Sausage and clams. It’s barely a moment in my mind aftfer all these years, a flfeeting thought of huge rigged-up charcoal grills, along smoky 23rd Av A enue in Melrose Park r . I can see it all when I close my eyes, I see hundreds of Italian sausages lined up and charred to perfe f ction in one glimpse, thousands of raw clams shucked in another glimpse. I was too young to appreciate the taste of either and now it’s gone. But they are pivotal moments in my memory—and in local history, tiny spark r s of an incredible fl f ame, seemingly insignifi f cant moments of an incomparable story—the story of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Melrose Park r . Throughout my career, I have taken so many photos, written so many stories on Feast history and interviewed many of the selfl f ess people who devoted their time and talents to nudge the tradition over the century mark r . One might think that there’s nothing left f to say. So much of what I have lived and experienced over the decades are mere moments so powerfu f l that they defy f explanation, so intensely personal—sometimes painfu f l, sometimes hopefu f l, many times gratefu f l—that writing about it is almost an invasion of privacy, like interrupting a prayer. Only a handfu f l of women over the last 129 years (the Altar & Rosary Society) have been allowed in the sacristy to prepare the original Statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel fo f r the week’s fe f stivities. My devoted mom considered herself extremely honored and blessed to be part of this group. When the late Corinne Principe asked my mother to use a special cloth to wipe the fa f ces of the Madonna and the baby, it was a moment that will stay with me f rever. Slowly, gently, devoutly...I could only imagine what my mom was thinking and fe fo f eling, tears in her eyes, shallowly breathing, in awe of the task she had been given. In the silence and privacy of the sacristy, some of the fi f ercest, desperate intentions are tucked away. A lock of a baby’s hair sealed in plastic; handwritten notes are pinned to the undergarments of the Madonna with all the hope a heart can muster; donated jewelry, gold chains, wedding rings, shout “thank you” to the heavens; baskets of red roses, each with its own special intention during the annual rose presentation, adorn the altar and the Statue. Just a moment in time, a fe f w words, maybe only a f mily name that is announced during the ceremony, yet speaking volumes about hope and charity. fa For every devotee, there are these unspoken moments and together they are woven into the fa f mily story, the Shrine’s story, the story of one woman’s promise and great fa f ith that became a place of pilgrimage. Like mine, not all Feast moments are “religious.” Moments screaming with excitement, hoping the little mouse would run into the hole that would win me a stuff ffed animal; moments rushing home all red-fa f ced begging fo f r a fe f w extra dollars and a little extra time; moments trying to decide what to wear to the carnival, meeting up with fr f iends, winning goldfi f sh and plastic prizes; moments when you hear the band coming down your street on Thursday night; or when the earth-shaking tribute bombs set off f car alarms, kids covered their ears while others could fe f el the powerfu f l tremor in their chest; sucking a salty lupini bean, sticky fr f om dripping Italian ice cups. For so many befo f re me, moments were spent on stranger’s lawns aft f er traveling to Melrose Park r fr f om the city. There is no fe f ature story on the Feast in this issue but fo f r those of us who have lived it all of our lives and even fo f r those experiencing the tradition fo f r the fi f rst time, the moments are the story. Ta T ke a moment to donate, if you can, to participate, to perpetuate, to pray that these moments continue. Buona Festa...

