Growingup,myauntworkedforSears.Kidstodaywouldthinkitwaslaughable whenyoucanjustgotoAmazonandmakeawishlistofanything.ButtheSears“WishBook”(which, ironically,isavailableonlineasacollectible)markedthestartofeveryholidayseason,especiallyfor kids.Almostathousandpagesthick,morethan200pagesineveryissueweredevotedtotoys.Ican rememberhowheavyitwas,likeanencyclopedia(that’slaughablenow,too),havingtolickafingerto carefullyturnthecornerofthereallythinglossypages.Icanvividlyrememberflippingthroughitwith her,pickingonetoyoneverypagejustforfun,goingeversoslowly,tryingnottorushtherush—like youwouldeatanicecreamcone.Thosewerethedays.Ofcourse,ImadealistbutIdidn’texpect much.ItwasjustthethrillofknowingtheworldwasfulloftoysandthatChristmaswascoming.
NowthatI’mfullofgrayhair,Idon’tmakealistandImaynotevenputup aChristmastree. Spendingdayafterdayatthenursinghometendstotakethethrilloutofputtingupdecorations, listeningtoChristmasmusicandsendingoutcards.AsIwaitedfortheelevatoroneday,ayoung20somethinggirlandIweretalkingabouttheweather.TheforecastpredictedrainandIsaidIreally wantedchilliertemperaturesanddefinitelysnow.Ilovesnow—butnotice.I’mtoooldtofall.She lookedatmeandsaidwithutmostsincerity,“Well,Ihavetotellyou,youlookreallygoodforyour age.”What?Shedidn’tevenknowmyage—shemusthaveassumedIwasaresidenttryingtoescape thefacility.Iwantedtoreplywithmyusualsarcasm,“HowdidyouknowIwas80?”AsifIwasn’t discouragedenoughalready.
Walkingdownthelonghallonmywaytotheelevatoreverynight,Ithinktoomuch.Thereare collectionboxesandgivingtreeseverywherefortoys,forcoats,mittens,shoes,travel-sizetoiletries,for non-perishablefood,evenforfood,toysandsuppliesfordogsandcats.Wherearetheboxesfor seniors?Wherearethewishlistsfortheold,sick,forgottenpeopleIseewithmyowneyeseverysingle day?Where’sthecheerforsomeoneconfinedtoadorm-sizeroom24/7withnochanceofstickingtheir tongueoutonasnowydayeveragain?ThankstoCovid,nursinghomesstillfacetougherrestrictions thantherestoftheworldbecausewearesupposedlyprotectingourbelovedelderly(alsolaughable)so visitsfromsingingschoolchildrenandholidaypartiesaremoreofathreattotheirsafetythanareason forwakingup.TheSeniorAngelisright:discouragementisworsethanbeingsick.Iwitnessitandlive itonadailybasis.There’snolongeranyhopeofsmellingChristmascookies,ofwanderingthemall tryingtofindjusttherightgift,ofgettingalldressedupforpartiesorchurch,ofschedulingvacation timefromworktogetthingsdone,gettingmanicuresandhairappointments,ofseeingtheheirloom angelatthetopofthetree.
IreadthisonInstagramandsavedit.Whileit’snotupbeat,sometimesChristmasisn’t.“Someone youknowispreparingfortheirfirstChristmaswithouttheirhusband,wife,mother,father,brother, sister,daughterorson.Othersarepreparingfortheirlast.Regardlessofthespecifics,rememberthatthis seasonofjoyisoftentimesaseasonofsorrowformany.Bekind,begenerous,givelove,givehelp,if nothingelse,justdon’tgivepeopleahardtime.”SomedaysoonIwillfindawaytobringalittlejoyto theselonelypeopleandIhopeyou’lljoinme.Untilthen,remembertherealmeaningoftheseasonisn’t aboutwishlists.AsDr.Seusswrote,“MaybeChristmas,hethought,doesn’tcomefromastore.Maybe Christmas...perhaps...meansalittlebitmore.”
