He knows nothing; and he thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career. —George Bernard Shaw

tina valentino
Death and Taxes. April Fool’s Day and April 15—the deadline for submitting your income taxes—should be the same day. The government—federal, state and local alike— makes fools of us every day and, with election day looming, I hesitate now before I even turn on the television. I can’t decide which channel to avoid: the Chicago mayoral debates, the Chicago Blackhawks or Chicago’s Very Own news. When it comes to politics, we are chumps most of the time no matter who wins—your candidate or mine. When your campaign platform is to get the old guy out and you stay in longer than he did, you’re not a reformer. You’re a career politician. When you charter yourself a military plane to take your family and friends on a fact-finding vacation, you’re not a public servant you’re a self-servant without a shred of guilt or worry that someone might perceive your actions as an abuse of your power. From Congress to municipalities, the blatant “do as I please” mentality is commonplace now and it sickens me. As Robin Williams brilliantly phrased it: “Politics: “Poli” a Latin word meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "bloodsucking creatures".” The same goes for businesses right here in the neighborhood. Few even come close to pushing the envelope. In the course of a few days, I watched things go from bad to worse as a consumer. I attended the public hearing for Westlake Hospital at Bulger Park and signed up to speak my mind. Pipeline, the hospital’s new owners had stated that they would be there to listen to testimonies but never showed (see State Rep. Kathleen Willis’s comments on page 34 this month). Clearly, it’s okay for a big, for-profit conglomerate to deceive and strand a community without even having the backbone to face the music. I see no one at Pipeline majored in Business Ethics. On a smaller scale, I went to the Post Office to buy a roll of stamps, they didn’t have any. Not one roll. And I was informed that there were no stamps after waiting in a long line at the three-teller-window facility that only had one teller. So I moved on. Time to get some gas in my car. Pulled into the station only to find that someone had stolen my gas cap. Got out of the car only to find that every pump had a black plastic bag wrapped around the nozzles. Why even open up? Just to sell lottery tickets and cigarettes? Fair enough, things happen. Then, after seeing an advertisement on Facebook for a local establishment, I decided to treat myself to a beef sandwich because the picture looked so good (I’m a sucker for a good advertisement). Drove over to the place, totally focused on this juicy beef only to find out that they didn’t have any bread. What? You’ve got to be kidding me. No, not kidding. In the end, I don’t expect to get a refund either. I never do. And that’s fine. Whatever we spend it on gets taxed anyway. But you can’t put a tax on that feeling when an incredible friend makes apple slices for your mom; you can’t put a price on the people who told the Review Board that their lives were saved at Westlake Hospital; and you can’t always do just enough to get by or settle for less. Raise the bar, neighbors. Raise the bar.

SACRED HEART STUDENTS STEP UP FOR FOOD PANTRY Recently, during Catholic Schools Week, the students at Sacred Heart School in Melrose Park collected over 900 toiletry items for the Mission of Our Lady of Angels Food Pantry. Fifth graders were in charge of collecting the items, counting them up for each class and helping Sr. Jess from the Mission (pictured at left in the bottom photo with one of the teachers) load up the car. During her visit, the fifth grade class was able to ask Sr. Jess questions about her work helping the poor at the Mission. Sr. also visited the preschool class and read them a story. The Mission’s two food pantries—one every Tuesday provides food to over 150 families; the mobile pantry serves about 250 families each month. In addition to produce, non-perishable food items, bread and sometimes meat, the items collected by the students will also be distributed by volunteers at these events. For more information on how to support the work of the Sisters, visit the website at www.missionola.com.

AUTHOR RELEASES INSPIRING BOOK
Writer, licensed foster parent, mentor, family advocate and children's rights activist for more than 15 years, Carmen Pates Wilson of Oak Park released her new book titled “New Brother Trouble” in February on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. “New Brother Trouble” is a powerful, transformational, and inspiring read. It will help people get an understanding of the joys and fears of becoming a foster family. This amazing first book in the series will prove to be an inspiration to all who are finding it difficult adjusting to a foster family setup. They will realize that no matter how difficult it is
adjusting to this setup, they could make things work to the amazement of everyone. In “New Brother Trouble,” the author shares from her well of experience ways to resolve one of many foster parenting issues. She believes the “Fostering Love Series” is the solution sought by many struggling parents around the country. Applying the proven strategies shared in this book will reduce misconceptions associated with foster parenting but more importantly teach children how to adjust to the foster family setup. The lessons contained within “New Brother Trouble” are far-reaching and can have a significant impact on readers' lives. Readers will derive hope and learn a lot from the author's experience as a champion for children's rights for over 15 years. The book is the first in the Fostering Love Series. A beautifully-written children's book with a sweet and humorous insight into the joys and fears of becoming a foster family. The series teaches love, compassion, patience, and understanding. Carmen Pates Wilson has dedicated her life to giving abused and neglected children a loving and stable home. The book is available for $12.99 at GIWUpublishing.com.

@WESTLAKE COMMUNITY CRISIS UPDATE from State Rep. Kathleen Willis
Willis continues to fight to prevent Westlake Hospital from closing; HB 123 passes House State Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Northlake, is fighting to stop the closure of Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, holding public rallies to highlight the significance the community hospital has had over its 92-year history and to ensure that local voices are part of the discussion about the hospital’s future. “Westlake has been serving families for nearly a century and to suddenly close its doors for profit’s sake is just wrong,” Willis said. Administrators pledge to support Westlake but changed course to now close it. I am taking legislative action to prevent back-door deals like these from taking place in the future, making it harder for corporate interests to shut down a hospital.” Recently, Willis and members of the House AppropriationsHuman Services Committee held a hearing to listen to testimonies from the Mayor of Melrose Park, Westlake doctors, hospital staff, Triton College faculty, local clergy and other affected community members on the negative impact of the hospital’s closure. Westlake was acquired by Pipeline Health, which had pledged to keep the hospital open before the sale was finalized. Pipeline officials had agreed to testify at the hearing about their sudden change of plans but failed to attend. Prior to the hearing, Willis filed legislation to repeal a state law that allows Pipeline and other healthcare companies to close hospitals without warning. Her bill is House Bill 123, which passed out of committee in March and now heads to the full House for a vote. In March, impacted residents, elected officials and Westlake employees joined Willis at a public rally to keep the hospital from closing. The hospital holds 230 beds and employs nearly 700 people. Closing this facility would result in potentially long emergency response times and overflow at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, among other medical facilities. “I am grateful for the community support to keep Westlake open because it is unfair for Pipeline to close this hospital and then not defend their actions at a public hearing,” Willis said. “People deserve much better than this and we can no longer allow ordinary residents to suffer from bad decisions that impact their lives.” The hearing received considerable media coverage and the compelling testimony offered by physicians, nurses, area residents and even an 88-year old former employee captured by the press. Tina Valentino, editor/publisher of Neighbors Magazine, also spoke publicly at the hearing. Follow Rep. Willis on Facebook or call 562-6970.
