Memories. After reading the headlines in just the last month alone, I thought to myself, “All that family has left are memories.” In Florida, people were crushed to death by a concrete overpass that should’ve never been opened; a mom, dad, son and daughter from Iowa were all found dead in their rented condo in Mexico because of a toxic gas leak; a car crash in Des Plaines annhilated an entire family, except for the 16-year old son who remains in critical condition; a mother in Gary, Indiana was found sitting in McDonald’s while firefighters pulled her two small dead children from a blaze; and an SUV plunged off of a cliff in California killing everyone. Lives are changed forever in an instant. Other memories are not nearly as tragic but still pull on our heartstrings. Every day I drive pass the house where my grandparents lived, where I washed my bike, watched Uncle Phil eat ripe tomatoes straight from the garden and sat on the porch with my grandfather looking at the moon on warm summer nights when I had a sleepover. Now, that corner looks like a miniature ghetto, doors and windows broken and filthy, shrubs overgrown and the house painted powder blue, of all colors. It sickens me. But when I close my eyes, I can see us at the table playing Yahtzee, my grandmother making the best cookies and my pup tent getting sucked out of the yard during a rainstorm. Which leads me to our feature story and cover quote this month. I don’t think I’ve ever dedicated a feature story to someone from so far out of our circulation area but there’s a first time for everything. They say if you want something done, ask a busy person. In this case, ask a teenager. Of the tens of thousands of local die-hard Kiddieland fans who could have championed the cause, helped preserve its memory through political channels or just a grassroots effort, no one did it. Including me. Maybe I was afraid I would strike out. My office looks like a shrine to Kiddieland because when I look at the photos and ticket stubs and t-shirts it takes me back to days when I didn’t have an anxious bone in my body, late fees on my credit cards, four-digit car repairs and calories from cotton candy, hot dogs and frozen custard meant nothing. Kiddieland was and still is a refuge from all that is worrisome. Memories of that parcel of paradise, even though it’s been paved over for nearly a decade, are still meaningful and thereapeutic. Even though Jeffrey Linnert, Jr. of Orland Park was only 10 when Kiddieland closed, he has done more to preserve the memory of Kiddieland in the last eight years than anyone with clout; through the Facebook page he launched with his grandmother, he has given nearly 3,000 “fans” a forum to relive and re-love the place that didn’t win a special place in our lives because of its death-defying rides but because it was small and safe, family-owned and true to the dream of its founder Arthur Fritz. Jeffrey Linnert, Jr. has a job and homework and college plans but it didn’t stop him from knocking on doors and asking, sometimes pleading, to give Kiddieland the recognition it deserves and a sign on North Avenue. Many thanks to State Rep. Camille Lilly for answering the door when he knocked. Together, they weren’t afraid to strike out. I may never have a Costco card in my wallet but I’ll always have Kiddieland in my heart.

Jeffrey Linnert, Jr. wasn’t taking no for an answer. Kiddieland deserved more recognition than it got. story by Tina Valentino Look at his face, sitting in the Kiddieland Polyp with his dad, Jeff Linnert in 2003. That’s the face of pure contentment. It’s the face of bliss: before the pressure of jobs and failed relationships sucked the joy of out us, before bills began to break our backs, before North Korea started pointing nuclear missiles in our direction. However, if you’ve ever spent a day at Kiddieland in Melrose Park, that is probably the face you made, whether you were three or 93 years old, because somehow every burden and care in your life was left on the other side of the turnstile. Unlike the more than 200,000 people who lived within two miles of the legendary amusement park, Jeffrey Linnert, Jr. lived in Orland Park so the 21-mile drive limited his family’s excursions. While kids from Melrose Park, River Grove, Elmwood Park and other nearby towns could frequent Kiddieland throughout the season, Jeffrey’s annual pilgrimage was usually just during the month of June, when it was “perfect Kiddieland weather,” according to his mom, Stacey. The corner made famous by Arthur Fritz back in 1929, when he offered pony rides to parents pummelled into poverty by the Great Depression, reigned as the ultimate suburban paradise for over 80 years until a family dispute resulted in the demolition of Kiddieland, paving the way for Costco and bulldozing nearly a century of cherished family memories. Jeffrey Linnert, Jr. was only 10 years old when Kiddieland was torn down but his passion for the park burned stronger with each passing year as he often thought,” Nobody has done anything. Something has to be done.” story continues on page 8

continued from page 6

Nudged by his grandmother Bobbi Morris, Jeffrey did at age 15 what no neighborhood Kiddieland veteran or elected official had the stamina to do: champion the cause. On September 22, 2015, he launched a Facebook page called “Kiddieland: Gone But Not Forgotten” and the team of two were its first and only members for a while. Like a seasoned marketing pro, Jeffrey pounded the pavement, contacting NBC, ABC, all news channels and anyone who would listen, banging the Kiddieland drum in a bold effort to keep the memories from fading away. Through utter persistence, the group’s membership soared from 1,000 then 2,000 members and now has over 3,000 Facebook fans—and even more good news on the horizon. “Kiddieland was something special between my family and I,” Linnert, Jr. explains. “I love the memories. I wanted to show my family how much I appreciated it and that it meant something truly special to me and, even more importantly, the owners of Kiddieland deserve validation too for giving us all so much happiness. My mom thinks I’m a little extreme but she is very understanding because she knows how deeply I care about this. I always thought that people would step up but there was nothing on Facebook, nothing dedicated to this iconic place. It was just meant to be that my grandmother and I got the ball rolling.” Over the last three years, Jeffrey has juggled homework and real life experience. He petitioned Costco to erect an honorary sign on the corner but the corporate giant immediately shot the idea down. “Could Costco stand in the way of the State of Illinois?” Jeffrey wondered. He scoured the internet to find an elected official whose district included the corner of 1st and North Avenue—which took him to the door of State Rep. Camille Lilly. Lilly’s Ambassador of Education Latrice Whitfield took the lead on the project because she, too, had fond memories of Kiddieland, traveling with her daughter and niece from the

