Practice gratitude as a way to calmly accept your life as it is right now. Engage in the daily habit of listing all the things you are grateful for instead of focusing on what you want and don’t have. (Anonymous)

This too shall pass. I’m not a big fan of this expression, mainly because it falls into the category of “what else can you say” when everything is going wrong. The next few paragraphs might be more of a pep talk to myself rather than a good general interest column, so I apologize in advance. But for the first time in nearly 20 years, it’s been a little bit of a “when it rains it pours” scenario here, commencing with the crash of the hard drive that stored every past and present megabyte and morsel of Neighbors magazine, among other efforts, just as we were full steam ahead on the July issue. When the smiling little Mac start-up icon decided not to show up for work, everything came to a sudden, screeching and debilitating halt. Clearly it wasn’t life-threatening but being totally unprepared to have my livelihood threatened has a harsh way of sucking the strength and positivity out of one’s physical and mental health. I’ve learned since showing up at the computer repair shop, all red-eyed and sniveling like a child with a broken toy, that wringing your hands, staying up all night and crying over the things that you can’t change doesn’t help at all, even though we all do it anyway. I contacted every printer we’ve ever worked with, every friend with a speck of software savvy and Googled through the night in desperation. Facing the prospect of breaking the bad news to both readers and advertisers that this issue was not destined to be, I reached out to a friend who has often told me, “My prayers are powerful,” as a last resort. Though I might be lapsed, I have always refrained from praying for lost keys, car repairs, casino jackpots and even a computer crisis. But this one time I need to make an exception. She, of course, began to pray; a few others who knew how anxious I was—over the future of my job and other stressors—also offered prayers. Were those prayers answered? Yes and no. As you read this issue, the computer is still in the shop and it’s fate is unknown. But I was focused (obsessed actually) on what I wanted and didn’t have... until a little red cardinal sat down near me at the nursing home while I waited to see my mom through the glass. Almost immediately, I felt the urgency to forge on with gratitude—for her, for our advertisers who have suffered greatly through this pandemic, for the readers who inspire me through their thoughts and deeds. Was generating an entire issue from scratch on an unfamiliar computer using totally foreign software exhausting? Yes. But a little cardinal reminded me to remind you to make a list of the little things—like sunshine and fresh air, a hot shower, a scoop of Lezza Italian ice, a Cafe 23 coquito, a walk at the park, a smile from my mother enduring a long isolation, a card in the mail, a drizzle of River Forest Chocolates’ caramel sauce over ice cream, friends willing to pray and help, a slice of Gioacchino’s pizza, a ginger shot from Rube’s Garage juice bar to boost my immune system, a new face mask, a kind clerk, a working sump pump during a summer storm. Ironically, these parting words are from the Japanese Zen Master Doko, who, in the 1600’s, collected donations for a tremendous undertaking—the tedious production of the first complete woodcut edition of Buddhist text (about 60,000 pieces): “Slow down your speech. Slow down your breathing. Slow down your walking. Slow down your eating. And let this slower, steadier pace perfume your mind. Just slow down.”

Living a Dream: Mario Brown

A Smokin’ Success

MARIO’S

BACKYARD EATS Like everyone else, the COVID-19 pandemic put

the brakes on Mario Brown’s food truck. For months, his usual locations weren’t available, people were off of work and sheltered-in-place but now that the state is opening up again, this Maywood native is fired up and ready to roll. For Mario Brown, owning a food truck was always a dream but the Proviso East High School graduate pursued a degree in Business Administration from Monmouth College and enjoyed a rewarding career in social services until becoming a father meant he needed to make more money. So he took a chance and started a janitorial company in 2004 and it became so successful he no longer had to put his passion on the back burner. “I thought now is the time to do something I love to do,” he explained, launching the Mario’s Backyard Eats truck. The truck, an old dilapidated newspaper delivery vehicle was an empty shell when Mario purchased it for $8,000. Dreams don’t come cheap—decking out the truck with a mobile smoker, stove, refrigeration and an electrical generator among other necessities for cooking on the road was a hefty investment but the smile on Mario’s face when he talks about his top sellers is proof that doing what you love has its own rewards. The limited me nu was inspired by memories of family backyard barbeques combined with the succulent flavors he experienced at some of Chicago’s best restaurants, according to Mario. Customers and catering clients can choose from a

