Years of Unbroken Tradition in Melrose Park Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel July 10-13

tina valentino “For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.” —St. Therese of Lisieux

Pray for us.

Gone are the simple days when we would ride our bikes around the Church grounds and circle the carnival workers, electricians and street vendors hammering and sweating and getting ready for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Melrose Park. Rusty rides going up, propane tanks rolling in getting ready to char a ton of sausage, lights going up and streets being hosed down. Back then, we were all about the rides, what we were going to wear, who we could beg for a few extra bucks to win matted stuffed animals and if we could stay out just a little bit later than the year before—or, better yet, go to the Feast by ourselves. Then, before you know it, adulthood kicks in and you’re praying that you were still riding your bike instead of driving a car to church for a funeral or to repeatedly run into the chapel to light candles and plead for favors, hoping that no one notices that you were sobbing on your way out. Suddenly, it’s not just about the mouse game or lupini beans any more—it’s not even about “trying” times. These are disastrous times of overwhelming evil, terrorism, unrelenting greed, violence, indifference, cruelty to children and animals, suffering and selfishness and a planet that is buckling from negligence and abuse. No wonder Our Lady of Fatima appeared to little children and asked them to tell the world to pray for peace and the end to wars. Little children have no agenda. It may sound ridiculous but the day of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is my New Year’s eve, the day when, after all the work is done, I bring the best of me and the worst of me to the curb in front of my house and say under my breath: “Here I am, I’ve messed up a lot, maybe I’ve done some good but forgive me and let’s please start again,” as the statue of the Blessed Mother is carried down the street as it has been for more than a century. I am guilty of not praying as often as I should. I was embarrassed to admit that I only recently learned The Memorare. The Feast Day is contemplative and vocal prayer at its best—some devotees pray out loud all of the prayers we know by heart, some people pray through their quiet actions, some sing, while newcomers who have made the pilgrimage for the first time are aweinspired by the experience. Some non-believers just gawk and laugh. For those who Google, the query “What is prayer?’ tallies nearly 300,000,000 hits. For those who wonder what prayer is, simply ask those whose babies will be raised up, the sick and the elderly who will be recognized by the Feast Committee or any of the thousands of people who will converge upon Melrose Park, Illinois, of all the places in the world, bringing heartaches and happiness, their grief and thanksgiving, from their homes to the curb. The absence of prayer in our schools and lives certainly hasn’t improved the world very much. And so once again I invite those who are inclined to pray, even those who aren’t sure how to pray to come to Melrose Park for the novena, the festival, for the procession. Bring your family and friends, children and in-laws, trials and joys to the curbside and celebrate a tradition that was, after all, begun by one woman... and one prayer.

RE-PURPOSE YOUR

STUFF There’s no excuse for throwing good items in the trash when others can benefit from them. Proceeds from Savers and Aspire support worthy causes. Pictured, Savers’ Derek Perez with Tina Valentino.

amazing neighbors: Savers and Aspire It’s the season—pennants are draped across driveways and signs are posted on the corner of almost every block with arrows pointing in the direction of huge, giant, even multi-family yard sales, garage sales and estate sales that offer fun for “pickers” and great opportunities for people on fixed incomes. But when the weekend frenzy is over, garage sale “leftovers” in good condition can help generate much-needed revenue for good causes and an always-welcome tax deduction for you. Savers, a national thrift chain with more than 320 locations across North America, keeps more than 600 million pounds of unused goods from ending up in landfills while partnering with local non-profits since 1954. The Savers store and Community Donation Center at 10205 W. Grand Avenue in Franklin Park will celebrate one year of great deals and responsible recycling next month. Jen Bodoh, the store manager, says, “The support we’re able to provide the local community makes us proud and we’re always excited to welcome new

customers to the store and introduce them to the more than 100,000 unique items on the sales floor at any time.” Up to 10,000 gently-used items are stocked every day, ensuring customers continuously find a refreshed assortment of quality goods. The Franklin Park store partners with the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago and Savers pays the organization for every donated item, whether it makes it to the sales floor or not. When area residents donate, they are also turning their unused items into sustainable revenue for the Foundation’s mission to lead the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy, including support for Camp Blackhawk for children and teens with epilepsy. The store and drive-up Donation Center are open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 9 pm and Sunday, 10 am to 7 pm. Major appliances, auto batteries, computers, tires and household hazardous wastes are not accepted. For information, call 847-288-0034 or visit www.savers.com. Neighbors • 6

