Throwing in the towel. It was a fluke that I happened to notice something stuck in my front tire—or maybe I noticed it because it was really big, like one of Herman Munster’s neck bolts protruding out of the rubber, wedged nicely between the treads. It was too late to find a place to fix it and then the next day I simply forgot about it—until I saw a story on the news about a man whose SUV rolled over on I-88 after he had a blowout. Thankfully, many people came to his rescue and the story had a happy ending. I never think of myself as that lucky so it was time to find a repair shop. My go-to fix-a-flat guy on Lake Street in Maywood retired so I took a chance on a place down the block— Cabriales Tire Shop, 512 Lake Street. I really wasn’t in the mood for any kind of costly repair or something else to worry about; in fact, it was one of those days when I was ready to throw in the towel. How much damage could that little unattended bolt cause—it seemed to be the least of my worries. Still I pulled in, jumped out and explained (exaggerating with my thumb and forefinger about two inches apart) that there was something huge in my tire. I expected to find a young twenty-something man doing this kind of hard work on hot days in a small shop but instead a fifty-something man who never said a word and expeditiously began to remove the tire. I hate when people watch me work so I strolled to the open door for some air while he examined the problem, figuring he would give me an assessment soon enough. Within minutes, still without saying a word, he had extracted the culprit, proficiently patched the hole and reassembled the wheel. When I asked about the cost I had to tell him how impressed I was and almost forced him into a conversation. That’s when I heard my Rosary mentor, the late Sr. Cyrille Gill whisper in my ear: nothing happens by chance. The tire shop owner’s name was Martin and, for more than 25 years, he made a good living working construction until a few DUI citations landed him in jail, ruining his career and everything else that jail can ruin. He served his time, learned his lesson and turned to his reluctant brother for help. For some strange reason, he wanted to own a tire shop. He was so passionate about it that his brother provided the start-up funds. Martin was intent on succeeding, amassing his knowledge and inventory daily, eventually reimbursing his brother and forging on by the grace of God. Those are his words, not mine. His life had taken a terribly wrong turn but it got him to the right place. And on that very day, the same thing had happened to me—I turned into his shop not knowing what to expect and, for just $20, I got my tire plugged and my eyes and heart opened by a total stranger. I was riveted by his story, but another car pulled in behind me so I thanked him and began to leave. But not before Sr. Cyrille whispered again. The driver of the car behind me was none other than an inspiring and compassionate friend Elliot Wimbush, Pastor of First Congregational Church of Maywood. It was all so surreal that I had to take a selfie! On days when any of us are ready to throw in the towel there are signs, there are Martins, there are Elliots. Stay the course. The next local road sign might just say “Blessings Ahead.”

Rube’s Garage, Harlo Grill, seniors and strangers hustle for Firehouse Subs’ H20 for Heroes, breaking previous record When Neighbors Magazine sounded the alarm on Facebook and invited area residents and businesses to take part in the 8th annual Firehouse Subs H20 for Heroes bottled water collection drive, there were a few takers at first. But when Barbara Rubright (pictured at right in the photo), owner of Rubes Garage Fitness saw the post, she knew immediately that she wanted to help, making it mandatory for her 5 am, 6 am, 4 pm, 5 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm and 8 pm classes to pick up a 24-pack of bottled water. The event culminates on Saturday, August 3 at all Firehouse Subs restaurants across the nation, but by July 30th Barb had already stockpiled 81 cases in her gym at 1934 N. 15th Avenue in Melrose Park. Twenty of those cases were delivered by James Stramaglia, owner of Harlo Grill, 24th and North in Melrose Park. “At Rubes, we know how essential water is for a healthy body. My Civic Center senior class, my friend Renee Fortuna and even former Garage members stepped up and bought cases and some simply donated the money that I used to purchase the water through Instacart. It’s so simple, affordable and important to take care of those who take care of us that everyone could be a part of this collection drive,” said Rubright. Sam Stanovich (pictured with Rubright), owner of Firehouse Subs Stone Park, 3124 W. North Avenue, has been successful over the past two years, collecting about 100 cases each year. That was before he met Barbara Rubright. “I am so tremendously grateful to Neighbors Magazine for connecting us with Barb and Rubes Garage. Barb and her member-family set a goal of 200 cases of water for our local heroes, which exceeds all expectations. And this year, all efforts will have double the impact thanks to a new partnership with DASANI® water, which will match all water collected. After the event, we will gratefully distribute the cases to the first responders all around us—in Schiller Park, River Grove, Franklin Park, Leyden Township, Melrose Park, Stone Park, Bellwood, Hillside, Maywood and Northlake,” explained Stanovich. When Mike Miletta, Schiller Park FF/PM, was told about this year’s extraordinary collection, he said, “Thank you, everyone involved! During the summer months, anytime we have to put our gear on for calls, dehydration can set in very quickly. Our fire gear can weigh up to 100 lbs. with our self-contained breathing apparatus on. This doesn’t include any tools or extra equipment needed for the call. Having Firehouse Subs make a donation like this will help ensure that we stay hydrated for any type of emergency this summer and throughout the year.” H20 for Heroes began in 2012 by Phoenix-area franchisees when wildfires and drastic heat depleted local supplies of their first responder organizations. In 2016, Firehouse Subs expanded the program into a nationwide effort. Anyone who donates a case also receives one free medium sub. To learn more, follow Firehouse Subs Stone Park on Facebook; call 708-397-5244; or visit www.firehousesubs.com. SCUDIERO’S BAKERY
A new State of Illinois tourist destination CORK WINE BAR
Last month, Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico and members of the Illinois Department of Tourism paid a visit to Scudiero’s Bakery and Deli, 2113 Lake Street in Melrose Park, to proclaim the good news: Scudiero’s had earned a coveted place on the “Illinois Made” list of artisans and craftspeople who are key to the past, present and future of Illinois. Meeting the strict criteria of makers who work in storefronts versus large-scale operations; who produce small batches over mass production; rely on local resources; and who bring history to life, Scudiero’s Bakery will soon be featured on the Illinois Department of Tourism website at www.enjoyillinois.com/illinois-made along with others who make a positive impact on the local economy. “Makers exemplify what it means to be a local artisan. They offer a one-ofa-kind experience,” according to the Department of Tourism. Baking the same bread recipe for over 150 years, the Melrose Park bakery was actually started by Umbaldo Datoli in Serino, Italy in the 1930s; he moved is family to America and opened the small Lake Street bakery in 1954. After this death in 1960, his daughter, Lena (above), and son-in-law Joe Scudiero (pictured on the large mural directly behind Lena) took over the business, which prospered with Joe at the helm. From ordinary customers to celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Scudiero bread has traveled all over the globe—as far away as China, Australia and Russia. Joe passed away in 2007, but his sons, Joe, Michael, Alex, Frank, Aldo and Tony all play key roles in the continued success of the tradition, adding catering, subs, pizzas, salads and specials to the menu and utilizing the internet and social media to reach a wider audience. For more about Scudiero’s, visit www.scudieros.com, follow Scudiero’s on Facebook or call 708-343-2976.
