Richard Scheck. Without his foresight and the partnerships he forged, more than a thousand students would have struggled to achieve their academic goals,” added Mayor Hermanek. The Mayor and Youth Scholarship Committee members, Ken Krochmal, Rich Scheck, Beth Wittbrodt and Gary Richied, Jr. are especially grateful to Riverside Golf Club, Carl Bollnow, Chad Drake and Chef John; key sponsors such as Joe Rizza Ford, Roy Strom, Komarek-Hyde-McQueen Foundation, Riccio Construction, West Town Bank & Trust, former Mayor Richard and Judy Scheck and North Riverside Park Mall. Sponsors and golfers were applauded for their part in making the event an annual success.

Adult Education programs guide students on paths to success
Pride and perseverance were on full display at Triton’s Adult Education Completion/Commencement Ceremony recently, as English as a Second Language (ESL) Program graduates and High School Equivalency Certificate completers were honored for their accomplishments. The honorees included Board of Trustee Scholarship recipients, National Adult Education Honors Society inductees, previous Westlake Health Foundation Scholarship recipients and new American citizens. In total, students enrolled in Triton’s Adult Ed Programs hailed from 13 countries and spoke nine different native languages. Fabioloa Navarro (pictured) first began learning English at Triton College in 2012 after coming to America from her native Mexico. She shared her inspiring story as the keynote speaker at the ceremony. The Adult Education class of 2019 was filled with students who, like Navarro, came to America in search of a better life or new opportunities. Adult Ed programs are available to students at no or minimal cost and students have access to a variety of support services. For more information on Triton College’s Adult Education programs, call (708) 456-0300, Ext. 3259, or 3513, or visit the Adult Education Department located in the A Building, Room A-203.
