New. I can’t really speak with any authority on the subject of new years and new things because I’ve actually become better acquainted and more well-versed with the “old.” There’s no longer anything new about me, that I can think of, except for maybe a very expensive tooth that I make payments on every month. My old bones crack, I’m no longer really blonde, my 2004 truck has started to rust, my closet is definitely outdated and I’m about two upgrades behind schedule, still toting around a scratched up iPhone 6. The flip of the calendar will have little impact on these things.

After the last few months, taking the big plunge into resolution-making just isn’t going to happen, even though I seriously need to lose some weight and save money—but don’t we all.

At this point in time, I’m more of the “baby steps” thinker, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step mentality because the idea of adventures—I’ve purposely chosen adventures for the cover this month—come in all shapes and sizes. Crazy as it sounds, I’m not ruling out the possibility of a ziplining or rock-climbing day but backpacking through Europe or quitting my job to write a novel is not on the agenda. Heeding the words Shakespeare wrote for Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet seem more suited for my life these days: “Wisely and slow.

They stumble that run fast.”

We spend so many days of our lives running fast. And stumbling, while worrying about being good enough at school, at work, at home. Running fast to meet deadlines, to catch the train, to beat the clock, to ace the class, to have a baby, to buy a house, to care for those we love—only to end up so very weary and sometimes even physically sick. Sometimes running seems inevitable. There are only so many hours in the day. Born in Egypt in 1917 and died in Scotland in 2006, Eileen Caddy, a spiritual teacher and author, wrote something that strangely fits my new year state of mind: “When you feel that you’ve reached the end and that you cannot go one step further, when life seems to be drained of all purpose; what a wonderful opportunity to start all over again, to turn over a new page.”

I’ve already given it a feeble try, cleaning out some of my mother’s kitchen cabinets, hauling containers without matching lids and age-old bottles of oregano and almond extract and food coloring to the trash and recycling, purging our home of useless items and expired cake mixes while reminiscing and getting pretty choked up over the reality that the smell of my mother’s gravy, neckbones and biscotti are a thing of the past now as she is unlikely to be stirring the pot anytime soon. It was my lame, practical attempt at concentrating on the present and on simplicity. While stressing over everything at the hospital last month, a woman who was a deacon’s wife, someone I may never see again reminded me of the parable of the mustard seed as I paced up and down the hall. What? The mustard seed? Are you kidding me? No, she was not. Any faith, any effort, even as small as this tiny, almost microscopic seed, is better than none at all. In the end, neighbors, perhaps we should put aside eccentric, ridiculous resolutions and think small, think mustard seed, think on the pure things that will truly pay off in our lives.

WESTLAKE COLLECTS COATS; FIREHOUSE TOY DRIVE A SUCCESS

Once again this year, employees at Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park came together for their annual tradition of donating winter coats, hats, mittens and scarves to local elementary schools in District 89 to help children in need. More than 100 items in various sizes and colors were collected to care for less fortunate families in the community the hospital serves, according to Marta Alvarado, PhD. Community Outreach Director for Westlake Hospital. The drive begins in early October, giving employees ample time to contribute to the bags of winter apparel that was delivered to District 89 offices (top left photo).

At left, Firehouse Subs Stone Park owners Sam and Carmia Stanovich joined with the United States Marine Corps to make their location at 3124 W. North Avenue an official Toys for Dots drop-off site. For the 3rd successful year, Firehouse customers and area residents generously donated new toys to the cause which has been delivering hope since 1947. Approximately 548 million toys have been distributed and 251 million children have experienced the excitement of Christmas to date.

SYMPHONY STEPS UP; RIVER GROVE COLLECTED

Founded in 1931, the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest is one of the nation’s oldest community orchestras. Not only is the Symphony committed to musicmaking and providing an opportunity for cultural enrichment, its members and audiences are also committed to the issues facing the community outside of the auditorium. In recent months, the Symphony spearheaded campaigns to feed the hungry and support local veterans. At left, OPRF Food Pantry Volunteer Coordinator Monnette Bariel with some of the hundreds of pounds of food and hundreds of dollars in cash that were collected for the Food Pantry at a fall concert. Members of the orchestra and audience also donated coats and cash for Hines VA hospital at the November 11th concert, which marked the 100th anniversary of WWI Armistice. In the Village of River Grove, Mayor David Guerin, Food Pantry administrator Billie O’Connor along with residents Darlene Bauman and Janice Campbell did double duty keep the pantry shelves stocked during the holiday season while, at the same time, organizing the annual toy drive for River Grove families. The River Grove Food Pantry is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 am and every second Saturday each month from 10 am until noon. Located at 2607 N. Thatcher Avenue, the Pantry is stocked by donations from local groups and residents. Anyone interested in making a donation can call 453-1818, extension 327.