The store is open Monday-Saturday from 9:30 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 12 to 5 pm. Manager Shevawn Weber gladly accepts donations, which can be dropped off Monday-Friday from 10 am to 3 pm. World War II Veterans Unite

PILLARS OF HONOR COMING TO FRANKLIN PARK The Franklin Park American Legion Post 974 and Pillars of Honor, a non-profit organization, invite area residents to a Day of Honor and an unveiling of the original scale model of the National World War II Memorial on Sunday, October 19 at 1 pm at the Franklin Park American Legion Post 947 located at 9757 Pacific Avenue. Sergeant-at-Arms Joseph L. Houdek asks interested veterans and individuals to register their World War II veteran’s attendance at your earliest convenience to be included in the souvenir program book. Contact Pillars of Honor, Inc. at 770 Lee Street, Suite 103, Des Plaines, IL 60016 or call 847-954-0520 for more information. The exhibit and event is coordinated by Pillars of Honor, Inc., which is dedicated to honoring WWII veterans unable to travel to Washington, DC to see the Memorial in person. Pillars of Honor brings the Memorial to them and veterans and nonveterans alike can learn more at www.pillarsofhonor.org. The model is the original scale model that was used by Senator Bob Dole to present the Memorial design to Congress. It was designed by Friedrich St. Florian from Providence, Rhode Island. Pillars of Honor has this model on loan for a limited time before it must be returned and placed in the Smithsonian. So many veterans have missed out on the opportunity to get first-hand knowledge about their Memorial and, more importantly, receive recognition for their contribution to the nation. This Day of Honor experience gives veterans the chance to learn more, visit with other veterans and reflect upon the sacrifices they and others made during one of the most trying times in the history of the United States. HAVE YOU VISITED THE ITALIAN-AMERICAN VETERANS MUSEUM AND LIBRARY YET? The Italian American Veterans Museum and Library is housed on the third floor of the Office Center at Casa Italia, located two blocks east of Mannheim Road between North Avenue and Lake Street in Stone Park. The museum is open to the public from 1 to 4 pm on Sundays. The Museum and Library is a permanent, high-quality, aesthetic, scholarly and educational collection that also welcomes group tours and student trips by appointment. For complete directions and hours of operation, call 312-829-2460 and leave a fax number or e-mail address.

Fresh fruits and vegetables will be on the menu for many Hines veterans, employees and visitors every Thursday through September 11. The Hospital’s Farmers’ Market, open Thursdays between 7 am and 1 pm in the courtyard in front of Buildings 12 & 13. Shop the Market and support local farmers, many of whom are veterans and at the same time promote wise eating choices—the Market makes fresh fruits and vegetables an easy option for everyone! Each week the Farmers’ Market will feature different items, based on the availability of local produce and vendor response. The hospital will post the Farmers’ Market menus on the facility Facebook page as well as at main entrances to the facility every Thursday morning. Hines is always open to including new vendors and items in the Market. For more information, call Darcy Rea at 708-202-8387, ext. 23004 and follow Hines VA on Facebook. ELMWOOD PARK FARMERS MARKET The Elmwood Park Farmers Market is now open. TWO USA OLYMPIANS SHARE VIEWS ON PRACTICE, PERSEVERANCE AND PARENTAL SUPPORT AT WEST COOK YMCA APPEARANCE By Richard Barry

Wanting to keep up with her older brothers, she laced up her first pair of figure skates at age 3—but, after just one week, switched to hockey skates. He took to the ice in his early teens, first on figure skates, and then quickly switched to racers and was off on a speed skating career. They are Kendall Coyne, 22, and Emery Lehman, 18, members of Team USA who competed in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia and who shared their stories of perseverance, practice and the value of parental guidance with a West Cook YMCA audience in Oak Park last month. "Until I was 14, I played boys hockey, and only then did girls hockey pick up and become a real sport," explained Coyne, of Palos Heights, who brought home a silver Olympic medal as a member of the USA women's ice hockey team that lost a heartbreaking game to first-place Canada. Coyne said that her parents' mantra to "do your homework first, then you're free to play," motivated her. She said her years of practice paid off earlier this year when she was selected for the USA's 21-member women's ice hockey team. Lehman, of Oak Park, who swam at the West Cook YMCA as a youth,

competed in his first Olympics at the Sochi Games, placing 16th in the 5,000 meter and 10th in the 10,000 meter race. A recent Oak Park River Forest High School graduate, Lehman will begin to pursue a civil engineering degree this fall at Marquette University in Milwaukee. "I was the youngest member of Team USA and the youngest speed skater at the Olympics. I wouldn't have had this wonderful experience— two of the most exciting weeks of my life—were it not for my parents who urged me to consider speed skating and supported me all the way. Four days a week, my mom made the 200-mile round-trip drive from Oak Park to Wisconsin so I could maintain a rigorous training schedule on a dedicated track with other skaters focused on the Olympics," Lehman explained. Coyne and Lehman, are part of the United States Olympic Committee's Team for Tomorrow program that places them on platforms to speak to young audiences about the value of

staying active and living a healthy life. It was obvious that these young USA athletes brought home more than memories and mementos of their Russian winter experience. "It was a great thrill just to pull on my Team USA hockey jersey and see the legend on the inside that read