slab of ribs, rib tips, Jerk chicken, fried wings, turkey burgers, hamburgers, hot dogs, sides (fries, baked beans and cabbage) and drinks. But the menu item that gets Mario and most truck patrons fired up is his specialty: pulled turkey. “I have to admit it’s r eally excellent, the best pulled turkey ever.” All meats are sold individually as well. Mario’s Backyard Eats truck has a permanent location in the Aetna Plywood lot at 1401 St. Charles Road in Maywood from 11am-2pm Wednesdays and Thursdays; the truck has various locations on Fridays; but on Saturdays, he returns to Maywood from 11am-4pm at 13th and Harrison; Sundays, various locations. More than 1,100 people follow Mario’s Backyard Eats on Facebook and many are proud to p ost their praise for the food, for this local success story and their photos. “I never grew up thinking any of this,” reflects Mario. “But I am really blessed and grateful for everything that’s happened.” Hot-off-the-grill party trays are available. For more details and the complete catering product menu, visit www.mariosbackyardeats.com or call 224-258-5607. You can also send an email to mariosbackyardeats@gmail.com.

A NEIGHBORS SERIES: 2020 CENSUS. BE COUNTED.

Tonita LeShore, Director of Human Resources for the Village of Bellwood, is also the Bellwood Census Chair. At the Village’s Black History event, which partnered with Proviso Township and the NAACP (west side branch), local leaders educated and brought awareness to residents regarding the Census. or Tonita LeShore, it’s personal. She has dedicated her career to human resources—literally—providing, implementing and collaborating to ensure that people have what they need. As the Director of Human Resources for the Village of Bellwood and the Bellwood Census Chair, the 2020 Census has become a priority because an accurate count would bring much-needed and deserved funds to the village. “This is most important for Bellwood, not just for federal resources to susta in and support healthcare, transportation, infrastructure and social service programs but it also decides fair representation in Congress, “LeShore explained. Since the launch of the Census campaign in early 2020, she has worked tirelessly to stress the importance of the relatively quick and simple survey. “An undercount anywhere dramatically decreases the amount which averages about $1500 per resident in any community. When you calculate that

amount over a 10-yea r period, the amount can exceed over $100 million. One event at a time, one resident at a time, we’re trying to drive home the message that what only takes maybe ten minutes to do, once every ten years, puts tens of millions of dollars at stake.” Tonita, together with support from Mayor Andre Harvey and Village Clerk

LeShore, second from right, was one of the guests on the Brunch Bunch 1390AM iHeart radio show hosted by Tamera Fair, educating listeners on the Census. story by tina valentino

Janel Moreland, had created an eventbased plan that would bring Bellwood residents together for educational yet fun gatherings such as Moreland’s annual Pink Divas & Gents breast cancer research fundraiser. But the COVID-19 pandemic wiped all event plans off the calendar and forced a major shift in her plans to reach residents with the important Census message. “The original date to complete the count was July 31 but that has now been extended to the end of October, giving us more time. All events went virtual and we have been utilizing social media, every birthday and graduation ride-by, every peace march to spread the word.” Story continues on page 10