FAMILY BRINGS CHEER TO PATIENTS, STAFF

Yvonne Jones is the nursing supervisor at West Suburban Medical Center located at 3 Erie Court in Oak Park and she raised her kids to “pay it forward and to give back.” And they did just that when they gave up Christmas eve fun to donate their time and talents to bring the holiday spirit to those who need it most. The Jones children, ages 11-19, call themselves the SM6 Band and play instruments ranging from the ukulele, violin, drums to keyboard and bass. They performed professionally for several years and were voted the “Best Family Rock Band in Illinois” by TMT magazine.

George, Isabel, Adam, Emily, Eliana and Jack joined their mother at West Suburban Medical Center to perform holiday music for patients, employees and guests. They are also donating 50% of all proceeds from downloads of their music from their newly-released CD to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Visit sm6band.com for details.

OF HOPE FOUNDATION DONATES HUNDREDS OF PAJAMAS

At its annual Breakfast with Santa held this year at Division Street Tap, 1419 N. 15th Avenue in Melrose Park, the MAP of Hope Foundation, a local charitable organization, collected hundreds of pairs of new pajamas for children of all ages, from infants to teens, and shared them with the House of the Good Shepherd and Ronald McDonald House Charities. House of the Good Shepherd creates a violence-free pathway to self-sufficiency for survivors of family abuse and is entirely funded by donations private sources such as foundations, organizations and individuals. Ronald McDonald House near Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood serves families with children being treated at the Medical Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Rush University Children’s Hospital, UIC Children’s Hospital and other local clinics. Each House makes every effort to provide care and comfort to families and is sustained through monetary donations, volunteers who cook and bake, contribute to House operations and an ongoing “wish list.”

Stand Down to Help Homeless Veterans Donations and Volunteers Needed On January 13, 2019, American Legion Post #974 in Franklin Park will host its 3rd Stand Down event for homeless veterans and others in need. The day includes a hot meal and each guest receives a bag of toiletries, fruit and a chance to “shop” at tables full of clothing, blankets, shoes, coats, hats, etc. Local agencies such as the VA and Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs are also on hand. The Post is currently collecting donations.

Many of your neighbors are members, like Franklin Park resident Julie Reggi, who is celebrating her 45th year working at Westlake in January 2019.

How long have you been a member of Westlake Fitness Center? Three years, since September 2015.

Why did you join the Fitness Center? After back surgery, I needed consistent exercise. I went to outpatient physical therapy here at Westlake but, after seeing the benefits of warm water pool therapy, joining the Center was a no brainer!

Have you experienced any benefits from joining the Fitness Center? It has been working great! I’m able to get out of bed without pain. I work full-time. I’m staying active. And I’m able to take care of my new granddaughter.

What offerings do you enjoy most at the Fitness Center?

Walking and jogging in the pool, stretching, doing jumping jacks, makes it easy to move and talk at the same time. I enjoy taking part in the morning aqua exercise class when time permits. It’s a very friendly environment where people can exercise and socialize at the same time.

Why do you continue to come to the Fitness Center?

Being a Westlake employee makes it very convenient, however, it is an exceptional facility that has everything anyone could need. Everyone is friendly. Fellow members are genuinely concerned and encouraging. I would recommend Westlake’s Fitness Center to both employees and community members alike because there is something for everyone—different types of equipment, a walking track, a clean, warm and inviting pool—and the hours are convenient, making it easy to exercise before or after work. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and the amenities are great—I don’t even have to worry about bringing a hair dryer or curling iron because it’s all right here and available to members.

What would you tell people about the Fitness Center? For me, as a caregiver, my focus is always on others. When you come to the Fitness Center, you can focus on yourself, which gives you the energy and stamina you need to continue to focus on others. I tell people all the time that I am very grateful to have such a complete and modern, affordable and convenient fitness facility in our neighborhood.

Registering for college classes has never been easier, thanks to Triton College’s Super Saturday enrollment event. From counselors on-hand to ensure students enroll in the classes that best fit their goals and schedule to financial aid specialists who will help craft a plan to pay for school, Super Saturday will provide current and prospective students with everything they need to get ready for the spring semester. The one-stop registration event is Saturday, Jan. 12 from 10 am to 3 pm in the Learning Resource Center (A Building) located on the west side of the Triton Campus at 2000 Fifth Avenue in River Grove.

The Triton College baseball team shared some holiday joy by taking time to visit patients at Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago. 34 players and coaching staff brought presents for the children.