city for fun times in Melrose Park. “I told Jeffrey straight out that we’re going to do this together and get this done,” Whitfield said emphatically. “While very important issues are facing the State of Illinois, Kiddieland offered too many exceptional memories and reasons for us to ignore this plea,” added Whitfield, who invested countless hours of her own time to prepare the documentation necessary for State Rep. Lilly to introduce legislation to the General Assembly. Linnert, Jr., his grandmother, Whitfield and others now anxiously await the passage of House Bill HJR0116 which will officially designate First Avenue “as it travels from its intersection with North Avenue with its intersection to River Road as the “Kiddieland Amusement Park Road.” Whitfield said of Rep. Lilly, “If it can be done, she’ll get it done.” Whitfield then said of Linnert, “This is what the world needs—young people like Jeffrey Linnert, Jr. giving everything to a cause, to something you care very deeply about.” Cindy Maiello-Glueklich, Director of the Melrose Park Public Library, shares Whitfield’s sentiments. “Jeffrey first contacted us back in 2015 about taking a picture in front of the Kiddieland sign (above with his grandmother) that is now mounted on the side of the Library building. He is one amazing teenager. I am thrilled that together we will be working on new projects related to the preservation of Kiddieland memories. In the end, so many of us could have done what Jeffrey did but we didn’t.” The Carl Sandburg High School senior works part-time and is planning for college but continues to focus as much time and energy on Kiddieland as possible. “It’s hard to describe that feeling you had going through the gates, the feeling of waving at strangers from the train and having them wave back at you. I’m very grateful to everyone who took me seriously and got on board,” said Linnert, Jr. “It was hard to say goodbye to Kiddieland. Now I know that countless others feel exactly the same way I do.”

Cast Your Vote in the Triton Annual Baking Competition Books and batter will make for a sweet combination as the Triton College Library and Hospitality Industry Administration Department present the fifth annual CakeLit Baking Competition April 9-13. The entire community— along with Triton students, faculty and staff—are invited to stop in the Library throughout the week to vote for a favorite cake designed by Triton students and inspired by a children’s book or literary character. The cake with the most votes will win the People’s Choice award. Voting is available during regular Library business hours April 9-13. On Saturday, April 14, join the CakeLit Bake-Off as contestants decorate 24 cupcakes to accompany their cake. The bake-off starts at 2:30 pm in the HIA Kitchen (2nd floor, B Building). Experience the cutting-edge facilities and equipment available to students enrolled in Triton’s culinary programs. Awards will be handed out at 5 pm. During the baking competition, there will be children’s activities and a story time. Children of all ages are welcome! For more info, email Lauren Kosrow at laurenkosrow@triton.edu or Chef Christopher Clem at christopherclem@triton.edu.

Hey, kids...Don’t miss the STEAM EXPO!

Students from throughout the area and their families will once again experience the many ways that the STEAM fields - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics—factor into their everyday lives as Triton College presents the second annual STEAM EXPO. The event is Saturday, April 21, 10 am to 2 pm, in the Collins Gymnasium (R Building) on the east side of campus, located at 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove. This FREE interactive event is open to the community and will feature dozens of hands-on activities and demonstrations that will capture students' imaginations and inspire them to pursue their goals. The inaugural STEAM Expo in 2017 was a huge success, and this year’s event features even more to see and do. New exhibits at this year’s STEAM EXPO include the Chicago Area Robotics Group’s ‘Robot Search and Rescue’ activity, in which operators will guide a robot through a ‘burning’ building in search of people in need of rescue. Additionally, sand molds will come to life before your eyes in the ‘Augmented Reality Sandbox.’ Watch in amazement as creations are augmented in real-time with an elevation color map, topographic contour lines and simulated water. Attendees can also try their hand at navigating rockets into space thanks to the Cernan Earth and Space Center’s flight simulation display – which challenges aspiring astronauts to build rockets, launch missions, stay on budget and avoid disaster. The STEAM Expo will also serve as a celebration of Earth Day, featuring a display designed to educate the public about the benefits of energy saving ‘smart grid’ technology, monarch butterfly conservation display and activity as well as other tips for living a greener lifestyle. Our new east campus greenhouse will be open for tours during the event. Come see the high-tech facility featuring an aquaponic system that will allow fish and plants to grow in one integrated ecosystem. STEAM Expo activities are age-appropriate for middle school students, though children and adults of all ages are invited to attend. For information on the event, call (708) 437-6915, Ext. 3695.
