Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Alway a s. —attributed to Brad Meltzer

Thanks, Bob. I almost always heard his wife f call him Robert but I knew him as Bob. A fe f w called him Mister out of respect or maybe even because of his huge, intimidating, more than six-fo f ot, tobacco-chewing, concealed carrying presence. He was a no-nonsense guy, didn’t want any fa f vors, easy jobs or a fa f ncy life f . Just some fl f annel shirts, a fe f w mesh baseball caps, a truck to jump stalled semis in sub-zero temperatures, a Harley fo f r long summer rides and a fr f ont porch where he kept a watchfu f l eye on all the neighbors. Like me. He fo f und the best gas prices in the suburbs, had his best breakfa f sts at Harlo Grill and, when his wife f ’s dementia turned his unpretentious life f into a living hell, Bob became one of the best caregivers I’ve ever known. A gentle giant, he was hell-bent on keeping her with him at home and by his side in the truck. He did everything he never imagined he would have to do— f om bathing and dressing to washing clothes and setting up alarms that would never give him another fr peacefu f l night’s sleep. He did it all...but he made one mistake. He made it look easy. W both knew it wasn’t easy—on many levels—and we became confi We f dantes through our shared experiences and struggles. Caring fo f r someone you love, with little or no help, is exhausting; the daily routine will take its toll. There’s no margin fo f r error. There’s no oversleeping, picking up a good book, there’s no watching the fo f otball game, there are no long hot showers. Caring consumes you; ensuring that the person you love is clean, fe f d, safe f and as comfo f rtable as they can be is your life f . And, if the work r wasn’t taxing enough, the heartache will deplete any strength you have left f. As his wife f ’s condition worsened and the pandemic locked me out of my mom’s nursing home, we checked on each other fr f equently. But most of the time, despite his tremendous burden, Bob checked on me—when my car wasn’t home or my tires were low, when the weather was bad, when I walked laps at the park r , when he invited me to join them fo f r something to eat. Sometimes we talked politics just to discuss something more screwed up than the lives we never anticipated. We W agreed on almost everything and a fe f w things in particular: 1) no one has the slightest idea what you’re going through until they’ve been through it themselves and 2) some people are just nowhere to be fo f und when the chips are down. Hopelessness is a dangerous thing. I’m going to miss Bob more than words can say. If you were expecting a Va V lentine’s Day love column, this is it. I am in awe of the love Bob had fo f r his wife f . It wasn’t an arm candy, house in Kildeer, Range Rover in the driveway kind of love. It was the “in good times and bad times I swear to God” love. In a world of 90-Day Fiances, this is the real deal. But life f can be cruel, even merciless. If you saw Bob on the street, you might never imagine the battle he was fi f ghting. His crooked smile was deceiving. The same is true fo f r so many of us. Just because we’re not living in a makeshift f tent under Lower Wa W cker or our sobbing at work r doesn’t mean we’re not suff ffering. “Kindness begins with the understanding that we all struggle,” wrote Charles Glassman. It’s happened many times in the past and this month yet again: our fe f ature story on Franklin Park r resident April Natale is also a local and powerfu f l and fa f scinating story of desperation and love. The kindness of strangers helped April prevail over extraordinary obstacles—now she is using her gift f s to help others fi f nd peace. I hope Bob’s story inspires you to be kind even when you’re overwhelmed; I hope April’s story inspires you to live your best life f ; I hope the kindness you share with others, expecting nothing in return, all comes right back to you. Stay warm, be safe f .

APRIL NA NATALE Wife. Mother. Nurse. Author. Medium.

You’re Not Alone

Some say a the hardest battles create the toughest soldiers. If that’s the case, April Natale is unstoppable, emerging victorious frfom battles with abuse, debilitating anxiety,y fe f ar and desperation. Her newly l -published book has been in the top spot in its Amazon category fo f r the past three months, helping and healing people around the world. a story by Tina Valentino

Holidays, like Valentine’s Day, y can be especially painful for anyone with a broken heart. Grief and loss, compounded by unanswered questions, lack of closure and an overwhelming desire to connect with people you have loved and desperately miss makes facing each day almost insurmountable for some, even those with great faith. Franklin Park resident April Natale knew that feeling all too well, particularly when her stepfather passed away in 2018. But his death would finally prompt her to face the life-altering premonitions she had been suppressing and battling with since she was a young child. “I knew that it was time to finally accept and realize my gifts; I was an empath and a psychic medium,” Natale professed. From a very early age, Natale knew that she was different and “extra sensitive.” As a Catholic, she was comfortable with and unafraid of angels, but seeing “spirit,” messages and signs as a child became increasingly traumatic. “The feelings were very strong and they scared me,” reflects Natale, who struggled with intense anxieties and phobias as a result.