WESTCHESTER LIBRARY

edicates garden to Perry and Poppe

The Westchester Public Library, y 10700 Canterbury Street, dedicated its new “Prairie Rising” garden on June 16 to Frank Perry, y the late Westchester Village President who passed away last year,r and Fred W. Poppe, the Library’s former Treasurer.r What was once just 2,500 square feet of turf grass is now a pollinating paradise, thanks to Fidencio Marbella, the Library’s executive director,r who was able to secure considerable funding and support for the project. Canadian National Railway provided a $25,000 CN EcoConnexions From the Ground Up grant and America in Bloom, a national nonprofit, joined the effort. The Library met the organization’s top criteria, including “beautify f ing community gateways and creating significant landscapes demonstrating the contribution of flowers and plants to growing community pride and economic vitality.” The garden of native plants now attracts a variety of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife by providing diverse habitats and food sources. Representatives from both CN and American in Bloom were on hand for the ribbon cutting. Friends of the Library, y Joe Pokorny and the Westchester Chamber of Commerce were also partners in the project. On hand at the ceremony were Peggy and Ava Perry, y the late Mayor’s wife and daughter,r who are “forever grateful” to the Library for co-dedicating the peaceful and beautiful sanctuary to Frank. “The Library held a special place in Frank’s heart as he sat as a member on the Library Board before becoming a Village Trustee then Village President. Frank was an avid supporter of the Library. I know he was smiling down on us all at the ribbon cutting. Standing next to the permanent plaque at the entrance (pictured above), we were so proud and happy to know that Frank will always be remembered here.”

FOR PROSPECTIVE Students & Fa F miles

Triton College will be hosting several informative Admissions events in July and August for prospective students and their families. The free events will be held in the Student Center Cafeteria (located in the B Building) and an RSVP is not required. “We wanted to make these events inclusive for the entire family with several dates to accommodate everyone’s schedules,” said Dan Lamoureux, assistant director of Admissions. The Admissions events will consist of a presentation, an explanation of the enrollment process and programs offered, and a “crash course on community college” with the Admissions team and advisors available to answer questions. “We also talk about scholarships, financial aid, work study, y on-campus clubs and then we give students a campus tour,r” explained Lamoureux. “There is also time for a question-and-answer portion.” To complement these events, there will be one Parents’ Night Info Session in July for families to learn more about tuition costs, payment options and to explain degree and certificate programs. “Our attendance for these events just seems to grow, w ” noted Lamoureux. “The community is responding very well and we’re always excited to have people on campus.” The Admissions events will be Wednesday, y July 20, 1-2 pm; Wednesday, y July 20, 6-7 pm; and Friday, y August 5, 1-2 pm. Each event will be held in the Student Center Cafeteria (located in the B Building). SCHOLARS PROGRAM STUDENTS 5 Locals Honore r d at Triton Board Meeting Triton College Scholars Program students Maddy Norton, Victoria Zubchenko, Monsterat Chavez, Adam Kania and Donovan Grbic were recognized for their academic achievements at a recent Board of Trustees meeting. “This group has encountered a lot of adversity. During their senior year of high school and first year of college, they were going to school on a laptop due to COVID,” Scholars director Dr.r Michael Flaherty said. “They are very driven and have kept themselves on the road to success.” For example, Maddy Norton of Berkeley attended Proviso Math and Science Academy. For the fall, she is attending Georgetown University and plans on majoring in political science. Norton wants to go into politics, but first wants to work for a nonprofit organization. “I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the help of Triton College and the Scholars Program,” she said. “The Program has changed my life.” Victoria Zubchenko of River Grove attended East Leyden High School and is going to Elmhurst University next year to study cybersecurity. Zubchenko is a recipient of the Triton Scholars Program-Elmhurst University Full-Ride Scholarship worth over $80,000. Northlake resident Monsterant Chavez, who attended West Leyden High School, said she will be staying an additional year at Triton. She is studying business management and wants to open her own small business one day. Adam Kania of Rosemont attended Christian Liberty Academy and said he plans on attending Georgetown University or George Washington University next year.r “I want to pursue a career in politics,” he said. “The Program opened a lot of doors for me.” Northlake resident Donovan Grbic went to West Leyden High School. Grbic hopes to attend University of Wisconsin Parkside in Ke K nosha with plans of studying history. “Triton was an economical option for me at first, but I feel like the classes here really enriched me,” Grbic said. “I enjoyed the Scholars Program.” The Triton Scholars Program is a two-year program for academically talented students who plan on transferring to a competitive four-year college or university after Triton. Triton’s Paralegal Certificate Program will be 31 credit hours (two semesters) with students taking classes in Civil Litigation, Contract Law, w Legal Ethics and Law Office Organization. The program will be limited to 15 students each semester.r Students must already have an associate degree or higher to enter the cohort, since no general education courses will be offered.