"Land of the free, home of the brave," said Coyne. "Our Y-kids spent an inspiring hour with these two fine USA athletes who clearly represent the Olympian values of excellence, friendship and respect, which closely parallel the YMCA's own commitment to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility," noted Philip Jiménez, West Cook YMCA President and CEO. Are You Phobic? Logizomechanophobic? Cyberphobic? Technophobic?

Logizomechanophobia is the fear of computers, laptops, etc. Cyberphobia is the fear of computers or working on a computer. Technophobia is the fear of technology. The origin of the word log is Greek, which means talk or word. The word machano from the Greek which means machine and the word phobia is Greek meaning fear. Logizomechanophobia is considered to be a specific phobia and is also related to Cyberphobia and Technophobia. It is a malicious piece of software containing a Remote Access Tool that allows outside hackers to access files on the hacked computer. Hackers are also able to peep into the person’s life via their computer’s web cam. The perpetrator can then take pics/videos, allowing them to access files on the owner’s computer and post them online! The perpetrator can also manipulate those photos, “watch” you via your own web cam and lock a computer so that it’s not accessible by the owner. Also known as “creepware,” perpetrators may blackmail the computer owners for money, etc. This is worldwide issue that is being addressed by authorities. To protect yourself: 1) Keep taped paper over your Web Cam when not in use! THINK before you decide to take pictures of yourself to save on your computer. 2) Change your password often and do not use anything that is identifiable with you as a password, i.e. birthdate, birthplace, nickname etc. Use strong passwords that contain numbers, capital letters, and lower case letters. 3) Clean your cookies from the computer regularly. 4) Keep antivirus software up-to-date and take the time to scan the computer. 5) Do NOT click on links enclosed in advertisements on websites. 6) Do NOT open emails from UNKNOWN senders. Village of Bellwood breaks ground on

89-unit “Senior Suites” development The Village of Bellwood and the Senior Lifestyle Corporation broke ground recently on the Senior Suites of Bellwood, an 89-unit affordable senior housing community at 3201 Randolph that will mark the largest capital development project in the village in the last 20 years. The modern facility, developed by the Senior Lifestyle Corporation in cooperation with the Illinois Housing Development Authority, will be home to eligible seniors who are at least 62 years old and meet certain income qualifications that will be negotiated between the Senior Lifestyle Corporation and its various public funding sources. Senior Suites of Bellwood is projected to open in Spring 2015, and will be managed by Senior Lifestyle Management Corporation. It will become a member of the company’s family of senior living communities that provide superior service and exceptional value. Senior Suites will feature: Spacious apartments including heat, electric and air conditioning; all utilities (except phone and cable television); weekly transportation to the grocery store; free laundry facilities on each floor; monthly housekeeping; planned social activities; daily electronic check-in service; emergency pull-cord system; spacious community rooms with TVs and DVD players on each floor; optional, flexible meal program; entry security system; on-site parking. “We couldn’t be more excited that our hard work and resourcefulness to provide a much-needed asset for our seniors, their families and the entire community is paying off,” said Bellwood Mayor Frank A. Pasquale. Bob Gawronski, vice president of Development and Acquisitions for Senior Lifestyle Corporation, added: “This is the perfect example of what can be accomplished when municipal, county and state agencies work in partnership with the private sector. We specifically need to thank IHDA for allocating the Low Income Housing Tax Credits and Illinois Affordable Housing Tax Credits that directly generated more than $14.7 million of private equity investment in this 89-unit senior housing community. Because of the tax credit programs, Senior Suites of Bellwood will remain affordable to area seniors for decades to come.” Availability of apartments will be based on the order in which pre-applications are received, the availability of the apartment at the desired rental rate and the applicant’s eligibility. Shortly before the building’s opening in 2015, at the time pre-application materials are made available, the actual rental rates for the initial year of occupancy will be published. For more information when it becomes available and to be placed on Senior Suites’ mailing list, call (312) 673-4333.