“When I was in the sixth grade, my friend and I were with her dad and I had a sick feeling in my stomach when we said goodbye to him that I wasn’t going to see him again. He died that night in a car accident. This happened to me more than once. I was always getting signs and having premonition dreams,” says Natale. The West Leyden High School graduate pursued a nursing degree at Triton College. But being a medium, well, that was an entirely different path. “I made up my own mind that I wanted to go to nursing school; being a medium was something I had no choice about. It’s very difficult and painful to hide something you’re born with—it’s like coming out of the closet—but the caring people and teachers along the way have helped me grow into two vocations: first as a nurse, then as a psychic medium.” Among those who played the most significant role in April’s liberation from fear and anxiety was internationally-known author,r healer and spiritual teacher Pat Longo, who also mentored Long Island Medium Theresa Caputo, catapulted to fame through the TLC channel reality television show. story continues on page 8

“My first appointment with Pat was life-changing and I was so relieved to hear her say that I wasn’t crazy, y I really was connecting with spirit, that it was a God-given intuition that could help and heal others—and heal myself,f too,” said Natale. “She completely understood my abilities.” After decades of inner conflict and stressing over skeptics, she was finally able to not only freely embrace her gifts but she was compelled to tell her story. Natale’s first book, “Inside Your Heaven: Inspiring Stories of the Afterlife,” has been in the #1 spot in Amazon’s “Medium” category for the past three months, receiving numerous five-star reviews, according to EIN Presswire. Just recently translated, a Spanish version is now also available to readers around the world. “I just knew this is what I had to do,” declared Natale. “Everyone who helped me along the way, y those who pushed from the other side made this book possible. I’m not an avid reader or a writer,r I just did it. The book affirms so many things. It affirms that our loved ones are really always with us. It proves that people do have gifts that are given to them and that we should be open to our gifts, intuitions, abilities and dreams. And it encourages people to connect with those who have passed on. No matter what religious beliefs someone might have, our loved ones step forward all the time, they’re right next to us with reminders of our past, strength for the present and hope for the future. If you suffer the deep grief of losing loved ones or suspect connecting with spirits is possible or remain fascinated by premonitions, dreams or signs, you’ll be inspired by the book. My ultimate goal is to help you feel less fearful about death and more able to heal so you can live a more loving and peaceful life.” story continues on page 10

Natale adds that being a nurse in the midst of a pandemic has only heightened her awareness of loss. “More than ever,r people are searching for spirituality and connections with loved ones and, during individual sessions on Zoom, she uses her gifts to reveal more incredible stories like the ones in the book— those who overcame the painful loss of their mothers; those who received guidance and comfort; those whose self-worth was affirmed; women who found closure and peace from the spirits of their deceased children. Te T stimonials from readers and clients around the country continue to validate her work. One reader exclaimed, “I started reading it at 5 pm and finished at 1 am—I laughed, I cried, it’s powerful.” Natale’s West Leyden World Lit teacher,r John Strauss, now an Adjunct Professor for Honors and Liberal Arts Seminars at Dominican University in River Forest, attests to Natale’s perseverance and sincere desire to help others. “April enlivens others as she nurtures confidence, healing, and peace. Early in life she endured serious betrayals and hardships, including abuse. She has been a hard-working, dedicated nurse, and now continues to embrace her gifts as an uplifting medium. She is that down-to-earth, feisty, y young and cool mom who boldly convinces others they are accepted, have gifts themselves, and are loved. She remains compassionate and self-sacrificing, quick to share her earthy wisdom. In life and in her book, her voice is like a lively, y fun hug that helps us be faithful to our soulconnections and our own intuitive strengths.” Natale doesn’t claim to know what the future holds, even for herself,f but she plans to continue to promote the book, reach out to local libraries, consider the possibilities of podcasts and remain faithful to her mission to bring “a little bit more spirituality” to the world. “I’m just a normal person, a mom with kids and responsibilities and life lessons like everyone else. I hope that, through my book, people will be inspired; I hope that through my gifts, I can help people understand that we’re really just spiritual beings in a human experience, that we’re all meant to be healers in some way.”

Dave’s Hot Chicken—a Los Angeles, California sandwich shop that drew massive late-night lines when it debuted as a pop-up in 2017—opened its third Chicago-area location in Melrose Park last month at 2615 W. North Avenue to consistently long lines of curious customers as word spread like wildfire on social media. Dave’s began when four childhood friends came up with a simple concept: take Nashville Hot Chicken and make it better than anyone else in America. With only a couple thousand dollars to their name, they boot-strapped a pop-up concept in a parking lot in East Hollywood serving a simple menu of tenders, sliders, fries, and kale slaw—they created a viral cult following. Consistently using best quality chicken, preparing the chicken in a proprietary brine and, after deep frying, topping the most tender chicken in the world with one of seven signature spice blends has made Dave’s an American and Canadian favorite. The chain offers fried tenders in seven levels of heat from no-heat to “reaper” which includes a waiver for customers to sign, warning them of its extremely high Scoville rating. With three main combo options, six sides, drinks and milk shakes, customers who aren’t already flocking to the new Melrose Park location to dine-in or pick up are taking advantage of Door Dash, Uber Eats, Postmates and Grub Hub. Hours in Melrose Park are Sunday through Thursday, y 10:30 am to 10 pm; Friday and Saturday, y 10:30 am to 11 pm. Call 708/540-2700 or visit www.daveshotchicken.com to order or for more information. Mayor Ron Serpico, who will take part in an official grand opening to be announced, appreciates that Dave’s has provided many jobs for local residents and partnered with local Pan American Bank & Trust on the project.