continued from page 8 “We have tried to be as creative as we can under the unprecedented circumstances, “LeShore added. “We are absolutely capitalizing on every opportunity—from the Village of Bellwood Mask Give-Away event, the District 88 Chromebook Give-Away with Superintendent Mark Holder, at our Black History event, at School District 88’s Resource Expo with Drake Booker, Partner Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau and the Brunch Bunch rad io show Most recently, LeShore spearheaded the June 27th St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church event, which was part of her Census 2020 Completion Celebration and Assistance to Complete Community Tour, which provided fresh produce, masks and gloves to all who attended. “At that event, we were joined by Congressman Danny Davis, Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, State Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County C ommissioner Brandon Johnson who worked with us to assist those who attended with the many questions residents have such as lost forms, inability to get online, how safe is it to complete the Census, etc.” LeShore can communicate safely with residents through the Village’s newsletter and also through messages printed on Bellwood water bills. But as the Census work turns into the home stretch, training will begin for enumerators who will walk the community, trying to reach o ut to those who still, for whatever reason, have not yet completed the form. “One of the issues we face often is that people are afraid to complete the Census form. It is imperative that people everywhere know that information provided on the Census form can never be used by Congress to access personal information, result in deportation or violate their privacy in any way. This form has one purpose and that is just to count the people in the household for the allocation of federal funds and to determine representation in Congress.”

Does it really matter? LeShore, Moreland and nearly every Census volunteer in Proviso Township and across the country face the same question repeatedly. “It has got to matter to you if you’re a parent, because it impacts our schools. It has got to matter to you, if you’re a veteran, because it impacts social services. It has got to matter to you if you’re a senior citizen because it impacts healthcare and programs that improv e the quality of life,” LeShore emphasizes. LeShore has witnessed firsthand the struggles that come with a low count. Having been a volunteer at food pantries and homeless shelters, she often wondered how they could have benefitted from the federal funding they were denied because people simply dismissed the form as a waste of time or an invasion of privacy. “I would bring my daughter and we would spend our own money to bring groceries and make breakfast and serve yogurt and j uice to the less fortunate among us. Homeless and transient folks can also be counted. Everyone matters. Village Clerk Moreland wholeheartedly agrees. “It’s my duty not to let the people of my community down. I know I speak for both of us when I say that we do what we do because it’s best for our community. We take on these additional roles because we are public servants, not politicians. We truly want to make a difference and every effort we make for an accurate count in this Census could have a dramatic and positive impact on all of our lives. There are three easy ways to respond: by phone, by mail or online. If anyone needs assistance, I hope they will feel free to call on us.” Anyone wanting more information, can visit the Village website at https://www.vil.bellwood.il.us/ or the Proviso Township website at https://www.provisocensus2020.com/, where you can find a link to complete the form.

FUTURE

READY FOR THE

“When the school was forced to close due to COVID-19, we continued with meaningful instruction the very next day and are still going strong,” said Walther Christian Academy Principal Tim Bouman. HERE’S WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING: “I think e-learning is great! Kids are being challenged to find information on their own and really internalize it.” “I like that my child’s teacher calls and responds to her questions.” “I think this was a great alternative under the circumstances. My child is still learning and so I appreciate this option.”

Still looking for a great school for the 2020-21 school year? In these uncertain times, Walther Christian Academy continues to be a top choice for academic excellence and spiritual growth in a Christ-centered, diverse learning community. Whatever the next school year brings, we’re ready to continue our tradition of excellence and care. Call us to learn more about what a difference a Walther education can make.

This year, Triton College selected Leslie Wester as outstanding full-time faculty member of the year and Patrick Kane as the outstanding adjunct faculty member of the year. Each year the Triton College Professional Development Committee (PDC) accepts nominations for Outstanding Faculty of the Year. One full-time faculty member and one adjunct member were selected for the 2019-2020 awards. The winners’ names are then sent to the Illinois Community College Trustees Association for the opportunity to be recognized at the state level. Nominees are required to have demonstrated excellence in teaching, which includes explaining to the PDC how their teaching methods address activity-based learning, collaboration between instructor and student, and diversity of assessments used in the classroom. The committee also judges the nominee’s development of innovative programs, community involvement and leadership.

Triton is committed to providing educational programs to provide skills to enter in-demand career paths. After five courses, students will be prepared to join a plant production team. The College is home to a modern greenhouse renovated in 2016. The greenhouse, along with the adjoining botanical garden, is used as a resource for students in the Horticulture, Sustainable Agriculture and Hospitality Industry Administration Programs. For more details on the Greenhouse Grow Operations certificate program and the courses required, visit the Triton College website at www.triton.edu and experience unlimited growth potential.
